- 0:25Welcome back listeners to Sandman Stories Presents, a
- 0:28folklore podcast where I read you to sleep and or until the
- 0:30next story. I'm your host Dustin.
- 0:34And if you want more Sandman that is too spicy for the main
- 0:37feed, go ahead and check me out on Sandman Stories After Dark on
- 0:41Patreon. Today we are back in the book of
- 0:45Georgian folk tales written down by Marjorie Wardrip.
- 0:49OK and in the first story we have a shepherd that is trying
- 0:53to help out but also kidnaps their kid.
- 0:57And in the second story we have a 8 or 9 year old on a couch
- 1:02that has to be given riddles that he can answer.
- 1:05Luckily the king has an apple. OK let's begin.
- 1:11The shepherd and the child of fortune there was, and there was
- 1:16not at all, and there was a man who had a wife.
- 1:20They were wealthy but had no children.
- 1:23One day the woman said to her husband, Come on, let's place
- 1:27young bulls in our churches, and at night let someone look and
- 1:30see. Perhaps God will look down upon
- 1:32us and give us a child. The husband approved of this
- 1:35idea and placed five bulls in five churches.
- 1:40Then they went to one of the churches, killed the bull and
- 1:43gave it to their shepherd, and said, Go and take this bull meat
- 1:46and give it to the poor. Please remain in the church all
- 1:49night and watch and listen carefully.
- 1:53The shepherd went away and gave the meat to the poor.
- 1:56Then he went into the church and remained on guard the whole
- 1:58night, but he did not hear a word about his master's
- 2:01childlessness. Day dawned and the shepherd went
- 2:05and told his master, I've watched the whole night and I've
- 2:08not heard a sound. Then this man went into the
- 2:11second Chapel. He killed the bull there and
- 2:14gave it to his shepherd, who distributed it even as he had
- 2:16done the first. In the morning, when he went
- 2:20home, he brought the same answer as before.
- 2:24Then they went to the third and 4th chapels, but still they
- 2:26learned nothing. Only the 5th Chapel remained.
- 2:31Here the shepherd distributed meat to the poor and hid himself
- 2:34in the church. In the middle of the night, 5
- 2:38angels of the church flew down and began to talk together.
- 2:41They said, we must do something for this couple, They are
- 2:46childless, let's give them a son.
- 2:50Yes, said the first Angel. But when he reaches the age of
- 2:5320, let him die and return to us.
- 2:57No, said the second Angel. When the priest shall lead him
- 3:00into the cathedral and place a crown on his head, then he shall
- 3:04die. When he has a wife and children,
- 3:07then he shall die, said the third.
- 3:10He shall live a long time, he shall grow old, but shall be
- 3:13worthless. Fellow, said the 4th.
- 3:17If we were to give the man a child, let us give him something
- 3:19better, said the 5th Angel. We have spoken, now it is your
- 3:24turn, what do you say, Answered the others.
- 3:28Then said the 5th Angel, Let him be endowed with immortal youth,
- 3:32and whatever he asks of God, may it pass.
- 3:35Good, good, agreed the others, and then went back to their own
- 3:38places. The shepherd heard everything.
- 3:43At Daybreak he came back to his Master, who asked him, Well, did
- 3:47you hear anything last night? The shepherd replied.
- 3:51The five angels of the churches assembled, and they said that
- 3:54you should have a son at the end of the year.
- 3:57But it is ordained that your shepherd will be present at the
- 4:00birth. Thank the Lord, if we have a
- 4:03son, you may be present, answered the husband and wife.
- 4:06After this the shepherd went to his sheep, and the man and woman
- 4:09went to bed. A year passed.
- 4:14The shepherd waited for some time, put a little goat in his
- 4:16pocket and went away. The woman was in bed, and the
- 4:20shepherd put the baby in his pocket and wrapped the young
- 4:22goat up in his bed clothes. Then the shepherd opened the
- 4:25door and left. When he had gone up for a few
- 4:28weeks, the child would not stay in his pocket any longer and
- 4:31asked to be put down. The shepherd put him down, and
- 4:35he walked by himself. They went on and on, and at last
- 4:39they became hungry. The shepherd said to himself,
- 4:43Come, I want to try and see if the prophecy of the angels is
- 4:46true or not. And he said to the boy, wish
- 4:49that God gives us bread so that we can eat.
- 4:52The boy wished and God gave them bread.
- 4:55They sat down and ate, but they had no water.
- 4:58He wished for water, and by their side their murmured a
- 5:01beautiful spring. The shepherd now believed in his
- 5:05heart that all his desires would be fulfilled, and said, Wish for
- 5:09my house to be completely furnished, and that outside
- 5:12there is a village for me to rule, and that I may have such
- 5:14and such a Princess for my wife. The boy wished this, and
- 5:19everything was according to his desire.
- 5:23Some time passed. Once the Princess asked the
- 5:26shepherd saying, How has it happened that an illustrious
- 5:29Princess like me has married a simple shepherd?
- 5:32Her husband replied, Heat a pin and put it in the boy's foot to
- 5:36see if he's asleep. If he is, then I will tell you
- 5:39everything. The child heard this
- 5:42conversation and wished in his heart, Oh God, may my foot be so
- 5:46hardened that I cannot feel anything.
- 5:50The woman heeded the pin and put it to the sole of the boy's
- 5:52foot, but he did not move. The shepherd thought that he was
- 5:56really asleep and told his wife everything in detail.
- 6:00The child lay quiet and listened.
- 6:03He now learned for the first time whose son he was, and how
- 6:05he had fallen into the hands of the shepherd.
- 6:09The next morning at Daybreak, he arose and went to seek his
- 6:12parents. He went on and on and
- 6:15everywhere. He asked about his village.
- 6:18He came to his father's house and said, Do you want a guest?
- 6:22Truly, child, a guest is of God. And they led him in.
- 6:27Then the boy asked them, Have you lost anything?
- 6:30The master of the house replied, Well child, I have lost a
- 6:34shepherd and I still owe him four years wages.
- 6:37I saw him just now coming to you with great wealth and with a
- 6:40wife and family, said the boy at night when they were all asleep.
- 6:45The boy wishing his heart, Oh God, may the shepherd with his
- 6:49house, his family and his town be in our courtyard tonight.
- 6:54The next morning, the master of the house came to the door and
- 6:57was struck with surprise. My God, he said, how was this
- 7:01town built in our courtyard? His wife said.
- 7:05What are you talking about, husband, This is not our
- 7:07courtyard. Indeed, we are somewhere else.
- 7:11The man replied, No, wife, this is our own home.
- 7:14That is our house, but these are certainly not the usual
- 7:17surroundings. Well, let me look inside.
- 7:22If there is a boy sleeping there, it must be our house.
- 7:25The boy was awake, but he pretended to be asleep.
- 7:29The woman and man went in and saw the boy sleeping there.
- 7:33They woke him up and said, Who are you who has appeared here?
- 7:37We pray you to tell us what you have done so that we no longer
- 7:40know our own house. The boy smiled and said, I told
- 7:45you yesterday that your shepherd was coming to you with his
- 7:47possessions. Behold, he came yesterday and
- 7:51has taken up his abode in your courtyard.
- 7:53Let us call your shepherd here. At that moment the shepherd
- 7:58awoke. When he jumped out of bed and
- 8:00saw the courtyard, he said to himself, Great are you, O Lord,
- 8:04I was settled in my home, and now I am here.
- 8:08He went to see his master, bent his knee and said this.
- 8:11And that is what I've done. I've done evil, and now I'm in
- 8:15your hands. Do with me as you will.
- 8:19When the man and woman heard this tale, they did not know
- 8:21what to do to show their joy. First one embraced the child,
- 8:26then the other. At length the boy said, I am in
- 8:29truth your son, but this man is also your child.
- 8:33He has done wrong, but you will forgive all and give him his
- 8:37back pay. His father gave the shepherd his
- 8:40money and forgave him, but still the boy was not satisfied.
- 8:46He said to his parents, This shepherd at least left a goat in
- 8:49exchange for me. If my mother brought up the
- 8:52goat, he brought me up. If you wish, keep the goat and I
- 8:56will go with him. If, however, you keep me, you
- 8:59ought to give him back his goat. Not only will I do that, but
- 9:04I'll also give him half my flock, said the boy's father.
- 9:08He divided his flock into two parts and gave one to his
- 9:11shepherd and took him into his house.
- 9:14The boy remained with his father and mother, and they lived
- 9:16happily together. The end.
- 9:36OK, and the second story, the king and the apple, there was
- 9:40and there was not at all of God's best.
- 9:42May it be there was a king. When the day of his death was
- 9:46drawing near, he called his son to him and said, on the day when
- 9:50you go to hunt in the east, take this coffer, but only open it
- 9:54when you're in dire distress. The king died and was buried in
- 9:58the manner that he had wished. The Prince fell into a state of
- 10:02grief, and would not go outside. At last the ministers of state
- 10:07came to the new king, and proposed that he should go out
- 10:09hunting. The king was delighted with the
- 10:11idea, and set out for the chase with his entourage.
- 10:16They went eastward, and killed a great quantity of game.
- 10:20On their way home the young monarch saw a tower near the
- 10:23road, and which to know what was in it, he asked one of his
- 10:27viziers to go and try and find out about it.
- 10:30He obeyed, but first said, I hope to return in three days,
- 10:34and if I do not, I shall be dead. 3 days passed and the
- 10:38vizier did not return. The king sent a second, a third,
- 10:43a fourth, but not one of them came back.
- 10:46Then he rose and went himself. When he arrived he saw written
- 10:50over the door, Enter and you will repent.
- 10:54Enter not and you will repent. I must do one or the other, said
- 10:59the King to himself. So I shall go in.
- 11:03He opened the door and went in. Behold, there stood 12 men with
- 11:08drawn swords. They took his hand and let him
- 11:12into 12 rooms. When he came to the 12th, he saw
- 11:15a golden couch on which was a boy of eight or nine years of
- 11:19age. His eyes were closed and he did
- 11:22not utter a word. The king was told.
- 11:26You may ask him three questions, but if he does not understand
- 11:30and answer all of them, you must lose your head.
- 11:34The king became very sad, but at last remembered the coffer his
- 11:38father had given him. What greater misfortune can I
- 11:41have than to lose my head? He said to himself.
- 11:45He took out the coffer and opened it.
- 11:47From it there fell an apple which rolled towards the couch.
- 11:51What help can this be to me? Said the King.
- 11:54But the Ample began to speak and told the following tale to the
- 11:57boy. A certain man was travelling
- 12:00with his wife and brother. When night fell and they had no
- 12:03food, the woman's brother-in-law went to a neighboring village to
- 12:08buy bread. On the way he met brigands who
- 12:11robbed him and cut off his head. When his brothers did not
- 12:14return, the man went to look for him and he met the same fate.
- 12:18The next day the unhappy woman went to seek them, and there she
- 12:22saw her husband and brother-in-law lying in one
- 12:24place with their heads cut off. Around was a pool of blood.
- 12:29The woman sat down, tore her hair, and began to weep
- 12:32bitterly. In that moment a little mouse
- 12:35jumped out. It began to lick the blood, but
- 12:38the woman took a stone and threw it at the mouse and killed it.
- 12:42Then the mouse's mother came out and said Look at me, I can bring
- 12:45my child back to life, but what can't you do for your husband
- 12:48and his brother? She pulled up an herb, applied
- 12:52it to the little mouse and it was restored to life.
- 12:55Then they both disappeared down their hole.
- 12:58The woman greatly rejoiced when she saw this.
- 13:01She also plucked the same herb, put the heads on the bodies and
- 13:04applied it to them. Her husband and brother-in-law
- 13:07came back to life, but alas, she had put the wrong heads on the
- 13:11bodies. Now, my sage youth, tell me who
- 13:15was the woman's husband? Concluded the apple.
- 13:19He opened his eyes and said, certainly it is he who had the
- 13:23right head. The king was very glad.
- 13:28A joiner, a tailor, and a priest were travelling together at one
- 13:31time, began the apple. Night came on when they were in
- 13:35the wood. They lit a huge fire and had
- 13:37their supper, and then said, Do not let us be deprived of
- 13:41employment. Each of us shall take a turn
- 13:43watching and do something in trade.
- 13:46The joiner's turn came first. He cut down the tree, and out of
- 13:50it he fashioned a man. Then he lay down and went to
- 13:53sleep while the tailor mounted guard.
- 13:56Then he saw the wooden man. He took off his clothes and put
- 13:59them on him. Last of all, the priest acted as
- 14:02a Sentinel. When he saw the man, he said, I
- 14:06will pray to God that he may give this man a soul.
- 14:09He prayed, and his wish was granted.
- 14:12Now, my boy, can you tell me who made the man he who gave him the
- 14:17soul? The king was pleased, and said
- 14:19to himself, That is 2. The apple again went on.
- 14:24There was a diviner, A physician, and a swift runner.
- 14:27The diviner said There is a certain Prince who was ill with
- 14:31such and such a disease. The physician said, I know a
- 14:35cure for it, I will run with it, said the swift runner.
- 14:39The physician prepared the medicine, and the man ran with
- 14:42it. Now tell me who cured the King's
- 14:45son, Said the apple. He who made the medicine,
- 14:48replied the boy. When he had given the three
- 14:51answers. The apple rolled back into the
- 14:52casket, and the King put it back in his pocket.
- 14:56The boy arose, embraced the king, and kissed him.
- 14:59Many men have been here, but I have not been able to speak
- 15:02before. Now tell me what you wish, and I
- 15:04will do it. The King asked that his viziers
- 15:08might be restored to life, and they all went away with rich
- 15:10presents. The end.
- 15:40This was a nice quick couple of stories.
- 15:42I like the quick endings and they were pretty easy to
- 15:44understand. I like that they didn't have
- 15:47hard feelings with the Shepherd and that he got his back pay
- 15:49even after kidnapping their child.
- 15:52And the second one's riddles I've heard in other places.
- 15:55I know I heard the who's head on whose body in the Shimla Village
- 16:00tales. They seem to be the kind of
- 16:02stories that get people to have a discussion.
- 16:05There are two more Georgian tales in this book, followed by
- 16:07the Mingrelian and Gurian tales. So we'll keep reading.
- 16:12The story and the podcast Shout out is to Betwixt the Sheets.
- 16:15It is a crossover between history and sex and is hosted by
- 16:19Doctor Kate Lister. It's a lot of fun to find out
- 16:22about the history we try to hide.
- 16:25And the listener shout out is to Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.
- 16:30It's the largest city in Gujarat.
- 16:32My cousin's wife's family stay with me is from Gujarat and I
- 16:36hope to visit them someday. I would also love to see the
- 16:39garba folk dance that the area is famous for.
- 16:42And so I say in Gujarati to my listener in Ahmedabad, Abhara
- 16:46Ane Subraratri, thank you. Good night.
