- 0:00Hi everybody, and welcome back to another episode of the show
- 0:04where we discuss some of the most groundbreaking advancements
- 0:07in science and technology and contemplate the actual wonders
- 0:11of the universe. In today's episode, we're
- 0:13focusing on NASA's monumental achievement of completing its
- 0:17first ever sample return mission from an asteroid.
- 0:20The mission, named Osiris Rex, set the science capsule all the
- 0:23way to asteroid Benduin back, covering a journey of about 1.2
- 0:28billion miles. Launched in 2016, the capsule
- 0:31reentered Earth's atmosphere at around 27,000 mph and has
- 0:36delivered several 100 grams of asteroid material, offering
- 0:41invaluable data that could help scientists understand our solar
- 0:44system's earliest stages. Now, the capsule from Osiris Rex
- 0:48spacecraft made its grand reentry into Earth's atmosphere
- 0:51and finally landed in the Department of Defense's Utah
- 0:54Test and Training Range. The landing site dimensions are
- 0:58about 30 miles by 8.5 miles, who's chosen primarily because
- 1:03of its status as the largest restricted airspace in the
- 1:06United States. This venue has also been used
- 1:09for previous NASA sample return mission such as Genesis and
- 1:13Stardust, and the mission involved an incredible degree of
- 1:16precision. Sandra Freund, the Osiris Rex
- 1:19program manager, explained how the spacecraft had to navigate
- 1:23with remarkable accuracy to rendezvous with asteroid Bennu
- 1:26coming within just a meter of the target during the sample
- 1:29collection phase in 2020. And recovery teams promptly
- 1:33collect this sample from the Utah desert, initiating the
- 1:36Campsule's journey towards analysis and examination.
- 1:41So why did NASA invest in a simple return mission from an
- 1:44asteroid? The principal investigator for
- 1:46Osiris Recht noted that scientists are keen to study
- 1:50trace organic molecule chemistry from the asteroid material.
- 1:54It's not about suggesting that life originated elsewhere.
- 1:57Rather, the idea is that essential building blocks of
- 2:00life, often referred to as organic compounds, might have
- 2:04been ferried to Earth by celestial bodies like asteroids.
- 2:07And to adequately test this hypothesis, researchers need
- 2:11samples directly from these asteroids, like Bennu and
- 2:15previous meteorites were used. But they had limitations, such
- 2:19as the lack of information about their origin and the risk of
- 2:22contamination during their journey through Earth's
- 2:24atmosphere. And Osiris Rex offers pristine
- 2:28samples, providing an unparalleled opportunity for
- 2:31scientists to confirm or refute longstanded theories.
- 2:35And NASA isn't alone in this quest to bring back asteroid
- 2:37samples. The Japanese space agency JAXA
- 2:40has already completed two such missions, Hayabusa and Hayabusa
- 2:442 in the latter managed to return around 5 grams of
- 2:48material from asteroid Ryugu in 2020.
- 2:51And unlike competitive races, researchers say that these
- 2:54missions are complementary. They work together, and both
- 2:58asteroids Ryugu and Bennu may look similar with their spinning
- 3:02top shapes, but they are different in size and color.
- 3:06By examining the sample side by side, scientists can gain
- 3:09valuable insights into both the similarities and differences
- 3:12between these celestial bodies. And Loretta puts it this is not
- 3:17about two separate sample analysis programs, but rather a
- 3:20worldwide collective scientific endeavor.
- 3:24To comprehend Earth's formation, it's essential to scrutinize the
- 3:28whole solar system. Planets and star systems form
- 3:31from collapsing gas clouds, which are represented by
- 3:34remnants found in the oldest asteroids and asteroid.
- 3:38Bennu is considered to be a snapshot of the solar system's
- 3:41early days, dating back approximately 4.5 billion years.
- 3:45And unlike Earth, which undergoes natural processes like
- 3:49erosion that wipe out the earliest history, asteroids like
- 3:52Venue serve as cosmic time capsules.
- 3:55They hold the raw materials that predate even the oldest rocks on
- 3:58Earth, making them incredibly precious for scientific
- 4:01analysis. Osiris Rex has now brought a
- 4:05fragment of this early solar system history back to Earth,
- 4:09and researchers are eager to commence detailed
- 4:11investigations. And after successfully returning
- 4:15the sample, you might wonder what's next for the Osiris Rex
- 4:19spacecraft. Well, it's got a new mission and
- 4:22a new name, Osiris Apex. The spacecraft will now set its
- 4:27sights on asteroid Apophis, which will make a close approach
- 4:32to Earth in the coming years, potentially even visible to the
- 4:35naked eye from specific locations.
- 4:38And Osiris Apex will be tasked with following Apophis around
- 4:43Earth, providing unique opportunity for additional
- 4:45groundbreaking scientific observations.
- 4:49And As for the banning sample, it's going to be transported to
- 4:53Johnson Space Center in Houston, and within an hour and a half of
- 4:58the landing of this capsule, it was transported by helicopter to
- 5:02a temporary clean room set up in a hangar on the training range
- 5:06where it is now connected to a continuous flow of nitrogen.
- 5:10And getting a sample under a nitrogen purge, as scientists
- 5:14call it, was one of the Osiris Trexes team's most critical
- 5:18tasks. And nitrogen is a gas that
- 5:20doesn't interact with most other chemicals, and a continuous flow
- 5:23of it into the sample container inside the capsule will keep out
- 5:27earthly contaminants to leave the sample pure for scientific
- 5:32analysis. The return samples collected
- 5:34from Bennu will help scientists worldwide make discoveries to
- 5:37better understand planetary formation and the origin of
- 5:41organics and water that led to life on Earth, as well as
- 5:44benefit all of humanity by learning more about potentially
- 5:48hazardous asteroids. Now the Bennu sample is about
- 5:528.8 oz, or 250 grams, and it'll be transported in its unopened
- 5:57canister by aircraft and NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston
- 6:01on Monday, September 25th. Curation scientists then will
- 6:05disassemble the canister, extract and weigh the sample,
- 6:09create an inventory of these rocks, dust in overtime,
- 6:13distribute pieces of Bennu to scientists all over the world.
- 6:18And this delivery of this asteroid sample, which is the
- 6:21first for the United States, went according to plan thanks to
- 6:24the massive effort of hundreds of people who remotely directed
- 6:28the spacecraft's journey since its launch September 8th, 2016.
- 6:33And the team then guided it to arrive at Bennu December 3rd,
- 6:372018 and through the search for a safe sample collection site
- 6:41between 2019 and 2020 and sample collection on October 20th,
- 6:462020, and also during the return trip home on May 10th, 2021.
- 6:52Now, after traveling billions of miles to Benu and back, the
- 6:56Osiris Rex spacecraft released its sample capsule towards
- 7:00Earth's atmosphere at 6:42 AM Eastern Time, and the spacecraft
- 7:05was 63,000 miles from Earth's surface at the time, about 1/3
- 7:10the distance from the Earth to the Moon, traveling at 27,650
- 7:14mph. The capsule pierced the
- 7:16atmosphere at 10:42 AM Eastern Time off the coast of California
- 7:22at an altitude of about 83 miles, and within 10 minutes it
- 7:26landed on the military range. Along the way, 2 parachutes
- 7:29successfully deployed to stabilize and slow the capsule
- 7:32down to around 11 mph. Radar, infrared and optical
- 7:37instruments in the air and on the ground track the capsule to
- 7:41its landing coordinates inside a 36 by 8.5 mile area of the
- 7:46range. Within several minutes, the
- 7:48recovery team was dispatched to the capsule's location to
- 7:51inspect it and also retrieve it. And the team found the capsule
- 7:54in really good shape at around 9:07 AM Eastern Time and or
- 7:5911:07 AM Eastern Time. Excuse me.
- 8:02And then determined if it was safe to approach.
- 8:05And within 70 minutes they wrapped it up for a safe
- 8:07transport to a temporary clean room on the range where it
- 8:10remains under continuous supervision and a nitrogen
