- 1:16Speaker 1: playoff discussion in just a second. We'll have all of
- 1:21Speaker 1: our rankings and everything, but When I talk about the
- 1:24Speaker 1: churning over of the playoffs in the college world, Brooks,
- 1:30Speaker 1: can you do a quick number for me of how
- 1:33Speaker 1: many new teams we had in the playoffs last year,
- 1:36Speaker 1: the second year of the 12 teams, after the first year?
- 1:39Speaker 1: Do you have that number off the top of your head?
- 1:40Speaker 1: I don't, but it seems like it was close to five.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Tulane and James Madison were new.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Alabama, Oklahoma.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Texas Tech was new.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Alabama, Oklahoma, Tulane. Texas Tech. That's up to five right there.
- 1:52Speaker 1: I knew it was at least five. I didn't know.
- 1:54Speaker 2: A & M was new.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Six. Miami.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Okay, so you're already at 50%.
- 1:58Speaker 1: That's seven. Seven of 12. Yep. So now you're over 50%. Ironically,
- 2:03Speaker 1: in the 14-team playoff in the NFL, on average, they
- 2:07Speaker 1: churn out, since they've gone to 14, almost a 50%
- 2:11Speaker 1: turnover clip of new playoff teams every year. We've always
- 2:15Speaker 1: known the NFL had great parity, and it always shows
- 2:18Speaker 1: up with the the churning of the playoff teams. And
- 2:22Speaker 1: I think we're getting that in college football. Do you
- 2:25Speaker 1: think we'll have almost that same 50% turnover again this year?
- 2:29Speaker 1: Let's work it out live here. I mean, I think
- 2:31Speaker 1: you'll probably have a new group of five, right? So
- 2:33Speaker 1: just in the 12th team. Well, I don't know. Boise's
- 2:35Speaker 1: already been there once. No, it's new year to year,
- 2:38Speaker 1: not first time. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, year to year. Okay,
- 2:40Speaker 1: so it's year to year. Yeah, Tulane and James Madison
- 2:43Speaker 1: will not be back. Right, so you'll have a new
- 2:44Speaker 1: group of six. There's at least one. Can you show
- 2:47Speaker 1: us the AP poll? from earlier this week. We'll just
- 2:50Speaker 1: look at the AP poll and just look at the
- 2:52Speaker 1: top 12 teams. Ole Miss was new, too, by the way.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Who?
- 2:55Speaker 1: Ole Miss was new, so that's eight of 12. Eight
- 2:57Speaker 1: of 12. Yeah. So Ohio State, Georgia, Notre Dame would
- 3:01Speaker 1: be fresh. So that'd be one. Texas would be new.
- 3:03Speaker 1: That'd be two. Indiana, Oklahoma were there. Miami was there.
- 3:07Speaker 1: LSU would be three. LSU would be three. You got
- 3:09Speaker 1: Ole Miss, A & M, and a group of five,
- 3:11Speaker 1: which would be four. So we'd have four of the 12,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and that's just after one week. It could turn up
- 3:16Speaker 1: to more. But it does look like this year it
- 3:19Speaker 1: may settle down to less than 50%. Well, I mean,
- 3:22Speaker 1: just keep going, though, right there. USC would be new
- 3:25Speaker 1: if they were there. USC would be new. BYU would
- 3:26Speaker 1: be new if it's them rather than Tech. Penn State
- 3:31Speaker 1: would be new this year if they made it. SMU
- 3:34Speaker 1: would be new. Tennessee would be new. So all the
- 3:36Speaker 1: contenders would be new. Yeah, I mean, if we get
- 3:38Speaker 1: a little flip in the polls right there, I mean,
- 3:40Speaker 1: if some of these teams climb. When does that happen?
- 3:42Speaker 1: I don't know. When does that ever happen? I mean,
- 3:43Speaker 1: I think it's realistic to feel like you could get
- 3:46Speaker 1: five new ones. I think that's a realistic number. You're
- 3:48Speaker 1: almost halfway there at five. I mean, 50% year over year,
- 3:53Speaker 1: I think we could start to expect that in college football. Yeah,
- 3:56Speaker 1: I'll live with that. Do you like the parody of
- 3:59Speaker 1: the NFL? I do. I get tired of seeing the
- 4:01Speaker 1: same teams. And listen, if you're one of the teams
- 4:04Speaker 1: that's a blue blood, you said you were joking about Alabama.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Alabama loved the fact that they were in the 14
- 4:09Speaker 1: playoff every single year. They loved it.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I don't blame them.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I would love that too. You're not a parody fan
- 4:14Speaker 1: if you're Alabama- Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, Georgia. Yeah, you're
- 4:19Speaker 1: blue bloods. But as a viewer, I don't necessarily want
- 4:22Speaker 1: to see the same teams over and over. Like last year,
- 4:25Speaker 1: the Texans got in the NFL playoffs. They were fun, right?
- 4:28Speaker 1: I mean, that was kind of, you know, it was
- 4:31Speaker 1: fun to have the Texans back, you know, good enough
- 4:34Speaker 1: to be in the playoffs again. You know, I'm trying
- 4:37Speaker 1: to think of Carolina. Carolina was back in the playoffs.
- 4:40Speaker 1: They almost beat the Rams. You know, the Rams ended
- 4:42Speaker 1: up in the NFC Championship game. They barely survived getting
- 4:44Speaker 1: out of Carolina.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Yep.
- 4:46Speaker 1: To me, it's fun to have some new blood in there,
- 4:48Speaker 1: and it's not just always the Cowboys. And I'm using
- 4:52Speaker 1: that because the Cowboys are America's team, not because they've
- 4:54Speaker 1: done anything in the playoffs recently. But it's always the Cowboys,
- 4:58Speaker 1: or always the Packers, or always all these historically great teams.
- 5:04Speaker 2: The Chiefs weren't in it last year. I mean, I
- 5:06Speaker 2: know because of an injury.
- 5:07Speaker 1: But still, if they get back there this year, that's
- 5:10Speaker 1: one of the new teams getting towards that 50% mark.
- 5:11Speaker 1: But it was refreshing to not watch the Chiefs just
- 5:14Speaker 1: walk through that thing again.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Not only was it not the first time they were
- 5:17Speaker 3: in the playoffs since 14, it was the first time
- 5:19Speaker 3: they weren't in the AFC championship at least since, what,
- 5:22Speaker 3: like 18?
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah. It'll be interesting to see as we unveil our
- 5:25Speaker 1: playoff teams how many people believe the Chiefs can get
- 5:29Speaker 1: back there or not. with the Broncos and Chargers and
- 5:31Speaker 1: other teams standing in their way. With that in mind,
- 5:35Speaker 1: of the staff here, let's go ahead and throw up
- 5:38Speaker 1: the playoff teams. You got Lance's or do I? Here
- 5:43Speaker 1: is Lance Taylor's. We'll do his first, and we'll do Forrester, Brooks, Brown,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and mine. Lance attending a funeral today, so he was
- 5:49Speaker 1: unable to be with us, but he gave us his
- 5:51Speaker 1: picks ahead of time. I'll lock it down right there.
- 5:53Speaker 1: So Lance goes with Buffalo. Here are his AFC division winners. Buffalo, Baltimore, Houston,
- 6:01Speaker 1: and the LA Chargers. Okay. He likes in the wild card, Indianapolis, Jacksonville,
- 6:05Speaker 1: and New England. Okay. Who is the blatant missing there
- 6:10Speaker 1: from him? He's usually a big Bengals fan. Patriots are in,
- 6:14Speaker 1: but they don't win the division. You're right. The Bengals,
- 6:17Speaker 1: he likes to burrow. He thinks only one team out
- 6:21Speaker 1: of that division. Indianapolis is an interesting inclusion for him.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I find that to be kind of interesting. More on
- 6:29Speaker 1: that later. Okay. In the NFC. I mean, he's got
- 6:31Speaker 1: three teams out of the AFC South. He really does.
- 6:35Speaker 1: He does. Indianapolis, Jacksonville, and Houston. Tennessee is the only
- 6:38Speaker 1: AFC South team he doesn't have in. He does. In
- 6:40Speaker 1: the NFC, he likes Dallas, the Bears, the Panthers, and
- 6:44Speaker 1: his LA Rams. Which is uncharacteristic of him, I think,
- 6:48Speaker 1: to pick them. Well, more on that in a moment.
- 6:50Speaker 1: His wild cards, Chicago, San Francisco, and.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Seattle. Did I get that right? Because he's got Detroit
- 6:59Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl. Where did I mess up? I
- 7:03Speaker 1: went with his sport and state Super Bowl pick, I thought.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Was I right about that, Brooks? Isn't that what he
- 7:07Speaker 1: put on sport and state? Yeah, he's got Detroit in.
- 7:10Speaker 1: You've got Chicago twice, Brown. That's typical of you with polls.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Chicago is your Iowa. Let me go back and look
- 7:15Speaker 1: at it. No, that's what I've done. I've done Chicago twice.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Detroit should be a wild card. Either wins the North or.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Is a wild card. I got Iowa twice in his
- 7:22Speaker 2: top 25.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Chicago's a new Iowa. I did Lance's as a favor
- 7:27Speaker 1: to him. He was paying respects to a longtime friend.
- 7:32Speaker 1: So if you guys want to jump on my back
- 7:33Speaker 1: for helping Lance out, go right ahead. He has Detroit
- 7:36Speaker 1: winning the division. Chicago is the wild card. Are you
- 7:38Speaker 1: sure about that? Yes. Okay. And that's got to be
- 7:42Speaker 1: the way he has it. Forrester, how do you have yours?
- 7:48Speaker 5: I think I did this wrong because all I did
- 7:50Speaker 5: was make who makes the playoffs.
- 7:52Speaker 1: That's quite all right.
- 7:54Speaker 2: That's all I picked.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Show me who makes the playoffs.
- 7:56Speaker 2: We'll go AFC.
- 7:58Speaker 5: I got my four division winners, the Bills, the Texans,
- 8:03Speaker 5: the Ravens, and the Broncos. I'm a bigger believer in
- 8:05Speaker 5: the Broncos and Bo Nix than some.
- 8:09Speaker 1: We're damn.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Fort M, go Ducks, all that. Then I got the Chargers,
- 8:16Speaker 5: the Bengals, and the Chiefs as the wild card.
- 8:19Speaker 1: So you think Mahomes gets the Chiefs back there?
- 8:22Speaker 5: I do.
- 8:22Speaker 1: In Kelsey's final year, likely. That's a legit, that looks
- 8:27Speaker 1: very familiar to me. That's a legit looking field. I
- 8:30Speaker 1: like that as well. Give me your NFC teams. And
- 8:31Speaker 1: you did it correctly. It's exactly the way you're supposed.
- 8:33Speaker 5: To do it.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I like that. That's a clean look right there.
- 8:36Speaker 2: All right, NFC.
- 8:38Speaker 5: I got LT's Rams winning their division.
- 8:41Speaker 2: I got the Eagles. I got the Lions.
- 8:44Speaker 5: And I got Jimmy's Bucks winning the vaunted South.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Should be noted that he's a Falcons fan, but he
- 8:53Speaker 1: picked the Bucks here. And then your wild card teams are?
- 8:56Speaker 2: I got the Bears, I got the Cowboys, and I
- 8:59Speaker 2: got the Vikings. Yeah.
- 9:00Speaker 1: These are our hard rock bet NFL playoff teams. That
- 9:04Speaker 1: is for sure. Brooks, give me yours.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I want to admit a whole bracket.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I guess we did that. Wow, we all did this differently.
- 9:11Speaker 1: That's okay.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Exact clarity.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Make sure you didn't put a team in twice. Well,
- 9:14Speaker 1: that's going to be very small on your little screen there,
- 9:16Speaker 1: so go ahead and tell us. I did it vertically.
- 9:18Speaker 1: It's good. It's good. Much like a Big Ten replay officials,
- 9:24Speaker 1: only you are able to see that.
- 9:25Speaker 2: All right. I'm going to read it to you first
- 9:27Speaker 2: before I turn around.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Actually, there's probably no point turning it around, though, because
- 9:32Speaker 3: I don't know if this two shot.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Here, I can give you a live ugly zoom.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, let's do it. Let's do an ugly zoom live.
- 9:38Speaker 3: I'll start with the AFC. I've got Buffalo as my
- 9:41Speaker 3: number one seed. I've got Houston as my two seed.
- 9:47Speaker 3: I've got the Chargers as my three seed. I've got
- 9:49Speaker 3: Baltimore as my four seed. I've got Kansas City back
- 9:52Speaker 3: in the playoffs as the five seed. Don't have them
- 9:54Speaker 3: win the division, though. That's the Chargers. I've got Cincinnati
- 9:58Speaker 3: in as a wild card as the... sixth seed, and
- 10:01Speaker 3: then I have the Jags as the seventh seed in
- 10:04Speaker 3: as a wild card.
- 10:06Speaker 2: In the NFC, I have the Rams as the number
- 10:08Speaker 2: one seed. I think they're too good.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I know there's a lot of hype there, and Lance
- 10:12Speaker 3: is very weary of that, but.
- 10:14Speaker 2: I'm buying the hype this year. Detroit is my two seed.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I've got Dallas as my three seed winning the NFC East.
- 10:22Speaker 3: I've got the Panthers winning the NFC South this year.
- 10:27Speaker 3: And I have my wildcard teams, Philly as the five seed,
- 10:32Speaker 3: Seattle as the six seed, and the Packers as the
- 10:35Speaker 3: seven seed.
- 10:36Speaker 2: And I have the Rams beating the Bills.
- 10:39Speaker 3: I think the Bills get back to the Super Bowl
- 10:41Speaker 3: for the first time since the 90s with Joe Brady
- 10:44Speaker 3: as their new head coach. But I'm buying the Rams
- 10:48Speaker 3: and Matt Stafford walking it off and calling it a career.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Yep.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Hardrock.bet backslash clay. Our playoff picks. Hardrock.bet backslash clay. Brownie,
- 11:00Speaker 1: give me your picks. All right. I'm going to go
- 11:01Speaker 1: in the AFC with Buffalo winning the East. That's probably
- 11:04Speaker 1: the easiest one to call. Worst division in the NFL.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Cincinnati winning the North. Houston out of the South. And
- 11:11Speaker 1: Kansas City comes back and takes the West. What?
- 11:14Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 11:15Speaker 1: No, why are you laughing? Go ahead. My wild cards
- 11:20Speaker 1: have got Baltimore, the Chargers, and Jacksonville. It's just funny
- 11:25Speaker 1: that my bold prediction with Sporting State was the AFC champion.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I said it on the show yesterday. The Broncos and
- 11:30Speaker 1: Patriots both missing the playoffs. Do you have the Broncos
- 11:36Speaker 1: or the Patriots? I don't.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 11:38Speaker 1: So either it wasn't so bold or somebody's a copycat. Nope,
- 11:41Speaker 1: not a copycat. NFC, Dallas, Chicago, Carolina, and the LA Rams.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And my wild cards are Minnesota, Philadelphia, and Seattle. Now,
- 11:51Speaker 1: you should know that I'm sticking with Seattle without knowing
- 11:54Speaker 1: the outcome of this MRI today on the help of
- 11:57Speaker 1: Sam Darnold. So I had Seattle before the game last night,
- 12:00Speaker 1: sticking with them. I mean, could be without their quarterback
- 12:03Speaker 1: the rest of the year, I guess, right? You have
- 12:05Speaker 1: the Rams over Cincinnati. I got the Rams over Cincinnati
- 12:09Speaker 1: in my Super Bowl. Joe Burrow gets back there and
- 12:11Speaker 1: loses again.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:13Speaker 1: All right, very familiar-looking one on the AFC, Brown. Here
- 12:18Speaker 1: is my AFC, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Houston, and Kansas City winning
- 12:23Speaker 1: the divisions for me. And the wild card, give me Baltimore, Indianapolis,
- 12:28Speaker 1: and the Chargers, much like LT. I think the Colts
- 12:31Speaker 1: can get there, giving the AFC South a second team.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I think Baltimore can get back there, but not win
- 12:38Speaker 1: a lot of games. But I believe in Cincinnati. I
- 12:41Speaker 1: believe in KC getting back. I like the Chargers, and
- 12:45Speaker 1: as my bold prediction was, no Broncos, no Patriots. I'm
- 12:49Speaker 1: interested to think if the Patriots had won last night,
- 12:51Speaker 1: would the Patriots have been in yours? No. I mean,
- 12:54Speaker 1: I'm leaving Seattle in mind with their quarterback's future unknown. No. Yeah.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Seattle's in mind as well.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:00Speaker 1: In the NFC, Dallas, Detroit, Tampa Bay, and the Rams
- 13:05Speaker 1: winning the division. I go Eagles, Seattle, and the New
- 13:09Speaker 1: York Giants. the New York Giants making the playoffs. Don't
- 13:14Speaker 1: love Jackson Dart, but I love their coach. I believe
- 13:17Speaker 1: he has a plan to win football games, and I
- 13:20Speaker 1: think it'll work in New York. So the Giants gets
- 13:24Speaker 1: the great NYC back to the playoffs, or New Jersey,
- 13:28Speaker 1: however you root locally there in the five boroughs. So
- 13:33Speaker 1: congratulations to all the playoff teams. We never get things wrong.
- 13:39Speaker 1: You can be a part of future bets and all
- 13:41Speaker 1: the weekly fun. Hardrock.bet backslash clay. Hardrock.bet backslash clay. We
- 13:47Speaker 1: get to clay coming up in just a second in
- 13:50Speaker 1: our next segment. By the way, yesterday, the great Barry
- 13:54Speaker 1: Melrose passed away at age of 70, played the game
- 13:58Speaker 1: in the NHL, was a coach in the NHL, I think,
- 14:03Speaker 1: with the LA Kings when they had Wayne Gretzky. I
- 14:06Speaker 1: believe he was the coach. But most of us fell
- 14:10Speaker 1: in love with Barry Melrose as an ESPN analyst for hockey,
- 14:14Speaker 1: both in game and in studio. Got a Parkinson's diagnosis
- 14:18Speaker 1: and passed away at the age of 70. I loved
- 14:22Speaker 1: Barry Melrose because he made the hockey highlights fun. He
- 14:26Speaker 1: looked like a hockey player to me. The way Barry
- 14:29Speaker 1: Melrose looked is the way hockey should look. That's right.
- 14:33Speaker 1: He was the hockey expert for me. I know nothing
- 14:36Speaker 1: about hockey, but if Barry Melrose had said the puck
- 14:38Speaker 1: was blue, I would have believed Barry Melrose. And I
- 14:41Speaker 1: think that's the greatest compliment you could pay him is
- 14:43Speaker 1: that I think he made people that aren't fans of
- 14:46Speaker 1: his sport somewhat of a fan just because of the
- 14:50Speaker 1: way he presented it. And he and Steve Levy were
- 14:52Speaker 1: so good together doing the hockey highlights for ESPN sport.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I just really, I don't follow and Barry Melrose made
- 15:00Speaker 1: it fun. So, um, I think that's about as nice
- 15:03Speaker 1: a thing as you could say about a guy that
- 15:05Speaker 1: chose to do that for the rest of his career.
- 15:08Speaker 1: And he will be missed, man. I mean, he was
- 15:10Speaker 1: the voice of hockey for me. Yeah. So Barry Melrose
- 15:14Speaker 1: passing at the age of 70. When we come back,
- 15:17Speaker 1: we talk to Clay Travis. This is the next round
- 15:20Speaker 1: presented by Hard Rock Bets on Sport and State. Clay
- 15:24Speaker 1: Travis will be with us momentarily. I had a chance
- 15:28Speaker 1: to enjoy some great Crockett coffee. It's in your head now.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Some great Crockett coffee earlier this morning. That's a coffee
- 15:35Speaker 1: that was started by Clay Travis, Buck Sexton, and Buck's
- 15:39Speaker 1: brother Mason, named after the great Davy Crockett, the hunter,
- 15:42Speaker 1: the storyteller, the patriot, the backwoods legend. You look at
- 15:45Speaker 1: the logo, Davy surfing on the back of crocodiles, you
- 15:48Speaker 1: know this coffee means business. 100% Arabica beans, high-altitude beans,
- 15:54Speaker 1: small batch roasted right here in America's heartland. and shipped
- 15:57Speaker 1: fresh roasted, never sits in a warehouse for six months
- 16:00Speaker 1: like a lot of other brands. You can get it light, medium, dark, decaffeinated, organic,
- 16:04Speaker 1: even that mushroom blend, whole bean, ground, or K-cups. However
- 16:08Speaker 1: you need it, they can get it to you, and
- 16:09Speaker 1: you can set up a subscription, and it shows up
- 16:12Speaker 1: on schedule. You can change it, cancel it, anytime you want,
- 16:15Speaker 1: the way the free market intended. Free shipping on orders

- 16:39Speaker 1: some good. CrockettCoffee.com. That's CrockettCoffee.com. C-R-O-C-K-E-T-T, CrockettCoffee.com. Tomorrow is, speaking
- 16:52Speaker 1: of Tunnel to Towers, tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of
- 16:56Speaker 1: of 9-11. Last night, 2,977 lights, one light for every
- 17:05Speaker 1: live lost, were on display on the skyline of New York.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Video here of the lights in different formations and eventually
- 17:12Speaker 1: making the Twin Tower. 25 years ago, and it's for
- 17:18Speaker 1: those that lived through it, it is a memory that
- 17:20Speaker 1: comes back on September 11th every year. And anytime you
- 17:25Speaker 1: see video or when you're in that great city or
- 17:28Speaker 1: when you're outside the Pentagon, you remember what happened on
- 17:31Speaker 1: that day. But that light show last night honoring the
- 17:35Speaker 1: 2,977 lights, one light for every life lost on that
- 17:40Speaker 1: day 25 years ago tomorrow. And I would tell you,
- 17:44Speaker 1: I mentioned that maybe in honor of it being 25 years,
- 17:49Speaker 1: we should take tomorrow off. And Brownie said, um, we work.
- 17:55Speaker 1: That's what we do as Americans. We work. And, uh,
- 17:59Speaker 1: you know, I, I understand your, your thought there. And
- 18:02Speaker 1: I think we need to make sure this is not
- 18:04Speaker 1: just one of these days we gloss by, but, um,
- 18:07Speaker 1: but that's what we do as Americans is we work, man.
- 18:10Speaker 1: They try, you basically were saying they tried to change
- 18:12Speaker 1: our lives. They tried to change our lives. Let's don't
- 18:14Speaker 1: change our lives for them. Let's keep doing what we do. And, um,
- 18:18Speaker 1: those firemen and those police officers that passed away, they
- 18:21Speaker 1: were doing their job, man. And they were in there
- 18:23Speaker 1: trying to save lives. So they worked the day after
- 18:25Speaker 1: they worked on September 12th. That's right. So I think
- 18:27Speaker 1: we work in their honor. So, um, I, I, I, that,
- 18:31Speaker 1: that would be my opinion is you just, you just
- 18:33Speaker 1: keep working as Americans do what we do. And it's
- 18:36Speaker 1: not like we're busting rocks up here. I get it, but, uh, it's,
- 18:39Speaker 1: it's what our country does. It's, it's one of the
- 18:41Speaker 1: many things that makes us the greatest nation in the world. And, um,
- 18:44Speaker 1: that's what we do, man.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Yep.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I was moved when you said that.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Really?
- 18:48Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. I'm not joking. That's a great way to
- 18:51Speaker 1: look at things. Clay will join us momentarily. We're getting
- 18:56Speaker 1: ready for a big college football weekend, and we've got
- 18:59Speaker 1: a couple of marquee games this weekend other than just
- 19:04Speaker 1: the Battle of the SEC and the Big Ten on
- 19:06Speaker 1: the main stage. A couple other SEC reputation games. Mississippi
- 19:11Speaker 1: State at Minnesota is one. More on that later. But
- 19:16Speaker 1: on Friday night, we get SEC versus Big 12 in
- 19:19Speaker 1: Missouri and Kansas. Now, it does feel like Kansas has
- 19:24Speaker 1: taken a step back. That's 7 o'clock Fox with our
- 19:27Speaker 1: friend Tim Brando on the call. It seems like Kansas
- 19:32Speaker 1: had its moment, built this beautiful new stadium, and now
- 19:35Speaker 1: is slipping back closer to what we know Kansas to be.
- 19:39Speaker 1: This is a big game for Missouri, though. It is
- 19:41Speaker 1: a huge game for Missouri, having to go on the road,
- 19:43Speaker 1: first of all. And this is, I mean, look, I'm
- 19:45Speaker 1: it's never going to be confused for the Iron Bowl
- 19:46Speaker 1: or the Ohio State Michigan game but this is a
- 19:49Speaker 1: robbery it's the border war right a lot of hate
- 19:51Speaker 1: in that game yeah there's some hate in this game
- 19:52Speaker 1: so you you've got that aspect of it you've got
- 19:55Speaker 1: Austin Simmons for Missouri making his first Missouri road start
- 19:58Speaker 1: he's a he started on the road at Ole Miss
- 20:01Speaker 1: obviously but his first road start for Missouri and you
- 20:04Speaker 1: know it's weird that it wasn't too long before that
- 20:08Speaker 1: we were talking about the head coach of Kansas taking
- 20:11Speaker 1: open jobs that were bigger jobs, how quickly that has
- 20:14Speaker 1: turned on them. Right. And can they get it back?
- 20:17Speaker 1: I mean, really, you know, the reason it's turned is
- 20:19Speaker 1: your backup quarterback. He's no longer there playing for him.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I don't know if he won the backup job at Tampa.
- 20:24Speaker 1: He actually did. Jalen Daniels is the QB too.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:28Speaker 1: He won. So he won the backup job in Tampa
- 20:30Speaker 1: and he was really good for them at Kansas and they,
- 20:32Speaker 1: it's just, it's not the same. So, I mean, this
- 20:35Speaker 1: is a huge game for Missouri. I think you can't,
- 20:39Speaker 1: I mean, look, they beat a nobody, you know, very
- 20:41Speaker 1: handily in week one. You can't go on the road
- 20:44Speaker 1: and drop a game to Kansas and be a quality
- 20:47Speaker 1: enough team to have any sort of chance to compete
- 20:50Speaker 1: in the SEC. Another game that is sort of a
- 20:53Speaker 1: reputation game, SEC versus the ACC. And Brooks, maybe you
- 20:58Speaker 1: know this off the top of your head, but last year,
- 21:00Speaker 1: SEC versus the ACC didn't turn out too well. Tennessee
- 21:04Speaker 1: needs to get georgia tech in that massive showdown going
- 21:08Speaker 1: on in atlanta this weekend too just for that sec
- 21:11Speaker 1: acc there'll be several games throughout the year that'll match
- 21:13Speaker 1: those teams together all right let's uh talk to our
- 21:17Speaker 1: guy clay travis he is uh traveling today so no
- 21:21Speaker 1: video appearance from his palatial home studio but he is
- 21:23Speaker 1: with us nonetheless clay what is up man how are
- 21:26Speaker 1: you today.
- 21:27Speaker 6: I'm doing well i'm walking through the uh nashville airport
- 21:30Speaker 6: here uh headed to uh to dallas down and back
- 21:33Speaker 6: so uh That is the activities afoot here.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Is that the Dolly Parton International Airport yet? Have they
- 21:40Speaker 1: actually made that decision?
- 21:43Speaker 6: I think that it has not officially become a reality,
- 21:47Speaker 6: but the governors, the governor, the senators and the mayor
- 21:51Speaker 6: are all in agreement that they're going to do it.
- 21:53Speaker 6: And I think the airport authority is as well. So
- 21:57Speaker 6: I don't know what the protocol or how long it takes,
- 22:00Speaker 6: but I do think it will become Dolly Parton International
- 22:03Speaker 6: sooner rather than later.
- 22:05Speaker 1: When I see celebrities walking through the airports, I keep
- 22:07Speaker 1: waiting for TMZ to walk up. So maybe TMZ will
- 22:09Speaker 1: walk up to Clay here at some point. De-escalation was
- 22:13Speaker 1: the word yesterday with LSU and SEC in this battle.
- 22:17Speaker 1: The presidents are still meeting today. What do you think
- 22:20Speaker 1: they'll discuss today, Clay, if it's not expulsion? What's going
- 22:23Speaker 1: on in that meeting in your mind?
- 22:25Speaker 6: Yeah, to me, the story here is it's like when
- 22:29Speaker 6: your dad went and got the belt. you know, after
- 22:32Speaker 6: you talk back to mom and she said, well, wait
- 22:35Speaker 6: till your dad gets home. Or if you remember at
- 22:37Speaker 6: elementary school, I don't know if they still paddle kids,
- 22:40Speaker 6: but back in the day in elementary school when the
- 22:42Speaker 6: teacher would open the drawer and pull the paddle out
- 22:45Speaker 6: and put it on the desk and, you know, these
- 22:47Speaker 6: kids would start saying, oh no, she's got the paddle out.
- 22:49Speaker 6: And then, you know, things accelerated from there. She might
- 22:52Speaker 6: stand up and slap her hand with the paddle. For
- 22:55Speaker 6: everybody who remembers that, it feels like the court filings
- 22:59Speaker 6: was the SEC saying, Daddy's home.
- 23:01Speaker 1: I'm going to get my belt.
- 23:03Speaker 6: Or the teacher standing up and smacking the hand and
- 23:06Speaker 6: letting it be known that the next thing to get
- 23:08Speaker 6: smacked was the butt. And I think that what LSU
- 23:12Speaker 6: did is finally engage in a rational behavior, which they
- 23:17Speaker 6: had not been engaged in before. And so it feels like,
- 23:20Speaker 6: to me, they've acknowledged, hey, we're going to step back
- 23:25Speaker 6: from the abyss here and I also think winning big
- 23:28Speaker 6: over Clemson sort of exacerbated the risk reward. I said,
- 23:33Speaker 6: I think with you guys on the show last week,
- 23:35Speaker 6: and I certainly have said it on my shows, these
- 23:38Speaker 6: guys were never going to change the outcome of a game.
- 23:41Speaker 6: And I'm not saying that making a decision to go
- 23:44Speaker 6: get pro players. Hey, if Leonard Fournette and his prime
- 23:47Speaker 6: was suddenly available or Jaden Daniels was available or, Jamar
- 23:52Speaker 6: Chase was to pick three different former LSU players. I mean,
- 23:55Speaker 6: I think that's a different calculation. Guys not good enough
- 23:59Speaker 6: to make NFL rosters are unlikely to make a difference
- 24:03Speaker 6: for LSU. And so I think given how big they
- 24:06Speaker 6: won over Clemson and the fact that they certainly look
- 24:09Speaker 6: like a playoff team in week one has also made
- 24:13Speaker 6: them recalibrate the risks associated with deciding to bring those
- 24:17Speaker 6: guys in.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Clay, I personally think, and I've talked to enough people
- 24:22Speaker 1: that I don't think I'm just having an opinion here.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I think this is a very informed opinion, to be
- 24:26Speaker 1: honest with you. That the SEC's issue is the heavy-handed
- 24:30Speaker 1: involvement of the Louisiana governor in LSU athletics. That I
- 24:34Speaker 1: don't think Greg Sankey and the SEC, and the SEC presidents,
- 24:38Speaker 1: it should be noted this is not just Greg Sankey
- 24:40Speaker 1: acting independently. He's acting on behalf of the other 15 presidents.
- 24:43Speaker 1: I don't think they feel like the athletic director and
- 24:47Speaker 1: the president have any sort of authority at that school
- 24:50Speaker 1: that the governor and Lane Kiffin basically are running this thing.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I think that was Sankey's issue. And the only way
- 24:56Speaker 1: he has no authority over the Louisiana governor, the only
- 24:59Speaker 1: way he could do anything was to attack his child,
- 25:01Speaker 1: like you said, which is LSU football. And I think
- 25:04Speaker 1: that's the big issue here.
- 25:06Speaker 6: I think that certainly is a big part of it.
- 25:08Speaker 6: And the other aspect here I would point out is, Actually,
- 25:13Speaker 6: the incentive structure for Louisiana politicians is just to feud
- 25:19Speaker 6: with the SEC and the NCAA because it's good for
- 25:23Speaker 6: them because it kind of circles the wagon and it's
- 25:27Speaker 6: everybody against Louisiana. And so if you're a senator or
- 25:31Speaker 6: you're a congressman or you're a governor, you don't stand
- 25:35Speaker 6: to lose at all. I mean, I thought it was
- 25:36Speaker 6: funny when the attorney general showed up in an LSU
- 25:39Speaker 6: purple blouse.
- 25:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:41Speaker 6: And said, go Tigers, as her opening statement before the
- 25:44Speaker 6: court hearing. I mean, I think that kind of gave
- 25:47Speaker 6: you a sense for how this is going to play out.
- 25:49Speaker 6: Big picture, leaving aside Louisiana, I also think you have
- 25:52Speaker 6: to keep in mind, all of these court cases are
- 25:55Speaker 6: being filed in local state courts, which are the most
- 26:00Speaker 6: likely to rule in favor of local players, right? Whether
- 26:04Speaker 6: it's Trinidad Chambliss in Mississippi, I know everybody's forgotten about
- 26:08Speaker 6: the Brendan Sorsby story. But the guy gambled on like
- 26:12Speaker 6: 500 different games or whatever the heck it was, and
- 26:15Speaker 6: a West Texas court was going to say, hey, you're
- 26:17Speaker 6: eligible to play for Texas Tech. To me, the LSU
- 26:21Speaker 6: situation is somewhat analogous to what we saw happen with
- 26:24Speaker 6: Texas Tech and Brendan Sorsby, where the Big 12 had
- 26:27Speaker 6: to kind of slap them back. I think you can
- 26:30Speaker 6: be emboldened by what local courts will say and certainly
- 26:35Speaker 6: the forum shopping that we're seeing there. comes into play,
- 26:39Speaker 6: I think, in a significant fashion as well.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Always go to the Sporting State website as well as
- 26:44Speaker 1: you watch us. A lot of great written content over
- 26:47Speaker 1: there and video clips as well. You can check out
- 26:50Speaker 1: all of our coverage on this. I saw on the
- 26:53Speaker 1: Sporting State social media platform, you sent out, Clay, five
- 26:57Speaker 1: teams to replace LSU if they got expelled. And listen,
- 27:01Speaker 1: I know you knew that they were never going to
- 27:04Speaker 1: get expelled. I'm interested on your number one choice, North Carolina.
- 27:07Speaker 1: I recognize your voice. Thank you so much. I appreciate you.
- 27:11Speaker 1: I love this. That is so staged.
- 27:14Speaker 6: Sorry, I was posing for a photo.
- 27:17Speaker 1: She recognized your voice. Clay pointed out at our kickoff
- 27:20Speaker 1: party that there was 500 people there and 499 people
- 27:23Speaker 1: loved Clay and then there was me. And he embarrassed
- 27:29Speaker 1: me in front of my friends.
- 27:31Speaker 6: No, I was just saying, like, everybody wanted pictures. Everybody
- 27:35Speaker 6: was super kind. That's my usual experience everywhere that I go.
- 27:39Speaker 6: I don't get much negativity. But, yeah, I'm standing in
- 27:42Speaker 6: the airport concourse here talking with you guys. So, you know,
- 27:46Speaker 6: she wanted to get a selfie. She's got great taste, clearly.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Yeah, 499 to 1. And the big joke in my
- 27:53Speaker 1: golf group, Clay, they were there, every one of them.
- 27:55Speaker 1: There were seven guys there. and me, we have two
- 27:58Speaker 1: foursomes that we play together every week multiple times. And
- 28:02Speaker 1: their big laughing joke on the golf course every time
- 28:05Speaker 1: now is, hey, how about us getting you to take
- 28:08Speaker 1: a picture of all seven of us and Clay Travis?
- 28:10Speaker 1: That big thing was, hey, Dunaway, take our picture of
- 28:14Speaker 1: me taking a picture of Clay and my seven friends.
- 28:17Speaker 1: It was fantastic. Loved it. Anyway, sport and state for
- 28:20Speaker 1: written content. North Carolina was your first choice if LSU
- 28:24Speaker 1: was kicked out of the league. If we don't pass
- 28:27Speaker 1: the Protect College Sports Act and we end up moving
- 28:30Speaker 1: to expanded conferences to get everything in line, how attractive
- 28:34Speaker 1: is North Carolina to the SEC?
- 28:37Speaker 6: I think beyond a shadow of a doubt, if the
- 28:40Speaker 6: SEC were going to expand, their top two targets would
- 28:44Speaker 6: be North Carolina and the University of Virginia. I think
- 28:49Speaker 6: the geographic cohesion makes a ton of sense. Those are
- 28:54Speaker 6: big markets. You know, North Carolina and Virginia are both
- 28:58Speaker 6: growing markets. I think one of the big stories of
- 29:01Speaker 6: the SEC writ large is just the South is white hot.
- 29:06Speaker 6: The number of people moving here, the universities are all
- 29:09Speaker 6: super popular. You know, I joke about this, but, you know,
- 29:12Speaker 6: you used to send your kids to Ole Miss if
- 29:15Speaker 6: they weren't good enough to get into a normal school, right?
- 29:18Speaker 6: Like your state school, maybe they'd committed a murder in
- 29:21Speaker 6: the past. Maybe they, you know, had gotten.
- 29:23Speaker 2: A 400 SAT.
- 29:25Speaker 6: I saw the other day where Ole Miss is now
- 29:27Speaker 6: rejecting half the people that try to apply to Ole Miss.
- 29:31Speaker 6: So it's not just the Vanderbilts of the world, which
- 29:33Speaker 6: have always been difficult to get into. uh and i
- 29:36Speaker 6: think vanderbilt by the way had a lower acceptance rate
- 29:39Speaker 6: this year than yale let me repeat that it was
- 29:42Speaker 6: harder to get into vanderbilt this past year than yale
- 29:45Speaker 6: or columbia um that's how white hot vanderbilt is but
- 29:49Speaker 6: the rising tide has lifted all boats north carolina obviously
- 29:52Speaker 6: the population has continued to skyrocket you're seeing the same
- 29:55Speaker 6: thing in virginia NC State, Virginia Tech, I think would
- 29:59Speaker 6: also be in the play. You know, Vandy certainly would
- 30:02Speaker 6: not mind Duke in those states. I think that is
- 30:05Speaker 6: where the SEC would go if you gave them the
- 30:08Speaker 6: opportunity to expand. That's the arena they would jump into.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Clay, on the field, big game coming up this weekend,
- 30:18Speaker 1: Ohio State and Texas. We were just talking about the
- 30:20Speaker 1: fact that Sark feels kind of where Ryan Day was
- 30:23Speaker 1: before he won the national championship. Do you view it
- 30:26Speaker 1: that way? Do you view Sark as kind of the
- 30:28Speaker 1: coach that if he can't find a way to win
- 30:31Speaker 1: the national championship, is going to hear some of the
- 30:33Speaker 1: same crap Ryan Day was hearing? He may already be
- 30:35Speaker 1: hearing it.
- 30:36Speaker 6: Yeah, look, I mean, and look, I think also Arch Manning.
- 30:39Speaker 6: I mean, remember last year they said they were articles
- 30:44Speaker 6: written saying Arch Manning was a bust after he didn't
- 30:47Speaker 6: play well on the road when they lose 12-7 or
- 30:50Speaker 6: whatever the heck the final score ended up being in
- 30:52Speaker 6: that game.
- 30:53Speaker 1: You know, when he didn't play well in that game.
- 30:55Speaker 1: People labeled him a bust.
- 30:56Speaker 6: And now I saw Hard Rock Bet has Arch as
- 30:59Speaker 6: the most likely player to be taken number one overall.
- 31:02Speaker 6: So it's a hell of a comeback. And obviously, I'm
- 31:05Speaker 6: joking about that. I mean, he was never a bust.
- 31:07Speaker 6: But I think it's not only Sark. I think people
- 31:09Speaker 6: will say, oh, here's Arch Manning. He can't win a
- 31:12Speaker 6: big game. They will continue to attack him. I think
- 31:15Speaker 6: the Texas program will be attacked. Hey, they're soft. They
- 31:18Speaker 6: can't get the big wins. They're spending more money than
- 31:20Speaker 6: anybody else. They've got elite talent. Um, all of those
- 31:23Speaker 6: things I think will, uh, will stack up against him.
- 31:26Speaker 6: Having said that, I think Ohio state's going to lose.
- 31:29Speaker 6: I think Texas is going to win. You guys know, um,
- 31:32Speaker 6: I just recorded my, you know, Clay Travis show this
- 31:35Speaker 6: morning before I came to the airport. I feel like
- 31:38Speaker 6: the talent that they put around arch has actually not
- 31:42Speaker 6: been discussed enough.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Hey, appreciate you. Oh, it's awesome to see you.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 31:47Speaker 6: It's good to see you.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Thank you. Uh, sorry.
- 31:49Speaker 6: Uh, uh, I think that if you actually look at
- 31:54Speaker 6: the talent, wide receiver in particular, you guys know Cam Coleman.
- 31:59Speaker 6: I think he's going to have a breakout game.
- 32:00Speaker 1: I think they're going to make.
- 32:01Speaker 6: Big-time plays offensively in a way they did not last year.
- 32:05Speaker 6: That home crowd will be absolutely raucous. I'm not sold, guys,
- 32:09Speaker 6: on Julian Sane. I know there's a lot of questions
- 32:11Speaker 6: about Arch still out there. I think Julian Sane is
- 32:16Speaker 6: not an elite, elite quarterback. We'll see if I'm right
- 32:20Speaker 6: and see how he plays this year. But but I
- 32:22Speaker 6: think Texas will win. I also think Oklahoma is going
- 32:25Speaker 6: to win. And I think the narrative coming out of
- 32:28Speaker 6: this weekend is going to be what's the WWE meme
- 32:31Speaker 6: where the guy comes out of the.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Out of the coffin.
- 32:34Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 32:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Undertaker.
- 32:36Speaker 6: So, yeah, the Undertaker when Ohio State and Michigan both
- 32:41Speaker 6: lose to SEC programs, Texas and Oklahoma after the SEC
- 32:45Speaker 6: also went 16 and 0 last week. I think the
- 32:49Speaker 6: multi-year narrative now of the SEC can't compete on the
- 32:52Speaker 6: same level in the NIL era and the conference is
- 32:55Speaker 6: down and all those things, I think will flip on
- 32:58Speaker 6: its head after what we see happen.
- 33:01Speaker 2: What's up, guys?
- 33:01Speaker 1: How are y'all? After we see what happens tomorrow. Before
- 33:05Speaker 1: you get on the flight, as a guy who has
- 33:07Speaker 1: never been– Out of Group 8, I'm always Group 8 boarding.
- 33:12Speaker 1: In Southwest? No, in Delta and other flights, I'm Group 8. Oh, no, no.
- 33:18Speaker 6: Southwest is a, you know, it was a long time A, B,
- 33:22Speaker 6: and C.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Now they've changed it. So I have.
- 33:25Speaker 6: 2.6 million Southwest points, which has got to be like,
- 33:30Speaker 6: I should get to, you know, most of the pilots,
- 33:33Speaker 6: you know, know me at this point, humbly.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Oh, humbly. Yeah, before Brown interrupted, I was going to say,
- 33:40Speaker 1: as a group eight guy who never gets to board
- 33:43Speaker 1: first and only gets offered Biscoff cookies, in first class,
- 33:48Speaker 1: what are your choices for snack? It's just Biscoff or
- 33:51Speaker 1: pretzels for me. What do you get?
- 33:53Speaker 6: No, Southwest doesn't have first class. So, I mean, you're
- 33:58Speaker 6: a common man. I sit at the front of the
- 34:01Speaker 6: plane so I can get off the quickest. But but
- 34:04Speaker 6: they have no special seating privileges on Southwest. So I'm
- 34:08Speaker 6: flying Southwest to Dallas and back. So, you know, I
- 34:12Speaker 6: live on the edges, man. It's either private jet travel
- 34:14Speaker 6: or it's Southwest.
- 34:15Speaker 1: I don't think in the middle, only the margins. This
- 34:19Speaker 1: sounds like his launch political campaign. I don't know. Not
- 34:22Speaker 1: first class. I fly with a common man. Do you
- 34:23Speaker 1: like Southwest better since they went to assigned seating? Do
- 34:26Speaker 1: you like it better?
- 34:27Speaker 6: Um, I always boarded fast because I've got so many, uh,
- 34:31Speaker 6: points and it actually is easier today. Uh, and sometimes
- 34:35Speaker 6: when I'm running late to get on an airplane, like
- 34:37Speaker 6: it is nicer. Like today, uh, I would prefer to
- 34:40Speaker 6: board at the absolute last minute on a flight because
- 34:44Speaker 6: I don't like to just sit around on the plane
- 34:46Speaker 6: and wait.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Uh, I never check bags.
- 34:48Speaker 6: So I'm like today I'm traveling with a backpack, you know,
- 34:50Speaker 6: down and back. So, um, you know, I'll sit down and, uh,
- 34:55Speaker 6: read and, you know, prep and everything else. But, uh,
- 34:58Speaker 6: you know, if I walk on three minutes before the
- 35:00Speaker 6: plane takes off, I'm happy.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:02Speaker 1: The problem is if you've got to carry on, people
- 35:04Speaker 1: are not courteous about the overhead bins. Like they just
- 35:07Speaker 1: put it in the first one. They don't put it
- 35:08Speaker 1: in the one over their seat. Well, that's certainly true.
- 35:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:12Speaker 1: They tell you to do that. Clay, have a safe flight, man.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Hey, appreciate y'all.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Have a good day.
- 35:17Speaker 2: I'll, uh, and keep up the good work.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Yep.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Thanks. We appreciate it. Clay. Clay and Buck, follow us

- 36:54Speaker 1: that's right. Our friend Clay Travis wants to remind you
- 36:58Speaker 1: about Clay Travis Law. And when we talk about Clay
- 37:01Speaker 1: Travis Law, The important thing to remember is that accidents
- 37:05Speaker 1: don't wait for a good time. They're accidents, right? It's
- 37:09Speaker 1: one bad moment, a wreck, a fall, a doctor not
- 37:11Speaker 1: paying enough attention. Suddenly, you're fighting an insurance company that
- 37:14Speaker 1: does this every single day. Well, that's why Clay started
- 37:17Speaker 1: Clay Travis Law. He built a firm around one idea.
- 37:20Speaker 1: People deserve someone willing to pay attention, ask the hard questions,
- 37:23Speaker 1: and push back when things do not add up. Clay's
- 37:27Speaker 1: an experienced trial attorney, but he's got experienced trial attorneys
- 37:31Speaker 1: as well that fight the corporations and insurers based in Nashville,
- 37:34Speaker 1: trusted across the country. They lead negotiations with honesty, determination,
- 37:39Speaker 1: and true Southern grit. car and truck wrecks, ride share accidents,
- 37:43Speaker 1: medical malpractice, premises liability, product liability. If you are wronged,
- 37:47Speaker 1: they want to hear about it. Go to ClayTravisLaw.com.
- 37:52Speaker 5: Or call 877-222-4444.
- 37:54Speaker 1: That's 877-222-4444. ClayTravisLaw.com. No cases too big or too small
- 38:02Speaker 1: for Clay Travis Law. One thing about Florida State, real quickly,
- 38:08Speaker 1: as they get ready to on a bye week before
- 38:11Speaker 1: they come to Alabama, everyone watched the other night waiting
- 38:15Speaker 1: for that game to roll and the delay on Monday night,
- 38:20Speaker 1: Labor Day night. The world was watching. And the two Taylors,
- 38:24Speaker 1: Taylor McGregor, Taylor Tannenbaum, friend of the show, did such
- 38:28Speaker 1: a wonderful job filling time. But an hour and 40
- 38:31Speaker 1: minutes of time fill that they had to do because
- 38:34Speaker 1: of the power outage, and they still played the game.
- 38:37Speaker 1: without all the lights and without some of the headsets.
- 38:41Speaker 1: I have talked to a Tuscaloosa city official. If something
- 38:46Speaker 1: like that were to happen in Tuscaloosa, there are several
- 38:50Speaker 1: plans that have been in place for years and years.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Not only generators, but different ways to tap into different
- 38:57Speaker 1: power grids. There are scenarios for several different things already
- 39:03Speaker 1: in place in Tuscaloosa. Again, one, two, three. There's four
- 39:08Speaker 1: or five different levels that can power the entire stadium
- 39:12Speaker 1: if they were to lose a transformer locally like what
- 39:16Speaker 1: happened in Tallahassee. So they already had this plan in place.
- 39:19Speaker 1: This would not have taken Alabama by surprise. I don't
- 39:22Speaker 1: know how many years back this plan goes, but multiple
- 39:27Speaker 1: people have told me that there are. there is a
- 39:30Speaker 1: level of different power options for Bryant-Denny Stadium. That includes
- 39:43Speaker 1: serious grids and things that they can tap into. Because,
- 39:47Speaker 1: as I pointed out on the broadcast on Tuesday, I mean,
- 39:51Speaker 1: in that situation, I don't know what Doak is now,
- 39:53Speaker 1: but it's 70,000. In Tuscaloosa, you're talking about a gathering
- 39:57Speaker 1: of 100,000 people. So if it's at night, you've got
- 39:58Speaker 1: 100,000 people. If you're in Neyland and it's at night,
- 40:01Speaker 1: you've got 100,000 people. At LSU, a night game the
- 40:03Speaker 1: other night, you've got 102,000 people. I mean, that's a
- 40:04Speaker 1: pretty serious safety situation if you can't. not just playing
- 40:19Speaker 1: the game, just a safety situation for humanity. So I
- 40:23Speaker 1: applaud all these cities, and I'm not saying Tuscaloosa is
- 40:27Speaker 1: any different than Auburn or Baton Rouge or Knoxville. I'm
- 40:30Speaker 1: sure they all got these massive contingency plans. So I
- 40:34Speaker 1: was just interested to see if they did or if
- 40:38Speaker 1: they were going to do it after what we saw
- 40:39Speaker 1: in Tallahassee and have been in place for years. Not
- 40:44Speaker 1: that something can't surprise them and make something happen, but
- 40:46Speaker 1: I was told, that what happened in Tallahassee would not
- 40:49Speaker 1: happen in Tuscaloosa.
- 40:52Speaker 6: Okay.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Well, that's good news. It's interesting that they had at
- 40:56Speaker 1: least thought through that. I mean, I guess it makes sense.
- 40:59Speaker 1: Not saying that there can't be like a 15-minute, 20-minute,
- 41:01Speaker 1: 30-minute delay until they get the backup plan go, but
- 41:04Speaker 1: there is a backup plan to where they would have
- 41:07Speaker 1: all lights when they kick that thing off and headsets
- 41:10Speaker 1: and everything.
- 41:10Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 41:11Speaker 1: School board.
- 41:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Everything needed. That elephant sound. Like, I don't know. I mean,
- 41:19Speaker 1: if you're Florida State or any program, there's got to be,
- 41:24Speaker 1: like you were just talking about, what's the bare minimum?
- 41:26Speaker 1: What do we have to have to play the game?
- 41:28Speaker 1: We've got to have a scoreboard. We've got to have
- 41:30Speaker 1: a clock, unless you're the Big Ten. Florida State had
- 41:32Speaker 1: security lights on.
- 41:33Speaker 2: You saw that.
- 41:33Speaker 1: So safety of the people were never in jeopardy. We
- 41:35Speaker 1: need stadium lights. We need headsets on the sidelines. Now,
- 41:38Speaker 1: if the ice cream is melting in the suites, they'll
- 41:41Speaker 1: live with it. But we've got to play the game.
- 41:43Speaker 1: I mean, they were having to talk about playing that
- 41:45Speaker 1: game on Tuesday.
- 41:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 41:46Speaker 1: I mean, you can't get to that point, right? Yeah,
- 41:48Speaker 1: I just thought that was interesting because we were wondering, man,
- 41:52Speaker 1: if you're watching that, wow, what if that happened to
- 41:54Speaker 1: us and we should go to work and do a
- 41:55Speaker 1: plan the next day? But apparently at a lot of places,
- 41:58Speaker 1: those plans have been in place for years and years
- 42:00Speaker 1: and years. Brent Venables is the head coach at Oklahoma.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Grade for Brent Venables in his time in Norman already.
- 42:08Speaker 1: What's his grade? It's complicated. There have been times it's
- 42:14Speaker 1: been a D. I mean, they went to the playoffs
- 42:18Speaker 1: last year, but I can't give that an A, can I?
- 42:20Speaker 1: They went to the playoffs and lost a home game
- 42:22Speaker 1: in the playoffs. I can't give that an A. They
- 42:23Speaker 1: didn't just lose a home game. They blew a 17-0 lead.
- 42:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:26Speaker 1: To a team, you know, they'd already beaten once, which
- 42:28Speaker 1: that really, on the road, I know they always say
- 42:31Speaker 1: it's hard to beat a team twice in one year. Yeah.
- 42:37Speaker 1: I would probably give Venables a B-. Yeah, that's exactly
- 42:41Speaker 1: where I went, B-. It's a little above average at
- 42:44Speaker 1: C +. Yeah, but Oklahoma's a proud program. I mean,
- 42:47Speaker 1: that is a program that expects to win championships. He
- 42:50Speaker 1: hasn't done that at Oklahoma. They haven't played for the SEC.
- 42:54Speaker 1: They haven't won the SEC. Texas has already at least
- 42:56Speaker 1: played for an SEC in their time in this league.
- 42:58Speaker 1: They love him. They love this guy at Oklahoma. Do
- 43:01Speaker 1: they really? Yeah, when I was out there in Norman,
- 43:03Speaker 1: the fans loved him. Now, that was pregame, and that
- 43:06Speaker 1: was them in the playoffs. But they like Brent Venables,
- 43:12Speaker 1: the person. They like Brent Venables. Good guy. Love cheering
- 43:16Speaker 1: for him. Just the opposite of what Mike Norvell is
- 43:19Speaker 1: experiencing right now at Florida State. They don't like him.
- 43:22Speaker 1: But in Oklahoma, they like him. If they ever decided
- 43:25Speaker 1: to fire him, it would be a tough fire. I
- 43:27Speaker 1: don't know if you read this real quick on Norvell,
- 43:30Speaker 1: but They announced, apparently, when the video was working, video
- 43:35Speaker 1: screen was working, at the Florida State game, SMU game,
- 43:38Speaker 1: that Florida State's band had been invited to the Rose Parade,
- 43:41Speaker 1: to march in the Rose Parade. They will be the
- 43:43Speaker 1: only thing at the Rose Bowl for Florida State. The
- 43:45Speaker 1: team certainly won't be there. But they had been invited
- 43:48Speaker 1: to be at the Rose Bowl Parade. And I think
- 43:50Speaker 1: it was a surprise announcement to either the fans of
- 43:53Speaker 1: the band or everyone. And Mike Norvell, which, again, interesting
- 43:57Speaker 1: choice here. Mike Norvell was... chosen to make the announcement
- 44:01Speaker 1: on video, the pre-taped video. And apparently as the video started,
- 44:04Speaker 1: the crowd started booing because Norvell was on it. They
- 44:06Speaker 1: couldn't hear it? I don't know if they could not
- 44:08Speaker 1: hear it, but the point was the crowd was booing
- 44:10Speaker 1: just seeing Norvell on the video screen. So that's how
- 44:13Speaker 1: toxic that has gotten. Oklahoma, Michigan. Brent Venables on how
- 44:18Speaker 1: physical would their defense and offense want to take to
- 44:21Speaker 1: this Big Ten game in the big house. Here is Venables.
- 44:25Speaker 4: You want to represent? A brand that is physical, that's tough,
- 44:31Speaker 4: that's consistent. We've got to tackle a lot better this
- 44:34Speaker 4: week than we did a week ago. These are real
- 44:38Speaker 4: dudes that will be carrying the football. However Michigan played
- 44:45Speaker 4: last week, we're going to bring out the best in Michigan,
- 44:47Speaker 4: I can promise you. It's a talented football team. that's
- 44:52Speaker 4: got tremendous pride and, again, a great staff that will
- 44:55Speaker 4: have these guys prepared. Their O-line coach is one of
- 44:57Speaker 4: the best in college football. And so it needs to
- 45:01Speaker 4: bring out the best in our guys. But, again, I
- 45:04Speaker 4: want that standard every single week. And you want it
- 45:08Speaker 4: to be second nature to how you play. This is
- 45:12Speaker 4: how we do it. This is the only formula for
- 45:15Speaker 4: how you have success and how you win.
- 45:18Speaker 1: He just got a contract extension. So this is not
- 45:21Speaker 1: a hot seat discussion for him because he won't be
- 45:22Speaker 1: on the hot seat. He just literally got a contract extension.
- 45:26Speaker 1: But as far as the fan approval you're talking about goes,
- 45:29Speaker 1: if they lose this game, now you're staring at two
- 45:31Speaker 1: of your next three are at Georgia and the annual
- 45:34Speaker 1: neutral site game against Texas. So in terms of fan approval,
- 45:38Speaker 1: if you lose this game Saturday, you've got some tough
- 45:42Speaker 1: games coming up and you're not too far removed from
- 45:44Speaker 1: a potential two and three start. And I do wonder,
- 45:47Speaker 1: how that fan approval would start to shift if they
- 45:49Speaker 1: do that. Also, if you lost this game, you're basically
- 45:54Speaker 1: losing to a team that Western Michigan beat last week.
- 45:56Speaker 1: That's right. That'll be the perception. You wouldn't be just
- 46:00Speaker 1: losing to Michigan. You would be losing to what people
- 46:02Speaker 1: think is a crippled Michigan team. It is a Michigan
- 46:05Speaker 1: team that is not your standard Bo Schembechler, Jim Harbaugh-era
- 46:09Speaker 1: Michigan Wolverines. Big picture, though. Do you buy into what
- 46:14Speaker 1: we've talked about for a couple of weeks now, that
- 46:17Speaker 1: this is one of those weekends SEC versus Big Ten.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Around the country for years and years because of the
- 46:25Speaker 1: SEC dominance, other fan bases have asked the question, why
- 46:29Speaker 1: in the heck do you guys in your stadiums chant SEC, SEC, SEC?
- 46:36Speaker 1: Why is that such a big deal to you guys?
- 46:39Speaker 1: So many other people would tell me, I'm a Michigan fan.
- 46:42Speaker 1: I hate everybody else in our conference. I'm an Ohio
- 46:45Speaker 1: State fan. I hate everybody else in our conference. I'm
- 46:47Speaker 1: a Clemson fan. I hate everybody else in our conference.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Why do you guys fly this SEC flag? And I
- 46:55Speaker 1: don't have an answer for that. For me, it's sort
- 46:58Speaker 1: of a regional pride thing. For me, it's always been
- 47:02Speaker 1: the national media always puts the South down in a
- 47:06Speaker 1: thousand different ways. And they used to do it in
- 47:08Speaker 1: college football. And College football is sort of the way
- 47:12Speaker 1: to smack Notre Dame or USC around a little bit.
- 47:15Speaker 1: So that's what it was for me. But I don't
- 47:17Speaker 1: know why.
- 47:18Speaker 2: It's that way.
- 47:18Speaker 1: But do you buy into the SEC flag waving on
- 47:23Speaker 1: a weekend like this when it's Texas hosting Ohio State, Oklahoma,
- 47:28Speaker 1: even down to Mississippi State at Minnesota? That's what I
- 47:31Speaker 1: was going to ask you. Arizona State's at Texas A & M.
- 47:33Speaker 1: I know Texas fans will be pulling for Arizona State.
- 47:35Speaker 1: Do you think the rest of the conference teams are
- 47:38Speaker 1: pulling for Arizona State?
- 47:40Speaker 6: I don't.
- 47:41Speaker 1: I think they watch that game and they want A &
- 47:42Speaker 1: M to win it. Yeah, obviously if it's your rival. Yeah,
- 47:45Speaker 1: I mean, because Texas... I'm not saying Alabama fans were
- 47:48Speaker 1: cheering for Auburn. No, Alabama fans were flat out cheering
- 47:50Speaker 1: for Baylor. I know that to be factual. But... But
- 47:53Speaker 1: I think everyone else in the league, maybe Georgia fans too,
- 47:56Speaker 1: but most of the rest of the conference is like, yeah,
- 47:57Speaker 1: I want to see Auburn. Other than your rivals, I
- 47:59Speaker 1: think it makes your conference look better.
- 48:00Speaker 5: I agree.
- 48:01Speaker 1: It makes your conference stronger. You want your conference to
- 48:03Speaker 1: be viewed as the best conference in football because you
- 48:05Speaker 1: want the respect you deserve for winning that conference or
- 48:07Speaker 1: performing well in that conference. But the argument always is,
- 48:10Speaker 1: so that only helps in this case, if you're an
- 48:12Speaker 1: Alabama fan, this only helps Oklahoma recruiting. They make still
- 48:16Speaker 1: a player. If you're Tennessee, Oklahoma, if they're good, that, that,
- 48:20Speaker 1: that makes them more viable on the recruiting trail that
- 48:22Speaker 1: hurts us in the long run in the portal koenig's
- 48:25Speaker 1: tiger says the sec chan is not for me i
- 48:28Speaker 1: dgas i don't give a piss about nothing but no
- 48:32Speaker 1: uh about any sec team except auburn rtd4 i personally
- 48:36Speaker 1: don't give a piss he uses it about anybody else
- 48:39Speaker 1: in the sec other than bama he's very close to
- 48:41Speaker 1: willie um I mean, a lot of people in the
- 48:46Speaker 1: chat like, hang on, let me dig back through. Ambler47,
- 48:50Speaker 1: people hate the SEC because they hate the South. And
- 48:52Speaker 1: he says that's why he thinks a lot of people
- 48:54Speaker 1: unify behind that. Yeah, that's where I come from because
- 48:58Speaker 1: I'm older, and it used to be before we had
- 49:01Speaker 1: the ESPN-ABC deal, it always felt like it was the
- 49:05Speaker 1: Northern media against the South.
- 49:08Speaker 3: I felt that after going out to cover the Rose
- 49:10Speaker 3: Bowl with the Indiana media.
- 49:11Speaker 1: Yeah. It was more about the South rather than playing
- 49:15Speaker 1: the SEC.
- 49:16Speaker 3: I lived in the Midwest for a couple years, too,
- 49:17Speaker 3: and there's a lot of preconceived notions. that still exist
- 49:20Speaker 3: up in those parts of the country. I married a
- 49:23Speaker 3: girl from New Jersey. In the Northeast and the Midwest,
- 49:26Speaker 3: those still exist thoughts about the South.
- 49:31Speaker 1: The three of us, we were lucky enough to work
- 49:33Speaker 1: in local TV for a period of time. Forrester and Brooks,
- 49:37Speaker 1: you guys would agree that When people would come from
- 49:39Speaker 1: other markets their first time to Alabama, the first thing
- 49:43Speaker 1: they would always say to me, and now our TV
- 49:45Speaker 1: station where I originally worked at NBC 13 was on
- 49:48Speaker 1: Red Mountain overlooking the skyline. They would come in, they
- 49:51Speaker 1: were like, I just pictured Alabama being flat. Oh, yeah.
- 49:56Speaker 1: I thought it was plantation and farmland. That's the way
- 50:00Speaker 1: it's always in the movies. I didn't know you guys
- 50:01Speaker 1: had hills and mountains. People are stunned the fact that
- 50:04Speaker 1: Birmingham actually has something we would call a mountain. They
- 50:07Speaker 1: think it's farmland. But it's literally the start of the Appalachians. Yeah,
- 50:10Speaker 1: the foothills, if you will. The foothills, if you will.
- 50:13Speaker 1: So they were always surprised that beautiful landscape here. It's
- 50:17Speaker 1: rolling hills. It's not the flat farmlands I used to
- 50:20Speaker 1: see in in the movies. And I said, we're, we're
- 50:22Speaker 1: a long way from gone with the wind.
- 50:24Speaker 3: My friend, I had kind of backed off the, the
- 50:27Speaker 3: rooting conference wide deal. Um, and then after the Rose
- 50:31Speaker 3: bowl and seeing this victory lap, the big 10 has
- 50:34Speaker 3: taken the last years.
- 50:35Speaker 2: I'm back in.
- 50:37Speaker 1: And that was my point of starting as Brooks and
- 50:38Speaker 1: the big 10 has done nothing but big 10, big 10.
- 50:42Speaker 1: They don't chant it.
- 50:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Cause it doesn't work. They've done this.
- 50:45Speaker 2: It wouldn't work.
- 50:47Speaker 1: They've done this now for though, for, for, For a
- 50:50Speaker 1: couple of years now, look what we've done, and it's
- 50:52Speaker 1: not the SEC anymore. It's the Big Ten. It's not
- 50:53Speaker 1: the SEC anymore. It's the Big Ten. And I think
- 50:56Speaker 1: that's why this weekend is the start of several weekends.
- 50:59Speaker 1: But this is a big one this weekend where I'm
- 51:02Speaker 1: a lot of SEC, SEC this weekend. I think outside,
- 51:04Speaker 1: I mean, Texas-Ohio State is going to be the most
- 51:06Speaker 1: watched game of the entire weekend. I get that. But
- 51:10Speaker 1: as far as most popular teams in the Southeastern Conference
- 51:12Speaker 1: this year, I think this week, I think it'll be State.
- 51:15Speaker 1: I think Ole Miss fans will pull for Minnesota. I
- 51:17Speaker 1: think everybody else in the conference would love to see
- 51:19Speaker 1: State go win a conference game. Or go win a
- 51:21Speaker 1: non-conference game on the road at a Big Ten school.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Because that's one thing we say a lot of times.
- 51:26Speaker 1: I mean, if Mississippi State was in the ACC, where
- 51:28Speaker 1: would they finish? That's right. If Mississippi State was in
- 51:30Speaker 1: the Big Ten, where would they finish? And if you
- 51:31Speaker 1: can go win at Minnesota, you would say, well, they're
- 51:34Speaker 1: a mid-tier Big Ten team right there. Just winning at Minnesota. Yeah,
- 51:37Speaker 1: I think so too. A couple of those games this weekend.
- 51:40Speaker 1: You don't want to be Tennessee and go to Georgia
- 51:43Speaker 1: Tech and lose like Forrester has projected in the upset alert.
- 51:47Speaker 1: You don't want to be Missouri and go on the
- 51:48Speaker 1: road to Kansas to lose to a Midland Big 12
- 51:51Speaker 1: team on Friday night, Maine Fox. You've got some of
- 51:54Speaker 1: those wave, fly the SEC banner games this weekend, including
- 52:00Speaker 1: Arkansas and Utah. We'll talk a little bit about that
- 52:02Speaker 1: coming up in the believer, non-believer segment that we'll do.
- 52:06Speaker 1: That's part of our next two hours. We'll turn Sport
- 52:09Speaker 1: and State over to Clay and Buck and everyone else
- 52:12Speaker 1: throughout the rest of the afternoon. We'll continue on our
- 52:15Speaker 1: Next Round Live platform. Like and subscribe here in just
- 52:18Speaker 1: a minute, but always on social media, both here at
- 52:21Speaker 1: Next Round Live and Sport and State. Until next time,
- 52:24Speaker 1: you guys have a great day.
