- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at
- 0:20fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for listening.
- 0:26As you're seated, I want to invite you to turn in your
- 0:29Bibles if you have them with you.
- 0:32Or you feel free to pull out the one in front of you in the Pew,
- 0:36or just turn your attention to the screen.
- 0:38Or turn it to Genesis Chapter 9. Nope.
- 0:46Genesis Chapter 11. close. Yeah.
- 0:51Beginning in verse one on this Pentecost Sunday.
- 0:57So did you hear the word of God to us today?
- 1:03Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
- 1:08As people moved eastward, they found a plane in Shinar and
- 1:12settled there. They said to each other, come,
- 1:15let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly.
- 1:19They used brick instead of stone and tar for mortar.
- 1:22Then they said, come, let us build ourselves a city with a
- 1:27tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a
- 1:31name for ourselves, otherwise we will be scattered across the
- 1:35face of the whole earth. But the Lord came down to see
- 1:39the city and the tower the people were building.
- 1:42The Lord said if as one people speaking the same language,
- 1:47they've begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be
- 1:54impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse
- 1:58their language so they will not understand each other.
- 2:03So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and
- 2:06they stopped building the city. That is why it is called Babel,
- 2:12because they're the Lord, confused the language of the
- 2:16whole world. From there the Lord scattered
- 2:18them over the face of the whole earth.
- 2:23This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 2:27Thanks be to God. Amen.
- 2:31This morning Scripture is about the Tower of Babel, and you may
- 2:36be thinking to yourself that it's an odd selection for
- 2:39Pentecost Sunday. But there are some beautiful
- 2:43parallels to these stories, even just the the mention of when God
- 2:51says he's going to confuse them, he says, let us confuse them.
- 2:55We already have the Trinity involved in the process, the
- 2:59three persons, but then it says the Lord does it, the three in
- 3:03one. But in Genesis 11, we see the
- 3:06pride of the people leading them to build a legacy for themselves
- 3:12so that they would be known throughout the world.
- 3:16What does God do? He confuses them so they won't
- 3:20understand each other's languages.
- 3:22He spreads them throughout the world and stops them from
- 3:26building the tower to make a name for themselves.
- 3:30Now if we Fast forward thousands of years to Pentecost, Jesus has
- 3:35already ascended into heaven and left his disciples behind on
- 3:39earth. And this is where we land in
- 3:42Acts chapter 2 where it says on the day of Pentecost came.
- 3:49They were all together in one place.
- 3:51Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came
- 3:54from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
- 3:58They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated
- 4:02and came to rest on each of them.
- 4:04All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak
- 4:08in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
- 4:11Now there were staying in Jerusalem, God fearing Jews from
- 4:15every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a
- 4:19crowd came together in bewilderment because each one
- 4:22heard their own language being spoken.
- 4:26Utterly amazed, they asked, Aren't all these who are
- 4:29speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us
- 4:33hears them and our native language?
- 4:35And then there's a long list of places that I will not
- 4:39mispronounce this morning. And at the end of verse 11, it
- 4:43says we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own
- 4:47tongues. Amazed and perplexed, they asked
- 4:50one another, what does this mean?
- 4:55People from all over the world gathered.
- 4:58The languages that divide them are spoken to unite them.
- 5:04They are confused, but not about what is said, but what this
- 5:08means for them. Once divided by their pride,
- 5:13they are united under the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 5:17Once again they are scattered to the ends of the earth, but this
- 5:21time it isn't a punishment. This time it is to share the
- 5:25unifying gospel of Jesus Christ, Son of God, born, crucified and
- 5:32risen from the dead. Amen.
- 5:34Amen. And so before we really dig in
- 5:37here, I'd like to open us in a little prayer.
- 5:41Would you join me? Come, Holy Spirit, come.
- 5:50Would you fill this space? Would you fill my heart and my
- 5:58mouth? And would you soften our hearts
- 6:03for whatever you want to speak to us this morning?
- 6:07That I would be put aside and anything of me would be
- 6:12forgotten. But what you speak would rest in
- 6:17their hearts and their minds, pushing them closer to you.
- 6:21In Jesus name, Amen. Amen.
- 6:26Generations have been inspired by one man, a space Ranger from
- 6:34the Intergalactic Alliance and the Space Ranger corpse
- 6:38stationed in the Gamma Quadrant. That man is Buzz Lightyear.
- 6:44He's inspired many, even my son Theo, to try and fly.
- 6:50Can play the clip. Oh, you can't hear him?
- 7:00Do one more time. Oh, my little boy.
- 7:11So if you haven't seen Toy Story or you don't think that's cute,
- 7:15we have exits available for you throughout the sanctuary.
- 7:22The movie Toy Story came out 30 years ago.
- 7:26Don't we all feel younger now? And there is a scene where the T
- 7:32Rexer asks what a space Ranger can do as a Buzz Lightyear
- 7:38replies with pure confidence. Can fight.
- 7:41I have a laser that I can shoot and I can fly.
- 7:44Woody the cowboy doesn't believe it and asks him to prove it.
- 7:49And the famous line as he approaches the edge of the bed
- 7:53to Infinity and beyond. And he puts his arms out and he
- 7:56dives off the bed. And he as he jumps, he hits a
- 8:00ball, he bounces, he lands on the hot wheel track.
- 8:03He does the loop de loop, floats up off the ramp, gets
- 8:07accidentally stuck to the ceiling fan and spins around a
- 8:10whole bunch, launches off of that and lands on the bed.
- 8:14And everyone is so impressed by the feat that they just
- 8:18witnessed, except for Woody, who knew what really happened that
- 8:23he wasn't flying. But as Woody calls it, Buzz fell
- 8:26with style, right? And just like Theo shouting to
- 8:31Infinity and beyond before sliding, he didn't really fly as
- 8:37he was maybe hoping or imagining that he was.
- 8:41So Pastor Jeremy, I thought we were going to talk about
- 8:43Pentecost, not a fictional character who's convinced that
- 8:47he's flying when he's not really flying.
- 8:49Fairpoint. We celebrate Pentecost because
- 8:53God sent the Holy Spirit for all people just as Jesus promised in
- 8:59John 1415 through 17 When He says, if you love me, keep my
- 9:05commands and I will ask the Father and he will give you
- 9:09another advocate to help you and be with you forever.
- 9:13The Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him
- 9:17because it neither sees Him nor knows him.
- 9:20But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.
- 9:27God makes it possible for the Holy Spirit to be with us and in
- 9:31US. Well, what should that look
- 9:34like? What can someone that's been
- 9:36filled with the Holy Spirit, one of the three persons of God, do?
- 9:42Well, we should be able to bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit,
- 9:47which are anybody want to sing it?
- 9:56I don't know that rendition, but it does include Lovejoy, peace,
- 10:00patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and
- 10:05self-control. And that's what we advertise,
- 10:08that we believe. But do our actions match our
- 10:11claims? Sometimes we like to talk about
- 10:17the parts of the fruit of the Spirit.
- 10:20You know, I love. I love my family and friends,
- 10:24and I'm working on loving those in traffic.
- 10:27Joy. When things are going my way.
- 10:30I got it. And when I'm singing, there's
- 10:32joy down in my heart. It sounds like it.
- 10:35Patience. I don't have time for that.
- 10:37And then we go 1 by 1 and we start working back and thinking
- 10:42of all the parts that we need to work on.
- 10:46But the Greek word used here for fruit is in the singular tense,
- 10:50not the plural. It's not individual fruits of
- 10:53the Spirit, but when you bear the fruit of the Spirit, you are
- 10:56bearing it all. And so when we try to live this
- 11:02way by our own power, we might even be praised inside the
- 11:07church or outside of the church because they see us falling with
- 11:11style. I mean, he's going up and down
- 11:13and it's kind of like flying at certain parts, but we're not
- 11:17actually doing what's advertised right.
- 11:24I was thinking really dumb thing that came to me in Sunday school
- 11:27was if we were to put signs on the outside of the church that
- 11:31we had bananas, just infinite bananas.
- 11:34If you want bananas, come to the church and we have bananas for
- 11:37you. And people start pouring in for
- 11:39bananas and they're like, I'll take one, please.
- 11:41And and you say you have it and we give them a sliver of a
- 11:45banana peel and it's not even fresh.
- 11:48It's a blackened sliver of a banana peel.
- 11:50And it's like, well, I, I have part of it and I'm working on
- 11:53the rest, right? Well then why would they believe
- 11:56that we really have it? And why would we advertise that
- 12:00we have it? If we are empowered by God, then
- 12:05we should have greater love than the hippies, more peace than the
- 12:11Buddhist monks, better patience than Rihanna fans or millennials
- 12:16and Disney World lines, more self-control than Mark Wahlberg
- 12:21who wakes up at 3:00 AM to work out every day.
- 12:24Right, because if we don't, we'll end up like Buzz, who
- 12:30eventually realizes he can't do all the things he believed and
- 12:34even convinced others that he could do.
- 12:37Once he realizes this, he starts to question his entire back
- 12:42story of all that he knew of being a space Ranger saving the
- 12:46Galaxy from the evil Emperor's Zorg.
- 12:49And if that's not true and he's just a toy, then what can he
- 12:56really do? Why would the world believe the
- 13:00gospel if those that live out the promises don't look like
- 13:05what was promised? What a tall order.
- 13:10And I can try my best to do better in all of these areas
- 13:15because the Lord convicted me in this service and I don't want to
- 13:20misrepresent God out in the world.
- 13:23I need to do this. And we go down a checklist of
- 13:26OK, what parts of the fruit am I missing and I need to do better
- 13:29in and it becomes me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me.
- 13:34And instead of putting our arms out and saying to Infinity and
- 13:37beyond, we put our arms out and we start flapping really hard
- 13:41while we say to Infinity and beyond, which will lead to the
- 13:45same exact results. And ironically, the last part of
- 13:52the fruit of the Spirit that is described is self-control.
- 13:57And yet we try and do that part on our own as well instead of
- 14:01leaning on the Holy Spirit for a holy level of self-control.
- 14:06And so we may try to fly with more style and may even have
- 14:11some people convinced inside the church and outside of the
- 14:14church. But that doesn't mean that we
- 14:16can fly. Just the other week I was in
- 14:20Ireland and we had the privilege of going to the cliffs of Moore,
- 14:24some famous beautiful cliffs on the Oceanside.
- 14:27And what I wasn't expecting is how windy it was Oh my Lanta
- 14:32people were getting according to the lore, if you listen to the
- 14:36conversations happening as you go up and down the path that
- 14:39people were picked up and thrown by the wind.
- 14:42And we didn't see anyone picked up, but we did see people
- 14:45knocked over. And I helped 1 old lady get back
- 14:49up and her get her glasses off the ground.
- 14:51And it was so windy when she put her glasses back on, as soon as
- 14:54she let go, they flew right back off of her face.
- 14:57You can see the intensity in the grass and all around you.
- 15:01And I thought what an incredible opportunity I have to fly.
- 15:06And so I opened up my jacket and I climbed on this little dirt
- 15:11hill, got my hands in my pockets.
- 15:15I was ready to go. Now, as you may be thinking to
- 15:20yourself, the wind had a lot of work to do to keep me up in the
- 15:24air. OK, I did not think that me
- 15:28jumping by myself was going to have any circumstances beside a
- 15:33twisted ankle at the end of this story, but I had faith that
- 15:38there might be a chance that the wind could carry me better than
- 15:43I could ever do on my own. And so if you're unaware, in the
- 15:49Hebrew and in the Greek, the word Spirit is also translated
- 15:53as wind. And we see through the Old
- 15:56Testament and on Pentecost, God moving as wind, also God showing
- 16:01himself and displaying himself as fire.
- 16:05But this concept of the wind moving as we just sang about,
- 16:11it's having the faith that where we fall, he'll be able to lift
- 16:17us up, right? And so we need to surrender
- 16:20ourselves. Hands in pockets, full
- 16:23surrender. Can't even catch yourself from
- 16:26falling on the ground because of the hands in the pockets, right?
- 16:29Full surrender to where the wind, where the Spirit wants to
- 16:33take us individually and as the church.
- 16:39And it's no longer falling with style, but actually flying.
- 16:47Now people may think we're crazy, like many onlookers.
- 16:50As I was jumping off steps and my sunglasses flew off and hit
- 16:55someone in the head and then my water bottle fell out.
- 16:58And it was a work in progress trying to figure out how to
- 17:01navigate with the wind. But that's not new news.
- 17:07Even as we navigate with the Holy Spirit that we may stumble
- 17:10as we try to surrender ourselves, trying to figure out
- 17:13how to detect where He's moving, when He's moving, and how to get
- 17:17on board with what God is doing today in and through his people.
- 17:22But at the end of the Pentecost story in Acts 2, verse 13, it
- 17:27says that people were so confused as to what was
- 17:29happening that some thought the apostles might be drunk.
- 17:33That reminds me, I forgot, I did leave questionnaires in the
- 17:36bulletins, right? Do we have them?
- 17:38Incredible. And so you can be filling those
- 17:40out. One of those questions is, are
- 17:42you currently drunk? And if you don't want to be
- 17:46honest, it's OK. Surely there must be something
- 17:50else going on here because we don't have a framework to see
- 17:55what this new experience is like in Pentecost.
- 17:58Right? All these onlookers, and that
- 18:02may happen as you surrender yourself to bear the fruit of
- 18:05the Spirit. Your holy joy and peace may be
- 18:09viewed as denial by people in the world of the circumstances
- 18:14around you. And sometimes it can be.
- 18:16Sometimes Christians in the church feel like we need to deny
- 18:20the gravity of the bad situations around us so that it
- 18:24looks like we're falling with style, so that it looks like we
- 18:26have that joy coming from the Lord.
- 18:29Looks like we have that peace, but when we are fully
- 18:32surrendered and we fully embrace what the Lord has for us, it's
- 18:37no longer denial. It's stemming from Him and His
- 18:40Spirit inside of us. And so are we OK with the world
- 18:44not understanding what God is doing in our lives, even as we
- 18:49discover ourselves what that looks like?
- 18:52Are we bold enough to share the reason why we aren't drunk?
- 18:56Right. And when we talk about
- 18:58drunkenness and the Spirit, you may think of Ephesians 518 and
- 19:03be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with
- 19:08the Spirit. What changes when you're drunk?
- 19:15Fine. What changes when other people
- 19:17are drunk? Their reactions, vision, speech,
- 19:26right, how they think, how they act, how they speak.
- 19:30Everything is affected by being drunk.
- 19:34And so instead of that, we are then called to be filled by the
- 19:38Spirit, which, when we are filled and we surrender
- 19:41ourselves to Him, changes everything.
- 19:46How we think, how we speak, how we act.
- 19:50It is no longer of ourselves, but us being empowered by the
- 19:56Holy Spirit. Would you pray with me, Lord?
- 20:05We want to put aside all of the times that we tried to fly with
- 20:14style, flapping our wings as hard as we could instead of
- 20:21surrendering ourselves. To you and entrusting you and
- 20:25what you're capable of doing. Not the weight we bring that
- 20:30makes it really difficult for you to lift us up.
- 20:34Not where we fall short, but where your power is far
- 20:38mightier. That Your Son tells us that it
- 20:43is better that He is no longer with us in the flesh so that we
- 20:47would receive the Holy Spirit. Would we believe the words of
- 20:52our Lord and Savior? Would we live into the truth
- 20:56that You are with us today? That you can fill us, Lord?
- 21:00That You can bear a holy fruit that is unattainable on our own
- 21:04efforts as we surrender ourselves to You?
- 21:08Lord, would those see the holy difference?
- 21:12Not that we would be glorified. Not that they would applaud our
- 21:18holy love and peace and joy and goodness and kindness, Lord, but
- 21:24that we would be able to point them towards You.
- 21:26That they would be able to receive those same things in a
- 21:30world that desperately needs all of it.
- 21:34We ask that You would build our faith that You would stir in us
- 21:39a yearning for You, not for what we can gain or achieve or the
- 21:48beautiful views from being stuck to a ceiling fan, but we could
- 21:52truly accomplish things far greater than we could ever ask
- 21:58or imagine for your name and your renown.
- 22:04We thank you so much for this opportunity to join you in the
- 22:07work that You're doing and ask that You would give us the
- 22:11tools, that you would give us Your spirit, that You would give
- 22:16us confidence, that You would give us testimonies that
- 22:19embolden our faith Lord. That we would see Your spirit
- 22:22move amongst your people as You have promised so that it's no
- 22:26longer false advertising. But we can boldly and
- 22:31confidently declare that You are all that You have said that You
- 22:36are from the beginning when You created, all the way to now and
- 22:45forevermore in Jesus name, Amen.
