- 0:45episode, and if you loved this episode, please
- 0:47leave me a review. Okay, so it's time for our
- 0:51weekly updates. This week, I'm actually getting
- 0:56ready to go to Iceland So this is one of those
- 0:58pre -recorded episodes that if you listen to
- 1:01this past episode episode 8 on prayer at the
- 1:05very very end I Let y 'all know that this episode
- 1:09in the next have been pre -recorded So I'm sorry
- 1:13for anything that maybe there's a glitch in the
- 1:16system or a glitch in the edit Whatever because
- 1:20I'm not in control at the moment of that and
- 1:22I'm choosing to surrender even though it's very
- 1:25hard for me to Anyways, so I'll be getting on
- 1:28a flight Actually, no this time next week when
- 1:32you're listening, I'll be driving around Iceland.
- 1:34I don't even know where I'll be at this point
- 1:35I should probably look up my itinerary anyways
- 1:38Yeah, so I'll be in Iceland. Okay, what's in
- 1:42what is in is let's see Sunset swims we went
- 1:48on a sunset swim last week, and it was beautiful
- 1:52so very much loving that and what is out is Honestly,
- 1:58what's out is my AC my AC has been out for about
- 2:01a week And it has been one of the hottest last
- 2:04like past weeks here in North Carolina and everyone
- 2:06keeps telling me like oh my gosh It's so hot
- 2:08outside. Can you believe how hot it is? How hot
- 2:10it is outside. Yes, I can believe it because
- 2:13I haven't had a C in my car. Why? Well, I thought
- 2:17it's because I put gas in it and that's why it's
- 2:19not there's not but someone informed me that
- 2:22that has zero connection Even though I definitely
- 2:25feel like it does with what has happened in the
- 2:27past Anyways, that's a whole rant. I could go
- 2:30on that. I'm not going to go on So yeah, that's
- 2:33what out is a C and I'm getting it fixed this
- 2:35week. Praise Jesus Okay, well that's all I have,
- 2:39so let's go ahead and dive in into today's episode.
- 2:48Okay bestie, I'm speaking on this as I'm currently
- 2:52working on it myself. One thing about me is I
- 2:55know things. Always have, probably always will.
- 2:58What do I mean by that? Oh well, since you asked.
- 3:02The type of things I know are like how long your
- 3:05relationship will last until you break up, almost
- 3:08to the day sometimes, the outcome of your decisions,
- 3:12and I can read people like no one's business,
- 3:15so when I say I don't trust someone or I get
- 3:17a weird vibe from them, best believe I'm onto
- 3:20something. It might come out by the end of the
- 3:23party or years later, but trust it will show
- 3:26itself. I don't always trust myself either though,
- 3:29because the thing about me, because there's many
- 3:32things about me if you haven't noticed, is I'll
- 3:35always give others the benefit of the doubt.
- 3:37My therapist says I need to trust myself more,
- 3:40that my gut instinct is cued in. I don't know
- 3:42about you, but I hate judging people on first
- 3:44impressions. When they say something off or give
- 3:47a look that sounds the quiet alarm bell in my
- 3:49head, we all have lies we speak to ourselves.
- 3:52One of mine is that I'm a mean girl and too judgy.
- 3:54So when the alarm bell goes off, I silence it.
- 3:57really quick because of those lies and it never
- 3:59works out in my favor. I'm sure we all have done
- 4:02this at some point and have regretted it. Let's
- 4:05talk about what gut instinct is. Psychologists
- 4:08would say gut instinct and intuition are the
- 4:10same thing and I'd be inclined to agree, but
- 4:13where I disagree is this. They say intuition
- 4:16is your brain unconsciously connecting patterns
- 4:18and matching them to past experiences to the
- 4:21current element you are experiencing. Your brain
- 4:24is always looking to make sense of things and
- 4:26predict what will happen. Now, I believe that
- 4:29this is mostly true for most people, but here's
- 4:32where my opinion and view shifts. As believers,
- 4:35we have the spirit in us, and that means what
- 4:37comes along with it is the spirit of discernment.
- 4:40There are three different concepts in the Bible
- 4:42about the word discernment. One is in Acts 17
- 4:45verse 11, and we're going to read that. Okay,
- 4:49verse 11 says, Now these Jews were more noble
- 4:52than those in Thessalonica. They received the
- 4:55word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures
- 4:58daily to see if these things were so. This type
- 5:01of discernment means to carefully investigate
- 5:04and examine matters, to search for truths and
- 5:06understanding on a deeper level. Now, the second
- 5:09type of discernment is in Matthew 7 verses 1
- 5:11and 2. Ok, first one. For with the judgment you
- 5:18pronounce, you will be judged, and the measure
- 5:21you use it will be the measure to you." This
- 5:24one focuses more about condemning others. That's
- 5:26the type of discernment based on human opinion
- 5:29and judgment that condemns others unfairly, when
- 5:31we are actually called to see situations and
- 5:34people through the lens of the Holy Spirit with
- 5:35grace and truth. And the third one is to test
- 5:38and evaluate whether something is true. It's
- 5:41going to be in 1 Thessalonians 5 verse 21. And
- 5:45one's really wise. Actually, not even wild but
- 5:48what's funny that it's in first Thessalonians
- 5:51as we've been reading that in my small group
- 5:53on Tuesday nights and we're in chapter four and
- 5:56First off I always struggle to find Thessalonians.
- 5:59I'm not sure why and secondly in chapter four.
- 6:02There's a verse that Quite literally says to
- 6:05mind your own business and I don't know why that
- 6:08just cracks me up So anyways, um, what is a podcast
- 6:13with me if I don't go on a random ramble about
- 6:15something else? Alright, so verse Thessalonians
- 6:18chapter 5 verse 21. Okay, it says, but to test
- 6:23everything, hold fast what is good. Wow, simple
- 6:26and to the point, right? Now, this was talking
- 6:29about prophecies, but like a hundred percent
- 6:32of the Bible, we can apply it to all aspects
- 6:35of our lives as well. The three main words that
- 6:37stood out to me were examine, judge, and evaluate.
- 6:40We can apply these three different concepts to
- 6:42any situation in life. People, words, actions.
- 6:46What we see, feel, or hear. Our gut instinct
- 6:49is discernment, and discernment is wisdom, gifted
- 6:52to us by Jesus. So no, our gut instinct isn't
- 6:55always our brain unconsciously connecting past
- 6:58patterns to present moments to predict what will
- 7:00happen. It's also our spirit using what was gifted
- 7:04to us to protect us from what could be. As I'm
- 7:07saying this, I'm realizing what a disservice
- 7:09I'm doing not only to myself by not honoring
- 7:11the Lord by using the gift He gave us, but I'm
- 7:15doing him a disservice as well. Wow. See, I told
- 7:18you I'm still working on this. So, why am I talking
- 7:22about this? Well, this is one of those late night
- 7:25car combos you'd have with your bestie. This
- 7:27is a safe space for me to share my tea and how
- 7:30truly imperfect I am. So buckle up, bestie. First,
- 7:33I know I cannot be the only one. It's not possible.
- 7:37No human experience is a unique experience to
- 7:40just you or me. So let's talk about it. You're
- 7:43at a party. church small group or walking across
- 7:46the street and I'm sure alarm bells have gone
- 7:48off in your head at least once in your life and
- 7:50you dismissed it because you didn't want to be
- 7:52the judgy friend you felt guilt for deciding
- 7:54right off the bat you didn't like someone or
- 7:57you didn't want to come across rude and then
- 7:59whatever was bothering you eventually comes out
- 8:01to light or plays out and you either say see
- 8:04I wanted to say something about them not sitting
- 8:07right with me and this is why or think to yourself
- 8:11If I'd listened to my instinct, I could have
- 8:13avoided this. You don't want to not like the
- 8:15friend of your friend because it comes off as
- 8:17you being insecure or not wanting to share. You
- 8:20don't want to judge the girl at small group even
- 8:22though she seems judgy or saying insanely weird
- 8:25things because it's a church group and we aren't
- 8:27supposed to judge others. You don't want to assume
- 8:30the person that happens to be staying anywhere
- 8:31from 30 to 10 feet behind you at all times in
- 8:34the grocery store aisle to aisle is following
- 8:36you even though they have yet to put anything
- 8:39in their cart because what on the off chance
- 8:41they aren't and are just an indecisive shopper
- 8:44who happens to be a man? What if his feelings
- 8:46get hurt or they feel insecure because you were
- 8:48wrong about being followed? How do I know you've
- 8:51had these thoughts or feelings? Because babe,
- 8:53I do. All you know is your gut instinct is telling
- 8:56you something, but you shut it down for some
- 8:58reason or another and we regret it. I'm not sure
- 9:01if there has ever been a time we decided to not
- 9:03listen to our instincts and were happy about
- 9:05it. If there was, I wouldn't be here having this
- 9:08talk now. Okay, story time. There was a girl
- 9:11I met when I first moved to Wilmington. We hung
- 9:13out one time and she and I just clicked, but
- 9:16something just fell a little off and I couldn't
- 9:18place it. I decided to be friends with her, but
- 9:21just distant friends. I wouldn't let her super
- 9:23far into my life. We had hung out a few more
- 9:25times, and she opened up to me that she was in
- 9:28an abusive relationship. I thought to myself,
- 9:30oh, this is why I felt off about her. I could
- 9:33just sense something wasn't right, and this had
- 9:35to be it. Well, I felt for her and wanted to
- 9:38help her, so I let her even more into my life,
- 9:40let her into my friend's lives. And as I got
- 9:42to know her more and more, things began to get
- 9:45stranger and stranger in just a short few months.
- 9:47Her boyfriend started trying to stalk me on Facebook
- 9:50and this girl started to tell one story to me
- 9:52and another to my friends. As we began to catch
- 9:55her in her lies, things took a weird and dangerous
- 9:57turn and I quickly cut her out of my life. I
- 10:00told my therapist when I first met this girl
- 10:01that a very quiet bell went off in my head and
- 10:04that I ignored it and made sense of it and my
- 10:07therapist had told me to listen to it because
- 10:09I had good instincts. But did I listen to my
- 10:12instincts? Nope. I didn't want to judge her and
- 10:15I wanted to give her a chance and it fit me in
- 10:17the butt in the end. My therapist was surprised
- 10:19by how drastic the events turned out to be, but
- 10:22wasn't surprised by the fact that my gut was
- 10:24right and reminded me for the third time that
- 10:26year that I needed to practice listening to it.
- 10:29For me, anytime I don't listen to my gut, it's
- 10:31because of guilt. I hate not liking someone.
- 10:34I genuinely want to like most people and logically
- 10:37understand I won't vibe with most people, but
- 10:39when a complete stranger doesn't sit right with
- 10:42me and I have no reason to not like them, but
- 10:45something in me just won't let me, then I start
- 10:47to feel an inward battle. Look, I know myself
- 10:50and I'm continually getting to know myself more
- 10:53and more and I don't waste energy on beef with
- 10:55people. Some animals, sure. Fashion trends, absolutely.
- 10:59I might drastically shake my head and say, I
- 11:02could have told you that when you let me know
- 11:04the outcome of a choice you made. But that's
- 11:07about it. If you're a person and I don't like
- 11:09you, I just won't be around you. When I was younger,
- 11:12it's a very different story. I'd waste my energy
- 11:14on you if I didn't like you. If I had a bad vibe
- 11:17from you or didn't trust you, then I was telling
- 11:20anyone who would listen to me. But as I got older,
- 11:23I learned to keep my mouth shut and let things
- 11:25play out with you from a distance because I don't
- 11:27have to let you into my space. I remember when
- 11:29I was like 13 or 14, there was a girl who started
- 11:32dating someone close to me. Well first, I just
- 11:35didn't get any good vibes from her. She came
- 11:37off full of it from the beginning, and too, I
- 11:40started to hear not the best things about her.
- 11:42That's all I needed at that age to get my engine
- 11:44running and my mouth blabbing to anyone who would
- 11:47listen to me about why I didn't like her. Eventually
- 11:50the person close to me let me know that they
- 11:52were going to end up together, getting married
- 11:53one day, and out of respect to him to keep my
- 11:56opinion to myself. So I did. I didn't want to,
- 11:59but I did. Well, let me tell y 'all, I was right.
- 12:02Everything I ever thought or decided about her
- 12:04came out and played out to be true many years
- 12:07later. Little Teenage Me was right and Late 20s
- 12:10Me was very happy about it, because once again,
- 12:13I'm a brat and I know it. Has there ever been
- 12:16a time that you listened to your gut and were
- 12:18so thankful you did? The girl you decided not
- 12:21to be friends with even though everyone else
- 12:23accepted her into the group turned out to not
- 12:25be who they all thought she was? The guy you
- 12:27stopped seeing because something about him just
- 12:29didn't sit right with you turned out to be America's
- 12:32most wanted? Just kidding. I'm just kidding y
- 12:35'all. I'm just being dramatic as usual, but you
- 12:38get the point. What about choosing between schools
- 12:40or jobs or maybe churches? You go and visit and
- 12:43just didn't feel peace when you left, but it
- 12:45seems like the best option and everyone around
- 12:47you agrees that it is, but you decide not to
- 12:50go and sometime down the road you found out why
- 12:53and are so glad you made a different choice.
- 12:55How did it feel when whatever it was came to
- 12:58light or was made clear? I remember when I walked
- 13:01out of the middle of the service of a church
- 13:02I was visiting because whatever the pastor was
- 13:04saying wasn't sitting right with my spirit and
- 13:06to this day I have zero regrets. There's a story
- 13:10in the Bible about a man named Nehemiah. Homi
- 13:13got the okay from the king that he worked for
- 13:16to go back to Judah and work on it. Well, some
- 13:19guys sent some messages to Nehemiah that they
- 13:22needed to meet with them. But Nehemiah knew in
- 13:24his gut that it was a trap to do him harm, so
- 13:27he ignored the messages to meet. He didn't get
- 13:29a sign from God. God didn't send our guy, an
- 13:32angel, to tell him not to meet with them because
- 13:34it was a trap. Nehemiah just had discernment
- 13:37and knew in his gut so he trusted it and was
- 13:40right. I remember when I would study to take
- 13:43multiple choice tests and my mom would say to
- 13:45me, okay make sure to always go with your first
- 13:48choice because if you go with your second and
- 13:50it's wrong and your first one is right you'll
- 13:52regret it. But if you go with your first one
- 13:55and it's wrong you'll be like oh well and no
- 13:57better for next time. I guess you could say anytime
- 14:00I haven't trusted my gut instinct that I could
- 14:02hear her saying that to me after. It's really
- 14:05good advice and I try to apply it whenever the
- 14:07occasion presents itself, but I wouldn't have
- 14:09started this conversation the way I did if I
- 14:11had mastered it by now. Life is no good filled
- 14:14with regrets. I'd rather go through the rest
- 14:16of my life trusting my gut and learning from
- 14:18it than to spend it wishing I had. God gave us
- 14:21to sermon. He won't judge us for using it. In
- 14:24fact, he wants us to because it's a gift from
- 14:26him that comes with the spirit. So, Are we more
- 14:30scared of what people might think of us when
- 14:32we use it, or what God might think of us if we
- 14:34don't? What harm might it cause others if we
- 14:37don't use it, versus if we do? No, truly, think
- 14:41about it. If you don't feel peace over the choice
- 14:44everyone else wants you to make, how will it
- 14:47harm them more than you? If you get a weird vibe
- 14:49from the one person, guy or girl, that everyone
- 14:52else seems to be friends with, but you decide
- 14:54to keep your distance, who will that hurt? You
- 14:56don't have to be friends with everyone. If you
- 14:59decide to get someone to walk you to your car
- 15:01because you feel uneasy about the person that
- 15:03just so happened to be going everywhere you are
- 15:06in the store, who will that hurt? If they aren't
- 15:09following you, then they shouldn't notice a person
- 15:11walking you to your car and get offended. If
- 15:14you decide to stop going to a certain church
- 15:16that maybe your friends serve at because worship
- 15:19doesn't sit right with you there, the preaching
- 15:21doesn't sit right with your spirit, maybe you
- 15:23just don't feel the spirit in there at all and
- 15:25it feels dead. Who is going to hurt more than
- 15:28you? What harm can it actually cause others to
- 15:31listen to your gut more than it can hurt you
- 15:33not to? Just like spiritual gifts, your gut instinct
- 15:37is like a muscle you have to grow. The more you
- 15:39use it, the more you exercise it, the more it
- 15:42will grow, the more you become confident in it
- 15:45and trust it. But just like working out and growing
- 15:47muscles, you have to start small. We can't jump
- 15:50in and start lifting 50 pound weights day one,
- 15:53or at least I can't. You need to start with your
- 15:55fives and your tens, work up to your fifteens
- 15:57and twenties, and eventually we'll be taking
- 16:00on the big guys. What do your five and tens look
- 16:02like? For me, I think my five pound weights are
- 16:05when my discernment tells me not to trust someone,
- 16:07then I simply just don't let them into my life.
- 16:10I will just need to fight the mind trash of,
- 16:12you're being judgy or a mean girl, and remind
- 16:14myself of all the other times I didn't listen
- 16:16and what happened. I'll remind myself that it
- 16:19doesn't mean me being weary of her doesn't equal
- 16:22me being me. but it can equal me not letting
- 16:25her fully into my life and into my space. Remember,
- 16:29gut instinct as a believer can be not just intuition,
- 16:33but spiritual discernment, which is a gift from
- 16:35our Heavenly Father. Why would we waste that,
- 16:38much less doubt a gift from Him? Let's work on
- 16:41being free from the doubts and uneasiness we
- 16:44have when it's actually spiritual discernment.
- 16:46Let's strengthen our gut instinct and learn to
- 16:48trust it. and let's let go of whatever mind trash
- 16:52or fears that typically come along with it, that
- 16:55is holding us back and down from feeling secure,
- 16:59trust in our gift from Jesus and freed. Okay,
- 17:02let's pray. Okay, Jesus, thank you for spiritual
- 17:08discernment. Thank you for the gift that you've
- 17:10given us. I ask that we don't waste it, that
- 17:13we don't keep sitting in regrets, wishing we
- 17:15had listened to it because it's from you and
- 17:18you're all -knowing. You're all powerful. You're
- 17:20a beginning and end. Have us remember when we
- 17:24do start to doubt it that it's from you. It's
- 17:26you nudging us. It's your spirit letting us know,
- 17:29hey, look out for that. Hey, be careful there.
- 17:32Hey, maybe we don't make that choice. To not
- 17:37sit in doubts and what ifs. To not sit with regrets
- 17:40of wishing we had listened to it. That we ponder
- 17:45it and grow it. so that not only can we have
- 17:48trust in the choices that we've made, but honestly
- 17:52grow our trust in you through that. Have our
- 17:56trust in you get stronger because of that. And
- 17:59have it grow our faith in you because of that.
- 18:02Help us wipe away the mind trash that comes along.
- 18:06Help us wipe away the insecurities that come
- 18:08along with it. And help us just step into faith
- 18:12with it. Help us step into the faith of our gut
- 18:16instinct, of the warning bells that go off. Help
- 18:19us not silence them. Warning bells are not there
- 18:22to be silenced. They are there to be listened
- 18:24to. They are there to tell us when to evacuate.
- 18:27Continue to grow our discernment. Continue to
- 18:29help us grow our discernment. And in Jesus' name,
- 18:33amen. Alright, thank you so much for listening
- 18:49you guys. I really appreciate it I hope that
- 18:52you enjoyed this episode and hopefully got something
