- 0:07The Cincinnati Reds faced the Chicago Cubs for a Thursday afternoon game at Wrigley Field on July 28, 1977.
- 0:14The Reds were coached by Sparky Anderson and were coming off back-to-back World Series championships in 1975 and 76.
- 0:22They entered the game with a 49-48 record.
- 0:25The Cubs were coached by Herman Franks. Franks had had success as a manager with the Giants in the late 60s,
- 0:31averaging 92 wins in his four years in San Francisco, but never managing to finish higher than second place.
- 0:371977 was Frank's first year in Chicago, and the Cubbies were starting off hot,
- 0:43with a 59-39 record going into this game with the Reds.
- 0:47This is the local Chicago radio broadcast featuring announcers Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreaux.
- 1:17Today, Pete Rose will be leading off playing at third base.
- 1:21Ken Griffey, batting second today, has been flip-flopping Rose and Griffey in this series.
- 1:28Griffey in right field, and he'll be followed by veteran Joe Morgan at second base,
- 1:33with George Foster in left field, Foster batting clean up.
- 1:37Johnny Bench doing the catching, hitting fifth.
- 1:39Cesar Geronimo in center field, batting sixth.
- 1:44Dave Concepcion at shortstop, batting in the number seven spot,
- 1:48with Mike Lum replacing the injured Danny Griesen over at first base.
- 1:55Lum hitting eighth.
- 1:56Dale Murray coming out of the bullpen, where he has won five, lost two this year.
- 2:03Tall right-hander whom they obtained from the Montreal Expos.
- 2:08Tony Perez was involved in that deal.
- 2:11Murray, in addition to his five victories, has three saves.
- 2:15For the Cubs this afternoon, Yvonne DeJesus to lead off at shortstop.
- 2:20Larry Bittner batting second, and he'll be in left field.
- 2:25Bill Buckner started one of the first game yesterday, will be at first base today,
- 2:32and Buckner hitting third, with Bobby Mercer in right field, Mercer batting clean up.
- 2:37Jerry Maradas up among the league leaders, he is second today, Parker in hitting in the National League,
- 2:42starting today, six points behind Parker.
- 2:46Jerry hitting 333.
- 2:48He'll be in center field.
- 2:49Steve Onoveros at third base, batting sixth, with Manny Grillo at second, Grillo batting seventh.
- 2:57George Middewald again doing the catching, and Ray Burris with his last outing,
- 3:03dropped behind the league for the year.
- 3:05He's now nine and ten in the season.
- 3:08Pause here for station identification.
- 3:10We'll be right back.
- 3:11This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 3:14This is WGN Radio Chicago.
- 3:22Ray Burris has now a four-game losing streak, and it's hoped that he can end them here this afternoon.
- 3:31I'm sure a lot of you fans will remember the last victory that Ray was able to post,
- 3:36and that was here at Wrigley Field against the New York Mets back on the 25th of June.
- 3:43Remember?
- 3:44He had gone all the way, and going into the bottom of the ninth inning,
- 3:47it looked like he was going to be a loser in it because the Cubs were trailing in the ballgame, four to one.
- 3:52And miracle of miracles, they wound up with four runs in the inning to win it by a score of five to four.
- 3:59That happens to be Ray Burris' last victory.
- 4:02He has a kind of a suspended victory going, too, and that also was against the Mets on the day in New York,
- 4:08the night in New York, rather, when he pitched in the blackout game,
- 4:12carrying a lead in that ballgame into the seventh inning.
- 4:17Let's hope that when that one is resumed and the Cubs go back into New York at Chase Stadium
- 4:21for their final visit into New York this year, that they'll be able to hold on to that lead,
- 4:25and Ray will get himself a victory.
- 4:27The thing is, when you add up the number of games that the Cubs have played,
- 4:31they don't quite total out as to the game number, for example, that this one is.
- 4:37This is their 99th game of the season, and they say, well, how can that be?
- 4:41Because they won 58 and lost 39, so this should be the 98th game.
- 4:46Well, that suspended game is still considered in there, and that's how you come up with that difference.
- 4:52The records that the guys posted in that one have been entered on their totals for the year, their hits,
- 4:58two runs by the end, though there weren't many in that suspended game.
- 5:02But that's the reason for the discrepancy that you have in the number of games played
- 5:07as against the total wins and losses.
- 5:09Here at home this year, the Cubs have done exceptionally well.
- 5:12They've won 34, lost 17, and of course, most ball clubs will play a whole lot better on their home field,
- 5:20and they will when they get on the road. The same is true of the Cincinnati Reds.
- 5:24They're 10 games over the 500 mark at their ballpark where we'll be playing on Monday night,
- 5:30Tuesday night, and Wednesday night. They've won 29 there, lost 19.
- 5:34On the road, it's something else. The Reds are just one game over 500.
- 5:39I'm sorry, they're nine games under 500, 20 and 29, and that's the reason why they're only one game
- 5:46over the 500 mark for the year. They've not been able to win with any consistency on the road.
- 5:51Pete Rose has got the lineup guard for Sparky Anderson out on home plate
- 5:59with the Peanuts Lowry of the Chicago Cubs, the third-base coach.
- 6:02The umpire behind the plate today will be Andy Olson, a veteran.
- 6:06Rookie Jerry Crawford will be at first base.
- 6:08Doug Harvey, veteran at second, and Paul Pryor, who worked behind the plate in the second game yesterday,
- 6:17will be at third base this afternoon.
- 6:19Wray has won victory and won defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds this year.
- 6:25Burris went all the way to beat Cincinnati here at Wrigley Field earlier in the season.
- 6:33That was, I think, back on the 24th of April.
- 6:38Then when he started against them just about a week or so later over at their ballpark,
- 6:42they KO'd him in a hurry. Worked only one inning, and he was wild.
- 6:46He walked five, gave up three hits, and was charged with five runs.
- 6:50A couple of men that were on base when he left the ballgame scored off the reliever,
- 6:54but all of them, of course, were charged against Wray.
- 6:57So he is one and one for the year against the Cincinnati Reds.
- 7:02His earned run average is a high one, and I know that he, of course, would like to get it down.
- 7:07And we're hopeful, and all of us, that he's going to be able to come on strong
- 7:11in the last part of the 1977 season with the kind of a finish that he had last year.
- 7:16And that, of course, would bode very, very well for the Cubs, who need a strong performance,
- 7:22and a consistently strong performance from fellows like Wray and from Bill Bonham
- 7:26to go along with Rick Ruschel, Mike Kruko, to keep the Cubs.
- 7:31Either in that number one spot or contending for it the rest of the year.
- 7:35Here they come out of that dugout in the third base side.
- 7:38Bill Buster, number 22, running out the first base.
- 7:4115-gorkman wall behind the play.
- 7:44Wray Burris, 34 out to the mound.
- 7:46Number seven, Bobby Mercer out to right field, and they're going to get a standing ovation.
- 7:50Gary Morales out to center.
- 7:52Larry Bittner, to left field.
- 7:55Yvonne DeJesus at short stop.
- 7:58Yvonne Averas over at third.
- 8:01Manny Creo has not yet come out of the dugout.
- 8:04Here he comes, number 19.
- 8:06And the folks are giving them a standing ovation at Wrigley Field.
- 8:09Kind of an overcast day.
- 8:11The temperature here on the warm side, 81 degrees.
- 8:16The ballpark temperature at game time.
- 8:19And the win today is in favor of the hitters, blowing out at 15 miles per hour.
- 8:24Now, Vance Fathergill at the organ with our national anthem.
- 9:24Another excellent crowd on hand.
- 9:48Wray Burris gets sent to face the veteran, Pete Rose.
- 9:54Let's take time out for this message.

- 10:58visit Fireside Imports on Gulf Road, just west of the Woodfield Shopping Center in Schomburg.
- 11:08Pete Rose stepping in.
- 11:10It was so far in the series, and his batting average now standing at 306
- 11:14to wind up in Burris's first pitch.
- 11:16Fastball that misses just outside.
- 11:18Ball one to the switch hitting veteran Rose.
- 11:21Half a dozen homers for him.
- 11:2341 runs, batted in.
- 11:26Wind up in the pitch.
- 11:28Rose takes.
- 11:29It's a strike right at the letter.
- 11:30It's a fastball to level the cow at one and one.
- 11:34Ken Whippy in the on-deck circle to be followed by Joe Morgan.
- 11:40Burris gets his sign.
- 11:41The right-hander is next pitch.
- 11:43Swung on.
- 11:44Deep drive.
- 11:45Right field.
- 11:46Look out.
- 11:47Back to the wall.
- 11:48It's pressure, and it is gone.
- 11:51A home run just over the 358-foot mark for Pete Rose.
- 11:57Here he comes.
- 11:58He's not frowning.
- 11:59He's running around the base.
- 12:01The reds with a one-to-nothing lead on the third pitch of the ballgame.
- 12:11That marks the 19th home run given up by Ray Burris.
- 12:20Line shot.
- 12:21Ken Whippy stepping in, hitting.323.
- 12:25Left-hander, five for 12 in a series, and he takes a strike.
- 12:37Rose had come to town hitting.316.
- 12:39He dropped ten points, and he got one of them back in a hurry.
- 12:43Into the ball.
- 12:44Ball one.
- 12:45Strike one to Griffey.
- 12:47The reds' pitching has left a lot to be desired this year.
- 12:52They continue to hit that long ball with great authority.
- 12:55Here's a swing and a bouncing ball fouled on the first-base side.
- 12:58Grabbed by Buckner, just past Coach Russ Nixon.
- 13:01They now have 118 team homers this year.
- 13:07They have allowed the opposition 88.
- 13:13Joe Morgan in the on-deck circle and a count on the batter, Ken Griffey.
- 13:16Ball one.
- 13:17Strike two.
- 13:21Phillies, by the way, will be getting underway out at Los Angeles in about an hour and a half.
- 13:25Here's a swing and a foul ball out of play.
- 13:27Good fast ball.
- 13:28Ball one.
- 13:29Strike two.
- 13:30Milwaukee and Boston are playing at Fenway Park this afternoon.
- 13:33White Sox and Detroit Tigers are off in the America League.
- 13:36And the San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets are idle in the National League.
- 13:43Montreal and San Diego are also idle.
- 13:49Wind up in the one-two pitch.
- 13:51Griffey takes the fast ball low and inside.
- 13:54Ball two.
- 13:55Strike two.
- 13:56The Orioles and the Yankees are underway at Yankee Stadium.
- 13:59Baltimore, a big winner over them last night.
- 14:02The Orioles now with a two-game lead over Boston, three over the Yankees.
- 14:06Two-two delivery.
- 14:08Griffey swings, deep drive, right field.
- 14:10Bursher coming over to his right, gets it on the first hop.
- 14:13Griffey lines a single to right field.
- 14:15And the first two Cincinnati Reds have reached.
- 14:18A homer by Rose, a single by Griffey.
- 14:22And it's another shaky start for Ray Byrd.
- 14:28Joe Morgan, the batter.
- 14:30Joe won for twelve in the series, hitting 294.
- 14:38He got to town Tuesday.
- 14:40He was hitting 303.
- 14:42Now down to 294.
- 14:46Burst from the stretch to Speedy Griffey.
- 14:48Pretty good lead.
- 14:50Here's the pitch, low, into the dirt.
- 14:53And, matter of all, keeping an eye on the runner as he scrambles for the ball
- 14:58on the push-base side of the plate, ball one.
- 15:12Down to one and all.
- 15:13The veteran Morgan, who has fourteen homers, stretched by Ray.
- 15:20Here's the low kick and a fast ball, swung out of it, kept it down and away.
- 15:24Ball one, stretch one.
- 15:27In that game today, between the Yankees and the Orioles, Rudy May going for Baltimore,
- 15:34going after his twelfth win of the year.
- 15:36Mike Torres for the Yankees, eight and ten.
- 15:39Laptoss over to first base, the runner, back safely.
- 15:43Hines and Paxson for Milwaukee and Boston, respectively, at Fenway Park.
- 15:50Another throw out of first base and he jumps back in safely.
- 15:58Ball one, strike one pitch.
- 16:00Mercer very deep in right field.
- 16:02The pitch to Morgan, swung out, slaps the ground ball,
- 16:05three on the grass, has it close to burst.
- 16:07Morgan is all safe at first base.
- 16:11And they have runners at first and second.
- 16:15And the opener, dome out of it, outfield dirt there that's been sprinkled by Bay
- 16:20in front of his uniform, his buddy,
- 16:22Rio cutting over behind him, well over onto the grass on the right side.
- 16:28Very, very close play as he whips that throw to burst.
- 16:31Just a little late coming out of the bag with his foot.
- 16:34It was very, very close, but the call from Jerry Crawford goes in favor of Morgan
- 16:40and the Reds with nobody out, leading one to nothing.
- 16:42You have runners at first and second at the Major Leagues leading home run hitter
- 16:47and leading run batted in guy, George Foster the batter.
- 16:54Hitting three-fifteen, Foster with 32 homers and 96 runs batted in.
- 17:01Right at Morgan with an infield hit.
- 17:05Burris's first pitch high with a fastball.
- 17:08And Donnie Moore is up and throwing already in the cup bullpen.
- 17:16Foster's driven in three runs in the series, his five hits, including a homer.
- 17:24Things like this guy never goes off.
- 17:26Nobody out, runners at first and second, a long look at Grippy at second to pitch.
- 17:31Goes after a fastball around the shoulders and fouls it back upstairs out of play.
- 17:34It's one-on-one on him.
- 17:39Donnie benched it beyond Vexer.
- 17:45Dubs after dropping the first game yesterday, 6-2, came back with five runs in the eighth
- 17:49to capture the nightcap, 5-1.
- 17:52And of course, they won the opening game of the series on Rick Ruschel's superb shutout,
- 17:56three to second.
- 18:00One-one delivery coming up to Foster.
- 18:04Swing out of it, good slider, ball one, strike two.
- 18:16Closest to Foster in the dash are Egan Homers, Mike Spitt of the Phillies, who now is 27-5,
- 18:22fewer than Foster.
- 18:26His 96 runs batted in, 13 more than his nearest pursuer in that category, Steve Garvey of
- 18:32the Dodgers.
- 18:33A look at second to pitch, swing out of it.
- 18:36Good delivery, a low to bounce in the inside corner, handcuffed it.
- 18:41Big strikeout.
- 18:48Donnie Vetch stepping in.
- 18:50That is 2,000 run batted in.
- 18:53Some cheers and some booze for this guy.
- 18:59Hitting 270.
- 19:0122 Homers and 71 runs batted in.
- 19:05The better man catcher, Donnie Vetch Rod Andrew, of course, holds the bat high over the right
- 19:09shoulder versus, he's up in front of it, drills it deep but foul.
- 19:14Thank heaven.
- 19:28Speedy Griffey at second base.
- 19:31Leaving Speedy or Morgan on it first.
- 19:34Ball one delivery to Donnie Vetch.
- 19:37Burst fired.
- 19:39Swing and a deep drive left field.
- 19:41Vetch is going to be over the wall a home run.
- 19:45He got that one up a bit and Vetch really liked it.
- 19:49Bittner just fluffed in the post with the ball.
- 19:52Might not go over the wall but tear him back off of it.
- 19:56It cleared it and it is now 4-0 since then.
- 20:0420 of home run off of Ray.
- 20:11Well, he pitched well to Foster and then really grooved on here to Vetch.
- 20:16All it does is take one pitch for this lineup but it's gone, especially with that wind blowing out.
- 20:21We may have five or six more home runs before this day is over.
- 20:25Let's hope that the next three or four will be by the Cubs.
- 20:30Connable stepping in.
- 20:34Left-handed hitter takes a strike.
- 20:37He's three for ten here at Wrigley Field in this series.
- 20:40Batting 272.
- 20:42Saw left-handed.
- 20:430-1 pitch.
- 20:44Swung out.
- 20:45Deep drive.
- 20:46Left field.
- 20:47Bittner going back.
- 20:48Back to the warning crack.
- 20:49He's there and he grabs it.
- 20:50One-handed for out number two.
- 20:56There's been an infield single.
- 20:58There's been a strike-off but there have been some very hard shots.
- 21:04Vetch is over with two men on.
- 21:07It's 23rd of the year and he now has 74 runs about it in.
- 21:17Dave Concepcion has been blank so far here at Wrigley Field, hitting 281.
- 21:26He's dropped nine points.
- 21:27He swings and fouls the first pitch over to the box seats in the first base side.
- 21:31Strike one.
- 21:36Davey with a half a dozen homers, driven in 34 runs this year versus fastball sink low.
- 21:42Ball one.
- 21:43Strike one.
- 21:46Great Eli Schulman out this afternoon with Sy Gold and Holly Betteno, both the record company executives.
- 21:54At the pitch, a little bit low.
- 21:57Ball two.
- 21:58Strike one.
- 21:59And they also brought with them Bob Lubliner.
- 22:04They barely settle in their seats before they see four runs on the board for the Reds.
- 22:09It's a little off that pitch and it's low.
- 22:10Ball three.
- 22:11Strike one.
- 22:18Pete Rose opened it with his seventh homer of the year.
- 22:22He's dropped for the singles to strike out of posture and then bench lined a solid homer over the left field wall.
- 22:28Geronimo has lined hard to Bittner.
- 22:32And now the count is ball three.
- 22:34Strike one on Davey Concepcion.
- 22:37Here's the pitch.
- 22:38Swung on foul down the right field line.
- 22:40Out of play.
- 22:41Ball three.
- 22:42Strike two.
- 22:43We'll be at Cincinnati tomorrow night, Saturday night, Sunday afternoon.
- 22:50We'll be at Penn over at Cincinnati for night games Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
- 22:54Three-two pitch.
- 22:55Swung on.
- 22:56Round ball.
- 22:57Deep in the hole.
- 22:58Roda Baris in the glass house.
- 22:59No play.
- 23:00Concepcion is on with an infield single.
- 23:10Five hits in the inning.
- 23:12Two of them home runs.
- 23:14Four runs at Cally.
- 23:17And Mike Lom, two for seven.
- 23:19Coming in for the injured Danny Griesen, who hopes to be back in the lineup when they leave town and start their series tomorrow.
- 23:28He's hitting just 167.
- 23:30Eleven hits for him and clear the homer and eight runs batted in.
- 23:33One RBI in the series.
- 23:37Two out.
- 23:38Roda at first.
- 23:39Concepcion just might go.
- 23:41Not on this pitch.
- 23:42It's a strike at the Luggers.
- 23:50An off day for four clubs in the National League.
- 23:56And for the White Sox and the Tigers in the American League.
- 24:01Go to first.
- 24:02Concepcion falls back in the bag safely at first.
- 24:07Davey with 21 stolen bases this year and has been caught stealing only five times.
- 24:14Four, nothing.
- 24:15Top of the first with two up.
- 24:18Another throw.
- 24:19Almost got him that time.
- 24:20A good quick tag by Buckner.
- 24:29More continuing to throw in the cup bullpen.
- 24:33Mercer just in front of the curve in the leacher wall in right field.
- 24:38Roda's very deep in center.
- 24:40Same for Bittner in left.
- 24:42Last ball, high and away, ball one, strike one.
- 24:45Win today in contrast to what we've had the first three days of this series is blowing out about 15 miles per hour.
- 24:53And it's a bit overcast.
- 24:56Just a touch on the sticky side.
- 24:58Temperature in the low 80s.
- 25:02And burst for the 1-1 delivery.
- 25:05The kick to pitch.
- 25:06Fast ball for a strike over the outside corner, ball one, strike two.
- 25:13Two homers here in this first inning by the Reds.
- 25:16Pete Rose and Johnny Bench.
- 25:22Going to first and Concepcion again is to fall in on all fours to avoid being picked off.
- 25:33Stretch by Burris.
- 25:35Here's the pitch.
- 25:36Swung out at a high, deep drive, luck out.
- 25:39Holy mackerel.
- 25:41That's way, way back in the bleachers.
- 25:44Hanging breaking ball.
- 25:46And Mike Lund has given the Reds a six to nothing lead.
- 25:53His 12th base hit of the year.
- 25:55His second homer.
- 26:06And there's Bambing for a change.
- 26:16Well, they're rejoicing over the first base dugout.
- 26:20Pretty long looking on the opposite side of the field.
- 26:24The ninth man in the batting order, pitcher Dale Murray, in his first major league start before he throws the first pitch.
- 26:30He'll have at least a six to nothing lead.
- 26:32Right-hander, swings late, fouls that one down the right-field line after looking at a ball.
- 26:49One-one delivery.
- 26:51Going outside.
- 26:52Ball to strike one.
- 26:57Murray, because he's worked primarily in short relief, has only been up six times this year.
- 27:02There's a strike.
- 27:03Ball to strike two.
- 27:10We're in the first inning, six to nothing, Cincinnati.
- 27:13Bases are empty.
- 27:15They have three home runs so far.
- 27:18Out of two and two on the hitters.
- 27:22Wind up by Burris.
- 27:23Fast ball.
- 27:24Got a piece of it.
- 27:25Fouled it out of play.
- 27:26Into the upper deck on the first base side and it's still two and two on him.
- 27:37Here's the lineup, two-two pitch.
- 27:38Swung out of missed and a curve for strike three.
- 27:40They have batted well.
- 27:43This crowd is bully.
- 27:46Six run.
- 27:48Six hits.
- 27:49Three of those hits are home runs.
- 27:53One with the bases empty, one with two men on, and one with one man on.
- 27:58Bases left empty.
- 28:00And after a half inning, the Cubs have a hill to climb.
- 28:03The Reds six to Cubs nothing.

- 28:35I've learned a lot since coming up in 1966 and not just about baseball.
- 28:40I've learned you don't have to smoke to enjoy tobacco.
- 28:43I'm Bobby Mercer and you can start enjoying tobacco without smoking too.
- 28:48Try My Old Happy Days Mint.
- 28:50It's smokeless tobacco.
- 28:52Just a pinch between your cheek and gum and you've got full tobacco pleasure.
- 28:57Whether you're cutting the lawn or cutting down a base runner, mild Happy Days Mint.
- 29:01Have you tried it yet?
- 29:06Well, Dale Murray, a big right-hander, strong guy.
- 29:25Looked Montreal last year.
- 29:28In his career in the majors, he has worked only in relief.
- 29:32And this year he has been in 39 ball games for Sparky Anderson and the Reds.
- 29:40The turnaround average is not a great one at all.
- 29:42In fact, it's pretty high, 4.71, especially high for relief pitchers.
- 29:47He's won five, lost two, very first major league start.
- 29:53And DeJesus stepping in, takes the fastball for very first right.
- 30:00In 65 innings, he's given up 78 base hits and walked 28, struck out 28 also.
- 30:08Big right-hander delivers to DeJesus, takes the fastball in tight ball, one strike one.
- 30:13Yvonne, one hit in the series, a triple that triggered the five-run explosion in the eighth inning of yesterday's second game.
- 30:19Batting now on a 2.51 for the year, one-one pitch, looks at a ball outside, ball two, strike one.
- 30:34Murray-Wynes, two-one pitch, in very tight at the belt, ball three, strike one.
- 30:4027 years of age, native to the big state of Texas, in the little town of Cuero, Texas.
- 30:506-4, about 2.05.
- 30:55Last, here's the swing and a deep drive, let's see it.
- 30:58Hey, it's back there. It's off the line for Exavation.
- 31:02There's the throw for Pusbury's side, he is in with a double.
- 31:06He'll open up the bottom in the first inning on a 3-1 delivery.
- 31:10Well, Yvonne is up that triple, the trigger of the eighth inning in yesterday's ball, second game.
- 31:16Opens up the bottom in the first with a two-base hit.
- 31:22It's 14th double of the year, that is 98th hit of the season.
- 31:28Murray got behind and had to pay the price.
- 31:34Larry Fitner, four for 11 in the series, hitting 294 steps in with eight homers and 41 runs right at it.
- 31:45It was 81 appearances that Murray was in last year for Montreal, most in the league.
- 31:53Short arms that pitch and it's high, ball one.
- 31:5881, really, for Perkins.
- 32:01He had only four victories, but he still was an outstanding pitcher.
- 32:051-1 delivery, sinker outside.
- 32:11He was in 30th of Montreal's 55 victories last year, more than half of it.
- 32:22He had a real hot streak at one time.
- 32:25Ball to tails outside, ball three.
- 32:3374 through 76.
- 32:37He did not allow a home run in 247 and a third consecutive innings.
- 32:46The streak finally ended last August.
- 32:48Bobby Mercer, there's a ball too high.
- 32:53Fitner walks, nobody out.
- 32:55The aces hit second.
- 32:56Buckner the batter.
- 32:58Bobby Mercer, then with the Giants, the fellow ended that streak of homeless consecutive innings by Dale Murray.
- 33:13It was only the second home run that he had allowed in pro ball and the other had come in 74 off the bat of Houston's Bob Watson.
- 33:24There can be determined that's the longest homeless string in the post-World War II area.
- 33:31Buckner, picking a bunt, takes a fastball outside.
- 33:35Buckner, two for four in yesterday's game, hitting 285.
- 33:39He has a couple of homers, 24 runs batted in.
- 33:43Six to nothing Reds, bottom of the first inning, nobody out.
- 33:46The pitch, fastball, takes for a strike in the inside corner.
- 33:50Ball one, strike one.
- 33:54The Reds got three homers and six runs in the top of the first inning.
- 34:00If you came in late, you didn't miss much, huh?
- 34:03One-one pitch, check the swing, it's outside, ball two, strike one.
- 34:12Got behind the de-haces on the three-one pitch, ripped the double off the vines in left center field.
- 34:19Walked Bittner on four pitches.
- 34:21Now there's a two-one count on Buckner.
- 34:23The look, the pitch, fastball, swim-on, deep drive, right center field, got a chance, gets the way back.
- 34:29That's the bow winner, quickly leading to a six-to-three on Buckner's homer.
- 34:59With one swing at the back, Buckner has won the Reds lead in a half.
- 35:09Same deal, Murray, who had gone so many innings, 247 and a third, without allowing a homer.
- 35:15That streak snapped by Bobby Mercer, who now steps in, takes the fastball for a strike at the knees.
- 35:23Bobby hitting 272, 14 homers, 60 runs, batted in.
- 35:29Murray winds, sidearm pitches up, Bobby led up on it, fouls it down the line.
- 35:34Much pause for station identification.
- 35:36This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 35:39This is WGN Radio Chicago, one minute after two.
- 35:48Scorer of this one may wind up like the Fat Man softball pick-to-caverage scorer.
- 35:55Wind up the 0-2 pitch, high, wasted it, ball, one strike, two.
- 36:01Six-to-three, nobody out, batted in the first inning, the Reds with the six.
- 36:09I'm going to say what's going on here.
- 36:11The fastball swung out, deep drive, left field, left baby, booster, 11L winner and it's six to four.
- 36:18Out to the field, homer.
- 36:20Bobby has just now arrived at home plate number 15 for him this year.
- 36:46Still nobody out.
- 36:54It is now a two-run lead.
- 37:04Jerry Morales will be the hitter.
- 37:10Dale Murray may long remember his first start in the major leagues.
- 37:15Pedro Borbon now going in the Cincinnati bullpen.
- 37:22Ramos takes the first pitch of strike.
- 37:25As I mentioned earlier, Jerry, the second leading hitter in the National League, 333.
- 37:32Seven homers, 56 runs batted in, takes that one into the dirt.
- 37:36Came right over the top and it was into the dirt about three feet in front of the plate.
- 37:40Pops to the backstop.
- 37:43One strike one.
- 37:49The ball too high.
- 37:51Ball too strike one.
- 37:53So far only five home runs here at Wrigley Field today.
- 38:00Mercer with an opposite field shot.
- 38:02Here's a swing and a mess to it too.
- 38:16Ten runs have been scored.
- 38:18All have been combined or come in on homers.
- 38:21Here's a swing and a high pop-up.
- 38:23The first baseman, Mike Lund, shading his eyes down the line.
- 38:26He's got it in fair territory.
- 38:30First out in the bottom of the first.
- 38:36And Steve Onabar is stepping in.
- 38:39He's hitting 287.
- 38:43Seven homers for Onabar.
- 38:46Loading one in the first game yesterday.
- 38:49Thirty-eight runs batted in.
- 38:51Onabar has his seven homers, four have been hit here at Wrigley Field.
- 38:55One pitch of fastball and he takes a strike.
- 38:59Four-ball continuing to throw in their bullpen.
- 39:04Six-four.
- 39:05One away, nobody on.
- 39:07That up is high.
- 39:08Ball one strike one.
- 39:13Manny Creo in the on-back circle.
- 39:17Wind blowing out.
- 39:19You can sure tell it.
- 39:20One-one pitch is high.
- 39:21Ball two strike one.
- 39:27The Cubs now with 65 home runs for the year against 70 by the opposition.
- 39:32Two-one pitch.
- 39:33Strike call with a good fastball.
- 39:35Let her high away.
- 39:36Ball two strike two.
- 39:39And 40 of the Cubs' 65 homers have come here at home this year.
- 39:46Twenty-five on the road.
- 39:47Two-two pitch.
- 39:48Gets out in front, rips a deep foul down the right field line into the boxes.
- 39:53Ball two strike two.
- 40:00The Cubs now have played 51 games on the road.
- 40:03They're at home.
- 40:05We're at 29.
- 40:07Left at home after this one today.
- 40:10There's a foul ball down the left field line.
- 40:17And 46 have been played on the road.
- 40:22Now we've got 35 to play away from Ridley Field.
- 40:25And here is strike three on Steve Anabaris.
- 40:29So they're two gone.
- 40:31Bases empty for Manny Creo.
- 40:37Manny hitting 297.
- 40:40Two put down in the series with a run batted in.
- 40:43He has five home runs.
- 40:45Forty-three runs batted in.
- 40:48In case you just joined us, a ball game started pretty much the same.
- 40:51A ball game started pretty much on time.
- 40:54There's a swing, a little number of foul on the third-base side.
- 40:58But there's been a lot of action.
- 40:59The Reds batted around in the top of the first inning.
- 41:02They had three home runs.
- 41:04Deek Rose, to lead off the ball game.
- 41:06Johnny Bench with two men on.
- 41:07Mike Plum with a man on.
- 41:10And the Cubs, after a double at a walks off, Billy Buckner shaved that lead in half with his third home of the year.
- 41:16Bobby Mercer followed that one with an opposite field home run.
- 41:20Now they're two gone, and that pitch is high.
- 41:22Ball one, strike one to Manny Creo.
- 41:24And Dale Murray's first major league start.
- 41:27Bottom of the first with two away, one-one pitch.
- 41:30Very high.
- 41:31Ball two, strike one.
- 41:41Thickfella tucks the glove under his arm, revs up the ball, touches the rise and back for a moment or two, drops it.
- 41:48Lyons back up on the hill to get his sign.
- 41:51Creo, well away from the plate, end up in the batter's box, two-one delivery.
- 41:55Swung on, bouncing ball to Concepcion on the shortstop on the second half.
- 41:59And the Cubs are retired in the first inning.
- 42:03But four runs on three base hits, two of them homers.
- 42:08Nobody left on, at the end of the one, a shmay beat, quite a day before it's all over.
- 42:14Sensei, six of the Cubs' four.

- 43:16The five home runs at Friendly Field in this one inning,
- 43:29it's not a new Major League record.
- 43:32It is the 13th time that it has been done in the Major League.
- 43:40Last time in the National League, August of 1970.
- 43:45Pirates hit three and the Atlantibraze two in one inning.
- 43:52Pete Rose, who started the fireworks with a homer, steps in, swings,
- 43:55fouls a fastball out of play, both strike one-ton.
- 44:02Welcome here today to Herb Lofman, advertising agency executive.
- 44:08Bobby Kaufman, Roberta Kaufman, there's a swing, ground ball to Manny Creel.
- 44:13He's got it.
- 44:14Pete Rose, out, looking up the second inning.
- 44:18Ken Griffey will be the hitter.
- 44:21He's singled into right field, got the second, a Morgan's infield hit.
- 44:26After a posture struck out, Johnny Vance, one of his 23rd homer of the year.
- 44:42Let's see if Burr can hold him and check for a while.
- 44:45Base is empty.
- 44:47First pitch, Griffey swings, a drive in the right field.
- 44:49Burr, coming on, he's got it.
- 44:51Shoulder high, catch on the line drive, and he hit a bullet.
- 44:56Two guard.
- 44:58Morgan with an infield single.
- 45:00Now the run scored, steps in.
- 45:03Let me note here that this Mr. John Conarkey, Conarkey,
- 45:09who must be the proudest father at the ballgame today, his birthday,
- 45:13and also that of his daughter, Janie, who's 16, and his oldest son, Jack, who's 14,
- 45:20and got their mother along with her and the sisters.
- 45:241-0 pitch.
- 45:26Strike called in the outside corner, 1-1.
- 45:31They got the whole family, little Aaron is 5, Edmund is 9, Sheila is 7.
- 45:37She had her birthday yesterday, Sheila did, 2-1 pitch, half a missing.
- 45:43Two youngest were 4-2.
- 45:47Had to leave at home.
- 45:50There's a strike, fastball, right at the letters, 2-2.
- 45:59Two-two delivery.
- 46:01Gets under the fastball, Morgan fouls it back.
- 46:09Conarkey tells us through all those children, got a little smarts.
- 46:16They'll use the Cubs' new phone number for tickets and charge it to Dad's Visa card.
- 46:22There's the ball, ball three, strike two.
- 46:26Celebrate their birthday.
- 46:31Burruss's 3-2 pitch.
- 46:33Morgan swings, a drive into center field, Morales is there, he's got it.
- 46:39What a contrast.
- 46:40First inning, they bat around, score six runs.
- 46:43And then setting a ground out, a hard liner off the bat at Rippey.
- 46:48And a drive to Morales in center field so they go down in order.
- 46:52And the Cubs, who got four runs on a pair of homers in the bottom of the first inning,
- 46:58will have Minterwall burst in the top of the batting order up, Sensi leading 6-4.
- 47:09When you brew a beer once, you've got a good beer.
- 47:13But when you brew a beer twice, you've got a great light beer.
- 47:18A great light beer called Old Style from God's country.
- 47:25Heilman's Old Style is brewed in a traditional old world way called poisoning.
- 47:32Poisoning is the most natural way to brew beer and the most expensive.
- 47:37Most expensive because it takes more time.
- 47:41But Heilman has been brewing beer this way since we first opened our doors back in 1853.
- 47:49Poisoning is what makes Old Style the great light beer it is today.
- 47:54Taste the difference poisoning makes.
- 47:57Try Old Style.
- 47:59Pure brewed in God's country.
- 48:05G. Heilman Brewing Company, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
- 48:23Just giving a probable pitching assignment tomorrow night at Houston.
- 48:28Their net worth their time tomorrow, 7.30. And 15 minutes prior to that,
- 48:35Lou and I will be on the talk a little baseball with you tomorrow evening.
- 48:38Rick Ruschel and Joe Neekrow are the probable pitchers at the Astrodome tomorrow night.
- 48:46George Minterwall stepping in against Dale Murray.
- 48:50George hitting 250. Picks the first pitch outside ball one.
- 48:55Yes, a half a dozen homers driven in 29 runs for the year, one in the series.
- 49:02They're going to correct it and move Bonham in there where we thought he should be.
- 49:06And Ruschel will go Saturday.
- 49:09Bonham tomorrow night.
- 49:15One-one pitch. Sexy swing at a fastball. In too close.
- 49:26Ball two, strike one on George Minterwall leading off the bottom of the second.
- 49:31There's a sinker low, three and one.
- 49:37Thurman Munson of the Aggies got his 14th homer of the year in the bottom of the third inning.
- 49:44That's the one hundredth of his career.
- 49:46And the Yankees now are leading the Orioles, three to one in the bottom of the third.
- 49:55Milwaukee bust and no score, bottom of the second.
- 50:01And at about 45 minutes the Phillies and the Dodgers will be getting underway.
- 50:05There's a swing, deep ride. That one's gone. Way, way back to the very wall.
- 50:11Over the wall, out of the ballpark.
- 50:14Six to five, victory.
- 50:34Let's try to bury the day low and we have a home run for us.
- 50:37Never mind a hit and run, just the home run.
- 50:45Dale Murray.
- 50:49Played one in and Burris way over the left center field of bleachers, over the wall out on the three.
- 50:57Burris takes the ball.
- 50:59Chucks he's swing the ball at his back, skip foul into the seats in the first base side.
- 51:05Big George, his seventh homer of the year.
- 51:12Fastball swung on, fouled it right near the plate and he wound up staggering in front of home plate for the cut he took.
- 51:18Ball one, strike two.
- 51:26Wildland.
- 51:29And we're only in the bottom of the second inning.
- 51:32With the bases empty and nobody out.
- 51:35Bourbon again throwing in the Cincinnati bullpen.
- 51:38Windup, Murray's next pitch swung on.
- 51:40There's a fly ball dropping out into the left field area and it's in for a base hit.
- 51:44Burris going to try for two. He is in with a double.
- 51:53That's the tying run at second base with nobody out.
- 52:01Burris' second double of the year out of eight base hits.
- 52:08Dumped one in a shallow left field.
- 52:11Of course with this wind blowing out, hotfielders are deep for just about everybody.
- 52:16Sparky Anderson, the silver-hired skipper, just now crosses the first base line, make sure he doesn't touch it.
- 52:24And he's going to bring in Pedro Bourbon right now.
- 52:29The Reds with six runs, six hits.
- 52:32The Cubs, five runs, five hits.
- 52:36And the tying run in scoring position with nobody out in the bottom of the second inning.
- 52:41Let's take time out for this message.
- 52:43Some people only sell paint. True Value Hardware stores make it.
- 52:47And who knows more about paint than the manufacturer.
- 52:50True Test Paint from True Value Hardware stores has become one of the nation's best known, fastest growing brands.
- 52:57True Test Paint like weather-all acrylic latex house paint.
- 53:01It applies like a latex, wears like an oil base, and protects your home from all kinds of weather.
- 53:07And True Test Easy Care latex flat enamel with a hard enamel finish.
- 53:12Most stains just wash away, so you won't have to repaint as often.
- 53:16Yet it still has the soft look that complements any room in your home.
- 53:20And Easy Care has earned the good housekeeping seal.
- 53:24Easy Care and weather-all are among the many True Test paints made in True Value Hardware stores' own factories.
- 53:31And they are among the most efficient and modern paint factories in the paint industry.
- 53:36So when you want quality and real paint know-how, go to the paint maker.
- 53:40You're participating in True Value Hardware store because True Value is more than just a name.
- 53:46It's their way of doing business.
- 53:54Bob Bowen getting in his warm-up toss.
- 53:57A little while ago, Dick Dozer, I believe it was Dick Dozer, the Tribune, making the announcement that the five home runs
- 54:03and the first inning by these two ball clubs tied a Major League record for homers in one inning.
- 54:10Western Union now reports over here from Regley Field that those home runs are the most hit in one inning required in the National League.
- 54:25Well, they'll get it straightened out.
- 54:26Well, that's just National League now.
- 54:28He said Major League.
- 54:29No, he also said the National League.
- 54:31He gave a record for that.
- 54:32Yeah, National League Pittsburgh, three, Atlanta, two, and August 1st, 1970.
- 54:40Go back to the books for that one.
- 54:43Well, my eyes are too red to read any books today.
- 54:53Maybe they'll hit even more before it's over with.
- 54:55Like there comes five in an inning, since there may be only two with the bases empty.
- 55:00Yvonne DeJesus against Bourbon.
- 55:05Makes him hit the ball one strike one count on him.
- 55:08Pedro, five and four for the year with seven saves.
- 55:13Kex delivers.
- 55:14Breaking ball low.
- 55:15Ball two, strike one.
- 55:16He wouldn't chase that curve ball low.
- 55:19That's the pitcher scuttling him into a lot of trouble lately.
- 55:23He opened up the first inning with a double off the wall in left field.
- 55:27Slaps a fly ball down the right field line, the wind pushing it, pushing it,
- 55:32and it drops still out of the reach of the right fielder, Griffey.
- 55:37The last couple of days, the wind blowing in would have pushed that ball well back into the boxes.
- 55:42This time it kept it from going in there, but it was still foul out of play.
- 55:51And he's still searching the record books.
- 56:01Two-two pitch.
- 56:03Slaps the ground ball to the first baseman.
- 56:05It will advance first to third.
- 56:06He's got the ball.
- 56:07Saved the first base.
- 56:09Mike Brown had a very easy play on a little easy ground ball that Geraint Meary could have handled.
- 56:18They just plain dropped it.
- 56:20He can't believe it himself.
- 56:23Looks at the glove as though it bequeathed.
- 56:27Had it right in the pocket.
- 56:28Started up the line.
- 56:29Whoops, putted it out.
- 56:31Went over into foul territory.
- 56:33The pitcher wasn't over to take the throw.
- 56:35He tried to win the race to the bag himself, just a fraction of a second too late.
- 56:43More ball.
- 56:44Bittner looks out of the scoreboard and now his runners at first and third with nobody out.
- 56:52Six to five, Cincy and Bittner stepping in.
- 56:56Here's the pitch.
- 56:57Low ball but.
- 57:01And there, running to Jesus' reach.
- 57:09That's the pitch.
- 57:14Swung out, base hit, center field.
- 57:15Burton's got a score.
- 57:16The tying run to Jesus will stop at second.
- 57:17It's six to six in the bottom of the second inning.
- 57:21Bittner with his 40-second run batted into the air.
- 57:25Lines wanted to center field.
- 57:36Bring out the pocket calculators.
- 57:38We may need it before the afternoon is over.
- 57:47Runners at first and second for Bill Buckner, who in this situation in the first inning,
- 57:53brought up his third homer of the year.
- 57:56The pitch he'll take gets a strike.
- 58:06So Murray at his first major league start will not get a win.
- 58:10The game is tied.
- 58:14And more ball.
- 58:15Here's the swing and a deep drive to the right fielder, Ken Grapey.
- 58:18He'll get under to Asus tagging.
- 58:20He's going to third.
- 58:22And the fill cut off by Concepcion under the back.
- 58:25Runners at first and third, one away.
- 58:33And Murray cannot get a win, even though he had a six to nothing lead before he threw
- 58:37the first pitch of the afternoon on behalf of the Cincinnati Reds.
- 58:43And the crowd and the beauty still coming into the ballpark.
- 58:51Bobby Mercer got his 15th homer of the year following Buckner's three-run shot in the
- 58:58first inning.
- 58:59And he steps in.
- 59:02Go-ahead run to Asus at third.
- 59:04Bittner over at first base with one away.
- 59:10Barbone's first pitch, breaking ball for a strike.
- 59:13The Asus scampers back to third.
- 59:16As Johnny Bench had cocked the arm, Buckner was going to fire one down at third base.
- 59:24There's a light-up swing on.
- 59:25Ground ball to Morgan.
- 59:26Waits, gets it, throws to second.
- 59:27Relay.
- 59:28No relay.
- 59:29Bittner went flying in to break up any thoughts that Dave Concepcion might have had about
- 59:36attempting a relay on a slowly hit ground ball to Morgan.
- 59:40The Cubs have taken the lead.
- 59:44But Bobby Mercer with his 60-second run by the end of the year, he's on at first base
- 59:52on a field of choice.
- 59:53That run charged against Barbone and Jerry Morales stepped in with two-guard.
- 1:00:07Popped up to Mike Lom, the first baseman in the first inning for the first half.
- 1:00:18After a double, a walk, a free run homer by Buckner and a solo shot by Bobby Mercer.
- 1:00:23It's a strike on the inside corner.
- 1:00:26Park Ridge, Park District.
- 1:00:29Out here congratulating the Cubs today.
- 1:00:32They've got 250 boys and girls from their fine program in Park Ridge.
- 1:00:39I never expected to see this, I know.
- 1:00:43Boy, what fun it is, particularly for kids, there's a swing and a foul back out of play
- 1:00:50when those baseballs start flying out of the ballpark, particularly those off the bats
- 1:00:55of the Cubs.
- 1:00:58They've got to love it.
- 1:00:59They remember each one of them.
- 1:01:05Barbone out in front of Morales.
- 1:01:08Next pitch, takes.
- 1:01:09Yes, misses.
- 1:01:10Little high, ball too selective.
- 1:01:14Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau here with Dale, all Richard Engineer and Jack Menevich, our producer.
- 1:01:18Don't go away.
- 1:01:20Seven to six Cubs.
- 1:01:22Bottom of the second, each team with a half and a zin hits the swing on foul sharply back to the backstop,
- 1:01:27and it's two and two.
- 1:01:37Group of 51 from the Glenview Naval Air Station here today.
- 1:01:44Sidearm fastball swung on and missed for strike three.
- 1:01:51Barbone's first strike out is coming on here in the second in relief,
- 1:01:56but the Cubs with three runs in the second inning, one Cincinnati error,
- 1:02:03three base hits, putting Mineral, seventh home of the year.
- 1:02:10One man left in the bases.
- 1:02:13Well, we've got two full innings in already.
- 1:02:16So far, the Cubs seven runs, six hits.
- 1:02:19The Reds six runs, six hits.
- 1:02:22Well, friends, now you can water your lawn without watering your house, your driveway, and your guests.
- 1:02:28Just go to your two-by-a-hardware store, get a multi-pattern lawn sprinkler.
- 1:02:32That's designed to keep the water on your lawn and not on your house.
- 1:02:35Or your friends, like a Nelson Poppy three-arm sprinkler.
- 1:02:39It whirls water in a square so you can water right up to the edge of your yard
- 1:02:43without sprinkling the sidewalk or the house.
- 1:02:46Two-by-a-hardware stores also have the Nelson Beta impulse sprinkler.
- 1:02:50It has more sprinkling patterns than the standard revolving models,
- 1:02:54so it gets those hard-to-reach spots without wasting water on the house.
- 1:02:58Now you can water your lawn, too, without watering your house and guests.
- 1:03:02Get Nelson's multi-pattern lawn sprinkler at participating two-by-a-hardware stores.
- 1:03:08Two-by-a-hardware is more than just a name. It's a way of doing business that's each two-by-you.
- 1:03:32Nothing like a little fun and excitement at the ball yard.
- 1:03:37We've had it up already.
- 1:03:40Alas, a lot of fans the whole day.
- 1:03:43It's a long way to go on this one.
- 1:03:45That's wide, and here's Lou Boudreau.
- 1:03:49Seven to six Cubs, and we're just starting the third inning.
- 1:03:54LeBouin, the hitter.
- 1:03:58Burris's first pitch.
- 1:04:00LeBouin swings and lines a base hit over the leaping trio's head in the right center.
- 1:04:06The only thing I can say about today's game, I'm very happy that we have last bats.
- 1:04:12That's going to be very important.
- 1:04:14And for the office pools with 13 and 15 runs in your pocket, hold on.
- 1:04:21One never knows.
- 1:04:23Today is a day for the bullpen.
- 1:04:31Foster singles to right center, and now here's Bench.
- 1:04:40Bench hit a home run, a line drive into the catwalk in left field.
- 1:04:47Foster on first.
- 1:04:51Burris into the stretch. Here's the pitch.
- 1:04:53Outside, ball one.
- 1:04:57Let's pause five seconds for station identification.
- 1:04:59This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 1:05:03WGN Radio Chicago. It's 82 at midway, 81 in the lakefront.
- 1:05:08Bench takes a strike, a sidearm curveball over the outside corner.
- 1:05:13One and one to count.
- 1:05:17Donnie Moore starts loosening up to the Cubs bullpen.
- 1:05:22Here's a toss to first base.
- 1:05:24Foster hadn't taken his lead yet when Burris threw over to Buckner.
- 1:05:31Now we're set to pitch to Bench.
- 1:05:33High curveball taken by Donnie, and it's two and one.
- 1:05:42Six home runs have been hit in this ballgame thus far.
- 1:05:48Two and one pitch, outside, ball three.
- 1:05:52Three and one to Bench.
- 1:05:56Geronimo, due up next.
- 1:05:59Foster opened up the inning, getting the seventh Cincinnati in off Burris.
- 1:06:04Here's a three and one pitch to Johnny Bench.
- 1:06:08Swing and a miss. Three and two.
- 1:06:19Nobody out, third inning.
- 1:06:26Burris taking a little time now.
- 1:06:30On the mound, tosses to first base, and Foster once again had one foot on the bag.
- 1:06:40The pitch, outside, ball four.
- 1:06:44That moves Foster to second base.
- 1:06:47That is the first walk by Burris, and Herman Franks is coming out of the dugout.
- 1:07:04Herman Franks motions to Donnie Moore.
- 1:07:07So while Donnie Moore is coming in to loosen up, let's pause for this message.
- 1:07:14Lawns come in many shapes and sizes, so do lawn chief mowers.
- 1:07:18From true value hardware stores, they offer a complete line of gas and electric powered mowers
- 1:07:23and heavy duty lawn tractors in sizes for every type of lawn,
- 1:07:28from a small city lot to a sprawling country estate.
- 1:07:31For average sized lawns, they offer rotary mowers and self propelled models
- 1:07:35with 18 to 22 inch cutting widths, plus a high wheel mower for rough bumpy areas,
- 1:07:41and a rear bagger model that mows easily in narrow places.
- 1:07:45To cut big lawns down to size, you'll find lawn chief riding mowers and heavy duty tractors
- 1:07:50with 25 to 36 inch cutting widths, forward and reverse speeds, and many other features.
- 1:07:56True value hardware stores own their lawn chief mower factory,
- 1:08:01where they design and manufacture their lawn chief mowers to exacting standards
- 1:08:05with performance, convenience, and user safety in mind.
- 1:08:09So no matter what size lawn you own, you'll find a matching lawn chief mower,
- 1:08:13exclusively at participating true value hardware stores.
- 1:08:18They change their program.
- 1:08:23Donnie Moore has a 3.55 burn run average. He's 1-3 lost one. This is his 20th game.
- 1:08:30He's pitched 38 innings, 37 hits, 20 runs. He's walked 13 while striking out 27.
- 1:08:41Foster opened up the inning with a single, bench walked, and now Geronimo will face Donnie Moore
- 1:08:48with the Cubs leading 7-6 who are in the third inning.
- 1:08:52This game is an hour old right now.
- 1:08:55Other action in the American League, the Boston Red Sox came up with six runs
- 1:09:01in the third inning. They lead Milwaukee 7-0.
- 1:09:06New York Yankees 5, Baltimore 1 at the end of 4.
- 1:09:12Let me talk about that, what I was describing yesterday,
- 1:09:17when Sparky Anderson came out and was arguing with Paul Pryor on one pitch.
- 1:09:22I said I misinterpreted the rules that he has to leave or the pitcher has to leave.
- 1:09:26That was the rule, but they changed that rule.
- 1:09:30Anderson also thought that was the rule and would not call in his pitcher
- 1:09:35and then told Pryor that he is protesting the game.
- 1:09:39That's when Pryor went to the other two umpires.
- 1:09:42But then Harvey told Sparky Anderson that that rule had been changed
- 1:09:48and then Sparky said yes, I had forgotten about it so the protest was called off.
- 1:09:53And Pryor also did call in the pitcher, Sparky Anderson did not.
- 1:09:57Here's a swing, a line drive, base hit to right field.
- 1:10:00The tying run will score.
- 1:10:02Mercer cuts off that ball, gets it into the relay man to hold Bench to third base.
- 1:10:08So Geronimo didn't wait.
- 1:10:10The first pitch thrown to him by Moore, he doubles down the right field line.
- 1:10:16This game is all tied up 7-7.
- 1:10:19Cincinnati has runners on second and third, nobody out in the third inning.
- 1:10:28And now Concepcion is going to bat.
- 1:10:33Thirty-five RBIs for Geronimo.
- 1:10:41And he hits for Cincinnati in the brand new ball game, 7-7.
- 1:10:54Donnie Moore gets his side, cup infield, the right side halfway.
- 1:11:00Swing, a line drive, base hit over Trillo's head.
- 1:11:03Two more runs will score.
- 1:11:06It's now 9-7 Cincinnati as Concepcion drives in his 35th and 36th RBI of the season.
- 1:11:20One of those runs charged to Moore.
- 1:11:25So Burris in two complete innings and two men in the third allowed eight runs, seven hits,
- 1:11:33struck out two and walked one.
- 1:11:36Moore has faced two men.
- 1:11:38He's allowed a double and a single.
- 1:11:43Now here's Lumet bat, hit a two-run home run in the first inning.
- 1:11:51Paul Rushell now starts warming up for the Cubs.
- 1:12:00Concepcion with a tremendous lead at first base, and Moore sees that and tosses over that to first to hold him close to the bag.
- 1:12:09Concepcion on, has 21 stolen bases.
- 1:12:15The stretch and the pitch.
- 1:12:17Swing, a ground ball to Trillo's left, gloves it, turns, fires it to Asus to force Concepcion at second base, one out.
- 1:12:28Bourbon will be the hitter.
- 1:12:39Bourbon has four for 13.
- 1:12:46Lead has changed hands again.
- 1:12:50Cincinnati leading six and nothing at the end of one.
- 1:12:54Should be six to four, I should say.
- 1:12:56Cubs taking the lead seven to six at the end of two, and now in the top of the third, Cincinnati has regained the lead.
- 1:13:03Bourbon was going to bunt but takes a strike outside.
- 1:13:06Corner, strike one.
- 1:13:15Antivirus in at third expecting a sacrifice.
- 1:13:21There's the bunt but it's fouled down the first base line.
- 1:13:37One out here in the third inning.
- 1:13:44Lava on first base.
- 1:13:47Moore in relief of Burrus into the stretch.
- 1:13:51Here's the pitch, the bunt down the first base line, and he is out.
- 1:13:54He was hit by the ball so the runner at second will have to return to first base, and Sparky's going to argue.
- 1:14:04The ball came up and hit the batter so he's out for interference, and Lum has to return to first base.
- 1:14:15Anderson asking Olson, late umpire, to describe it.
- 1:14:25He does. Lum returns to first and now with two outs and credit Middlerwall, I guess, with the putout.
- 1:14:33He was the closest one to the batter.
- 1:14:37And here's Pete Rose.
- 1:14:40So a little of everything today at Wrigley Field.
- 1:14:43The long ball, Texas Lakers airs, and now it interferes.
- 1:14:55Two outs, Rose the hitter.
- 1:14:59Here's the, they give the out to three.
- 1:15:04They give the out to Buckner.
- 1:15:08Swing and a miss by Rose on the first pitch.
- 1:15:12Lumber is ready. Rose to first, Lum gets back safely.
- 1:15:21Cincinnati with nine runs, nine hits. Cubs seven runs, six hits.
- 1:15:27Swing and a miss on a good fastball outside.
- 1:15:31Two strikes on Rose.
- 1:15:34Two outs.
- 1:15:39And ready, nine, Cubs seven.
- 1:15:44The pitch. Inside fastball ball, one strike two.
- 1:15:56Middler and left today, for Allison, center, Merson, right.
- 1:16:00Here's the one and two pitch to Rose.
- 1:16:03Oh, just below his knee, ball two, strike two.
- 1:16:14Rose and home run and a ground out.
- 1:16:19The pitch out its way, swing and a tap foul.
- 1:16:24Two and two to count.
- 1:16:35Both starting pitchers in the clubhouse.
- 1:16:42Here's the two and two pitch. Instead he throws the first and Lum gets back safely.
- 1:16:52Swing and a miss by Lumber. Lumber is ready. He sits.
- 1:16:56Throws the first again and Lum gets back safely.
- 1:17:05Rose in that crouch at the plate. Here's the pitch.
- 1:17:09Low ball three. Three and two on Pete Rose.
- 1:17:21Low ball off Pete Rose's bat yesterday.
- 1:17:23There goes the runner. Here's the swing.
- 1:17:25A base hit through the middle of the diamond in the center field.
- 1:17:28And Lum will go to third as Morales gets that ball in quickly.
- 1:17:33As I was mentioning, Rose fouled the ball down the left field line yesterday
- 1:17:37and it hit a youngster in the cheek, right adjacent to the nose.
- 1:17:44The youngster had a bloody nose and a severe painfully swollen cheek, loosened teeth.
- 1:17:56And today Pete Rose signed the baseball for that youngster in the name of,
- 1:18:01I believe, Paul Franks in Skokie, Illinois.
- 1:18:05And I have it in my possession and we'll get it over to young Franks as soon as possible.
- 1:18:13Rose fell very badly about it, but could do nothing about it, of course.
- 1:18:17Swing, a line drive, base hit to center field by Griffey.
- 1:18:26Boy, let me tell you, those base hits look like they're coming out of cannons at the plate.
- 1:18:31Griffey drives in a run. Lum scores the fourth one of the inning.
- 1:18:36It's now 10 to 7 in favor of Cincinnati, and it doesn't look like rain.
- 1:18:46Rose stops at second.
- 1:18:54Buckeye, in an amount, talking to Moore.
- 1:19:00Rose is on second. Griffey is on first.
- 1:19:04The Reds have batted a round here in the third inning.
- 1:19:09They have scored four runs on five hits in the inning.
- 1:19:19Morgan, the hitter, he has one for two.
- 1:19:22The pitch, swing, a line drive into the bullpen.
- 1:19:26Oh, they scattered down there in that bullpen. Strike one.
- 1:19:38Everyone in the Cincinnati lineup except Bourbon has at least one base hit.
- 1:19:47Low curve ball, one and one to count.
- 1:19:5310 to 7, Cincinnati.
- 1:19:59Moore in relief, into the stretch.
- 1:20:02Here's the pitch to Morgan. Passed Paul Slinger, ground ball, it's foul.
- 1:20:07Down the first base line. Got past Buckner, but just foul.
- 1:20:19The line drive over that bag, such as happened last night at Kamiski Park,
- 1:20:23is where the ball is unless it's touched by the infielder.
- 1:20:28Last night Rodriguez crossed the foul line to touch a line drive,
- 1:20:33and the ball rebounded into third territory, but it was a foul ball.
- 1:20:36Here's a pop-up over Trio's head.
- 1:20:40Behind second, he's under it, backs up, he has it.
- 1:20:44But the Reds send nine men to the plate, scoring four times.
- 1:20:54Five hits. Two men left on bases.
- 1:21:01So at the end of two and a half minutes of play, at Cincinnati, 10, Cubs, 7.
- 1:21:10Things can be beautiful, and beautiful furniture is to be had,
- 1:21:13and you've got the money in the bank.
- 1:21:15But even if the furniture is there when the cash isn't,

- 1:22:11General Finance also has an office in Munderland.
- 1:22:17Senator, we're at the Chicago area.
- 1:22:23They just made an announcement in the press box that that hit by Pete Rose was his 2,884th hit.
- 1:22:31And he's 20th now on the all-career list of base hits.
- 1:22:37Zach Wheat.
- 1:22:40He's supplanted Zach Wheat, 20th.
- 1:22:45And he leads career base hits for switch hitters.
- 1:22:53Antavarus fouls off the first pitch, strike one.
- 1:22:58Cincinnati 10 comes 7.
- 1:23:02Here's a swing and a pop-up down the left field line.
- 1:23:05Rose after it.
- 1:23:06The ball is carrying out of play as it hits the first, in the first roll.
- 1:23:12Pete grabs that ball, hands it back, tosses it back into the stand.
- 1:23:23We have 17 runs in this ball game by both clubs.
- 1:23:2717 hits.
- 1:23:2811 by Cincinnati, 6 hits by the Cubs.
- 1:23:32Here's a swing and a miss.
- 1:23:34Antavarus couldn't hold back.
- 1:23:36He strikes out.
- 1:23:47Joe, who grounded out the first time, is back.
- 1:23:58First pitch.
- 1:24:00Outside, ball one.
- 1:24:10Here's a ball outside and low.
- 1:24:12Instead of that ball hitting low bone, it was explained by a play by Umparosa that number one,
- 1:24:19he crossed over the plate to Bunnett, and number two, he was running inside the baseline.
- 1:24:29So the catcher gets the put out.
- 1:24:33Ball two, strike one.
- 1:24:39It's a trio.
- 1:24:40One pitch, inside, ball three, strike one.
- 1:24:53Three and one pitch on its way, inside, ball four.
- 1:25:00And Middowall, who hit a tremendous home run, his first time at bat.
- 1:25:13Trio on first.
- 1:25:18Middowall steps in the batter's box.
- 1:25:20Paul Ruschel is ready.
- 1:25:23He was warming up at the top of the inning.
- 1:25:26Line drive right to Rose. Go to first, not in time.
- 1:25:31Middowall lines that ball right to Pete Rose at third base for the second out in the inning.
- 1:25:43Donnie Moore is going to hit for himself.
- 1:25:51So in the third inning with Cincinnati leading ten to seven.
- 1:25:57Six home runs have been hit thus far in this ball game.
- 1:26:03First pitch is a ball outside to Donnie.
- 1:26:06That's left-handed even though he fires right in.
- 1:26:09Here's one swing.
- 1:26:10He's the center fielder way back off the wall.
- 1:26:14Here comes Trio around third.
- 1:26:16He's going to score.
- 1:26:18Here's Donnie Moore going in the third with a triple.
- 1:26:22Donnie Moore triples off the wall in center field, driving in Trio.
- 1:26:30Now the score is ten to eight.
- 1:26:33Moore is on third.
- 1:26:36And DeJesus, the hitter.
- 1:26:41Moore, Moore, that's his second hit.
- 1:26:44First triple of the year.
- 1:26:46First RBI of the year.
- 1:26:52That ball didn't lack from going on to the AstroTurf by very much, about three feet, four feet.
- 1:27:01Now here's DeJesus.
- 1:27:03Two outs.
- 1:27:04Big run if we can pick it up from third base.
- 1:27:07Curve ball for a strike taken by DeJesus.
- 1:27:17The pitch, curve ball, tap, foul.
- 1:27:21Into the Cubs dugout.
- 1:27:250-2 on DeJesus.
- 1:27:28He doubled in the first inning.
- 1:27:30Tap on Lums there in the second.
- 1:27:40Bourbon into the windup.
- 1:27:44Here's the pitch outside ball one.
- 1:27:47This is perhaps one of the earliest that Bourbon has ever entered a ball game in relief.
- 1:27:54Entered it in the second inning.
- 1:27:57The pitch.
- 1:27:59He's making a miss.
- 1:28:00He fouled it right into the glove of Bench.
- 1:28:04In the third inning the Cubs pick up one run, one hit, one man left on base.
- 1:28:10At the end of three complete innings of play, Cincinnati 10, Cubs 8.
- 1:28:16See, if you ever come across a 1909 Chalmers Tour about, a 1910 Owen or 1915 Nevada truck,
- 1:28:24let Mr. Herra of Reno, Nevada know about it.
- 1:28:26He needs those three models to complete his collection of vintage cars.
- 1:28:30Even without them, the Guinness Book of World Records says Herra's 1,700 autos are worth 4 million bucks.
- 1:28:36And that makes it the greatest automobile collection of all time.
- 1:28:41There's another great collection of cars right here in Libertyville, Illinois.
- 1:28:45It's Wiles' collection of brand new six-cylinder Oldsmobiles.
- 1:28:49Choose from 150 gas-saving six-cylinder Starfires, Omegas, Cutlasses, and 88s.
- 1:28:55They're equipped in every way imaginable.
- 1:28:57Some of these sixes have nothing but the bare necessities, and some have everything from full power to stereo.
- 1:29:03In other words, you're sure to find a six-cylinder Oldsmobile equipped just the way you want it
- 1:29:08at the world's largest Oldsmobile dealer, Wiles' Olds in Libertyville.
- 1:29:12You'll save when you buy it, save when you drive it.
- 1:29:15So come out and see Wiles' six-cylinder collection today.
- 1:29:19Top of the fourth inning for Cincinnati.
- 1:29:25Foster will lead off, and he led off the third inning by singling in the right center.
- 1:29:32And when the inning had closed out, the Reds had batted around and scored four runs.
- 1:29:39If you like a Wiles' scoring game with a lot of hits, a lot of running, this is it.
- 1:29:59Now Foster steps in the batter's box.
- 1:30:02Moore on the mound, and it is wind up.
- 1:30:10Foster stepped out of the batter's box for just a moment.
- 1:30:13Now we're set. Here's the first pitch.
- 1:30:16Fast ball, a swing, and a line drive.
- 1:30:18They sit into left field. They're picking on Moore's first pitch.
- 1:30:24Foster now has two for three in his ball game.
- 1:30:28That is the 12th hit for Cincinnati.
- 1:30:33Here's Bench. Three-run home run in the first inning.
- 1:30:39Walked in the third.
- 1:30:42Cincinnati with six in the first.
- 1:30:55They rested in the second.
- 1:30:57Came back with four in the third.
- 1:31:00First pitch to Johnny Bench.
- 1:31:03Low, ball one.
- 1:31:04The Cubs scored four in the first, three in the second, and one in the third.
- 1:31:09We haven't batted yet in the fourth.
- 1:31:14The ball one pitch.
- 1:31:16There's a ball low outside.
- 1:31:19Ball two, no strikes to Johnny Bench.
- 1:31:22Foster on first base, nobody out.
- 1:31:30Moore into the stretch.
- 1:31:33A pitch.
- 1:31:35Low, ball three.
- 1:31:38Ball three and no strikes to Johnny Bench.
- 1:31:41And this is the kind of day that they may give Johnny the green light on this pitch.
- 1:31:54Here's the ball getting away from the Cubs bullpen as Russell starts warming up again.
- 1:32:07Bench steps back into the batter's box.
- 1:32:16The three and no pitch on its way.
- 1:32:19Strike called right down the middle, and he was taking.
- 1:32:22Three and one now to count.
- 1:32:31Moore sets, checks the runner.
- 1:32:33The pitch, fast ball high above his head, ball four.
- 1:32:41Now time is called.
- 1:32:43Herman Franks walking out from the dugout once again to the mound.
- 1:32:51Looks around at Paul Russell to see if he's ready.
- 1:33:02He is, so Russell's coming in.
- 1:33:05So let's pause for just a moment for this message.
- 1:33:10Some people only sell paint.

- 1:34:06You're participating in true value hardware store.
- 1:34:08Because true value is more than just a name, it's their way of doing business.
- 1:34:17Paul Rushell coming in here.
- 1:34:20See if he can stop these rits.
- 1:34:25Paul Rushell has a 2.61 earned on average.
- 1:34:28He has a record of 4-2.
- 1:34:30This is his 39th game.
- 1:34:35He's pitched 62 in one-third innings.
- 1:34:39Allowed 53 hits.
- 1:34:4220 runs.
- 1:34:4423 walks, five intentional.
- 1:34:47He has struck out 34.
- 1:34:50He's allowed six home runs.
- 1:34:54He's going to face Geronimo here with runners on first and second.
- 1:35:00Nobody out.
- 1:35:02Fourth inning.
- 1:35:05First pitch on its way.
- 1:35:07Swing and a double play ball at trio.
- 1:35:08He goes to DeJesus.
- 1:35:10DeJesus throwing a first.
- 1:35:11A double play.
- 1:35:20And all the Cubs get their 84th double play on the first pitch thrown to Geronimo by Rushell.
- 1:35:31That move fostered a third, but now there are two outs.
- 1:35:39Let's pause five seconds for station identification.
- 1:35:41This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 1:35:45This is the WGN Radio Chicago, one minute until three.
- 1:35:53First pitch to Concepcion, ball one.
- 1:35:57And they want to look at that pit, at that ball I should say.
- 1:36:05Olson gives Paul Rushell the baseball.
- 1:36:12Tough job for the managers today to pick out a man who can stop the opposition.
- 1:36:18The pitch inside, ball two.
- 1:36:23Foster on third base with two outs.
- 1:36:31Paul Rushell, third Cub pitcher, into the lined up the pitch inside, ball three.
- 1:36:41Concepcion looks down to his coach.
- 1:36:44Schuber gets a sign.
- 1:36:47Lum is due up next.
- 1:36:51Three and no pitch is a strike call.
- 1:36:55Three and one now.
- 1:36:58Two outs.
- 1:36:59Cincinnati leads ten to eight.
- 1:37:02The pitch by Rushell, pop foul over the Reds dugout.
- 1:37:09Three and two now on Concepcion.
- 1:37:22Here's a three and two pitch.
- 1:37:24Swing and a ground ball to DeJesus Wright.
- 1:37:26He has it.
- 1:37:27The long throw.
- 1:37:28In time.
- 1:37:31A beautiful play by DeJesus.
- 1:37:33Throwing out to Concepcion.
- 1:37:36Saving that run.
- 1:37:39So Paul Rushell came in and did an outstanding job in retiring the Reds after they had runners on first and second and nobody out.
- 1:37:46In the fourth inning, no runs, one hit.
- 1:37:49One man left on base.
- 1:37:51Cubs coming to bat fourth inning.
- 1:37:53Cincinnati ten, Cubs eight.
- 1:37:57Fans of summer, True Value hardware stores can show you how to wipe out armies of bugs single-handedly with a Hudson Courtless player.
- 1:38:05It takes just a single hand to hold and operate the lightweight Hudson half-gallon Courtless player.
- 1:38:11Its mini-max nozzle adjusts for fine, coarse, or long-range spray and adjusts to reach the underside of leaves.
- 1:38:19The extension helps you reach high branches or into the center of thick shrubbery.
- 1:38:23And the Hudson Courtless player from True Value hardware stores sprays its half-gallon capacity three times on a single overnight charge.
- 1:38:32Now this summer, you can wipe out armies of bugs single-handedly.
- 1:38:37Get the Hudson half-gallon Courtless player from participating True Value hardware stores.
- 1:38:43True Value hardware is more than just a name. It's our way of doing business that means True Value.
- 1:39:03In the fourth inning, the Cubs will send Bittner, Buckner, and Mercer to the plate, trailing by two runs. It's ten to eight.
- 1:39:14Well, we have a group of special school-age children totaling 80 here with their chaperones.
- 1:39:21They represent the South Metropolitan Association for Low Incidents Handicapped,
- 1:39:26a regional public school program serving 55 school districts in the southern suburbs.
- 1:39:34These children enjoying today's ball game.
- 1:39:39Well, they perhaps are not enjoying the score right now, but they're enjoying the action.
- 1:39:50Burrbone's first pitch to Bittner is a strike call.
- 1:40:00It'll be Bittner, Buckner, and Mercer. Cubs trail by two.
- 1:40:06Here's a foul ball off the bat of Bittner. He didn't want to swing. The ball hit the bat, goes foul, strike two.
- 1:40:15The New York Yankees now lead Baltimore seven to one at the end of five and a half.
- 1:40:22Boston leads Milwaukee eight to nothing at the end of six. Swing and a face hit.
- 1:40:30Pass Morgan into right field. I had to hold up for a minute. I didn't know whether Morgan was going to catch up to that ball or not.
- 1:40:38So Bittner gets his second hit of the day.
- 1:40:45And now here's Buckner at bat. He represents the tying run. He had a three-run home run in the first.
- 1:41:04A wild affair here at Wrigley Field. Cincinnati 10, Cubs eight. We're in the fourth inning.
- 1:41:13This game is an hour and a half old already.
- 1:41:18The dinner will be late tonight.
- 1:41:23The stretch, the pitch, curve ball outside, ball one.
- 1:41:30LeBone, the second, Cincinnati red pitcher. Cubs have used three thus far.
- 1:41:39Love playing behind Bittner. There's a strike called and it's one and one on Buckner.
- 1:41:53LeBone is ready. Here's a pitch, a swing and a fly ball deep to left center. But the center fielder Geronimo back on the warning track catches that ball for the out.
- 1:42:04Buckner just couldn't get around on LeBone's fast ball.
- 1:42:11Mercer, the batter. A home run to the opposite field in the first inning.
- 1:42:22Bittner on first. One out now.
- 1:42:30Here's the first pitch to Mercer. Swing and a miss on a low sinker. Strike one.
- 1:42:43LeBone gets a sign from Bench. Checks Bittner at first. The pitch, swing and a base hit in the left center. There goes Bittner around second and he will hold up as Geronimo got in very fast to feel that ball and Bittner wasn't going to take any chances.
- 1:43:00Two runs down. So he stopped at second base.
- 1:43:04So Mercer gets his second hit of the day.
- 1:43:08That's the fourth hit off for Bone.
- 1:43:13And now here's Morales at bat with Cub runners.
- 1:43:17First and second, one out.
- 1:43:22Cincinnati with ten runs, twelve hits.
- 1:43:25The Cubs have eight runs on nine hits.
- 1:43:30First pitch to Morales. Swing and a miss. Strike one.
- 1:43:41LeBone waiting until Morales gets set.
- 1:43:48Now the pitch. Swing and a miss on a sidearm curveball breaking away from Geri. It's 0-2.
- 1:44:04The pitch on its way. Curveball outside. Just missing it. It's one ball, two strikes.
- 1:44:11And Tavarez two up next. Tying run for the Cubs at first base.
- 1:44:18In the person of Mercer, Bittner is on second.
- 1:44:21Here's the pitch to Geri Morales. Outside, ball two.
- 1:44:25Two and two to count.
- 1:44:34Ball two, strike two.
- 1:44:37LeBone checks the base runners. Bittner at second base.
- 1:44:40Mercer is on first. Here's the pitch. High, ball three.
- 1:44:51Ball three, strike two to Geri Morales.
- 1:44:56Bittner takes his lead from second. Here's the pitch. Swing and a line drive.
- 1:45:00Right fielder, Griffey going back on the warning track. Reaches up and makes a one-handed catch.
- 1:45:06Bittner goes back to tag up and reaches third safely.
- 1:45:10Another line drive that was hit deep in the right field. Griffey makes the catch for the out.
- 1:45:19Two outs. It's going to be up to Antavarez. He has struck out twice.
- 1:45:33Bittner now is on third. Mercer is on first.
- 1:45:38First pitch, Antavarez. Swing and a pop up behind second. It could be tough.
- 1:45:43Rose is there. Kosepchon is there. The ball dropped for a big hit.
- 1:45:48And Mercer goes to third.
- 1:45:52There was a tough play. Rose trying to make an over-the-shoulder catch running from the infield.
- 1:46:01Could not make the catch. Kosepchon was playing Antavarez, the left-handed hitter, over towards second base so he couldn't get there in time.
- 1:46:11And the ball went off of Rose as 12 lands in third territory by two feet.
- 1:46:17So it's a base hit for Antavarez.
- 1:46:21Scores Bittner with a Cubs ninth run.
- 1:46:25Sends Mercer to third with a tying run. And here's Trio at bat.
- 1:46:31First pitch. Swing and a line drive. Base hit.
- 1:46:38There goes Antavarez to third. And Mercer scores a tying run.
- 1:46:51A brand new ballgame. The Cubs have fought back from a 6-0 deficit and have tied up the Cincinnati Reds 10-10.
- 1:47:04And we're only in the fourth inning.
- 1:47:08This could be an 18-17 game, you know.
- 1:47:14Here's Bittner-Wall. Home run in the second inning, lined out in the third.
- 1:47:24The pitch. Strike call.
- 1:47:32Antavarez on third. Trio on first.
- 1:47:38Pitch. Live on the center field. Geronimo is there. Clips the glasses down. He has them one handed for the out.
- 1:47:46But the Cubs have fought back. They scored two runs, four hits, two men left on the bases.
- 1:47:53At the end of four, it's 10-10.
- 1:48:01Have you ever turned off the ignition on your car, but the engine keeps running and running and the body shakes and vibrates?
- 1:48:08That's called run-on, and it's caused by post-ignition inside the cylinders.
- 1:48:13When your car keeps running on like this, it's a sign it may need higher octane to perform the way it should.
- 1:48:19Now Standard introduces new Amaco Premium Lead-Free, the higher octane lead-free gasoline with higher octane than typical unleaded gasoline.
- 1:48:28Higher octane than regular leaded gasoline, too. Try a tank full. It could make a difference.
- 1:48:35If you don't have the problem of engine run-on, use Lead-Free Amaco, the Midwest's best-selling lead-free.
- 1:48:41Standard is the lead-free leader, and now Standard offers you two lead-free gasolines.
- 1:48:47New Amaco Premium Lead-Free in the gold pump and famous lead-free Amaco in the blue pump.
- 1:48:52You'll find this choice of lead-free gasolines at your independent Standard oil dealer.
- 1:48:57Because you expect more from a leader.
- 1:49:08Well, it's settling down. After 10 runs in the first inning, and the next three have only been 10.
- 1:49:19You've still got plenty of time to come out and see a lot of action at Wrigley Field today.
- 1:49:26Let me tell you, this is the kind of a game that the kids particularly just have to fall in love with, man-o-man.
- 1:49:32They'll be talking about this one for the next month, and probably right on into the school days.
- 1:49:37They never forget this kind, and I guarantee you they'll remember every come-home line.
- 1:49:43Mike Lung, who homered in the first inning with a man on, reached in a fielder's choice,
- 1:49:49and the third is going to lead off against the Cubs' Paul Ruschel.
- 1:49:55While they have tied a home run by both ball clubs in one inning with five,
- 1:50:01they are nowhere near the major league record for homers in a game by two teams.
- 1:50:07That record is 11.
- 1:50:09First pitch of the ball to the left-handed hitting Lung.
- 1:50:14Ball on the windup. Fast ball, just misses outside. Ball two.
- 1:50:22Everybody except the pitchers on the Reds have at least one hit, and four of them have two hits.
- 1:50:32There's a strike ball, two strike one.
- 1:50:34Pete Rose is a pair, including a homer.
- 1:50:37Rippey has a pair of singles.
- 1:50:40George Foster is a pair of singles.
- 1:50:42Here's the pitch swung out, a drive into center field, and Mike Lung now has his second hit of the day.
- 1:50:49Single into center field.
- 1:50:57Dave Concepcion has a pair of singles.
- 1:51:02And Pedro Borbon loves to swing that bat stepping in.
- 1:51:08Four for 13 for Borbon this year.
- 1:51:19Attaveras anticipating a sacrifice comes up the line.
- 1:51:22Borbon pushes one up to the mound.
- 1:51:25Ruschel has it, goes to second for one.
- 1:51:27The relay, double play.
- 1:51:30Ruschel to the Haysos, the Manny Creos.
- 1:51:36And Mike Lung going in hard, trying to take the Haysos out.
- 1:51:41He couldn't do it.
- 1:51:43And credit Paul Ruschel with a fine play, clubbing the ball just on the first base side in front of the mound.
- 1:51:49Waiting for the Haysos, absorb the impact of the runners sliding in, threw a little high, but Manny Creos,
- 1:51:56fortunately, is barely tall and a long reach, got it in a boarding house.
- 1:52:02So the bases are empty with the Cubs' 85th double play of the year.
- 1:52:07And Pete Rose steps in.
- 1:52:10He triggered the fireworks, leading off the ball game of the homer off Ray Burris.
- 1:52:19Fitcher trying to sacrifice and punks into a double play.
- 1:52:24He takes an air as a strike.
- 1:52:26Andy Olson, the plate up to inspect the ball, he does, keeps it in play.
- 1:52:39All of the windups, sinkers into the dirt, ball one, strike one.
- 1:52:50The Cubs six in the first, four in the third.
- 1:52:56Or the Reds, rather, six in the first and four in the third.
- 1:52:58A foul ball out of play to the left side, faced a good fastball.
- 1:53:03The Cubs responded with four runs in the first inning, three in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth.
- 1:53:13And only 20 runs have been scored so far on 24 base hits.
- 1:53:18They were only in the fifth inning.
- 1:53:24Fitch steps out of the batter's box.
- 1:53:27He is now 20th in the all-time list of major big hitters with total base hits of 2,884.
- 1:53:36I'm sorry, he is tied, Zach Wheat, with that total, 2,884.
- 1:53:43But it all had gone out to Dr. Paul.
- 1:53:46Now George steps back.
- 1:53:47He has one of the home runs today.
- 1:53:52They want a three in the first inning, one, two delivery.
- 1:53:56Swung out, bouncing ball.
- 1:53:57Creo to his right, comes up for him, he's got it, throws the first.
- 1:54:00Got him to retire the side.
- 1:54:02That ball really jumped up in the last half about head high.
- 1:54:08He throws, grounds out to Creo for the second time, and in the fifth inning, no runs, one hit.
- 1:54:14Reds leave nobody on, and the Cubs come to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:54:19Paul Ruschel is still lead off with a score still.
- 1:54:22Since he's 10, the Cubs 10.
- 1:54:24You know there's one kind of ballplayer a manager really likes to have around, and that's the guy who's consistent?
- 1:54:30He's there every day making the plays and getting the hits.
- 1:54:33Well, that's the kind of consistency you get with Heilman's old-style beer.
- 1:54:37You always know you're going to get the same flavor from bottle to bottle, can to can, and case in and case out.
- 1:54:43The reason?
- 1:54:44Well, the folks at G. Heilman Brewing Company are consistently fussy about what goes into this great light beer.
- 1:54:50They select only the choicest hops, the finest grains, and they believe only sparkling, pure Wisconsin spring water is good enough for old-style.
- 1:54:59Water that flows from deep beneath the ground.
- 1:55:02Some folks say all the way from Canada.
- 1:55:04And when it comes to brewing, they still brew old-style the old world way.
- 1:55:09In fact, old-style is one American premium beer that is still fully poisoned, naturally carbonated in the old world way, which means it's pure brewed, double brewed.
- 1:55:20So next time, try the beer that tastes great consistently.
- 1:55:24Try old-style, pure brewed in God's country.
- 1:55:28Paul Russell to lead off.
- 1:55:38The other two pitchers have preceded him today.
- 1:55:42Got base hits.
- 1:55:43Burris a double and scored.
- 1:55:45Donnie Moore crippled in Romero.
- 1:55:48Don't be embarrassed, Paul. Get a hit.
- 1:55:51First pitch to him is a strike.
- 1:55:54Ten to ten score, Bourbon delivers.
- 1:55:58Sidearm, breaking ball, and he tried to hold up and couldn't do it.
- 1:56:01It's a strike.
- 1:56:02Nothing and two.
- 1:56:04Bourbon will come at you about ten different ways.
- 1:56:07Sidearm, three-quarter, overhand, change of speeds.
- 1:56:11There's a lot of breaking pitches and has good fastball.
- 1:56:14There's a fastball, swung on and missed.
- 1:56:16Throws it almost like a good softball pitcher that time.
- 1:56:20A ball, a span, that's strikeout number four for Pedro.
- 1:56:24His third victim, Yvonne DeJesus stepping in,
- 1:56:28doubled and scored on Buckner's three-run homer in the first.
- 1:56:32Reached on an air, first man to face Bourbon when he came on in the second inning,
- 1:56:37and he scored on Bittner's single.
- 1:56:43As his swing and a high flat ball to the center fielder, Geranimo.
- 1:56:47He's under it. Reaches up.
- 1:56:49Loves it, one-handed, and they're two away.
- 1:56:52Here's Bittner, who has walked and, as a pair, singles today,
- 1:56:58and a run batted in and a run scored.
- 1:57:02Kim Dorr, John Murphy, Kim Dorr, Mike Dorr,
- 1:57:07drove 200 miles, didn't mind at all, because they wanted to see the Cubs
- 1:57:12start a ten-game winning streak. Wouldn't that be nice for Iowa?
- 1:57:18And 117 fans from the campus of Illinois, Lions, are here with their guests.
- 1:57:29Their fifth annual trip to Wrigley Field, Bittner takes the first pitch of strike.
- 1:57:40Bourbon and Paul Ruschel, now working against one another in relief.
- 1:57:45Here's the windup. Takes the strike over the outside corner.
- 1:57:49Larry, not too pleased with that call.
- 1:57:54John Tupole, a good Cup fan, and a good car leader,
- 1:58:00whose days may be his swing and a bouncing foul.
- 1:58:04Today, got a grip of Lindale Heights fans with him this afternoon.
- 1:58:16Our good friend John Loftus, helping to see that John Tupole doesn't get lost at Wrigley Field.
- 1:58:23As a strike called, and Bittner can't believe it, he draws a line about three inches away from the plate
- 1:58:30to indicate to Andy Olson, in his judgment, the pitch was outside.
- 1:58:35But only the judgment of Andy Olson counts.
- 1:58:39And Bourbon, with two strikeouts in the fifth inning, puts the Cubs down in order.
- 1:58:43That's the first inning. The Cubs have been shut out.
- 1:58:47So, at the end of five at Wrigley Field, the game's settling down a little bit.
- 1:58:52Rich 10, the Cubs 10.

- 2:00:05Well, the grounds-keeping crew is raked over the infield.
- 2:00:09Let me tell you, it needed it because it's been torn up pretty good with all those spikes
- 2:00:13that have been racing around here this afternoon.
- 2:00:21We've got a crowd, I would judge, about 32, 33,000, maybe a little bit more.
- 2:00:31Ken Griffey, with two hits today, stepping in.
- 2:00:36When all is said and done, the Cubs will still be number one.
- 2:00:39No, Bill Berg did not make that up.
- 2:00:45Two little kids, creating that one around here today.
- 2:00:48First pitch of ball. Griffey takes, there's a strike, a slider on him.
- 2:00:53Ball one, strike one.
- 2:00:56Dilley's did not score at Los Angeles in the top of the first inning.
- 2:01:00Go get them Dodgers.
- 2:01:03Wind up in the 1-1 pitch. Griffey swings and he misses.
- 2:01:08Ball, must have got a piece of it and I think it came off the bare hand of Merwold
- 2:01:13as it dropped right at his feet.
- 2:01:15Didn't want to show that he's hurt at all.
- 2:01:18All right, Bill, we're going to put you in the pool.
- 2:01:21What would you guess would be the total run scored here at Wrigley Field today, Mr. Berg?
- 2:01:27Total runs, we've got 20 now. Up to 28 runs, Vince.
- 2:01:34Look out, there's one high and deep. It is now up to 21. That is gone.
- 2:01:39Way, way back. That one left the ballpark.
- 2:01:46Let me tell you, well that left the park. It has to be at least 430 feet away.
- 2:01:50You know, this is beginning to look like a reenactment of Star Wars.
- 2:01:53Everything is exploding around this place. It's unreal.
- 2:01:56Good Lord, what a shot.
- 2:02:00Griffey's ninth home run of the year.
- 2:02:04It's only his third hit today.
- 2:02:09That one may be in the lake.
- 2:02:13Here's Morgan.
- 2:02:16Checks his swing and fouls it out of play into the box seats in the third base side.
- 2:02:21It is now 11 to 10 with the Reds having the 11.
- 2:02:28Balls, next pitch is Volker for Strechhoff.
- 2:02:37There have been some shots here today. Didn't need any wind for some of them.
- 2:02:41Fastball swung on there as a base hit on the right center field. He may try to stretch it.
- 2:02:45Mercer coming over to cut it off. Here's Morgan going into second.
- 2:02:48Thrill off target and he's in there with a double.
- 2:02:52Thrill kept fearing over towards first base.
- 2:02:55That was about 15 feet off the bag at second.
- 2:02:59Morgan had made up his mind as soon as he left the batter's box he was going to try it for two.
- 2:03:04And he got it.
- 2:03:07That's only his 14th double this year. I thought he had more than that.
- 2:03:12And that's Joe's second hit of the day.
- 2:03:15George Foster, the leading home run hitter in the majors with 32, has two singles in his strikeout so far today.
- 2:03:29Run of it's second, curve, checks he swing it's low, ball one. They ask for the appeal, denied.
- 2:03:35Willie Hernandez, feared in both games of the double-hunter yesterday,
- 2:03:41and the south ball is now throwing in the cup bullpen down the left field line.
- 2:03:4511 to 10 since he's leading.
- 2:03:53Ball's fastball swung up.
- 2:03:55Bouncing ball to Onoveras when he gets back to second to throw to first he's got it.
- 2:03:59Onoveras having to angle in towards the bound and in front of the shortstop position.
- 2:04:04And Morgan hastily got back into the bag at second.
- 2:04:09One gone in the top of the sixth inning and here's Johnny Bench.
- 2:04:16Just prior to his rerun homer in the first inning, he just missed building one of Ray Burris' shots out of here.
- 2:04:26It went foul. He made up for it. The next one was really hammered.
- 2:04:30His 23rd homer of the year.
- 2:04:33Since then he's walked twice and scored once. Dix the first pitch high, ball one.
- 2:04:39The Dodgers did not score in the bottom of the first inning.
- 2:04:42No score at the end of one. The Phillies and L.A. in a day game,
- 2:04:46the most unusual thing during the week at Los Angeles.
- 2:04:49One-0 pitch, good sinker fastball fouled.
- 2:04:52Terms off the wall, back on the line to the plate and first.
- 2:04:55Would you say the score was going to be, Bill?
- 2:04:58I'll go with a total of 28 runs.
- 2:05:0028? Yeah. Okay.
- 2:05:03That means somebody's got to win by at least two. Yeah.
- 2:05:10One wants it.
- 2:05:12Well now there's a deep drive, but it's going to stay in the ballpark and Bittner will catch it. He does.
- 2:05:18Thanks, Evan.
- 2:05:20Miss, I'll tell you, the funniest net game, but games I ever saw.
- 2:05:23When I was a kid living in Buffalo for a while, I used to go to international league games.
- 2:05:27And I saw a double header between Buffalo and Syracuse, 28 to 11 and 16 to 12.
- 2:05:32Ha ha ha, double header.
- 2:05:34There were ten home runs in the first game. Yeah.
- 2:05:36They set international league records all over the place.
- 2:05:38This reshaping up is the best kind of thing.
- 2:05:42Geronimo stepping in, Morgan still a second with Cugon.
- 2:05:46Fastball, tails outside, the left-hander, ball one.
- 2:05:53Two-two-four, what's your guess of the total runs?
- 2:05:5727 runs. 27.
- 2:05:59That comes with 14, huh?
- 2:06:01All right.
- 2:06:03John Lockes, what's yours?
- 2:06:05Deep drive.
- 2:06:07There's a swing, deep drive, let field.
- 2:06:09Bittner, go back, go back. Get there, Larry.
- 2:06:11Look out! Oh, man!
- 2:06:14What an acrobatic job by Larry Bittner.
- 2:06:17And that ball really was hammered.
- 2:06:19And he really added to it a tremendous job of recovery.
- 2:06:24He may have had a heart-stopping catch.
- 2:06:28Started to drift back, ball still carried.
- 2:06:31Finally at the last moment of the warning crack, he leaped up and back towards the wall.
- 2:06:35Fairly got it in the webbing of the glove.
- 2:06:38Somehow, as he came down right at himself, went up against the blinds,
- 2:06:43and still managed to hold out of the ball.
- 2:06:47Thank you, Larry. That's our thrill for the day.
- 2:06:51And Geronimo and the Reds are retired in the sixth inning.
- 2:06:56A leadoff homer by Griffey, double by Morgan, who's left-stranded.
- 2:07:03Now we move to the cup half of inning number six in Don't Go Away, Cincinnati leading 11-10.

- 2:08:24we're going to give you a Jack Frick house.
- 2:08:28Now, what's your guess on the total runs for the day? We ought to get a good pool going up here.
- 2:08:36Four bones delivery. Buckner swings, gets under it, lets a high fly ball to the right fielder, Griffey.
- 2:08:42Just missed hitting one out of here.
- 2:08:44But, cop, Wynn started to carry it, and Griffey had to make a good recovery to grab that one one-handed.
- 2:08:53Bobby Mercer, the batter, has a homer and a single. Two runs, about it in today.
- 2:08:59Let's pause a moment here for station identification.
- 2:09:09This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 2:09:13WGN Radio, Chicago, 331.
- 2:09:20Four bones delivers. Bobby Mercer takes the ball, two low, ball one.
- 2:09:25Alex Lloyd here with you at Wrigley Field. Let's see, 21 runs right now.
- 2:09:29I think I'm going to guess 25 total for the day.
- 2:09:35That's not very many, is it?
- 2:09:38Bobby takes, there's a strike. The level of count at one-on-one on him.
- 2:09:43Got his 15th homer of the year in the first inning. Here's a pitch.
- 2:09:48Gets under the fast ball and fouls it back up onto the screen.
- 2:09:54From Beaverville, Illinois. Here to cheer the Cubs on to a pennant.
- 2:09:59Lloyd Yates, Mort Regnier, Phoenix Arsenal, and Danny Yates.
- 2:10:04Beaverville, Illinois. Where in the world is that?
- 2:10:11I think somebody's putting me on.
- 2:10:17Bob Odom the windup. Mercer swings and he misses for strike three.
- 2:10:21He shakes his head in disbelief.
- 2:10:24Went after one letter high away. Four bones, sixth strikeout of the ballgame.
- 2:10:33No need to hurry back, Bill. We may be here for a long time.
- 2:10:36You may not get on the air today.
- 2:10:39Jerry Morales, believe it or not, is the only Cub in the starting lineup today who does not yet have a hit.
- 2:10:47And he is the leading hitter on the club.
- 2:10:50I find that a little ironic.
- 2:10:52Takes the first pitch of strike.
- 2:10:54He's popped up, banned, and hammered a drive to the right fielder.
- 2:10:58Hit it hard. But he's 0 for 3. 0-1 pitch.
- 2:11:01There's a high fly ball coming in for it. He's going to get there. Nope.
- 2:11:06Jerry Morales gets his first hit of the day.
- 2:11:09A Texas Laker in Funnigan Grippy.
- 2:11:12That would have been embarrassing, you know, with all these base hits.
- 2:11:15That's the 12th by the Cubs.
- 2:11:17A little jerry not to have one of them.
- 2:11:22Hit number 7, Alpeiro Barbon.
- 2:11:25Brings up out of the air, so after striking out his first two times up,
- 2:11:29singled and drove and a run in the fourth inning.
- 2:11:33The Reds lead 11 to 10.
- 2:11:38Takes the first pitch of strike.
- 2:11:41The Cubs with two homers in the first inning, Buckner with two men on,
- 2:11:45followed by Mercer's shot.
- 2:11:48Minnilol led off the second with a homer.
- 2:11:51Here's the ball missing away at the knees.
- 2:11:53The Cubs with three homeruns.
- 2:11:55The Reds got three in the first inning.
- 2:11:57Rose to lead off the game, Bench with two men on.
- 2:12:00Mike Lama the man on.
- 2:12:02And Grippy led off the sixth with a homer.
- 2:12:04So they have four.
- 2:12:06And the total of seven, there's a strike.
- 2:12:08The total of seven homers by these two clubs today is four away
- 2:12:13from the high by two teams in a game in the majors.
- 2:12:19Barbon with a one-two pitch.
- 2:12:21Checks his swing and it's low and inside, two and two.
- 2:12:26The Cardinals of Chabona Park's Kenny Hubs League for nine and ten-year-olds are here today, 20 strong.
- 2:12:35Two-two pitch.
- 2:12:36Outside, he wouldn't chase it, three and two, and the runner of the Marathas will be off with this pitch.
- 2:12:41Kenny Hubs, of course, the great young second baseman for the Cubs that was killed in the off-season private plane crash.
- 2:12:51Three-two pitch.
- 2:12:52High for four and four-ball.
- 2:12:55Upset with himself.
- 2:12:58Hying Ron Morales at second base.
- 2:13:01Onabar, son at first, represents the go-ahead run and Manny Trio, the hitter.
- 2:13:10Manny rounded out in the first, walked and scored in the third, singled and drove in a run in the fourth.
- 2:13:23The stretch, the pitch, swung down, a miss.
- 2:13:26Good fastball in on it.
- 2:13:28Kenny Hubs League is part of that Chabona Park Youth Council's total baseball program that has in excess of 600 players.
- 2:13:38The Cubs are in the box seats and back to the cup dugout with the red Cardinal jerseys on.
- 2:13:42With a swing and a lazy little flat ball that Kendrick becomes in for, he's got it easily.
- 2:13:47The Cubs are retired in the sixth.
- 2:13:51No runs, one hit, two men left.
- 2:13:54At Bwigley Field at the end of six full innings of play, Cincinnati Reds, 11, the Chicago Cubs, 10.
- 2:14:01January 27, 1976, Steve Markoff hands over a check for $7,300,000.

- 2:14:58Visit the world's largest Oldsmobile dealer, Wild in Libertyville.
- 2:15:12Dave Concepcion has to lead a lap here for the Cincinnati Reds.
- 2:15:18Wild willy it there.
- 2:15:21Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord, McKean family of Warren, Illinois, wishing Colleen McKeon a speedy recovery.
- 2:15:28She's in the hospital, I'm happy to learn, up at Monroe, Wisconsin.
- 2:15:35Colleen an avid compend.
- 2:15:40First pitch, and Concepcion takes the ball, but misses outside the knees to the right-hander.
- 2:15:49Wind up that ball, there's one that just misses a little low.
- 2:15:53Ball two.
- 2:15:55The Phillies and the Dodgers are in the third, still no score in the West Coast.
- 2:16:02Ball steps back to widen up the pitch, Concepcion takes a strike, a good fast ball.
- 2:16:08Davey with two hits, pair of singles, spatted in two runs today.
- 2:16:13He was hitless in the series up until this afternoon, there's the ball, it's blown away.
- 2:16:19Ball three, strike one on the Reds shortstop Dave Concepcion.
- 2:16:25Paul on the wind up, three-one pitch, fast ball, misses low.
- 2:16:28Ball four, he lost it.
- 2:16:30That opens up the seven.
- 2:16:36First walk issued by Paul, who came on a relief in the fourth inning.
- 2:16:41With two on, nobody out.
- 2:16:44Got a double play ball and then a ground out off the bat of Concepcion.
- 2:16:47Good play by DeJesus to retire the side.
- 2:16:51He ended a single, then a double play ball on a sacrifice attempt for the pitcher in the fifth.
- 2:16:57He went for Homer in the sixth inning to Ken Griffey, followed by a double, then got the next three men.
- 2:17:02A couple of them were hard outs.
- 2:17:05First pitch, Lum gets under it, fouls it back out of play.
- 2:17:10He's like a two-run Homer in the first inning, his second Homer of the year.
- 2:17:14He's reached and scored on a fielders choice and single.
- 2:17:18Strike one count on the left-hander.
- 2:17:23Stan Mertz, Jay Davis from West Illinois, took the day off to watch the Cubs and the Reds go at it today.
- 2:17:30A wild one, 11 to 10 since he's seventh inning to pitch.
- 2:17:35Pitch out, runner not going.
- 2:17:37Strike one.
- 2:17:40Gang from the Sibley Pharmacy.
- 2:17:45Watching the Cubs the very best, hoping they can hold on to the number one spot in the Eastern Division.
- 2:17:51Throw it up first to run her back safely.
- 2:18:01One-one pitch coming up to Lum and he calls for time and steps out.
- 2:18:06With a speck of dust in his eye.
- 2:18:09One of the great engineers at WGN, Art Avery, going to be having a retirement very shortly.
- 2:18:18And unfortunately, neither Lum nor I are going to be able to be on hand for the retirement party that they're going to throw for Mr. Avery tomorrow afternoon.
- 2:18:26By that time, we expect to be down in Houston with the Chicago Cubs for the start of our series.
- 2:18:31One-one pitch, the winner goes.
- 2:18:33Outside, the throw is high. Freo comes down and almost spiked Concepcion going in.
- 2:18:38He may have come down a little bit on his left leg, but he's in there with a stolen base.
- 2:18:45Davey's been sitting down and now gets up kind of slowly.
- 2:18:49Here's something to realize, what are you trying to do that to me for?
- 2:18:51Smiles when he says it.
- 2:18:55That's his 20-second stolen base of the year.
- 2:18:59And thrown out just five times.
- 2:19:01So they've got a runner in scoring position with a count of two and one.
- 2:19:07Two-one pitch.
- 2:19:09Got the fastball off the end of the bat and fouled it out of play, two and two.
- 2:19:19A lot of ice cream, bro.
- 2:19:24Oh, no, Mr. Art Avery.
- 2:19:30One of the great ones.
- 2:19:33Two-two pitch.
- 2:19:35Gets under, led up, and he hits a deep foul way down the right field side into the box seats.
- 2:19:40It's still two and two.
- 2:19:43Dodgers and Philadelphia have not been able to score yet today.
- 2:19:46They're in the fourth on the West Coast.
- 2:19:50Day game during the week at Dodger Stadium is almost as rare as snow in July in Chicago.
- 2:19:58Two-two pitch.
- 2:20:00Gets under that one and out in front, another foul ball parked down the right field line.
- 2:20:04It's still two and two on Mike.
- 2:20:19Right of its second with nobody out.
- 2:20:22Sinking fastball is low.
- 2:20:23Ball three, strike two.
- 2:20:26Full count on the number eight man in the Cincinnati batting order today, Mike Lum.
- 2:20:39The rest would like to get him out of there.
- 2:20:41Looks at the brother at second, Concepcion, breaking ball, and he lost him outside.
- 2:20:49Second walk in the inning.
- 2:20:55That's more, Willie Hernandez throwing in the cup bowl then.
- 2:20:58We're going to have a pinch hitter now for Pedro Borbon.
- 2:21:03Head armbar, sir.
- 2:21:05Got into yesterday's ball game as a pinch hitter.
- 2:21:11He's two for twelve as a pinch swinger this year.
- 2:21:20First inning, these two clubs tied a major league record.
- 2:21:24A total of five home runs, three by the Reds.
- 2:21:32In the seventh, Cincy with a one-run lead, eleven to ten, and an opportunity to expand it.
- 2:21:41Armbrister, right-hander.
- 2:21:43Here's the pitch.
- 2:21:44He's going to buck and he takes a strike at the bat out there.
- 2:21:52Here's the on-back circle, the lead-out man, Pete Rose.
- 2:22:01Paul, who came out of relief in the fourth and a bit of a jam as a result of two walks,
- 2:22:05the right-hander's pitch, Armbrister, bumps it foul on the third-base side, and he's in the hole,
- 2:22:09nothing in two.
- 2:22:11Eight-cup fans from the Maple Lanes in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
- 2:22:16They are lending their voices to the enthusiasm of the other cup fans here today.
- 2:22:24Proud of somewhere around 32, 33,000, I would guess.
- 2:22:29Maybe a little bit bigger.
- 2:22:35Armbrister's not sure of the side from George Sugar at third, re-checks.
- 2:22:47Now the right-hander steps back in.
- 2:22:51With a nothing and two pitch coming up, nobody out-runners at first and second.
- 2:22:54Paul delivers a swing and a foul back on a play and a fastball.
- 2:22:59A day in advance, a happy birthday.
- 2:23:02The young Tom Greyer from Sugar Grove and Jim Leichness from Newark.
- 2:23:07Both will be celebrating birthdays tomorrow, while the Cubs will be opening their road trip at Houston.
- 2:23:15The strikes, the 0-2 delivery, curve, strike free call.
- 2:23:21Pinch hitter, Ed Armbrister, set up to sacrifice, couldn't do it, and is caught looking at strike three.
- 2:23:30He's gone away.
- 2:23:33That for Paul is his first strike out of the day.
- 2:23:36Herman Franks may be going to make two changes now, as Pete Rose is going to be the hitter,
- 2:23:41followed by left-hander Skrippy and Morgan, and he has Hernandez ready in the bullpen,
- 2:23:46bringing out his lineup card as he's talking with Minerwald and Paul Ruschel on the mound.
- 2:23:52And Andy Olson, played umpire, beckoned to by Herman, but he wants to give him his changes.
- 2:23:59We are in the seventh inning at Brigby Field. There have been a total of 27 base hits so far.
- 2:24:05Eight home runs.
- 2:24:10I'm sorry, seven home runs.
- 2:24:13Four by Cincy.
- 2:24:16But don't go away. The score, Cincinnati 11, the Chicago Cubs 10, while Willie Hernandez comes in.
- 2:24:24Let's take time out for this message.

- 2:25:30exclusively at participating True Value Hardware Stores.
- 2:25:43One of your netties worked in both games with a double-hunter yesterday,
- 2:25:48and he's going to face Pete Ross with Cincinnati runners at first and second.
- 2:25:54One away.
- 2:26:01Barbara Ohm's family.
- 2:26:05They are from Beardsdale, Illinois.
- 2:26:07That they cut us is just outside of Decatur.
- 2:26:11And they sent up a peacock, brother, from their peacock.
- 2:26:15How about that? Brother Roach is going to be 13 tomorrow,
- 2:26:20and Ann says she's going to be 14 tomorrow.
- 2:26:25Well, happy birthday to both.
- 2:26:36Well, it's batting right-handed.
- 2:26:38A homer and a single today for the veteran.
- 2:26:41Runners at first and second, Hernandez first pitch, a slight call to the fastball defeat.
- 2:26:50His homer was his seventh of the year.
- 2:26:52That triggered the fireworks, led off the ball game against Ray Burris.
- 2:26:59Willie checks the runner, delivers, outside, and low ball one-strike one.
- 2:27:04Move that conception, looking back towards the bag at second.
- 2:27:13Sensi with 15 hits, the Cubs with 12, and the Reds with a one-run lead, 11 to 10.
- 2:27:21Seventh inning.
- 2:27:23One-one pitch, runners go.
- 2:27:25It's low, and Middlewell can't find a handle on it, it's into the dirt.
- 2:27:29And they have runners at second and third.
- 2:27:33Phil Concepcion gets his 23rd stolen base of the year,
- 2:27:38and Mike Lum winds up with a stolen base.
- 2:27:44And that for Mike is his second.
- 2:27:49Now the infield will be coming in, and the Jesus on the left side,
- 2:27:54right up on the edge of the grass, they're going to put the rows on intentionally now,
- 2:27:58after the double-fifth, and hopefully they can be able to come up with a double play ball.
- 2:28:03When Willie came in, Cattahar came in to play second,
- 2:28:07and he'll be batting in the ninth spot in the batting order,
- 2:28:10with Willie batting where Manny Creo was.
- 2:28:16The walk issue to Pete Rose, to load him up for Ken Griffey.
- 2:28:24Two singles and a homer for Griffey this afternoon.
- 2:28:30He has eight hits in the series, in 16 at bats.
- 2:28:35The homer was the left-hander's ninth of the year.
- 2:28:39Infield hoping for a double play ball, Hernandez winds the pitch,
- 2:28:43and he's hung on, and he fouls it, comes back on the line of the plate and third.
- 2:28:56These teams are four homers away from tying a Major League record.
- 2:29:01A home runs and a ball game by both clubs.
- 2:29:09Willie gets his sign from Middlewall, looks at the runner at third, delivers.
- 2:29:13Griffey takes it high, ball one, strike one.
- 2:29:22While we'll be on the road at Houston and Cincinnati,
- 2:29:26following this ball game today, Cubs then will be coming back to take on San Diego.
- 2:29:31Here's a swing and a ground ball right side, Cattahar dives,
- 2:29:34it's in the right field, can set the honor scoring, here comes Spike Glob to the plate to throw to second.
- 2:29:39He slides, he is safe for second base.
- 2:29:42Bobbi Mercer wound up only about 60 feet out on the outfield grass on the right side after Cattahar dove head-length out of the infield dirt to get that ball that barely got by him.
- 2:29:55And Griffey with his excellent speed, seeing that, figured he could leg it out.
- 2:29:59He is now about in his third and fourth runs of the day and the Reds have a three-run lead, 14 to 10.
- 2:30:14He now has two singles, a double and a homer today.
- 2:30:17He'll wind up in the pitch to Morgan, the infield end, and he takes, it's a strike.
- 2:30:31Wind up the delivery.
- 2:30:33Morgan lays off and it misses outside of the knees, the left-hander, one and one.
- 2:30:39Wind may be blowing out in New York and Boston today too.
- 2:30:45Morgan runs there.
- 2:30:47One-one pitch, gets under it, fouls it back into the upper deck.
- 2:30:52One and two on Morgan.
- 2:30:55He has a single and a double.
- 2:31:00Everybody in near batting order.
- 2:31:03It's at least one hit.
- 2:31:06And only Johnnie mentioned, Geronimo had just one, one-two pitch.
- 2:31:10Swung out and missed a good curveball down and away.
- 2:31:14The tennis man.
- 2:31:21What the score, 13 to 10.
- 2:31:25George Foster will be the hitter.
- 2:31:33Leading homer on hitter.
- 2:31:36But they're going to put him on to load up the bases and take their chances with Johnnie Bench.
- 2:31:49Yep, that's ball one.
- 2:31:53And then that's a one, Jeff Foster.
- 2:31:56Some of the crowd doesn't like it.
- 2:31:59A flying fan under the fire maybe, huh?
- 2:32:10Appreciate the nice letter from a good cup fan in Chicago from North Odell, Dick Flecky.
- 2:32:19I think that the Cubs in the next few weeks are going to start getting themselves more wins than losses,
- 2:32:29which of course has been their fate the last couple of weeks.
- 2:32:32But he, like all good cup fans, are glad that the Cubs are still on top in that National League Eastern Division.
- 2:32:39It was two months ago today, May 28th, that the Cubs climbed in the first place,
- 2:32:45beating the Pittsburgh Pirates here at Whitley Field.
- 2:32:52Something has been dropped down to the warning track out in left field below the bleachers.
- 2:32:56Andy Olson, the playdump fire, is pointing out there.
- 2:32:58Larry Bittner is going up to pick it up.
- 2:33:03He picks it up, looks like a windbreaker, tossing it up into the bleacher fan.
- 2:33:07He dropped it out there in left field.
- 2:33:10Good arm.
- 2:33:12The bench-stepping in.
- 2:33:15We run over for Johnny in the first inning, has walked twice and aligned hard.
- 2:33:19First pitch gets under it, hits a high fly ball.
- 2:33:22Mercer coming in, calling for the ball.
- 2:33:25He's there, he's got it.
- 2:33:26The fly it and he's out.
- 2:33:28And the offensive walk to George Foster pays off.
- 2:33:34They send H.M. to the plate in the seventh inning.
- 2:33:38Only one hit, a few runs for it.
- 2:33:42Four walks, two of them in catchable and three men left.
- 2:33:46Well, it's time for the seventh inning stretch at Whitley Field.
- 2:33:53Well, I'm sure it's not too happy about the score, but they have high hopes as the Cubs come to bat at the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 2:33:59With the score, the Cincinnati Reds 13, the Chicago Cubs hit.
- 2:34:04Ready, people?
- 2:34:05Ready.
- 2:34:06Is everybody hungry?
- 2:34:08Yes.
- 2:34:09Where do you want to eat?
- 2:34:10Golden Bear.
- 2:34:11Why?
- 2:34:12Because for hot summer days they got the best selection.
- 2:34:15Really?
- 2:34:16Do they have salads?
- 2:34:17Sure.
- 2:34:18Like a delicious shrimp salad?
- 2:34:21Yeah, and they have the Mama Golden Bear Salad too.
- 2:34:25The one with ham, cheese, tomato and egg wedges on fresh lettuce with your choice of dressing?
- 2:34:30Right.
- 2:34:31I like salads in the summer.
- 2:34:34So do we. Does Golden Bear have ice cream?
- 2:34:37We like ice cream.
- 2:34:39Golden Bear has the fabulous Goldilocks Fairyland Fountain with Super Sundays and sodas.
- 2:34:45And you should try the Goldilocks Dream Banana Split.
- 2:34:48We will. Good-bye.
- 2:34:50Hey, where are you all going?
- 2:34:54Golden Bear, Golden Bear, honey of a bee, the swiffer is one, Golden Bear.
- 2:35:12That city loves the Cubs. When all is said and done, the Cubs will still be number one.
- 2:35:17Cubs, we love you.
- 2:35:21That's a friendly mailman from Rolling Meadows holding up that sign just below us.
- 2:35:29We've got a whole group from Rolling Meadows out here today, Little Leaguers.
- 2:35:35Robert C. Heighton, Jr.
- 2:35:40Rolling Meadows Park District.
- 2:35:42A group of Cubs fans here today.
- 2:35:48George Winterwald, Palmer when he let off the second inning.
- 2:35:52Wind up.
- 2:35:53Manny Sarmiento, their new pitcher, and the first pitch is a strike.
- 2:35:56Right-handed, when you're out there, and he got into yesterday's action.
- 2:36:03Slightly built little fellow, and he's got a pretty strong arm.
- 2:36:06Wind up the pitch.
- 2:36:08Into the dirt. Ball, one strike run.
- 2:36:12Four ball, five innings of work, seven hits, six strikeouts, a couple of walks and four runs.
- 2:36:20Dale Murray started. There's a swing and a drive in the right field.
- 2:36:24Grippy coming out, he's there. Makes the head-high catch, and there's one out in the seventh inning.
- 2:36:29That'll bring up Mick out of her, batting for the first time in a ballgame,
- 2:36:33in the number nine spot, hitting 288 for the year.
- 2:36:48The Niles Little League Giants out here today, and boy do we want to congratulate that bunch.
- 2:36:53They posted 18 wins, no losses.
- 2:36:58Perfection. The Niles Little League Giants.
- 2:37:03Mick Dex in the first pitch is a strike to the right-hander.
- 2:37:07The coaches are out here with them, too, and they did a good job. Had to.
- 2:37:11Al Pritzy, Jerry Kurtz, 0-1 delivery.
- 2:37:15Sarmiento throws it into the dirt. Let's pause for station identification.
- 2:37:20This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 2:37:24WGN Radio Chicago, 82 degrees at Midway Airport at one minute before four.
- 2:37:32Bottom of the seventh, Sensei with a 13-to-10 lead.
- 2:37:37There's a sowing fastball that he goes after. Fouls at bat up under the net.
- 2:37:42Ball one, strike two.
- 2:37:46The Aggies really want to ball them all today.
- 2:37:51The Niles had beaten New York last night 6-4 in a big, big house at Yankee Stadium last night, about 47,000.
- 2:37:58Today the Yankees came out a big winner, 14-2.
- 2:38:02One-two pitch that goes after the fastball. Pops it foul. Johnny Bench has a play on the ball.
- 2:38:08He's got it. All he had to do was turn around, take about two steps.
- 2:38:15Two gone, and the bottom of the seventh bases a ref.
- 2:38:20Ron DeJesus doubled and scored in the first inning.
- 2:38:24After his double, Larry Bickner drew a walk, and Bill Buckner got his first home run at Wrigley Field in a club uniform.
- 2:38:34He reached on an error in the second inning and scored.
- 2:38:38It's one for four today.
- 2:38:40Tom Fastball, low ball, or strike one, I'm sorry, off the corner to DeJesus.
- 2:38:51Sarmando Wines, sidearm pitch, outside. Now it's one-on-one.
- 2:39:03This guy looks like a strong wind would blow him right off the mound.
- 2:39:11Wind up the pitch. DeJesus swings out in front of it, fouls it down the left field line.
- 2:39:17The Wendy's baseball team sitting behind home plate today.
- 2:39:25Got their yellow caps on this afternoon with their coach, Darryl Brazel.
- 2:39:37Cubs trailing by three runs.
- 2:39:39D'Amietto's next pitch, a fast ball, is low, ball to strike two, with two gone.
- 2:39:46Bottom of the seventh inning.
- 2:39:48Slowed down a little bit since that wild, wild first inning when the Reds batted around, put six runs on the board.
- 2:39:55The Cubs came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
- 2:40:01Two-two pitch, strike, three called.
- 2:40:05And Yvonne discussively whips the bat away.
- 2:40:10So the Cubs go down in order.
- 2:40:12In the bottom of the seventh inning, and at the end of seven here at Wrigley Field,
- 2:40:17the Cincinnati Reds, 13, and the Cubs get.
- 2:40:21Today's politicians have nothing on George Borkowski.
- 2:40:24The Guinness Book of World Records says old George shook 37,500 hands in 7 hours, 15 minutes, and 18 seconds.
- 2:40:32He did it in London, England on February 22, 1967.
- 2:40:36The Guinness Book of World Records is chock full of these gripping tales.
- 2:40:40Too bad Guinness doesn't have a section on big card dealers operating out of small towns.
- 2:40:45If they did, a page or two would have to be devoted to wild olds in Libertyville, Illinois.
- 2:40:50That's because wilds selling new Oldsmobiles at a record-breaking pace.
- 2:40:54People from all over Illinois have combined with neighboring states to make wild in Libertyville the world's largest Oldsmobile dealer.
- 2:41:01What's wild got the others don't?
- 2:41:03Why do smart shoppers come from far and wide to buy their new Oldsmobiles at wild in Libertyville?
- 2:41:09The answer to the world's worst-kept secret awaits you in Libertyville, Illinois.
- 2:41:13Home of wild olds, the world's largest Oldsmobile dealer.
- 2:41:29Well, not since 1969 is a three-game series drawn as many paid fans as this one has between the Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds.
- 2:41:39A paid attendance today, 32,155.
- 2:41:44So the Cubs and the Reds in these three days have drawn 111,373.
- 2:41:54The Cubs now, about 942,000, well, almost 943,000 at home for the year.
- 2:42:09Willie Hernandez winds, Geronimo swings in the first pitch, and Lofts went high and beat the right-center field, and it is gone!
- 2:42:19Geronimo on the very first pitch of the inning.
- 2:42:24Lofts is seventh home run of the year, and home run number five by the Reds this afternoon.
- 2:42:32Now these two Cubs are only three runs away from tying a major big record.
- 2:42:40And it was hit.
- 2:42:47Now 14 to 10.
- 2:42:53Stepping into the balance box, Dave Concepcioni takes the ball outside.
- 2:43:04He takes, there's the ball.
- 2:43:07The five homers that the Reds have hit so far today are high this year in a ballgame.
- 2:43:14Two of it, fastball taken for a strike at the letters.
- 2:43:19They got three in the first inning, Rose, Bench, and Michael on off-ray burst.
- 2:43:26Riffey, there's a swing and a high fly ball to Jerry Morales in center field, should be the first out.
- 2:43:33It is.
- 2:43:35Ken Riffey let off the sixth inning with a homer off Paul Russell.
- 2:43:39Now Geronimo has let off the eighth inning with a homer off Fernandez.
- 2:43:47Concepcioni's flat out to center field, and that will bring up Mike Lung, homered in the first inning with the man on.
- 2:43:56It was after the first pitch, didn't have much of a cut, pops a foul ball, middle wall having a play on it, and he's got it.
- 2:44:02Right in front of the box seats in the third-base side where the on-neck emblem is buried.
- 2:44:08Now Manny Samuendo will be the hitter.
- 2:44:14Boy, this is really a wild one.
- 2:44:17Cincinnati, 14, the Cubs, 10.
- 2:44:21They have 17 hits.
- 2:44:29Yeah, the wind has been blowing up.
- 2:44:32Fabiano's swing, one-off for the Buckeye at first base, he gloves it, comes over, touches the bag, and back, retires the side.
- 2:44:40So it didn't take long, but they pick up a run.
- 2:44:43And Geronimo's seventh home run of the year.
- 2:44:46The only hit nobody left on, the Cubs with six outs left in the ball game come up here in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:44:52Cincinnati, 14, the Chicago Cubs, 10.
- 2:45:00Heilermann's Old Style.
- 2:45:02The legendary beer from God's country is a beer brewed with sparkling, pure Wisconsin spring water
- 2:45:10in a traditional old-world way of pure brewing, double brewing, called coisening.
- 2:45:17Coisening is the most natural way to brew beer and the most expensive.
- 2:45:23Most expensive because it takes more time.
- 2:45:26Heilermann's Old Style is one American premium beer that's still fully, that's fully coisened, naturally carbonated.
- 2:45:36Coisening is what makes Old Style a great light beer.
- 2:45:41Try Old Style and taste the difference coisening makes.
- 2:45:46Old Style, pure brewed in God's country.
- 2:45:53Heilermann Brewing Company, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
- 2:46:02Well, let's see if the Cubs can start fighting the range again.
- 2:46:07They went down in order against this lightly built right-hander, Manny Sarmiento in the seventh.
- 2:46:12Now we have Larry Bittner, Bill Bunker, and Bobby Mercer, all three left-handed hitters to go against him.
- 2:46:19All right, and little blue girl, I hope you're enjoying it. We see the Wendy's team now.
- 2:46:24They've got uniforms on. Their shirts are just like those of the Houston Astros, just exactly.
- 2:46:31I wonder how it comes.
- 2:46:35I must have a ball game to play tonight.
- 2:46:43Well, come on Larry, you have two hits today.
- 2:46:45That gives us three walks. Sarmiento's first pitchers' stride, but if it eases the crowd, it begins to open up.
- 2:46:57Little right-hander in the bow, wind up the pitch, run-up, bow-ball by the first base line.
- 2:47:04We'll wait just a moment. Bada Bada might have a chance to be in there.
- 2:47:13Group of 37 here today from the Christian Reformed Church in German Valley, Illinois.
- 2:47:21Among the more than 33,000 total in attendance, a total of 33,286.
- 2:47:34Manny and Olajicid, as he gets his sign, the right-hander's next pitch high and outside, one or two re-wasted.
- 2:47:41Ritz-Hawks want Milwaukee, 12-5. Yankees we said, but Baltimore 14-2.
- 2:47:55Wind up one-two-three. Fastball here to get back out the way.
- 2:47:58They're almost hitting the legs, two-two-count.
- 2:48:01The Summer Park Playground group from South Haven, Michigan, with 80 youngsters are here.
- 2:48:07There it comes all the way.
- 2:48:11And with the Playground leaders, Chip Foster, who got his mom along, helps lead the cheers.
- 2:48:21Two-two-fifth. One-hound bouncing ball, base hit in the right field.
- 2:48:25Josh Mads, the first base to land the trick for his mom, with his third hit of the ball.
- 2:48:37Now the batter will be Bill Bucknum, who had a three-round homer in the first inning.
- 2:48:44Bottom of Bill's third homer on this year, his first two have come on the roll.
- 2:48:50Since then, he has flied up twice to right and hit one-feet to the center fielder, Geronimo.
- 2:49:03Back to the clock, they're 13 to the day.
- 2:49:07Danny Farmiano from the stretch.
- 2:49:11Bucknum looking like he was going to try to push him up, but he's not going.
- 2:49:15He just wanted to see what Rose would do, and a pitch was a strike.
- 2:49:25Le'Ann Houston tomorrow night.
- 2:49:29Start the road trip again on Saturday night, then Sunday afternoon, then over to Cincy.
- 2:49:35Oh, one delivery coming up. Bucknum, pitch, strike, a fastball, then a high and away from it.
- 2:49:42He's not very happy with that call.
- 2:49:45Andy Olson working beyond the plate. Bucknum's going to get out of there for a moment.
- 2:49:50Vince Lloyd and Luke Woodrow here with you.
- 2:49:53Seems to me there have been a lot of those calls, Luke, and Andy today, as given to the pitcher.
- 2:49:57They've been working on the outside of all the left-handed hitters.
- 2:50:03It's the pitch, of course. Can't do much with it if you swing at it.
- 2:50:08It's out in front of Bucknum, 0-2 delivery, gets under it and fouls it back.
- 2:50:12It's going to be out of play.
- 2:50:14Vincent Wheeld hoping to be able to get under it, but way back, just below our broadcasting booth.
- 2:50:23Lafayette, Indiana, central Presbyterian churches here today.
- 2:50:30Kepline, Indiana, setback number 31-51.
- 2:50:36Boy, it would be nice to bail this one out. It's 14-10, since he's a thinning.
- 2:50:44What a head as a champ. Lafayette's pitchfucker takes the fastball.
- 2:50:49This time he gets the call.
- 2:50:52Ball one, strike two, high and away.
- 2:50:58Everybody in the Cubs starting lineup today, including the starting pitcher, has at least one hit.
- 2:51:05Laverse was not in the scene long.
- 2:51:10Lafayette already, little guy fires, Bucknum swings, drive, right field, it's 12, back, back, back.
- 2:51:17Hey, that is a foul there. 14-12, Bucknum's second over of the year.
- 2:51:26There he is today.
- 2:51:48Ah, what's that? He does foul, gets on home plate.
- 2:51:54A snarkar flew out of here on that one. We didn't even notice it.
- 2:51:58There's some fans right below us here.
- 2:52:01The mothers with transistors radio saying it belongs up here.
- 2:52:04Yeah, stars. Thank you guys. That's all right, finish the beer.
- 2:52:10Don't spill the beer.
- 2:52:12Come on up, buddy, get a pizza from Malnati's pizza.
- 2:52:15Yeah, move Malnati, send a little pizza. Yes, you can come up too.
- 2:52:20Malnati is pretty as you if you're allowed up here, I guarantee it.
- 2:52:25Billy Buckner is second home run of the day.
- 2:52:35It is now 14-12.
- 2:52:38With a fair, fair runs to lead. Mercer takes, there is a ball.
- 2:52:52The count is 101. Four home runs by the Cubs today.
- 2:53:04Darmiano's next pitch. Mercer gets under, fouls it back up on the screen.
- 2:53:14Buckner now with four homers and the five runs by the din in this ballgame, giving 29 for the year.
- 2:53:23Darmiano was out in front of him.
- 2:53:29Anything can happen. Here is a swing and a miss for strike three, including a strike out.
- 2:53:35And I say anything can happen.
- 2:53:42One gone in the bottom of the eighth inning and Jerry Morales will be the hitter.
- 2:53:47He was the last Cub in the starting lineup today to get a base hit.
- 2:53:52Singled with two out in the sixth inning.
- 2:53:54And out of errors through a walk, but the inning ended on a pop-up in the shadow right field.
- 2:53:59Mani, Jerry, one for four today. Takes the first pitch.
- 2:54:05Into close the fastball.
- 2:54:09Blue suitor, Pete Roburg, a throwing in the cup open.
- 2:54:16Wind up the one-oh did every swing on.
- 2:54:20There's a deep drive. Left field it is.
- 2:54:24Oh, look at that. Out of the ballpark, under the left field wall.
- 2:54:28It is now the red 14, the Chicago Cubs 13, Jerry Morales.
- 2:54:36Makes a deep wide turn at the shortstop position, circling the baseman.
- 2:54:41He is hitting a standing ovation.
- 2:54:44There you are. We'll let you ring the bell.
- 2:54:59We want to thank you very much for bringing the scorecard up.
- 2:55:06Thank you for letting me do it.
- 2:55:08You are?
- 2:55:09Ann Chamberlain from Wolcott, Indiana.
- 2:55:12And who's with you?
- 2:55:13My father, Max Chamberlain.
- 2:55:15Max, got a beautiful broader here.
- 2:55:17Thank you.
- 2:55:18Thank you for bringing it alive.
- 2:55:20I enjoyed the game very much.
- 2:55:21Is it wild?
- 2:55:22Yes, it is.
- 2:55:23Ann, this is your first trip to Wrigley Field, Ann.
- 2:55:26No, it's good. I just love it up here. It's a beautiful field.
- 2:55:30Yes, it is. Thank you so very, very much.
- 2:55:33Good night and relax.
- 2:55:35The hitter, Steve Montabass.
- 2:55:38Fastball outside. He has taken the first one for a ball.
- 2:55:43Jerry Morales with his eighth home run of the year.
- 2:55:49Let me tell you, it's hard to believe what is going on here today.
- 2:55:56Jerry's left the ballpark.
- 2:56:01Second straight hit.
- 2:56:04The second home run off to the end of the evening, and there is ball three.
- 2:56:10The Cubs with 15 hits, five home runs.
- 2:56:17Cincinnati with 17 hits, five home runs.
- 2:56:22And these two clubs now are one homer away from tying a major league record.
- 2:56:31They may not only tie it, they may bust it wide open.
- 2:56:37Three-oh dinner race.
- 2:56:39Montabass takes ball four.
- 2:56:45Jackie Anderson puts his head down, paces back and forth in that dugout on the first base side.
- 2:57:00This is the spot where the pitcher, Willie Hernandez, is due to bat.
- 2:57:04When Herman made a double change back in the seventh inning,
- 2:57:10he put Hernandez in three-oh spot and brought Kebba her in,
- 2:57:14hit in the number nine position, because Mc was going to be the second batter that way in the seventh inning.
- 2:57:24Now, Greg Gross is going to bat, and Sparky has a left-hander throwing in a hurry.
- 2:57:30That looks like Joe Horner down there, Lou, isn't it?
- 2:57:32It is Joe Horner, but Sparky also knows that Cardenal is available.
- 2:57:37Yeah.
- 2:57:39Who do you want, Sarmiento against Greg Gross or Joe Horner against Jose Cardenal?
- 2:57:47Ten home runs at Wrigley Field so far today.
- 2:57:55Now I see Joe Wallace coming out.
- 2:57:57Gross apparently was in the on-back circle, but he was not announced, I don't think.
- 2:58:02That was a fake.
- 2:58:04Now this Wallace is announced right now.
- 2:58:11The strategy there, of course, Wallace is a switch-hitter.
- 2:58:30Well, I tell you, this is not the kind of a game for the baseball purists.
- 2:58:35But let me tell you, it's a whole heck of a lot of fun.
- 2:58:40I think you can come out on top.
- 2:58:42Oh, yeah.
- 2:58:44Oh, we're going to win it.
- 2:58:45We're going to win it now.
- 2:58:50Here comes Larry Shepard out of the dugout again.
- 2:58:53Sarmiento has been keeping loose out there while Cubs have been having a little cat-and-mouse game.
- 2:59:06Now, as we told you earlier, Bruce Suter and Pete Kroberg have been throwing in the cup bullpen.
- 2:59:14Neither is up now.
- 2:59:16There's one out.
- 2:59:20The score, 14 to 13 in favor of the Cincinnati Reds.
- 2:59:27The Cubs at the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:59:31Bittner, open with his third hit of the day, a single to right.
- 2:59:36Buckner brought him in with his second home run of the day.
- 2:59:40Mercer's banned, but Morales got his second straight hit, a home run his eighth of the day.
- 2:59:51Sarmiento, obviously shaken, walked on the bears and forth pitches.
- 2:59:55Now, Charles Wallace stepping in as a pinch-hitter.
- 3:00:00Bittner in the hill from the stretch.
- 3:00:02Wallace takes the hit to strike.
- 3:00:08As a pinch-hitter, Wallace is 0-8.
- 3:00:13But he's drawn a few walks as a pinch-hitter.
- 3:00:16After the year, he's batting 290.
- 3:00:21The stretch by Sarmiento.
- 3:00:23The pitch, Wallace swings at a high, hot foul.
- 3:00:27Rose has room in foul territory, he's got it.
- 3:00:31Snatches it out of the air with those two hands.
- 3:00:33Difficult pick, Rose catch.
- 3:00:39Wallace makes the second out of the inning.
- 3:00:42And here is George Middelwald, who let off the second inning with a homer, his seventh of the year.
- 3:00:50He has won for four today.
- 3:00:55This has got to be one of the craziest ballgames of all time.
- 3:01:03Stretch the pitch.
- 3:01:05One-nine.
- 3:01:06Bates drive down the left field line, should be a base hit.
- 3:01:09It is!
- 3:01:10Boys, back to base.
- 3:01:11Out of air, it's coming around third.
- 3:01:13Lowry has to hold him up.
- 3:01:14Middelwald is in with a double.
- 3:01:18Good quick feeling by George Foster.
- 3:01:21Boy, I wish that ball had gotten away from him low, we could have tied up the ballgame.
- 3:01:25Yes, indeed.
- 3:01:26That would have been a great job by Middelwald on that line, but credit Foster with a great play.
- 3:01:35That's a tough one to handle.
- 3:01:37He backhanded it.
- 3:01:39That's where the foul line is almost at the wall.
- 3:01:42He pushed himself off that wall where the rubber cushions are.
- 3:01:46Gave himself a little extra leverage as he wheeled and fired perfectly on a line to third.
- 3:01:52And Lowry, seeing that excellent bit of defensive work by the Reds left fielder, had to hold up Voltaveras.
- 3:01:59He had a bit of dead duck if he had tried to score.
- 3:02:04So it's a double for Middelwald, his second hit of the ballgame.
- 3:02:08Now the Cubs have the time run at third, the go-ahead run at second.
- 3:02:13And Greg Ross is now officially announced as a pinch hitter.
- 3:02:17And Sparky Anderson has veteran Joe Horner still throwing in a bullpen.
- 3:02:23Joe, of course, is a fellow who was a pitching coach at Indianapolis for the Cincinnati Reds.
- 3:02:29He was doing a little pitching down there this year.
- 3:02:32When they really got the shorts in the pitching department, they brought him up to the Major League Club and activated him full-time as a pitcher.
- 3:02:39He originally is from Dubuque, Iowa, been a well-traveled guy, and he's a veteran.
- 3:02:44But he's not going to bring him into this spot because they're going to walk Greg Ross intentionally to load the bases with two guards.
- 3:02:58Now Ross is batting for Kelleher here.
- 3:03:04Well, the Cubs issued an intentional walk to George Foster.
- 3:03:12The Reds had runners at first and second with two guards.
- 3:03:16While Foster at bat on a pitch into the dirt, both men were going.
- 3:03:21It resulted in a double steal.
- 3:03:23Then the Cubs decided they would put Foster on intentionally with first base open after the double steal.
- 3:03:30And that paid off because the next hitter, Johnny Binch, went after the first pitch and popped it up into Shadow right field to retire the side.
- 3:03:39Now an intentional walk to Yvonne DeJesus.
- 3:03:43Well, we'll bring up Yvonne DeJesus.
- 3:03:49Although Harmon, taking a look down in his bench, said something that brought a big friend to Jose Cardinal's face, and Jose gets up laughing.
- 3:04:00Harmon said something to her that busted him up completely.
- 3:04:05That's just one of the remarkable things about the Cubs skipper this year, Herman Frank.
- 3:04:10Here you are in a ball game. He's got a slender lead of a game and a half in the division.
- 3:04:16That's just one of those seesaw back and forth jobs. Everybody gets up there, seems to be swinging from the heels.
- 3:04:23He's trailing in the ball game and he goes down the bench and he puts up with Cardinal that cracked him up completely.
- 3:04:30So you've got a pretty loose Jose coming out as a contender for Yvonne DeJesus.
- 3:04:46Hard.
- 3:04:50Well, he still hasn't used Gene Klein.
- 3:04:56Davey Rosano, of course, is still available. It's a short stop. Swisher's available to do some catching.
- 3:05:02But Beniwold is still in the ball game.
- 3:05:09Jose, as a pinch hitter this year, has a remarkably good record.
- 3:05:15He's been called upon officially 11 times and has six hits as a pinch hitter, six for 11, with two runs putted in.
- 3:05:24Now, of course, he had been on the disabled list for quite a while.
- 3:05:29And when he came off, I don't know, he might have been hitting a little over 100.
- 3:05:34But since coming off the disabled list, and listen to the.
- 3:05:38Oh, how this squeaks his name as it's pronounced by Demi Enright.
- 3:05:45He has 16 for 54 since coming off the disabled list.
- 3:05:52He's been stinging the ball.
- 3:05:56So we're in the bottom of the eighth. The score, Cincinnati, 14.
- 3:06:00The Chicago Cubs, 13. And I'm not kidding you, that's a real score.
- 3:06:04Two outs, the bases loaded.
- 3:06:07Cardinal's bat is being inspected by Andy Olson.
- 3:06:12Jose folded his hand, bottle played up by our inspected. And he says, yeah, I guess it's legal. Go ahead.
- 3:06:18I can't believe this day.
- 3:06:24He's the ninth cup to come to the plate in the eighth inning.
- 3:06:28Wind up the pitch. Takes. Strike.
- 3:06:31At the knees in the inside corner. Perfect pitch by Sarmiotto.
- 3:06:44Right hander working from a wind up. Here's the pitch.
- 3:06:49Takes. Strike. And Sarmiotto hits the outside corner.
- 3:06:53You talk about pinpoint placement.
- 3:06:56The first pitch is strike, knee high, barely nicked the inside edge.
- 3:07:00The second one barely catching the outside corner at the knees.
- 3:07:04Jose is in the hole, nothing in two with two out the bases loaded.
- 3:07:08Defending 14 to 13 Cincinnati. Wind up the pitch.
- 3:07:15Takes the fastball that misses outside. He wasted it. One and two.
- 3:07:26So far only 33 hits.
- 3:07:33After the Cubs, five home runs for Cincinnati, five home runs. And now,
- 3:07:38by the now, let's ask Andy Olson to take a look at the ball.
- 3:07:41He finally gets Sarmiotto's attention. Gets the ball. Decides to, okay, keeps it in play.
- 3:07:55So the drama continues to wind up the pitch. Swung out a drive foul into the box each down the right field line.
- 3:08:02All one, strike two.
- 3:08:12Concepcion coming over to say something to Sarmiotto.
- 3:08:16The tying run, steam out of airs at third.
- 3:08:19George Minerwald, the go ahead run is at second.
- 3:08:23On at first base, pinch hitter, Greg Rose, who has walked intentionally.
- 3:08:30Now Jose Cardinal with a chance to be a hero again.
- 3:08:34The wind up on the one, two pitch. High ball, two strike two. Rising fastball.
- 3:08:46Oh man. You've got to love this kind of a game.
- 3:08:56The Reds, you know, got six runs in the first inning. They batted around.
- 3:09:00Two two pitch. Swung out a high flat ball.
- 3:09:04Unless it's a miracle.
- 3:09:06Byde is going to be retired, no miracle.
- 3:09:08Geronimo Plotter.
- 3:09:12Three runs in the eighth inning.
- 3:09:17Four base hits. Two homers, one double and a single.
- 3:09:22Two walks, one intentional. Three men left on.
- 3:09:25So at the end of eight full innings of play, don't you go away.
- 3:09:29Cincinnati coming to bat, they lead 14 to 15.
- 3:09:33Friends, now you can water your lawn without watering your house, your driveway and your guests.
- 3:09:38Just go to your True Value hardware store and get a multi-pattern lawn sprinkler.
- 3:09:43That's designed to keep the water on your lawn, not on your house.
- 3:09:47Dear friends, like the Nelson Poppy three arm sprinkler, it will swatters in squares.
- 3:09:52So you can water right up to the edge of your yard without sprinkling the sidewalk or the house.
- 3:09:58True Value hardware stores also have the Nelson Beta impulse sprinkler.
- 3:10:02It has more sprinkling patterns than the standard revolving model.
- 3:10:06So it gets those hard to reach spots without wasting water on the house.
- 3:10:10Now you can water your lawn without watering your house and guests.
- 3:10:14Get Nelson multi-pattern lawn sprinkler at participating True Value hardware stores.
- 3:10:20True Value hardware is more than just a name.
- 3:10:25It's a way of doing things that feel true value.
- 3:10:33Well, first hitter, making his first defense is just prior to the all-star break.
- 3:10:50He's thrown some on the sidelines yesterday, and during the ball game he was warming up.
- 3:10:57Now he is in as the relief pitcher in this 99th game of the season for the Cubs.
- 3:11:06Those five wins, one loss, he has worked 81 innings, has 24 saves.
- 3:11:19Davey Rizzotto is the new shortstop.
- 3:11:25And the guest was playing second base.
- 3:11:31If you said, Mosé Cardenal, you're absolutely right.
- 3:11:37Rose stepping in, he swings, ground ball to Cardenal.
- 3:11:40Down to his knees, picks it up, Rose.
- 3:11:44Dave, the first base, thought he had it.
- 3:11:49Jerry Tatum or Jerry Cropper down there on one knee, and he says he beat it out.
- 3:11:55That's going to be an error on Jose on his first chance at second.
- 3:11:59He went down to his knees to block the ball, scrambled as it bounced away from him off his chest,
- 3:12:05threw it to Buckner, and it was very, very close.
- 3:12:09But Cropper did an excellent position on it to make the call, and he says he's safe.
- 3:12:14So it's an error on Jose.
- 3:12:18Rosetto is at short.
- 3:12:20Not a burst, and Buckner at the corners.
- 3:12:22Middle ball, steal the catcher.
- 3:12:24Shooter on the hill.
- 3:12:26Rollison center.
- 3:12:28Bittner and Mercer in left and right.
- 3:12:33Now, this could be a real problem.
- 3:12:37Rosetto says, you go over, play shortstop.
- 3:12:40I'll play second base.
- 3:12:44I'm not going to have you comment on that in a minute, but we're going to find it.
- 3:12:48If he goes up the left-handed hitter, they may switch around if we get a right-handed hitter back in there.
- 3:12:59I know we've got to have an idea here in a moment, and we will, but we've got to take a moment here for this pitch, too.
- 3:13:06And sooner than a stretch delivers.
- 3:13:08Swing into the spike, whips his track one, a good fast ball.
- 3:13:12Let's pause the station identification.
- 3:13:14This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 3:13:17WGN Radio, Chicago, 27 minutes until 5 o'clock.
- 3:13:24How do you show on your scorecard that they've foot clopped?
- 3:13:28Looked like he wanted a bun, and he takes the ball outside one-on-one.
- 3:13:35I wonder if Cardinal has played in the infield before in the majors, Lou.
- 3:13:39I doubt it. I doubt it.
- 3:13:42And I wonder if that's what Permanent asked him to dug out that really cracked him up before he came out the pinch hit.
- 3:13:48Here's the pitch.
- 3:13:49Swing and a miss, and there's that real fine split-finger curve on clock ball.
- 3:13:54One and two.
- 3:13:58I want to see how they cover second when Rose makes an attempt to steal a second.
- 3:14:02He's talking to one another right now.
- 3:14:09Suiter's one-two pitch.
- 3:14:11One-hound and that's for strike three.
- 3:14:14He looks like he is back right where he was when he was at his peak this year.
- 3:14:23That for Mr. Suiter is his 96th strikeout of the year.
- 3:14:32Only Rick Russell has any more on the cup pitching stand.
- 3:14:37Rick with 101.
- 3:14:42Jose coming over from his shortstop position, he's giving Suiter a little advice.
- 3:14:46Oh, he tells Suiter, make a fuller ball, don't let it over here.
- 3:14:50That's good advice.
- 3:14:55Joe Morgan stepping in.
- 3:14:57He takes the first one high, ball one.
- 3:15:06Strikes the pitch, a little high, ball two.
- 3:15:10And he has not gone to that split-fingered curve or fork ball to Morgan on those first two pitches.
- 3:15:2314-13, the Reds lead.
- 3:15:25Morgan takes fastball and is outside.
- 3:15:28He's now going to three and oh on him and he wants another baseball.
- 3:15:34Pete Rose reached on a ground ball to Cardinal who is playing at second base after coming in as a pinch hitter.
- 3:15:42We've used Río, we've used Cadejar.
- 3:15:47Río pitch, goes after it.
- 3:15:49Bowls it back up out of the screen and it's three and one on Morgan.
- 3:15:54He had a good rip at a fastball that he just barely got under.
- 3:16:01They have five home runs, the Cubs have five home runs.
- 3:16:05They're one homer away from tying a major league record for homers by both clubs in the game.
- 3:16:10There's a swing and a nice one.
- 3:16:12There he came back with that good fork ball, three and two.
- 3:16:17But he did not use it in the first three pitches to Morgan.
- 3:16:21Maybe he was afraid, he'd throw it into the dirt for Mitt Rose to get the second on a wild pitch.
- 3:16:25I don't know.
- 3:16:26Well, he did have trouble with the baseball and since he changed it, he's thrown two strikes.
- 3:16:30There goes Rose, there's a swing, round ball.
- 3:16:33Buckner takes a play on it, it's picked up by Rosello.
- 3:16:36He throws to Buckner and he's called for a play for first baseman.
- 3:16:40Another very close one and Herman Clance is going out to beef on this one.
- 3:16:46Buckner is really hot.
- 3:16:49That was a bullet.
- 3:16:52Hit to the cup, first baseman.
- 3:16:54A tremendously hard shot.
- 3:16:56It paramed away from him.
- 3:16:58Rosello was moving over towards first base to back it up.
- 3:17:02Got it, Buckner got to his feet.
- 3:17:04He was on the bag at first.
- 3:17:06Rosello picked the ball up.
- 3:17:08Close to the end of Buckner.
- 3:17:10It appeared as though he might have had him on a close play.
- 3:17:16But Jerry Crawford has given the call to the Reds on that one.
- 3:17:20That's the third close one that he has given to them today.
- 3:17:23And Herman is really hot and he's giving it to that rookie.
- 3:17:28And they're down, no's to no's.
- 3:17:31He's out.
- 3:17:33Herman has been thrown out of all games.
- 3:17:36But he is going to continue to have this play because he is really hot.
- 3:17:41There are no's to no's and chest to chest.
- 3:17:43And Herman won't back and forth with his shoulders and his head
- 3:17:47and his heated argument for a moment lost his tap.
- 3:17:51He's got it back on.
- 3:17:53Doug Harvey is stepping between him and the rookie umpire trying to calm him down.
- 3:17:58A little eye on frame him.
- 3:18:00That's Green over there that's running against him today.
- 3:18:02That's true.
- 3:18:03And did you see Doug Harvey say he told Olson to take care of Crawford?
- 3:18:09Harvey is in front of Herman because they don't want to have any tempers here
- 3:18:15that they want to lose their head.
- 3:18:17It's all right to argue and point your point.
- 3:18:20But you've never seen Herman this upset so Crawford must have retaliated
- 3:18:24with something that really irritated Herman.
- 3:18:29Well, my man is hot jelly right now I guarantee you.
- 3:18:35He is hot.
- 3:18:37Not just for having been thrown out of the ball game.
- 3:18:40But you've got to remember this ball club, the Cubs,
- 3:18:44are in a whale of a divisional championship fight.
- 3:18:48At every call on one like that, you don't know in the long run
- 3:18:53that may be the difference between winning or losing a championship.
- 3:18:57And he's right in this ball game, a wild one, 14 to 13.
- 3:19:03He had a call and Pete Rose it was a close one.
- 3:19:07Don't put up this sign, setting.
- 3:19:09Now he gets another close one and Morgan is called safe at first base
- 3:19:13and they've got Bennett first and second but they'll be one out.
- 3:19:16You know, I don't recall seeing Buckner argue on a play that has been that close.
- 3:19:25He's at first baseman who's had a lot of close plays during the year.
- 3:19:31He's still carrying it on over there with Crawford.
- 3:19:34Now we have, and we've told you this many times,
- 3:19:37a television monitor in our booth here at Wrigley Field
- 3:19:40and we watch those replays just like you do if you're watching television
- 3:19:45at home or wherever you may be.
- 3:19:48And I thought, I thought that Morgan was out on that one at first base.
- 3:19:58Now, Gardinal is shortstop or at second base.
- 3:20:04Rosello is over at short and George Foster swings and this is for strike one.
- 3:20:10They flip flop again.
- 3:20:13And the Cincinnati Reds were retired in the top of the ninth inning by the Chicago Cubs.
- 3:20:20Then in the Cubs' half of the ninth inning, that is the bottom of the ninth,
- 3:20:25with Joe Horner pitching for the Cincinnati Reds,
- 3:20:29after two men are out, Bobby Mercer comes to the plate and singles.
- 3:20:36There's a ground ball in the right field, a nice set for Mercer.
- 3:20:41A walk to Jerry Morales sent Bobby Mercer to second base
- 3:20:46and brought up Steve Ontiveros.
- 3:20:49There we go.
- 3:20:51And there's a drive in the left field with a nice hit.
- 3:20:54Come on, Bobby. Foster has a tremendous arm.
- 3:20:57It's going to be close. He scores. He scores.
- 3:21:03And now we resume live action of the coverage of this game
- 3:21:08with Davey Rosello at the plate and the score tied in the bottom of the ninth.
- 3:21:14This is just unbelievable.
- 3:21:17There's Davey Rosello.
- 3:21:21I may have wished that ball over the head and the glove of Dave Concepcion.
- 3:21:27He leaped and he just missed it.
- 3:21:31Wish new bodies were retired here in the ninth.
- 3:21:34Now the school ball is outside, ball one, strike one.
- 3:21:38But you never know.
- 3:21:40Mercer bounced one through the right side for a hit
- 3:21:43and he is now in the dugout having scored the comes 14th and tying one of the game.
- 3:21:50There's a ball too high. Ball two, strike one.
- 3:22:00Walk to Morales who's now at second base and out of errors with a tying game single at first.
- 3:22:08Ball swung out of it. That was a little high, but he was eager.
- 3:22:12One after, two and two.
- 3:22:15That applause for station identification.
- 3:22:17This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 3:22:20WGN Radio Chicago, 80 degrees at 5 o'clock.
- 3:22:26Pitch swung out, liner to the first baseman to retire the side.
- 3:22:33I don't believe it.
- 3:22:35He just missed winning the ball game.
- 3:22:38From the liner to the first baseman.
- 3:22:42Got it right off the end of the bat and he hit it hard.
- 3:22:47Lobba's playing deep and the crowd is giving the Cubs a standing ovation.
- 3:22:52They haven't had enough.
- 3:22:54We will be playing nine innings.
- 3:22:57And in the ninth, one run, two hits, a walk and two men left.
- 3:23:04It is now tied 14 to 14.
- 3:23:08If you're in the market for a used car, come home to fireside Chrysler, Plymouth and Schaumburg.
- 3:23:14No doubt about it.
- 3:23:15You'll feel right at home in a relaxed setting that includes couches, easy chairs and plenty of hot coffee.
- 3:23:22Instead of working a fast deal in some cramped office,
- 3:23:25you'll have a fireside chat with understanding salespeople who know full well
- 3:23:30that even a used car is a big, big purchase for the average working person.
- 3:23:36Best of all, every fireside used car is thoroughly inspected.
- 3:23:40They take a lot of autos in trade, but only the cream of the crop are offered for resale.
- 3:23:46So if you want a safe, dependable auto at a price that will keep you safely within your budget,
- 3:23:52come home to fireside Chrysler, Plymouth.
- 3:23:55They're located on Gulf Road just west of the Woodfield Shopping Center in Schaumburg.
- 3:24:01Now remember, if you buy a used car from fireside, there's no doubt about it.
- 3:24:19I'm just looking over this record book, well, and we know that the record for most home runs in the game by both clubs is 11.
- 3:24:26Doesn't say here, but it's, let's see, in the National League, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati had 11,
- 3:24:36and that was in a 13-inning game in 1966.
- 3:24:41The Cubs, and the Mets back in 67 had many 11.
- 3:24:48The Cubs getting 7, and the American League record is also 11, I guess, for 9 innings.
- 3:24:53All right, Luke, let's go.
- 3:24:56First pitch strike, we're in the 10th inning.
- 3:25:01Geronimo at bat, facing Souter.
- 3:25:04Strike one pitch.
- 3:25:06Swing and a miss on that forecall.
- 3:25:09Strike two.
- 3:25:14Mercer is in the infield now at second base, and Cottadelle is in right field.
- 3:25:21Here's the pitch.
- 3:25:23Swing, a line drive down left field line, falling quickly.
- 3:25:26Mifter is there.
- 3:25:27He makes the catch.
- 3:25:29Running into the bullpen.
- 3:25:31What a great catch.
- 3:25:33Let me tell you, I don't know how many men have been in this lineup for both teams,
- 3:25:38but they have given extra effort today.
- 3:25:42It's been tremendous.
- 3:25:47Cottadelle started out at second base, went to shortstop, went to second base as they
- 3:25:53scissored down right-handed and left-handed hitters.
- 3:25:56Now Cottadelle is in right field.
- 3:25:58He holds up his hand.
- 3:25:59Here I am, out here.
- 3:26:03Here's Concepcion at bat.
- 3:26:08Strike called on the first pitch.
- 3:26:17Strike two for Concepcion.
- 3:26:29One out, nobody on base.
- 3:26:31Two strikes on Concepcion.
- 3:26:36He's lined up in pitch.
- 3:26:38Strike three called.
- 3:26:41Concepcion has called out on strike.
- 3:26:44He can't believe it.
- 3:26:46I don't believe there was any doubt in that last pitch.
- 3:26:49It looked to me right down the middle, and he took it.
- 3:26:57Now here's Lum at bat, two outs, four strikeouts per suitor.
- 3:27:03Now they're moving, they're going to switch around.
- 3:27:11Mercer's going to play shortstop, and Rosello is going to go to second because Lum is the left-handed here.
- 3:27:20Everything has happened in this ballgame.
- 3:27:26This is perhaps the first time Mercer's been at shortstop in the major leagues.
- 3:27:31Outside, ball one on the first pitch.
- 3:27:34I think, you're right on that, I'm sure.
- 3:27:37And I think he came up as a shortstop out of Oklahoma, the same as Mickey Mantle did in the low minors, didn't he?
- 3:27:45In the minor leagues.
- 3:27:46Yeah.
- 3:27:47Yeah.
- 3:27:48Ball two inside to Lum.
- 3:27:50Fred Norman, the pitcher, due up next.
- 3:27:55Two and one.
- 3:28:02I think we ought to send the scorecards to Cooper's down low.
- 3:28:06I can't read my Chinese puzzle, I'll tell you.
- 3:28:10The score, I think, is 14 to 14.
- 3:28:14There has been five home runs hit on each side.
- 3:28:20And we're in the 10th inning.
- 3:28:23This has been better than a one-to-nothing game.
- 3:28:26Oh, yeah.
- 3:28:27Strike call.
- 3:28:30Two and two on Lum.
- 3:28:34Top of the 10th inning, two outs.
- 3:28:39The pitch on its way.
- 3:28:42Low, he stayed off of it.
- 3:28:44Three and two to count.
- 3:28:51Pete Broberg warming up in the Cubs' bullpen.
- 3:28:56Herman French has been ejected from the ballgame.
- 3:28:59By Crawford.
- 3:29:00Swing!
- 3:29:03Lum strikes out.
- 3:29:05A standing ovation for Suter and the Cubs.
- 3:29:10In the 10th inning for Cincinnati, no runs, no hits.
- 3:29:14Nobody left on base.
- 3:29:16The Cubs coming to bat in the 10th inning with a chance to win it.
- 3:29:2114 to 14.
- 3:29:29Hyruman's bull style.
- 3:29:31The legendary beer from God's country is a beer brewed with sparkling,
- 3:29:37pure Wisconsin spring water in a traditional old-world way of pure brewing,
- 3:29:43double brewing, called poisoning.
- 3:29:47Poisoning is the most natural way to brew beer and the most expensive.
- 3:29:53Most expensive because it takes more time.
- 3:29:57Hyruman's old style is one American premium beer that's still full,
- 3:30:02that's fully poisoned, naturally carbonated.
- 3:30:07Poisoning is what makes old style a great light beer.
- 3:30:12Try old style and taste the difference Poisoning makes.
- 3:30:17Old style, pure brewed in God's country.
- 3:30:24Hyruman Bulling Company, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
- 3:30:34I'm not sure, but the announcement I think came from the press box
- 3:30:37with all the noise.
- 3:30:38The crowd shouting out, we're number one, and the Cubs are making Cincinnati
- 3:30:43fight for a victory if they get the victory here.
- 3:30:47But the Cubs now can win it in the bottom of the 10th.
- 3:30:5214 to 14 the score and Minterwall will lead off the 10th inning.
- 3:30:59I thought he said that Suter has at least one strikeout in the last 23 innings
- 3:31:09that he has worked.
- 3:31:10I want to go down and check it.
- 3:31:11But I wasn't sure of that, I didn't hear it.
- 3:31:15Minterwall will bat.
- 3:31:17He can hit one out of this ballpark.
- 3:31:21He hit one in the third inning, which was his seventh of the year.
- 3:31:27He hit Norman the pitcher.
- 3:31:30A tough decision coming up next.
- 3:31:32Would you remove Suter or would you let him hit?
- 3:31:37Here's the first pitch to Minterwall.
- 3:31:39Swing and a foul.
- 3:31:41There's only one thing on Minterwall's mind right now.
- 3:31:45Drive that ball out of this ballpark.
- 3:31:56Action galore here at Wrigley Field today.
- 3:32:01A little more action today than normal.
- 3:32:05Red Norman, fifth Cincinnati Red pitcher, fires a curve ball and a swing and a foul ball
- 3:32:14into the cup bullpen where Pete Broberg is warming up.
- 3:32:18Suter is due up next.
- 3:32:26All-out effort by both teams here today.
- 3:32:30They have put on quite a performance.
- 3:32:33Swing and a miss on a high curve ball and George was going for the downs.
- 3:32:38There's no doubt about that.
- 3:32:43Now Suter will bat for himself.
- 3:32:48The Cubs brass want Suter to remain in the ball game and he's going to bat for himself.
- 3:32:56Figuring that the percentages are that we're at home, we get the last three outs so anything can happen.
- 3:33:08Standing ovation.
- 3:33:11The pitch, swing and a miss and Suter left his feet.
- 3:33:16He's trying to hit one out.
- 3:33:20One strike, one out, nobody on base, 10th inning, Cincinnati and the Cubs in a tie 14 to 14.
- 3:33:28The next pitch is a called strike by umpire Olson.
- 3:33:32Here's some guy that just got in his car to go home after work and he heard you say 14 to 14.
- 3:33:37He goes, what's he drinking out there?
- 3:33:40I wish he could bring something over here.
- 3:33:42See the rest of the ball game.
- 3:33:46Two strike pitch on its way, curve ball.
- 3:33:49A line drive, eight pitch.
- 3:33:53Suter, swing us a center field on the count of one, two.
- 3:33:58How about that?
- 3:34:05And here is number one, Jose Cardenal.
- 3:34:11Short stop, second baseman and right fielder in three innings for the Cubs.
- 3:34:19Suter's on first base with the winning run.
- 3:34:22One out, the count of oh and two, Norman Curb Suter and he's single to center field.
- 3:34:31Cubs now with 19 hits.
- 3:34:34Once again, Olson asked Cardenal to put that cap completely in the pocket because if the ball is thrown behind him
- 3:34:46and the ball hits that cap, Cardenal would want to get on base.
- 3:34:56We're all set.
- 3:34:57Lum is holding Suter on at first base.
- 3:35:02The first pitch now to Jose, low, ball one.
- 3:35:13The Chicago Cubs have really fought back in this one.
- 3:35:17Cincinnati scoring six runs in the top of the first, had a six to nothing lead.
- 3:35:23It is now 14 to 14.
- 3:35:27The pitch, curve ball low, ball two to Jose.
- 3:35:34Ball two, no strikes.
- 3:35:40One out, we're in the tenth inning.
- 3:35:45Norman into the stretch.
- 3:35:47Here's the pitch.
- 3:35:48There's the strike called over the outside corner.
- 3:35:51It was not the pitch Jose was looking for, so he took it.
- 3:35:56He figured he has two more strikes coming to him.
- 3:36:01The two and one pitch on its way.
- 3:36:03Low outside, ball three.
- 3:36:06Pittner to up next.
- 3:36:15Suter checking his sides with Bloomfield, a coach.
- 3:36:19It's three and one on Cardenal.
- 3:36:22The pitch on its way.
- 3:36:24A foul out of play.
- 3:36:26Three and two now on Jose.
- 3:36:35Let's go a run or two here.
- 3:36:38If we go to the 11th, Cincinnati will have the pitcher and then the top of the order.
- 3:36:50Right now we have Cardenal at bat.
- 3:36:53Pitcher on first, one out.
- 3:36:56Bottom of the tenth inning.
- 3:37:06This perhaps is the longest game of the season for the Cubs right here at Wrigley Field.
- 3:37:15Here's the three and two pitch to Jose.
- 3:37:18Curve ball low inside, Suter was going.
- 3:37:21Ball four, it moves the winning run to second base for Larry Bittner.
- 3:37:30No action in the Cincinnati bullpen.
- 3:37:34So Norman is all alone on that mound.
- 3:37:44The Cubs were runners on first and second, one out, Larry Bittner the hitter.
- 3:37:56Don't single Larry, double so we can be sure of Suter's scoring.
- 3:38:02Concepcion playing in around Suter, keeping him close to second base.
- 3:38:07Here's the first pitch by Norman.
- 3:38:09There's a ball outside, ball one.
- 3:38:25Bittner leveling that bat over the plate.
- 3:38:29The one ball pitch on its way, curve ball swing up.
- 3:38:32Norman knocks down the line drive, close to second base, throw to first, too late.
- 3:38:38Jose was forced at second base.
- 3:38:41Let me tell you, Norman was quick thinking on that.
- 3:38:44I was looking for him to take one to show him in at first.
- 3:38:49The ball was a line drive off of his glove.
- 3:38:52He's lucky to stop that ball and have been to the middle for a base hit.
- 3:38:56He throws to Morgan covering second to force Cottenell.
- 3:39:00And the throw to first was too late as Bittner beat the throw.
- 3:39:05And now, Simon, he was upset with himself for not having fielded the ball friendly to get a possible double play.
- 3:39:12I think it would have been a double play because he had caught the ball on the line.
- 3:39:16Now Buckner will bat.
- 3:39:18Runners on first and third, two outs.
- 3:39:25And Lum is going to play behind Bittner first.
- 3:39:28It's a feeler's choice for Bittner.
- 3:39:32He's going to win it right here.
- 3:39:36Buckner the hitter, what a day he's had.
- 3:39:39Two home runs, five RBIs.
- 3:39:42Let's see if he can make it a half a dozen.
- 3:39:44The pitch.
- 3:39:45Curve ball swinging a long, fly ball foul down the right field line.
- 3:39:51Buckner trying to hit through that spot.
- 3:39:54Although right now I see Lum has moved back to a normal position.
- 3:39:59So they are not worried about Bittner.
- 3:40:02They're worried about Suter at third base.
- 3:40:07They're playing it as if a runner was on third only.
- 3:40:14Here's the one strike pitch to Buckner by Norman.
- 3:40:18He tries to buck it.
- 3:40:19Oh, a ball hit Suter.
- 3:40:21What a break for everybody.
- 3:40:23Bench through to Rose trying to pick off Suter and Suter was picked off by a mile.
- 3:40:29But Bench's throw hit Suter in the back.
- 3:40:32That throw could have gone down the left field line.
- 3:40:35It could have caromed off of Suter to any other place but where it did.
- 3:40:40It hit him squarely in the backside and it dropped right there in Rose's reach.
- 3:40:47Now time is called.
- 3:40:49Foster wants to know what's going on.
- 3:40:54He's talking the conception.
- 3:40:57Well let me tell you, Suter was picked off as Buckner tried to bunt to get the run in and to get a base hit.
- 3:41:05He's bunting for a base hit with two outs.
- 3:41:08No squeeze involved.
- 3:41:10Whenever there's two outs you can say he squeezed them in.
- 3:41:14But it wasn't a squeeze play.
- 3:41:18He now has two strikes on him.
- 3:41:21And I don't know what the conversation is going on between Foster, conception, and then conception has talked to Morgan and now to Lumb.
- 3:41:34Cubs with runners on first and third, two outs, tenth inning.
- 3:41:41If you can think of it, it has happened today here at Wrigley Field.
- 3:41:49Norman is ready. He's into the stretch.
- 3:41:52Two strike pitch, curve ball swing and a tap over the pitcher's head.
- 3:41:56Concepcion has it.
- 3:41:58Foster first in time to get Buckner who is limping very noticeably down the foul line.
- 3:42:05Anybody else or if Buckner was 100% well he could have beaten that out.
- 3:42:12But as it is, Concepcion moves across in front of second base, throws two firsts for the put out.
- 3:42:21In the tenth inning for the Cubs, another thrilling half inning, but the Cubs couldn't score.
- 3:42:28No runs, one hit.
- 3:42:30Two men left on the bases.
- 3:42:32Now we move to the eleventh inning where the Chicago Cubs 14, the Cincinnati Reds 14.
- 3:42:41Lawns come in many shapes and sizes.
- 3:42:43So do lawn-shaped mowers.

- 3:43:26True value hardware stores own their lawn chief mower factory where they design and manufacture their lawn chief mowers
- 3:43:34to exacting standards with performance, convenience, and user safety in mind.
- 3:43:39So no matter what size lawn you own, you'll find a matching lawn chief mower exclusively in participating true value hardware stores.
- 3:44:00We have been here, this game started I guess about close to four hours ago, and it's been just nothing but one bit of excitement after another.
- 3:44:14You say, how can a 14 to 14 ball game be exciting? That's not baseball. Hell it isn't. It is today. It's great.
- 3:44:25Not only will those ball players sleep well tonight, but I think 32,000 other customers will sleep well tonight.
- 3:44:34They've been on the edge of their chairs here all day.
- 3:44:38Now, Freddie Norman, he doesn't want to swing it, and he just took that first pitch and it's low for ball one.
- 3:44:44He's leading off.
- 3:44:47That's a 19 hit. Hey, Dodgers won. There's a ball too high.
- 3:44:55Dodgers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2 to 1. They just put it up.
- 3:45:01Iowa's junior union ticker is lagging. It hasn't reported it yet.
- 3:45:06There's a strike.
- 3:45:15Wind up. That one's sink low, 2 and 2.
- 3:45:19Don't ask me how many players we've used, but I know Gene Klien is still available.
- 3:45:26Steve Swisher is still available. 2 to 2 pitch.
- 3:45:29Slaps a little foul ball. I think that's all outside of the pitchers.
- 3:45:37Long time ago, Ray Burr started. They batted around in the first inning the Reds did off Ray.
- 3:45:43Had three homers in that inning, got six runs.
- 3:45:47The Cubs sent seven men to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, got four runs on two homers.
- 3:45:55So they tied a major league record, these teams, with five homers in the first inning.
- 3:45:59There's a swing, and Norman lifts a high foul out of play.
- 3:46:03Burr's worth two innings, Mueller one.
- 3:46:07Paul Ruschel, three and a third.
- 3:46:10And he did a good job, two hits and a run.
- 3:46:13Fernandez two innings, two hits and a run.
- 3:46:16Suter now is starting his third inning.
- 3:46:19They have not had a hit off him. He's struck out five.
- 3:46:25Buddy Norman battling him here to open up the eleventh inning.
- 3:46:30Rusch's next pitch high.
- 3:46:34Well, three strike two. He didn't throw that one the way he normally does it all.
- 3:46:46Buddy is their fifth pitcher.
- 3:46:50Three-two pitch. That's too high.
- 3:46:54And he did not have a good follow through on that one.
- 3:46:59Bobby Mercer took up shortstop, and I'm not making that up.
- 3:47:05He's coming over to talk to him.
- 3:47:08Nobody throwing in the bullpen.
- 3:47:10Broberg had been up earlier.
- 3:47:14They would have used Fernandez.
- 3:47:17Paul Ruschel, Donnie Moore.
- 3:47:22Now Bruce at his first appearance.
- 3:47:25I just hope that going this is a second inning, third inning, really.
- 3:47:30After five or six days layoff, I don't know whether it's bothering him or not. I hope not.
- 3:47:37Last two pitches he threw to Norman. I didn't think he threw naturally at all.
- 3:47:43Rose is in there. He's got a bunch. Gets it out in front of the mom. Picked up by Bruce. He has to throw to first.
- 3:47:48Rossello covering at first base now. Broberg gets up and starts to throw in the bullpen.
- 3:47:57When he walks a pitcher, and the last two pitches that he threw to him are very, very high,
- 3:48:04and he didn't have a good follow through at all, I have to wonder whether he's okay.
- 3:48:09Rose has sacrificed.
- 3:48:13And Grippy steps in. He has four base hits today. Two singles, a homer, a double. He's batted in four runs.
- 3:48:25Suiter's first pitch. There's a strike. And a good delivery on that one.
- 3:48:32Yackey's wallop, Baltimore, 14-2. Boston shut out Milwaukee, embarrassed them 12-0.
- 3:48:39What's going on here today? There's a swing and a miss. That was a good forkball that exploded on Grippy.
- 3:48:49The Dodgers nipped Philadelphia 2-1. You know, if the Cubs could hold on and bail this one out,
- 3:48:58they could have a two-and-a-half game lead over the Phillies, and either remain at 2 or go to 3 over the Pirates who played tonight.
- 3:49:06Swing and a miss. There again is that blazing, exploding forkball.
- 3:49:16That's Bruce's sixth strikeout. It's coming on at the start of the ninth inning.
- 3:49:22I have to say, here is the toughest man in that Cincinnati lineup in a situation such as this.
- 3:49:28That's Joe Morgan. Singled and scored on Bench's three-run homer in the first, doubled in the sixth inning, reached in an error.
- 3:49:38That was a tough, tough play, but well have been a hit for him.
- 3:49:43Joe takes and airs a strike at the knees inside corner. Suiter really firing.
- 3:49:53Thirty-six hits, five homers by each club. Runner at second to pitch. Morgan takes it high. Ball one, strike one.
- 3:50:04Remember saying back in about the fifth inning that he was listening, anywhere near the ballpark,
- 3:50:11he still had plenty of time to come out and see a lot of action. Didn't know it would be quite that prophetic.
- 3:50:18Swung one, one pitch. Swung out, he got a piece of that breaking forkball and fouled it sharply out of line of the plate in third,
- 3:50:27right back to the wall. So the count is one and two.
- 3:50:32Well, Western Union here is caught up with the ticker they have in the scoreboard.
- 3:50:36Yes, the Dodgers did win. With four hits, they beat the Phillies, two to one,
- 3:50:42with a winning run coming in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 3:50:48Don Say at a homer for their first run back in the fourth. One, two pitch. High to Morgan, two, two.
- 3:50:56Tommy John went all the way, a six-hitter. Tommy now, eleven and four for the year for the Dodgers,
- 3:51:05caught the loser four and six. Thirty-three thousand, two hundred and sixty at Los Angeles this afternoon.
- 3:51:16John, good crowd.
- 3:51:21Was that all in the outfield grass at first? Here's the pitch. Swung out, pulls it, a ground ball, knocked down by it.
- 3:51:35Morgan is jumping up and down. Mark Yanderson is already out of that dugout.
- 3:51:42He wants it to be called a foul ball, Vince. He said it was foul.
- 3:51:48Eric Crawford made the call safe. I can't believe the play that Buckner made that time.
- 3:51:55Unbelievable. Morgan ripped the shot for just a fearful incident. It looked like it would be down the line for extra bases.
- 3:52:05Buckner donned, extended his body as far as he could go, and a horse that'll die knocked them all down.
- 3:52:13He got up, he wanted to throw to the pitcher, who was not coming. And somehow he managed to get there,
- 3:52:20and Derek Crawford, with a perfect position view of it, says this time the Cubs got the call.
- 3:52:31Oh, that was close, Lou, my guy. Oh my, did you see that, Buckner? He was prone in error. I can't believe it.
- 3:52:37When he dove after that ball, actually he caught it in foul territory, but the ball was hit me, bounding, see?
- 3:52:44Mark Yanderson says that one of the umpires called it a foul ball.
- 3:52:50May be that the plate out by her. I didn't see Andy Olson. I didn't see that. I was watching the ball.
- 3:52:56I have no idea what Andy Olson called on it. That ball was a blistering shot.
- 3:53:03But I still can't believe that Buckner was able to make the stop on it, and then get to his feet,
- 3:53:09and somehow come back and win an excitingly close race with a very speedy Morgan.
- 3:53:17They got there just within an eyelash of one another. Well, Freddie Norman is out there throwing.
- 3:53:25Officially, they have been retired in the 11th inning, and it is still tied 14 to 14.
- 3:53:33Now, we normally would take time out here for commercials.
- 3:53:38I don't think we're going to have time for it right now, because Bobby Mercer is getting set to step in there.
- 3:53:45We're going to skip the commercial and stay with you here.
- 3:53:52Well, we've had just everything in the world happen out here at this ballpark this afternoon.
- 3:53:57A long time ago, Herman Franks was thrown out of the ballgame on a very, very close call at first base.
- 3:54:03It was the third one of the day. That one went to Cincinnati, and Herman got very upset about it,
- 3:54:10and eventually he got thrown out. Now, we do want to pause for station identification.
- 3:54:15This is the WGN, Chicago Cubs baseball network. WGN Radio, Chicago, 29 minutes until 6 o'clock.
- 3:54:29We looked at our television replay on that about three times, and it looked like the ball hit fair,
- 3:54:35was going over the bag, seemingly fair. First pitch to Mercer,
- 3:54:40right over his back as he ducks down, ball one.
- 3:54:48And it was a close race to the bag also. There's a swing and a let-up, and he bounces it foul,
- 3:54:54almost into their dugout behind first base.
- 3:54:57On the replay, Vince, Jack Minnibinz has also monitored back at our WGN studios,
- 3:55:04and he said that it shows that Crawford did point foul.
- 3:55:09I didn't see it in our monitor. No, I didn't either.
- 3:55:14And that's what Sparky was arguing about.
- 3:55:17Wow. I don't blame him for arguing. One-one pitch. Swung out of it. Good curve.
- 3:55:24All right, Bobby, come on. It's getting late. We're getting hungry. How about...
- 3:55:29What are you getting hungry? I've been hungry since 1.33 when this game started.
- 3:55:34I'm all right. I still had the wrong side of the scorecard.
- 3:55:39I have two.
- 3:55:42Mercer homered back in the first inning. Seems like only yesterday.
- 3:55:46That's three hits for the day.
- 3:55:49Boy, what a big one he got in the ninth inning with two outbases empty when the Cubs were trailing.
- 3:55:55He's single and eventually scored the tying run on Steve out of errors, his two-out single.
- 3:56:02Nobody on when Mercer got that base hit. Two gone. One-two pitch.
- 3:56:07They're into the dirt. Two and two.
- 3:56:10That's work. Bench and middle wall. They've been catching now for four hours.
- 3:56:15And there have been an awful lot of pitches into the dirt on both sides.
- 3:56:19Bench is dragging a little bit.
- 3:56:23Let's see. They've used arm brister. I think they've got more guys left on their bench than we have.
- 3:56:29They've got Auerbach and Bailey. They've got Knight. They've got Plummer. They've got Three of Summers.
- 3:56:37Two-two pitch. Swung on. Fouled it back.
- 3:56:41Just think how smart that Bill Berg is. He was out here and he left.
- 3:56:45I told him. He said, Bill, there's no point in you going back in. I'm not going to get out of here.
- 3:56:50He should have known that.
- 3:56:54Our telephone number for questions are...
- 3:56:59Stay with them, Bill.
- 3:57:04Sorry about those traffic reports. Two-two pitch.
- 3:57:07Oh, oh.
- 3:57:11Nailed the outside corner with it.
- 3:57:20Berman's second struck out, I think.
- 3:57:30Here's Jerry Morales, who hollered in the eighth inning.
- 3:57:37That's the last home run anybody has hit today. It was the tenth of the day.
- 3:57:41He takes the strike. It's true ball.
- 3:57:4714 to 14. Boy, that's some exciting football games with that score out here over the years.
- 3:57:55Here's the pitch. Swung out of it. That's a beautiful screwball that time.
- 3:58:00Oh, too. This Norman, as you mentioned, worked seven innings in the first game of the series.
- 3:58:05My golly. He came on in the ninth inning of this one, didn't he? Yeah.
- 3:58:12He's earning his pay this week, too.
- 3:58:18Jerry Morales, 0-2 pitch. Strike, free call. He wasn't ready for that one.
- 3:58:30Well, come on, Steve.
- 3:58:33Singled in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth with two off.
- 3:58:39Driven in two runs today with two hits. He's been on base four times as a pair of watch.
- 3:58:44He struck out his first two times up. To him, that must seem like yesterday or last week.
- 3:58:52Norman's first pitch. High, ball one.
- 3:58:58The Dodgers started their game an hour and a half after we got underway here.
- 3:59:03But they finished out on the West Coast, and they beat the Phillies 2-1.
- 3:59:091-0 pitch. Fastball foul. Back up under the screen.
- 3:59:16The Phillies got to be wondering what the heck is going on in Chicago 14-14.
- 3:59:24The best thing that could happen for them, of course, is they would still be a game and a half out.
- 3:59:28That would take a Cincinnati win.
- 3:59:33Everything in the world has happened here today.
- 3:59:361-1 pitch. Slung on. He fouls that one into the box each first base side.
- 3:59:42A paid attendance today, over 32,000. The total in the house, just under 33,300.
- 3:59:51And I've got to say that no more than a couple of thousand will have left here.
- 3:59:55Only because they've had dinner appointments.
- 3:59:59Or had to see their friendly neighborhood tavern.
- 4:00:07Or the washrooms are built. That could well be.
- 4:00:141-2 pitch. Low. Boy, I'd love to have the concessions out here today.
- 4:00:21More than 33,000 fans in a ball game now that's, what, over four hours old.
- 4:00:28And everything has happened.
- 4:00:30Ten homers, five in the first inning. 2-2 pitch.
- 4:00:35Well now he gets under it, pops it up.
- 4:00:38May have a chance to drop. Morgan's out there. Look out!
- 4:00:42Little Joe grabs it and then he was tackled by the shortstop Concepcion.
- 4:00:46Almost ran into the center fielder as Morgan went way out into left center field.
- 4:00:54But he managed to hold on to the ball.
- 4:00:59That's the second baseman way out there in left center field.
- 4:01:03Concepcion brought him down with a tackle from behind.
- 4:01:08Well on the 11th, the Cubs go down in order.
- 4:01:14Pete Proberg is now going to be the Cubs' sixth pitcher of the day.
- 4:01:20Souter worked three innings, gave up a hit, a walk, and struck out six men. No runs.
- 4:01:28Now it's up to Pete Proberg. And the score is still tied, 14-14.
- 4:01:34See, if you ever come across a 1909 Chalmers tour about, a 1910 Owen or 1915 Nevada truck,
- 4:01:41let Mr. Harrah of Reno, Nevada know about it.
- 4:01:44He needs those three models to complete his collection of vintage cars.
- 4:01:48Even without them, the Guinness Book of World Records says Harrah's 1,700 autos are worth 4 million bucks.
- 4:01:54And that makes it the greatest automobile collection of all time.
- 4:01:59There's another great collection of cars right here in Libertyville, Illinois.
- 4:02:03It's Wiles' collection of brand new six-cylinder Oldsmobiles.
- 4:02:07Choose from 150 gas-saving six-cylinder Starfires, Omegas, Cubbuses, and 88s.
- 4:02:13They're equipped in every way imaginable.
- 4:02:15Some of these sixes have nothing but the bare necessities,
- 4:02:18and some have everything from full power to stereo.
- 4:02:21In other words, you're sure to find a six-cylinder Oldsmobile equipped just the way you want it,
- 4:02:26at the world's largest Oldsmobile dealer, Wiles' Olds in Libertyville.
- 4:02:31You'll save when you buy it, save when you drive it.
- 4:02:34So come out and see Wiles' six-cylinder collection today.
- 4:02:48Well, Gene Clines is going into center field, and Pete Broberg, the new pitcher,
- 4:02:53and the only other pitchers we've got left now are starters Rick Rushell, Bill Bonham, and Mike Kruko, and Steve Rincow.
- 4:03:01Now let's see, with Clines in there, the only infielder outfielder that has not been used yet is Steve Swisher.
- 4:03:10Three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty.
- 4:03:24Twenty Cubs have been used so far, I think.
- 4:03:29And we have had Jose Cardenal play second base, shortstop. He's now in right field.
- 4:03:36We had Bobby Mercer play right field, shortstop. He's now at second base.
- 4:03:42Clines is in center. Larry Bittner has been out in left field all day.
- 4:03:47And George Middowald has been behind the plate all day.
- 4:03:51George Foster leading off. And Alavarez very deep and right inside the line of third, the right-hander takes, and Broberg misses low, ball one.
- 4:04:04Reds with 17 hits. The Cubs with 19 hits.
- 4:04:11Broberg delivers.
- 4:04:13Fastball a little high, ball two.
- 4:04:16George Foster, two singles today.
- 4:04:22And he leads the majors and homers, and he leads and runs by the end. But he has not batted in a run yet today.
- 4:04:29And now Broberg is behind him. Two-all pitch.
- 4:04:33Fastball for a strike. Two and one.
- 4:04:42It will be one of the loudest games in years.
- 4:04:49Broberg winds. Foster swings. It's a high, deep drive, right field.
- 4:04:55There's a room. Cardenal can't get to it. It's off the minds.
- 4:04:59Here's Foster in the second base.
- 4:05:02For the wall curves where the bleachers are in right field, coming back in towards the field.
- 4:05:09That ball just missed going in there for a homer.
- 4:05:12And Cardenal going up against the vines as the law moves back away from the infield, brushing up against him.
- 4:05:20Just couldn't get tracked on that ball that came down through those vines.
- 4:05:26And I think, Lou, that may have been why he couldn't catch it.
- 4:05:28This is right. He was right in that corner.
- 4:05:32I thought it was out when it first left Foster's bat.
- 4:05:36That opposite field doubled. It's got to be about the seventh double of the day.
- 4:05:43There's Johnny Bench. That's their 18th hit of the day.
- 4:05:53Bench has won a homer with two men out in the first inning.
- 4:05:58Since then he has walked twice, lined hard, flied out to right, and struck out.
- 4:06:05Here's the pitch. Very high, ball one.
- 4:06:12It's kind of a nervous quietness out here right now.
- 4:06:18The series has drawn more than any three-day series since 1969.
- 4:06:25Curveball. Then he takes it and it just missed down around the knees.
- 4:06:30Middlal rousing a bit at Andy Olson, the playdump fire on that call.
- 4:06:35Finally turns and says something to him.
- 4:06:38He thought that should have been a strike.
- 4:06:43Well, Bench in there with a count of two and oh.
- 4:06:46Makes a big difference, just one call like that.
- 4:06:51Here's the stretch. The right-hander's next pitch takes.
- 4:06:54Fastball a little high, ball three.
- 4:06:59Number 40 in the Cubs uniform.
- 4:07:02Turns his back to the hitter.
- 4:07:05Now he climbs back up the hill.
- 4:07:09Yankees beat Baltimore today.
- 4:07:11Boston shut out Milwaukee, 12-0.
- 4:07:14The Dodgers beat Philadelphia.
- 4:07:16Free-oh pitch, a fastball too high, ball four.
- 4:07:23Well, the Reds did not score in the ninth, the tenth, or the eleventh.
- 4:07:31They went down in order in the tenth.
- 4:07:35Did not get a hit in the eleventh.
- 4:07:38Matter of fact, they've only had one hit since the seventh inning,
- 4:07:41and that was the homer by Geronimo leading off the eighth.
- 4:07:45That went off for an Andes.
- 4:07:47But now they've got runners at first and second.
- 4:07:52That's going to go to a starting pitcher.
- 4:07:54There's nobody else that the Cubs can go to now,
- 4:07:57and that's staff and Penis Lowry is coming out.
- 4:08:00With Herman Franks thrown out of the ball game,
- 4:08:02in a heated argument with first base umpire Jerry Crawford,
- 4:08:07Penis is in charge of the club, and he's out there with a conference right now.
- 4:08:12And I would think, Lou, that they would be having Geronimo's sacrifice.
- 4:08:20I would think so, so I think Lowry wants to be sure that Roburg knows the setup
- 4:08:26insofar as the defensive alignment of the Cubs
- 4:08:29or how they're going to try to play this bunt if Geronimo bunts.
- 4:08:40Geronimo, a left-hander.
- 4:08:44Out of air, it looks like he may be holding back for the fourth play there.
- 4:08:48Sometimes they'll run the play where he comes up the line,
- 4:08:51and the shortstop braces to third.
- 4:08:53Here's the pitch.
- 4:08:54He swings, and he drives the foul ball into the seats down the let-be line.
- 4:08:59Going to cross him up.
- 4:09:02Now, third base coach George Sugar peers across the diamond at Sparky Anderson,
- 4:09:07whose they've flashed him the side or somebody else flashed it,
- 4:09:10and he relays it to the hitter.
- 4:09:13George Foster at second base.
- 4:09:15Johnny Benchett first in Broberg on the hill in trouble.
- 4:09:18Here's the pitch.
- 4:09:19He's going to bunt.
- 4:09:20Takes it high and tight, and he got out of the way just in time.
- 4:09:22It's one-on-one.
- 4:09:26See if they won't be having him sacrifice on this one.
- 4:09:30Fourteen to fourteen.
- 4:09:34At the end of one inning of play, it was six to four since he.
- 4:09:38Five homers have been hit then, three by the Reds.
- 4:09:42It's settled down considerably, isn't it?
- 4:09:48One-one delivery.
- 4:09:49He pushes it up, pops it up, and it drops and goes foul.
- 4:09:55Like every one foul that had runners at second and third,
- 4:09:58if it had carried in the air just an instant longer,
- 4:10:01Onoveras might have been able to get a play on it.
- 4:10:04But as I said, he was holding back for the fourth play at third.
- 4:10:08Had he been charging up the line,
- 4:10:10he would have been able to catch that in the air.
- 4:10:12And who knows, he might have even had a double play.
- 4:10:15But as it is, it's ball one, strike two.
- 4:10:21Meadowald is now going out to talk to Broberg.
- 4:10:25Since they brought him up from Wichita, it's worked nine of the third innings.
- 4:10:31He's now given up ten hits, including the double here by Foster,
- 4:10:36that narrowly missed being a homer.
- 4:10:38It tied the Major League record of 11 homers in a ballgame by both teams.
- 4:10:46Beat is one-one without a loss.
- 4:10:49Right-hander into the stretch.
- 4:10:51One-two delivery coming up, but he steps off the pitching rubber.
- 4:10:54Geronimo gets out of the batter's box.
- 4:10:59Yes, it's a single game, and we're still going at it.
- 4:11:02No rain delays.
- 4:11:04A lot of hits and a lot of runs.
- 4:11:06Few arguments.
- 4:11:10We now have Bobby Mercer at second base.
- 4:11:14That's the kind of a day it is.
- 4:11:18Broberg checks the runner at second.
- 4:11:20Here's the pitch.
- 4:11:22Swung on at a high fly ball.
- 4:11:24Bittner coming over to his left.
- 4:11:25Larry gets under it, calling for the ball, reaches up, hauls it in.
- 4:11:29Foster draws the throw and goes back to second base.
- 4:11:34By the way, Geronimo was unable to sacrifice.
- 4:11:40Now the hitter will be Dave Concepcion, the shortstop.
- 4:11:48He has two hits today and a walk.
- 4:11:51Stolen a couple of bases.
- 4:11:54Batted in two runs.
- 4:12:04It's only the twelfth.
- 4:12:09Broberg into the stretch delivers.
- 4:12:11Concepcion takes the ball, a little on outside.
- 4:12:14Man, I wish he could get him to hit into a double play.
- 4:12:23Due up next to the left end is hitting Mike Lum.
- 4:12:30Broberg working on Concepcion at feet close together.
- 4:12:33Here's the pitch.
- 4:12:34Sidearm fastball and it's low for ball two.
- 4:12:46Jack Billingham down there in the bullpen.
- 4:12:56Right at second is Foster at bench at first.
- 4:12:58Here's a high swing and the ball out to the mound.
- 4:13:01Broberg throws the second and it hits.
- 4:13:03Drop by Rosello, goes right off his club and in center field, a run score.
- 4:13:08Oh, man.
- 4:13:12He must have taken his eyes off the ball.
- 4:13:16Well, he didn't have his glove properly set, Vince.
- 4:13:19You watch how he tried to catch the ball.
- 4:13:21He tried to throw the ball before he caught it.
- 4:13:25Then the ball went right through his hands.
- 4:13:27He had the palm of his glove up to the sky.
- 4:13:30He didn't have the back of his hand to his face.
- 4:13:33Watch his glove.
- 4:13:36Taking a look at it.
- 4:13:37It almost knocked the glove off of his hand.
- 4:13:39It looks like it might have hit right on the heel of it.
- 4:13:42Then it skidded way out in the left center field.
- 4:13:45There was a check swing by Concepcion and the ball went out to the pitcher Broberg.
- 4:13:49Wheel to second to start a double play.
- 4:13:55The ball right off the glove of Rosello is playing it short and a run scores.
- 4:14:02Now they lead 15 to 14 and they have runners at first and third.
- 4:14:09No run, batted in.
- 4:14:14Boy.
- 4:14:18Tough error. Costly error.
- 4:14:22Lom steps in and he takes the ball inside.
- 4:14:26This might have been a double play ball even though Concepcion has good speed.
- 4:14:38There's the stretch and the 1-0 pitch.
- 4:14:40The rhetoric first goes.
- 4:14:41The pitch is high.
- 4:14:42Middle wall does not throw.
- 4:14:44Concepcion's third stolen base of the ball game.
- 4:14:49And it's 24th of the year.
- 4:14:57Now they're bringing the infield in.
- 4:15:01Rosello coming up almost to the edge of the grass on the left side.
- 4:15:06Bobby Mercer is playing at second base and with first base open now,
- 4:15:11they will walk Mike Lom to load them up.
- 4:15:16There's ball three.
- 4:15:19Now Champ Summers, as we mentioned earlier, is still available on that bench.
- 4:15:24And the former Cubs made the Cincinnati Reds ball club in spring training.
- 4:15:33I was so thrilled about it, I just couldn't get over it.
- 4:15:36It's going to pinch hit.
- 4:15:41It's four for 21 as a pinch hitter for Sparky Anderson this year.
- 4:15:54Fifteen to 14 scores.
- 4:15:56Cincinnati leading.
- 4:16:00One gone.
- 4:16:01The bases are loaded.
- 4:16:03Infield in hoping for a force play at the plate.
- 4:16:06Pop of the batting order is up.
- 4:16:08For Champ Summers is up and the pinch hitter takes the ball a little low.
- 4:16:13The middle wall steps out to the U-Gun of fire strikes.
- 4:16:16No place to put this guy.
- 4:16:20He got behind on George Foster who opened this 12th inning with a double that just
- 4:16:25missed being a homer into the bleachers in right.
- 4:16:29And he's now scored the lead run.
- 4:16:31Here's the pitch.
- 4:16:32Swung on a miss.
- 4:16:33Good fastball.
- 4:16:36Then a walk to Johnny Bench that Geronimo could not sacrifice on a fly ball to
- 4:16:42Vittner and left for the first out.
- 4:16:44And Concepcion, bunning on a check swing rather, got it right out to the pitcher
- 4:16:50Brillberg who was hopeful of starting a double play.
- 4:16:53But the shortstop did not handle the throw.
- 4:16:58Crossley air let a run in.
- 4:17:03Now the bases are loaded with one out in the 12th.
- 4:17:14Brillberg from the stretch delivers.
- 4:17:16Summers takes it higher.
- 4:17:24Ball to strike one.
- 4:17:28Champ for the year, eight hits and 42 at best.
- 4:17:32Three of those eight hits are homers.
- 4:17:35And four runs butted in.
- 4:17:37Brillberg's next pitch, a swing and a miss on a good fastball.
- 4:17:40He just blew it by it.
- 4:17:44Ball two, strike two.
- 4:17:46Champ steps out with a deep breath, exhales.
- 4:17:53Now sets himself back in the batter's box with a count of two and two.
- 4:17:59Base is jammed.
- 4:18:03Stretch, Brillberg's pitch, Summers swings and misses.
- 4:18:09And there are two gone.
- 4:18:16But don't think we're out of the jam because here is Mr. Rose.
- 4:18:22He's the third to lead off the ball game today.
- 4:18:29Singled in the third.
- 4:18:33It's reached on an air.
- 4:18:35He's sacrificed, received an intentional walk.
- 4:18:39Well, he's two for five today.
- 4:18:46Johnny Mitch over at third.
- 4:18:48At second is Concepcion.
- 4:18:50At first is Mike Lung.
- 4:18:53Pete Rose in the batter's box with 2,884 career hits.
- 4:19:00Tied for 20th in the all-time hit parade in the majors.
- 4:19:04Brillberg's first pitch, fastball, Rose takes it inside, ball one.
- 4:19:24Come on Pete, put them away.
- 4:19:26Here's the pitch.
- 4:19:28Another ball low and inside, he's got to come in there 2-0.
- 4:19:48Base is jammed and the bottom are in the top of the 12th.
- 4:19:51It's 15-14 sincey.
- 4:19:54Two-wall pitch coming up to Rose is on its way and it's a strike call to the outside corner.
- 4:20:00Ball two, strike one.
- 4:20:03This series has drawn 111,373, the largest attendance for a three-date series at Wrigley Field since the 1969 campaign.
- 4:20:22They had attendance today 32,155 with 33,286 total.
- 4:20:32And most of them still here.
- 4:20:34Two-one pitch, Rose takes two low, ball three, strike one.
- 4:20:38He wants another baseball.
- 4:20:44Boy, what a dilemma.
- 4:20:46Baines is loaded with two off.
- 4:20:49You've got Rose, the hitter, and you're behind him three and one.
- 4:20:54You've got to come in or forced in a run, and if you come in you better have something on it.
- 4:21:04Brillberg into the stretch, three-one pitch, Rose swings and he misses.
- 4:21:09And he adds something on it.
- 4:21:13A lone solitary figure standing in the cup bullpen area, Coach Barney Schultz.
- 4:21:25Trying to will Brillberg to get Rose out.
- 4:21:32Right-hander in the hill, runners go, three-two pitch, swing out of this, we got him.
- 4:21:38Rose flings that bat away and almost wound up at the wall. He's so hot.
- 4:21:46He strikes out, Rose with the bases loaded in the 12th, but the Reds have come up with a run.
- 4:21:52On one hit, one costly error, two off, one intentional, they leave, the bases loaded.
- 4:22:00Second time they've left him loaded today.
- 4:22:03Bob Adams batting Harry Kraft, all the way player, manager, now scouting.
- 4:22:11Welcome around to the aisles, the Cubs coming to bat in the bottom of the 12th inning since he leads 15 to 14.

- 4:23:19Also an office in Tinley Park.
- 4:23:39Well, we've got to pause a moment here for station identification.
- 4:23:42This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 4:23:45WGN Radio Chicago, 81 degrees at Midway Airport, two minutes before six.
- 4:23:53Well, Davy Rosello now has an opportunity to atone for dropping that throw from the pitcher Pete Broberg
- 4:24:01that could have prevented this Cincinnati club from taking the lead.
- 4:24:06He's facing Big Jack Bellingham, takes the first pitch of strike.
- 4:24:10Oh, what a concept he had who makes the fake in time to first base and there's one away.
- 4:24:24Guess it's part of the game.
- 4:24:25Yes, it is a part of the ballgame. There's no doubt about it.
- 4:24:29It's tough when they happen against you.
- 4:24:35Yeah, when they're so costly.
- 4:24:39Here's George Mendoval, still got a shot at him and he takes Bellingham's first pitch outside of ball.
- 4:24:48Ready, Norman could get the win even up to the loss that he suffered in the first game of the series.
- 4:24:54There's a curve and it's low ball too, but it ain't over yet.
- 4:24:59Vince Lloyd and Lil Bo draw here at Wrigley Field with Al Aldrich, our engineer, and Jack Menevich, our producer.
- 4:25:06Two-all pitch.
- 4:25:09Holy mackerel.
- 4:25:37Bellingham, here at the top, he says, I've got man, he's ready to shoot somebody.
- 4:25:47Meneval can't hit a ball any harder.
- 4:25:54Here's a guy like something's fine that just breaks the side of the crud.
- 4:26:05Were you ever in a ballgame this crazy?
- 4:26:08No, sir.
- 4:26:09What is any thrills in a ballgame? Tremendous ballgame.
- 4:26:15That's got to tie the Major League record. 11 home runs in this ballgame today.
- 4:26:22That ties the record of the majors.
- 4:26:26And Gene Klein steps in for the first time today, takes the ball inside.
- 4:26:34George Meneval, bless his soul.
- 4:26:37Yes, sir, and Rosello will give him a fine thanks.
- 4:26:41He takes him off the hook.
- 4:26:43There's a swing, he's right. Hey, hey, Klein's a good enough device.
- 4:26:49He just missed the bell ringer, but he's on with a double.
- 4:26:54Man, I thought that was going to go out of here.
- 4:27:00A double by Gene Klein on his first trip to the plate today.
- 4:27:07Oh, man.
- 4:27:10That's Sparky Anderson just sat down.
- 4:27:14He can't believe it.
- 4:27:17I want to tell you, I can't either.
- 4:27:30Now let's get him in.
- 4:27:35Gene hitting in that ninth spot when he came in.
- 4:27:42Here's Jose Cardenal.
- 4:27:45Come on, Jose, let's win it.
- 4:27:47Here's the pitch.
- 4:27:49Backs him away with a breaking ball.
- 4:27:51A slide and it didn't break much.
- 4:27:56Jose, a pitch we owe for one today.
- 4:27:58He's played right field, he's played second base, he's played shortstop.
- 4:28:03Now he can play the hero's role for the base hit.
- 4:28:07He swings, bounces one to the third base,
- 4:28:09and Rose looks flying back to second and Cardenal is on all fours.
- 4:28:15I was watching the ball and Rose and he's just getting up.
- 4:28:22Yes, he's all right.
- 4:28:23I don't know what happened.
- 4:28:26Last time I saw that happen to a cup was when Randy Humley out at Los Angeles
- 4:28:32swung and hit a little dying quail in the center field, and we looked,
- 4:28:36and there he was on all fours.
- 4:28:38He broke that knee again.
- 4:28:40Never forget that.
- 4:28:41That was in the batter's box.
- 4:28:42Yeah.
- 4:28:43But Jose was out of the batter's box, so he might have just slipped.
- 4:28:47Hope so.
- 4:28:48He gets up and he walks into the dugout.
- 4:28:50They get him out at first base.
- 4:28:54Lions are still at second and they're two ways.
- 4:29:01Now Larry Bittner, he has three hits today.
- 4:29:08Oh, man.
- 4:29:10Sexy swing and he went too far with the played up fire also.
- 4:29:15Kel Bittner-Berg wants to get out for at least an hour anyhow.
- 4:29:20He could still come out to the ballpark.
- 4:29:22He could.
- 4:29:23He's got time.
- 4:29:24He's got time for a half hour.
- 4:29:32Oh, one pitch, swung on, and he drives it fouled on the right field line.
- 4:29:39Well, I know we won't have any trouble summarizing this in about 30 seconds
- 4:29:43when it's all over.
- 4:29:44Yeah, we have to have a quick wrap-up.
- 4:29:46Minnibits always wants a quick wrap-up.
- 4:29:51You wrap this one up and we're getting coming out here.
- 4:29:57The scoreboard says we got 21 hits.
- 4:29:59I guess that's right.
- 4:30:05The score tied at 15, Billingham, Sinker, Lowell, ball one, strike two.
- 4:30:23Big wide hander ready.
- 4:30:25Here's the pitch.
- 4:30:27Swung on, driving to center field, it is caught.
- 4:30:31The round of all hauled it in.
- 4:30:35Here we go again.
- 4:30:36The Cubs in the ninth inning with two outs, nobody on, tied up the ballgame.
- 4:30:42In the twelfth inning with one out, George Midderwald, second home run of the day,
- 4:30:47ties it.
- 4:30:49We leave the winning run stranded on a liner to the center fielder.
- 4:30:58Well, we're now going in to the thirteenth inning at Wrigley Field.
- 4:31:04Would you believe that?
- 4:31:06It's Cincinnati, 15 runs, 18 hits.
- 4:31:09The Cubs, 15 runs and 21 hits.
- 4:31:14We'll be back.
- 4:31:20When you brew a beer once, you've got a good beer.
- 4:31:24But when you brew a beer twice, you've got a great light beer.
- 4:31:29A great light beer called Old Style from God's country.
- 4:31:36Heilerman's Old Styles proved in a traditional old world way called poisoning.
- 4:31:43Poisoning is the most natural way to brew beer and the most expensive.
- 4:31:48Most expensive because it takes more time.
- 4:31:52But Heilerman has been brewing beer this way since we first opened our doors back in 1853.
- 4:32:00Poisoning is what makes Old Style the great light beer it is today.
- 4:32:06Taste the difference Poisoning makes.
- 4:32:09Try Old Style. Pure brewing, God's country.
- 4:32:17Heilerman Home Company, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
- 4:32:30The 11 homers here today ties a major league record by both clubs in one game.
- 4:32:37Now Burscher is going over to shortstop and Rosetta over to second with a left-handed hitter, Ken Griffey in there.
- 4:32:44The hitter and out of errors have been at the corners of the infield all day.
- 4:32:48Broberg's first pitch swung out.
- 4:32:51Deep drive, left field, hitter back.
- 4:32:54It is bouncing around and it is in play.
- 4:33:03It is a double.
- 4:33:05And here comes Sparky Anderson out again.
- 4:33:09Paul Pryor, the third base up player, says it is in play off the top of the wall.
- 4:33:15And Sparky out of there.
- 4:33:17What's the question Doug Harvey?
- 4:33:21He does very briefly whatever Harvey said, sends Sparky back to the dugout.
- 4:33:27Griffey just missed a homer that would have been a major league record.
- 4:33:35As it is, he opens up with his fifth.
- 4:33:40As it is, he opens up with his fifth hit of the day.
- 4:33:44Bender went back there, he turned his back to the infield.
- 4:33:47He was afraid that it might go over the wall, but it did not.
- 4:33:50Thank heaven.
- 4:33:51It hit right on top.
- 4:33:52That's something.
- 4:33:57No big beef by Sparky when he went out.
- 4:33:59Morgan steps in.
- 4:34:00This is a foul up against the wall on the first base side.
- 4:34:05Well, in the twelfth inning, Foster opened up with a double that just missed a homer.
- 4:34:12The opposite side, and now Griffey opens up the thirteenth with a double the opposite side that just missed.
- 4:34:17Morgan gets under that one, gets a high foul, middle wall.
- 4:34:20May have a play.
- 4:34:22He does.
- 4:34:23He circles back and he's got it.
- 4:34:28Morgan fouls out to the catcher.
- 4:34:34Little Joe doesn't look very happy as he goes back to the dugout.
- 4:34:42Guarantee you he wasn't happy in the eleventh inning that a hot shot,
- 4:34:47which Bender made a super sensational diving stop on the ball after it hit once in fair territory,
- 4:34:55and he got out still with a bag, and he made a dive and hauled it in,
- 4:35:04and then got to his feet and won the race to the bag,
- 4:35:07and there was a big argument about the whole thing with a spare or foul or anything.
- 4:35:11Now time is called, and Rick Ruschel, who shut out the Cincinnati Reds,
- 4:35:18his second straight shutout victory here at the ballpark, is throwing in the cup bullpen,
- 4:35:24and apparently they want him, Lou, to get ready to face Foster, right?
- 4:35:28Well, no, I just think that he's there to loosen up.
- 4:35:33He's due to start Saturday night in Houston,
- 4:35:39so if the Cubs can hold him in and get a one-run lead, I think he'll be used to protect that lead,
- 4:35:45but I don't think that they will use him in a losing cause, in other words, you see.
- 4:35:51I don't know what's on Lowry's mind.
- 4:35:55He's talking, of course, to Goldberg now.
- 4:35:58You've got Foster or Bench, who you want to pitch to, what you're going to do, take the percentage,
- 4:36:03put Foster on, the leading RBI hitter in the National League,
- 4:36:08and try for a double play with Bench, hopefully, he'll hit a ground ball,
- 4:36:13and then again, you've got to think of the double play combination.
- 4:36:18You've got Mercer now moving from shortstop to second base.
- 4:36:22Yeah, they flip-flop, depending on whether it's a right-handed or left-handed hitter in there.
- 4:36:29Everybody has been used among the infielders, outfielders, with the sole exception of Steve Swisher,
- 4:36:36and they're going to put Foster on, and maybe they can get Johnny Bench to hit into a double play.
- 4:36:47So far, Bench today has hit a three-run homer, walked three times, lined hard to Bittner and Lepp,
- 4:37:00flied out to Mercer when he was in right field, and then he struck out.
- 4:37:12This is the second time this year that the Cubs at home have had a 13-inning affair,
- 4:37:17but the other one, which was with Montreal, was nothing, nothing, nothing like this barn burner.
- 4:37:24Reds with 19 hits, the Cubs with 21.
- 4:37:27There have been a total of 11 home runs hit here today, three by the Reds in the first inning,
- 4:37:32two by the Cubs in the first inning.
- 4:37:34That tied a major league inning record for homers in an inning.
- 4:37:38Now, Middowalt's shot in the bottom of the 12th that tied the ballgame is the 11th of the day,
- 4:37:46and that ties another major league record.
- 4:37:52Total home runs in one game by two teams, 11.
- 4:37:59The walk issued to Foster, and they've got runners at first and second with the one out,
- 4:38:05now Penis Lowry coming out of that dugout again, and by Golly-Loo, he's going to go to Russell.
- 4:38:09Yes, he is.
- 4:38:13Giving the big guy time to warm up down there, and he's going to face Johnny Bench.
- 4:38:18Now, this makes sense because he throws that good sicker ball, and if he's got it, of course, working properly,
- 4:38:25chances are he can get Bench to hit one into the dirt right at an infielder,
- 4:38:30and maybe we can come up with a double play.
- 4:38:33He's going to get a big hand as he comes in from the bullpen.
- 4:38:36This is the second relief appearance in this season.
- 4:38:43Rick Russell, the Cubs' seventh pitcher of the ballgame, the score in the 13th inning, still tied,
- 4:38:51since he's 15 to Cubs' 15. We'll be back in a minute.
- 4:38:55When you brew a beer in God's country, you begin with sparkling pure Wisconsin spring water,
- 4:39:08water that flows deep beneath the ground.
- 4:39:11Then you pure brew, double brew it in a traditional old-world way called poisoning.
- 4:39:19Poisoning is the most natural way to brew beer, and the most expensive.
- 4:39:25Most expensive because it takes more time.
- 4:39:29But Hylam's Old Style is one American premium beer that is still fully, that's fully poisoned, naturally carbonated.
- 4:39:39Because at Old Style, we don't aim to make the most beer, only the best.
- 4:39:46Taste the difference poisoning makes.
- 4:39:49Trial style, pure brewing, God's country.
- 4:39:56G. Hylam and Brewing Company, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
- 4:40:09Hello, Rick. You shut him out of the first game.
- 4:40:13Got his work cut out for him. He throws a couple of pitches. That's enough. I'm all right.
- 4:40:17Now, recall back in this ballgame someplace, I'm not going to say, look back at my scorecard and tell you when,
- 4:40:26although I think it was in the ninth inning, when an intentional walk was given up to set up a double play,
- 4:40:32Sparky Anderson countered with a double steal.
- 4:40:35Yes, he did.
- 4:40:36I think that's how they would break up that particular idea of the Cubs.
- 4:40:43Well, they'll have to be conscious of that possibility.
- 4:40:46There's the pitchers swinging a miss.
- 4:40:48Gets it down around his knees and Bench just whirled around in the batter's box, trying to get a hold of it.
- 4:40:55Johnny, with a free run over in the first inning, has only hit so far today.
- 4:41:02Next delivery, sexy swing, and it's a ball all the way.
- 4:41:10Cubs don't ask for an appeal. Ball one, strike one.
- 4:41:14The Dodgers knocked off Philadelphia 2-1.
- 4:41:21Here's a stretch. Side-up fastball up to him and he fouled it back.
- 4:41:25Came right up to the shoulders.
- 4:41:30And strike two.
- 4:41:40Johnny taking his time getting back in there.
- 4:41:44The go-ahead run, Ken Griffey.
- 4:41:48Exceptional speed, he's in second.
- 4:41:51George Foster, the runner at first base, this game is tied at 15 apiece.
- 4:41:59I knew you'd be shocked.
- 4:42:02Run away.
- 4:42:05Rick's pitch. Bench swings, ground ball deep.
- 4:42:08Two out of errors, goes to second. Mercer's relay, too high.
- 4:42:13He is safe at first base.
- 4:42:15And Griffey is over to third.
- 4:42:19And Bobby Mercer went, I don't know, I hope he's not hurt.
- 4:42:27You got Bobby at second base, of course, and he's not going to be the most agile second baseman in the world.
- 4:42:34I'm even surprised he was able to get rid of that ball, Lou.
- 4:42:37He did a good job of getting rid of that ball. He had something on it.
- 4:42:41And only because Foster slid into him, I think, he just couldn't put a little extra on that baseball.
- 4:42:48Turned a sail on him a little bit.
- 4:42:55So they missed the double play.
- 4:42:58Now, Rosello and Ruschel are looking to look out.
- 4:43:01Now, where do you want me, Davis? Is it on shortstop side or second base side?
- 4:43:06Because you have a left-handed batter in there, Geronimo, but he doesn't always go to the right field.
- 4:43:11He gets the opposite side a lot.
- 4:43:13And if they draw a throw to second base, where would it be best for Rosello to take the throw if Minowall throws through?
- 4:43:23I doubt very much whether Minowall will throw through or not in this particular situation.
- 4:43:29You don't want to throw that ball around too often.
- 4:43:33If you do, somebody's going to make a bad throw and you're going to score a run or move up the runners.
- 4:43:40Bench on it first with the fielders choice.
- 4:43:42They're two gone in the 15th.
- 4:43:45They're not paying any attention to Bench.
- 4:43:48Bucker deep at first base, a pitch into the dirt, Minowall scrambles, and Griffey does not advance from third.
- 4:43:57Nice, nice play by Minowall.
- 4:44:01That could easily have been a wild pitch.
- 4:44:09Rick back up in the hill with two gone in the 13th inning tied at 15.
- 4:44:15Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau here with you.
- 4:44:20Wow, what a ballgame.
- 4:44:23Here's a stretch.
- 4:44:24Ronniball swings, bouncing ball to Buckeye.
- 4:44:27He's got it right near the bag and the side is retired on an unassisted ground out.
- 4:44:32And Rick Russell comes in and does it down.
- 4:44:34Now wouldn't it be something if the Cubs could get a run in the bottom of the inning?
- 4:44:38And Rick would have two victories over the Reds in this series.
- 4:44:43That's not too hard to take, is it?
- 4:44:45Let's see if it'll happen.
- 4:44:48Bottom of the 13th at Wrigley Field, tied since he's 15 the Cubs 15.

- 4:46:10Well, Jack Birmingham, who's normally one of their starters, is this Freddie Norman,
- 4:46:18is working his second inning in relief and he will face Bill Buckner, Bobby Mercer, Jerry Morales.
- 4:46:26Let's hope it'll only be one, huh?
- 4:46:32Let's see, are they making some changes? Yeah, I think they are.
- 4:46:42Oh, it's Joe Gellano, sir.
- 4:46:51Griffey in right.
- 4:46:54Foster in left.
- 4:46:56Mike Blum, first base, Morgan at second, Concepcion at short and Pete Rose at third with Johnny Bench behind the plate.
- 4:47:03The big wide hander, Billingham, delivers to Buckner, takes a fastball high, bottom of the 13th inning.
- 4:47:11Then 40 hits out here today, 11 of them homers, 6 by the Cubs and 2 by George Minnewall.
- 4:47:182 by Buckner, 1-0 pitch, swung out, bouncing ball, Concepcion charging in, near the bag, he has it, throws to first and Buckner,
- 4:47:27lifting down the line is out, one away. I've got to say he's got a very sore leg right now, huh? Yes, yes indeed.
- 4:47:44That's a cross in front of the plate going onto the dugout. Bobby Mercer, who homered in the first inning as Buckner steps in.
- 4:47:56Bobby with 3 hits today and he's played at second base, shortstop, right field.
- 4:48:04First pitch, he takes, it's a strike.
- 4:48:09This has to be one of the craziest games of all time.
- 4:48:13Harden Al was played second at short in the outfield.
- 4:48:19Billingham misses low and away, ball one, strike one.
- 4:48:27Both benches pretty well depleted.
- 4:48:32Cubs using Rick Ruschel and Relief, they've used Norman. Now Billingham, who misses high, ball two, strike one.
- 4:48:41The good news from the west coast, the Dodgers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1. 2-1 delivery.
- 4:48:49Goes after it. With the high, flat ball, right center field, it's pretty well, Griffey coming over, center fielder, there's Geronimo.
- 4:48:56Grabs it on the warning crack and deep right center and Mercer limping a little bit as he was banged up as the middle man on the attempted double play in the top of the inning.
- 4:49:09He's going back in the dugout. Two gone, bases empty in the 13th.
- 4:49:20The batter, Rick Ruschel. Did I say Morales a while ago? I guess I did. He's long out of here.
- 4:49:28He had a homer back in the eighth inning. Billingham's first pitch is swinging a mess in a slider.
- 4:49:40Rick came out of relief in the top of the inning. 0-1 delivery. Looks at the ball outside, 1-1.
- 4:49:49Red Sox crushed Milwaukee today, 12-0. And the Yankees bombed Baltimore 14-2.
- 4:49:57As a swing and a line drive, base hit for Rick Ruschel.
- 4:50:02With two gone in the 13th, the Cubs have a shot at winning it and Steve, out of air, is going to be the batter.
- 4:50:09It was Steve in the ninth inning who tied up the ball game.
- 4:50:15After two men were retired, Mercer singled. Morales threw a walk, out of air, singled to tie it up.
- 4:50:23And then of a 12th inning, Merderwald again tied it up with his second homer of the year, of the day.
- 4:50:30It only seems like a year. Now out of airs, there's a chance to win it.
- 4:50:43Cincinnati dugout, they're trying to get somebody's attention to move them around, but I didn't see anybody, any field or move.
- 4:50:52And on the first pitch, he gets a curve in there.
- 4:50:56They don't have too many men in that dugout.
- 4:50:58No, they don't. The coaches, they've got four or five coaches over there.
- 4:51:02I wonder if they've got the bus waiting for a lot of them. This is their travel data course.
- 4:51:070-1 pitch, sexy swing, it's a ball. Ball one, strike one.
- 4:51:16They're moving now towards the five-hour mark in this ball game.
- 4:51:2213th inning tied at 15 apiece.
- 4:51:26Billingham's next pitch, fastball, then the big guy misses outside, ball through, strike one.
- 4:51:32Comes with 22 base hits. Is that right? Yeah, that's right. 22, yeah.
- 4:51:46Carball, then he can't find the strike zone with that, but it's five.
- 4:51:59Three of those hits have come off Billingham.
- 4:52:043-1 pitch, swung on and fouled off of Johnny Bench.
- 4:52:09That's all he needs, a few more foul balls to hit him.
- 4:52:17Hey, and Minterwald has done all of the catching today.
- 4:52:2711 homers have tied a Major League record.
- 4:52:32Five homers in the first inning by these two teams tied a Major League record.
- 4:52:363-2 pitch, Russell goes, base hit in the right field, charging it, is Stimpy.
- 4:52:42Russell going to third and Lowry says that's as far as you can go.
- 4:52:46Ottavias pulls a single in the right.
- 4:52:54Come on, Davey. Win it right here.
- 4:53:01Davey Rosello will be the batter.
- 4:53:10Shortstop second baseman in this game.
- 4:53:17He grounded out in the 12th inning against Billingham.
- 4:53:22It wasn't all but safe for him to go home.
- 4:53:24Well, that depends on how many enemies you've got, Davey.
- 4:53:30Second round.
- 4:53:31Here's the play, base hit.
- 4:53:33Hey, Nick, that's what it is.
- 4:53:34Russell up to the line with his arms up, raises to sprint.
- 4:53:39Minterwald, happy as he steps in the plate.
- 4:53:43The Cubs have bailed it out in an unbelievable ball game.
- 4:53:50Oh, man. Look at that jubilation down there.
- 4:53:56I don't think I've ever seen Rick Russell do as much emotion as he did when he came up the line to score the winning run.
- 4:54:06His arms up, raised, his fist flinched.
- 4:54:10Then Minterwald hugged him and look at those guys go.
- 4:54:14No worries right now, man.
- 4:54:17They are happy and light-footed as they go down to the clubhouse.
- 4:54:23Sharp contrast for the Cincinnati Reds.
- 4:54:27They lead after half an inch of play, 6-0.
- 4:54:31They lose the ball game 16-50.
- 4:54:37Can you believe that?
- 4:54:39And little Davey Rosano for the second time this year drives in the winning run of the ball game.
- 4:54:46With two out of the 13th and nobody out, it happened again.
- 4:54:51A single by Russell, a single by Ana Vérez, a game-winning single by Davey Rosano.
- 4:54:59And the unbelievable 1977 Cubs continue to be unbelievable.
- 4:55:06A run on three hits.
- 4:55:09Two men left on the bases.
- 4:55:13Cubs won it 16-15. We'll be back after this.

- 4:56:14Also an office in Addison.
- 4:56:19Well, I'm going to tell you.
- 4:56:24How do you summarize one like this?
- 4:56:27It could just be a moment or two, huh?
- 4:56:29Because there's no way in the world, you're down, if in the first place you're down six to nothing,
- 4:56:35right off the bat, and then all of a sudden you've got four of those runs back.
- 4:56:42And the next thing you know, you're in overtime, you're craving by a run in the ninth inning with two out of nobody on,
- 4:56:48you tie it up, you're craving in the twelfth inning, you tie it up, you're craving in the thirteenth inning,
- 4:56:55you've got two out of nobody on base, and you wind up winning the ballgame.
- 4:57:00Well, let me tell you, to me, Lou, that is typical of what this ball club has done so many times is here,
- 4:57:06they just, by golly, will not give up.
