- 0:00The human being consists of multiple levels of consciousness
- 0:04which interact with and impact one another, and which, from an
- 0:09evolutionary standpoint, represent a consistent trend of
- 0:14increasing power and subtlety of the consciousness.
- 0:18The consciousness of the body, the physical consciousness, is
- 0:22the first foundation the vital consciousness develops to
- 0:26provide new powers of understanding and action layered
- 0:30on top of the physical consciousness.
- 0:34When the mental consciousness develops, it adds yet additional
- 0:37powers of consciousness, again layered on top of the physical
- 0:41and vital levels. While the mental consciousness,
- 0:46as it develops, may take the lead role in guiding the
- 0:50individual, the other levels have their role and their
- 0:54influence in the decisions and actions.
- 0:57In fact, the vital consciousness is skilled at gaining the
- 1:02support of the mental consciousness for the
- 1:05fulfillment of its desires and intentions.
- 1:07Generally, as the mental consciousness works to gain
- 1:12ascendancy, it may try to exercise dominant power over the
- 1:16other levels. This may have short term
- 1:19results, but long term may wind up backfiring as it can either
- 1:25cause serious imbalances in the physical, including harming the
- 1:30general health and well-being of the physical body, or various
- 1:34reactions in the vital nature which may include obstinate
- 1:38refusal, increased vital pressure to meet its demands, or
- 1:42else, or various types of vital imbalances that may wind up
- 1:47harming the nerves or creating mental imbalances.
- 1:52The complexity of the three primary levels active here, and
- 1:56their necessary integration and harmony with one another to be
- 2:00truly effective, exceeds the capacity of the mental
- 2:04consciousness, and thus perhaps the best that can be hoped for
- 2:09is a type of truth or mutual cooperation and give and take
- 2:14situation. It is only when a still higher
- 2:19force becomes active that it can address all of this complexity
- 2:23from a position of knowledge and power.
- 2:26Srioro Bindo calls this next evolutionary stage the
- 2:30development of the supra mental consciousness, essentially
- 2:34essentially the level beyond the mind.
- 2:38In order to reach a stable basis in this new consciousness, the
- 2:42evolution needs to develop through several intermediate
- 2:46levels, such as the illumined mind, the intuitive mind, the
- 2:51over mind, et cetera, as Sri Aurobindo has described them
- 2:56elsewhere. This development occurs in
- 2:59conjunction with the coming forward of the true soul of the
- 3:02individual, the psychic being. The psychic being operates as
- 3:06the centre around which all this evolutionary development takes
- 3:10place and it is able to provide clear and direct guidance for
- 3:15the individual once it is fully active in the being.
- 3:20Sri Aurobindo notes quote At a higher stage of the evolution of
- 3:25personality, above that of the vital self, the being of life,
- 3:30the being of mind may rule. There is then created the mental
- 3:35man who lives predominantly in the mind.
- 3:37As the others live in the vital or the physical nature.
- 3:41The mental man tends to subordinate to his mental
- 3:45self-expression, mental aims, mental interests, or to a mental
- 3:51idea or ideal the rest of his being.
- 3:55Because of the difficulty of this subordination and its
- 3:58potent effect when achieved, it is at once more difficult for
- 4:03him and easier to arrive at a harmony of his nature.
- 4:08It is easier because the mental will, once in control, can
- 4:13convince by the power of the reasoning intelligence and at
- 4:17the same time dominate, compress or suppress the life and the
- 4:23body and their demands, arrange and harmonize them, force them
- 4:28to be its instruments, even reduce them to a minimum so that
- 4:32they shall not disturb the mental life or pull it down from
- 4:36its ideative or idealizing movement.
- 4:40It is more difficult because life and body are the first
- 4:44powers, and if they are in the least strong, can impose
- 4:48themselves with an almost irresistible insistence on the
- 4:52mental ruler. Man is a mental being, and the
- 4:56mind is the leader of his life and body.
- 4:59But this is a leader who is much led by his followers, and has
- 5:03sometimes no other will than what they impose on him.
- 5:08Mind, in spite of its power, is often impotent before the
- 5:13inconscient and subconscient which obscure its clarity and
- 5:18carry it away on the tide of instinct or impulse.
- 5:23In spite of its clarity, it is fooled by the vital and
- 5:27emotional suggestions into giving sanction to ignorance and
- 5:30error, to wrong thought and to wrong action.
- 5:34Or it is obliged to look on, while the nature follows what it
- 5:38knows to be wrong, dangerous, or evil.
- 5:43Even when it is strong and clear and dominant.
- 5:46Mind, though it imposes a certain a considerable
- 5:50mentalized harmony, cannot integrate the whole being and
- 5:54nature. These harmonizations by an
- 5:57inferior control are besides inconclusive, because it is one
- 6:02part of the nature which dominates and fulfills itself,
- 6:06while the others are coerced and denied their fullness.
- 6:11They can be steps on the way, but not final.
- 6:15Therefore, in most men there is no such sole dominance and
- 6:20affected partial harmony, but only a predominance and for the
- 6:25rest an unstable equilibrium of a personality half formed, half
- 6:30in formation, sometimes a disequilibrium or unbalance due
- 6:36to the lack of a central government or the disturbance of
- 6:40a formerly achieved partial poise.
- 6:43All must be transitional until a first, though not a final.
- 6:48True harmonization is achieved by finding our real center.
