Transcript
- 0:00Dayna Roselli: It's episode 275 of Vegas Revealed.
- 0:03Sean McAllister: There are a lot of Vegas influencers out there, and we speak with one of the most popular ones today.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: I think that if you're authentic, you're gonna find your audience.
- 0:13Dayna Roselli: More with Vegas Starfish coming up.
- 0:16Sean McAllister: Then, did you know that Henderson has a booze district?
- 0:20Sean McAllister: We take you there to the Vegas Valley Winery.
- 0:23Dayna Roselli: And we hit up the Las Vegas distillery.
- 0:26Dayna Roselli: All that coming up on Vegas Revealed.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Vegas Revealed, presented by Galindo Law, starts now.
- 0:34Dayna Roselli: Welcome everyone to episode 275 of Vegas Revealed.
- 0:38Dayna Roselli: Dana Roselli and Sean McAllister here, and today we are talking influencing because we are not influencers.
- 0:45Sean McAllister: We're not.
- 0:46Dayna Roselli: Sometimes we get invited to things and they say you're invited to influencer night.
- 0:50Dayna Roselli: And like, yes, I think we have influence in what we do, but we don't consider ourselves influencers.
- 0:57Dayna Roselli: We have a television show, a podcast, we get information out there.
- 1:01Dayna Roselli: We've lived in Las Vegas, we've been journalists in Las Vegas a long time, and I feel like I don't know, we have a show.
- 1:07Sean McAllister: But the online social media influencing part of what we do is not our main focus.
- 1:15Sean McAllister: Whereas there are several people where that is their main focus, and that is their job.
- 1:23Dayna Roselli: Yes.
- 1:23Dayna Roselli: What they have been able to, you know, create income doing and all that.
- 1:30Dayna Roselli: So and there are several kinds of influencers as well.
- 1:34Dayna Roselli: I mean, and it really depends on, I guess, what you consider yourself, but we've got ones that are really big on TikTok or across the board on all video platforms, right?
- 1:43Dayna Roselli: And then there's people who really use X a lot or really like threads and Facebook and or they do it all, or some are on YouTube.
- 1:52Dayna Roselli: I mean, there's all different kinds.
- 1:53Dayna Roselli: And like you were saying, there's streamers as well.
- 1:56Dayna Roselli: We see a lot of the Vegas influencer types that just walk the strip and they're live.
- 2:01Sean McAllister: Yeah, walk the strip, comment on uh things that are going around.
- 2:05Sean McAllister: Maybe there's a little news item that they'll throw in there too.
- 2:09Sean McAllister: Uh other influencers are focused more on gaming.
- 2:13Sean McAllister: They'll sit down, play a slot machine, or play uh table games and stream that out.
- 2:19Sean McAllister: Um, but then there's other influencers who like pick a topic, do a video on it, and kind of narrate the story to you as you're watching their footage roll out.
- 2:32Sean McAllister: And that's kind of the the lane that Vegas Starfish is in.
- 2:36Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 2:37Dayna Roselli: And she's very, very popular.
- 2:39Dayna Roselli: It's at one of the top, if not the top, I would say, Vegas influencers when it comes to that style.
- 2:46Sean McAllister: And certainly one of the first who came on the scene.
- 2:49Dayna Roselli: Yeah, she's really done a great job.
- 2:52Dayna Roselli: Um, and you know, it comes with controversy sometimes, it comes with conversation sometimes, but I think that's part of it.
- 2:59Sean McAllister: I was gonna say, doesn't everything online come with controversy and conversation?
- 3:05Dayna Roselli: Well, because if it didn't, right, they wouldn't be people wouldn't be sharing it and and having you know the back and forth.
- 3:11Sean McAllister: It's all engagement.
- 3:12Dayna Roselli: All engagement.
- 3:13Dayna Roselli: It's all engagement.
- 3:14Dayna Roselli: So that's kind of how it works.
- 3:15Dayna Roselli: And that's what I say when I say we're not influencers, because I just put stuff up there for our account.
- 3:21Dayna Roselli: And if someone comments, great.
- 3:23Dayna Roselli: If not, my feelings aren't hurt.
- 3:26Dayna Roselli: Well, we do like a good little conversation.
- 3:28Dayna Roselli: I mean, we always enjoy that to see people, you know, to to put up content that does engage people is great and well done.
- 3:37Dayna Roselli: And if that's your you know what you're really going for, that does take smarts and a mission and a goal to do that.
- 3:45Sean McAllister: Well, and and there is an entire science behind uh social media and getting traction with posts and linking to things and uh all of that.
- 3:59Sean McAllister: It is a science, and you know, there's a a whole group of Vegas influencers that really have that down.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: They really do.
- 4:05Dayna Roselli: And I I tell you, every day they've got stuff several times a day.
- 4:09Dayna Roselli: I'm like, wow, this is amazing.
- 4:11Dayna Roselli: Uh and they get really creative, and I think they all try and be a little bit different too, you know?
- 4:15Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 4:16Dayna Roselli: Um, because like you were saying, there's um like Jacob Orth, is that his name?
- 4:20Dayna Roselli: He's always kind of showing himself, walking around, going over different things.
- 4:23Dayna Roselli: It's just a different style um than like someone like Vegas Starfish.
- 4:28Dayna Roselli: So all the styles out there.
- 4:30Dayna Roselli: Um, but we did run into Jennifer.
- 4:32Dayna Roselli: Um, like if you see it, look at her ex account, I'll say Gen G.
- 4:35Dayna Roselli: Well, she's Jennifer Gay is her name, and it's Vegas Starfish.
- 4:38Dayna Roselli: Um, and we saw her at the American Music Award.
- 4:40Dayna Roselli: She was actually there attending, and I think she did some partnerships with Easy Foundation, maybe the Fountain Blue.
- 4:46Dayna Roselli: But regardless, we said, let's let's pull Vegas Starfish over and talk to her.
- 4:51Dayna Roselli: We talked to her, and she was in a recent television episode, but we thought, let's share it on the audio podcast too.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: I, well, I love Vegas.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: So anytime Vegas does something amazing and high profile, especially in our newest resort, it's exciting to be part of them.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: And I'm just so glad to see this many people out of the fountain blue.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: And your world has really blown up over the last, you know, five years.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, what is it like for you experiencing all these things in Vegas and then now being a part of these big events?
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: It's amazing.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: I've never anticipated this.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: My goal has always been just to show people Vegas from a person who lives here's perspective.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: But being on this side of it is a lot of fun.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: What are you looking forward to seeing tonight?
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Benson Boon.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'm a big fan.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: Is it weird for you to be in front of the camera right now?
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: Because I know a lot of time influencers don't put themselves.
- 5:39SPEAKER_03: You don't want to put yourself in front of the camera, Mom.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: I live here and I have two little kids, and we like to be out in the community all the time, so I prefer to keep a lower profile.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's okay.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: This is cool.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Like I get to hang out with all of you, so that's awesome.
- 5:52Sean McAllister: It was good to actually see Jen and not just hear her voice.
- 5:55Dayna Roselli: I know, I know.
- 5:56Dayna Roselli: It's so true, right?
- 5:57Dayna Roselli: But um, like even she was saying, you know, the styles are different for everyone, and she does what works for her, and she likes to go grab the content and stay a little low pro profile, and it works for her, that's for sure.
- 6:08Dayna Roselli: Oh my gosh.
- 6:10Dayna Roselli: The amount of views she gets and shares, and I come I end up commenting in there sometimes whether I can't hold back or I want to correct someone on something.
- 6:19Dayna Roselli: So, you know, because we go in, you know, we're just like so used to just like, you know, depending on the facts.
- 6:25Dayna Roselli: That's how we, you know, like, wait a minute.
- 6:27Dayna Roselli: Like, and it's not always like her post, but it's other people that say something that I feel like, what where did you get that from?
- 6:34Dayna Roselli: You know, I need to correct this person, so I need to jump in there because we're in a fact-based profession, which it drives us nuts when it, you know, people just gossip and whatever.
- 6:44Dayna Roselli: So um, you and I were talking a little bit about Las Vegas locally, though, earlier, saying, you know, nobody has still figured out who Las Vegas locally is.
- 6:52Sean McAllister: It's one of life's greatest mysteries and probably the best kept secret in Las Vegas.
- 6:57Sean McAllister: Seriously.
- 6:58Sean McAllister: There are a lot of secrets that happen in this city, and a lot of people end up knowing about those secrets.
- 7:06Sean McAllister: Who Las Vegas locally is, who runs that account still, I don't know.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: I know, no idea.
- 7:13Sean McAllister: It's like the Wizard of Oz.
- 7:15Dayna Roselli: I don't know.
- 7:16Sean McAllister: One of these days someone's gonna pull that curtain back.
- 7:18Dayna Roselli: We tried to have Las Vegas locally on the podcast and um we tried to figure out a way that we could do it where we wouldn't know who the person was, like if we did it over the phone, how we could disguise their voice, yeah, something to make them more comfortable, and we just couldn't you know do it.
- 7:40Dayna Roselli: So maybe we need everyone to send Las Vegas locally a note and say you should really go on the Vegas Revealed podcast.
- 7:48Dayna Roselli: Yes.
- 7:49Sean McAllister: But I don't know how it would be a great conversation.
- 7:51Dayna Roselli: It'd be weird if we had to disguise him or her her voice, though.
- 7:56Sean McAllister: Yeah, it would be weird.
- 7:57Sean McAllister: We don't want to do that.
- 7:58Dayna Roselli: No, that would be weird.
- 7:59Dayna Roselli: So, okay, the only thing that would be outed would be female or male, but then again, I guess like if he or she works someplace or something and people recognize the voice, then yeah, I don't know.
- 8:11Dayna Roselli: Maybe you're better off to say anonymous.
- 8:13Sean McAllister: What if it's like Carat Top or something?
- 8:16Dayna Roselli: I don't know.
- 8:17Dayna Roselli: I don't know if Carat Top's got time.
- 8:20Dayna Roselli: He's busy making props.
- 8:21Sean McAllister: Yeah, trying to fill that trunk with new new props for the show.
- 8:25Dayna Roselli: Oh my gosh.
- 8:26Dayna Roselli: Well, yeah, it was good to talk with uh Jennifer, as we said.
- 8:29Dayna Roselli: So that was really interesting.
- 8:30Dayna Roselli: Or a lot of influencers at the American Music Awards, obviously.
- 8:34Dayna Roselli: Um, and they were in there inside showing videos the next day of you know, that that famous Benson Boone flip that we talked about.
- 8:41Dayna Roselli: That's right.
- 8:42Dayna Roselli: They were sitting right there, so it was really fun.
- 8:43Dayna Roselli: Meanwhile, we were like editing and taking notes and doing things for our segment that we do on KCL.
- 8:48Dayna Roselli: Yeah, so it's all different um for everyone.
- 8:51Dayna Roselli: And it's interesting how people have been able to make a profession out of this.
- 8:55Dayna Roselli: Like it's I don't know if I saw this coming.
- 8:58Dayna Roselli: I saw digital media coming, but I don't know if I saw influencing coming.
- 9:03Sean McAllister: Yeah, I don't know.
- 9:04Sean McAllister: Definitely the extent that it is proliferated these days.
- 9:10Sean McAllister: It's kind of it's crazy.
- 9:11Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 9:12Dayna Roselli: Good for them though.
- 9:13Sean McAllister: Absolutely good for them.
- 9:15Sean McAllister: Hey, you know, they uh influencers put out information just like we do, and something that we wanted to kind of dive into a little bit is the booze district in Henderson.
- 9:27Sean McAllister: Henderson in the uh the southeast part of the Las Vegas Valley, and there's a little area that not only has uh a winery, but a distillery, and they're like right around the corner from each other, next door neighbors.
- 9:43Dayna Roselli: Yeah, and it's kind of near that whole area with all the car dealers.
- 9:46Sean McAllister: Yes, the Valley Auto Mall.
- 9:48Dayna Roselli: The Valley Auto Mall, yes, because I don't get out that way a lot.
- 9:51Dayna Roselli: So when we went there for the video shoot that we did with them to put together the story, um, I thought, wow, I haven't been over this way in a while.
- 9:59Dayna Roselli: So, because I think some people think Booze District, they think like the Water Street area where there's a lot of like bars and stuff, but it's a different area and it's really cool.
- 10:08Dayna Roselli: Um, this is this winery is one of like two wineries in town.
- 10:14Dayna Roselli: So it's not something that we have a lot of here in Las Vegas.
- 10:17Dayna Roselli: And we thought, you know what, let's uh let's let the locals know it's there if you don't know.
- 10:20Dayna Roselli: And also, visitors to our town, if you're in Las Vegas, some people come for a long time looking for different things to do.
- 10:27Dayna Roselli: Maybe you're a wine lover.
- 10:29Dayna Roselli: And we went in there and they make a lot of wines.
- 10:32Sean McAllister: Not only do they make a lot of wines, but they also make cider uh using apples from Gilcrease Orchard here.
- 10:40Sean McAllister: So it's literally locally grown and produced, uh, but they've got a lot of award-winning wines in their uh stable of products as well.
- 10:50Sean McAllister: So we had a great conversation, learned a lot about what goes on over there at the Vegas Valley Winery.
- 10:56Sean McAllister: Take a listen.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: It started out as I was a customer, and I brought my friends in, we made many barrels of wine.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Um, I ended up liking being around the winery, so I started volunteering.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Um, and then that's kind of how it all started.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: So you're a pioneer.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: We we were the first uh in Las Vegas, yes.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: There's only two in the valley that I know of.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Um, when it was illegal to have a winery, that's why there's wineries in Perump.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: It was based on a population cutoff, so they were smaller and allowed to have wineries in Perump, so that's why they originally had started out there.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: I think the law changed in 2016 or 17.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: So once the law changed, then we said, well, we have the space already, let's maybe see if we can carve out a little section, open a little small tasting room, and uh, so that's what we did.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: And how's that been going?
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's good, it's great.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: We love it.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: You know, we we have a good community, a lot of uh community support that we have in the neighborhood.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: We have the Henderson Booze district, we call this area.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: Um, we have a distillery and two breweries as well.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: So we kind of keep the the alcohol vibe going down here.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: So we have uh two or three larger events every year.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: We we just uh in the spring we had just had the Catalina wine mixer um last month, and uh we do a big we do a fall festival as well.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Um the smaller events we do the live music every Friday, Saturday, um, and then fill it in with the yoga and the painting and the charcuterie classes and things like that.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Um I would say on an average three to four nights a week, there's something going on here.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: We also produce um a 100% all local Nevada cider, hard cider.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Um, so and that is local Las Vegas.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: So the apples come from Gil Crease Orchards up in North Las Vegas, and we we bring it in, we ferment it, turn it into hard cider, and we have a whole collection of them right over here, anywhere from six to seven on tap most of the time.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: So um, so it's cool to have that that all local.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Um we also do we do carry a couple of Nevada wines as well that are local based out of kind of out of Perump and Armaghosa area.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: So so yeah, so it's it's kind of fun.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Grape Expectations is the Nevada School of Winemaking where people come in and make their own barrel of wine.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Um so as a group they get to come in, learn the winemaking process, and we walk them through the four steps over about nine months.
- 13:17Sean McAllister: If I want to get a group of people together to come and uh put a barrel of wine together, what is all involved?
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Um, so yeah, so you're gonna round up your friends, and then we can give you a consult consultation if you'd like to where we could talk about what kind of wine you guys like.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: Um, then we can kind of guide you in the right direction of what type of wine you'd like to make.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: So that would be the first step is getting your people together, coming in, and let's decide what kind of wine you want to make.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Then we can we'll order the grapes, and then when you come for your first visit, that's when you'll actually start the process.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: That's usually that's in the fall, usually September, uh late September or October.
- 13:53Sean McAllister: And after that, how many times do you come back to to check in on your baby, your wine baby?
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Um, you can come and visit at any time.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: We're open seven days a week.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Um, but there are four steps in them in the winemaking process that you get to participate in.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Um so the first two happen very quickly, they're one week apart.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: So let's say you crush your grapes on a Friday night, you're gonna ferment for a week and then come back for the pressing, and you actually get to operate a manual basket press and squeeze the juice out of the grapes, and at that point you put it into the barrel.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Um, then it's gonna sit in the barrel for about three or four months.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: And the third step, which happens just after the beginning of the year, is called racking.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: And so that's when we rack the wine, it's uh it's the first step in clarifying the wine.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: We remove the sediment out of the barrel that has got through through the pressing process.
- 14:42Sean McAllister: This is essentially the culmination of their winemaking experience, right?
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: So this is what we call step four.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Um they started in this in the fall.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Um, we brought in the fresh grapes, they got to crush the grapes, they got to press the grapes, um, they came in in February, they racked the wine.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Now it's time for the wine to go in the bottle, and then they get to take it home.
- 15:03Sean McAllister: And so, how many bottles uh do you actually get to take home?
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: So, one of our barrels is a 200-liter barrel, and uh it's 240 bottles.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: So, enough to last you for a little bit.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Just under a year.
- 15:15Sean McAllister: Just under a year.
- 15:21Sean McAllister: Cheers.
- 15:22Sean McAllister: Cheers.
- 15:24Sean McAllister: So that's Mike that you just heard from.
- 15:26Sean McAllister: He is the co-owner and head winemaker over there at Vegas Valley Winery.
- 15:32Sean McAllister: And if you go in, you can't miss him because he's the tall guy.
- 15:35Dayna Roselli: He's really tall.
- 15:38Dayna Roselli: I was like, wow.
- 15:40Dayna Roselli: But yeah, um, anyway, he could probably drink a lot of wine, right?
- 15:44Dayna Roselli: And not even get tipsy.
- 15:47Dayna Roselli: That's why he's the head winemaker.
- 15:50Sean McAllister: You can sample all day and be straight as an arrow.
- 15:53Dayna Roselli: Yeah, it was really cool to go over to the Vegas uh Valley Winery because uh it's right around the corner from we learned the Las Vegas Distillery, which you had been to before, but I didn't.
- 16:03Dayna Roselli: I didn't realize it was all in this close proximity.
- 16:05Dayna Roselli: So then I was like, that's why they call it the booze district.
- 16:07Sean McAllister: It is.
- 16:08Sean McAllister: And so uh we also stopped in there to get the lowdown on everything that they they create a wide variety of spirits in there, and they're delicious too.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we went in there and they were actually doing work and doing their spirit thing, whatever you call it.
- 16:26Sean McAllister: Distilling, distilling, distilling at the distillery.
- 16:30Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 16:30Sean McAllister: Whoa.
- 16:31Sean McAllister: Uh but we also had a conversation there to hear about everything that happens under their roof.
- 16:37SPEAKER_05: It's made right here.
- 16:38SPEAKER_05: You're literally, you know, steps away from where that spirit was created.
- 16:42SPEAKER_05: Right now, aging, we've got bourbon, we've got American single malt whiskey, we've got agave, and a couple other things that are in the pipeline.
- 16:49SPEAKER_05: We process the grains, uh, we do the fermentations, we do the do the distillation, we do the aging, and then we bottle everything.
- 16:55SPEAKER_05: So it's basically from grain or or syrup or whatever you want to call it to glass.
- 16:59Sean McAllister: Talk me through the facility that you have here, the different, the different parts, the different rooms that people will experience when they come over here.
- 17:06SPEAKER_05: Well, when you come here, you can go on a tour and the tour will take you through the whole entire process that walk, they walk you through everything from start to finish.
- 17:12SPEAKER_05: But basically, we have uh a large production room in one side over there, and then this is our aging room and bottling as well.
- 17:19SPEAKER_05: We've got a bottling line, and then we have the tasting room, and in the tasting room, you can get, you know, um you can buy bottles, you can have cocktails, you can get food, you can do all that stuff.
- 17:27SPEAKER_05: A lot of places just uh specialize in one thing.
- 17:30SPEAKER_05: Um, I've been doing this for quite a while, and we wanted like a uh pretty much a wide base for us for the tasting room, so we have options there, and then um, and you know, we'll just keep laying down good spirits.
- 17:41SPEAKER_05: We have currently we have a vodka that's a cane and grain-based vodka, we have a gin, um, we have coffee liqueur, we have a white rum, we have a spice rum, we have an overproof rum, and then we have American single moth aging, it's gonna be ready soon, and also bourbon and other whiskies that will be available soon as well.
- 17:57SPEAKER_05: What we do during distillation is actually we're not creating any alcohol there.
- 18:00SPEAKER_05: A lot of people think that that's when you create the alcohol.
- 18:02SPEAKER_05: What we're actually doing is just taking the water out of the out of the stuff, the alcohol that's already there.
- 18:07SPEAKER_05: So we're just intensifying that.
- 18:08SPEAKER_05: So we take it from 7% up to 50% or 60%.
- 18:11SPEAKER_05: Our stuff is uh it's more of a labor love, and we go through the whole process and our hands touch everything.
- 18:17SPEAKER_05: And you can tell a difference.
- 18:18SPEAKER_05: You can definitely tell a difference, I think you can tell a difference.
- 18:21SPEAKER_05: What differences are there?
- 18:23SPEAKER_05: Um, well, quality ingredients for starters and the care about um you know what goes in the barrel, you know, is good in and good out rather than just you know let it let it fix itself with some time in a barrel.
- 18:36Dayna Roselli: And that was distiller Johnny Verplank, and we had a great conversation with him to learn about the whole process.
- 18:42Dayna Roselli: It was a little over my head, but I'm like, I trust that you know what you're doing because it tastes good.
