Speaker 1: Let us pray. And the multitudes that went before and
• 0:04
Speaker 1: that followed cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David.
• 0:09
Speaker 1: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
• 0:12
Speaker 1: Hosanna in the highest. Matthew 21.9 My Lord, I know
• 0:19
Speaker 1: that you have called me to be a great leader
• 0:22
Speaker 1: amongst your people. As you begin to evaluate my life,
• 0:27
Speaker 1: give me the perspective and posture of Jesus. Help me
• 0:33
Speaker 1: to be confident that I get to reveal that you've
• 0:36
Speaker 1: called me to greater things. When the weight of leadership
• 0:41
Speaker 1: tries to get me to shift from my identity, I
• 0:45
Speaker 1: will stand steadfast like the colt in today's story. I
• 0:50
Speaker 1: will remain calm in my resolve to unapologetically be me
• 0:55
Speaker 1: and lead how you've created me. As I move in
• 0:59
Speaker 1: your presence, Help me to recognize my season. Help me
• 1:05
Speaker 1: to remain faithful, even when it's time for me to
• 1:08
Speaker 1: step out and live out the mission for my life.
• 1:12
Speaker 1: Like Jesus, hide me until it's my time to accelerate
• 1:16
Speaker 1: and elevate, for it is in the quiet and obscure
• 1:20
Speaker 1: moments that you are building my character and integrity, so
• 1:26
Speaker 1: that when I step into my calling, and I'm forced
• 1:30
Speaker 1: to carry my cross. I won't buckle under the weight
• 1:34
Speaker 1: of the responsibility. As I begin my triumphal entry into
• 1:39
Speaker 1: my purpose, I will look to you, Jesus, to see
• 1:43
Speaker 1: me through. In Jesus' name.
• 1:48
  Speaker 2: Amen.
• 1:51
Speaker 1: Listening to these daily prayers strengthens your relationship with God.
• 1:55
Speaker 1: Continue hearing from the Lord by listening to today's The
• 2:11
Speaker 1: Triumphal Entry In our last story, we learned about the
• 2:15
Speaker 1: silent faith of Zacchaeus and the loud faith of Bartimaeus.
• 2:20
Speaker 1: Both men were held back by sin or misfortune.
• 2:23
Speaker 3: However, everything changed for them when they came in contact
• 2:26
Speaker 3: with Jesus. Zacchaeus used his riches to feed the poor
• 2:30
Speaker 3: and destitute. Bartimaeus was blind, but had his sight restored.
• 2:35
Speaker 3: They were both examples of Jesus' power to change lives.
• 2:39
Speaker 3: Now we gaze upon the beginning of the end. The
• 2:42
Speaker 3: final week of Jesus' life begins. Although it begins with cheers,
• 2:47
Speaker 3: it will soon turn into tears. Inspired by the Gospels.
• 2:55

Speaker 2: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of

• 3:21
Speaker 2: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So

• 3:35
Speaker 2: you for your support. I'm so glad that you have
• 3:38
Speaker 2: joined us in our journey with Jesus through the Bible.
• 3:42
Speaker 2: In our last episode, we heard how the Lord brought
• 3:45
Speaker 2: healing and restoration to two different men who had both
• 3:49
Speaker 2: lived on the outskirts of society. Their encounters with the
• 3:52
Speaker 2: Son of God changed them forever and opened up a
• 3:55
Speaker 2: new life for them. Today, we'll hear how Jesus fulfills
• 3:59
Speaker 2: an ancient prophecy about the Messiah entering into Jerusalem not
• 4:03
Speaker 2: as a king at war, but as one who comes
• 4:06
Speaker 2: in to bring peace. The enthusiastic crowd caught up in
• 4:10
Speaker 2: the moment will worship and praise the one who would
• 4:12
Speaker 2: soon be led to the cross to die for our sins.
• 4:16
Speaker 2: Let's hear today's reading from God's Word. It was late.
• 4:22
Speaker 3: And Jesus was enjoying the company of Lazarus and his family.
• 4:25
Speaker 3: Laughter flowed endlessly into the night. The disciples and Jesus
• 4:30
Speaker 3: lounged at the table as Lazarus retold the story of
• 4:33
Speaker 3: his death again. The Lord smiled and looked around the room.
• 4:37
Speaker 3: His disciples, his friends, he loved them dearly and was
• 4:42
Speaker 3: joyful to see God work and move in their lives.
• 4:46
Speaker 3: He knew that hard times were ahead, but he was
• 4:48
Speaker 3: confident that they all would be steadfast.
• 4:52
  Speaker 2: All except one.
• 4:54
Speaker 3: Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, lingered at the corner
• 4:57
Speaker 3: of the table. Outwardly he was charming and witty, but
• 5:00
Speaker 3: Jesus knew what truly dwelled deep within his heart. As
• 5:04
Speaker 3: the night went on, Mary, the sister of Lazarus, emerged
• 5:07
Speaker 3: from the back of the house. She was carrying a
• 5:10
Speaker 3: large jug of ointment made from pure spikenard. She knelt
• 5:14
Speaker 3: at Jesus' feet and began to anoint his feet and
• 5:17
Speaker 3: head with the oil. The smell of the spikenard filled
• 5:20
Speaker 3: the room. Everyone in the room was unsteady. Spagnard was
• 5:24
Speaker 3: an expensive ointment used for a very specific purpose.
• 5:28
  Speaker 2: Burial.
• 5:29
Speaker 3: The disciples and other guests watched in awe as Mary
• 5:33
Speaker 3: anointed Jesus. The ointment was expensive and no doubt left
• 5:37
Speaker 3: over from Lazarus' burial. But more than the ointment itself,
• 5:41
Speaker 3: Mary was worshipping at the feet of Jesus. However, Judas
• 5:45
Speaker 3: did not find the gesture sweet. All he saw was
• 5:48
Speaker 3: money being wasted. What a terrible waste, Judas blurted out.
• 5:54
Speaker 3: All the disciples darted their eyes toward him. Judas, realizing
• 5:58
Speaker 3: he had just interrupted a holy moment, sought to recover himself. Well,
• 6:03
Speaker 3: we should save it and sell it to give the
• 6:06
Speaker 3: money to the poor. Jesus looked at Judas. He knew
• 6:10
Speaker 3: that the poor was the last thing he had on
• 6:12
Speaker 3: his mind. Jesus smiled at Mary, then spoke to Judas, saying,
• 6:18
Speaker 3: Do not harass her, Judas. Allow her to keep the
• 6:21
Speaker 3: rest of the spikenard for my burial, for the poor
• 6:24
Speaker 3: will always be among you. I, however, will not. Judas
• 6:29
Speaker 3: shrunk back in embarrassment, and Mary bowed and then left
• 6:33
Speaker 3: with the rest of the ointment. The disciples were too
• 6:36
Speaker 3: ignorant at the time to truly understand what Jesus meant.
• 6:40
Speaker 3: His time was approaching. The next day Jesus drew near
• 6:43
Speaker 3: to Jerusalem. The Passover was drawing near, and the time
• 6:47
Speaker 3: of Jesus' great sacrifice was at hand. Jesus sat with
• 6:51
Speaker 3: his disciples at the Mount of Olives. There he overlooked
• 6:54
Speaker 3: the city. He watched over the sea of faces below.
• 6:58
Speaker 3: People from all over the world had come to worship
• 7:00
Speaker 3: during the Passover. He drew a deep breath and looked
• 7:03
  Speaker 3: to heaven.
• 7:05
Speaker 2: It is time, he whispered.
• 7:07
Speaker 3: Jesus stood to his feet and walked to Peter, James,
• 7:10
Speaker 3: and John. My friends, I have a special task for you.
• 7:14
Speaker 3: Jesus smiled, and the disciples chuckled. Usually that meant Jesus
• 7:19
Speaker 3: was going to ask them to do something absurd. They
• 7:21
Speaker 3: were excited at the opportunity. Go into the village at
• 7:25
Speaker 3: the bottom of the hill. When you enter it, you
• 7:27
Speaker 3: will find a colt tied up with its mother. It
• 7:30
Speaker 3: will be unruly and dangerous. I want you to take
• 7:33
Speaker 3: it for me. If anyone asks why you are taking
• 7:36
Speaker 3: the donkey, simply say, The Lord has need of it.
• 7:40
Speaker 3: The three men did as Jesus asked. The colt jolted
• 7:43
Speaker 3: its neck back when the disciples tried to mount it.
• 7:46
Speaker 3: It flailed its hind legs and kicked back. For nearly
• 7:49
Speaker 3: three miles, the colt dragged its feet stubbornly into the ground.
• 7:53
Speaker 3: Peter was nearly kicked in the head four times, and
• 7:56
Speaker 3: James was spat on twice. The colt was truly stubborn
• 8:00
Speaker 3: and unruly. However, as it approached Jesus, its spirit calmed.
• 8:06
Speaker 3: The wild beast ceased its writhing, and stayed completely still
• 8:09
Speaker 3: before its master. Jesus approached it and stroked its face.
• 8:14
Speaker 3: The disciples were dumbfounded as Jesus mounted the colt with ease.
• 8:18
Speaker 3: Jesus descended down the Mount of Olives towards Jerusalem. Word
• 8:23
Speaker 3: spread that Jesus was on his way, the man who
• 8:25
Speaker 3: healed the blind, the man who cast out demons, the
• 8:29
Speaker 3: man who spoke with authority, the man who raised the
• 8:33
Speaker 3: dead to life, the man who fed five thousand. The
• 8:37
Speaker 3: man who spoke truth to power was approaching. Citizens of
• 8:41
Speaker 3: God's holy nation gathered at the gates of Jerusalem to
• 8:44
Speaker 3: gaze upon the chosen king. Jesus rode the colt slowly
• 8:47
Speaker 3: and the people parted like the Red Sea to make
• 8:49
Speaker 3: way for him. Hosanna, they cried out. Blessed be the
• 8:54
Speaker 3: one who comes in the name of the Lord.
• 8:57
  Speaker 2: They sang.
• 8:58
Speaker 3: They laid out palm fronds to make a pathway for Jesus.
• 9:02
Speaker 3: Some of them even removed their own cloaks for him
• 9:05
Speaker 3: to walk upon. The crowd roared with glee. They saw
• 9:09
Speaker 3: Jesus as the chosen savior that would liberate them from
• 9:12
Speaker 3: the oppression of Rome. They saw him as a wise
• 9:15
Speaker 3: and noble king worthy to sit on the throne of David.
• 9:18
Speaker 3: They wanted him to rule with power and wisdom. However,
• 9:22
Speaker 3: Jesus was not the king they expected. He was the
• 9:25
Speaker 3: chosen king and hero of God. He was the one
• 9:29
Speaker 3: whom every hero of scripture pointed to. But his mission
• 9:33
Speaker 3: was not to overthrow a temporary government. No, he had
• 9:36
Speaker 3: a much greater enemy to vanquish, the sin and shame
• 9:40
Speaker 3: that choked humanity since the Garden of Eden needed to
• 9:42
Speaker 3: be conquered. This would require Jesus to die. So as
• 9:47
Speaker 3: the people stirred and sang, Jesus said nothing. As the
• 9:51
Speaker 3: people escorted him into the heart of the city to rule,
• 9:55
Speaker 3: he remained silent, for his throne was a cross.
• 10:02
Speaker 2: In today's scripture, Jesus and the disciples are dining together
• 10:06
Speaker 2: in Bethany, the town where Mary, Martha, and Lazarus lived.
• 10:10
Speaker 2: Lazarus was with them, and as they ate, Mary entered
• 10:13
Speaker 2: into the room and began to anoint the feet of
• 10:15
Speaker 2: Jesus with an expensive oil. She wiped the oil from
• 10:19
Speaker 2: his feet with her hair, worshiping at the feet of
• 10:22
Speaker 2: our Lord without regard for what others might say or think.
• 10:26
Speaker 2: All she wanted was to show her love for Jesus
• 10:30
Speaker 2: and to anoint him and prepare him for what was
• 10:34
Speaker 2: yet to come. It was a powerful moment that was
• 10:38
Speaker 2: more symbolic and more expressive than she could have possibly known.
• 10:42
Speaker 2: The oil she used was typically reserved for burial preparations.
• 10:46
Speaker 2: She did not know, even as they had dined together,
• 10:50
Speaker 2: that Jesus was aware from that moment that his time
• 10:54
Speaker 2: was drawing very near for him to go to the
• 10:56
Speaker 2: cross and give his life. Not all were touched by
• 11:00
Speaker 2: this act of worship, however. Judas Iscariot, the one disciple
• 11:04
Speaker 2: who would fall away and betray Jesus, complained that what
• 11:08
Speaker 2: he saw is the wastefulness of Mary's gesture of love
• 11:11
Speaker 2: and worship. He argued that they could sell the oil
• 11:14
Speaker 2: and use the money to help the poor. The reality
• 11:18
Speaker 2: was that Judas wasn't really interested in the poor or
• 11:20
Speaker 2: helping anyone but himself. But we're told that he often
• 11:24
Speaker 2: took money from the disciples' purse for his own gain.
• 11:29
Speaker 2: Jesus rebuked Judas, telling him to leave Mary alone, for
• 11:33
Speaker 2: she had done what she could and all that she could.
• 11:36
Speaker 2: Jesus was telling his disciples that could still not grasp
• 11:40
Speaker 2: that his time on earth was coming to an end,
• 11:43
Speaker 2: that worship and to serve the Lord Jesus was the
• 11:46
Speaker 2: goal of life. This is why we are made. He
• 11:49
Speaker 2: was soon, very soon, to be handed over to the
• 11:51
Speaker 2: authorities and put to death. Jesus' rebuke of Judas even
• 11:55
Speaker 2: helped speed this along, as Judas soon departed to meet
• 11:59
Speaker 2: with religious leaders and agreed to betray the Lord. The
• 12:03
Speaker 2: next day, Jesus spoke with his three closest disciples, giving
• 12:07
Speaker 2: them instructions to go into the nearby village where they
• 12:10
Speaker 2: would find a donkey tied up with its colt. He
• 12:13
Speaker 2: told them to bring them to him, telling anyone who asked,
• 12:16
Speaker 2: the Lord needs them. This was more than just an
• 12:20
Speaker 2: arrangement for transportation. Jesus was fulfilling a prophecy from Zechariah 9,
• 12:26
Speaker 2: which we find recorded in Matthew 21, verse 5. Here
• 12:28
Speaker 2: it is. Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your
• 12:33
Speaker 2: king is coming to you, humble and mounted on a
• 12:36
Speaker 2: donkey and a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.
• 12:42
Speaker 2: At this time, the people of Israel were looking for
• 12:46
Speaker 2: a triumphant, conquering king who would enter the scene with
• 12:49
Speaker 2: power and dominance and overthrow the Roman government. But if
• 12:54
Speaker 2: they paid attention, they would have known that Jesus would
• 12:57
Speaker 2: be a different kind of king, for he came in humility.
• 13:01
Speaker 2: not as a military conqueror, but as the servant of
• 13:04
Speaker 2: God and the Savior who would give his life as
• 13:07
Speaker 2: a ransom for many. Just as Jesus descended the Mount
• 13:11
Speaker 2: of Olives into Jerusalem, seated on the colt, crowds lined
• 13:15
Speaker 2: the street, throwing palm fronds to the ground for him
• 13:18
Speaker 2: to walk upon. They shouted praises, saying, Hosanna in the highest.
• 13:23
Speaker 2: Cloaks were removed and thrown on the path as well,
• 13:26
Speaker 2: and the excitement was palpable. And yet, So many, most all,
• 13:32
Speaker 2: were missing the point. They wanted a Savior to fit
• 13:35
Speaker 2: their mold and make their dreams come true. They wanted
• 13:38
Speaker 2: a kingdom of their own. But Jesus had a greater purpose,
• 13:42
Speaker 2: and the people had a much greater need. The greater
• 13:46
Speaker 2: need of all is the need of salvation from sin
• 13:49
Speaker 2: and to break the chains that bound them spiritually, not
• 13:52
Speaker 2: just those who bound them physically. How often do we
• 13:57
Speaker 2: also attempt to fit God into our own plans, our
• 14:00
Speaker 2: own will, our own desires, rather than yielding and surrendering
• 14:04
Speaker 2: our lives to his purpose? Just as the crowd who
• 14:07
Speaker 2: wanted to seize Jesus after he fed the 5,000 and
• 14:10
Speaker 2: make him a king who would then cast off the
• 14:13
Speaker 2: yoke of bondage, this crowd wanted a Messiah who would
• 14:16
Speaker 2: establish Israel as a powerful nation free from the power
• 14:20
Speaker 2: of Rome. So they sang his praises, leading him into
• 14:24
Speaker 2: Jerusalem and to claim a physical throne. But soon most
• 14:28
Speaker 2: would turn away, even calling for him to be crucified.
• 14:33
Speaker 2: The very ones who said hail him would soon say
• 14:37
Speaker 2: nail him. The ones who were saying crown him would
• 14:41
Speaker 2: soon be saying nail him to the cross. The crown
• 14:44
Speaker 2: would adorn his head, would not be made of gold
• 14:47
Speaker 2: and precious stones, but of twisted thorns that spilled his blood.
• 14:51
Speaker 2: And yet it was by this blood that true freedom
• 14:54
Speaker 2: is found because there is power in the blood of
• 14:58
Speaker 2: the Lord Jesus Christ. Dear God, we thank you for
• 15:01
Speaker 2: today's scripture and how we are reminded of your love
• 15:04
Speaker 2: for us as Jesus came to Jerusalem prepared to die
• 15:08
Speaker 2: on the cross for our sins. Thank you for Jesus.
• 15:12
Speaker 2: Thank you for salvation and the forgiveness of sins and
• 15:15
Speaker 2: eternal life in you. Amen. Thank you for listening to
• 15:20
Speaker 2: today's Bible in a Year podcast. And before we go,
