- 0:00Well, good morning, St. City.
- 0:02For those of you who are here often, you're like, Oh my gosh,
- 0:05Brandon is in a shirt that's not black.
- 0:09Yeah, I was like, hey, it's summertime.
- 0:11It's finally here. That old ballpark man is back in
- 0:13gear and I'm in blue and pink because my 4 year old really
- 0:16like this shirt. And she's like, daddy, can you
- 0:18wear that shirt? I said, you know what, baby
- 0:20girl, if you want it, I can do it.
- 0:23We're going to be in Psalm chapter 1.
- 0:25If you don't have a Bible, there's one in the seat nearby
- 0:27in front of you. You can have that Bible.
- 0:29If you don't have one for yourself, Psalms is in the
- 0:32middle of your Bible. We're starting a new series
- 0:34today looking at this book of songs and praises to God.
- 0:38So we're going to spend the better half of our summer
- 0:41talking through and thinking about and considering what God
- 0:45has to say to you and I through this incredibly long but
- 0:48incredibly great book called the Book of Psalms.
- 0:52We're in the very first one called Psalm 1.
- 0:55You know, years years ago, Tom Brady, the Hall of Fame,
- 0:59incredible quarterback after he won his third Super Bowl, He's
- 1:02being interviewed on 60 minutes. He's won three Super Bowls,
- 1:06which is the pinnacle at that point of success in the NFL.
- 1:10He redefines it later on in his career, but he's got 3 Super
- 1:13Bowls to his name. He is as accomplished as it
- 1:15gets. He is already going to be a Hall
- 1:18of Fame quarterback at this point in his career.
- 1:21He's recounting that moment when they win the third Super Bowl
- 1:25with the interviewer and he's like, man, I did it again.
- 1:29The confetti's following. The fans are cheering.
- 1:32He's getting an MVP trophy, He said.
- 1:37He had this sinking, empty feeling in his gut.
- 1:42There's got to be more than this.
- 1:45How could someone who's supposed to be so happy, who's supposed
- 1:50to be so thrilled and exhilarated?
- 1:52I mean, he did it. He the goal that he and his
- 1:54teammates set out to do was achieved.
- 1:58But why was he so disappointed in that moment?
- 2:01Why was it that happiness wasn't actually the finish line?
- 2:07I think we asked a similar question.
- 2:09We're not at the we're not, you know, on the 50 yard line
- 2:12getting a Super Bowl MVP trophy. But I think many of us here
- 2:17today ask it like this. We, we've got the family that
- 2:20we've always wanted or we got the grades that we always prayed
- 2:23for. We got to the place that we
- 2:24always wanted to live in, the home that we always wanted to
- 2:27establish, that we've had moments in this in our life
- 2:29where we've reached the apex mountain of happiness and yet we
- 2:33get to the top of it and we're just like, what now?
- 2:40What now? I got to the thing that I
- 2:43thought would fulfill me. But why doesn't it?
- 2:46Why does the bank account number not feel as good as I thought it
- 2:49would feel? Why does this relationship not
- 2:52give me the joy I thought it would?
- 2:54Why is it that I'm not actually ultimately happy?
- 2:59Now we're in this message today called happiness according to
- 3:03God. And what I want to start on the
- 3:04outset is say that happiness isn't a bad thing.
- 3:07Not at all. Like it's good to be happy with
- 3:09a great cup of coffee to go and get some delicious tacos or go
- 3:13to a concert or watch your team win the Super Bowl, have family
- 3:17moments and vacations. Like God is about your
- 3:20happiness. He's actually excited for you to
- 3:22be happy. It's an idea he came up with.
- 3:25But here's the problem is happiness, more often than not,
- 3:29gets overvalued. Overvalued.
- 3:34Now we live in a world that says clear eyes, full hearts are
- 3:37happy hearts. They can't lose, right?
- 3:40But behind every picture, behind the smiles and the laughter,
- 3:45there's tantrums, there's stress, there's tension.
- 3:56If I were to look at my life and see the pictures of my family, I
- 4:00would be happy in that moment. But I know behind that picture
- 4:04are the people that make my life feel so full but also the most
- 4:09frustrating. Maybe you're like me that at
- 4:13times you over value happiness because my mood is often it not
- 4:22only adjusts, but it's enslaved to the thing I'm putting my
- 4:26happiness in that my family. If my family is going good, my
- 4:31happiness is going good. If my work is going good, my
- 4:33happiness is going good. If my relationships are going
- 4:35good, so is my happiness. It rises and falls.
- 4:38It's enslaved to what I'm putting my happiness in.
- 4:44And here's the sobering reality for all of us here today is that
- 4:47happiness is too small of a thing to live for.
- 4:53But what's God's role in happiness if he invented it, if
- 4:57he wants us to have it, but he doesn't want us to live for it.
- 4:59Ultimately, how do we actually experience happiness?
- 5:03How do we experience what's even in our founding documents as a
- 5:07country? Like, hey, life, liberty and the
- 5:09pursuit of happiness. Like it's there, it's in our
- 5:12culture, it's in the water here. God wants you to experience
- 5:20happiness. He wants you to have it.
- 5:24He wants you to know it. He wants you to be a happy
- 5:28person. We're going to learn in this
- 5:29Psalm, but that does not mean you are entitled to it.
- 5:34GK Chesterton, the famous philosopher, he said, hey,
- 5:37modern people think this, that happiness is a right.
- 5:41That is why he is so miserable. Happiness is not something we're
- 5:49owed. It is something we are given.
- 5:51It's a grace. It's a gift, not a paycheck.
- 5:56And yet most of us here today are chasing happiness down like
- 5:59it's a the one thing in life that we are owed, will pursue it
- 6:02in every arena of our life. And deep down we think to
- 6:06ourselves, if happiness, if being happy is right, then
- 6:09anything that makes me unhappy is wrong.
- 6:13There's a problem with that. That's just because there's pain
- 6:17doesn't mean something is wrong. And so you're like, wait a
- 6:24second, if being happy is wrong, do I even want to be right?
- 6:27Like Pharrell wrote that song and I feel like he's on to
- 6:30something, you know, second, I'm just happy.
- 6:34Sometimes pain doesn't mean something's wrong.
- 6:36It means that something went right, that God's actually doing
- 6:41something in the pain, in the difficulty, in the trial, that's
- 6:44actually for good. It's for your ultimate
- 6:47happiness. Because if you are chasing
- 6:49happiness as your ultimate reality, if you're chasing
- 6:52happiness overvaluing it, if it becomes the goal, then suffering
- 6:57will feel like failure, waiting will feel like punishment, and
- 7:04holiness will feel like a burden.
- 7:11And in the end, it leaves us miserable, drinking from what
- 7:16the Bible calls a broken cistern.
- 7:19It's a well that doesn't actually satisfy your quench for
- 7:25true happiness. And that's why so many people we
- 7:29know are deeply unhappy with their life.
- 7:32But what if? What if Psalm one's about to
- 7:35teach us something incredible, That happiness is not a God to
- 7:38live for, but it is something rather that the God we live for
- 7:42gives? What if God wants to give you
- 7:46happiness, but he's designed life in a way that actually
- 7:49gives you true, lasting, ultimate happiness?
- 7:52That is what Psalm 1 is going to teach us today.
- 7:54Welcome to Summer in the Psalms, where we're going to be hanging
- 7:57out with Moses and with Asaph and with King David who wrote a
- 8:01bunch of the book. We're going to be talking about
- 8:04all about the happiness dilemma. We talk about what God wants to
- 8:07talk about week after week. And I think here's the first
- 8:09thing we're going to discover today.
- 8:10Jot down this big idea if you'd like to take notes that God
- 8:13gives us a happy life through a righteous life.
- 8:18How do we have a happy life? How do we acquire it through a
- 8:25righteous life? Every single person this morning
- 8:30has a choice. The way of blessing or the way
- 8:34of ruin, the way of delight or the way of detachment from God.
- 8:41That Psalm one's going to lay before us two options, the way
- 8:45of the wicked or the way of the righteous.
- 8:47Charles Spurgeon, the famous preacher, said this, that Psalm
- 8:501 is the gate to the temple of the entire book of Psalms.
- 8:54If you're going to understand this whole book, you got to get
- 8:56Psalm one right. You have to understand what it's
- 8:58getting at. It's like a meta Psalm about the
- 9:01entire book of Psalms. So if you're ready, we're going
- 9:06to step through that gate together and discover how God
- 9:09gives us a happy life. So how does God give us a happy
- 9:12life through a righteous life? Well, first jot down this that
- 9:15God makes me happiest when I discover the pleasure of God's
- 9:19ways. When I discover the pleasure of
- 9:25God's ways, that's when I'll be happiest.
- 9:28Look at verse one with me. Blessed is the man.
- 9:31Now you're like, where is he talking about happiness?
- 9:33I don't see that word in my Bible anywhere.
- 9:35That word blessed, it could actually be translated as happy.
- 9:39That that word in the original language is talking about the
- 9:41good life, the happy life, the blessed life that you enjoy your
- 9:46life and the person who is blessed is what it talks about.
- 9:50Blessed is the man. That word blessed, it's, it's in
- 9:54your Bible at the beginning in Genesis when it's talking about
- 9:57Adam and Eve. It's talking about Mary when she
- 10:00finds out that she's pregnant with Jesus.
- 10:02It's talking about Revelation at the marriage supper of the Lamb.
- 10:05That word blessed is used all of there and it's used right here
- 10:07smack dab in the middle of your Bible to talk about, hey, here's
- 10:11how to have a good life, a life where you're satisfied and
- 10:17happy. Blessed is the one who does a
- 10:21few things first, who walks down the counsel of the wicked, nor
- 10:25stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of
- 10:27scoffers. Another way to read this verse
- 10:29is to invert it. So another way to read this is
- 10:32like this. Look at your Bible.
- 10:34It would be like miserable is the person who walks with the
- 10:37wicked, who stands with the sinners and sits with the
- 10:39scoffers. That's a way to read your Bible.
- 10:43There. It's to go wait a second.
- 10:44If happiness is what God wants to give me through this, then
- 10:47misery is the inversion of that. And he says that we do three
- 10:53things. The miserable person walks.
- 10:55This just means walking with the wicked is the idea that your
- 10:58worldview comes from the wicked. It doesn't come from God's word.
- 11:01It comes from the ways of the world, the ways of the wicked.
- 11:05So they don't take advice or their purpose from God's people
- 11:09or God's Word, but rather they get it from just whatever they
- 11:12grew up believing the second word there.
- 11:17They don't just walk in the counsel of the wicked.
- 11:19They stand in the way of sinners, that this is a
- 11:21progression. Not only do they have the
- 11:22worldview, but now they are among the world and they are
- 11:25advocating for what the world advocates.
- 11:29They stand for the way that sinners choose to live, join
- 11:33them going to sinful places for sinful reasons.
- 11:36They stand in the way of sinners, and then ultimately
- 11:41that path leads to a place of ruin where they sit in the seat
- 11:45of scoffers. Scoffers are the people who mock
- 11:51God. They're hecklers of God sitting
- 11:55in the grandstands saying how awful God is, how judgmental God
- 11:59is, how angry God is, without any actual understanding of who
- 12:03God has revealed himself to be. All that awaits this person
- 12:10ultimately from ignoring and disobeying God's ways is misery.
- 12:18God is saying that chasing what the world is after isn't where
- 12:21you actually discover happiness, but actually your heart.
- 12:25You were born to want things, to chase things, to pursue things
- 12:30that ultimately lead to misery and pain and hurts.
- 12:35Ultimately, not immediately. We'll get to that later in the
- 12:38Psalm, but if you are marked by the world, you are marked
- 12:44ultimately for disappointment, for unmet expectations.
- 12:52Here's where God is kind to us and loving to us this morning.
- 12:54Here's what he says. He says, wait a second.
- 12:56I want to tell you the truth. That path leads you to nowhere
- 12:59good. Let me show you the path that
- 13:01actually leads you to what you want to enjoy your life.
- 13:05I want to show you that God saying it's wildly loving of
- 13:08God. He's saying pursuing happiness
- 13:11in anything contrary to his ways will hurt you because that's not
- 13:14what you were made for. You were not made for chasing
- 13:18things that God didn't make. It's discovered by delighting in
- 13:24God's ways because you were made for God.
- 13:32Now, if you were to go over the Grand Canyon later this
- 13:34afternoon, just take a nice little 3 hour drive up north and
- 13:39over on those on the trails that you'd be hiking, you'd see signs
- 13:43that say, hey, be careful, do not cross this because it's
- 13:47dangerous to you. Would you interpret those signs
- 13:50as judgmental of people who like walking on the other side of the
- 13:54trail? Would you interpret that sign as
- 13:57man, that sign, that sign, they don't know me, I could handle
- 14:04it. That signs doesn't like people
- 14:10like me. They don't like the people who
- 14:12live life on the edge. Would you really give the sign
- 14:15that kind of like motive? No, you'd be like, hey, that
- 14:19signs there because it's saying, hey, don't hurt yourself.
- 14:25Some of us read the Bible. We're like, whatever God says,
- 14:27don't do something. We're like, hey, he's coming
- 14:29across judgmental here. He's coming across angry here.
- 14:33He's coming across in a way that says, hey, I don't want you to
- 14:36have any fun. But what if every command God
- 14:41gives isn't for your misery, it's for your protection?
- 14:44What if every command God gives isn't so that you would be
- 14:47disappointed in this life, but so that you'd be happy in this
- 14:50life? That every command in this book
- 14:52is ultimately so that you could experience life as God intended
- 14:56it to be lived? God's commands are a loving,
- 15:06kind, and good thing for us. And happy is the person who
- 15:13walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of
- 15:16sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers.
- 15:18Because we believe in the pleasure of God's ways, we've
- 15:23discovered it together. God wants us to be happy and to
- 15:28flourish, but we have to discover the pleasure of God's
- 15:31ways 1st, and then we'll get to what He says next.
- 15:33Verse 2, God makes me happy. He's not just when I discover
- 15:36the pleasure of His ways, but verse 2, His delight.
- 15:40Where's His happiness found? See that word in?
- 15:43I want you to circle it in your Bible.
- 15:44Where is the person who's happy? Where is their delight found in
- 15:48the law of the Lord? And on His law He meditates day
- 15:54and night. So I want you to jot down this
- 15:56second point, that God makes me happiest when I fill my brain
- 16:01with God's thoughts. Your life will be better, your
- 16:10life will be happier when it is filled with God's thoughts, not
- 16:14the world's thoughts. Now that word law there, his
- 16:17delight is in the law of the Lord.
- 16:19You see that there in verse 2. It's not saying law like a law
- 16:23book or a book of regulations. It's not your, your company's HR
- 16:28policy. That's not what it's talking
- 16:29about here. It's talking about the Bible.
- 16:35It's talking about Scripture. It's talking about God breathed
- 16:39very inspired words of God. And like I said, it's a meta
- 16:44verse. It's a meta chapter talking
- 16:46about all of the Bible here. It's saying, hey, the person who
- 16:49is happy is their delight is found not in what they think,
- 16:54not what others think, but rather what does God say that
- 16:58when the word and the world disagree, they bend to the word,
- 17:03they fill their brain with God's thoughts.
- 17:07You will never delight in God's ways unless you delight in God's
- 17:10Book. You just won't.
- 17:14If this isn't a delight to you, if is, this isn't pleasurable to
- 17:19you. If this isn't sweet to you, you
- 17:25won't ultimately appreciate God's ways.
- 17:27That's what we're called to live as is people who delight in
- 17:31God's ways and the person who delights in God, God's ways.
- 17:36Here's what they do with the Word on the Bible, on his law.
- 17:40What do they do? What's the verb there in the
- 17:42sentence? That person does something.
- 17:45They meditate on the law day and night, meaning all the time.
- 17:51It's saying God's word is filling your mind, not just on
- 17:54Sunday mornings from 10:30 to 11:10 when a guy in a bright
- 17:58blue and pink shirt is talking to you.
- 18:01That's not when. That's not just when you're
- 18:03thinking about God's words. God's words are on your mind and
- 18:06on your heart. When you rise, when you go to
- 18:08lunch, when you commute, when you're parenting all the time.
- 18:12Your brain is filled with what does God say about that?
- 18:16Your brain is filled with God's words.
- 18:20We're no stranger to filling our minds with things.
- 18:22A doom scrolling is a term for a reason.
- 18:24It's 'cause we're filling our brains with things.
- 18:26The algorithm is actually a great feeder of thoughts for us.
- 18:33That it's holding up a mirror to you.
- 18:34Anytime you go on any social media profile, it's reading you
- 18:38as you're engaging with it. It's showing you the things that
- 18:41you care about, whether it's landscaping or golf, whether
- 18:45it's like Marie Kondo organizing your house, whether it's
- 18:51parenting tips or study hacks, whatever the thing you are
- 18:56caring about, whether the thing that you delight and guess what,
- 18:58the algorithm's going to show it to you.
- 19:00It wants to fill your brain with thoughts and capture your
- 19:04attention. John Piper, the famous preacher
- 19:09from Minnesota, says that when we get to the end of the line,
- 19:15when glory happens, when Jesus comes back, that social media
- 19:18will be proved positive that we weren't in our Bible.
- 19:22Not because we didn't have time, but because we lacked love for
- 19:26it. It'll be evidence that the
- 19:32amount of time we spend in our Bible isn't because we didn't
- 19:35have the time, it's because we didn't make the time to fill our
- 19:38brain with God's thoughts. The happy person let's God shape
- 19:42their mind rather than the world.
- 19:46But the world will also tell you another thing.
- 19:48It'll also tell you to empty your mind.
- 19:52That meditation in 2026 is more often not correlated with
- 19:56filling your mind, but emptying it.
- 19:59To just go to a space and to meditate.
- 20:03That's not what this word means here.
- 20:06It means to fill it. God is not asking you to
- 20:13completely empty your mind all the time.
- 20:15That's not what meditation is. Because if you look deeper
- 20:19inside of yourself, you're going to be disappointed.
- 20:23So the deeper you go inside the human heart, the more anxiety
- 20:26you find. The deeper you go into the human
- 20:29heart, the more anger you discover.
- 20:32The deeper you go, the more selfishness, the more sin you
- 20:35will find. So that's why therapy in in and
- 20:40of itself is not a gospel. It is not good news to just go
- 20:44and empty your mind because guess what?
- 20:46You will just keep discovering you're a bottomless well of
- 20:49sinfulness. You need another antidote.
- 20:52You need another solution. You need something better.
- 20:56You need Psalm one, verse 2, that the person who's happiest,
- 21:01who's living a righteous life, is meditating on God's words.
- 21:05They are filling their brain because ultimate happiness can't
- 21:10be located inside of us. The hope isn't in us, it's in
- 21:14him and what he's done for us. God says the person who's happy
- 21:21fills their mind with his words, which never return empty or
- 21:25void. They always deliver on what they
- 21:28say they're going to do. And that is how your life can be
- 21:30filled with delight and pleasure and flourishing and happiness.
- 21:36So what do you do? How do you fill your mind?
- 21:37Let's get real practical here. First, you fill your mind daily,
- 21:41daily filling your mind with this book daily.
- 21:45Go after God's word and just fill your mind with it.
- 21:47Sometimes it starts with just having a verse a day.
- 21:51Take that verse and just think about it all day.
- 21:54Perhaps some of you this week are just going to you know what
- 21:56I'm going to think about Psalm one, one and two for the whole
- 21:59week. Great, That's great meditation.
- 22:01Do that fill your mind daily. I was talking to somebody this
- 22:05week and we were, we were just chatting about our whole life
- 22:08and I was like, hey, live, live life one week at a time. 7 like
- 22:11A7 game series in sports. If you're winning four out of
- 22:15seven, you're in a good spot that like don't hold yourself to
- 22:20the perfection standard. Just grow.
- 22:22Take one step at a time, but strive for daily meditation in
- 22:27God's Word, but also weekly. Congratulations, you're doing
- 22:30that today. You're here at church.
- 22:31That's one of the reasons we need church.
- 22:33It's 'cause we need God's Word to be preached over us.
- 22:35We need God's Word to be remind us of the things in this life
- 22:38that matter most. That's why church exists on a
- 22:41weekly basis. It's because we believe that
- 22:43God's words are the most important words.
- 22:45So we come up underneath them and we say, God, speak to me
- 22:49again. Because this week I've wandered
- 22:50a bit. This week I've strayed a bit.
- 22:52This week I've been discouraged a bit or disappointed.
- 22:54I need to be reminded of who you are and what you've done.
- 22:59So not just daily and weekly, but also deeply, deeply meditate
- 23:04on God's words in, in an attention culture that we're in,
- 23:10I think we sometimes just skirt past the scriptures too fast.
- 23:16We just stay on the surface. Like we bring a rake to God's
- 23:19words and we're on the surface. We're we're actually being with
- 23:23God's word. We're actually meditating on
- 23:24them. But God, today he's handing you
- 23:26a shovel and he's saying, Hey, go deeper in my word.
- 23:30Come understand me more. Come discover the treasure
- 23:34that's lying underneath the surface.
- 23:37Go deep in meditation, which just means think about it
- 23:41longer. Don't just have a 5 or a 10
- 23:44minute time with God. Spend more time and just grow in
- 23:48that. Not perfectly, but increasingly.
- 23:52And guess what? The more you meditate on the
- 23:54Word, the more you fill your brain with God's thoughts, the
- 23:57happier you will be. God makes me happy through a
- 24:03righteous life. Third thing he does, He makes me
- 24:06happiest when I thrive inside of His placement.
- 24:08We're just marching through this Psalm verse by verse, and what
- 24:11does it say in verse three that we're going to thrive inside of
- 24:14God's placement? He's going to give a metaphor
- 24:16for us. The person who meditates on the
- 24:18law day and night, what are they like?
- 24:20He's going to use a simile. He is like a tree planted by
- 24:24streams of water that yields its fruit in its season and its leaf
- 24:27does not wither and all that he does, he prospers.
- 24:31God says the happy person is like a tree next to a stream of
- 24:38living water. Now this is your Bible
- 24:41hyperlinking not just to other parts of your Bible, but
- 24:44specifically the Garden of Eden. It's like the blue part on
- 24:48Wikipedia. It's saying, hey, go to this
- 24:49link, we're back to a Garden of Eden.
- 24:52You want to be planted by a stream of living water.
- 24:57And the person who's like a tree, I think it's intentional
- 25:00by God because he wants us to see four things that a tree is
- 25:03like, follow along like this, that he, we are like a tree in
- 25:05that God is telling us to be sturdy.
- 25:09Now, middle schoolers in the room, He's not telling you to
- 25:11get sturdy, He's telling you to be sturdy.
- 25:13OK, be sturdy. Trees don't move, they plant.
- 25:19It'd be a bad tree if it was moving all the time, unless it's
- 25:22from Lord of the Rings. OK, we need to stay still, be
- 25:27still, be sturdy, be strong with deep roots, be sturdy like a
- 25:32tree, but also be fruitful. You see that next verb?
- 25:35It's not just that we are planted, but it the tree yields
- 25:39its fruit in its season. Trees don't bear fruit from
- 25:41themselves, they bear fruit for others.
- 25:44That we're being fruitful. That part of the intention of
- 25:48God planting you beside Himself isn't just so that you would
- 25:52bear fruit for your joy, but for others.
- 25:54Joy that the happiest people in this world aren't about
- 25:59themselves, they are about others.
- 26:02We are like a tree, but we're also told like a tree, that
- 26:06we're to be dependent. Do you see that it says that
- 26:09it's planted, that it yields its fruit in its season, in its
- 26:15season is telling us that hey, trees bear fruit.
- 26:18When it's time to bear fruit, there's a time for that tree to
- 26:22bear fruit. The seed is planted.
- 26:24It grows in the way that the sun and the atmosphere work.
- 26:27Guess what? There's a time where it is
- 26:29harvested. So be dependent on the living
- 26:33water, be dependent on the atmosphere of being in God's
- 26:36Word. And guess what?
- 26:38You will see that as you abide in Jesus, you will bear fruit.
- 26:43You will change, you will grow, but you have to be dependent on
- 26:47God's process and the cycle of transformation.
- 26:52We're like a tree in that were sturdy, fruitful, dependent, but
- 26:55also we're like a tree in that were to be growing slowly,
- 26:59growing slowly. Do you see that in your text?
- 27:05In all that it's done? Its leaf does not wither in all
- 27:08that he does, He prospers. He prospers.
- 27:12Trees change not immediately, but incrementally.
- 27:20A tree doesn't grow overnight, it takes a lot of time.
- 27:27Some of you would just be encouraged to remember that that
- 27:30the slow motion miracle of sanctification will take time,
- 27:38but also your happiness. The thing God's calling you to.
- 27:43It might not be delivered to you with Amazon Prime level speed.
- 27:49It's going to be like a tree where it's going to come slow
- 27:53and maybe a bit boring, but it's going to grow strong.
- 28:00What I find fascinating is there's no such thing as a tree
- 28:03growing show. I mean by this, like, hey, if
- 28:06there's going to be a huge storm, guess what happens?
- 28:08Like especially in the Midwest, there's these huge storms.
- 28:10Or even here we get the big haboos and the lightning is
- 28:11going. People will go outside on their
- 28:13porch like, oh, let's go look at the lightning, right?
- 28:15It's flashy, it's powerful, it's loud, and it's instant.
- 28:22But nobody goes. Outside and goes hey, let me
- 28:24watch my tree grow for the afternoon.
- 28:35You are going to grow. But.
- 28:37It's going to be much. Slower than you think.
- 28:41So to be happy. In God's work in you, you have
- 28:44to have the right expectation of the speed with which He changes
- 28:47you. Otherwise.
- 28:50Guess what? We'll be disappointed.
- 28:53Like the wicked, the wicked are not so.
- 28:56They are not planted by streams of water.
- 28:58They don't yield fruit in its season, but rather they are like
- 29:00chaff. Chaff is like a corn husk.
- 29:03It's the part of the vegetation that just does not matter.
- 29:08RIP to all of us who live here. Corn is just not as good here as
- 29:10it is in the Midwest where I grew up.
- 29:12OK, on the 4th of July I will be eating corn, but it won't be the
- 29:17corn I want, so it'll just be corn.
- 29:18That is something else. The thing about chaff that you
- 29:20have to note that the the author's getting at is that
- 29:23chaff is rootless, useless, and weightless.
- 29:28The thing about chaff the. Corn husk, what is it?
- 29:30It is rootless. It is not attached to anything.
- 29:32You could just RIP it right off. It is useless.
- 29:34It does nothing after you have the fruit.
- 29:37But it also is weightless. It has no density.
- 29:41It has nothing to. It.
- 29:45It's not sturdy, not. Productive, not growing, not
- 29:47dependent. But sometimes we find ourselves
- 29:50here on Earth and we get like chaff envy.
- 29:52We look at the things happening us in the world and we look at
- 29:55the chaff and we're like, man, they just got it so much better
- 29:58than we do. We're like Dang it, why is it
- 30:05their life so much better than mine?
- 30:08Why can't I be like? Her Why can't I be like him?
- 30:11Why can't I look like him? Why can't I have their life?
- 30:16And we want the chaff. What if God was inviting?
- 30:22You to thrive not inside of somebody else's placement, but
- 30:25your very own. That where God has you.
- 30:29Exactly where He intends to use you.
- 30:31That the life that you have right now is the placement of
- 30:35God Himself. He's picked the.
- 30:39Place that you live, he's picked the job that you have, he's
- 30:43picked the relationships that you have.
- 30:44And he says, hey, thrive here, not there, wherever there is,
- 30:50but right here, right now with these kids, with this family on
- 30:55this street, in this apartment, thriving inside of God's
- 30:59placement. A friend of mine, his name is.
- 31:02Clem He was a legendary leader for me in student ministry back
- 31:06in Illinois. He was a student ministry
- 31:09leader, meaning 6th grade through 12th grade for 15 years.
- 31:16There's a crown awaiting. This man in heaven, I promise
- 31:18you, because if you've ever done middle school or high school
- 31:21ministry, you know that that is one of the most difficult jobs
- 31:24in the entire church. And he not did.
- 31:27He not only did seven years with one group, he did it again.
- 31:31And now he's starting over for 1/3 lap around the track.
- 31:34I mean, this guy is a student ministry legend.
- 31:37He's a volunteer. He wasn't the flashiest.
- 31:40He wasn't the loudest. But he was faithful and 15
- 31:47years. Into disciple making.
- 31:48I look back at those students who are in Klim's group and
- 31:50guess what? I find disciples.
- 31:53I find people with lives change because he was faithful.
- 31:56Just do the thing right in front of him again and again and again
- 32:00every Sunday night. Just showing up again and loving
- 32:02the students in front of him again.
- 32:05Loving his wife again. Loving his two kids again.
- 32:09He thrived inside of the. Placement of God John 1511 The
- 32:14reason God tells us to abide in him, to depend on him, like we
- 32:16just saying, is this, that your joy may be full.
- 32:21God wants you to experience full and lasting joy, but you won't
- 32:26have it if you're constantly looking at another person's
- 32:29life. You have to look at where God
- 32:32has placed you and cling to Him. And guess what?
- 32:37You will thrive inside of God's placement and ultimately have a
- 32:41happy life forth and finally we're.
- 32:45Trying to have a happy. Life through a righteous life,
- 32:48righteous in our expectations, righteous in our attitudes,
- 32:51righteous in what fills our mind.
- 32:53But also we need this. God makes me happiest when I
- 32:57forth hope for his better tomorrow, hope for his better
- 33:03tomorrow. See, if happiness is just here
- 33:05on earth, right here, right now, then we actually can't have it.
- 33:09Because what happens after we die?
- 33:10What happens with our grief? What happens with our
- 33:13disappointment? What happens in the ultimate
- 33:15sense? And I think that.
- 33:18Many of us as we're navigating life, examining others, we ask
- 33:22ourselves, why do they seem just as happy as I do, even though
- 33:26I'm living the way of the righteous and they're living the
- 33:28way of the wicked? Because look at what verse 5
- 33:30says. It says, therefore the wicked
- 33:32aren't going to stand in the judgement day, nor the sinners
- 33:35are going to be in the congregation of the righteous.
- 33:37For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of
- 33:40the wicked will perish, and. What God is telling.
- 33:44Us right there in verses 5 and 6 is something critical for us to
- 33:47having true ultimate happiness. He's saying that this.
- 33:53Life ain't it. The next life is really what
- 33:57matters most. That if you live for.
- 34:01Today and reject eternity. You will regret it forever.
- 34:06That if you live for. Happiness only in this life and
- 34:10not the joy of being in relationship with Jesus.
- 34:15You won't just regret that for 5 minutes, you will regret that
- 34:20forever. Because that's a.
- 34:24Place spent under his discipline and God's wrath perpetually.
- 34:31The way of the wicked. The Way of the Wicked.
- 34:36Results in eternity spent apart from God's grace that they.
- 34:41Are judged for. Their sin based off their
- 34:44righteousness, not Jesus. And you don't want to be judged
- 34:47off your righteousness, you want to be judged off His, because
- 34:50the standard for God. His entry ticket into.
- 34:54Heaven is perfection, perfect righteousness.
- 35:00And you don't have. That So what's your hope?
- 35:04Is it to just bring? Your life to God and say hey,
- 35:06let me in. Hey, I had a happy.
- 35:09Life. But I didn't care about you.
- 35:11I didn't care about your ways. I didn't live for you.
- 35:14I disobeyed you at every turn. I rebelled against you.
- 35:19So here's my. Somewhat righteous life you're.
- 35:25Going to be turned away because here's what the.
- 35:28Lord knows. Look, the Lord knows that Lord
- 35:31loves. The Lord welcomes into
- 35:33relationship with him the way of the righteous, but the way of
- 35:38the wicked will perish. The Lord knows the righteous.
- 35:43He knows you, He sees you, He cares about you.
- 35:48So believer who is here today and struggling like man, if I
- 35:51could just do my business like that guy runs his business,
- 35:54guess what? I'd be happy because I might
- 35:55have more money. I'd have the bigger boat.
- 35:58I'd have the bigger house. I'd have the better career, the
- 36:00better friend circle, the better looks, the vacations, the
- 36:03wardrobe, the influence. If you look at your life and
- 36:05you're comparing it to other people, guess what?
- 36:07Your joy will be stolen from you.
- 36:10But if? Rather you get.
- 36:11Vertical with and you go wait a second.
- 36:14I can be happiest. I can hope for better tomorrow
- 36:16because Jesus Christ knows me. He.
- 36:19Knows me. And he sees everything I'm going
- 36:23through. He sees the difficulty to make
- 36:26ends meet. He sees the difficulty of
- 36:27relationships you have. He sees it all.
- 36:30He's saying, guess what? If you would just endure.
- 36:33If you would just wait. And remain.
- 36:36In me and trust that I see you know you care about you.
- 36:42And hope for better tomorrow. That happiness is accessible.
- 36:49It's not just a concept. It's your reality.
- 36:53You get to live as. A person who experiences joy.
- 36:59Because you have the joy of knowing.
- 37:00Him and you can hope for better tomorrow and so.
- 37:05As we descend. As people, we're humble people
- 37:07who sink lower and lower on earth because we're emulating
- 37:10our Savior who came not to be a servant, not to serve, but to be
- 37:14a servant for everybody else. That we are consistently and
- 37:17continually putting others before ourselves, putting the
- 37:19Kingdom before ourselves. Guess what that is us saying
- 37:23with our lives, That we believe in the next life more than this
- 37:26one. That we put others more than
- 37:30ourselves. That we have what the Bible
- 37:31calls a blessed hope. I think it's.
- 37:35Interesting that that's the word.
- 37:36That the Bible uses because guess what, we have a blessed
- 37:39hope because Jesus Christ lived the perfect life.
- 37:41He died the death we should have died.
- 37:43He rose over death itself. Why?
- 37:44So that we could experience the joy of being in a relationship
- 37:48with God just as he always intended for us to have.
- 37:51That the happy life is through the righteous life we too can
- 37:55experience the. Flourishing of being in
- 37:59relationship. With God, that happy is the one
- 38:02who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor.
- 38:05Stands nor sits. But rather, their delight is in
- 38:08the law of the Lord, and because the Lord knows the way of the
- 38:12righteous. So let me close with this
- 38:14question for you. What?
- 38:16Could you do this summer? What choice would you make that
- 38:19would make your life 10 times more righteous and therefore
- 38:23therefore 10 times more happy? What choice could you make?
- 38:28This week and this summer, that with 10X your happiness because
- 38:33it's 10X more righteous. What choice could you make this?
- 38:38Summer, I'd venture to guess that you would fall on the lines
- 38:43of what Henry Nowen said. I'll close with this quote.
- 38:48Henry Nowen says this. That I saw more clearly than
- 38:51ever that the first great primary business to which I
- 38:56ought to attend to every day, was to have my soul happy in the
- 39:01Lord. Not how much.
- 39:05I might serve the Lord, but how I might get my soul into a happy
- 39:08state, How my inner man might be nourished.
- 39:12For I might seek to. Set the truth before the
- 39:15unconverted. I might seek to benefit
- 39:17believers. And yet, if I'm not happy in the
- 39:19Lord, not being nourished and strengthened in my inner self
- 39:22day by day, all this, all the good things God invites me to,
- 39:27might not be done in a right spirit.
- 39:34Now I saw. That the most important thing
- 39:35that I had to do was to give myself to the reading of the
- 39:39Word of God, and to meditation upon it.
- 39:42That thus my heart might be comforted, encouraged, warned,
- 39:46reproved, instructed, and that thus, by means of the Word of
- 39:51God, while meditating on it, my heart might be brought into
- 39:56experimental communion with the Lord.
- 40:00What's he saying? That being with God is supposed
- 40:03to be the happiest place you are.
- 40:16Is everywhere. The difference isn't not whether
- 40:19he is drawing near to you, it's whether or not you're drawing
- 40:21near to him. So I'll invite you to just take
- 40:24a moment to sing, to draw near to God.
- 40:30To worship him. That.
- 40:33As we March this summer. Toward a righteous life that St.
- 40:37City will be marked by some of the happiest people in these
- 40:39valley because we live a righteous life.
