Transcript
- 0:00What's up y'all? You're listening to the Extra
- 0:02Point college football podcast. I'm your host Jacob Carnage,
- 0:05joined as always by my Co host Daniel Hammock.
- 0:08Daniel, in today's episode we are going to put a bow on this
- 0:12season. We have crowned our national
- 0:14champion. Big Congrats to the Indiana
- 0:16Hoosiers. We're going to recap that game
- 0:18talked about how they won their first ever national
- 0:22championship. We're going to save some of the
- 0:25what does this mean for the sport for a future episode.
- 0:28Long offseason, unfortunately, but plenty of time to talk about
- 0:32the sport as a whole. We've got that coming for you,
- 0:35but we're going to recap the national championship on today's
- 0:37episode. Then we're going to put a bow on
- 0:39the 2025 season, Daniel. We're going to hand out some
- 0:42superlatives such as our team of the year, disappointing team of
- 0:46the year off into the defensive special teams, players of the
- 0:49year, some of our favorite uniforms, some of our favorite
- 0:52games. I will just kind of just talk
- 0:54about the 2025 season, what we loved about it hand out our
- 0:57superlatives. But Daniel first we we did crown
- 1:00a national champion on Monday night.
- 1:04Deanna we we both picking the cover.
- 1:07They just missed there on the cover post game win expectancy
- 1:11was about 80% to Miami's to Miami close championship game,
- 1:19closest championship game we've had since what the 2017 Alabama
- 1:24Georgia game that what's overtime.
- 1:25So you know, there, there was 3 championships in a row that were
- 1:29like 1 score games and those are the only ones in the playoff era
- 1:33that have been one score games. We got one of these in this
- 1:36game. Excellent championship game.
- 1:38I mean, let's talk about wonders first.
- 1:40Daniel. Indiana did it.
- 1:41I mean, we, we watched every second of this game.
- 1:45It, it felt like watching Indiana football the rest of the
- 1:49season. They didn't make mistakes.
- 1:52Yeah, and they capitalize on your mistakes.
- 1:54They I think that you said it perfectly multiple times this
- 1:57year about how at least through these playoffs, you've said
- 2:00Indiana's the best team. One of the greatest attributes
- 2:03of college football is that most of the time the best team wins
- 2:06the national championship. We did not think that that was
- 2:09necessarily true last year with Ohio State.
- 2:11Not that they're not a great team, but it's about balancing
- 2:15the regular season with everything.
- 2:17It's it's an overall encompassing and so Indiana
- 2:21finishing this off was truly a special moment.
- 2:25First national championship in in program history.
- 2:28I mean, anytime that you can say something like that, it's
- 2:31special. Obviously you start to be able.
- 2:34I think you have to wait until there's a finality to it before
- 2:38you can start being like, wow, this, you know, and you know,
- 2:41this was special. This was special.
- 2:43But you know, you really look at the whole season.
- 2:45I mean, Kurt Zignetti, what he's done in these two years,
- 2:48Fernando Mendoza, his remarkable, you know, Heisman,
- 2:52Heisman run, all the special things with Mendoza's parents.
- 2:57But do you know this team just being a bunch of veteran guys
- 3:00that transfer it over from from JMU And then also just some
- 3:04other super seniors that kind of stuck around.
- 3:06And, you know, they they really put their blood, sweat and tears
- 3:08into this sport, not leaving for other things and showed that,
- 3:13you know, what they could do together with special at this
- 3:15game in particular, though. I mean, it was something to
- 3:18behold. The blocked punt for a touchdown
- 3:21was very Indiana. It was something that they have,
- 3:25you know, special teams been a big part of this for them.
- 3:28Field position has been big. You know, watching this
- 3:30ultimately come down to, you know, Carson Beck with the ball
- 3:34in his hands going down the field, chance to score and win
- 3:38and Indiana's defense coming up with a big, you know,
- 3:41interception. As I was watching specifically
- 3:43that final drive, I just remember thinking, well, you
- 3:46know, all of this game has come down to and now, you know, it's
- 3:50in Miami's hands. They could do this.
- 3:51I believe Indiana was about to get off the field or not get off
- 3:54the field, but it was third and 15 when they had the roughing
- 3:58the passer penalty. And so, of course, gave Miami a
- 4:02first down. But that play I think impacted
- 4:07Carson Beck. Not that he hasn't thrown
- 4:09interceptions before, but I think that he when he got hit,
- 4:13you could kind of tell there was a difference in him.
- 4:16It was very much a he got rocked and it's just a tough hit.
- 4:20It was a hard hit. It wasn't necessarily dirty.
- 4:22It was late, but it wasn't necessarily dirty.
- 4:24It was just a good hit you put on a quarterback.
- 4:27But I mentioned in our group chat, Jacob, it may be one of
- 4:31the most underrated timeouts of the year.
- 4:33Kurt Signeti calling time out because after that play, Miami
- 4:37gets a little hot and they're just, you know, it's all muscle
- 4:40memory for Carson Beck at that point.
- 4:42And he's doing his two-minute drill going down the field and
- 4:45then, you know, kind of gets the first down, gets the first down,
- 4:47gets the first down. They're running hurry up.
- 4:49So of course, Indiana can't substitute.
- 4:52And again, he's not having to really process, which I think
- 4:56is, you know, he's hit pretty hard.
- 4:58I think he may have been a little, you know, concussed a
- 5:01little bit potentially. And so he, the way he was going
- 5:04about things I think was exactly what would have won in the game.
- 5:08But they called time out, slow things down.
- 5:10I compare it to like when you're running in basketball and you've
- 5:14got a good team that's good in transition versus making them
- 5:18pound the rock at half court and play half court ball.
- 5:22That's what they essentially did to Carson and made him read a
- 5:25defense and do some stuff. You know, if you're not 100% at
- 5:29that point or you're kind of, you know, zonked out of it and
- 5:32you're not hot anymore, he comes out and he throws a pick into
- 5:35double coverage. I mean, that was elite time out
- 5:38by Kurt Zignetti. Just another notch in his belt.
- 5:41But what a great championship game.
- 5:43I appreciate that. We had a good game.
- 5:45Like you said, best game we've had in a while.
- 5:47One score game down to the last possession.
- 5:49So very entertaining. I had fun.
- 5:52Grateful for the greatest sport known to man, college football.
- 5:57Yeah, I I want to stay on the that last drive there for a
- 6:00second before I talk more about Indiana.
- 6:01Just just for one of the topic of it.
- 6:03I saw someone say this and I thought was really good that
- 6:05that play required an NFL throw from Carson Beck and you didn't
- 6:12get wasn't the worst play, but from the opposite hash deep all
- 6:15across the field where you've got to get it over the corner.
- 6:18He had a step and then right before the safety gets there
- 6:21that that that is a Sunday throw that was required in that
- 6:24situation. And why are you calling it then
- 6:27when you have more time and was interesting.
- 6:29So, yeah, great time out because everywhere else was covered.
- 6:31It's like the Indiana, you know, you're always picking and
- 6:33choosing where you want to be strong, where you want it, where
- 6:36you're OK giving something up. And that seemed like a defensive
- 6:39call that was like, OK, we're going to lock down everything on
- 6:42the side of the field. And if he's going to be this,
- 6:43it's going to have to be to this receiver and I don't think he
- 6:47can do it. That was the defensive call.
- 6:49And at the end of the day, Carson Beck didn't do it.
- 6:51And that decides the championship, which again, I
- 6:54I'll I'll come back to why why I'm grateful than Indiana.
- 6:56One I talked about in the last episode.
- 6:58But another interesting stat. Unfortunately for Carson Beck,
- 7:02David Hale put this out that Carson Beck has had the ball
- 7:06with a chance to win or tie and excuse me, let me get back up.
- 7:11Carson Beck has 6 losses as a starter, right?
- 7:13In four of those games he had the ball with a chance to win or
- 7:17tie on the final drive and threw 4 game sealing interceptions.
- 7:23That's I mean tail was all the time at this point that was in
- 7:27our group shadow. This game only ends one way.
- 7:29It's what the Carson Beck game sealing interception and that's,
- 7:33that's, that's exactly what happened.
- 7:35Brother. Indiana, why?
- 7:37I'm really glad this happened. You mentioned it, Daniel.
- 7:40Indiana was the best team in college football this year and
- 7:43now they get to get they get crowned the national champion.
- 7:45So for the sport, I'm very, very grateful that Indiana won
- 7:49because they are a deserving 16 and O best team all year.
- 7:53And if you simply just go, you know, if you're someone who just
- 7:55ranks teams by the win loss column, like, I don't know, like
- 7:58the College Football Playoff committee, look, one team had 0
- 8:01losses and no one else had less than two.
- 8:05And it was two or more for everybody else in college
- 8:07football this year. So, yeah, this was a really
- 8:11special season for Indiana. Mendoza does what he did all
- 8:14year in this game. And that was like, Fernanda
- 8:18Mendoza did not have to do too much in this game, nor did he
- 8:20have to do too much all season. I think he had, I think he had
- 8:26one 300 yard game. Maybe he had no 300 yard games
- 8:29this year because I mean, I have seen very few teams, Daniel,
- 8:34that play with the precision that Indiana played with this
- 8:38year. And you saw it in this game and
- 8:40in a game that was decided on a blocked punt, like an
- 8:44interception, A fumble, a couple of coaching calls here and
- 8:48there. We got out coached national
- 8:51championship game Mario Cristobal opting to kick a 50
- 8:54yard field goal when he's down 10 instead of trying to get put
- 8:59your offense out there and say go get 2 yards.
- 9:02That's when you say we're bigger than you go get 2 yards.
- 9:06I I, it's just I again, Cristobal again and a game of
- 9:10margin where you had a chance to go win the game that you know,
- 9:13with the ball, the chance to go in the game.
- 9:16Decisions like that matter and a game like this where you can
- 9:19have it's the difference in having a championship and
- 9:22shutting up all the haters and not are calls like that.
- 9:25So to me, it was an encapsulation of both teams.
- 9:28Indiana play with precision. They had turnovers.
- 9:31They beat you in all three phases of the game.
- 9:33And if you want to say coaching all four phases of the game.
- 9:37And right, Miami showed their ceiling, which was Miami is
- 9:41capable of winning a national championship and they still have
- 9:44some ways to go. And I think that was Miami this
- 9:47year. Miami always had a championship
- 9:48ceiling and they came up short in three games.
- 9:53Congrats to Indiana. Now the question that we will
- 9:56talk about it more, but a question to be asked about who's
- 9:58the next Indiana. I don't know if there's a next
- 10:00Indiana. Let's let's appreciate what we
- 10:02just watched. I do think this is good for the
- 10:04sport. I think it gets plenty of fan
- 10:06bases. Hope that we can be the next
- 10:09Indiana. It is possible because if
- 10:11Indiana can do it, Daniel who can't do it honestly, I mean
- 10:15like what what what team I'll say outside.
- 10:18I mean, I know that part of this, I mean, Indiana is not out
- 10:21paying everybody, but they are a Big 10 school.
- 10:23So I'll say like. They at least stop resources as
- 10:26a baseline, but they're not. It's like they're not paying
- 10:29people like anything crazy. But what's stopping Purdue,
- 10:33Arkansas. I know Vanderbilt was good this
- 10:35year, but Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Northwestern,
- 10:39Rutgers, like what? What can the school say the
- 10:43Indiana has that they don't? It's nothing.
- 10:45So I think that's good for the sport.
- 10:48At the same time, I don't know if it's replicable.
- 10:49And I just want to appreciate what Kurtzing that he's done in
- 10:52these two years to bring in the end of their first national
- 10:55championship. It's unbelievable.
- 10:57And I said it a few weeks ago during the playoff, Chris Falika
- 11:00said this. I'll give him credit, but
- 11:01playing bad loses you more games than playing good wins them.
- 11:05And Indiana did not play bad this year.
- 11:08They were not. They were not going to beat
- 11:09themselves. They weren't going to make
- 11:11mistakes. They weren't going to miss
- 11:12blocks, they weren't going to drop punts like punts get
- 11:15blocked. They just.
- 11:16The level of precision was unbelievable this year.
- 11:20Shout out to the Hoosiers man Congrats.
- 11:22Largest living alumni base. Go enjoy it.
- 11:24You guys are the kings of college football.
- 11:27Again, regardless of what happens to in the Indiana after
- 11:30this. Greatest turn around coaching.
- 11:33Greatest coaching job I think I've ever seen in the sport
- 11:35since I've been watching it closely.
- 11:39Coolest story I think I've seen in the sport since I've been
- 11:41watching it closely. So Congrats to Indiana, your
- 11:46national champion, Daniel. Let's let's go to our 2025
- 11:50superlatives. We, you know, we're texting back
- 11:52and forth about these team of the year as it will start with
- 11:55and our 2025 extra Point team of the year is Indiana.
- 12:00And I told you, I said it will be Indiana regardless of the
- 12:03result because yeah, I'm like, I don't care if they win or lose.
- 12:07I'm like they've earned to me prior to the national
- 12:10championship game, best team in college football.
- 12:13Like in so Indiana team of the year, we just talked about them,
- 12:17but what a special season they were.
- 12:20The story of college football this year.
- 12:22And I mean, what's crazy Daniel is maybe I'm wrong.
- 12:25I haven't looked a lot of the draft stuff yet.
- 12:27But I don't think this is a team that's going to go have 13 draft
- 12:32picks this year as far as I know.
- 12:34I think there's definitely NFL talent, but special team.
- 12:37They they absolutely deserve team of the Year, obviously, but
- 12:41we'll give it out anyway. Yeah, I mean, Signetti even said
- 12:44on on the podium, I believe that, you know, the the whole
- 12:48was greater than some of its parts.
- 12:50And he even said there's not going to be these draft picks
- 12:53and stuff. Now, Mendoza, of course,
- 12:55quarterback is most important position and I think that that
- 12:59you know, and it not supersedes everything that they had going
- 13:03for it, but basically supercharged that, I'll say.
- 13:06And he's going to probably be the number one overall pick.
- 13:08I think that just the way things have gone, especially with Dante
- 13:12Moore returning to school. So yeah, I think that that's
- 13:15kind of in the back. But yeah, Indiana, I mean, wow,
- 13:18I think that there's going to be some people who watered down
- 13:23what exactly just happened because they've seen Indiana now
- 13:28in first place for three months because the last month of the
- 13:31season dragged on like crazy. But I think it would like
- 13:34exactly what you said, Like we really need to put this in
- 13:37perspective of like what has happened over the course of
- 13:42Indiana's like, lifetime. And then now over the course of,
- 13:46you know, these past two years with, you know, last year it was
- 13:50almost like, OK, will it, You know, we will accept the fact
- 13:54that Indiana won these games, play their easy schedule, lost
- 13:58by a million to Ohio State and then lost their playoff game to
- 14:02Notre Dame, will accept it. You know, that's that's
- 14:05acceptable. That's palatable.
- 14:07You know, Signet is a good coach, but he can't really do it
- 14:10at Indiana. And then they really did it
- 14:12Indiana this year. So I just, yeah, like you said,
- 14:15as far as turnarounds go, I mean, you can only think of like
- 14:19Sabin level of turn around and it was like obviously he's the
- 14:23greatest coach of all time and. It was still Alabama.
- 14:27And it was still Alabama, so it was going to a place that had
- 14:31resources and history. And he still in his first year
- 14:34lost to Alicia and Monroe, lost six games or seven games,
- 14:37whatever it was. So you know that the turn around
- 14:41was much quicker and you know, the championship was came much
- 14:47faster. So we will see what it it means
- 14:50for the sport going forward. But very happy as a college
- 14:53football fan, like you said, just for Indiana, for those
- 14:56fans, seems like they're a good fan base.
- 14:58So happy for them. I know that they've really
- 15:00enjoyed this year. The picture that's been going
- 15:04around, Jacob of Cignetti's first game last year opening,
- 15:09that was really fun to watch. And it's not an indictment on
- 15:13the fan base, by the way, for anyone who thinks it's an
- 15:15indictment on the fan base, you try being the most losingest,
- 15:19you know, team in in FBS history as far as, yeah, Power 5 is
- 15:24concerned. So that was, yeah.
- 15:26They had nothing to cheer about yet.
- 15:28Now they do. This fan base has opened UPS.
- 15:30Excited to see what this unlocks in the future for college
- 15:33football. Yeah, I think Signetti's also
- 15:35ruined how many fan bases are going to say, dude, Signetti did
- 15:39it in Indiana, so why is it our coach in Year 1 going 11:00 and
- 15:431:00? Yeah, he freezes there.
- 15:46At this point, he's done with man.
- 15:49They are they are so many like Indiana is the answer to so many
- 15:53anomalies and you can't use logic.
- 15:55I still can't believe that we're I mean, we're two days in the
- 15:58Nati. I watched it happen.
- 15:59They're 16 or no, they're the Champs.
- 16:00And I'm like, how in the world did Indiana win the national
- 16:04championship? The Cignetti.
- 16:05It's crazy holding a PlayStation controller.
- 16:07What happened here, you know? Right.
- 16:10He's been on an easy mode. It's like those things you see
- 16:11where people are like angry after a loss and they had to
- 16:14take some frustration out. Kurt Cignetti was doing that in
- 16:17real football. But to like Oregon in the semi
- 16:21final. So goodness, Gracie.
- 16:23Yeah. Congrats to Indiana, our team of
- 16:25the year. Dingo.
- 16:26How about our surprise team of the year?
- 16:29So what's a team that maybe had mediocre low expectations that
- 16:33blew us away for a surprise year?
- 16:35You're holding up an hour being a hootie.
- 16:37Who? The Kennesaw State Owls, the
- 16:40Conference USA champs? Did they get snubbed from the
- 16:43playoff? Some are saying, some are saying
- 16:46biggest playoffs. So yeah, Kennesaw State.
- 16:49How? How about them Owls, Daniel?
- 16:51Yeah, man, they lost to Michigan in the bowl game.
- 16:54I mean, it was Western Michigan, but still.
- 16:58They played like Michigan. Yeah, that was that was a tough
- 17:02game. But no Kennesaw State.
- 17:03Look, for all that we said about Indiana on the small scale, you
- 17:08think about Kennesaw State coming from what they've come
- 17:11from, not, you know, just joining the FBS couple years
- 17:14ago. Obviously we're at Kennesaw
- 17:15State pod because you know, we're located in Kennesaw.
- 17:19I went to Kennesaw, we went to Kennesaw State.
- 17:21But that being said, I think Kennesaw State that kind of turn
- 17:25around that Jerry Mack did that quickly a winning 10 games and
- 17:29being a fun story, winning conference Conference USA just
- 17:33definitely a fun story. So they did, you know, give
- 17:36Indiana a game for like a driver to in in September.
- 17:39So never forget, you know? Daniel, they were a couple plays
- 17:44away from being tenant to me. You could argue refs stole the
- 17:48Wake Forest game from him. Almost went on the road and beat
- 17:51Wake Forest in week 1. Lost 9 to 10 in that one and
- 17:54their quarterback was. Over that game.
- 17:56Yeah. You know.
- 17:58And then, you know, won the rematch at Jacksonville State.
- 18:01So yeah, Congrats to Jerry Mack in the Owls, our 2025 surprise
- 18:06team of the year. Let's go to the other side.
- 18:08Look, we try to be positive. We start with the good.
- 18:11Let's go to the to the disappointing.
- 18:13How about the most disappointing team of 2025 and big old sorry
- 18:18to graphics guy Ben, the Clemson Tigers are our 2025 most
- 18:23disappointing team of the year, Daniel.
- 18:24I picked them to not only win the ACCI picked them to go to
- 18:28the playoff. I also picked him to win a
- 18:31playoff game I believe against my better judgement.
- 18:35So is this? Is this me being bitter and
- 18:38angry? I mean, a little bit, if I'm
- 18:41being honest, but I cuz I, I think I'm bitter because I was
- 18:44right on Clemson and then I tried, I listened to everybody
- 18:47else tell me no, no, no, this is the year.
- 18:49And I was like, you know what? Yeah, you know what?
- 18:51Yeah, I'm, I'm talking myself back into it right now on the
- 18:54podcast. They had the Indiana formula,
- 18:57Daniel, that their average age at Clemson was probably 22.
- 19:01I mean, this was like the veteran roster returning
- 19:04production. So I'm like, I, I was like, OK,
- 19:07I get why people are saying Clemson's been disappointing,
- 19:09but this is the dab away. Like this is what he's been
- 19:12trying to say is, look, I'm not going to win it every year
- 19:15anymore. Every 3 or 4.
- 19:17I'm going to recruit good talent, our OK GS, our kind of
- 19:20guys. They're going to stay here and
- 19:23develop. We've got a five star
- 19:26quarterback who's been with our OC for three years.
- 19:29Like we've got a veteran defense that's full of four and five
- 19:33stars that are OK GS. I was like, OK, I I see it, I
- 19:37get it. I'll go against a better
- 19:39judgement. So yeah, for me and for you, I
- 19:41mean that this is our most disappointing team of the year.
- 19:43Like it was between Denver, Penn State and we we respected the
- 19:47results of the, you know, the the vaunted bad boy, bad boy
- 19:52mowers been straight. So yeah, I mean that comes in
- 19:55most. Disappointing, by the way,
- 19:56that's that's I was I was like, if he doesn't mention this, I'm
- 20:01bringing it up. And I love that when we were
- 20:04texting Ben to say, Hey, this is not a personal.
- 20:09But we did respect the results of the bad boy mowers pinstripe
- 20:13bowl. Look, Penn State, they got next.
- 20:18They were so close to being the most disappointing team that
- 20:21they just finished finished that game.
- 20:23You know they that's. Right.
- 20:25That was that was good. But yeah, I know.
- 20:26I I agree in the Clemson, like you said, they had the Indiana
- 20:31formula, but they had actual, you know, blue chip guys baked
- 20:35in. We didn't mention this with
- 20:37Indiana. I'll say it really quick
- 20:39actually. I'll just save it for our next
- 20:40one. How about that?
- 20:41I'll save it for our next. Yes, save it.
- 20:43I know you're going to save it. Yeah, OK, Clemson, most
- 20:48disappointing team of the year. There's always next year.
- 20:50They're right. They right now have a top.
- 20:52What is it their 16th right now in the transfer portal rankings?
- 20:55So they're changing stuff like Clemson.
- 20:58As the top 20 class in the transfer portal.
- 21:01So how about that? Which is crazy for Clemson.
- 21:03So here's to Clemson not being the most disappointing team for
- 21:062026. You know, we're going to be
- 21:07hopeful in that well. You can't be disappointing if
- 21:10your expectations have been lowered.
- 21:12That's right, expect low and let them blow you away.
- 21:16I mean that in a kind way. Yeah, OK.
- 21:20Coach of the year, Daniel. No, no surprises here.
- 21:23Kurt Cignetti ones coach of the year.
- 21:25I feel like sometimes this award, they try to out think the
- 21:27room like 2022 for example. It's like, well, I mean, coach
- 21:31of the year is Kirby Smart, but it almost becomes like what?
- 21:34It almost becomes like most surprising coach.
- 21:36Yeah. Of.
- 21:37Yeah, which coach were we not expecting a lot out of?
- 21:41And TCU made the natty so like it's going to go to Sonny Dykes
- 21:45and and or you know, insert there's countless examples of
- 21:49this of like they went nine and three on when I expected them to
- 21:52go 3:00 and 9:00. And that becomes your coach of
- 21:54the year. It's like a LeBron award as far
- 21:56as MVP goes. Like, he should have won if
- 22:00you're truly going back. He was the most valuable.
- 22:02He should, like, should have won seven or eight of them, but he
- 22:04only has four. And it's like, well, they were
- 22:07given to this guy 'cause this guy had a good year on a bad
- 22:10team that, Yep, barely made the playoffs since.
- 22:13Like, OK, all right. Don't I think the room cursing
- 22:16daddy was coach of the year this year Let's let's just yeah 16
- 22:19and O in Indiana. I mean unbelievable coaching job
- 22:22Daniel Indiana broke. I mean, again, we keep telling
- 22:25them the anomaly. We haven't talked about the big
- 22:28trend they broke. Daniel, what was?
- 22:29It Yeah, it I thought you were about to say it.
- 22:34I was about to say it. We've all got dude.
- 22:36He blow, he broke the blue chip ratio.
- 22:38It's officially done. It's over with.
- 22:40And this was the right team to do it.
- 22:42Desmond may not be toast been a true anomaly, but Kurt Zignetti
- 22:48a good reason to mention blue chip ratio right here is that it
- 22:52broke and you need a herculean effort from a coach like this
- 22:56who early indicators are he's that dude.
- 23:00So great job by him. His confidence and it's not
- 23:03arrogance. I've I've, I've really
- 23:06appreciated how confident he is without being disrespectful or
- 23:11anything like that. And he just seems like he loves
- 23:14ball. He coaches ball.
- 23:15He's not trying to do the saving shtick.
- 23:17He's not trying to be anybody else but himself.
- 23:20And I have nothing but respect for someone who does that.
- 23:22So great on him. He's got a fun name to say.
- 23:27You know, he's he's got a lot going for him.
- 23:28This, this was obvious this year.
- 23:30But yeah, breaking the blue chip ratio.
- 23:33I mean, the Clemson could have been Indiana, like we said, they
- 23:38actually have the blue chips, but Indiana only having 44 star
- 23:43or excuse me, 7 four-star players on this roster, truly
- 23:47remarkable. No five stars.
- 23:49So, you know, they just did it with a bunch of guys who been in
- 23:52the program and, you know, they had some transfers that have
- 23:55played elsewhere and really bet on themselves.
- 23:57So great job, Kurt Signetti. I'm, I'm looking here at the
- 24:00blue chip ratio stuff. I don't even see what Indiana's
- 24:04number was. Somebody will have to tell me,
- 24:05'cause I was looking at one minute.
- 24:08It's that's what. I'm saying out of 85 S.
- 24:11When he doesn't include transfers.
- 24:13So this is like what historically it's been you have
- 24:16to recruit more four and five star.
- 24:19I mean, I think the transfer talent was four and five star
- 24:21either, to be completely honest. But yeah, it's more four and
- 24:24five stars out of high school than two and three stars.
- 24:26And I mean, he says in the article before the season this
- 24:29year, it's the question, will someone eventually bust the
- 24:31model? And he said at some point
- 24:33probably question mark a team with a high 40s blue chip ratio,
- 24:38a transcendent quarterback and a lot of health like will probably
- 24:41win it all. And his example was Oregon with
- 24:44Marcus Mariota in 2014. But that was a high 40s team in
- 24:47the blue chip ratio, Heisman winning quarterback.
- 24:50They went and beat for the state, lost to Ohio State in the
- 24:52title game. And he was like who might be the
- 24:55season like teams that fit that category would have been Ole
- 24:58Miss, South Carolina, Louisville, Utah.
- 25:01And so any and it doesn't touch the blue chip ratio.
- 25:04I mean, a true anomaly. They did get the transcendent
- 25:07quarterback play. They did get a lot of health
- 25:10luck this year. A true anomaly.
- 25:14Kurt Zignetti, coach of the year.
- 25:17How about offensive player of the year, Daniel, where again
- 25:20going to not I'll think the room here.
- 25:23It's Fernando Mendoza. He had probably his biggest
- 25:26Heisman moment after he won the Heisman in the national
- 25:30championship game. Apparently it was not a called
- 25:33quarterback draw. Well, it was it was a read.
- 25:35It's like if if they he said if they run man, I'm supposed to
- 25:38throw it. If they run zone, I'm supposed
- 25:41to run it. And he said in pre snap he
- 25:43identified that they were playing half the field in man
- 25:45and half the field in zone. And he just said, I'm going to
- 25:48bet on myself and run the ball. And I thought I was like, oh, he
- 25:51got the first down, but he's going to be short of the goal.
- 25:54And then he just like extends, takes a shot to the I mean dude,
- 25:57he took so many shots in this game and he's still talking
- 26:001,000,000 miles a minute. He is post game just smiling.
- 26:04He's fun. He is so fun.
- 26:07He's pure too. It's like a tree.
- 26:08Easy to root for. It's really, And so it was so
- 26:11funny listening to him with Scott Van Pelt after the game.
- 26:14Jacob, he was talking. Gavin Pelt was teeing up a
- 26:17question about how Tim Tebow has been a mentor for him.
- 26:20And Mr. Tebow kept calling him Mr. Tebow.
- 26:23He says Mr. Tebow, Mr. you know, Mr. Tebow told me this and he
- 26:26has this great. And he's like, you could call
- 26:28him Tim. He's like, oh, yeah, OK, Tim and
- 26:30Tim so funny. And then seeing that's so funny.
- 26:34I almost said Mr. Tebow just then seeing Tim Tebow respond on
- 26:38Twitter and say, come on, man, Mr. Tebow's my dad and I just
- 26:41think that everybody's having fun.
- 26:43You know, Fernando Mendoza does kind of give that same Tebow
- 26:47feel good story that most people had.
- 26:49We didn't because we were Georgia fans.
- 26:51But he, you know, he kind of had that that kind of rally, yeah
- 26:55sport behind him where they all felt like, hey, this is a good
- 26:58guy. We can all.
- 26:59Cheer for him. And it was just a very much a
- 27:02fun story. Also Fernando Mendoza's parents,
- 27:04what a sweet story with them. Very sweet.
- 27:08You know, all everything that went into it, dude, let's just
- 27:11pick the guy who had, you know, the Heisman Trophy and had the
- 27:15moments and LED this team to a victory.
- 27:18Like you said, we're not going to out think the room that that
- 27:20play was insane. Up until that play, we were
- 27:23like, Oh yeah, his Heisman moment was maybe against Penn
- 27:26State or whatever. This one, I mean, is that one on
- 27:29steroids, man, for everything, you know, put them in position
- 27:33to win this game and take that lead, man, that was awesome.
- 27:37So cool for your best players to be making the best plays at the
- 27:41end of the game. Yeah, I think the room for Dana
- 27:44Mendoza high as a winner off it's a player of the year.
- 27:47How about D for the player of the year?
- 27:48And I promise we did not just go who played in the natty, but
- 27:52Daniel, the most impressive defensive player that I watched
- 27:55this year's Ruben Bayne and watching him play that, you
- 27:59know, work. We're calling it edge now, this
- 28:00modern defensive position because he does both sides so
- 28:04well. I think we've had some really
- 28:06elite like run edge talent, almost like the more defensive
- 28:11end style from back in the day. And we've seen great pass
- 28:14rushing talent, more like the traditional outside linebacker
- 28:17pass rusher. I think we've seen both a second
- 28:21of my buddy Sam about this, like, I don't know, the last one
- 28:24I saw he said, when was the last time we watched like the the
- 28:28like the most elite edge player in the country play for a
- 28:32national championship? And I was and I was like, I
- 28:36mean, Trayvon Walker, but I mean, even even Georgia fans
- 28:38would have been like, Oh, he's like the 5th or 6th player on
- 28:40defense that we'd mentioned in number one overall draft pick
- 28:45because I'm like, I was like, I don't know, Nolan Smith.
- 28:48I went all the way back to because you know what Smith, I'd
- 28:51say is more of that traditional D end, great run edge.
- 28:55Right. But Caleb von Chaison was the
- 28:58first edge taken out of that from that 2019 LSU.
- 29:02Team. But I don't think that he was
- 29:05like that year, you know, like all year we're like, Oh my gosh,
- 29:10this. Edge.
- 29:10Yeah, there. Wasn't, I mean, I, I said Will
- 29:13Anderson. I mean, and Will Anderson, he
- 29:15that wasn't even the best year when he played in the natty
- 29:18anyways. It's been a while since we've
- 29:19had like this, no doubt unbelievable edge talent make it
- 29:23to this final game and get to play on the biggest stage.
- 29:25And he was special in this national championship man.
- 29:28I mean, if Miami would have won that game, we'd be talking about
- 29:31the performance that Ruben Bain had.
- 29:32He had an unbelievable year this year.
- 29:34His side speed bend, the way he sheds blockers, the way he can
- 29:40like rush the passer and also stay like edge disciplined
- 29:44against the rates. He is special.
- 29:47I cannot wait to see what NFL team gets him.
- 29:49I wished it. I wish the Falcons would draft
- 29:50him as these. We will be long gone for the
- 29:53team without a draft pick or without a draft pick in the
- 29:55first round. Yeah, Reuben Bayne man is is our
- 29:58defensive player of the year. Just a special special season
- 30:01for a special special player. Yeah, it's one of these where he
- 30:05almost is the flagship for the entire Miami defensive line.
- 30:11Like they were all great. Reuben Bayne was obviously the
- 30:14guy that was the main. You know, I think honestly, it
- 30:19may be since as far as just kind of a consensus as far as across
- 30:23college football, saying if you asked everybody who's the best
- 30:27defensive end or who's the best pass rusher, it may have been as
- 30:30far as, you know, just notoriety like Jadeveon Clowney.
- 30:34That's how long it's been. I feel like since there's been
- 30:36like a consensus where everybody's like, oh, that's the
- 30:39guy. And you know, 9 1/2 sacks this
- 30:42year, some people look at that and say, oh, it's kind of
- 30:44pedestrian. Shouldn't he have like double
- 30:45digits? I say pedestrian kind of tongue
- 30:48in cheek there, of course. But I think, you know, he's he
- 30:52affected so many games and Miami's best unit all year was
- 30:56their defensive line. So it's like led by him and it's
- 31:00just a fierce unit all together. So, you know, good on him for
- 31:04how well he's played all year, interception, of course, fumble
- 31:08recovery, all that stuff. He's going to make a lot of
- 31:10money in the NFL. But just like you said, as far
- 31:12as that being the guy that's a bull rusher and a speed rusher,
- 31:16like I I wouldn't even put, you know, Will Anderson in that
- 31:18category. I know you were talking
- 31:20specifically about being in national championship, but
- 31:23thinking about those guys, it is like Jadeveon Clowney esque
- 31:26where it's like a guy that's just a freak that's big.
- 31:30That's like his presence is known when you're on the field.
- 31:34And I think that that's that's exactly who he is.
- 31:36So fun, fun year for him. Kind of everybody got to
- 31:39discover him early in the year as far as nationally and then
- 31:43just kind of rode the wave with him the whole way.
- 31:46I'll add one more as far as a little more recent than Clowny
- 31:49Miles Garrett, yeah, fair. I mean, he was, I mean first
- 31:51overall pick obviously was very good.
- 31:55But. It's funny because.
- 31:56He's been even better in the NFL.
- 31:58Where? Then he wasn't.
- 32:00One of those guys like Jadevion Clowney, you could argue was
- 32:03better in college than the NFL. So hopefully for his sake he's
- 32:06he's like Miles Garrett because then he'll be better at the next
- 32:09level. So.
- 32:10Daniel We are a true college football podcast, which means we
- 32:14we love and understand the game. So we don't stop at offense and
- 32:18defense. Daniel There there are three
- 32:19phases of the game. Special teams is a part of
- 32:22football. So we're going to award our
- 32:24special teams player of the year.
- 32:25And Daniel, it would be way too easy to just name a returner,
- 32:29but honestly, I think probably Nibblet from Texas, probably
- 32:31best return of this year, but no one stuck out as truly special.
- 32:36But we love punting. We're going to award it to a
- 32:38punter, the Ray Guy winner Brett Thorson from Georgia.
- 32:43Daniel, I don't even know if he had his best year this year.
- 32:45He was quiet, which tells me he probably did have his best year
- 32:48this year. Average 45 1/2 yards of punt,
- 32:51had a long of 66. You know, I think the stat was
- 32:54he only had, I'm trying to think it was 4 punts they were even
- 32:58returned to this year, right? Which is again the skill of the
- 33:01punter. Shout out to the Australian
- 33:04Brett Thorson, our 2025 Special Teams Player of the Year.
- 33:09Yeah. So looking at all of his career
- 33:11stats, if you go by net yardage, last year was his best year,
- 33:152024 also just his overall average last year was probably
- 33:18his best year. But yeah, I think if you
- 33:20encompass everything, I mean, it's funny because last year he
- 33:24gets injured at the end of the year, you're kind of questioning
- 33:26is he even going to be able to come back?
- 33:27You know, it's his plant foot. So I think that's another layer
- 33:31to it. Like, hey, he had this great
- 33:33year after being injured at the very end of last year with a a
- 33:36knee injury because he's a football player, man.
- 33:39He'll stick his nose in there and make a tackle.
- 33:41He's from Australia, so he knows, you know, I'm going to
- 33:45get down and and and dirty with my guys and just make, make
- 33:50tackles if guys are making a a return.
- 33:52So I'm excited for him. I'm glad that he did.
- 33:55And I guess if you look at his long, he had his second longest
- 33:59punt this year, 66 yards. His longest, which you know, I'm
- 34:04sure had some help was in 2022, a 75 yard punt, which does not
- 34:08seem possible. So of course there's probably a
- 34:10great role with that. But we have fun nonetheless.
- 34:13But yeah, he had still a very good, this was his second best
- 34:16year if you go by it. But after last year being such a
- 34:20great year and coming off an injury, I think this is a very
- 34:23special year for him. So good on him for the Ray Guy
- 34:25Award and even better, he gets the Superlative from the Extra
- 34:28Point podcast. Even better also send a ultimate
- 34:32plaques for next year. We'll, we'll send one to to
- 34:34Brett and. Maybe graphics plaques?
- 34:36Maybe Ben can help us with that. How?
- 34:39About there you go, Ben next project for him.
- 34:41How about freshman of the year and Daniel this this player
- 34:44almost won off the player of the year.
- 34:45We we had to talk about it, but I mean, was there any freshman
- 34:49more impressive than Malachi Tony this year?
- 34:52And again, not only the fact that they made it to the
- 34:54national championship, but Daniel early on in the season, I
- 34:57mean, opening game against Notre Dame, it's like, Oh my gosh,
- 35:00like. And apparently the Miami staff
- 35:02just could not sing his praises enough.
- 35:05You know, he did everything Miami's offense ran through him.
- 35:08You knew he was getting the ball.
- 35:10He still ends with 1200 yards, 11.1 yards per reception through
- 35:179 receptions, 10 touchdowns. He was just special with the
- 35:20ball in his hand. He ran the ball to, in my
- 35:23opinion, just the freshman that stuck out the most easily in the
- 35:26country this year with Malachi Tony.
- 35:28Yeah, I know we're going up and down this national championship
- 35:31game with all these guys. There's a reason they made it
- 35:33this far. Malachi, Tony, I think was was a
- 35:36surprise to Miami. And yeah, the way that he kind
- 35:39of blew up. I mean, I was joking.
- 35:42He is what everybody thought Ryan Williams was.
- 35:44You know, he's like the impact that Jeremiah Smith was to Ohio
- 35:47State, Mal Katoni doing everything for them for for
- 35:51Miami has a rushing touchdown as well.
- 35:53I know you mentioned he ran the ball and it wasn't nothing.
- 35:56He ran, you know, 23 carries. He had about about 5 yards of
- 35:59carry. So definitely was used all over
- 36:02the field and I think helped alleviate some pressure on
- 36:05Carson Beck at times. And you know, he's he's
- 36:08definitely probably their brightest star in the future.
- 36:11So I think they're probably hoping to keep him from the
- 36:14portal. I know that Miami is usually
- 36:16destination and not somewhere that people leave, but they
- 36:18probably are going to make sure he's well fed and taken care of.
- 36:22He will be he made a lot of money this offseason.
- 36:24That's usually something to reserve for NFL players.
- 36:26Now he he made a lot of money to come back to Miami and and be
- 36:29their receiver. So Congrats to Malachi, Tony
- 36:31Daniel. How about enough of players?
- 36:34How about the game of the year? There's a lot of good college
- 36:36football games this year. I will start with this.
- 36:39Our bias was definitely two games in the regular season
- 36:43played on college campuses. And if you add a rivalry in
- 36:47there, that's going to make it even better because that's
- 36:51what's amazing. That's the best part of college
- 36:53football according to you and me.
- 36:54And I think if you're trying to get someone into college
- 36:56football, you show them a rivalry game on campus and say,
- 36:59this is this is what we're all about.
- 37:00That's what's special. So there is a game that was not
- 37:03only one of the best games of the season, but also fit in that
- 37:06criteria. And Daniel, it might have won
- 37:08this even without that criteria, but this was a game.
- 37:13This is October, September, September.
- 37:15It was in September. Georgia at Tennessee, order 41.
- 37:19Excuse me, Georgia 44, Tennessee 41 in overtime.
- 37:24You know, the moment I'm going to remember from this game was
- 37:27fourth. Is it 4th and 6th?
- 37:294th and 6th? Yeah, I think so.
- 37:31Game on the line, need a first down to extend it.
- 37:33Gunner stock and there's a 38 yard touchdown might have been
- 37:36the best throw all all season to put it in that spot in that
- 37:40moment with the game on the line, you not only needed, you
- 37:44know, the first down there, you were down 8.
- 37:46So they had to go get the touchdown and the two point to
- 37:48send it to overtime. They got it.
- 37:51This game was back and forth lots of lead changes.
- 37:53I mean Tennessee was up 21. Seven Georgia storms back and
- 37:57takes a 24. You know, 2721 lead.
- 37:59Excuse me and it seemed like all right, you know, they're going
- 38:02to put this one away. Tennessee takes another lead,
- 38:04another lead chain. I mean, Tennessee gets up 3830.
- 38:07Before that big moment there was checker Neyland.
- 38:10Great uniform matchup. Yep.
- 38:13It checked all the boxes for me, 330 game.
- 38:15I mean checked all the boxes for me for an elite college football
- 38:18game. Then on top of it, we got look
- 38:21people like scoring. We got a high scoring game that
- 38:23what's overtime. So a really fun game to watch.
- 38:26That one's our 2025 Game of the Year.
- 38:29Yeah, I mean, there's a, there's not, there's not anything like
- 38:32a, a good rivalry game on campus.
- 38:36And so we we really enjoyed going through this list.
- 38:42There was some that were very good games that right there on
- 38:45the chopping block like Texas A&M, Notre Dame, like some games
- 38:48like that that were very good. They're on campus and we're, you
- 38:52know, glad to have watched them. But you know that I guess the
- 38:55edge was that this one was over, you know, overtime and it was a
- 38:59rival game. So all that to be said, this was
- 39:01kind of like the game that kind of put both teams on the map
- 39:05because people already kind of respected Georgia, but now they
- 39:08respected George's offense because of what they did against
- 39:11Tennessee. And then this was a way that
- 39:13they respected, you know, Tennessee seeing that they could
- 39:16go toe to toe with Georgia. So very fun, very, very good way
- 39:19to kind of jump start the year in September no less.
- 39:24Yeah, that was an excellent game.
- 39:25How about upset of the year? This could have won game of the
- 39:28year as well. Then you couldn't go anywhere
- 39:31else other than UCLA or Penn State.
- 39:33I think this was the most shocking result of the season
- 39:36into like what it did. Like this was the game Daniel,
- 39:39that that fired James Franklin. I know that he didn't get fired
- 39:42until after the Northwestern game, but this was the game that
- 39:46everyone was like, Oh no, like the bottoms going to fall out
- 39:49Because I think, I mean, all of us thought, including us, it was
- 39:53like, OK, they lose to Oregon and overtime.
- 39:54That sucks. Long season.
- 39:57You go 10 and two like Penn State tends to do, you're going
- 40:00to be in it. Yes, you got to go on the road
- 40:02to Ohio State, but even with that, it's like, OK, same old
- 40:04Penn State. I guess they go to the playoff
- 40:05attend and to lose to Oregon and Ohio State.
- 40:09We're sitting here watching it and I mean, I think it was 24/7
- 40:13at some point. And it's like, oh, and I think
- 40:15it was 27, seven. And then Penn State comes back,
- 40:18it's 2721 and it's like, OK, Penn State, you know, you get
- 40:23down from last week, you wake up, you had to go across the
- 40:25country. They're awake now.
- 40:26They're going to come take it. And then boom, 34, seven.
- 40:29UCLA goes 3421. Excuse me where it was like
- 40:33commit state kept getting close and then UCLA just kept putting
- 40:35it within 2 scores. You know, the stuff with new
- 40:39Heisel was cool with Rick in the studio watching it.
- 40:42And I think everyone thought that that he was their head
- 40:46coach for most of season. It's just their offensive cord.
- 40:51Yeah. But yeah, that was definitely
- 40:53the the result of the year that shook me the most.
- 40:55So upset of the year. Yeah, completely agree.
- 40:58Obviously we agreed before we did all this, but this is the
- 41:01game that broke college football this year.
- 41:03Like you're you're alluding to it, but this is the one that not
- 41:07only Penn State, but it just kind of it started the process.
- 41:10James Franklin gets fired, other guys are getting fired.
- 41:13You know, and then just it started that tumultuous, like
- 41:17people are churning towards, you know, when this college football
- 41:20season is going to end and what you know, who's going to do what
- 41:23and who's coaching where. And, you know, it kind of
- 41:26started the offseason conversation in September
- 41:28whenever this game was October. But yet like you said, Jerry
- 41:32knew high school was like the well he got promoted to play
- 41:36caller in this game and I feel like they just had a Jerry Cam
- 41:40the whole time. Obviously it was CBS, so it had
- 41:43or I think it was CBS, was it not?
- 41:46I think you're right. Or CBS Sports Network, whatever
- 41:48it was. But Rick Neuhauser, who works
- 41:50for CBS, was constantly on, you know, they were getting to him
- 41:54and he was emotional and great moment for obviously him being
- 41:57former UCLA coach, obviously dad of Jerry, Jerry Heisler.
- 42:00And then I, they just had a camera on him the whole time.
- 42:03And everybody's like, who's this guy with the blonde hair with
- 42:06the play sheet just, you know, dicing up James Franklin's
- 42:10defense. So very fun.
- 42:12And yeah, this game, this game broke college football, broke
- 42:16the Internet. But it has to be mentioned.
- 42:18We had to find a way to talk about this game if we're giving
- 42:21superlatives for the year. Yeah, I mean that would
- 42:24unbelievable upset again the one that stuck with us the most and
- 42:27shook college football. How about play of the year?
- 42:30It's going to involve fortunately get involved one of
- 42:33the same teams Penn State Indiana.
- 42:37If you watch this game here, we're going Daniel one toe tap
- 42:40that potentially saved in it definitely saved their perfect
- 42:44season. Daniel had Omar Cooper junior
- 42:46not caught this ball on 4th down the toe tap.
- 42:50Go ahead touchdown against Penn State.
- 42:53Deanna doesn't even make the Big 10 championship.
- 42:55Oregon would have gone ahead of them.
- 42:57No, that's not true because they beat Oregon.
- 42:59That's not true. I had in my head they would have
- 43:00they would have still made it, but perfect season ruined.
- 43:03Who knows how the season ends up.
- 43:05They have this loss and now now we'll forever sitting here
- 43:08wondering what will it take to beat Indiana this year.
- 43:11We'll never know. They didn't lose and this was
- 43:13the the play that saved their season.
- 43:16I I mean, I haven't seen a catch like this in a long time in
- 43:20college Football is unbelievable.
- 43:22Yeah, just a great play, you know, for it to have the
- 43:27ramifications that it did at the time, it just, it, it was a
- 43:32great play. There's not much else to be
- 43:34said. You know, you're an inch away
- 43:36from losing the game essentially, whether he catches
- 43:39it, gets his foot in or if anything goes wrong on that
- 43:42play, you don't get it. So it just kind of a culmination
- 43:45of really the only close game that they had or the only game
- 43:49this season where it felt like this is the one they're going to
- 43:53lose. Every other game I felt like
- 43:54they were in complete control the whole time.
- 43:56This one felt like they're going to lose this game and they took
- 43:59it back. It was their game.
- 44:01It was their game after that. All right, a couple fun ones.
- 44:04Daniel, we'd like to talk about uniforms again.
- 44:06One of my favorite things about college football.
- 44:08I'm glad that you've been able to share in that with me.
- 44:11Again, it's one of the things we've always loved, but we've
- 44:13never brought into the podcast and we feel like most fans are
- 44:16like us and that, yeah, you look like uniforms.
- 44:18Just something to talk about. It's unique with football
- 44:20because you've got a helmet, jersey and pants.
- 44:23It's all got. A lot of changes every week in
- 44:25the NFL. For the most part, they have,
- 44:28hey, this is our set and we have one alternate and that's it, you
- 44:33know, so, but college man, they could come out with something
- 44:37different every week with Oregon or whoever.
- 44:39That's right. It's a big deal specifically for
- 44:41college football. It is our uniform match above
- 44:44the year two schools played that I think have.
- 44:48I'm going to have to do this in the offseason, Daniel, But I
- 44:50think these two schools have a top five closet in the country.
- 44:55But USC versus Michigan, I mean, 2, it's a helmet game.
- 45:01You got red and blue. And you know me, Daniel,
- 45:04Michigan used to wear Mace pants.
- 45:05It's a rule of mine. There are a few exceptions or
- 45:08they can wear blue pants on the road.
- 45:10This is one of them because USC has gold pants.
- 45:13So again, for a great uniform matchup, yes, you need 2 great
- 45:18uniforms, but also contrast. And we've also talked about how
- 45:22the color of the grass matter something when you're watching
- 45:25on TV. How the stadium looks matter.
- 45:27Sometimes what network heads on matters as far as like how the
- 45:29cameras look. But this game was perfect.
- 45:32Michigan wore their their blue pants to contrast the gold pants
- 45:36of USC. You've got the winged helmet,
- 45:39You've got the Trojan on the side of USC, some with the Gray
- 45:41face mask. 2 elite college football uniforms.
- 45:45Not a great game, but an incredible uniform match up.
- 45:48This won the uniform match up of the week for was this week 7 and
- 45:51I kept tracking maybe week 11. Anyway, I kept tracking
- 45:54throughout the season and that that that became our number one
- 45:57for the entire season. Daniel is USC versus Michigan,
- 46:00the 2025 winner of the Uniform Match Up of the Year.
- 46:02Yeah, I'm glad that, you know, one of these things.
- 46:06I'm glad that this game was a blowout in the sense that it
- 46:11could really highlight that you weren't picking this because the
- 46:14game was good and you were just like hanging on every moment,
- 46:19you know, and and like, that's why the uniforms really stood
- 46:22out to you. It's like, no, no, no, no, no.
- 46:24The game ended up being a blowout.
- 46:27It did not matter. You know, there was a what, 31
- 46:31to 13 or whatever, but these uniforms look perfect.
- 46:35So I agree, we're both purists as far as that's concerned.
- 46:38And so it's it's nice to get, you know, for a couple of teams
- 46:42that have been doing it right for a long time.
- 46:44And like you said, Michigan didn't screw it up.
- 46:46They had the right pants on for the matchup.
- 46:49It looked great. We got it.
- 46:50We got to end with a funny one. Worst uniform of the year goes
- 46:55to every team that wore a blackout uniform and Black's not
- 46:59a part of the school colors. No, that that should have won it
- 47:01though. Other nominees include Michigan
- 47:03wearing all blue, Notre Dame wearing white pants.
- 47:08But I mean the real winner. If we're just talking about you,
- 47:10you see it and you're like, look, I'm not trying to pick out
- 47:13AG5 school here, but shout out to the huge zip miners.
- 47:18Dude, they're week 4. You know, if you're if you're on
- 47:20YouTube, it's on screen now, but if you're not, you're on
- 47:22podcast. Look this up when you get home.
- 47:24They're week 4U was a yeah. I'm looking at their posts like
- 47:29for our heroes. It's just terrible.
- 47:31Daniel, let me let me tell you something.
- 47:33If you're look, we love the troops.
- 47:35You know what I mean patriotic dude, we we support the troops.
- 47:40Let me tell you something. If I were the troops and this is
- 47:43how you're supporting me, please don't support me.
- 47:45You know what I mean They just these camo and like puke orange
- 47:50uniforms. It's just and it's like light
- 47:53camo with white numbers. Oh, it's just it's so bad.
- 47:56It's it's one of the worst uniforms I've seen.
- 47:58And they were look, there were a lot of bad ones.
- 48:01We had several nominees in the group chat of worst uniform of
- 48:04the year. But by far it goes to you too.
- 48:06It's the one that as I'm looking at all the bad uniforms, I'm
- 48:08like, there's some that are disappointing.
- 48:10You know, as far as like what you like Miami wearing their
- 48:12camo. It's like you have an excellent
- 48:14uniform and this is just, you know, but it's not as bad as
- 48:18this. It just missed the mark worse
- 48:19than you did. I think some of these are
- 48:21preferences versus like this is just atrocious.
- 48:25This, I think the word abomination can be used in this,
- 48:29in this scenario. I don't think that's too strong
- 48:32necessarily. This is the kind of stuff that
- 48:35gets somebody fired, whoever is in charge of this.
- 48:37Yeah, yeah. Certainly not calling for
- 48:39anyone's livelihood, but perhaps this role and responsibility
- 48:44gets removed from their job title.
- 48:46Yeah, I hope. So you just start to wonder when
- 48:50you look across the league and across the nation and you see
- 48:53places that do it so well or that do it at least mediocre,
- 48:58how this can still happen. And it's like, who is making is
- 49:03this, you know, Sue from accounting?
- 49:06And she just like, hey, I think we should do this because we're
- 49:09going to support the troops and Oh yeah, should we have the
- 49:13darker? No, no, no light camo and then
- 49:16this ugly or yeah, no, no, no. So I don't know if they made a
- 49:20deal with somebody or there was some sort of branding initiative
- 49:24or maybe it came off wrong in the printer, but they ran out
- 49:27the tunnel in these things and it was it was terrible if.
- 49:32They're a bit more proud, unfortunately.
- 49:33They are telling us that they don't want us to watch Group of
- 49:36five football, Group of 6 football.
- 49:39That's not the screams. That hurts me as a group of 6
- 49:43alumni, OK? I don't like that they're
- 49:46hurting the sport by wearing these.
- 49:48I will say let this be an opportunity to learn.
- 49:52Do not do this again and we'll see you next.
- 49:54Year, please. We'll see you next year, Daniel.
- 49:58Next week we will have our look, what's the state of college
- 50:01football? We'll give kind of a state of
- 50:03the sport a direct address next week.
- 50:05What needs to change? What do we love about the sport?
- 50:07That'll be a fun episode again to kind of look back and look
- 50:10forward for next season. But like it is the offseason,
- 50:12but we're not going anywhere. But we'll be back next week.
- 50:15And the week after that, it's signing dates.
- 50:17We'll recap all of recruiting, both transfer portal as it wraps
- 50:20up, high school as it wraps up. And we'll talk about the new
- 50:23players on these new teams. Be sure to follow us at the
- 50:26Extra Point pot on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
- 50:28You can follow Daniel on Twitter at Deep South Daniel.
- 50:31You can follow me on Twitter at Jacob Carnes with AK.
- 50:34That'll do it for this edition of The Extra Point.
- 50:36He is Daniel. I am Jacob.
- 50:38See ya.
