- 0:57you, if you've not already, to read my kindle book What Made the
- 1:03Golden Age Shine? And I talk about what really made the Golden Age of
- 1:11radio, television and cinema so special. And one of the big things we
- 1:17discussed there is just the humility and humanity of just so much of the so
- 1:23many of the performers at the time. It's available for the kindle title is
- 1:27What Made the Golden Age Shine. Also over at Great Detectors dot net this
- 1:33week we have our inter review of the last Nero Wolf novella collection, The
- 1:41Posthumous Death Times three on Saturday, and then on Sunday we count down the
- 1:47ten best mystery that we've done on the Great Detectors of Whole Time Radio.
- 1:53So check those articles out at Great Detectors dot net. You can also subscribe
- 1:57to these through your kindle. Now it's time for today's episode of the Lineup,
- 2:01the keenly clipped kennel that case. Bring on the line, ladies and
- 2:07gentlemen. We take you now behind the scenes of a police headquarters in a
- 2:13great American city, or under the cold, glaring lights. What that before
- 2:16us? The innocent, the vagrant, the thief, the murderer? This
- 2:23is the line up? Him? All right, how's it going? Okay?
- 2:54How about so same miss donald show? Yet Patterson called about ten minutes
- 3:00ago and said she caught a cold today. That doesn't think she should come
- 3:04out in the night there. I want to know if she could come down
- 3:06tomorrows. And it's a third time she's had some excapement. I'm coming down.
- 3:10We can't hold that suspect forever. Hey, yeah, I've got to
- 3:14smoke on you. Oh yeah, yeah, sure, thanks. Tell me
- 3:19why is it people who holler and yell for protection and law until they're blue
- 3:23in the face, and then when I have a chance to do something about
- 3:29apprehending and convicting a criminal, I just can't get in the car and drive
- 3:31down to the police station and identify a suspect. Just can't do it you'd
- 3:36tell me then. Now about Keith, it is he here who said it
- 3:39there this morning and at least late now you want him to look at that
- 3:43four fifty nine came in the afternoon an extradition. Yeah, so, Rigo
- 3:46is a guy's name, number thirty four. He'll be in the last run
- 3:49off, and I better hold it down by the door in case he comes
- 3:52down dark out there on the other side of the wire in the audience room,
- 3:55May I have your thank you? My name? The threads lineup.
- 4:04Each of the suspects you will see will be number. I'll call up a
- 4:08number, the name and charge. If you have any questions or identifications,
- 4:13please remember the number of signs of the prisoner as I call his name at
- 4:16the end of each line. When I ask for questions or identifications, call
- 4:20out the number. If you're sure or not too sure of the suspect.
- 4:25Adam Hell, the opposers have took your name. Will as sister there seated
- 4:29among you, please a bit part with your questions or identifications. When the
- 4:34prisoners leave here, they are sent to the latch room and dress back into
- 4:36their jail foes. It makes it quite difficult to bring them back after they
- 4:42leave here the questions I asked these suspects. I'm merely to get a natural
- 4:46tone of voice, so do not say too much attention to their answers,
- 4:48as they often lie. Bring it on the line, Ahl, right,
- 4:55boys, keep it moving. Line over to the end of the stage,
- 4:58past ship. Come on, I'll turn and face front. Hands to your
- 5:00side. You take your hands out of your pockets. I'll step out to
- 5:04the circle when I call your name a number. When you answer my questions,
- 5:09talk up to the people in the back of the room. Can hear
- 5:11what you have to say? Oh? Okay, number one? William?
- 5:15You older, grand temp Auto? Where do you live with him? Here
- 5:19in town? I live here? You got an address? Sure? All
- 5:24myers speak one thirty two pound myers speak. Watch your business well, I
- 5:29worked for Warner Gear loading in the B and O yard. Anyone arrested with
- 5:32you, William? Yeah, Jim Barnes, he's in the next room.
- 5:36I see him. One. I came a Jim Bond number sixteen. Any
- 5:43weapons? Will him? You know? So age and grow up yet I
- 5:46ask him to say, fill it up and check the oil. Okay,
- 5:49yeah, yeah, well say it, fill it up and check the oiler,
- 5:55saying it like a minute, like you were in a filling station.
- 5:58I wish I was ever mine. Fill it up and check the oil.
- 6:01Okay, sergeant, we'll want to see him all right over on that saturn

- 7:27care of him. I've been wiser the question. You haven't done anything.
- 7:31You haven't done anything that we want. Sixty three two eighty six A are
- 7:43arming and seven see the man seventy three three fifteen en oh hi, then
- 7:55come on in. Sorry, this is George mccattin. You're kind of Guthrie.
- 8:00How do you do? How do you do? They guards and chairs?
- 8:01Boy. About six months ago, old mister McCadden met a girl named
- 8:07Vivian Hannah posted to the restaurant over on Fifth Na. Yeah, I know
- 8:11the play. Well, I'm in the advertising business. My office is in
- 8:13the Park Norton building right across the street. Suppose you tell Lieutenant Guthrie what
- 8:16you told me? All right? I think something's happened to Vivian and started
- 8:20at the beginning, Police Paul, Well, Vivian is a pretty girl and
- 8:24always very pleasant and nice. I began seeing her now and then we've had
- 8:28dinner and we went to a few shows together. She lived by herself in
- 8:33a little apartment over on Maragonni Street. A couple of months ago, I
- 8:35went over there to pick her up in an older woman answered the door,
- 8:39and Missus Kennebuck. She said she was Vivian's mother. When Vivian came into
- 8:43the room, there was quite a scene. Missus Kennebuck was pretty upset about
- 8:48Vivian going out with me and kept repeating that Vivian was a married woman all
- 8:52When we got on side, Vivian told me that she had been married once,
- 8:54but it hadn't worked out, and she'd been divorced more than a year.
- 8:58The guy. His name was Bob Harmon. He lives in New Orleans
- 9:01now. She said her mother had tried to talk her out of divorcing this
- 9:05guy and never really accepted the fact that the marriage didn't exist anymore. Well,
- 9:09it seems her mother was going to live with her at the apartment from
- 9:11then on. When I brought Vivian home that night, the aldready was waiting
- 9:16up, and she had some pretty strong things to say, accusing Vivian of
- 9:20all sorts of things, and ordered me to get out and never come back.
- 9:24She hit Vivian the mouth and cut her lip before it was all over
- 9:26with. Well, after that, I wouldn't go to the apartment to pick
- 9:30up viv I met her downtown or someplace else. She quit at the restaurant
- 9:35and got a job in a defense plan. She wanted some more money,
- 9:37thought she could buy herself a car. Well, I was out with viv
- 9:41two weeks ago. We went to a movie. My phone was ringing.
- 9:43When I got home. It was missus Kenneva telling me that I'd never see
- 9:48Vivian again. And she was pretty mad. He said she knew what I'd
- 9:52been meeting viv all this time. How old was Vivian twenty seven or tenants?
- 9:56Sure old enough to do what she wants, don't you think? Yeah?
- 9:58Going Well, viv didn't call me ei the next day or the next,
- 10:03and I finally took a chance and called the apartment. I called three
- 10:05days. I didn't get an answer, so I drove by a couple of
- 10:09times and saw this car in the garage. You didn't want to go up
- 10:11to the apartment on account of missus Kennebac. Now that's right. I didn't
- 10:15want to stir up things, but I did want to see viv couldn't you
- 10:18call her? It were? Oh? I tried to get her, but
- 10:20I got the personnel office, and I was surprised when they told me she
- 10:24was taking an extended leave. A lessons or what else did they say?
- 10:28Well, that's all the information they gave me. It didn't seem right,
- 10:31and I'm worried about it a lot because I liked viv You mean, it
- 10:35seemed funny that she'd do this without telling you. Yeah, yeah, So
- 10:37I finally just went out the apartment and camp on the doorstep until the old
- 10:41woman showed up. She told me that Vivin was out of town on a
- 10:45vacation and she didn't know where, and she didn't know when she'd be back.
- 10:48She said there was no place I could write her either, And that's
- 10:52all the explanation you got. Yeah, And I thought about it a lot
- 10:54before I came down here. Well what do you mean, miss McKennon.
- 10:58Well, viv told me that her mother been beating her up all her life,
- 11:01since she was thirteen, or fourteen, and always accusing her things.
- 11:05She said she married this harmon guy just to get away from home. I
- 11:09tried to get viv to kick the old lady out or move away herself.
- 11:11I even offered to help her out financially, but she wouldn't listen to that.
- 11:16It was a louty situation for a nice kid like that to be in.
- 11:18The old lady just couldn't do anything but complain. Well, do you
- 11:22think that something violent might have happened between Vivian and a mother, Miss McKinnon,
- 11:26That's exactly it. If viv was taken any kind of a trip going
- 11:31anywhere, I'm sure she'd have told me, and I'm sure she'd have taken
- 11:33that little old forty seven FOURD with her. No. What makes you say,
- 11:37then, Well, she was crazy about that little car. Used to
- 11:39get out every Saturday and polish it up and take care of and look after
- 11:43it. She didn't have any money for a train ticket or a plane ticket.
- 11:46Liv lived it pretty close to the bone, and the cars still there,
- 11:50still lar in the garage. You say you saw her last two weeks
- 11:54ago. Two weeks ago, Tuesday, the nights, the old lady calling
- 11:56me up and told me I'll never see her again. This may be nothing.
- 12:01I might be yacking for no reason at all, but I'm worried,
- 12:03sick. I think that old lady killed Vivian if she had half a chance.
- 12:28Good morning, man, Bannie Quin. It's seventy two. Seems like
- 12:33spraying instead of water. You can cold last night though, Matt coming in?
- 12:37Yess in your office? Okay? Anything from Murpha crockettin. I'm still
- 12:41out the defense plan. I'll let you know, man, Hi, Hi,
- 12:48Hey, we're gonna have to get a new hot plate. Ben took
- 12:50me an hour to make up a pop let me sugar lind Yeah, here
- 12:54you go, Hey go, let's go with up. Mcknn complain yea Nash,
- 13:01he's out with Shelley checking on the cannon. Seems okay so far,
- 13:03good family, good business, no trouble. How about the girl? Nothing
- 13:07down here on her cry and said he'd stopped by the restaurant and ask around.
- 13:11They don't open untill noon. Uh boy, I could stand a lot
- 13:18of this weather. Yeah me too. Hey you gotta match? Yeah,
- 13:22catch how about missus keno Orn? They're gone hurt either, well, they're
- 13:30waiting Art just bought up into the best play or anything. Yeah, told
- 13:35him Vivian Harmon's on an extended leave of absence. She give any reason,
- 13:37didn't give anything. Mother called and told him Vivian had to leave town unexpectedly
- 13:43two weeks ago. The tenant gutfi, that's right, Missus Knova, Miss
- 14:01Sergeant Graham, how do what is please? Well, we'd like to talk
- 14:05to you a few minutes, if you can spend the time, missus kinderby
- 14:09and cleaning house? Is he important? Oh, we won't take too long.
- 14:11Come. I hate small apartments always so dat he is small places gift
- 14:20his way in Europe. I live in peak house cleaning is Vivian around the
- 14:26day? Vivian my daughter? Yes? Why you are here? Just a
- 14:31routine checkman's kind away. Friend of Vivian's complained that he tried to see her
- 14:35a couple of times, and when he talked to you, you told him
- 14:37driving and left town. He didn't think your information about it was very satisfactory.
- 14:41Left a cabin man, George, he went to you. That's right.
- 14:46The people at the defense plant tell us you phoned him and said,
- 14:50Vivian a left town rather suddenly. He's true, we'd like to know where
- 14:54she went, missus kindaway, do not know that? That seems it's rather
- 14:58strange. She's your daughter, you live with her. Didn't she tell you
- 15:03where she was going? No? Well, did she tell you why she
- 15:05was leaving town? She talks to me little Villian does She said it was
- 15:11jobbed singing with bands? Villian always wants to sing with band all her life?
- 15:16What band? What's the name of it? I do not know?
- 15:20Did she ever do that kind of work? Before one? When she is
- 15:24nineteen? She met her husband and band mister Harmon her ex husband her husband,
- 15:31well, they were divorced over a year ago, on't they He's her
- 15:33husband. She cannot change it. I see. Well, when exactly did
- 15:39the Vivian league town? He's two weeks now. Did she take a plane
- 15:45or a train? And do not know? Taxi pick her up early in
- 15:48the morning. She left in pretty much of a hurry, didn't she?
- 15:52Yes? Has she written you? Yes? Twice she has written? Do
- 15:56you have the letters here? No? I banned and never keep letters.
- 16:02Well, what did she say in the letters, missus Kinnavan? That she
- 16:04was well and happy and getting her own good do you happen to remember where
- 16:10they were written from. Oh, see Nix and then New Mexico place.
- 16:17He says, she's traveling with a band. Yes, but when did these
- 16:22letters come? It was Saturday, last Saturday, both of them on the
- 16:26same day. Yes. Did she give you an address you could ride back
- 16:30to? No? I tell you once before. Yes. Did you happen
- 16:37to notice if the letters were written on hotels Fishonary? No? I did
- 16:41not notice this. That George should not have come to do. He was
- 16:47worried about Vivian, missus kinnavy. She's all right. No need to worry
- 16:51about Vivian. She is not he's to worry about. She belongs to another
- 16:56man. You mean, Robert Harmon. He's her husband. You You don't
- 17:03like mister mccatton much, do you. I'm not like you know, worry.
- 17:07She's fine. I do not worry. Now you go. I finished
- 17:12my house. Well, would we look at her room first? This is
- 17:15her room? Bed comes down out of the word bathroom there. What about
- 17:22the closet where she kept her clothes, same place where bed comes from.
- 17:26What do you mind if we look at that for a second. Well,
- 17:30I am citizen of this country. Is there a law and We just like
- 17:34to look at it. Mister Kennaway. See what clothes she took with him?
- 17:38We can get a search warrant. All right, go ahead, mister
- 17:44Luke, I show you is closet. See yeah, these all her clothes
- 17:59on mine. Look a little small boy, Missus kinderwack some a Vivian,

- 18:19you mind letting us know? Please? Why? Just like to know where
- 18:22she is? What time? All right? You're gone now? Yeah,
- 18:26here's my car? Just call me there, all right, goodbye bye.
- 18:34It's lovely, really lovely now. Lash and I went out with a car.
- 18:48Yeah, we no shovel on the back, stick around it from a
- 18:52hardware and stow it out town. Some mud on the end. We took
- 18:53samples for the crime lab. Oh yeah, there was dried blood on the
- 18:56floor mat. The time February first, nineteen forty five. The place a
- 19:19battlefield in Western Europe. An American infantry company was crossing a stretch of open
- 19:26ground and a night attack on Heckercite. Suddenly, the group was pinned down
- 19:30by a vicious burst of machine gun fire from a house on the outskirts of
- 19:33Sounds. Private Edward D. Bennett started to crawl toward the edge of the
- 19:37field in order to flank the house. Even though a machine gunner spotted him
- 19:41and tried to cut him down, Bennett managed to reach the protection of a
- 19:42few trees. Under the cover of the trees, he worked his way to
- 19:47the rear of the building, which harbored the gunners. Disposing of the century
- 19:51with his trench knights, the young infantryman charged into the darkened house. There
- 19:55he was set upon by seven men in a furious hand to hand battle.
- 19:57He's silent all of them. Now his company could move on and sweep all
- 20:03resistance from the town. The fill is initiative and stalwart combatibility of Edward Day
- 20:07Bennett brought him the Medal of Honor Edward Bennett, who asked not what his
- 20:12country could do for him, but what he could do for his country.
- 20:32Yeah, gagering GONZEALI is staying there to keep an eye on it to day,
- 20:36and Murph and Crocket will take over it. For I'll need four more
- 20:41men. Yeah, all right, and were at the post office substation.
- 20:45Now okay, fine, okay, yeah, while they're sending him, then
- 20:51out the question. Harmon broken habit at checking into the musicians union and booking
- 20:56agencies around town to see about the band. But look it's almost two ben
- 21:00that male carrier should be in by now. Yeah he said he didn't wait
- 21:03for it. Good. How long are they going to take it? The
- 21:07crime raab only should have something in an hour? Uh, this is just
- 21:11here. Oh you the two policeman listen to me and James. That's right.
- 21:23My name is Guthrie. This is Sergeant Graham. Yeah. I hope
- 21:26you can help us on this. The postmaster tells us that you handled a
- 21:30route on the nine hundred block on Maraghani Street. Oh, yes, having
- 21:34can here for about eighteen years. What's it? Just checking? You know
- 21:38an apartment building at nine ten Oh hold the Sherwood. Yes, what about
- 21:45what A woman by the name of kind of lives there has a daughter named
- 21:48Vivian Harmon, missus kind of back tells us that she had a couple of
- 21:52letters last Saturday, one from Phoenix and ether from New Mexico. Do you
- 21:56happen to remember delivering them. Oh no, are you sure you know the
- 22:00place? Oh? Yes, yes, it is a big two story job.
- 22:03It's kind of a court affair. All the boxers are set in front
- 22:07and a little sort of any room man. Yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 22:08Yeah, I don't even recognize those names you gave me, and I
- 22:12remember names of the people on my RR two Or haven't you ever delivered mail
- 22:17to missus Kennebec before? Yeah, not that I know. How about the
- 22:22Vivian Harman? No, no horries. Let's see, there's sixteen units in
- 22:26that building now offhand, I could name fourteen families they deliver mail. Do

- 23:03able to tell you about that. We already checked them. They haven't made
- 23:06a delivery to that apop in hospital four weeks if anybody picked up a band
- 23:30here in ZHN. I went on the road with him the last month.
- 23:33He did his own booking. He didn't tell the union about it. Huh
- 23:36anything else, Well, it'll take a while on the trains and planes in
- 23:38the buses, cap companies being checked too. Asher and I worked a building
- 23:42all day long. Only three people in a place in o Vivian and a
- 23:45mother that missus. Deadman lives right below them. Didn't have much to say,
- 23:48didn't even notice. Vivian hadn't been around for a while. Man lives
- 23:52across the hall side of hearing, so he wasn't much healthy there, Manager,
- 23:56Merchant Blacklayer's waiting in your office. Uh yeah, he had quite a
- 23:59bit of same weech. Can I cut you don' want to see him for
- 24:00sure? With Matt knock on, he's in the crime lay I'm working with
- 24:04Sam. Oh, mister Blackler, this is Lieutenant cutthree. Hello, mister
- 24:10Blackman. Sergeant Quine tells me you might be able to help her. Yeah,
- 24:12I don't know about that. I hopeful mister Blacklers around the apartment house
- 24:17all the time a tenant. He thinks he saw Missus ken Over. I
- 24:18put something in the back seat of the Ford one night. Oh yeah,
- 24:22last Wednesday night, very late now or just about to google bed on or
- 24:26outside of my window, and met mister Blackler says. It looked like a
- 24:27rug or something. Isn't that right? Yeah? As a matter of fact,
- 24:32I got thinking about it next day and I went up to apartment.
- 24:33I'm sure enough living rub rug was gone. I asked Missus kenneback bart On
- 24:38the four again and she said she's just taken it out to be clean.
- 24:41Well, the rug was there when I saw the place this morning. But
- 24:45funny she'd taken herself that time of night too. Yeah, mister Blackman,
- 24:49you happen to know what time Missus kind of like came back that night.
- 24:52Oh gosh, I went right to sleep, but I know she was back
- 24:56Broughton early next morning. How do you know that? Well? I get
- 25:00up early, damn for the garbage cans and sweep the holes, and she
- 25:03was in front of her place with them all. I guess she spilled something
- 25:07in orders cleaning it up. Did you see what it was, no funny
- 25:11thing? Are doing that? Why? Why that's my job? Lieutenant?
- 25:32Why it as your gain? He came in ten minutes ago, yain hardware

- 30:33of those episodes of the Lineup that was you know, just screamed. Reminded
- 30:38me of Dragnet. I was waiting for you know, I will thought at
- 30:45the end, I was thinking, you know, what would happen is if
- 30:52this for Dragnet is when she talked about small places and h in hating small
- 30:59rooms, website would Joe Friday would say it's too bad? How's and she
- 31:03would say how's that? Because because where you're going, the rooms don't get
- 31:08much smaller. So I missed that feature. But other than that, this
- 31:15one really did have probably the strongest dragging at feel of any episodes so far.
