- 0:47Hello, my football friends.
- 0:47This is Darin Hayes of pigskindispatch.com welcome once again to the Pig Pen, your portal to positive football history.
- 0:53And welcome to another Tuesday where we get to visit with our friend Timothy p.
- 0:57Brown of footballarchaeology.com Tim.
- 0:59Welcome back to the Pig Pen, Darren.
- 1:01Good to chat with you again.
- 1:03And I think this is going to be story about some pears.
- 1:09Yeah, this is a, a really interesting one.
- 1:13Mr.
- 1:13Inside.
- 1:13Mr.
- 1:14Outside of army, it's a article you titled Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis.
- 1:20What can you tell us about this story?
- 1:22Well, before getting into them and no cheating, no looking at the article if you have it pulled up online, there have been six schools that have had back to back Heisman Trophy winners.
- 1:38Okay.
- 1:39With army with Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis being the second such school.
- 1:46So let's see if you can guess either the schools or, you know, the individuals, you know, take a shot at it.
- 1:55Well, I know Notre Dame's one of them because.
- 1:58But you have was a Michi and somebody else.
- 2:02Nope.
- 2:03No, Because we're.
- 2:09There's a Notre Dame one.
- 2:10I know that in fact.
- 2:12No, there is not.
- 2:13Oh, no.
- 2:14Okay.
- 2:15At least not, not according to my, my sources.
- 2:18Okay.
- 2:18Well, there is a, an Alabama though, recently.
- 2:22Correct.
- 2:24Devonta Smith and Bryce Young.
- 2:27Right.
- 2:27I know that.
- 2:282020 and 2021.
- 2:31I, I guess I don't know the other ones then.
- 2:33Okay.
- 2:34Another one was, you know, fairly recent.
- 2:36Oklahoma.
- 2:38Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 2:39Okay.
- 2:39Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murphy, usc.
- 2:45Now one of these is vacated, so.
- 2:48Oh, that's right.
- 2:49Okay.
- 2:49Reggie Bush and Leiner.
- 2:52Yeah.
- 2:53And then Archie Griffin.
- 2:59All right.
- 3:00Okay.
- 3:02Yeah, that's back to back the same guy, but yeah.
- 3:08And then the first one was.
- 3:09Yeah.
- 3:10Larry Kelly and Clint Frank.
- 3:14Okay.
- 3:14In 36 and 37.
- 3:16So they were the third or the second.
- 3:19Third Heisman Trophy winners.
- 3:23All right, interesting.
- 3:24So.
- 3:25Interesting.
- 3:26So, okay.
- 3:27But you know, focusing on Blanchard and Davis, you know, they're, they're, you know, kind of an interesting pair because, you know, I mean, army and Navy too, you know, just had these powerful teams in during World War II,
- 3:45you know, because you could still have, you know, students, you know, they basically were, they could be in the military in the, in, in the sense that they were in one of the service academies and Air Force didn't
- 3:59exist yet.
- 3:59So.
- 4:02They, so they were kind of students and you know, I mean, they were students obviously, but it was just like, you know, most schools lost so many of their guys, but because they were army and Navy, they, they
- 4:14actually attracted, you know, players and I think even either Blanchard or Davis actually played somewhere else first and then went to, then went to Army.
- 4:25But anyways, I mean, like they're 44 team, just like they went nine zero, won the national title.
- 4:32They held all their opponents to seven points or fewer, scored 46 or more seven times, you know, and this is, this is, you know, back in older school football, you know, it wasn't like purely running up the gut
- 4:47stuff, but, you know, like you said, Mr.
- 4:49Inside and outside, the 45 team had wins over 48 nothing win over Notre Dame, 61 nothing over Penn.
- 5:01You know, two powerful teams.
- 5:03You know, at the time.
- 5:04You know, now exactly what they were like, you know, those warriors, I'm not sure.
- 5:10And then a 46 team, 901, including the Yankee Stadium tie with Notre Dame, who was then number two.
- 5:21So they ended up winning there, winning the third national championship.
- 5:25But, you know, so one of the things that's kind of cool in the, this article and it's worth checking out, know, to, you know, click on the link that you provide is that it, it includes the, you know,
- 5:40diagrams of, of the plays, you know, of two plays.
- 5:43So there's a Davis quick sweep that, you know, Colonel Earl H.
- 5:48Blake, you know, diagram for, you know, some advertising thing that Atlas tires in 1940, some, you know, advertising premium that I picked up along the way.
- 6:00And yeah, it's just a classic.
- 6:05Like, you know, when I coached, you know, a couple of teams that I coached with, we basically ran wing T.
- 6:13And so some of the blocking schemes, you know, it kind of looks like the Packer sweep, you know, you got the, you know, the guard, everybody's kind of pulling to the play side or not, they're reaching to the
- 6:25play side, you know, and just, you know, just trying to stretch it out.
- 6:29And then these guys just, you know, the whole backfield lead blocks, you know, running the right or to the left.
- 6:38So I'm just kind of an interesting, you know, it's play design we don't see much of anymore.
- 6:44Right.
- 6:44I mean, we tend to since people have gone, you know, really since the modern key, you know, that's a lot of much more quick hitting place.
- 6:53You know, we still see sweeps a lot of times nowadays.
- 6:56It's going to ends.
- 6:59But anyway, so you got the quick sweep to him and then Blanchard, you know, it's basically a counter play.
- 7:05So out of a full house tee, he's the full back and he takes a jab step to the right and cuts back to the left.
- 7:12And that was one of his primary plays.
- 7:14So just know they, you know, they.
- 7:18They had obviously a tremendous coach in, In Blake.
- 7:22And then, you know, just these two complimentary backs, you know, that just made it really tough, you know, to, you know, how.
- 7:35You know, it's just.
- 7:35It's difficult to, you know, when.
- 7:37When you got a team that has Heisman level.
- 7:41Mr.
- 7:42Inside and Mr.
- 7:42Outside.
- 7:43You know, I mean, just imagine the, you know, what it looked like to, you know, looking down the barrel of that gun, you know.
- 7:50Yeah.
- 7:51Because it's just met.
- 7:52Oh, man, they were.
- 7:53They were really good.
- 7:54Yeah.
- 7:55Amazing team.
- 7:56Of course, Bill, we gotta.
- 7:58We gotta think about the two.
- 7:59Like you alluded to, everybody else in college football was depleted because of the war or the service.
- 8:05Teams were.
- 8:06They were stockpiled, you know, so.
- 8:08Yeah.
- 8:09Although, like, you know, in 46, those probably had to.
- 8:1346, 47 had to be some of the most talented teams that ever played college football because, like, even in 45, there were guys getting released.
- 8:23Like, if you were in the US when the war ended, they were looking to get rid of, you know, I mean, the military mustered people out as quickly as they could.
- 8:34And yet they were like, my dad got, you know, drafted later in 45 and then ended up in Japan not too long after that.
- 8:42But, you know, so they were still pulling new guys in, but a lot of people, they were just get them out.
- 8:50So then in.
- 8:51In.
- 8:52But in 46 and 47, the colleges were just filled with guys who had gone into the military anywhere from 41 through 45.
- 9:03Right.
- 9:04So they just had a, you know, so many talented players.
- 9:08So I mean, like 46.
- 9:10To have that level of talent and then just beat the snot out of people.
- 9:15I mean, army just had to be unbelievable.
- 9:19Yeah.
- 9:21You know, and then, you know, they.
- 9:22They played, you know, big high profile games.
- 9:25You know, the games like the Notre Dame game and in Yankee Stadium and stuff like that, just, you know, you know, one of the greatest games ever, probably.
- 9:34So I don't know, just really, it's, you know, kind of a just cool thing that they had the two Heisman Trophy winners and then, you know, the nature of the time just made it so interesting.
- 9:48Yeah, I.
- 9:50I look too to see.
- 9:52And you are correct.
- 9:53Notre Dame didn't have.
- 9:54I was.
- 9:54I said amici.
- 9:55It wasn't a Michi.
- 9:56I was thinking of Bertelli, But Bertelli was 43.
- 10:00But the two that were really close was Lou Jack and Leon Hart.
- 10:03But there was a year there was 47 and 49.
- 10:06They weren't consecutive.
- 10:07So yeah, yeah.
- 10:10I mean, she was a badger.
- 10:12Yeah, yeah.
- 10:12I've got.
- 10:14Got the Italian name sounding name.
- 10:16Yeah, yeah.
- 10:16Mixed up there.
- 10:17Fratelli.
- 10:18But yeah, as long as you bring up.
- 10:20As long as you bring up Amici, though, he's the answer to, well, half the answer to one of the great trivia questions of name a set of cousins who were Heisman Trophy winners and Best Supporting Actor winners.
- 10:38Well, I guess Amici's probably gonna be.
- 10:40There you go.
- 10:43Yeah.
- 10:43His cousin, Don Amici.
- 10:45Oh, okay.
- 10:46They were.
- 10:46They were relatives.
- 10:47I didn't really.
- 10:47Yeah.
- 10:48Put that together.
- 10:49He won Best Sporting Actor for.
- 10:51I'm blanking on the name of the movie.
- 10:52It's where these, you know, the old guys are swimming and stuff.
- 10:56You know, I mean, they get.
- 10:57Something happens where they become young again or they.
- 10:59They have the.
- 11:01The.
- 11:02It's like cocoon or something like that.
- 11:04Oh, okay.
- 11:05Yeah, yeah, okay.
- 11:07Yeah, you're right.
- 11:08He was in that.
- 11:09So.
- 11:09But, well, Donna Michi has a connection to football because I believe he was one of the owners of the AFC's Los Angeles Dons.
- 11:19Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 11:20I forgot about that.
- 11:21Yeah.
- 11:21So him and about three other four other stars, Hollywood stars were big sponsors of them.
- 11:27So.
- 11:28Yeah.
- 11:29So interesting stuff.
- 11:31But you have some great stories on these types of things from football's yesteryear that you tell in your tidbits, and maybe you could share with people how they can take in some of these.
