Chapter six, what befell at the Queen's Ferry. As soon as we came
• 0:07
to the inn, Ransom led us up the stair to a small room with
• 0:11
a bed in it, and heated like an oven by a great fire of
• 0:15
coal. At a table hard by the chimney, a tall, dark,
• 0:19
sober looking man sat riding in spite of the heat of the room. He
• 0:23
wore a thick sea jacket buttoned to the neck, and a tall, hairy
• 0:27
cap drawn down over his ears. Yet I never saw any man, not
• 0:32
even a judge upon the bench, look cooler or more studious and self possessed
• 0:37
than this ship captain. He got to his feet at once, and,
• 0:41
coming forward, offered his large hand to Ebenezer. I am proud to see,
• 0:46
mister Balfour, said he in a fine, deep voice, and glad
• 0:51
that you are here. In time. The wind's fair, and the tide
• 0:54
upon the turn. We'll see the old coal bucket burnin on the Isle of
• 0:58
May before tonight. Captain ho Sasan returned, my uncle, you keep your
• 1:04
room, uncle hot. It's a habit I have, mister Balfour, said
• 1:10
the skipper. I'm a cold, rife man by my nature. I have
• 1:14
a cold blood, sir. There's neither fer nor flannel, no, sir,
• 1:18
nor hot rum will warm up what they call the temperature. Sir.
• 1:23
It's the same with most men that have been carbonadoed, as they call it
• 1:26
in the tropic seas well. Well, captain replied my uncle, we must
• 1:33
all be the way we're made. But it chanced that this fancy of the
• 1:37
captain's had a great share in my misfortunes. For though I had promised myself
• 1:42
not to let my kinsman out of sight, I was both so impatient for
• 1:47
a nearer look of the sea and so sickened by the closeness of the room,
• 1:51
that when he told me to run downstairs and play myself a while,
• 1:55
I was fool enough to take him at his word. Away I went there,
• 2:00
leaving the two men sitting down to a bottle in a great mass of
• 2:02
papers, and crossing the road in front of the inn, walked down upon
• 2:07
the beach with a wind in that quarter. Only little wavelets, not much
• 2:12
bigger than I had seen upon a lake, beat upon the shore. But
• 2:16
the weeds were new to me, some green, some brown and long,
• 2:21
and some with little blatters that crackled between my fingers. Even so far up
• 2:25
the firth, the smell of the sea water was exceedingly salt and stirring.
• 2:30
The Covenant besides, was beginning to shake out her sails, which hung upon
• 2:35
the yards in clusters, and the spirit of all that I beheld put me
• 2:38
in thoughts of far voyages and foreign places. I looked too at the seamen
• 2:45
with the skiff, big brown fellows, some in shirts, some with jackets,
• 2:50
some with colored handkerchiefs about their throats, one with a brace of pistols
• 2:54
stuck into his pockets, two or three with knotty bludgeons, and all with
• 3:00
their case knives. I passed the time of day with one that looked less
• 3:04
desperate than his fellows, and asked him of the sailing of the brig.
• 3:07
He said they would get under way as soon as the ebbset, and expressed
• 3:12
his gladness to be out of a port where there were no taverns and fiddlers,
• 3:15
but all with such horrifying oaths that I made haste to get away from
• 3:20
him. This threw me back on Ransom, who seemed the least wicked of
• 3:23
that gang, and who soon came out of the inn and ran to me
• 3:28
crying for a bowl of punch. I told him I would give him no
• 3:31
such thing, for neither he nor I was of an age for such indulgences.
• 3:37
But a glass of ale you may have, and welcome, says I.
• 3:40
He mopped and mowed at me and called me names, but he was
• 3:44
glad to get the ale for all that. And presently we were set down
• 3:47
at a table in the front room of the inn, and both eating and
• 3:51
drinking with a good appetite. Here it occurred to me that, as the
• 3:55
landlord was a man of that county, I might do well to make a
• 3:59
friend of him him. I offered him a share, as was much the
• 4:02
custom in those days, but he was far too great a man to sit
• 4:06
with such poor customers as Ransom and myself. And he was leaving the room
• 4:11
when I called him back to ask if he knew mister Renkiler, ought.
• 4:15
I says, he a very honest man, And oh, by the bye,
• 4:20
says he was it you who came in with Ebenezer? And when I
• 4:26
told him, yes, you be no friend of his, he asked,
• 4:30
meaning in the Scottish way, that I would be no relative. I told
• 4:33
him no, none, I thought, not said he and yet you have
• 4:40
a kind of glyph of mister Alexander. I said, it seemed that Ebenezer
• 4:45
was ill seen in the country. Nay doubt, said the Landlord. He's
• 4:49
a wicked old man, and there's many would like to see him Gernon in
• 4:54
the tow Jennet Klouston him. Many mare that he has harried out of house.
• 4:59
And and yet he was once a fine young fellowtoo. But that was
• 5:03
before the soft gate abroad. About mister Alexander. That was like the death
• 5:09
of him. And what was it, I asked, Oh, just that
• 5:15
he had killed him, said the Landlord. Did you never hear that?
• 5:18
And what would he kill him for? Said I? And what for?
• 5:24
But just to get the place? Said he? The place, said I,
• 5:29
the Shaws, the other place that I can, said he. I
• 5:34
man, said I is that? So was Alexander, the eldest son.
• 5:42
Indeed he was, said the Landlord. What else would he have killed him
• 5:46
for? And with that he went away, as he had been impatient to
• 5:50
do from the beginning. Of course, I had guessed it a long while
• 5:56
ago, But it is one thing to guess, another to know. And
• 6:00
I sat stunned with my good fortune and could scarce grow to believe that the
• 6:04
same poor lad who had trudged in the dust from Ettric forest not two days
• 6:09
ago was now one of the rich of the earth, and had a house
• 6:13
and broad lands, and might mount his horse tomorrow. All these pleasant things
• 6:18
and a thousand others crowded into my mind as I sat staring before me out
• 6:24
of the inn window, and paying no heed to what I saw. Only
• 6:28
I remember that my eye lighted on Captain Hose season down on the pier among
• 6:31
a seamen, and speaking with some authority. Presently he came marching back towards
• 6:38
the house, with no mark of a sailor's clumsiness, but carrying his fine,
• 6:43
tall figure with a manly bearing, and still with the same sober,
• 6:46
grave expression on his face. I wondered if it was possible that Ransom stories
• 6:53
could be true, and half disbelieve them. They fitted so ill with the
• 6:57
man's looks. But indeed he was neither so good as I supposed him,
• 7:01
nor quite so bad as Ransom did. For in fact, he was two
• 7:06
men, and left the better one behind as soon as he set foot on
• 7:10
board his vessel. The next thing, I heard my uncle calling me,
• 7:15
and found the pair in the road together. It was the captain who addressed
• 7:18
me, and that with an air very flattering to a young lad of grave
• 7:24
equality. Sir says he, mister belfour, tells me great things of you,
• 7:30
And for my own part, I like your looks. I wish I
• 7:33
was for longer here, that we might make the better friends, but will
• 7:38
make the most of what we have. He should come on board my brig
• 7:42
for half an hour till the ebb sets and drink a bowl with me.
• 7:46
Now, I longed to see the inside of a ship, more than words
• 7:49
can tell, but I was not going to put myself in jeopardy. And
• 7:54
I told him my uncle and I had an appointment with a lawyer. Ay
• 7:59
ay said. He passed me word of that. But you see, the
• 8:03
boat'll set you ashore at the town pier, and that's but a penny stonecast
• 8:07
from Rancaller's house. And here he suddenly leaned down and whispered in my ear,
• 8:13
take care the old tod he means mischief. I'm aboard till I can
• 8:16
get a word with you. And then, passing his arm through mine,
• 8:20
he continued aloud as he set off towards his boat. But come, What
• 8:24
can I bring you from the Carolinas. Any friend of mister Balfour's can command
• 8:31
a roll of tobacco, Indian featherwork, a skin of a wild beast,
• 8:35
a stone pipe, the mocking bird that mews for all the world like a
• 8:39
cat, the cardinal bird that is as red as blood. Take your pick
• 8:43
and say your pleasure. By this time we were at the boat's side,
• 8:48
and he was handing me in. I did not dream of hanging back.
• 8:54
I thought the poor fool that I had found a good friend in help her,
• 8:58
and I was rejoicing to see the ship. As soon as we were
• 9:01
all set in our places, the boat was thrust off from the pier and
• 9:05
began to move over the waters. And what with my pleasure in this new
• 9:09
movement am I surprise at our low position, and the appearance of the shores,
• 9:15
and the growing bigness of the brig As we drew near to it.
• 9:18
I could hardly understand what the captain said, and must have answered him at
• 9:22
random. As soon as we were alongside, where I sat fairly gaping at
• 9:28
the ship's height, the strong humming of the tide against its sides, and
• 9:31
the pleasant cries of the seamen at their work host season, declaring that he
• 9:37
and I must be the first aboard, ordered a tackle to be sent down
• 9:41
from the main yard. In this I was whipped into the air and set
• 9:45
down again on the deck, where the captain stood ready waiting for me,
• 9:48
and instantly slipped back his arm under mine. There I stood somewhile, a
• 9:54
little dizzy with the unsteadiness of all around me, perhaps a little afraid.
• 10:00
He it vastly pleased with these strange sights. The captain meanwhile pointing out the
• 10:03
strangest and telling me their names and uses. But where is my uncle?
• 10:09
Said I. Suddenly, Hi said, hose season, with a sudden grimness.
• 10:16
That's the point I felt. I was lost. With all my strength,
• 10:22
I plucked myself clear of him and ran to the bulwarks. Sure enough
• 10:26
there was the boat pulling for the town, with my uncle sitting in the
• 10:28
stern. I cave a piercing cry, help, help, murder, so
• 10:35
that both sides of the anchorage rang with it, and my uncle turned round
• 10:39
where he was sitting and showed me a face full of cruelty and terror.
• 10:45
It was the last I saw. Already, strong hands had been plucking me
• 10:48
back from the ship's side. And now a thunderbolt seemed to strike me.
• 10:54
I saw a great flash of fire, and fell senseless. Of chapter
