- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to Cracking This Morning, a presentation of the Kracking
- 0:06Speaker 1: Audio Network and Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ
- 0:09Speaker 1: R FM. Here's Mike Benton.
- 0:12Speaker 2: If you ask Adam Larson, there's only one way to
- 0:15Speaker 2: look ahead after last Saturday.
- 0:17Speaker 3: When every team goes through tough stretches, it's it's a
- 0:23Speaker 3: long season, and I mean, you lose one and then
- 0:29Speaker 3: you can go on a heater or too. So we're
- 0:31Speaker 3: just gonna stay stay positive. I thought today was a
- 0:35Speaker 3: lot better than the last three, so it's definitely on
- 0:40Speaker 3: a step in the right direction. But we have to
- 0:43Speaker 3: start stringing some games together.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Here, So how can that mindset fuel them for this
- 0:48Speaker 2: challenge coming up on this Monday, December eighth. Mike Betton
- 0:52Speaker 2: with you for Cracking this morning, because the Cracking take
- 0:54Speaker 2: on a team that has been on a November heater
- 0:57Speaker 2: and they are the Minnesota Wild, making their first trip
- 0:59Speaker 2: into I'm a Pledgarina all season, which will also pit
- 1:03Speaker 2: Freddie Gudreau against his former team for the first time
- 1:06Speaker 2: since the Wild traded him to the Kraken this last June. Additionally,
- 1:11Speaker 2: it's set to be Chandler Stephenson's six hundredth career NHL
- 1:15Speaker 2: game two days before his own Bobblehead Night coming Wednesday
- 1:19Speaker 2: against the Los Angeles Kings of Chorus Curtis c our
- 1:22Speaker 2: Friends at Toyota more details by the way NHL dot
- 1:25Speaker 2: com slash Cracking. We got a lot to talk about
- 1:28Speaker 2: here with Joe O'Donnell also joining us. He is the
- 1:31Speaker 2: radio oplay by play voice for the Wild heard locally
- 1:34Speaker 2: on k Fan additionally on the Wild Radio Network. And
- 1:37Speaker 2: we'll get into the Carilla Caprisov Matt Boldi duo which
- 1:41Speaker 2: has given the Krake in plenty of fits over the
- 1:43Speaker 2: years in this November start, which includes the emergence of
- 1:47Speaker 2: a goaltender nicknamed the Wall that's yesper Valsta. Joe O'Donnell
- 1:51Speaker 2: joining us here in just a bit. We have more
- 1:54Speaker 2: to cover, by the way on Cracking Weekly, which will
- 1:56Speaker 2: drop later on here in this same podcast space. Myself, ever,
- 2:00Speaker 2: it fits you al Kiniski as well to give the
- 2:03Speaker 2: views on the current state of affairs but trying to
- 2:06Speaker 2: snap out of a five game losing skid, but doing
- 2:09Speaker 2: so with continued progress in their game. When it comes
- 2:12Speaker 2: to shot generation against the Red Wings, they had seventy
- 2:16Speaker 2: seven shot attempts, a new season high. So we're passing
- 2:20Speaker 2: the seventy four that they set against the Edmonton Oilers
- 2:23Speaker 2: in a night that got well off the tracks in
- 2:25Speaker 2: a hurry in that nine to four defeat back on
- 2:27Speaker 2: Thursday at Rogers Place. Nonetheless, the Crack and building a
- 2:31Speaker 2: pretty convincing second period until a pair of Ley goals
- 2:35Speaker 2: from James Van Riemsdyke and Patrick Kine in period two
- 2:39Speaker 2: and period three, respectively were the difference. And now the
- 2:42Speaker 2: crack and trying to stop the Wild in their tracks
- 2:46Speaker 2: in Minnesota's road trip finale where they come off a
- 2:49Speaker 2: lost to Vancouver back on Saturday. Good Friend Radio play
- 2:53Speaker 2: by play voice of the while Joe O'Donnell joining us
- 2:56Speaker 2: on Cracking this morning here locally on Kfan and all
- 3:00Speaker 2: across the behemoth Minnesota Wild Radio network. Joe, great to
- 3:04Speaker 2: hear from you once again, my friend, looking forward to
- 3:06Speaker 2: seeing you, and I first begin with the comment by
- 3:09Speaker 2: Bennie henistroso to begin last month, we're one to zero
- 3:14Speaker 2: the Wild then go on a heater in November. So
- 3:17Speaker 2: what game or what moment told you this is coming?
- 3:22Speaker 4: I don't know if there was one, because just how
- 3:24Speaker 4: bad October was, to be honest, Mike like just not
- 3:28Speaker 4: to start anybody was expecting or hoping for. You know,
- 3:32Speaker 4: you go back a year ago and the Wild came
- 3:35Speaker 4: out of the gates and were unbelievable. In large part
- 3:39Speaker 4: why they eventually got into the playoffs last year and
- 3:42Speaker 4: the final game was because of their you know, seven
- 3:45Speaker 4: to one and two start and leading the NHL points
- 3:48Speaker 4: come New Year's Day last season. Then you fast forward
- 3:51Speaker 4: to the start of this year and just three wins
- 3:53Speaker 4: in October and you know a lot of questions about
- 3:57Speaker 4: why guys are producing and the turnovers and goaltending wasn't great.
- 4:01Speaker 4: And Jared Spurgeon calls a players only meeting on Halloween,
- 4:04Speaker 4: and he didn't do it after the loss to the
- 4:07Speaker 4: Penguins on October thirtieth, and I think his experience in
- 4:10Speaker 4: leadership played a big part there, Like he you know,
- 4:13Speaker 4: he let everybody go home sleep on it, and the
- 4:16Speaker 4: next day before practice, you know, they hash it out
- 4:20Speaker 4: and the message was sort of, you know, everybody just
- 4:22Speaker 4: do their job, relax here and kind of let things
- 4:26Speaker 4: take care of himself. And they beat the Canucks on
- 4:28Speaker 4: November the first, and to your point, there he have
- 4:30Speaker 4: been after the game. Beny hint of Stroza said, hey,
- 4:33Speaker 4: we want to know this month, and you know, John
- 4:36Speaker 4: Hines is kind of like, all right, well that's you know,
- 4:40Speaker 4: an interesting comments and it was accurate, and I think
- 4:43Speaker 4: they kind of build on it, just you know, one
- 4:45Speaker 4: game it's time. And once they got momentum going, it
- 4:49Speaker 4: seemed like everything went well right, like the goaltending they
- 4:51Speaker 4: weren't getting in October, coming up with big staves. The
- 4:54Speaker 4: defense has tightened up, the star players were scoring, the
- 4:57Speaker 4: secondary players scoring, the special teams improved. So you know,
- 5:01Speaker 4: no secret why when you have all those things going
- 5:03Speaker 4: for you, you can get on a bit of a run.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Speaking of that goaltending, yes, for valstat three goals allowed
- 5:09Speaker 2: second period at Vancouver, but this doesn't define the kind
- 5:12Speaker 2: of month he had where it was the end of
- 5:15Speaker 2: a road shutout streak for him. He had NHL Rookie
- 5:17Speaker 2: of the Month honors from this past month and he
- 5:20Speaker 2: has arrived at the Peers. How much of a difference
- 5:23Speaker 2: has he made in the wild in their game.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Well, it's been huge. You know, if Philip Gustison starts
- 5:29Speaker 4: against the crack and it'll be like fourteen s trade
- 5:31Speaker 4: games or the wild of alternative goaltenders. You don't see
- 5:33Speaker 4: that a lot. Just shows you how good both of
- 5:36Speaker 4: them have been. And yes, for pretty much after every
- 5:39Speaker 4: game during that run four shutouts and six starts, was
- 5:43Speaker 4: you know, joining some elite list, you know, fourth rookie
- 5:46Speaker 4: goalie to do this, third rookie goalie to do this,
- 5:50Speaker 4: first goally to do this in thirty years. Like those
- 5:52Speaker 4: are the types of things that make for a very
- 5:55Speaker 4: special season, make it fun to talk about when you
- 5:58Speaker 4: rehash some of the elite company he was joining. It's
- 6:01Speaker 4: just great to see that, you know, his his work
- 6:04Speaker 4: in the summer is paid off and right now in
- 6:06Speaker 4: the Wild feel very comfortable cook goaltenders. So if he
- 6:08Speaker 4: and philped up.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Joe o'donald joining us here on Cracking this Morning again
- 6:11Speaker 2: radio play by play Voice of the Wild. I want
- 6:13Speaker 2: to get to the big stars here in First off,
- 6:15Speaker 2: Carell Caprisov had that massive contract extension that he got
- 6:20Speaker 2: all locked up before this season, eight year deal, and
- 6:24Speaker 2: that maybe raise some eyebrows at the beginning, but he
- 6:26Speaker 2: is still producing. Matt Boldi has arrived as a star
- 6:30Speaker 2: in this league. It seems Joe and these two have
- 6:32Speaker 2: just given the Crack in absolute fits for this year's context,
- 6:36Speaker 2: what parts of their game have really stood out the
- 6:39Speaker 2: most so far.
- 6:40Speaker 4: That's funny you mentioned that because I was looking at
- 6:42Speaker 4: it last night, and yes, they have both absolutely crushed
- 6:45Speaker 4: the Crack and in their in their brief careers against them.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Same for Matt Zucarello. I think it's his highest points
- 6:51Speaker 4: per game against any team is against the Cracking. But
- 6:54Speaker 4: you know it's those two guys think pretty Soft and
- 6:58Speaker 4: Boldie or what drives us then and for the wild
- 7:02Speaker 4: the issue has become at times over the last few
- 7:05Speaker 4: years and now you know, maybe in the last couple
- 7:07Speaker 4: of games, is when they're not putting up multiple points,
- 7:10Speaker 4: you know who else is able to fill the net?
- 7:12Speaker 4: Who else is agilable to produce consistently help you win
- 7:17Speaker 4: a game maybe three to two when those guys aren't
- 7:19Speaker 4: on the score sheet. So that's still something the while
- 7:21Speaker 4: to try to work out that secondary scoring. I don't
- 7:23Speaker 4: know if that's internal external or just getting healthy. They
- 7:26Speaker 4: have a bunch of guys out with injury. But when
- 7:28Speaker 4: you look at prize off in Boldie, any night they
- 7:31Speaker 4: can turn a game, and that Bowdie's two hundred foot
- 7:34Speaker 4: game playing on the line with Mark Johanson and juwel
- 7:36Speaker 4: Eric Sinet during that seven game winning streak and twelve
- 7:38Speaker 4: game point street for the while, he was phenomenal, like
- 7:42Speaker 4: shutting down you know, the mckinnons of the world, the
- 7:45Speaker 4: Leo Carlson's of the world, like whoever was coming in
- 7:47Speaker 4: with their top line. That Eric Sinec line with Johanson
- 7:51Speaker 4: and Boldie was spectacular, both defensively and playing in the
- 7:54Speaker 4: offensive zone and forcing those star players on the other
- 7:57Speaker 4: team to defense. So, yeah, Cabrizo to have a big
- 7:59Speaker 4: time track. He's gonna produce most nights. Boldie has really
- 8:02Speaker 4: risen onto the scene and should be a big part
- 8:05Speaker 4: of Team USA's Olympic you know, hope hope for gold
- 8:08Speaker 4: this year. And yeah, both those guys are just excellent,
- 8:11Speaker 4: excellent hockey players.
- 8:12Speaker 2: John Hines said after the loss in Calgary on this
- 8:15Speaker 2: road trip that they just got outplayed, and in Vancouver
- 8:18Speaker 2: the feeling was different where they maybe deserved a bit
- 8:21Speaker 2: of a better fate. What did you take away from
- 8:24Speaker 2: their game, Joe under the hood heading into what will
- 8:27Speaker 2: be the road trip finale coming up this evening.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Unfortunately, that's just hockey. I mean, the night before the
- 8:34Speaker 4: Wild played the Canucks on Friday. The Canucks outplayed the Mammoth.
- 8:37Speaker 4: I watched some of that game. They out shot them,
- 8:39Speaker 4: they out chanced them. They lost four to one. You know,
- 8:42Speaker 4: you could probably say that that last night John Hines'
- 8:46Speaker 4: points that the Wild deserved a better fate. They had
- 8:48Speaker 4: a ton of chances early, some great, great chances to
- 8:52Speaker 4: ket A Tolapilo, the young goaltender, played really well for
- 8:54Speaker 4: the Canucks, and sometimes it just goes that way. Tend
- 8:57Speaker 4: to think that stuff will balance out, you know, by
- 8:59Speaker 4: the end of the season. So if you can just
- 9:02Speaker 4: stay with it, you know, defend well, don't give up
- 9:06Speaker 4: Bob Man rushes all those sorts of things, and get
- 9:08Speaker 4: some good goaltending. This File team's going to be in
- 9:10Speaker 4: a lot of games. But yeah, they probably felt to
- 9:11Speaker 4: deserve a better fade against Vancouver. You know, they're one
- 9:15Speaker 4: two and zero on the road trip right now. Haven't
- 9:17Speaker 4: lost back to back games and regulation since late October.
- 9:20Speaker 4: So that'll be the challenge now against Seattle for Minnesota
- 9:23Speaker 4: is to you know, try and get out of this
- 9:25Speaker 4: quick little two game losing streak, get back in the
- 9:27Speaker 4: wind calm, and we.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Can't bury the lead here as far as the crack insight,
- 9:30Speaker 2: because this will be the first game that Freddie Gudreaux
- 9:33Speaker 2: plays in seeing his former teammates since the June trade
- 9:36Speaker 2: when he left Minnesota.
- 9:38Speaker 1: So it wouldn't be.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Surprising here to see plenty of conversation back at the
- 9:42Speaker 2: red line when these two teams warm up a little
- 9:44Speaker 2: past six thirty Pacific time. What did Freddie Gudreau mean
- 9:47Speaker 2: to the Wild for the years that he was there?
- 9:50Speaker 4: Man, He's just a special person and really enjoyed being
- 9:56Speaker 4: around him. You know, watched him play in the American
- 9:58Speaker 4: League for a number of years. Song come up to
- 10:01Speaker 4: the NHL, have a little playoff run there with Nashville,
- 10:06Speaker 4: and and you know, and you look at some of
- 10:08Speaker 4: the things that Freddie Gudreau did early in his career,
- 10:11Speaker 4: and it was he was, you know, in the EHL,
- 10:13Speaker 4: he was in the American League, he's in the NHL
- 10:15Speaker 4: like and now he's become just a great two way player,
- 10:20Speaker 4: complay at center, complain a wing. You won't meet a
- 10:23Speaker 4: nicer guy around the rink. Genuinely cares about his teammates
- 10:26Speaker 4: and the staff. And that was shocked when he got dealt.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Didn't see it coming. His cap hit was manageable, and
- 10:34Speaker 4: I was, you know, also personally, you know, rattled about
- 10:37Speaker 4: it because he's just such a good guy, always takes
- 10:39Speaker 4: the time to talk to you. So I'm sure a
- 10:42Speaker 4: lot of his teammates feel the same way I do.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Obviously they'd be a lot closer to him than I am.
- 10:45Speaker 4: And just a really good guy. And I'm glad he's,
- 10:48Speaker 4: you know, getting healthy out for the crack and hopefully
- 10:50Speaker 4: he has great success.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I think there's one thing to be said, where you know,
- 10:54Speaker 2: you come from this league. I've come from this league.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Freddie Goodreau comes from this league. If you can find
- 10:59Speaker 2: a way to grind down from the EHL and make
- 11:02Speaker 2: it all the way to the top, it is quite
- 11:03Speaker 2: the testimony.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know he has a very special relationship
- 11:07Speaker 4: Freddie udrou does with Dean Everson, the former wild Heide coach.
- 11:10Speaker 4: That's who had him in Milwaukee. That's who sent him
- 11:12Speaker 4: to the EHL. Not an easy thing to do from
- 11:15Speaker 4: a coach or player perspective. He went down there, he
- 11:18Speaker 4: worked on the game, he came back to the American League,
- 11:20Speaker 4: proved he was ready then, you know, to really become
- 11:22Speaker 4: an NHLer. I know, those two are still very close
- 11:25Speaker 4: in fact, and Dean Everson was release of his coaching
- 11:28Speaker 4: duties a couple of years back. John Hines took over.
- 11:30Speaker 4: I mean Freddie Gudro took it personally. He wasn't having
- 11:34Speaker 4: a great year at the time. You know, he was hurt,
- 11:37Speaker 4: He was just not himself, and I know he took
- 11:40Speaker 4: that personally very hard. You know that Dean Everson lost
- 11:43Speaker 4: his job, not because Freddie Gudrou, But that's just the
- 11:46Speaker 4: type of person he is, the type of leader he is,
- 11:48Speaker 4: and again really just an all round good guy, gets
- 11:51Speaker 4: two hundred foot player, and I don't think there's anybody
- 11:54Speaker 4: on the wild Side that wishes anything but the best
- 11:56Speaker 4: of luck.
- 11:56Speaker 2: So going to be a fun storyline here to track
- 11:59Speaker 2: when the Wild them in town. Joe, Hey, appreciate this
- 12:01Speaker 2: as always, Bud, have a great show and look forward
- 12:04Speaker 2: to seeing you back upstairs once again.
