- 0:01Jules Verne, a writer who was not himself a scientist,
- 0:06nevertheless inspired generations of scientists.
- 0:10He did not invent the idea of the submarine, but in his book
- 0:1520,000 Leagues Under the Sea he worked out a number of
- 0:19conceptual issues so that submarine use could become
- 0:22widespread, and he opened up the wonder and beauty of the
- 0:27undersea world so that people would be inspired to try.
- 0:32Similarly, he was not the first to propose the idea of flying to
- 0:37the moon, but in his book From the Earth to the Moon, he
- 0:42developed the story in such a way that once again people were
- 0:46inspired to try, eventually landing people on the moon and
- 0:51returning them safely to the earth.
- 0:54Imagination has always led the way to breakthroughs in science.
- 1:01Nikola Tesla cited a vision he had while walking in a field as
- 1:05the basis for his invention of the alternating current motor,
- 1:09which he eventually developed, perfected, and patented.
- 1:14He made it clear that it was vision that led to his greatest
- 1:18scientific breakthroughs, while his mastery of technical skills
- 1:22in the field allowed him to translate the vision into the
- 1:26reality. Albert Einstein famously stated
- 1:31quote. Imagination is more important
- 1:34than knowledge. Knowledge is limited.
- 1:37Imagination encircles the world. End Quote as well as quote.
- 1:44Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's
- 1:49coming attractions. End Quote.
- 1:52Einstein went on to say, quote, we can't know something is
- 1:56possible or impossible until we try it, and without imagination
- 2:02it would never occur to us to try it.
- 2:05End Quote. A disciple notes Men of science
- 2:11must be having imagination. The mother writes quote a lot,
- 2:18otherwise they would never discover anything.
- 2:21In fact, what is called imagination is a capacity to
- 2:24project oneself outside realized things and towards things
- 2:29realizable and then to draw them by the projection.
- 2:34One can obviously have progressive and regressive
- 2:37imaginations. There are people who always
- 2:40imagine all the catastrophes possible and unfortunately they
- 2:45also have the power of making them come.
- 2:49It's like the antennae going into a world that's not yet
- 2:52realized, catching something there and drawing it here.
- 2:57Then naturally it is an addition to the earth atmosphere, and
- 3:01these things tend towards manifestation.
- 3:05It is an instrument which can be disciplined, can be used at
- 3:09will. One can discipline it, direct
- 3:13it, Orient it. It is one of the faculties one
- 3:17can develop in himself and render serviceable.
- 3:20That is, use it for definite purposes.
