Hot dogs aren’t sandwiches—according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, who’ve fiercely defended their classification since 2015. Once they admitted hot dogs were sometimes called sandwiches, they’ve since declared them a unique category, backed by a 2021 survey showing over half of Americans agree.
