- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll
- 0:21everyone. If you guys watched Mini Tech
- 0:23Scroll yesterday, then you'll see I'm in the exact same
- 0:26outfit. I am pre recording this episode
- 0:30and I just do not care to change my outfit so it looks like I
- 0:33recorded it on a different day. So you're getting double denim
- 0:37twice in a row. All right, let's get into the
- 0:40stories for today. Actually, please rate, review
- 0:42and subscribe. Annabelle's always like you need
- 0:44to plug the newsletter. You need to say rate, review and
- 0:46subscribe. You need to plug the buy me a
- 0:48coffee and I literally just always forget.
- 0:50Can you tell that she's a Capricorn?
- 0:52She keeps me in check. So all of those things.
- 0:55Please do all of those things. OK, Annabelle will be happy that
- 0:57I reminded you. OK, let's get into these stories
- 1:00for today. So the first one that I have for
- 1:02you guys, this is wild. We need to talk about Elf's new
- 1:07campaign. OK, like Elf Beauty, the makeup
- 1:11brand, because it is starring one of the most random
- 1:17ambassadors you could ever choose.
- 1:19And I am unfortunately having to talk about him two weeks in a
- 1:22row. Matt Rife.
- 1:24The campaign is legal themed and makes the case that it's quote
- 1:28practically criminal to pay too much for for high quality
- 1:30beauty. In the video for the campaign,
- 1:32Matt Rife is starring alongside famous drag queen Heidi and
- 1:35Closet. Together, the two form a legal
- 1:38firm aiming to defend your eyes, lips and funds.
- 1:42The premise of the campaign is actually quite smart and it
- 1:45feels like it matches the brand, but choosing Matt Rife is
- 1:50literally crazy. Like, I don't even know how else
- 1:52to describe that. If you're unfamiliar with Matt
- 1:55Rice, he has faced controversy over the years for a number of
- 1:58reasons. First and foremost, he included
- 2:01an extremely inappropriate joke in his Netflix special, Matt
- 2:04Rife Natural Selection. He began the special with a
- 2:07misogynistic joke about a restaurant Hostess with a black
- 2:10eye alluding to domestic violence.
- 2:13To make matters worse, Matt later doubled down on this joke.
- 2:17Quote UN Quote. Instead of apologizing, he
- 2:19shared an Instagram story with a link to a website selling
- 2:22helmets to protect against seizures, head trauma and head
- 2:26banging. Second, he found himself at the
- 2:27center of controversy after Brooke Schofield exposed him for
- 2:30his behavior during their relationship.
- 2:32So Elf picking a controversial figure is already like not a
- 2:36good move, but picking Matt Rife specifically just feels so
- 2:41weird, especially as a beauty brand that would traditionally,
- 2:44you know, like cater to women, Like their largest customer base
- 2:49is women. And to choose someone who has
- 2:52been so misogynistic against women in his relationships, in
- 2:56his comedy, his career, like that is such a bizarre and off
- 3:00base choice. Also, what does Matt Rife have
- 3:03to do with makeup? Why would they choose him?
- 3:06I understand makeup is for everyone, but Matt Rife has no
- 3:09connection to makeup. We don't know anything about his
- 3:12like beauty routine. That's not like part of any type
- 3:15of his public persona. Like it is such a weird choice
- 3:20and pairing him with a drag queen like Heidi in Closet also
- 3:24feels very unnatural. So as noted by Georgia from the
- 3:27Please don't Make Me Focus Substack, she wrote quote
- 3:30pairing a fake edgy right wing IT boy Matt Rife with a drag
- 3:33queen. Heidi in Closet was certainly a
- 3:35choice and the wrong 1. Marketers love to assume that
- 3:38juxtaposition is inherently smart or subversive.
- 3:41I'm sure someone in the room said no one will expect this,
- 3:44but why? Who cares?
- 3:46At least with American Eagle and Sydney Sweeney, they were
- 3:49talking to a specific audience. Looking at the comments, I have
- 3:52no idea who this is for. If you're chasing right wing
- 3:56money, you lose them by including a drag queen.
- 3:58And the opposite is true too. So who is the market?
- 4:02That completely sums up my feelings on this.
- 4:05Who is this for? This is not some like, you know,
- 4:07crazy edgy, cool subversive type of like marketing strategy.
- 4:11It is off base. It is bizarre.
- 4:14And ELF, you know, they've been having a moment.
- 4:16Like people have really appreciated Elf's efforts over
- 4:19the last few years. They're kind of one of the
- 4:21darlings of the more affordable beauty community.
- 4:23And we know that Elf, the parent company, just bought Rd.
- 4:27Beauty. So to launch with this and, you
- 4:29know, get this kind of reception, I hope they listen.
- 4:32Like, I hope that they actually consider how this was a mistake.
- 4:37You can just see the intention behind it, which was like, let's
- 4:39put this really bizarre pairing together and everyone's going to
- 4:43think this was marketing genius and everyone's actually like,
- 4:47this is just kind of lazy and this was not well thought out.
- 4:51OK, the next story that I have for you guys, this is kind of
- 4:54insane. Also really upsetting.
- 4:56But I'm going to talk about Anna Delvy and the abandoned bunnies.
- 5:01So if you don't know who Anna Delvy is, she is a famous con
- 5:04artist who allegedly defrauded New York's elite.
- 5:08She pretended to be a German heiress to try and build the Ann
- 5:11Adelvi Foundation and also gain various opportunities from
- 5:14running in these circles. She served jail time and was
- 5:17initially released from prison at the beginning of 2021.
- 5:20Afterwards, she was taken into custody for overstaying her
- 5:23visa. She was released again in
- 5:25October 2022 under house arrest. Ann Adelvi's obviously the
- 5:29subject of the very popular Netflix series Inventing Anna.
- 5:32Definitely watch it if you guys have not.
- 5:35But she is a real person. She did these things since she
- 5:38was released. She's famously been on Dancing
- 5:40With the Stars and she also did a pretty iconic interview with Z
- 5:44Way. Anyways, Anna Delvy has found
- 5:45herself in controversy online after doing a photo shoot with
- 5:49some bunnies and then allegedly dumping these bunnies in a park.
- 5:54Basically, 2 bunnies were found in Prospect Park in Brooklyn.
- 5:57People online soon linked them to the bunnies.
- 6:00In Anna's Instagram posts, 3 bunnies have allegedly been
- 6:03found and linked to the photo shoot.
- 6:05This is how this happened. Web specialist and vegan Blogger
- 6:08Terry Chow went searching for the bunnies after seeing a post
- 6:11in a local Facebook group saying some bunnies were found in the
- 6:14park. Over the next few days, she came
- 6:16across multiple abandoned bunnies.
- 6:19After looking at Anna's pictures, people started putting
- 6:21two and two together. Social media users were quick to
- 6:24blame Anna for the bunnies, according to New York Magazine
- 6:27Quote. At first, Delvy was defensive.
- 6:29She claimed in a comment that the person who of course the
- 6:32bunnies had informed her that the animals were safe.
- 6:34But things became even more confusing when Terry Chow saw
- 6:37that Anna had tagged a hair stylist named Christian Batty
- 6:40and Post from the photo shoot. Terry told New York Magazine
- 6:43that she had received a message from the hair stylist in the
- 6:46lead up to the photo shoot. After scouting her rabbit quote,
- 6:49Batty offered her $100 to borrow the Bunny for the day, but Chow
- 6:52declined. But close reading the photos,
- 6:55Chow saw that Delvy had posted the same blanket and box they
- 6:58found in Prospect Park. Chow made the proof public in a
- 7:01thread on a edit page dedicated to Delvy.
- 7:03It has also been reported that Christian allegedly confessed to
- 7:06the allegations in a Facebook page called NYC Bunnies.
- 7:09Anna has since gone on to issue her own statement about the
- 7:12situation. She didn't really take any
- 7:14accountability for what transpired, which is like a not
- 7:17surprising at all if you know anything about Anna Delvy.
- 7:19But she also shared that she has donated to the Rescuers Chosen
- 7:23charity All About Rabbit's Rescue, she wrote.
- 7:26As many of you know, I recently did a photo shoot with Jasper
- 7:28Solov involving live rabbits. Christian Batty, a hair team
- 7:32member I briefly met during a Fashion Week event last year,
- 7:35claimed he had a friend who could lend us bunnies for a few
- 7:38hours. I later learned that instead of
- 7:40borrowing animals from a legitimate source as he stated,
- 7:43he had obtained them from Facebook Marketplace from
- 7:46someone looking to surrender them and planned to abandon them
- 7:49in Prospect Park. I had no knowledge of this until
- 7:52the afternoon of August 10th. She goes on to say she's very
- 7:55upset about this. All three rabbits were recovered
- 7:58in good health and place in new foster homes.
- 8:01I have donated $1000 to the Rescuers Chosen charity.
- 8:05She also went on to share screenshots of Christian Batty
- 8:07statement on the situation as well as screenshots of their
- 8:10text chain. One of the screenshots had text
- 8:12that read Christian Batty lied to us for days about returning
- 8:15the rabbit. Turns out his plan all along was
- 8:17to dump them. OK, so the response to Anna's
- 8:20post has been mixed. Some social media users are
- 8:23satisfied by her statement saying that she was pretty
- 8:25transparent. Other are upset that she didn't
- 8:28take any accountability and that she chose to use animals in the
- 8:31photo shoot in the 1st place. Am I surprised that Anna Delvy
- 8:34is involved in a scandal like this?
- 8:36No, I feel like Anna Delvy probably still doesn't surround
- 8:38herself with like the best people, OK or the best people
- 8:42probably don't want to necessarily be around Anna Delvy
- 8:44one or the other, but I like just I can't even imagine.
- 8:48I can't even imagine imagine just dumping an animal like that
- 8:52is I can't I can't even think about it.
- 8:55It makes me so upset. Like I mean that's what happened
- 8:58to my little doggy pumpkin, my little baby, my little 3 legged
- 9:01Chihuahua, you know, she was abandoned and I can't even
- 9:05think. I can't even think about it.
- 9:07It's so cruel and sick. Why would you not just take them
- 9:10to a shelter? Like, I don't understand, okay?
- 9:13The last word that I have for you guys is more like the
- 9:17marketing kind of industry realm.
- 9:19But I came across an article talking about how men are using
- 9:23Reddit to shop and I thought this was interesting.
- 9:26You know, I avoid the topic of men as much as I can.
- 9:29Okay, but this is a really interesting story.
- 9:33So the piece was published by Vogue Business and explores why
- 9:36men are using subreddits to quote, discover, discuss, and
- 9:39decide on fashion. Obviously when we think about
- 9:41men using Reddit, it is not for fashion.
- 9:44Like that is honestly the last thing that comes to mind.
- 9:47So I do think turning to Reddit for fashion advice is a lot more
- 9:51wholesome than I think what most men are using the platform for.
- 9:55So two of the most popular subreddits in this niche are R
- 9:57slash Male Fashion Advice and R/BIG male fashion advice.
- 10:02We know that especially with the rise of AI, it's becoming
- 10:05increasingly difficult to Google search and just like search in
- 10:10general for information that you're looking for.
- 10:13So we know that because of that, people are turning to Reddit for
- 10:15advice and inspiration a lot of the time.
- 10:18So I guess this is just another consequence of that.
- 10:20As the founder of communications and creative firm Nobo Agency
- 10:24tells the Journalist quote, Reddit plays a growing role in
- 10:27how customers do their research. It's where they validate drops,
- 10:31check resale value, or just find out if something is worth
- 10:33copying. And obviously a huge part of
- 10:35Reddit's benefit is that it's discourse based.
- 10:38So there's just more room to talk about a product, give like
- 10:42valid reviews, even talk about like the cultural context of a
- 10:47brand or an item of clothing. Now, there is something to be
- 10:50said about the anonymity of Reddit.
- 10:53Talking about fashion and clothing can sometimes be
- 10:55embarrassing. And as Amy Fancom notes for the
- 10:58publication quote, it's judgement free space to seek
- 11:01advice, swap tips and explore interests.
- 11:04And along the way, many also end up diving into style and fashion
- 11:08discussions. Yeah, I think a lot of men were
- 11:10probably not raised to think very much about their style and
- 11:13their appearance in that way. I think fashion is typically
- 11:16considered like a girly category.
- 11:19And so they maybe get to adulthood.
- 11:21They do have an interest in dressing themselves well, and
- 11:24they maybe don't even know where to start.
- 11:25So like going to somewhere like Reddit and having that community
- 11:28and also it being able to remain anonymous, probably like pretty
- 11:32powerful for a lot of people. Now there's definitely
- 11:34opportunity for brands to get involved with this.
- 11:37Reddit is 1 platform that brands haven't really managed to crack
- 11:41yet or like really invest a lot of time and money into.
- 11:44But in the article, they do mention one successful example,
- 11:48Adidas to promote one of their shoes.
- 11:50Adidas took over certain communities for an Ask me
- 11:53anything with Steven Scholten, global director of footwear at
- 11:56Adidas quote. This activation showcased the
- 11:59design and construction of the new shoe, highlighting its
- 12:02innovative materials and performance benefits.
- 12:04By tapping into Redditors preference for substance over
- 12:07hype, the campaign resonated with both sneaker enthusiasts
- 12:10and performance driven athletes. Reddit is like one of the main
- 12:15places that we get information for our brand.
- 12:18We always get asked like how do you find stories?
- 12:21Where do you look? First of all, we've just trained
- 12:24our algorithms. Like I know if I scroll on
- 12:26TikTok for a certain amount of time, my algorithm, she won't
- 12:29fail me. She will delay deliver me the
- 12:31stories that I need. But beyond that, Reddit is like
- 12:34one of the first places that we will look every single day as
- 12:37well. All right, guys, that's it for
- 12:38mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 12:40I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
- 12:42and subscribe. And I will talk to you guys
- 12:45tomorrow for a Friday mini scroll.
- 12:48Bye.
