- 2:48Speaker 4: But yeah number one and number three.
- 2:50Speaker 8: Yeah yeah yeah, no, God is good.
- 3:03Speaker 3: I'm grateful because it was a time when I wasn't
- 3:05Speaker 3: making money.
- 3:06Speaker 6: So I want to start there because I feel like
- 3:08Speaker 6: people need to hear the story because our audience are
- 3:11Speaker 6: is just a wide variety and yeah.
- 3:14Speaker 5: They're super nosy.
- 3:17Speaker 6: So who is Crystal Renee? Where is she?
- 3:19Speaker 4: Where are you from?
- 3:19Speaker 3: I'm originally from Martin, Tennessee.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Martin Tennessee where exactly it is in the far northwest
- 3:27Speaker 2: corner of Tennessee close to Kentucky.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Like my town is like ten minutes from Kentucky.
- 3:32Speaker 5: Wow.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Yeah yeah.
- 3:34Speaker 2: So I lived there all my life and then moved
- 3:36Speaker 2: to Washington, D C.
- 3:37Speaker 3: After college.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Actually, like the young lady, she's interning, I interned on
- 3:42Speaker 2: Capitol Hill and ended up getting a job.
- 3:45Speaker 3: So I moved to Washington, D C. And that's where
- 3:47Speaker 3: I really found myself. Huge culture shock.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Where I'm from, it's a lot of Caucasian people you know,
- 3:54Speaker 2: DC is Chocolate City.
- 3:55Speaker 3: It's a lot of us And I was, yeah.
- 3:56Speaker 5: Wow, I was, I like, that's DJ. Now what age
- 4:05Speaker 5: are you when you go to.
- 4:06Speaker 3: D C at that age? I was twenty two.
- 4:09Speaker 7: No, don't skip, don't skip. We will live on to
- 4:12Speaker 7: Martin Tennessee.
- 4:13Speaker 6: Where growing up in Martin Tennessee, what was that like?
- 4:18Speaker 3: Oh my goodness, it's a real town. We didn't have
- 4:20Speaker 3: a mall. All we had was a Walmart at the time.
- 4:22Speaker 3: We didn't have Super Walmart.
- 4:24Speaker 6: We had to drive like it is the difference between
- 4:26Speaker 6: Walmart Supermar, you know that, what's what's the difference?
- 4:29Speaker 5: Super Walmart got the grocery, you.
- 4:32Speaker 6: Know, super you can go get your eggs, Yeah, you
- 4:37Speaker 6: get some closed.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Yeah. We had to go to E. W.
- 4:39Speaker 2: James to get the groceries. I actually used to work there.
- 4:42Speaker 3: And then then we had to go to Walmart to
- 4:44Speaker 3: get like everything else.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I guess I didn't know that because I'm from Arkansas
- 4:48Speaker 1: and Walmart originated in Arkansas. So it's like you can
- 4:51Speaker 1: get closed and grocery and my gun.
- 4:53Speaker 6: Yeah that's a super Walmart because super Center, but you
- 4:57Speaker 6: know its it on.
- 4:59Speaker 1: That But you know in in Arkansas, he's gonna be
- 5:04Speaker 1: in the majority.
- 5:05Speaker 6: It's all super Walmarts now yeah, even think it's like.
- 5:09Speaker 5: Because before it's just to be Walmart.
- 5:11Speaker 6: It's no groceries anyway.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Yeah, no, that's real.
- 5:14Speaker 2: So we had to drive like two hours to Memphis,
- 5:17Speaker 2: which is really close.
- 5:18Speaker 3: What part of the Arkans are you from? Oh yeah,
- 5:20Speaker 3: so not par at all. So we had to drive
- 5:22Speaker 3: to Memphis to go shopping.
- 5:23Speaker 2: If I needed like real back to school clothes and
- 5:25Speaker 2: I needed my fly stuff, I would drive to Memphis
- 5:28Speaker 2: draw two hours.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Damn to go to get some clothes.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Yes, yes, especially if I wanted the good. No, it
- 5:35Speaker 2: was no Timey Hill figure. The closest one was Jackson's.
- 5:42Speaker 5: In that chair remember no no, no, no, no, Yeahboddy no.
- 5:50Speaker 3: So yeah, it was a place that I always attribute to.
- 5:54Speaker 2: There was not a lot to do, so it gave
- 5:57Speaker 2: me the room to dream as big as I wanted to.
- 6:00Speaker 2: It wasn't a lot of distractions in Martin, so.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Very family oriented.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Every like it wouldn't know, like sneaking and doing something
- 6:07Speaker 2: because somebody before.
- 6:10Speaker 3: By the time you wake up, Smiken called and told them, yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I saw Christal and give me city at the basketball court.
- 6:15Speaker 2: W everybody knows everybody.
- 6:19Speaker 3: So it's one of those towns.
- 6:21Speaker 6: So I'm pretty sure when you move to d C,
- 6:25Speaker 6: that's a culture shock.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Huge culture shock. Like where we're from.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Like when you drive past somebody in the other the
- 6:30Speaker 2: other lane, you wave yeah yeah, and even if you
- 6:33Speaker 2: can't see who it is, your hand just goes up.
- 6:35Speaker 2: It's a gestion that we do. So even in the morning,
- 6:38Speaker 2: I would say good morning to people on the sidewalk
- 6:40Speaker 2: and they look at me like, like, why is she
- 6:43Speaker 2: this girl talking to me?
- 6:44Speaker 3: I was like, oh, so they don't speak okay, So
- 6:47Speaker 3: I learned real quick. Every completely different.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I learned, like you just mind your business, stay focused,
- 6:52Speaker 2: keep your head down. And I feel like that's where
- 6:54Speaker 2: I really learned, just how to one stay in my
- 6:57Speaker 2: lane and just focus on what I was focused on.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Yeah that's fine, but I feel like you kind of
- 7:02Speaker 4: carried the personality of Martin into d C. And that's
- 7:06Speaker 4: where your flavor comes from. Where I'm like, your energy,
- 7:08Speaker 4: your energy, your energy is that small town man. It's
- 7:11Speaker 4: just it's an experience that you can't get from nothing else.
- 7:14Speaker 3: No for sure where you're from.
- 7:15Speaker 4: I'm from Wisconsin, small town. So when you talk about
- 7:19Speaker 4: when I went to school and I went to New
- 7:20Speaker 4: York and like the first time I ever walked downtown
- 7:22Speaker 4: and they stepped on my shoes. I'm like, how does
- 7:25Speaker 4: keep going? Yeah, at least to say part of me
- 7:28Speaker 4: or something. But that same experience though, just like where
- 7:33Speaker 4: it teaches you to be lady focused. But I feel
- 7:35Speaker 4: like having the grounding of the small town it kind
- 7:38Speaker 4: of haves you like centered.
- 7:39Speaker 3: It does it. It's kept me that way my entire life.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Yeah, it's felt, it felt.
- 7:45Speaker 1: You giving that And in d C, they they probably
- 7:48Speaker 1: locked in because it's a lot of successful black people,
- 7:51Speaker 1: a lot of lawyers and doctors and you know people
- 7:54Speaker 1: in the politically.
- 7:55Speaker 6: That's where the highest amount, yes, of black successful wealth is.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Yeah, wealths in d.
- 8:04Speaker 3: The city.
- 8:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 8:05Speaker 6: Sure. So when did the acting bug hit you?
- 8:09Speaker 3: It hit me when I was a kid.
- 8:10Speaker 2: It's one of those things, you know, life just has
- 8:12Speaker 2: a funny way of taking on these different journeys. I
- 8:15Speaker 2: knew since I was five that I wanted to act
- 8:16Speaker 2: and sing.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Really yeah, that's good.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Yeah, my mom put me in the choir. Yeah, it
- 8:23Speaker 2: was Janna Jackson. It was like control that during that time.
- 8:27Speaker 2: It was something about seeing her do this thing.
- 8:30Speaker 6: She did, and yeah, she did.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Everything, and I was like, I like her and I
- 8:34Speaker 2: identified for some odd reason, even though I didn't see
- 8:37Speaker 2: it around me, I identified with her through the TV
- 8:39Speaker 2: screen and it was in that moment that I knew
- 8:43Speaker 2: that was what I want. I want to do that
- 8:45Speaker 2: that thing that she's doing, and it's something that stayed
- 8:47Speaker 2: with me.
- 8:48Speaker 3: But life took me in so many different journeys.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I had a political science teacher and he's the one
- 8:53Speaker 2: who had me write an essay to our state senator
- 8:56Speaker 2: in d C. Lamar Alexander at the time for an internship.
- 8:59Speaker 2: So out of all the college students who wrote, only three.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Of us got to go. And I was one of
- 9:03Speaker 3: the three that got chosen for that semester you went three. Yes,
- 9:09Speaker 3: it was confirmation.
- 9:10Speaker 2: And then even more of confirmation was a year later
- 9:12Speaker 2: when I got the call for a job. So I
- 9:13Speaker 2: was like, I did something right and I moved to
- 9:16Speaker 2: DC and it was just one of those things where
- 9:19Speaker 2: I was like, I just kept following, like what my
- 9:21Speaker 2: parents said, make sure you have get your education, get
- 9:23Speaker 2: a degree, get a good job, get your four o
- 9:25Speaker 2: one K your benefits. But as I sat there and
- 9:28Speaker 2: I saw myself like just not enjoying work, and I
- 9:31Speaker 2: was like, there's something more. And that little that see
- 9:35Speaker 2: that was playing as a little girl started to sprout
- 9:37Speaker 2: and I was like, man, all my friends are in
- 9:39Speaker 2: Atlanta thriving, Like I see so many people doing their
- 9:41Speaker 2: thing in the arts and entertainment business. TV and film
- 9:45Speaker 2: was taken off here around that time. It was like
- 9:46Speaker 2: two thousand and nine, so Will Packard then were down
- 9:49Speaker 2: here doing their thing. I sawt Tyler was doing his thing,
- 9:52Speaker 2: and something said just go for it. So I literally
- 9:54Speaker 2: called my mom and I said, hey, Mom, I'm moving
- 9:56Speaker 2: to Atlanta. My uncle Tyrone's gonna let me stay in
- 9:57Speaker 2: his spare bedroom until I get my feet on the ground.
- 10:00Speaker 3: And she said, okay, we'll pray about it.
- 10:02Speaker 2: I already have our Volkswagen Jedda packed to the brown,
- 10:05Speaker 2: put everything else in a cube and had it shift
- 10:07Speaker 2: and I was driving to Atlanta and the rest was
- 10:10Speaker 2: literally history.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Damn this small town like transition, that first scary transition
- 10:16Speaker 4: you had going from you know, Martin to Chocolate City,
- 10:19Speaker 4: Like do you feel like that created like that driving
- 10:23Speaker 4: you to where it's like I'm not scared.
- 10:25Speaker 2: To take a rest exactly yes, I feel like when
- 10:27Speaker 2: you jump off the porch, as they say, and really
- 10:30Speaker 2: go for it. I was like, if I can make it
- 10:32Speaker 2: in DC, I definitely can go make it anywhere, like a.
- 10:35Speaker 5: Little bit, a little bit more friendlier in Atlanta.
- 10:38Speaker 6: Absolutely, drivers are a lot more crazier.
- 10:41Speaker 5: I think.
- 10:41Speaker 6: I think Atlanta has the worst traffic.
- 10:42Speaker 2: It's so bad even now, Like I felt like DC
- 10:45Speaker 2: had bad traffic.
- 10:46Speaker 3: I got to Atlanta during that time.
- 10:48Speaker 2: It was cool, like you can know, like around ten
- 10:49Speaker 2: o'clock the roads be clear, like there was pockets when
- 10:52Speaker 2: it's going to be clear now.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Everybody they was like they living like that down there.
- 11:00Speaker 1: We're going to Atlanta, and don't it don't help that,
- 11:03Speaker 1: you know, when it rains in Atlanta. That's what I'm
- 11:05Speaker 1: scared because I know for sure people can't drive. That's why.
- 11:10Speaker 1: You know, if you ever get into a car wreck,
- 11:11Speaker 1: make sure you call.
- 11:13Speaker 5: Gap there you go. But yeah, people can't drive in Atlanta.
- 11:17Speaker 5: Like I don't know what it is.
- 11:19Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 11:20Speaker 1: It's because half the people, you know, some of the
- 11:23Speaker 1: cars probably hot day and you know what I'm talking about,
- 11:25Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying.
- 11:26Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 11:31Speaker 6: Now Crystal. How much of yourselver are in the characters
- 11:34Speaker 6: that you play.
- 11:35Speaker 3: There is a little bit of Crystal in every character.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I think for any actor, you have to pull from
- 11:41Speaker 2: real life circumstances experiences to make it authentic, but also
- 11:46Speaker 2: becoming the character. You know, a lot of times when
- 11:48Speaker 2: we take on a role, we do a character breakdown
- 11:52Speaker 2: where we become the character. So I had to become Fatima.
- 11:55Speaker 2: In the beginning, I was literally judging everything. Tyler bro
- 11:58Speaker 2: I'm like, she wouldn't she would never do that? And
- 12:01Speaker 2: deval Ellis, my castmates, said no, you would never do that.
- 12:04Speaker 3: There is a Fatima out.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Here in the world that we did, and it's so
- 12:08Speaker 2: many women. Every time I lead a house like girl,
- 12:10Speaker 2: you are just like me. I'm like you crazy.
- 12:14Speaker 6: I always wanted to ask an actress or actor this Sometimes,
- 12:19Speaker 6: do you feel like you're in character and you forget
- 12:22Speaker 6: in real life?
- 12:23Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 12:23Speaker 6: So let's just say you go out and you're in
- 12:26Speaker 6: currently shooting and you have to be psychologically that character.
- 12:30Speaker 5: You could go to reds of food.
- 12:33Speaker 6: Do you feel like maybe you forget that you're still
- 12:35Speaker 6: in character?
- 12:36Speaker 3: Not for Fatima, not now.
- 12:38Speaker 2: In the beginning, because I was learning the way Tyler
- 12:42Speaker 2: shoots and how you have to kind of slow down
- 12:44Speaker 2: and drag things out and take beats.
- 12:46Speaker 3: It's not like how we're having a conversation.
- 12:48Speaker 2: We're not taking these long dramatic pauses because what I
- 12:53Speaker 2: really want to say. And I would talk like that outside,
- 12:58Speaker 2: I'm like, oh my gosh, talking like.
- 13:02Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm saying like we would. Yeah.
- 13:03Speaker 2: I would start talking like I would talk like her,
- 13:05Speaker 2: and it would take me about a week or so
- 13:07Speaker 2: to get out of that.
- 13:08Speaker 1: The way we shoot, so you would be talking like
- 13:11Speaker 1: and taking back you're actually filming and take
