Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: It's podcast.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 0:13Speaker 2: conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today
- 0:17Speaker 2: we're joined by Brody Henderson, Chester, Floyd Randall, Williams, Christine Siwiki,
- 0:22Speaker 2: Logan Dove, Hillary Burn, and Ben Long. Ben is a
- 0:26Speaker 2: freelance writer who contributes articles to the medeater dot com. Ben,
- 0:31Speaker 2: how do you think you're going to do in Meat
- 0:32Speaker 2: Eater Trivia?
- 0:34Speaker 3: What you say they got?
- 0:34Speaker 4: What?
- 0:35Speaker 3: Four verticals?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Four verticals?
- 0:36Speaker 1: That's right?
- 0:37Speaker 3: I think I got two verticals and two horizontals.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Okay, tell us about those?
- 0:40Speaker 3: Well, I think I'm going to do okay on hunting
- 0:43Speaker 3: and conservation because that's where I spend most of my time.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I think fishing, unless they are fishing questions about northwestern
- 0:49Speaker 3: Montana kind of bloat chunks there. And cooking. I'm kind
- 0:53Speaker 3: of a salt pepper, medium rare kind of guy, and
- 0:56Speaker 3: that's kind of the end of it. So I'll guess.
- 0:58Speaker 2: It's gonna need to be a little better than that
- 1:00Speaker 2: for cooking to get these right today. Now, you had
- 1:03Speaker 2: told me in an email that your filing system is strong,
- 1:07Speaker 2: but your but your retrieval system is old. And tethered.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Explain what that means?
- 1:12Speaker 3: Well, you know, like Steve says that age has an advantage, right,
- 1:15Speaker 3: she had more time to soak up trivia. And I've
- 1:17Speaker 3: been told I have a very trivial mind, so that helps.
- 1:20Speaker 3: But the downside is that you get past a certain
- 1:23Speaker 3: age and it's harder to pull those you know, neurons
- 1:26Speaker 3: out of your head. So we'll see where it goes.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You've forgotten more than a young guy like Chester has
- 1:30Speaker 2: ever learned.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I'm sure I forgotten more than Chester.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Now, you just had You just had a book come
- 1:37Speaker 2: out earlier this year called Hunter and Angler Field Guide
- 1:40Speaker 2: to Raising Hell, tell folks what that book is about.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Thanks for the opportunity. Yeah, it's a it's basically a
- 1:47Speaker 3: primer on how to be a more effective conservationist. A
- 1:49Speaker 3: lot of my work is worth conservation groups, and it
- 1:52Speaker 3: basically is some of my experiences and my ways of
- 1:56Speaker 3: going about helping groups, helping conservationists, you know, achieve their goals,
- 2:00Speaker 3: whether it's policies protecting habitat, increasing access, are protecting the land,
- 2:05Speaker 3: that kind of thing. So it's kind of just a
- 2:07Speaker 3: real simple, effective way of getting things done.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Tony Binham who has contributed some photography to med
- 2:15Speaker 2: Eater projects, He had said a similar thing to you.
- 2:18Speaker 2: He said, this book will make you a more effective conservationist,
- 2:22Speaker 2: which we love here at med Eater Trivia. Now this
- 2:24Speaker 2: is a ten round quiz show with questions from meat
- 2:26Speaker 2: Eater's four verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking,
- 2:30Speaker 2: and there is a prize. Med Eater will donate five
- 2:32Speaker 2: hundred dollars to the conservation organization of the winners, choosing
- 2:36Speaker 2: for the stat of the week. This week we're looking
- 2:38Speaker 2: at how meat Eater Trivia, the board game is so
- 2:41Speaker 2: hunter and angler friendly. Here's what I mean. The game
- 2:45Speaker 2: comes with a small tin carrying case that's meant to
- 2:48Speaker 2: fit in your glovebox, kayak, backpack, or wherever. You could
- 2:52Speaker 2: keep all the whiteboards, markers and one hundred questions in
- 2:56Speaker 2: the ten carrying case and it'll weigh less than eight ounces.
- 3:00Speaker 2: If you're even more weight conscious than that, you could
- 3:02Speaker 2: ditch the carrying case and hold everything together with rubber
- 3:05Speaker 2: bands and you're at less than five ounces. If that's
- 3:08Speaker 2: still too heavy, then only take one hundred questions, which
- 3:11Speaker 2: comes to at less which comes in at less than
- 3:15Speaker 2: three ounces. How does that compare to other board games? Well,
- 3:18Speaker 2: I weighed some this morning and here's what I learned.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Risk weighs three pounds, Life weighs two and a half pounds,
- 3:24Speaker 2: and Monopoly weighs two pounds. Even a standard deck of
- 3:27Speaker 2: fifty two playing cards weighs four ounces, which is twenty
- 3:31Speaker 2: five percent heavier than one hundred questions for Meat Eater Trivia.
- 3:35Speaker 2: So I'm declaring this the most backpacking friendly board game
- 3:39Speaker 2: on the market. Media or Trivia, the only board game
- 3:42Speaker 2: or Conservation always wins, comes out this fall.
- 3:45Speaker 5: Hey, I've got a question for you, Spencer.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Do you got Chester?
- 3:49Speaker 5: Are you guys gonna re up those questions after like
- 3:53Speaker 5: a couple of years. Here's my probot with a new.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Deck in twenty twenty three. We will have the board
- 4:00Speaker 2: game comes for sale this fall twenty twenty four. You're
- 4:03Speaker 2: going to be getting expansion packs.
- 4:05Speaker 1: They could be maybe a.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Specific genre, maybe there for kids or white tails or
- 4:10Speaker 2: mountain men that is TBD, or maybe they're just more
- 4:13Speaker 2: questions from our four verticals. Nice, that's that's what we're
- 4:17Speaker 2: looking at. Brody, Do you take any games with you
- 4:20Speaker 2: in the back country as a deck of cards?
- 4:22Speaker 1: Ever? Made it into your backpack.
- 4:24Speaker 6: No, yeah, I can't remember ever doing that. But you know,
- 4:29Speaker 6: like if I was hount with my kid, like books
- 4:32Speaker 6: make an appearance.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Those cars more than this game, I bet.
- 4:36Speaker 6: But no, no, generally try not to have that kind
- 4:40Speaker 6: of downtime.
- 4:40Speaker 5: You know.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Here's our zero percenter question of the week, which tests
- 4:45Speaker 2: how much knowledge players have retained from previous games. This
- 4:48Speaker 2: question was from episode to eighty seven. The topic was fishing,
- 4:51Speaker 2: and nobody got it right. If you know the answer,
- 4:54Speaker 2: you can just shout it out. What do you call
- 4:56Speaker 2: the hybrid fish that's created by a largemouth pass and smallmouth.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Bass A mean mouth? You got it, Brody, you didn't
- 5:03Speaker 1: get at the time because.
- 5:05Speaker 5: I remember.
- 5:07Speaker 6: Back then you were like all excited about this mean
- 5:10Speaker 6: mouth world record, which worship because it's just some artificial
- 5:14Speaker 6: thing that's made.
- 5:16Speaker 4: You know. It's like, yeah, is this mean as an
- 5:18Speaker 4: angry or mean as an average?
- 5:20Speaker 2: So that's it. That's a great question. The name was
- 5:23Speaker 2: given to them because some biologists had a broodstock pond
- 5:27Speaker 2: of meanmouth bass that he saw attack a dog that
- 5:30Speaker 2: was swimming in the pond. They're known to be more
- 5:33Speaker 2: aggressive than a large mouth and small mouth so mean
- 5:37Speaker 2: as an angry kill your dog, average man.
- 5:41Speaker 5: Sounds like they'd be fun to catch.
- 5:43Speaker 2: You have to find some chester to tangle with. We
- 5:47Speaker 2: have some housekeeping to get to. Daniel Brickey wrote in
- 5:49Speaker 2: with a golf term that he believes should be added
- 5:52Speaker 2: to the meat Eater trivia lexicon. Here's what he means.
- 5:56Speaker 2: The word dormy refers to when a match play golfer
- 6:00Speaker 2: is winning by the same number of holes that are left.
- 6:03Speaker 2: So if a golfer is up three with three holes
- 6:05Speaker 2: to go, then they are dormy. This term is derived
- 6:09Speaker 2: from a French word that means to sleep, implying that
- 6:11Speaker 2: the player who is dormy can relax. So how does
- 6:15Speaker 2: that apply to media to trivia? Well, for example, Randall
- 6:18Speaker 2: is winning by one point with one question to go,
- 6:22Speaker 2: then he is dormy. The term is a compliment, affirming
- 6:25Speaker 2: that the player is winning, but also puts extreme pressure
- 6:28Speaker 2: on them to not choke. So going forward, we'll try
- 6:31Speaker 2: to call out when a player is dormy to see
- 6:33Speaker 2: how clutch they really.
- 6:34Speaker 6: I think you're gonna run in trouble with that.
- 6:36Speaker 1: What do you what do you think we're gonna learn?
- 6:38Speaker 6: I think there'll be some individuals other than myself that
- 6:42Speaker 6: are uncomfortable with like that.
- 6:44Speaker 5: Golf comparison pretty dormant when it comes to try.
- 6:50Speaker 3: I remember my grandpa when we played cribbage and if
- 6:52Speaker 3: you if you lost with your hole at the end
- 6:53Speaker 3: of the peg, last peg, you call it dian in
- 6:55Speaker 3: the stink hole. So maybe that could be one.
- 6:59Speaker 4: And that's what feels like.
- 7:02Speaker 3: I'm familiar with that.
- 7:03Speaker 2: You know, Randall has been in that stinkhole. Now, come
- 7:08Speaker 2: out of your funk yet, what.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Happened lying awake last night thinking about it?
- 7:12Speaker 6: It's the cold, sweat all night long, brutal.
- 7:15Speaker 2: See if we can turn it around today. Now, the
- 7:17Speaker 2: Shelby index for today's round is a three and a half,
- 7:20Speaker 2: so our winner should get seven correct answers. And with
- 7:24Speaker 2: that we're onto the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Look, I need to know what I stand to win everything?
- 7:34Speaker 1: How's that? Just tend to win everything?
- 7:44Speaker 7: Game?
- 7:44Speaker 2: On Suckers Question one, the topic is hunting. This first
- 7:49Speaker 2: great question comes to his fia Jessica Tracy. If you
- 7:52Speaker 2: have a question you think is right for med Eater Trivia,
- 7:55Speaker 2: you can send it to trivia at the Medeater dot com.
- 7:58Speaker 2: The plot hound is the official dog breed of this state?
- 8:04Speaker 2: Is it Oklahoma, North Carolina, Alabama, or Ohio?
- 8:10Speaker 5: Man, Randally, you knew that one.
- 8:11Speaker 4: I don't think. I don't think I do. I just
- 8:14Speaker 4: have a feeling.
- 8:15Speaker 2: The topic is hunting. The plot hoound is the official
- 8:19Speaker 2: dog breed of this state. Your four choices are Oklahoma,
- 8:24Speaker 2: North Carolina, Alabama, or Ohio. Brody, are you as confident
- 8:31Speaker 2: as Randall?
- 8:33Speaker 6: Randall said he wasn't call again.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Yeah, let me reiterate.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Question, just making snap judgments. Okay, Ben, how do you
- 8:43Speaker 2: feel about your answer here?
- 8:44Speaker 4: Fifty fifty?
- 8:46Speaker 2: This is in one of the verticals you declared, is
- 8:50Speaker 2: a vertical of yours.
- 8:51Speaker 6: I'm pretty sure I've heard.
- 8:52Speaker 2: We'll see how you do. The plot hoound is the
- 8:54Speaker 2: official dog breed of this state. Oklahoma, North Carolina, Alabama, Ohio.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 9:05Speaker 2: We have been saying North Carolina, Hillary saying North Carolina. Chester,
- 9:10Speaker 2: you're saying North Carolina, Randall saying North Carolina, Logan saying Alabama,
- 9:15Speaker 2: Christine saying Oklahoma. Brody's saying North Carolina. The correct answer
- 9:21Speaker 2: is North Carolina. The room.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Very well, I've got a question.
- 9:25Speaker 2: What do you got.
- 9:26Speaker 6: I feel like when I've heard about this dog breed,
- 9:30Speaker 6: it's Carolina plot hound. But I could be wrong. I
- 9:36Speaker 6: don't remember ever hearing North Carolina plot I remember hearing
- 9:39Speaker 6: Carolina plot.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Well, but what I mean by official dog breed? Like
- 9:43Speaker 2: it is a state like this? What's the state fish
- 9:46Speaker 2: in Montana? Yellowstone cutthroat or something like that?
- 9:50Speaker 1: Throat?
- 9:50Speaker 2: Okay, this this would be the official that should have
- 9:53Speaker 2: been a question of North Carolina.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I was gonna say averse that has it as
- 10:01Speaker 4: a mascot.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Maybe I think that the University of Tennessee has a
- 10:06Speaker 2: coon dog on their sidelines, but I think that might
- 10:08Speaker 2: be a bluetick. I nomina have corrections the issue in
- 10:12Speaker 2: the future over this now. North Carolina designated the plot
- 10:16Speaker 2: hoound as their official state dog breed in nineteen eighty nine.
- 10:20Speaker 2: It wasn't until two thousand and six when the American
- 10:22Speaker 2: Kennel Club recognized them as a breed, and it wasn't
- 10:25Speaker 2: until two thousand and eight when the plot Hoound competed
- 10:28Speaker 2: in the Westminster Dog Show. Of the seven recognized coonhounds,
- 10:32Speaker 2: they're the only one that didn't descend from a foxhound.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Question two, the topic is cooking. Merriam Webster defines this
- 10:42Speaker 2: dish as quote a spread of finely chopped or perade
- 10:48Speaker 2: seasoned meat. This is the Merriam Webster definition. Come and
- 10:55Speaker 2: it is quote a spread of finely chop or perade
- 11:01Speaker 2: seasoned meat. The room is not confident, Logan, do you
- 11:09Speaker 2: have an answer?
- 11:10Speaker 1: It's I think so okay? You think you have it right?
- 11:16Speaker 2: Merriam Webster defines this dish as quote a spread of
- 11:19Speaker 2: finely chopped You.
- 11:20Speaker 6: Got to stop talking.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Seasoned meat. Brody would like some silence. Is anybody confident
- 11:30Speaker 2: in their answer?
- 11:32Speaker 1: The room is.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Merriam Webster defines.
- 11:39Speaker 6: This dim I'm torn torn.
- 11:41Speaker 2: A spread of finely chopped or purade seasoned meat. How
- 11:47Speaker 2: many answers are you torn between?
- 11:49Speaker 1: Brody?
- 11:51Speaker 2: You think one of them is definitely right? It is
- 11:57Speaker 2: everybody who's going to come up with an answer? Have
- 12:00Speaker 2: an answer for a spread of finely chopped or perade
- 12:04Speaker 2: seasoned meat. Christine, Oh, so you ready?
- 12:12Speaker 3: I'm as ready as I will ever be. I would
- 12:13Speaker 3: say that as a first time player. The TikTok in
- 12:17Speaker 3: the headphones is like so loud.
- 12:20Speaker 2: And is it is it helping or hurting your your ability?
- 12:24Speaker 3: It's not helping.
- 12:26Speaker 6: Just play without your headphones.
- 12:28Speaker 2: That it's like steroids. It's everybody ready, go ahead and
- 12:35Speaker 2: reveal your answers. We have Ben saying liverwurst, Hillary saying tartar.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Chest You're saying Pat, Randall saying Pat, Logan saying tartar,
- 12:48Speaker 2: Christine saying minced meat. Brody's saying tartar. He crossed out Pat.
- 12:54Speaker 2: We have a correct answer in the room. It's Pat.
- 12:58Speaker 7: Damn it.
- 12:59Speaker 2: A few folks got it right. This is how Steve
- 13:03Speaker 2: Ranella described the appetizer quote. Wild game patae is a
- 13:07Speaker 2: fancy dish that turned small odds and ends of meat
- 13:10Speaker 2: into pure gold. It's the perfect thing to make as
- 13:13Speaker 2: a sophisticated first course when you're hosting a SWANKI you
- 13:17Speaker 2: get together to get his recipe, go to the mediater
- 13:19Speaker 2: dot com and type in wild game petae.
- 13:23Speaker 6: I thought it was only made out of liver.
- 13:26Speaker 2: So close I would.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Say that the liver worst is a example.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Perhaps we're going for the question of tartar definition.
- 13:35Speaker 4: I wrote down pete immediately and then spent the rest
- 13:37Speaker 4: of the time trying to think of tartar.
- 13:40Speaker 2: I will find you the definition of tartar while we're
- 13:43Speaker 2: waiting for you to answer question three. The topic is gear.
- 13:47Speaker 2: This next great question comes to as via Titus mckenti.
- 13:50Speaker 2: If you have a question you think is right for
- 13:52Speaker 2: Meat Eater Trivia, you can send it to trivia at
- 13:54Speaker 2: the medeater dot com. In optics lingo, the acronym s
- 14:00Speaker 2: f P stands for second blank blank. You need to
- 14:06Speaker 2: tell me the last two words of the acronym s
- 14:10Speaker 2: f P. And this is in the world of optics. Brody,
- 14:18Speaker 2: do some filibustering for me while I look up the
- 14:20Speaker 2: definition of tartar. What do you got Forrest Brody?
- 14:26Speaker 6: I don't have anything Like I thought pat ta was
- 14:29Speaker 6: like something that was made out of liver, and that
- 14:32Speaker 6: question said meat. This is why I put tartar, which
- 14:36Speaker 6: is like finally chopped in seasoned meat.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I'm gonna third that. I was gonna say it was
- 14:44Speaker 3: a spread or puree, but that was in the question,
- 14:46Speaker 3: so it couldn't be that.
- 14:47Speaker 6: But I'm not gonna be this cal thing where I'm
- 14:49Speaker 6: arguing five questions later.
- 14:51Speaker 7: Here here is.
- 14:52Speaker 4: The Merriam webs you did ask him to fill time.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Here is the Merriam Webster definition of tartar highly seasoned
- 15:00Speaker 2: ground meat eaten raw.
- 15:03Speaker 1: It's that definition is.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Fifty different than the one that we had for PATA.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Now here's the question for three again. In optics lingo,
- 15:12Speaker 2: the acronym SFP stands for second blank blank.
- 15:19Speaker 6: Was that Steve's question or he just weighed.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Out it was not. That was something he wrote on
- 15:25Speaker 2: the website for his rest a pat.
- 15:28Speaker 5: A though just seems more spreadable.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Yeah, that's kind of what I was.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Yeah, the word spread was in the definition.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I'll read it for you again.
- 15:37Speaker 2: I remember period is a spread of finely chopped or
- 15:41Speaker 2: perade seasoned meat. Is everybody ready to show their answers
- 15:45Speaker 2: for question three? Second blank blank? Go ahead and reveal
- 15:50Speaker 2: your answers. We have Ben saying focal point, Hillary saying
- 15:54Speaker 2: focal point, Chester's saying second focal point, Randall's saying full plane,
- 16:01Speaker 2: Logan saying focal plane, Christine saying faraway point, Brody's saying
- 16:07Speaker 2: focal point. The correct answer is focal plane, which rifle
- 16:14Speaker 2: got right. Scopes can either be FFP, which is first
- 16:21Speaker 2: focal plane, or SFP, which is second focal plane. These
- 16:26Speaker 2: terms refer to the placement of a scopes radical. To
- 16:29Speaker 2: learn which one is right for you, go to the
- 16:31Speaker 2: mediator dot com and read Jordan Siler's article called first
- 16:34Speaker 2: focal plane versus second focal plane rifle scopes.
- 16:38Speaker 6: How are you feeling over there, Randal?
- 16:40Speaker 4: Pretty good about yourself? Oh? I can't be comfortable until
- 16:43Speaker 4: the dust has settled.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Question four. The topic is conservation. This state's record mule deer,
- 16:53Speaker 2: which was poached in two thousand and four, is known
- 16:56Speaker 2: as the David Letterman Buck. Oh sorry, guys, here's the
- 17:02Speaker 2: question again.
- 17:03Speaker 7: Ignore what is on the TV.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Phil is battling through some technical difficulties. Topic is conservation.
- 17:15Speaker 2: This state's record mule deer, which was poached in two
- 17:19Speaker 2: thousand and four, is known as the David Letterman Buck.
- 17:26Speaker 2: I'm gonna have to do without looking at this question
- 17:29Speaker 2: on Phil's fancy TV.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Here it is again.
- 17:34Speaker 2: This state's which was poached in two thousand and four,
- 17:39Speaker 2: is known as the David Letterman Buck. Randall could find
- 17:42Speaker 2: himself dormy with four questions to go in this with
- 17:46Speaker 2: Brody falling behind early.
- 17:49Speaker 4: I keep staring at the screen out of habit.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yes, somebody asked if you need to name the state.
- 17:55Speaker 2: That's the answer I'm looking for. You need to tell
- 17:56Speaker 2: me what state had their record mule deer poached in
- 18:00Speaker 2: two thousand and four, which is known as the David
- 18:03Speaker 2: Letterman Buck.
- 18:06Speaker 4: How big was that buck?
- 18:08Speaker 2: We can talk about it in the follow up.
- 18:10Speaker 5: Effect that.
- 18:12Speaker 4: One was even.
- 18:16Speaker 2: I'm not gonna be able to tell you about that
- 18:17Speaker 2: in the follow up fact toy, that's who shot him?
- 18:19Speaker 4: Stude?
- 18:21Speaker 2: Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 18:27Speaker 2: We have Ben saying Montana, Hillary saying Wisconsin, Chester saying Colorado,
- 18:32Speaker 2: Randall's saying Montana, Logan saying Wyoming, Christine saying California, Brody
- 18:39Speaker 2: saying Montana.
- 18:41Speaker 5: Didn't he have a place in Montana?
- 18:43Speaker 2: The correct answer is Montana. The David Letterman Buck scored
- 18:49Speaker 2: just over two hundred and seven inches and has one
- 18:51Speaker 2: of the most interesting backstories of any record book deer.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Our guest Ben Long wrote about that deer in a
- 18:58Speaker 2: twenty twenty three article, Ben, tell folks about how this.
- 19:04Speaker 3: But I also show how well read it was. Give
- 19:06Speaker 3: him the story about right right. The buck was post
- 19:10Speaker 3: on a ranch on the Rocky Mound Front is owned
- 19:12Speaker 3: by the famous late night talk show host David Letterman
- 19:16Speaker 3: why and he.
- 19:19Speaker 2: He got ed.
- 19:19Speaker 3: They clear about that David Utterman had nothing to do
- 19:22Speaker 3: with it, except that the person who who posts the
- 19:25Speaker 3: buck was also charged with conspiracy to kidnap David David
- 19:28Speaker 3: Letterman's child, which is what actually led to the to
- 19:31Speaker 3: the recovery of the buck. So anyway, can read all
- 19:33Speaker 3: about it at.
- 19:34Speaker 1: The meadeater dot com.
- 19:35Speaker 2: I want to give a few more details because I
- 19:37Speaker 2: love this story so much. He was a painter who
- 19:40Speaker 2: was hired by David Letterman to do some work, right yep.
- 19:43Speaker 2: And this painter had created a plan to kidnap David
- 19:47Speaker 2: Letterman's sixteenth month old son I think, I think a
- 19:51Speaker 2: son or daughter plus the nanny, and it was then
- 19:54Speaker 2: going to get like a five million dollar ransom. And
- 19:56Speaker 2: somebody tattled on this guy, and during the investigation they
- 20:00Speaker 2: also uncovered this book that he happened to poach, which
- 20:04Speaker 2: is the Montana Record.
- 20:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:05Speaker 3: I don't think he was ever convicted of kidnapping. I
- 20:09Speaker 3: was charged with conspiracy kidnapping and charge of possession of
- 20:12Speaker 3: the deer of an illegally taken animal. But he served
- 20:15Speaker 3: his prison time, escape from prison, went back to prison,
- 20:17Speaker 3: and is now released because he served his you know,
- 20:21Speaker 3: his time.
- 20:22Speaker 2: One of my favorite stories on our website. Question five,
- 20:25Speaker 2: the topic is fishing. This company with a rhyming name sells,
- 20:31Speaker 2: quote the original soft plastic curly tail lure. This company
- 20:38Speaker 2: with a rhyming name sells the original soft plastic curly
- 20:43Speaker 2: tail lure. That is a quote from their website, the
- 20:48Speaker 2: original soft plastic curly tail lure. Brody is very confident.
- 20:54Speaker 2: The rest of the room not so much.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Chester.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Do you have this one right?
- 20:58Speaker 5: Well? I thing popped in my head next to you.
- 21:04Speaker 5: I don't have anything written down popped in my head immediately,
- 21:10Speaker 5: but I do have some second thoughts about it, so
- 21:12Speaker 5: I'm giving it just a little more thought.
- 21:14Speaker 2: This company with a rhyming name sells the original soft
- 21:19Speaker 2: plastic curly tail lure. Randall's Humunculous has found it. You
- 21:24Speaker 2: think you have this one right now?
- 21:26Speaker 4: Actually I'm second now. I'm wondering if I'm just making
- 21:29Speaker 4: this up. Let's find out its rhyming and not not alliteration.
- 21:34Speaker 2: And the question is the question just looking for clarification. Brody,
- 21:39Speaker 2: you one hundred percent have this right.
- 21:41Speaker 6: I will throw myself off a cliff if I.
- 21:45Speaker 2: That is confidence. It's everybody who's going to come up
- 21:48Speaker 2: with an answer, have an answer for the company with
- 21:51Speaker 2: a rhyming name.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Chester.
- 21:54Speaker 2: You have an answer, but you're not sure if it's
- 21:57Speaker 2: the right answer.
- 21:58Speaker 5: I don't think it's right.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Okay, does it rhyme?
- 22:01Speaker 5: I mean no?
- 22:04Speaker 2: Then that it's not right either. Is everybody ready? Go
- 22:09Speaker 2: ahead and reveal your answers. We have been saying squirmy
- 22:15Speaker 2: without an answer, Chester, I can't see your board, Chester,
- 22:18Speaker 2: He says, twistertail. He went for alliteration. Randall saying mister twister,
- 22:23Speaker 2: Logan saying big bass baits. Christine is saying swim gym,
- 22:28Speaker 2: which I love. Christine. That's not right. That's a good answer,
- 22:32Speaker 2: Brodie's saying mister twister. Him and Randall got it. It
- 22:36Speaker 2: is mister twister.
- 22:38Speaker 4: I said you.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Anybody who could come up with a rhyme under pressure
- 22:41Speaker 3: should get a half a point.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Dude, I hate this game.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Rick Well created the first curly tail grub in nineteen
- 22:47Speaker 2: seventy five. He said that before that most soft plastics
- 22:51Speaker 2: lacked life like action, so he created a four inch
- 22:54Speaker 2: grub with a tail that moved on its own. With
- 22:57Speaker 2: billions sold, it's one of the most popular a phishing
- 23:00Speaker 2: lures of all time. Phil, we are halfway through the
- 23:04Speaker 2: game of trivia. Give us a scoreboard update.
- 23:08Speaker 7: You got Christine yet to make an impression on the
- 23:10Speaker 7: scoreboard zero points, Logan and Hillary have one point apiece, Chester,
- 23:14Speaker 7: Ben and Brody Henderson all have two points, and Man
- 23:19Speaker 7: just miles ahead of everyone else with a perfect game.
- 23:21Speaker 7: Rand williams, kay, I don't do what we want to
- 23:27Speaker 7: remind that.
- 23:27Speaker 2: They got Montana. Did you get North Carolina? Yeah, he
- 23:31Speaker 2: got North Carolina.
- 23:34Speaker 7: I missed the North Carolina one. I'm not having a
- 23:36Speaker 7: rough go of it as I apologize.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Okay, he's got so sorry.
- 23:39Speaker 4: Brody has three.
- 23:40Speaker 7: Randall is still two points ahead.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Brody. That feels good, though there's the pressure.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Uh. Randall would prefer he'd prefer to win by two
- 23:48Speaker 2: than three. Is that right?
- 23:50Speaker 4: Yes?
- 23:52Speaker 6: Question helper back, there is gonna have to start and
- 23:54Speaker 6: keeping score.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Honestly, it would be a huge help. Question six. The
- 24:08Speaker 2: topic is public Lands. This is our listener question of
- 24:11Speaker 2: the week, which was won by Hunter Payne for sending
- 24:14Speaker 2: this great question. Hunter is going to get a book
- 24:17Speaker 2: signed by Steve name. Two of the four states that
- 24:21Speaker 2: are over sixty percent federal land. Confident Brody, Ben, and
- 24:28Speaker 2: Randall Again, I need you to name two of the
- 24:31Speaker 2: four states that are over sixty percent federal land. Brody,
- 24:36Speaker 2: do you think you have one in two? Is that
- 24:38Speaker 2: how confident you are?
- 24:39Speaker 6: That's a good question. I think so probably, Ben, Like
- 24:43Speaker 6: as far as acreage or percentage.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Percent, I need you to name two of the four
- 24:48Speaker 2: states that are old.
- 24:49Speaker 6: But you're asking if I have sixty.
- 24:52Speaker 1: One?
- 24:53Speaker 4: I think so.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Ben.
- 24:54Speaker 2: How confident are you?
- 24:55Speaker 1: And your answer?
- 24:56Speaker 3: I'm feel good about it?
- 24:57Speaker 1: Feeling good, Randall?
- 24:59Speaker 4: Pretty good, feeling pretty good.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Those three treated it like a race, guessing they have
- 25:04Speaker 2: it right. Brody, whin's the last time you fished with
- 25:07Speaker 2: a Mister Twister curly tail grub.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Two a weekend?
- 25:12Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah? How to go for you? Perch? Liked it ever?
- 25:17Speaker 6: Anything on that any fish in the world.
- 25:19Speaker 1: That's right? Man.
- 25:19Speaker 4: It's funny that answer popped into my head and I thought, ah,
- 25:24Speaker 4: and then immediately doubt. Oh it just my all my
- 25:28Speaker 4: confidence vanished.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I don't know why I couldn't think of that, Randall,
- 25:34Speaker 2: I have or excuse me, Chester, I have a feeling
- 25:36Speaker 2: your tackle box has a lot of mister Twister. Yeah
- 25:38Speaker 2: tails in it.
- 25:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I I I just call them like twister tails.
- 25:43Speaker 5: I'm like a little grub, you know, twister tails.
- 25:45Speaker 2: But does everybody have an answer to answers for two
- 25:49Speaker 2: of the four states that are over sixty percent federal land, Hillary,
- 25:54Speaker 2: are you ready go ahead and reveal your answers? We
- 25:59Speaker 2: have been saying Alaska, Nevada, Hillary saying Wyoming, North Dakota,
- 26:04Speaker 2: Chester saying Alaska, Wyoming. Randall's saying Wyoming, Nevada, Logan saying Montana, Idaho,
- 26:11Speaker 2: Christine saying Wyoming, Idaho, Brody saying Idaho, Alaska. The four
- 26:18Speaker 2: states are Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and Alaska. A few folks
- 26:24Speaker 2: got tripped up with a few folks got it right.
- 26:27Speaker 2: At eighty five percent, Nevada leads the country in percentage
- 26:31Speaker 2: of land that's federally owned. That's followed by Utah at
- 26:35Speaker 2: sixty five percent, Idaho at sixty two percent, and Alaska
- 26:39Speaker 2: at sixty one percent. Just missing out of the top
- 26:42Speaker 2: four are Oregon at fifty three percent, Wyoming at forty
- 26:46Speaker 2: eight percent, California at forty six percent, in Arizona at
- 26:50Speaker 2: thirty nine percent.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Can I just take a moment to see yet? Can
- 26:54Speaker 3: I just enjoy the moment of being you know, both
- 26:56Speaker 3: Randel and Brody at that question, because that might be
- 26:58Speaker 3: my high point of the game.
- 27:00Speaker 2: He did, well, I don't know. We'll learn Alaska. A
- 27:08Speaker 2: few folks said that Alaska would be the gimme, and
- 27:10Speaker 2: then you'd be choosing from one of three after that.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Mm hmmm.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Question seven, the topic is hunting. What measurement is multiplied
- 27:20Speaker 2: by ten when scoring a turkey for the n w
- 27:24Speaker 2: t F Record Books. What measurement is multiplied by ten
- 27:32Speaker 2: when scoring a turkey for the n w t F
- 27:36Speaker 2: Record Books. A confident Ben, rest of the room, not
- 27:41Speaker 2: so confident, Logan, do you know this one?
- 27:44Speaker 5: No?
- 27:45Speaker 7: Have you ever wrote on a turkey?
- 27:46Speaker 1: Part? Okay?
- 27:47Speaker 2: Have you ever killed a turkey?
- 27:48Speaker 1: I did?
- 27:48Speaker 7: Yeah, this past year.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I killed my friend one very good. Did you score it?
- 27:53Speaker 1: No?
- 27:53Speaker 2: Okay, Brody would have said that's the wrong answer if
- 27:57Speaker 2: you said yes.
- 27:57Speaker 6: So I don't even scoring turkeys.
- 28:02Speaker 2: What measurement is multiplied by ten when scoring a turkey
- 28:06Speaker 2: for the NWTF Record Books? I know, just Brody has
- 28:10Speaker 2: not yet come up with an answer.
- 28:13Speaker 6: A lot of parts on a turkey?
- 28:14Speaker 2: And this is question seven, Randall, do you know this one,
- 28:19Speaker 2: or are you guessing.
- 28:21Speaker 4: I'm guessing there are only so many parts of a
- 28:25Speaker 4: turkey that I'm familiar with measuring. Okay, I've not killed
- 28:28Speaker 4: a turkey. I'm not a big turkey guy. Okay, turkey
- 28:34Speaker 4: season is bear hunting season.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Brody, I think we're waiting on you. Do you have
- 28:40Speaker 2: an answer? Is everybody ready? Hillary? Go ahead and reveal
- 28:50Speaker 2: your answers. We have been saying spur length, Hillary, I
- 28:55Speaker 2: can't see your board. Hillary is saying tail span, Chester
- 28:59Speaker 2: saying spur l length, Randall saying beard length, Logan saying spurs,
- 29:04Speaker 2: Christine saying beard length. Brody's saying spurs. The correct answer
- 29:11Speaker 2: is spur length. If you just said spur we will
- 29:14Speaker 2: give it to you. Turkeys are scored using three measurements weight,
- 29:19Speaker 2: beard length, and spur length. The weight is multiplied by one,
- 29:24Speaker 2: the beard is multiplied by two, and the spurs are
- 29:27Speaker 2: multiplied by ten. To see this process, go to the
- 29:30Speaker 2: mediat dot com and watch Clay Newcomb's video called how
- 29:33Speaker 2: to score a Turkey. Question eight. The topic is fishing.
- 29:39Speaker 2: This ten letter word describes a juvenile fish that's roughly
- 29:44Speaker 2: the size of a human body part. The topic is phishing.
- 29:51Speaker 2: This is question eight. We have three questions left and
- 29:53Speaker 2: we will get a scoreboard update from Fill the engineer
- 29:56Speaker 2: after this. This ten letter word describe he is a
- 30:00Speaker 2: juvenile fish that's roughly the size of a human body part. Randall,
- 30:05Speaker 2: do you have this one right?
- 30:06Speaker 4: I do.
- 30:08Speaker 2: That's that's confidence. No wavering on his end. Ben, you
- 30:11Speaker 2: are also quick to answer, do you have this one right?
- 30:13Speaker 3: I have to start with a five letter word, but
- 30:15Speaker 3: not to ten letter words. I think I'm good.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Okay, Brody is thinking hard. If he doesn't get this right,
- 30:23Speaker 2: that may be the ballgame, but we will. We will
- 30:26Speaker 2: find out from Phil after this.
- 30:31Speaker 4: You guys talk.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Amongst This ten letter word describes a juvenile fish that's
- 30:37Speaker 2: roughly the size of a human body part. Ben and
- 30:42Speaker 2: Randall may be the only ones who get this one right.
- 30:46Speaker 2: What are we communicating about over there? We're doing some winking,
- 30:49Speaker 2: We're doing some scorekeeping.
- 30:50Speaker 7: Okay, I've just made so many small mistakes today that
- 30:52Speaker 7: I'm second guessing everything I'm doing over here. Points.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Yes, I've noticed a few people in the room will
- 30:59Speaker 2: actually keep their own score on their white bod, which
- 31:02Speaker 2: is is good. That can be h the backup.
- 31:06Speaker 4: Yeah, oh, I might be counting that, might be counting
- 31:12Speaker 4: this as a correct answer.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Now, Brody just came up with an answer that he's
- 31:18Speaker 2: quite satisfied with. He had sort of an evil laugh. Uh,
- 31:21Speaker 2: do you think you have it right now? His ten
- 31:24Speaker 2: letter word describes a juvenile fish that's roughly the size
- 31:28Speaker 2: of a human body part. Was staring at the whole time.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Is everybody? Is everybody ready? Chester waving the white flag?
- 31:40Speaker 2: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have been saying fingerling,
- 31:44Speaker 2: Hillary without an answer, Chester without an answer, Randall saying fingerling,
- 31:48Speaker 2: Logan and Christine without an answer. Brody saying fingerling.
- 31:52Speaker 1: They got it.
- 31:53Speaker 2: The correct answer is fingerling. At the fingerling stage, most
- 31:58Speaker 2: fish species are about the lane of a human finger.
- 32:01Speaker 2: When they reach this size, they've developed the majority of
- 32:05Speaker 2: their protective scales and fins. Although fingerling fish resemble an adult,
- 32:10Speaker 2: they have not yet achieved sexual maturity. Phil, where does
- 32:15Speaker 2: the leaderboard stand? With two questions to go, Well, we have.
- 32:19Speaker 7: To say goodbye to Christine, Hillary, Logan, and Chester, but
- 32:22Speaker 7: we've got our guest Ben with five points and then
- 32:26Speaker 7: tied up in first place are Randall and Brody with
- 32:29Speaker 7: six ah and.
- 32:30Speaker 2: I wish I could have that path take question now,
- 32:32Speaker 2: we have some questionable scorekeeping in Randall's mind.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Over there, Randall, what do you think?
- 32:37Speaker 4: No, no, I think we're that Yeah, we're.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Tied tied with six?
- 32:41Speaker 1: Okay, sure, well.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Did you get all three of the past.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Do we need to do a review now? That would
- 32:48Speaker 2: that help everybody?
- 32:49Speaker 4: I had the score wrong in my mind. I shan't
- 32:51Speaker 4: be writing it down.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Question nine. The topic is wildlife. This next great question
- 32:57Speaker 2: comes to is via Paul s. If you have a
- 32:59Speaker 2: question you think right for meat Eater Trivia, you can
- 33:01Speaker 2: send it to trivia at the medeater dot com. Minnesota
- 33:05Speaker 2: Is official state bird, which is often misidentified as a duck,
- 33:10Speaker 2: is one of the only birds in North America with
- 33:12Speaker 2: solid bones. Right, that is right. Minnesota's official state bird,
- 33:21Speaker 2: which is often misidentified as a duck, is one of
- 33:24Speaker 2: the only birds in North America with solid bones.
- 33:29Speaker 6: You need to elaborate at all on this one, Spencer.
- 33:32Speaker 2: If you think the answer is a largemouth bass, you
- 33:36Speaker 2: could just say a bass.
- 33:39Speaker 1: That's what I was looking for.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Some quick answers in the room, and this is question nine.
- 33:47Speaker 2: It's everybody ready, go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 33:52Speaker 2: have been saying loon Hillary without an answer, Chester saying loon,
- 33:58Speaker 2: Randall saying lune, Logan's saying crane, Christine saying lun, Brody
- 34:03Speaker 2: saying lon.
- 34:04Speaker 3: I gotta do my Steve imitation. Okay, go ahead.
- 34:06Speaker 2: The correct answer is loon. Loom did very well. Lons
- 34:14Speaker 2: have solid bones so that they are less buoyant and
- 34:17Speaker 2: can better dive underwater. This helps them acquire some of
- 34:20Speaker 2: their favorite foods like fish, crawdads, shrimp, and crabs. Some
- 34:24Speaker 2: other birds with solid bones include penguins, puffins, and EMUs. Now, Brody,
- 34:29Speaker 2: I noticed you first wrote down merganzer. You had a
- 34:32Speaker 2: change of heart.
- 34:33Speaker 5: I did.
- 34:34Speaker 6: I just jumped the gun.
- 34:35Speaker 4: Okay, I'll just point out that thing.
- 34:37Speaker 3: So I said common loon, which is the official bird
- 34:39Speaker 3: of months of Minnesota, and there's like Arctic loons, yellow
- 34:42Speaker 3: bill loons in red Well.
- 34:45Speaker 2: We had a clarification. I said, you didn't have to
- 34:47Speaker 2: be that splotish.
- 34:48Speaker 1: That's what I'm you.
- 34:49Speaker 2: You nailed it, dead nuts, Phil, We have one question left.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Who's left in the game.
- 34:56Speaker 7: Oh, it's the same place we were in last last
- 34:59Speaker 7: scorekeeping call. We've got Ben with six and then Randal
- 35:02Speaker 7: and Brody still tied up with seven points apiece.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Question ten down to the wire. The topic is cooking.
- 35:09Speaker 2: What countries cuisine are fuh and bon me from? Very
- 35:18Speaker 2: confident room? What countries cuisine are Fu and bon me from?
- 35:25Speaker 2: Looks like we will be going to overtime. The confidence
- 35:28Speaker 2: that Randall and Brody have what countries cuisine are Fhu
- 35:35Speaker 2: and bond me from? Chess are doing some racing, So
- 35:44Speaker 2: it's Ben that's I feel this is question ten. Brody
- 35:50Speaker 2: is doing some second guessing.
- 35:51Speaker 1: I'm questioning it now.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Everyone's racing now Randall. Randall is confident. Oh, Brody is
- 35:56Speaker 2: going to leave his answer.
- 35:59Speaker 1: I'm just it's okay.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Well, is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 36:07Speaker 2: We have Ben saying Vietnam. Hillary's saying Vietnam.
- 36:10Speaker 5: Chess island chests.
- 36:11Speaker 2: You're saying Thailand didn't want to show us, Randall's saying Vietnam,
- 36:15Speaker 2: Logan saying Vietnam, Christine saying Thailand, Brody saying Vietnam. The
- 36:21Speaker 2: correct answer is Vietnam. The room did pretty well. Fa
- 36:25Speaker 2: is the most famous Vietnamese meal. It's a rice noodle
- 36:29Speaker 2: soup that's made with broth, meat, and herbs. Bond me
- 36:33Speaker 2: is also known as a Vietnamese baguette. It's an airy
- 36:37Speaker 2: piece of bread that's split lengthwise and filled with meat
- 36:40Speaker 2: and veggies. The media dot com has wild game recipes
- 36:44Speaker 2: for both With that, we're going to overtime between Brody
- 36:48Speaker 2: and Randall. Play the drop, Phil, how they.
- 36:56Speaker 7: Just cut it at if you ain't first your laughs
- 36:59Speaker 7: and then like go to other stuff.
- 37:00Speaker 1: It's funny.
- 37:01Speaker 7: I never liked it a Phil goff Man.
- 37:05Speaker 2: The tie breaking topic is woodsmanship. According to the National
- 37:10Speaker 2: Weather Service, what percentage of American lightning strike victims are male?
- 37:18Speaker 2: This is a numerical question. Whoever is closest between Brody
- 37:23Speaker 2: and Randall will be declared the winner. The rest of
- 37:26Speaker 2: the room will play along, though in case they hit
- 37:28Speaker 2: it right on the nose and we can add an
- 37:30Speaker 2: extra one hundred dollars donation to the end of the game.
- 37:33Speaker 6: Are you looking for a decimalness?
- 37:35Speaker 2: Go to a decimal point to one decimal point. It's
- 37:38Speaker 2: a great question, Brody. According to the National Weather Service,
- 37:42Speaker 2: what percentage of American lightning strike victims are male? Randal,
- 37:52Speaker 2: how does your attitude in this tie breaking round compared
- 37:55Speaker 2: to last week.
- 37:58Speaker 4: I mean last week. I had already checked out meal.
- 38:02Speaker 4: In fact, I knew the answer wasn't correct because the
- 38:05Speaker 4: question was asked in the past tense, and I gave
- 38:07Speaker 4: a date in the future.
- 38:09Speaker 2: You even correctly called me out on it.
- 38:10Speaker 4: Yeah, you had. I mean, I just wanted to put
- 38:13Speaker 4: my head down on the table.
- 38:16Speaker 7: Here.
- 38:16Speaker 4: I it's a.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Toss up, right according to the National Weather Service, what
