- 3:17You could be a riff raft and jumping in and say what you feel,
- 3:22whether I agree with it or not. You know, it's really not about
- 3:24a toxic environment. It's all about community of hip hop, you know,
- 3:30talking hip hop. So big shout out to hip HOPDX dot com who you
- 3:37know, over the years they helped supply a lot of hip hop content for
- 3:40this podcast. Also Double Legs they'll be coming up in the world a little
- 3:47bit. Dot com have been coming in, you know, slowly. Complex
- 3:52also in a couple of places where I get my stories from. Let's get
- 3:54right into the business though. Eminem announces a brand new album entitled The Death
- 4:02of Slim Shady who Day Gras. It'll be released in the summer of twenty
- 4:09twenty four. Where we are but you're from the future, so you know
- 4:12what you could do? Basically this was so the NFL Draft was in Detroit
- 4:20this year and Eminem was I guess, like an ambassador because it was in
- 4:27Detroit. So he also decided to not only announce the album, but there
- 4:31was like a video that came out to promote the album. Let me just
- 4:39tell you, I like this. He didn't give no date and what I
- 4:46first and foremost, I'm an Eminem fan, right. I was an Eminem
- 4:48fan ever since I heard the Slim Shady LP. I just thought he was
- 4:54dope. I liked the content because it was different from everything else listen to
- 5:00I just like variety. You know, are they playing it in the barbershop
- 5:05in the hood? I honestly never, that was never a bar for me,
- 5:10like to reach, like, yo, if they're not playing it here,
- 5:14and why should I listen to it? Honestly, it was all about
- 5:17whether I like it or not, honestly, and not everybody's gonna like everything,
- 5:23and not everybody. It's not like I grew up in the hood where
- 5:27no one listened to Sunshady or because that's not true, but I get the
- 5:31point of that, Like, it's not overwhelmingly something that all hip hop heads
- 5:38like, but you gotta respect his pen game regardless of the content. It's
- 5:44just really about how you put the words together. You know. That's what's
- 5:46respectable about Eminem, and that's why a lot of your favorite mcs like them.
- 5:54You know, it's not the content as much as it's the wordplay.
- 5:59So Eminem for me, you know, being an early fan, obviously,
- 6:05his first three albums were like just dope, back to back albums, you
- 6:11know, a nice run for Eminem. And then somewhere in the middle,
- 6:15the formula got tired, the whole Slim Shady goofy stuff, and they kind
- 6:19of repeated the formula on what was that joint called like the Final something,
- 6:26Final Cut, Final Call, I don't know, but the album was trashed
- 6:30and then he kind of went away for a little bit and he came back
- 6:33with I Believe Relapse, which felt more like early m And you know,
- 6:41I remember, well back up real quick at the end of the release of
- 6:47The Slim Shady the Eminem Show, right, I remember reading about Eminem talking
- 6:55about this album where it was almost like a funeral. Him and litl Wayne
- 6:59were saying the same thing, like, yeah, we're gonna have like this
- 7:01funeral album, you know, or death album, which seems like that's the
- 7:05idea he's going for now. But going back to the timeline eminem for the
- 7:13most part, with like relapse and recovery and renaissance or whatever. I don't
- 7:18know, you know, it's like hit or miss. And I remember he
- 7:21had that one Whack Joint where he was kind of going at Trump and it
- 7:26was just garbage, to be honest, like like literally his worst album,
- 7:30probably worse than that final Curtain Call, that's what it's called. Better than
- 7:35that curtain called Joint, Well not better. Curtain Call was probably better,
- 7:42even though at that time it just felt like the formula had been overdone.
- 7:47Then he released Kamakazie kind of as a response to people calling his album Whack
- 7:55the political album Whack. Kamakazi was dope, But honestly, he didn't really
- 8:00have any real replay value because it was really like him displaying bars all crazy
- 8:05and in the moment I was kind of like, yeah, that's what we
- 8:07talk about, you know, am his back, and it just didn't really
- 8:11have the replay value that I thought it would. Then he announced the Marshall
- 8:18Madviis two and I was like, well, yeah, here we go,
- 8:22because Marshall Madvis is one of his best albums, if not his best album,
- 8:28and it wasn't it Like I think, all I remember is like rap
- 8:33gods being dope. In the video for it was dope, especially when third
- 8:39verse where he kind of got crazy with the bars and he started levitating like
- 8:41he's reaching another level of MCing. I just thought that was really dope.
- 8:48And then I think the last project he had was Music to Murder By,
- 8:52which I really liked because I felt like, similar to Nas, Yeah,
- 9:01they mowing the lawn and it's just all and I hope, yeah I can't,
- 9:05but y'all won't get this lawn noise. I remember liking that joint,
- 9:11and I think they did a deluxe which added some more songs I liked,
- 9:16and I remember it was similar to how I felt about Nas when he released
- 9:20Life Is Good. Like when he released Life Is Good, I was like,
- 9:26this is where Nas need to be at this stage in his life,
- 9:31at this age, This is the kind of music he should try to achieve.
- 9:35Don't worry about who wants you to make Illmatic Part seventeen or people who
- 9:41were stuck in nostalgia. Make this like And he did that with his hit
- 9:48Boy Run. He continued that, and that's why I worked because it's perfect
- 9:50for nas. Now. I feel the same way with Eminem. Music to
- 9:54Murder By was like a perfect pocket between all the things he's done right,
- 10:01the slim Shady stuff, you know, Eminem inspiration records, even though Recovery
- 10:07that's I can't listen to that no more. Like it was cool at the
- 10:11time, but now ah, But I feel like the death of slim Shady
- 10:20is setting up some expectations that I don't know if he'll be able to capture.
- 10:30As an Eminem fan, I'm good if Music to murder Bib was his
- 10:33last project. The death of slim Shady makes me feel like, Wow,
- 10:39I like slim Shady. Slim slim Shady was my introduction to Eminem now,
- 10:43and I'm not talking about those singles, even though Guilty Conscience slim Shady was
- 10:50dope like songs like brain Damage and all of that. Like slim Shady is
- 10:56probably I probably prefer the slim Shady person more than the Eminem persona right,
- 11:03So I don't know exactly what that means. If it's heavy on the comedy
- 11:09side, then I kind of like that, you know what I'm saying.
- 11:13Because I wouldn't mind, because honestly, again, one of the reasons why
- 11:16I liked him back in the days was because he added a certain level of
- 11:20variety to the game along with his skill, along with Doctor dre beats.
- 11:26So I'm just hoping that the vibe is more as far as the music,
- 11:33it's more in line with music to murder By than trying to come up with
- 11:37this really convoluted idea campaign just to have a bunch of songs. I'm gonna
- 11:45skip, well, I skipped them. I don't know. I know one
- 11:48thing, and this is related before we move on on Royster five Nuns.
- 11:56I think bar Exam four. I think it was bar Exam four. He
- 12:03had this dope ass record on there that I think it had Black Thought on
- 12:09that joint, and I just remember it. It was crazy. Royce was
- 12:15crazy on there. I think Black Thought was crazy. And then at the
- 12:18end they were almost teasing Eminem feature on it, but that joint never came
- 12:24out, and I just thought, like, damn, the way this beat
- 12:26is, the way Royce is rhymen, the way Black Thought is rhymen.
- 12:31It'd be perfect to have Eminem on there too, because you know, one
- 12:35thing, about eminem When it comes to spitting amongst the greats and the spinners,
- 12:43he usually gets busy with it. We shall see, but I doubt
- 12:50it because that was so long ago that it never hit a Royce album and
- 12:56I don't who knows, maybe they couldn't play the sample or something like that,
- 12:58but song was crazy. So there you have it. So if you
- 13:05don't know, there's a long standing battle that we've covered on this podcast recently
- 13:13that was sparked by Metro Booming in Future and most notably Kendrick Lamar on a
- 13:20song called Like That where Kendrick Lamar just went at J Cole and Drake.
- 13:26J Cole responds with a record called seven Minute Drill Winds Up, apologizing to
- 13:33Kendrick and removing it from his project Mike Delete Later, which is ironic,
- 13:43and then Drake responded with the record called I Believe Push Ups that not only
- 13:50addresses Kendrick but several other people who were going at him, included Rickross.
- 13:54Ricross responds within two hours of it dropping, and the most notable thing about
- 14:01Rick Ross's this, besides the fact that he has a video now for it,
- 14:05is how he's talking at the end and talking about Drake got a know
- 14:07his job, and he sent a cease Insists to French Montana for a song
- 14:13that actually that song sounded really dope, but who knows a lot of seas
- 14:16and desists and BBL. Drake was trending. So there's a lot of back
- 14:24and forth on line. And then Drake is like constantly picking and poking at
- 14:31Kendrick, who hasn't said anything yet about responding, you know, trying to
- 14:37poke at him and get him to come out, you know, to get
- 14:41this battle going. And I think him being overly anxious and maybe a little
- 14:48nervous energy, you know, because sometimes you do things and you don't think,
- 14:54like we're talking about right now. So it releases a song that features
- 14:58a versions of Tupac and Snoop, and of course Drake rhymes at the end,
- 15:07and it caused this kind of split between the Drake stands, because I'm
- 15:13a Drake fan, but I'm not a stand the Drake stands who came up
- 15:18with all these convoluted reasons why it was dope and what he was trying to
- 15:22do, like just over explaining something that doesn't really need an explanation. Typically,
- 15:28when you got to over explain it and without being without your explanation being
- 15:33solicited by anybody. Typically you feel you feel the opposite of what you may
- 15:41say. You may not hate it, but you're coming up with reasons why
- 15:46others should love it and why it's his genius when everybody's a genius, why
- 15:48it's a genius move? Well, Snoop responded with a video that was kind
- 15:56of like huh what who what what and ones that that seemed kind of shape,
- 16:03you know, not towards Kendrick, but maybe like Snoop is hiding something,
- 16:10you know what, I'm saying something he know whatever, which would be
- 16:14dope sidebark. Kendrick responds, but got Snoop talking at the real Snoop talking
- 16:18at that, and that would be crazy. But Tupac's state threatened Drake with
- 16:26a lawsuit, and mainly because they felt like, you know, for one,
- 16:32using Tupac's voice, his likeness is his voice, and his estate owns
- 16:37it. It doesn't matter if you use the tool you used his voice.
- 16:42Because I said this before my podcast, how this works with using AI.
- 16:48You have to get an acapella sample of the real person's voice and put it
- 16:55in the software and then give them lyrics and a flow, right, That's
- 17:02kind of what was done. So the AI Tupac and the AI Snoop,
- 17:08they actually their flows were more like Drake's flow, and we could see what
- 17:15he was trying to do there from a competitive standpoint, because if people are
- 17:18wondering, well, what's the connection besides West Coast with Kendrick. More specifically,
- 17:23when it comes to Tupac on Bimper Butterfly, there's a skit at the
- 17:30end that features Tupac and Kendrick talking to one another. Now, obviously that
- 17:38was the case where it was not AI. It was I guess tde getting
- 17:45permission for Kendrick to use these interview clips of Tupac, and he basically crafted
- 17:56the conversation around what Tupac was saying, and it was more so like a
- 18:02love letter to Tupac, but he's having this conversation with him. It felt
- 18:07more like paying homage to the big homie, right, And obviously that's probably
- 18:14why they granted the estate granted him access or the permission to use it.
- 18:19As Drake, it's some internet stuff, and there was a whole bunch of
- 18:23oh yo if, but it's a mixtape. It wasn't like it was on
- 18:29you know, Apple Music or spotifyle like iTunes, only he was selling it.
- 18:33But I'm gonna stop you right there. You can't. His voice is
- 18:38Copyrd Tupac's voice. It is a part of his IP, it's a part
- 18:45of his identity. It doesn't matter if you or I put the lyrics to
- 18:48it. You're using his voice, and his estate owns his voice. And
- 18:53not only that, you're posting it to platforms who also do not have permission
- 19:00to use it, right And I don't think they were ever going to sue
- 19:06Drake, but they needed to let it be known in anybody's case, not
- 19:11just Drake, in anybody's case. You can't do that, especially as a
- 19:15part of a disk record, when Tupac is not here to pick a side,
- 19:22right like he's not. Now, Drake has since pulled the song down
- 19:30from his IG account. I think that's where it was and whatever social media
- 19:34platforms, which makes sense. It's really not that big of a deal.
- 19:41But Drake should understand that right now. And I believe I just did this
- 19:47story like two or three episodes back of artists trying to get a law passed.
- 19:56So this kind of thing can happen, and not just with It's not
- 20:00all about Drake. He's just a high profile person who used it irresponsibly.
- 20:06If there's anybody who should know, it's him because you got side dudes out
- 20:10here making full blown albums with his voice on it. And he knows what
- 20:15a season desist is because he used it with French Montana they combed the internet.
- 20:21When you try to use even a beat for one of his albums,
- 20:26you going down. So he should have known better. I thought it was
- 20:29irresponsible, just based off the fact that Tupac, in my head, he
- 20:33doesn't have a dog in this fight, and considering that he was murdered at
- 20:40a very young age based off of something that had nothing really to do with
- 20:45rap. But that's not how the collective mind share of hip hop things.
- 20:49They think East versus West. It just was done in poor taste and I'm
- 20:53glad he took it down. Should have never came out. Now. What
- 20:59he should have done is take those lyrics and just spit them yourself, not
- 21:07from Tupac's perspective, because it could come across corny if you don't do it
- 21:11right right, like if you're trying to imitate Tupac or imitate Snoop. It
- 21:19could come across kind of corny. But if you address what you think Pac
- 21:25would say within your own bars, or you know, letting Snoop down,
- 21:30then that's different, you know, and that's a little bit different. Again,
- 21:36the beat was firing, but at the same time he kind of fumbled.
- 21:41And now with Kendrick Lamar being very quiet and no, he don't have
- 21:47forty eight hours. We know y'all want to stay online and argue with each
- 21:51other all day every day, y'all like Kendrick where you at, and you're
- 21:55trying to give him the l the history of hip hop, Not everybody's dropping
- 22:00something right away. Sometimes you gotta wait. Oftentimes you might get an album
- 22:06with it. And honestly, I think that's what's gonna happen. I don't
- 22:10think at this point so much has happened between when Kendrick did that verse and
- 22:15now that. I think in a lot of ways, it's just giving him
- 22:22more to talk about because now that Drake song or this record has backfired in
- 22:29a lot of ways because you thought you was you know, you thought you
- 22:33was hot, Like Yo, I'm gonna getac Ai Tupac say this, I'm
- 22:37gonna get AI snooped to say that, and then Tupacs of State was like,
- 22:41hold up, shorty, take that down. That's just more AMMO,
- 22:48right, And two things before I move on that I kind of agree with,
- 22:55And it's not necessarily everybody knows that Kendrick is one of my face and
- 23:02this battle should happened a long time ago when the control stuff came out,
- 23:04but or he wasn't. He wasn't with the smoke back then like he is
- 23:07now. But we've seen that happen before when you think somebody fell off,
- 23:11and you know things happened. But two people who I agree with, who
- 23:18made great points, just so just off the scope of battle, rap Rosenberg
- 23:25said something that I was feeling. I just didn't articulate. But it made
- 23:30Drake seem really desperate fun answer and almost nervous for what the response would be.
- 23:38And he tried, I'm mad at this bar. He tried to do
- 23:44basically a back to back situation, uh, and then backfired, and it
- 23:51made him look like he's desperate for Kendrick to say something. Now a lot
- 23:57of people will say, yo, he dropped the old Kendrick don't want to
- 24:00smoke. I don't know some people. Some people don't move in ways that
- 24:06are obvious, so when they do decide to strike, you won't see it
- 24:11coming in. That's the thing that hebro said. Also about Kendrick. If
- 24:21you look at how much j coo to a lesser extent and Drake with the
- 24:27subliminals and we this and we that and a lot of shots and another number
- 24:33one and goat talk, and it didn't do as much as once. Subliminal
- 24:41stuff didn't do as much as when the like that joint came at came out
- 24:47and Kendrick was talking directly to them. Everything was in a frenzy as a
- 24:52result, and the controllvers did the same thing. And why because that the
- 25:00energy of battle rap when you when you cut, you know, you cut
- 25:04the strings and be like you know what, blah blah blah, say what
- 25:07you say, but we're talking to you like then it's on. It's the
- 25:11same thing when when jay Z said acts nas he don't want to well hold
- 25:15it was like now it's a discussion. It it's just a lot of like
- 25:22you want to say, okay, well things are different. Maybe Kendrick needed
- 25:26to respond, but I honestly don't think he's going to do anything without a
- 25:33real plan to end the battle like and I think that's what Drake's afraid of
- 25:42in some ways. Now Drake stands will tell you, you know, battle
- 25:48over Drake won because he put out some raps and I don't think he's put
- 25:55out anything on a level of that duppy freestyle he put out towards Push of
- 25:59Teeth that was hot and that was a straight like Kendrick, you need to
- 26:04or push a t you need to respond. I don't think any of these
- 26:08Drake this is is so crazy. I think it just even things out.
- 26:15And remember these are songs versus a verse by Kendrick, so we'll see.
- 26:21I truly expect him to address it, but I think it's going to come
- 26:23on a new project and I don't think that's happening no time soon. I
- 26:29think it's happening this year. I just don't know when. And considering the
- 26:34frenzy from the Control verse and now the frenzy from the Light That Verse,
- 26:41whenever he drops it, you could say, yo, six months is too
- 26:45late, but when it drops, it's going to be a frenzy again.
- 26:52And we just need to get the AI stuff out of it because it's really
- 26:56it's really tainting the situations, kind of making it corny in a lot of
- 27:00ways. And I wouldn't be surprised if, you know, they just all
- 27:03show up on Kendrick's album like we Family and that's it. I doubt it,
- 27:08but you know, because they know future in them saying don't trust them.
- 27:15What do you think about that the whole AI thing? Did you like
- 27:18that song? You know, I feel the way I feel, but some
- 27:21people like it, So leave your comments in the comment section below. And
- 27:25lastly, so coming fresh off of a episode commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of nazis
- 27:36Ellmatic, to check out that episode. I did a lot around that album
- 27:41because of some personal connections. But when you think about nineteen ninety four,
- 27:48there's a lot of heat that's celebrating thirty years, including Outcast's debut album,
- 27:53Southern Playlistic Cadillac Folk Music Drop in nineteen ninety four, and I remember the
- 28:00first time I was even introduced to Outcast was the video for Southern Playlistic.
- 28:10It was the video for that joint and I just remember, for one,
- 28:14loving to beat instantly, but also loving how Andre and Big Boy had more
- 28:22technical style, like more of a technical wordplay kind of style with the double
- 28:29time and all that, because you know, there was there was a lot
- 28:33of like West Coast artists I would listen to who you know, it wasn't
- 28:36really about bars and techniques like that. And even on some on the Southern
- 28:41side, you know, that was mostly a vibe and a type of music.
- 28:47But here we had outcasts with some of that same vibe, but also
- 28:52they could spit, and I think that's what attracted me to them. And
- 28:56I remember, you know, when this album dropped, I didn't get it
- 29:00right away because I was younger and I just didn't have money all the time.
- 29:04Yet I know some of y'all dudes bought everything back then, and you
- 29:08know, respect to your parents or whoever, you know, whatever you was
- 29:14doing to be able to buy every album back then. But I know me,
- 29:18the further you go back, the more I had to be in the
- 29:19record store, like I can only get one and a month later I can
- 29:26come back and get you you know what I'm saying. So I wound up
- 29:30getting Southern Playlistic a little bit later that year, and I just remember,
- 29:36I won't have that, that's one of them. Man, that's one of
- 29:38the joyses gone. But I remember hearing the album and it was just so
- 29:45different from a lot of the New York West Coast style of music, not
- 29:52just New York and West Coast, but you know, just the East Coast
- 29:56region that includes New York obviously in New Jersey, but also West Coast,
- 30:00and I just remember it being different, and I think that's what I liked
- 30:04about it. And when I liked that part of it being different, the
- 30:11name of the group resonated with me as well, because it was like,
- 30:15yo, that's a dope. That's a dope hip hop name Outcasts, And
- 30:19I believe one of the skits on the album, I think it's a joint
- 30:23called true Dad, basically tells you why their name is Outcasts. So it
- 30:30was just really dope that had this new group that had a concept, and
- 30:36they seem unconventional for the region, even though you know nowadays you can find
- 30:41many, you know, many artists influenced by Outcasts, but I felt like
- 30:45at that time I had not heard music and hip hop like that, along
- 30:51with the way they were rhymen. Now, for those who don't know,
- 30:55maybe you're younger or whatever, and you like Outcasts. That was probably the
- 31:00only album where Big Boy and Andre three thousand styles were very similar, you
- 31:07know it. They were very similar in the way they rhyme and what they
- 31:11talked about, Like this album talks heavy about weed, like it was almost
- 31:18like every song is a weed song in some way. But it's not until
- 31:23at Aliens when Andre started to experiment with different styles, And I think I
- 31:30like that version of Outcast better because not only did Big Boy become better at
- 31:34what he does, Andre three thousand changed his style in a way that complemented
- 31:41his partner, so they always sound really good together because big Boy kind of
- 31:47kept those roots a Southern playlistic while experimenting with new stuff as far as musically,
- 31:55and Andre three thousand was kind of like, this is what Outcasts sounds
- 32:00like. Going forward, we're going to be even more outcast. So it
- 32:04was pretty dope listening to that album back in ninety four. Some of my
- 32:08favorite joints on here obviously is the title track, but also players Ball,
- 32:15which I really like claiming true. I like get up and get out,
- 32:20get something like that joint crumbling herb Hoodie who Like, I really dug the
- 32:28fact that this album was really different. And one of the things about me
- 32:31as a hip hop fan that you know, when you look at hip hop
- 32:36Twitter and the discussions or whatever that happened, I never really looked to see
- 32:40where you were from first and then listen to you and kind of decide whether
- 32:46I like you based off of where you're from. I always looked at it
- 32:50like, this group is dope. When I first saw that video, I
- 32:53didn't know where they were from. Obviously they had accents, but I didn't
- 33:00know where they were from for the most part. Until you know, you
- 33:02catch little things here and then Atlanta Braves Jersey I think Andre had on.
- 33:09Then you see yourself, oh okay, they're from Atlanta. But that's never
- 33:14a prerequisite for me liking music. That's what I don't understand about some of
- 33:17you guys on social media, you hip hop cats, where you kind of
- 33:22lead with where somebody's from before you start talking about how dope they are.
- 33:28To me, it don't matter where you're from. If you nice, you
- 33:30nice. If the music's dope, it's dope. And what the Dungeon family
- 33:36obviously went on to do Organized Noise providing the soundtrack. Also, you know,
- 33:43a big boy outcasts in general also doing some of the beasts. It
- 33:46was just it was just a dope way to watch hip hop grow at a
- 33:52time where it still was relatively young, because we talking thirty years ago.
- 33:57While that means hip hop was only two not that far removed from the days
- 34:04of Curtis Blow and Run, DMC and rock Him and all of that.
- 34:07It was just a new generation a hip hop artist that included NAS and everybody
- 34:13else that was just showing hip hop is, you know, moving along into
- 34:19its thirties and you're a little bit more mature. Like twenties you may still
- 34:23be a little reckless. The thirties you're a little bit more mature, and
- 34:28you could tell. That's why the lyrics from that era of the nineties was
- 34:32just so potent from most mcs. So there you have it, but really
- 34:39quick, just want to say rest in peace to we go away. You
- 34:43know, one of the architects of the Dungeon family sound out of Atlanta doesn't
- 34:50get talked about enough. The Dungeon not that do but organized Noise just doesn't
- 34:54get mentioned a lot all enough when you talk about some of the best producers
- 35:00in hip hop history. And I know sometimes I forget myself, but rest
- 35:05in peace to that brother. What did you think about Southern playlistic Cadillac funker
- 35:12music when you first heard it? Where you are an outcast fan from day
- 35:15one? Did you come aboard when you heard Elevators on at Aliens or somewhere
- 35:22some other song down the line? Leave your comments in a comments section below.
- 35:25I love to chop it up, and that's gonna do it for this
- 35:30episode. Also, I just need y'all to know that I did an episode
- 35:35of this podcast this week, ranking Ray Kwan albums. Ray Kwon doesn't have
- 35:42many albums, but he has a couple of albums that people have just never
- 35:45heard before because they love Cuban Lank and they heard Cuban Link too, and
- 35:50they probably never really checked for the others. So I ranked the joints,
- 35:54give a little context on Ray Kwan's career from the perspective of a fan,
- 36:01and I like it. It was pretty pretty dope power it turned out.
- 36:07So definitely check that out on this channel, hit subscribe it, like comment,
- 36:12but most importantly share it with people you know enjoy this kind of content.
- 36:16Until next time, y'all. I'm not a critic I'm a fan Peace,
