- 0:22you, I've left a link in the show notes.
- 0:25Today's quote comes from Octavia Butler, an African American
- 0:29science fiction author, multiple winner of both the Hugo and
- 0:33Nebula Awards, and in 1995, the 1st science fiction writer ever
- 0:39to receive a MacArthur Fellowship.
- 0:42From her essay Purer Scribendi, she wrote.
- 0:47First, forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable.
- 0:53Habit will sustain you whether you're inspired or not.
- 0:58Habit is persistence and practice.
- 1:03Wow. First, forget inspiration.
- 1:08That opening is almost confrontational, especially
- 1:12coming from one of the most imaginative writers of the 20th
- 1:15century. You'd think inspiration would be
- 1:19everything to a creative mind like Butler's, and yet she leads
- 1:23with Forget it. Here's why.
- 1:27Inspiration is real, but it's unreliable.
- 1:31It shows up when it feels like it.
- 1:33It disappears without warning. And if you've ever waited to
- 1:37feel inspired before starting something important, you already
- 1:41know the problem. The waiting can go on
- 1:44indefinitely. Days become weeks, weeks become
- 1:49months, and the work never gets done.
- 1:52Butler herself wrote everyday. No excuses, she said.
- 1:57Even professional writers have days when they'd rather clean
- 2:00the toilet than do the writing. The difference is they write
- 2:04anyway. That's not inspiration.
- 2:07That's habit. And then there's the final line.
- 2:11Habit is persistence. In practice, it reframes
- 2:15everything. Persistence sounds heroic, like
- 2:19white knuckling through adversity on sheer willpower.
- 2:23But Butler strips away the drama.
- 2:26Persistence isn't a grand gesture.
- 2:27It's just showing up habitually, day after day, whether you feel
- 2:32like it or not. The magic is in the repetition,
- 2:36not the motivation. Butler also extended this beyond
- 2:40inspiration. She argued that continued
- 2:44learning is more dependable than talent.
- 2:47Talent fluctuates. Inspiration fluctuates.
- 2:50Habit doesn't. It's the one variable you can
- 2:55actually control. This podcast doesn't get made on
- 2:59inspired days. It gets made on all of them,
- 3:02including the ones where the last thing I feel like doing is
- 3:05sitting down and recording. What keeps it going isn't a
- 3:10surge of motivation, it's the habit of showing up every day,
- 3:15the decision made once that gets carried out automatically,
- 3:18regardless of how the day feels. Butler was right.
- 3:23Inspiration is a guest that visits occasionally.
- 3:27Habit is the one that lives here.
- 3:31So here's the question. What are you waiting to feel
- 3:34inspired to do that you could simply decide to do habitually
- 3:38instead? Because inspiration might show
- 3:42up, or it might not, but habit will be there either way,
- 3:48sustaining you, moving you forward, turning persistence
- 3:52from a heroic act into a daily practice.
- 3:56Forget inspiration, Build the habit.
- 4:00That's it for today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
