- Adam Rutz: Something goes wrong? Good. United States Navy SEAL officer Jocko Willink has become famous for teaching a mindset built around one simple word. Good. You lose the opportunity? Good. You get rejected? Good. You make a mistake? Good. Your plan falls apart. Good. Not because those things are actually what you wanted to happen. And not because you're supposed to pretend disappointment doesn't exist, but because once something has happened, you have a choice. You can spend your energy wishing reality were different, or you can immediately start figuring out what you're going to do with it. And that is one of the biggest differences between average performers and elite performers. Average performers get consumed by what happened. Elite performers Move quickly toward what happens next. An athlete gets left out of the starting lineup. Good. Now there's an opportunity to train harder, improve, and force the coach to make a difficult decision. A salesperson loses a major deal they thought they were going to close. Good. Study the conversation. Find the weakness. Improve the process. Go earn the next one. A business owner has a plan completely fall apart. Good. Maybe that exposes a weakness in the system that needed to be fixed anyway. The word good isn't about being blindly positive. It's about refusing to surrender control of your response. Because you may not control the event, but you still control what you do next. And sometimes the obstacle becomes the exact thing that forces you to grow. So today, when something doesn't go the way you expected, catch your initial reaction. Then tell yourself, good. What can I learn? What can I control? And what is the next action I need to take? You don't have to love what happened. You just have to use it. Mindset, process, discipline, execution. That's mental performance daily.
