- 0:01A lone discoverer in these menacing realms, guarded like
- 0:05termite cities from the sun, oppressed mid crowd and tramp
- 0:10and noise and flare, passing from dusk to deeper dangerous
- 0:15dusk. He wrestled with powers that
- 0:18snatched from mind its light and smote from him their clinging
- 0:22influences. Soon he emerged in a dim wall,
- 0:26Less space for now. The peopled tracks were left
- 0:30behind. He walked between wide banks of
- 0:34failing Eve. Around him grew a gaunt
- 0:38spiritual blank, a threatening waste, a sinister loneliness
- 0:44that left mine bare to an unseen assault, an empty page on which
- 0:49all that willed could write stark monstrous messages without
- 0:54control. A travelling dot on downward
- 0:58roads of dusk, mid barren fields and barns and straggling huts
- 1:03and a few crooked and phantasmal trees.
- 1:07He faced a sense of death and conscious void, but still a
- 1:13hostile life. Unseen was there, whose
- 1:17deathlike poise, resisting light and truth, made living a bleak
- 1:21gap in nullity. He heard the grisly voices that
- 1:25deny, assailed by thoughts that swarmed like spectral hordes of
- 1:31prey to the staring phantoms of the gloom and terror approaching
- 1:36with its lethal mouth. Driven by a strange will down
- 1:41ever down the sky above, a communique of doom, he strove to
- 1:47shield his spirit from despair, but felt the horror of the
- 1:52growing night and the abyss rising to claim his soul.
- 1:58Then ceased. The abodes of creatures and
- 2:01their forms and solitude wrapped him in its voiceless folds.
- 2:07All vanished. Suddenly, like a thought
- 2:09expunged, his spirit became an empty listening gulf, void of
- 2:15the dead illusion of a world. Nothing was left, not even an
- 2:19evil face. He was alone with the grey
- 2:23Python night, a dense and nameless nothing conscious mute
- 2:30which seemed alive but without body or mind lusted all being to
- 2:35annihilate that it might be forever nude and soul as in a
- 2:41shapeless beast's intangible jaws gripped, strangled by that
- 2:47lusting viscous blot, attracted to some black and giant mouth
- 2:53and swallowing throat and a huge belly of doom.
- 2:57His being from its own vision disappeared, drawn towards depth
- 3:02that hungered for its fall. A formless void oppressed his
- 3:07struggling brain, a darkness grim and cold be numbed his
- 3:11flesh. A whispered grey suggestion
- 3:15chilled his heart, hailed by a serpent force from its warm home
- 3:20and dragged to extinction in bleak vacancy.
- 3:24Life clung to its seat with cords of gasping breath.
- 3:29Lapped was his body by a tenebrous tongue.
- 3:33Existence smothered, travailed to survive.
- 3:37Hope, strangled, perished in his empty soul.
- 3:41Belief and memory abolished, died, and all that helps the
- 3:46spirit in its course there crawled through every 10th and
- 3:52aching nerve, Leaving behind its poignant quaking trail a
- 3:57nameless and unutterable fear. As a sea nears a victim bound
- 4:03and still the approach alarmed, his mind forever dumb, Of an
- 4:07implacable eternity of pain inhuman and intolerable.
- 4:13This he must bear his hope of heaven.
- 4:16Estranged, he must ever exist without extinction's peace.
- 4:22In a slow suffering time and tortured space and anguished
- 4:29nothingness. His endless state, a lifeless
- 4:32vacancy, was now his breast, and in the place where once was
- 4:37luminous thought only remained like a pale, motionless ghost,
- 4:43an incapacity for faith and hope, and the dread conviction
- 4:48of a vanquished soul, immortal still, but with its Godhead
- 4:53lost, self lost, and God and touch of happier worlds.
- 5:00But he endured, stilled the vain terror, bore the smothering
- 5:05coils of agony and affright. Then peace returned, and the
- 5:11soul's sovereign gaze. To the blank horror, a calm
- 5:16light replied. Immutable, undying and unborn,
- 5:22mighty and mute. The Godhead in him woke and
- 5:26faced the pain and danger of the world.
- 5:29He mastered the tides of nature. With a look he met with his bare
- 5:34spirit. Naked hell.
