Latest / The Daily Writer / How to Write a Book in Three Months
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, welcome to the Daily Writer, where we help writers become authors of their own lives.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: If you've been struggling to get a first draft of your book done, I want to show you a very simple system for getting it done quickly.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: I restarted this email list on June the 5th, so less than three months ago.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: And I restarted this podcast actually very soon after that.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: And my goal was to send a daily email and do a daily podcast, but I didn't want to bombard you with daily emails and podcast episodes right away.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: So in the month of June, I staggered those emails and podcasts every few days, and I did 12 emails slash episodes in total.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: By the way, when I say episodes and emails, they're interchangeable because as I mentioned before, this podcast is just an audio version of my daily emails.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: So keep that in mind.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: So I sent 12 emails and did 12 podcasts back in the month of June.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And then on July 1st, I started a daily rhythm.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Now, including today's email and podcast, that's a total of 67 emails and podcasts since July the 5th.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: And the average length of my emails is around 450 words.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Some are much longer than that, many are much shorter than that, but the average is around 450 words.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: And that is a total of approximately 30,150 words that I've written in less than three months just by doing daily emails.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Now, 30,000 words is a good-sized full-length book.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: In fact, many of my client books that I write are in the 15 to 25,000 word range.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Now imagine if you took this concept of writing around 500 words a day and applied it to your current or your next writing project.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, so hear me out.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: If you outlined a 30,000-word book ahead of time and you just plugged away by writing 500 words a day, you would be finished in 60 days.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: And if you took weekends off, you'd be done in about three months.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: So if you've been struggling to make progress in your writing, give this system a shot.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: By writing just 500 words a day, you could actually write four books a year.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: So literally, you could do a book every three months.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And in three years, that's 12, 30,000-word books.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: You don't change your life or your business with an occasional giant push.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I believe that real lasting change in your life, in your writing or your business, it comes from the daily, consistent progress that is actually what gets the best results.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Now, just as a side note, I sat down to draft this email that this podcast is based on at 7.52 p.m.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: last night on Sunday evening.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: I promised my wife that we would go for a walk at 8 p.m.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: And I wrote the first draft of this email that this podcast is based on in only eight minutes.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: And by writing in little chunks and giving myself a very tight time constraint, I was able to get it done by literally 8 p.m.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: I finished at 8 p.m.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: and I walked downstairs and we went for about a 20 or 25 minute walk, as we do pretty much every night.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: The key idea here is that when you give yourself little boxes to work in and time constraints, and when you push yourself and when you write in those little chunks, you can really, really get a lot of stuff done.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Again, the proof is right here in the pudding.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: I've literally written 30,000, over 30,000 words in under three months just by writing an email every single day.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: And you can do the same thing whether you're working on a book or it's social media posts, or maybe you want to restart an email list or whatever you're working on.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: This system really, really does work.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Hey, thanks so much for listening, as always.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Keep writing and keep showing up, and I'll see you tomorrow.
