Transcript
- 0:09All right, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:12Monday back to Iowa based programming here on the Iowa
- 0:16Sports Radio Network. Whichever of the affiliates
- 0:19you're listening to in the state or however you are listening,
- 0:21we're certainly grateful that you are as we come to you from
- 0:24Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KXNO.
- 0:28It's Trent Condon and Ken Miller for the next two hours to talk
- 0:31sports with you. Appreciate you being here.
- 0:33Here's what's coming up on our program at the bottom of the
- 0:36hour. We will start with our friend
- 0:38Scott Dockerman who covers the covers college football.
- 0:42He was at Kinnock Stadium on Saturday night, so we'll get
- 0:45Doc's thoughts on that. His latest College Football
- 0:48Playoff rankings are up at The Athletic where he writes.
- 0:51So Doc will join us coming up here at the bottom of our number
- 0:55one Bama. Bob Trent and I will put a bow
- 0:57on the weekend that was in college football.
- 1:00That starts hour number two. And then Bill Seals on Iowa
- 1:04State as they fall to Creighton on Friday night.
- 1:06But looking forward to be BYU as a Matt Campbell's team gets back
- 1:12on the gridiron coming up on Saturday, 2:30 against BYU.
- 1:19Well, I didn't see that coming until we'll get into more of
- 1:21that throughout the morning. And I thought you thought I was
- 1:23going to crush him anyways. So many, so many different
- 1:26avenues that we can take to start the show and go to Friday
- 1:29night, talk about the football or the greatest baseball game
- 1:32ever played. It was by Shohei Otani.
- 1:35We can get into the crazy days in the NFL.
- 1:38Yesterday the Broncos and the Giants was wild, or our Saturday
- 1:42in college football. And I think we should start
- 1:44right there because that moves the needle like none other.
- 1:48And Iowa is able to knock off Penn State.
- 1:50And it was so many positives to take away from that game,
- 1:53including Mark Gordowski legs. I still can't hit the broad side
- 1:57of the barn. It's got some work to do there,
- 2:00but my God, we hadn't seen him be been able to, you know, to
- 2:04use his legs in the fashion that he did.
- 2:06What an incredible performance. He starts the game one for six
- 2:09with an interception, finishes 9 at 10.
- 2:11Throws the ball twice in the second-half of the football
- 2:14game. But the story?
- 2:15Did he crack 100 yards? No, I don't think he did. 90
- 2:19something tennis 68. Even worse than I thought.
- 2:23It was a Deacon Hill type performance.
- 2:25Throwing the ball. Throwing the ball.
- 2:26However, he has those legs and even with the bum wheel, as he
- 2:30saw on the long run that ended in the Ouijan touchdown, I think
- 2:35he said after the game he has got to unhitch the plow on that
- 2:38one. But when he carried around that
- 2:40big brace with you, a little bit difficult to deal.
- 2:42What a tough guy. What the previous quarterback
- 2:47would have quit because he did quit, gave back mirror, quit on
- 2:50his team because that's the kind of person he is, Mark Gronowski
- 2:55from all indications, and hearing her parents, teammates
- 2:58talk about him. He's a leader.
- 2:59He is to come up with that kind of performance to do it with
- 3:05just pure will physicality and then two salted away with that
- 3:10play. Oh it.
- 3:10Was awesome and he and he and Lester were the only two.
- 3:13And and they had to tell Moulton before he had.
- 3:14To they told Moulton, OK, I didn't hear that because.
- 3:16You don't want him grabbing at the ball.
- 3:17Well, that's a good point, yeah. And what are the things that
- 3:20really stood out? Just that final play.
- 3:21And we'll talk more about the game.
- 3:23But that final play, it's these things you hear about Iowa
- 3:25football and it's tedious and it's monotonous.
- 3:29And it's winning. It's damn boring sometimes too,
- 3:32but. It's winning.
- 3:32But you go through practices and if you've ever just even seen
- 3:35like those 15 minute clips and you see the defense alignment or
- 3:39you watch pre game drills and they're doing the exact same,
- 3:41putting their hands up right, boom, boom, boom.
- 3:43There's over and over and over again.
- 3:46And I'm sure as a player of time, so we got to do this
- 3:48again. But you do and that play, if you
- 3:51don't have the correct fake on the play, it's a little thing.
- 3:55It is a small minute detail. But those are those small minute
- 4:00details how they can win games and how they can win games with
- 4:0368 yards passing and how they can do this year after year
- 4:06after year. It's because of those small
- 4:08details. And without that detail, maybe
- 4:10that outside backer doesn't fall for the fake.
- 4:12He gets hit and they're putting it back.
- 4:14He. Fell for the fake.
- 4:15Yes, he did and they're putting it back to him and, and who
- 4:17knows, but they did. He makes the play game over Iowa
- 4:22escapes on a weird fun night, and my voice is still feeling it
- 4:26here on Monday morning. It sounds a little bit like it.
- 4:28I bet your head was yesterday morning.
- 4:30Probably cleared by today. So Phil Parker's defense gets
- 4:34better every single week that they take the field?
- 4:36I did not see the Pro Football Focus grading numbers.
- 4:39If Keon Entre Gover wasn't the highest graded Hawkeye, then
- 4:42that thing's not worth the paper that it's printed on.
- 4:44He was unbelievable. Every single week I'm more
- 4:47impressed by this cat. And he wasn't alone.
- 4:50Wampa's best game is a hawk. Oh no, not even.
- 4:53Close, right? And we've talked about Wampa a
- 4:55few times this year playing a lot more physical.
- 4:57I mean, that's the biggest thing.
- 4:59And not just he always laid his shoulder in there, but he's
- 5:03wrapping up, he's finishing those tackles.
- 5:05And this is a guy you couple with an interception, a forced
- 5:07fumble, and those numbers are crazy.
- 5:10First interception since 2023, first forced fumble of his
- 5:13career. For a guy that's played that
- 5:15much football, I mean, that's kind of concerning.
- 5:18But here it is and it is showing up.
- 5:19And it's, yes, this was his best game, but he'd been ramping up
- 5:23to this kind of performance. And good to see him, you know,
- 5:26get that kind of pay off and have that kind of performance
- 5:28because it's been season long that he's been building and it
- 5:32really all came together. No, I, I'm, I'm totally with
- 5:34you. It's good to see local kids.
- 5:36You root for those kids to do well, especially the of the hype
- 5:39that he that that followed him to Iowa City when he left
- 5:42Southeast Polk Shire was great and like Montgomery's game.
- 5:46TJ Hall continues to impress me every single game.
- 5:48I think Parker's defense, it takes a step forward every
- 5:52single week. And they're having to do a
- 5:54completely different way. Yes, Phil's dialed up pressure,
- 5:57but we know historically this is not a team in comparison to the
- 6:00rest of college football that blitzes at a high level they're
- 6:03doing. They pick their spots, trends.
- 6:05They're doing it at a much higher level on passing downs,
- 6:07they're doing on running downs. There's a lot more run blitzes
- 6:10on there. You look at the overall numbers
- 6:12and you see Penn State held that team to what, 3.6 yards per rush
- 6:15and. They got they got some running
- 6:17backs. They got some guys back there
- 6:19that offensive line still got some pretty big pieces.
- 6:22This was one of those program victories.
- 6:25It's just it's about the team DNA.
- 6:28It's about the program and to find a way.
- 6:31Kirk afterwards emotional, talking about his bad decisions.
- 6:34And it was bad. It made it was really bad.
- 6:36And, you know, Penn State's not on the schedule next year.
- 6:39I had somebody say in the comments of my podcast.
- 6:43The last time he's going to face them if.
- 6:45Even if this year isn't it, you know, if it's down the line, but
- 6:49knowing or maybe this last time you see Mckinnick, you know that
- 6:53that kind of, we know how special the Penn State game is.
- 6:56It's where he wanted to play. He's he's told that's where he
- 6:58wanted to go and he wasn't good enough.
- 7:00That was the team, though, It was Penn State.
- 7:03And to be able to win it in that fashion, too, he made a mistake.
- 7:07So the 66 yarder, let's go to that as they're sitting in
- 7:10Ankeny in the basement. After they just missed the by
- 7:13by, I don't know, was it 10 yards short, 8 yards short
- 7:16something? So Stevens didn't take a full
- 7:18swing on that one either, though I, I don't think, yeah.
- 7:21You could see it better than I could.
- 7:22Cause it it was right towards where we sat.
- 7:24Yeah, we couldn't. I couldn't tell watching it if
- 7:26it was, you know, you know, he gave 100%.
- 7:29No, he did not. I mean he.
- 7:30Was 10 yards. Short.
- 7:31Yes, It do not take that into one iota.
- 7:34I don't believe I think that well.
- 7:36Then for the television audience, we all did and all
- 7:38speak for all of us because we didn't see a different.
- 7:41Angle, yeah, it was not a full swing.
- 7:43It was, hey, let's just kind of go.
- 7:44It looked like he was just kind of going through the motion,
- 7:46getting the motion of the kick. OK, so that makes it.
- 7:48That makes it a little easier to swallow then, and still wrong.
- 7:52Well, the other part is the left side of the line got blown up.
- 7:56I mean, that's what happened there.
- 7:58The that had come from somewhere, so.
- 8:00The left side, it wasn't just that a guy got a hand up, it was
- 8:03completely blown up. He was 4 yards into the
- 8:06backfield. He was well on his way.
- 8:08When he blocked that. So that's the other component
- 8:10too here at the time I didn't have a big problem with it.
- 8:13Obviously hindsight, terrible decision, but I don't think it
- 8:16was AS. It's funny you say that because
- 8:18I was anxious to see him try it because I thought they should
- 8:21have tried it last year and I was state right?
- 8:23Yes. And I think a lot of us would
- 8:25have liked to see that. So I wasn't willing to kill him.
- 8:29Like some people, and certainly some people get it where talking
- 8:32to people at halftime, there's a fired up by a.
- 8:35Fancy. Twitter.
- 8:36Oh, I can only imagine what that was like.
- 8:38But I because of those two aspects I didn't have nearly as
- 8:43big. Now what I hope is not a 66
- 8:45yarder, but like a 58 yarder. Yeah, that he won't flinch,
- 8:48right, right. When he won't, this won't pop
- 8:50into his head because he should be trying those because I think
- 8:54his kicker's leg is strong enough to make those.
- 8:56And you need to have your left sided line hold up.
- 8:57Well, that's the key. Don't don't let that guy get 4
- 9:00yards deep to block it and then the bounce of it right into that
- 9:03kids right into that kids hands and and he darts in and after
- 9:08outside of one drive, you dominate the first half and
- 9:12instead of potentially 13, seven, yeah.
- 9:14That's what we said after the game.
- 9:15The momentum was on. He They had momentum going into
- 9:18the locker room until. The crowd was outstanding.
- 9:21It was, you know. What?
- 9:22There's something about Kennekin.
- 9:23Yeah, isn't there? It really is.
- 9:25Especially when you guys do the black and gold.
- 9:27It looked phenomenal on television.
- 9:29It really did the stripe out. Yeah, it was great.
- 9:31It really was. It was good to see Kamari
- 9:36Moulton. Yeah, it does.
- 9:37He run harder than he ever has. I remember I asked you this this
- 9:40last week. He's runs.
- 9:43He's hard to get down. Yes, he's he runs violently.
- 9:47He does? Yeah.
- 9:48It reminds me of Pacheco in Kansas City.
- 9:50Yes. Who always gets his race work,
- 9:52doesn't he? Yes.
- 9:53On every single run, He's. He's not going to get hit.
- 9:55He's going to lay the head. And Moulton's got a little bit
- 9:57of that to him. Yeah, Jazz Patterson's always
- 9:59had that. Yeah, that's always his thing.
- 10:01But. Moulton did this.
- 10:02It's new to him. Yeah, I love what they're doing
- 10:05with Weejun. He should get a more involved.
- 10:07That touchdown, he doesn't get in if he doesn't get grabbed by
- 10:10that defender, probably not because I don't think he he
- 10:12didn't have the angle to get the edge there and turn it back in.
- 10:16So if that guy doesn't get him by the shoulder and kind of
- 10:17twist him back in, I don't think he goes in and I will.
- 10:21Offense inside a problem. Kurt, I know a lot of people had
- 10:24a problem with the field goal and I laid out my piece there.
- 10:27What I have a problem with and it's Tim Lester again.
- 10:30You can't throw the ball. 22 point conversions.
- 10:33What do they do? Run the ball, run the football.
- 10:39You blew the Iowa State game a year ago because of your
- 10:42ineptitude inside the five yard line. 2 opportunities, 2 point
- 10:45conversions. I think Kirk went forward too
- 10:47early, but that's another one too.
- 10:49Still, those play designs, they didn't have a shot.
- 10:53Those passing plays were they were brutal.
- 10:55But can we get a drag? Can we get a slant?
- 10:57Can we get something outside of just trying to throw it to the
- 11:00corner? I that needs to be worked on
- 11:03again and hopefully that comes up on Tuesday because Lester and
- 11:07two point conversions has not been a string.
- 11:08Now this is not just a Lester thing because we go back.
- 11:11Wasn't there a stretch where I would miss like fourteenth
- 11:13straight 2 point conversions? I remember us having that
- 11:16conversation a year or two ago. I think it was maybe after the
- 11:18Iowa State game at the time. Yeah, the numbers were
- 11:21ridiculous. But.
- 11:22It was something asinine that that the number was, but they
- 11:27have to be better there. I mean, you just, you have to
- 11:29have better plays than what they're doing.
- 11:30Just throwing fades up. Hope for the best with Iowa's
- 11:33wide receivers. Yeah, we're they're five and
- 11:39two. We're on the cusp of Minnesota
- 11:41coming to town. Who looks, they look really good
- 11:43on Friday night. There's so much more ahead for
- 11:48this team and I wasn't sure that that we would get to this point
- 11:51of the season and it would still all be there.
- 11:55But it's there. It's it's there.
- 11:57The Oregon game, it means something, you know you'd like
- 12:01to go back and you can't because that's not how you're allowed to
- 12:04play. And I'm not talking about the
- 12:05Iowa Stake. I'm going to talk about the
- 12:06Indiana game. I mean, that was there for the
- 12:09taking. And how much better would you
- 12:11even feel about your squad now? And you got to feel really good
- 12:13about your squad. You're 5 and 2A team that you're
- 12:16looking up at is still, is still on your schedule and they're
- 12:20coming to your. Place all the games aren't maybe
- 12:24as daunting as I've seen, at least it's.
- 12:26Nebraska's going to get killed, Trent.
- 12:28Nebraska's going to get killed. We'll get to.
- 12:29That Oh yes, we will. Because my God, that offensive
- 12:33line is. I'm guessing there's Valley's
- 12:37had better lines. It's bad. 9 sacks, 9 sacks, 9
- 12:41it's. Week after week after week, No.
- 12:43No, no, no, Ken, take me back to August.
- 12:45We had somebody that told us that they were going to have a
- 12:47better offensive line than Iowa. He did say that, but you know
- 12:50what he wrote about it. He he did me a culpa in his
- 12:53column yesterday. I'm going to have to read this
- 12:55one now. Me A.
- 12:56Culpa, Stephen M Simple, by the way, who will join us Thursday.
- 12:58Yeah, I'm sure he's looking. Forward to that there's he
- 13:00knows. I saw his Twitter, not his
- 13:02Twitter. But I have so many messages.
- 13:06Did you? Which was great.
- 13:06It's like, look at all the people out there listening.
- 13:08Yeah, it's good. And not just my buddies that
- 13:10were giggling about it, but just people in general absolutely
- 13:13killing SIP in. Minnesota is is is tough.
- 13:17They just absolutely destroyed Nebraska.
- 13:20Let's get Andy, then we'll move on.
- 13:21I want to talk about Otani. Oh, yeah.
- 13:23My good God. Hi, Andy.
- 13:25How are you? Hey, I'm a valley guy.
- 13:28I like that comment on the old life.
- 13:31Remember? Remember Ferris Bueller when he
- 13:33was gone 9 times for? 999, yeah.
- 13:38Yeah. That's Nebraska.
- 13:40Yeah, I treat talked about. I'm just joining, but yeah, I
- 13:43think I read a tweet. 2016 is the last time Iowa has converted
- 13:48A2 point conversion. Is that a fact?
- 13:50Holy. Mackerel.
- 13:51That's crazy. And then my thing with the field
- 13:53goal is you had a you had a chance to watch him be short by
- 13:5710 yards. I know it's all after the fact,
- 13:59but why didn't you dare say let's just drive a Hail Mary or
- 14:02punt it? I don't know.
- 14:04Yeah, I said earlier, Andy, I, I don't think that was a full
- 14:07swing from Stevens. I mean, watching it there in
- 14:09person, I don't think he gave full effort on that one and
- 14:12that's why I didn't have his. I was.
- 14:13I saw the same thing you did, Andy, and asked the same
- 14:16question, but apparently in the stadium it looked different, so
- 14:19we weren't there. Thanks, Andy.
- 14:21It. Was awesome being there.
- 14:22It was awesome being there. Great environment.
- 14:24Gohawk. Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:25It looked like it on TV, man, when you stripe out the stadium,
- 14:28that's a that's a special place. And you're and they showed it
- 14:30when the when the Penn State kicker was warmed up.
- 14:33I mean, you're right there, right?
- 14:35There, you're gonna hear it, you're gonna hear it.
- 14:39How about Mcsorley as I was re watching the game last.
- 14:41Night. Oh, I didn't see.
- 14:42What did he do? So they were talking and it was
- 14:44Gardner who I like Devin. Gardner, yeah, he's OK, yeah.
- 14:47He said he was talking to Mcsorley beforehand.
- 14:49Mcsorley said the loudest stadium he played in both in
- 14:52college and the pros was Connect Stadium.
- 14:54You know what? Now we do.
- 14:54Yeah, that you mentioned that. I do remember him saying that.
- 14:56Chase Mcsorley's played. He has.
- 14:58It's a big games. Yeah, big games.
- 15:00Oh, wow. Well, big win.
- 15:02Five and two. Off you go.
- 15:03Here comes Minnesota. Big win for the Gophers.
- 15:05And that game is going to be hideous, isn't it?
- 15:07It's going to be, you know, 10-9.
- 15:10Just just. Two.
- 15:12Yeah. Probably.
- 15:13This is you get to put two behemoths just running head
- 15:16first at each other for 60 minutes.
- 15:17What do you think men are so supported by?
- 15:19I know you were working. I had that.
- 15:20I had that on. So I didn't have.
- 15:22That was the only thing I put on.
- 15:23So I didn't get to see Louisville, didn't have the
- 15:25baseball game on. And I was Speaking of giggling.
- 15:27I was just. Oh yeah, all the way through.
- 15:30So I had it up there, but. I think he's OK, Lindsey.
- 15:34I think he's better than OK and he's a freshman.
- 15:38I think he's going to be really good.
- 15:40How did he get away? What did they say during the
- 15:42broadcast? His dad and his grandpa both
- 15:44played at Arkansas. I think that's what they said.
- 15:48And somehow he got there. Sam Pittman.
- 15:50Well, maybe that's the. Reason.
- 15:51Well, there's going to be a new staff coming in there is
- 15:54Gopher's going to have to pony up.
- 15:55I have a feeling they. Have a feeling you're right and
- 15:57I have a feeling they should and they and they probably will, but
- 15:59a big spot in Iowa is what? Where are they point spread
- 16:02wise? It's anywhere between Fanduel's.
- 16:05Got it at 7 1/2. So if you like the Hawks, open
- 16:08up your FanDuel app. There are nines out there at
- 16:11some place. 9 nines what I saw 7 1/2 and 7 1/2 at FanDuel and
- 16:17that was 11/30/45 minutes ago and there are nines on the
- 16:21board. I've seen that circus got a
- 16:23nine. Circus got a nine.
- 16:24Is FanDuel still 7 1/2? They are FanDuel 7 1/2, Yeah.
- 16:28So a wide range out there. I'd be grabbing those points.
- 16:31I think this is just Collision course 1310.
- 16:35Yeah, what are those games? 65.
- 16:38And the winner gets the second best trophy in all of sports.
- 16:41It's phenomenal. I love this week.
- 16:43It's a fun week. All right, Iowa State's going to
- 16:45get BYUI. Did not think BYU was for real.
- 16:48I'm still not convinced that they are.
- 16:50Where are we on the Big 12? Are you right?
- 16:53It's Plinko. You remember prices, right?
- 16:56Right. But the Plinko shit, nobody,
- 16:57there's no control of it. Nobody knows where it's going to
- 17:00end up and that's what's going to happen in this league.
- 17:03It is Plinko every single. Week Texas Tech was head and
- 17:05shoulders I thought you thought was better than anybody else.
- 17:08Both loose. Both loose.
- 17:10I thought BYU was a fake. It was a fraud.
- 17:14It's a rivalry game. I get that point.
- 17:16This is why, like Iowa State this week.
- 17:18I mean, that's a big win for BYU.
- 17:20Now a huge win, not to go on the road after emotional victory
- 17:23like that, you're undefeated. There's a reason we see this
- 17:26happen locals aside in college football, when you see a team
- 17:30like this undefeated going on the road as a ranked team
- 17:33against an unranked team. I mean this is an automatic
- 17:35smash bot, but then this is lay the points with Iowa State,
- 17:38because historically these are the spots across college
- 17:40football. Yet, yes, the home team wins and
- 17:42covers maybe convincingly because I'm still with you.
- 17:45All right, impressive. You beat your rival, But we know
- 17:48weird things happen in rivalry games, right?
- 17:50Not not every time the better team wins and and those kind of
- 17:53things. I I am left where I think Iowa
- 17:55State gets right and then we're right back to the same
- 17:58conversation because in this league, I I said this summer
- 18:01multiple times, I won't be surprised if we see a four five
- 18:04way tie at six and three for that second spot.
- 18:07And we're figuring out tie Breakers and going through all
- 18:09kinds of maturations to kind of figure this.
- 18:11That's what this league is and it's compelling and it's fun,
- 18:15but it's also one bed league because of that.
- 18:16And your mark, what are you thinking?
- 18:20Yeah, what are you thinking? Ohtani?
- 18:22Let's let's spend a minute on on Friday, Saturday night, which
- 18:25was look, we've seen guys hit three home runs.
- 18:29We've seen guys strike out ten. Yeah, we've never seen one guy
- 18:32do it in the same game. It was unbelievable, Trent
- 18:35watching the command he had on the mound and was it his second
- 18:39home run the that left the left Dodger statement second or third
- 18:42and. They were like 439 four. 69 No,
- 18:46he got short changed. Evidently the Geo fencing stops
- 18:49at that number because once it leaves the ballpark, it was
- 18:52still going. I saw the I'm like, oh, that's
- 18:55got to be short. That's 500 feet.
- 18:57No one hits him that far, no. He did not get shortchanged and
- 19:01then after he does that, what does he do?
- 19:03I believe he came out then the next inning and struck out the
- 19:06side. Just an amazing.
- 19:08Performance. There's no superlatives that
- 19:10work for this and it's this is the best baseball player we have
- 19:13ever seen. It is.
- 19:14It is. This might have been the single
- 19:16bit best performance in a game we've ever look.
- 19:19Michael Jordan made some huge shots, some huge shots in big
- 19:22spots. I don't know who else would be
- 19:24in that. Tiger Woods made some phenomenal
- 19:26putts, right? Who else but in a team?
- 19:29But Tiger sports an individual pursuit in a team sport.
- 19:33What comes close? I'm sure Gretzky had seven goals
- 19:37and three assists, but he didn't stop any.
- 19:39Yeah, if he else had to go back to pets, Flick put out the pad,
- 19:42Yeah. That's not happening.
- 19:44This was unbelievable to me, watching that.
- 19:46I just could. I was blown away.
- 19:48And he'd been in a slump. We talked about it all last
- 19:51week. They're doing this and Otani's
- 19:53not hitting. Tom Brady in the 28th, 3 come
- 19:55back victory. There's a good one, but he also
- 19:57didn't put on the pads and go over and play free safety.
- 20:00He wasn't knocking down any of those balls or making any
- 20:02tackles. It was incredible to watch.
- 20:05It was incredible to watch. I feel bad for the Brewers in an
- 20:08in an effect because this at the this team had the best record in
- 20:11baseball and they run up against that.
- 20:13And you said it all season long and I thought you were wrong.
- 20:16They've got that proverbial switch.
- 20:18And I don't think it matters who wins tonight.
- 20:21I don't think it does. I think it'd be better for Los
- 20:23Angeles if it was Seattle because then they don't have to
- 20:26travel, you know, to to 2123 time zones over.
- 20:32Yeah, we got a Game 7 tonight. What do you think I don't like?
- 20:36I don't love Bieber. Kirby was bad last time out.
- 20:39I can't see that. Twice in a row.
- 20:40And that, that was the first thought that I had, too.
- 20:44I like Kirby too much. He's won a lot of money
- 20:46throughout the year. Win the Cy Young this year,
- 20:48Yeah. He he's been injury played this
- 20:50season, but I believe in that guy more than Bieber.
- 20:54Bieber. Gave Bieber was bad in the first
- 20:57inning and then settled down in his last start.
- 20:59And that was the best since. Yeah, it's been a while.
- 21:02Yeah, it'd. Been a while, because those
- 21:03first two starts were unbelievable.
- 21:05Yeah. And then since then it's been at
- 21:07best, average. Yep.
- 21:08I'd usually blow that. Do you pitch to Guerrero at any
- 21:11point tonight? I I think it depends on
- 21:14situation but. It does.
- 21:15I just think you walk. Him just walk him say you got to
- 21:18beat us behind because. Let Barger beat you.
- 21:22Right, my guy Alejandro. Kirk or or or Kirky or Ernie
- 21:26Clement or any of these dudes. Varsho Varsho.
- 21:31'S a nice player. He's good.
- 21:32He's a really good. As long as you don't have
- 21:34Springer behind him, yeah, 'cause he's the one guy you're
- 21:37also still. That would be the one, Yeah, but
- 21:39he would he he was over last night after he got knocked down
- 21:42and he threw at the Jace twice again last night.
- 21:45Do you see that, Chippy? I mean, they're not going to get
- 21:47even tonight, one would assume, unless you're getting crushed,
- 21:50right? Yeah, If you can't win the game
- 21:51is well, I win the fight. That's what my dad always used
- 21:53to tell me. Yeah, it was a different time
- 21:56back then. All right, we'll take a time out
- 21:57before we do that. Let's go to break and give you a
- 22:01chance to win $1000 in this nationwide contest.
- 22:05Yes, it rolls on and KX and O is looking for his first winner
- 22:08before we do that. Boy High V was fun on.
- 22:10Friday. Oh yeah, it was great.
- 22:11It was. It was really good.
- 22:12I'm glad that, you know, as many people stop by and everybody, I
- 22:16think there were some big winners out there that was good.
- 22:19And I have to assume I haven't seen any numbers.
- 22:22I haven't saw any Intel but Urbandale Hyvee for that
- 22:25Spooktacular spirit sale. My.
- 22:28God, I hit it hard. Did you?
- 22:30Oh yeah bro, that was done. For the tailgate is obvious you
- 22:32did well, got set up after. So where did you you start?
- 22:34Did you go back to Prairie Meadows at the end of the night?
- 22:36And by then did you? Said uncle.
- 22:38I did. You did.
- 22:39You went back into Prairie. So we got.
- 22:41Started at a casino, Yeah. What's the name of it?
- 22:44No, that we just no, no, we met at the.
- 22:47Oh, you met at this? Yeah, that's where.
- 22:48So then right to your tailgate. Yep.
- 22:50After the game, cars parked at Prairie.
- 22:53Yep, 12451245 not going to drive.
- 22:55I'm going to Uber anyway. Yep, well, may as well go in.
- 23:00Lights are on. Lights are on.
- 23:02Let's go in there. So I walk in.
- 23:03Yeah, crap stable's full. So I go over to the the bubble
- 23:07craps, throw 100 bucks in there, lose it promptly walk back over
- 23:10to the crap stable, grab a beer. All right.
- 23:14Seemed like a good thing. It was a good idea.
- 23:16It's the time. 130 why not still full all right walk over put a
- 23:22couple bucks in a slot machine turn my 60 into 70 all right
- 23:25here we go you're. On a roll now.
- 23:27Walk back over, there's the spot.
- 23:29Yes. I throw.
- 23:32I was like third up to throw. First guy throws forever.
- 23:35Like 20 minutes gets to me. I promptly throw for almost an
- 23:40hour. It was the longest run I've ever
- 23:41had. I start with $200.
- 23:44Yes, I cash out with $999. It is the biggest craps win I
- 23:51have ever had in my life. The longest run by what?
- 23:53Time. Did you get home?
- 23:553:00-ish. It was a late night.
- 23:58How? Tough was it to get an Uber in
- 24:00Altoona at that time. Not bad because I got to think
- 24:03that they're hanging out there. Right.
- 24:04It was like a 15 minute wait, something like that.
- 24:06So I put it in there, got my chips just.
- 24:09For you. And away we went.
- 24:11So we we had a good one at Prairie.

- 24:31with us as we get things rolling here on a Monday.
- 24:34Scott Doctorman. Next, it's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 24:37Network. Hi Miller Condon, welcome back
- 24:53Iowa sports radio network. Trent Condon, Ken Miller
- 24:56flagship here at Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KXNO.
- 25:01Let's get to our friend Scott. Dr. Mini covers college football
- 25:04at the athletic. He was at Kennick Stadium on
- 25:07Saturday night watching the Penn State Iowa game.
- 25:10Doc joins us. Doc Trenton Ken, thank you for
- 25:12coming on. I want to start with you, Doc,
- 25:15and you tweeted about it and it is becoming more and more
- 25:18apparent every single week just how bad some of these line
- 25:22judges are. They get it wrong, Doc.
- 25:24It's not just once a game and it's nothing to do with Iowa.
- 25:27It's both teams. It's both ways.
- 25:30But my God, something needs to be done.
- 25:32It's happening more and more and more.
- 25:35It is. It's terrible.
- 25:36And I, I noticed it in just about every game, whether you're
- 25:40watching it on television or in person, where I think it's even
- 25:43worse because you could actually see where they are positioned.
- 25:46And I, I don't, I, I would need a official to correct me on what
- 25:52they are supposed to do during the, the game.
- 25:54But most of them seem still stationed at the line of
- 25:58scrimmage and don't start to move until the ball is the like
- 26:02running back, for instance, has moved past them.
- 26:05And a lot of times they are off by a yard because their angle is
- 26:09not, is not, you know, it straight up and down.
- 26:13And I think that's really something that needs to be
- 26:15addressed, whether it's the their mechanics of the game or,
- 26:19you know, or it needs to be corrected up above.
- 26:21Cause the NFL actually does have that kind of the some of that
- 26:24corrections, some of those corrections from their center.
- 26:28And the Big 10 has a center in Chicago and I've been there in
- 26:32Rosemont. And whether they need to say,
- 26:34hey, that's up half a yard or that's up a full yard, it used
- 26:38to happen because you know, when you're dealing with a game that
- 26:42inches matter, you've kind of be able to be there right when it's
- 26:46to make it as perfect as possible.
- 26:50Doc, this was a performance from Iowa, very Iowa like victory
- 26:54under 100 yards passing. Mark Gronowski playing with the
- 26:59physical ailment, with the knee injury, having that big brace on
- 27:02there had a couple of incredibly long runs, the game clincher and
- 27:04the one that set up a touchdown by Ouija.
- 27:06And just tell us a little bit about this guy.
- 27:09You were at the forefront before he was even in the portal.
- 27:12You talked about Iowa needed Mark Gronowski, what you saw
- 27:14about him and as you got to hear him and get to know him a little
- 27:17bit more, just let your take away on the Iowa quarterback.
- 27:22He's a gamer, he's tough, he's hard nosed and he makes plays
- 27:27and he's a winning football player.
- 27:29And you sought at South Dakota State for all of those years.
- 27:32They won national titles and you know, I think you see maybe
- 27:36perhaps as limitations at this level.
- 27:38We thought, you know, the first quarter of the first game, I
- 27:41think all of us were like, Oh my, what happened here?
- 27:44But and then it against Iowa State, he wasn't real good
- 27:47either. And and through the passing
- 27:49game. And I think part of that might
- 27:50be Iowa S limitation at tight end, because I think he's a
- 27:53tight end type of quarterback that could use somebody more and
- 27:57more, you know, in the in between the the hashes and Iowa
- 28:01doesn't have one at all. And I think that's a problem for
- 28:04the Hawkeyes. But but in particular with him,
- 28:07he uses his legs. He just makes plays that win
- 28:10games. And to me that's, you know, and
- 28:13I think most of us probably agree that Iowa wins the the
- 28:17Indiana game if he's healthy. And it's not because of his arm
- 28:20and it's because of how he engineers victory.
- 28:23And that's and if if Iowa would have had a quarterback like him
- 28:28in a couple of those Big 10 W seasons, you know, maybe even in
- 28:3122 as well, you know, Iowa might have been able to squeeze off,
- 28:36you know, one of those maybe a win in the in the Big 10
- 28:39championship. It's, it's hard to say, you
- 28:40know, the 23, you know, if they had him instead of Deacon Hill,
- 28:44I think his team actually has a puncher's chance against
- 28:47Michigan, even though that Michigan won the national title.
- 28:49So I I like the makeup of him. I think the toughness is there.
- 28:53And when he's out there, everybody believes in him and he
- 28:55believes in himself. And I think that's there's
- 28:57something to be said for that. Doc, I'm watching at least.
- 29:00I believe Keon Entringer turned into an NFL football player.
- 29:04He's been in his best the two biggest games they played in the
- 29:06Big 10. I thought he was terrific
- 29:08against Indiana, couple of missed tackles notwithstanding.
- 29:11I don't think he missed a tackle the other the other night.
- 29:13I thought he was all over the field.
- 29:15Wamka was terrific in the football game, but entering her,
- 29:17every time I watch this guy, he looks more and more like a guy
- 29:21who's going to play at the next level.
- 29:22To me, he's really turning it on at this point in his junior
- 29:26year. It reminds me a lot of Dane
- 29:29Belton. Yeah, I had 10 tackles yesterday
- 29:33for the Giant. So if you know, that's an NFL
- 29:36player there, I would say, you know, Dane was very, very quiet
- 29:39where Cohen is very outspoken and, you know, more of a leader
- 29:44type. And, and, you know, I, I think
- 29:47he's getting there for sure. You know, he he I'm sure he
- 29:50wanted that playback where he lined up offsides on gold and
- 29:53one and, you know, and it ultimately cost him, you know,
- 29:56because he wasn't an interest player in that play.
- 29:59So that's that's really a killer.
- 30:01But I'll tell you what I thought Xavier Wampa played by far his
- 30:04best game. He was everywhere.
- 30:06He's very he's always been a physical defender, but he was
- 30:08around the ball. He was doing everything.
- 30:12I mean, I I was very impressed with him.
- 30:14That was the kind of player that everybody thought they were
- 30:15going to get back when he committed and you know, and and
- 30:19he was instrumental to me. And that victory is almost as
- 30:22much as Mark Gronowski. So if their safeties are playing
- 30:26like this, you know, and I think Zach Lummer is probably the best
- 30:30defender, if not him, it's Aaron Graves.
- 30:33And I, I think that, you know, they're, they're coming around
- 30:35at the right time on defense and especially at the safety
- 30:38position. They're having to do it a
- 30:40different way this year. They're having to do it blitzing
- 30:42a whole lot more and not just on, you know, passing
- 30:45situations. Phil's always like that
- 30:46cornerback blitz. That's always something that
- 30:47he's had in his back pocket. But they're bringing pressure
- 30:50from all over the place. Are you surprised to see just
- 30:53the defensive DNA changing this much kind of on the fly this
- 30:57season? Because yeah, they'll bring some
- 30:59blitzes, But we know percentage wise it's some of the lowest in
- 31:01college football that Phil Parker, this late in his career
- 31:04is also changing up the way that they're doing things.
- 31:08It is a it is a change. I mean, I think you're seeing
- 31:10change across the board how they, you know, have attacked on
- 31:13offense, but but you're right on defense, there are blitzing with
- 31:16much more regularity than I've noticed over the years.
- 31:19And and, you know, and and I think part of it is, you know,
- 31:23he does it not just by feel, but also by design, which, you know,
- 31:28maybe he's looking at the defensive line is not getting to
- 31:31the quarterback as as much as it maybe needs to.
- 31:34And so he figures he was he would force the quarterback to
- 31:38speed up his game. And when you're playing, you
- 31:41know, first time starter on the road the other day, that made
- 31:44perfect sense, you know, forced him to make a a read a decision.
- 31:48And if he can get there, great. And Penn State's receiving corps
- 31:52is much worse. I thought it would be good this
- 31:55year. It's not good.
- 31:56And I think that was part of it too.
- 31:58But but but I think the also the choices were against Fernando
- 32:01Mendoza was don't let this guy pick you apart because he does
- 32:04have receivers and he is very accurate that you're going to
- 32:06have to just, you know, take your shot.
- 32:09So I find it really interesting. I don't know what he'll do
- 32:12though, this week against Drake Lindsay, who is really played
- 32:18well. I think this year is a first
- 32:20time starter red shirt freshman and he's got a lot of abilities
- 32:24and and I I'd assume that they're probably going to
- 32:26continue to blitz more because they do have some decent
- 32:29receivers. And and this way, if they blitz,
- 32:32then they'll catch the Darius Taylor mostly to the line with
- 32:37regularity because he's actually a very, very good running back
- 32:39as well. Doc, I want to Fast forward to,
- 32:43well, get to your get to your column on your playoff
- 32:45projections of as far as how you have it after this last week is
- 32:51the Miami. And I'm just assuming here
- 32:54obviously, 'cause I think Georgia Tech is really good.
- 32:56And, and yes, I watched with my own two eyes Miami go down in
- 33:00flames, which was kind of shocking.
- 33:02Might that be if Georgia Tech beats Miami in that game?
- 33:05Might the ACC be a one bid league again?
- 33:10If they play each other, I you know, I think that that's very
- 33:13possible. I mean, 2 Lost Miami then gets
- 33:17cast in and compared with teams in the SEC, teams in the Big 10
- 33:23that may have two losses. And then you're looking at at
- 33:27strength of schedules and and those types of things down.
- 33:30Miami still fairly strong there and based on who it's beaten.
- 33:34But when you look at the, you know, Florida's not going to
- 33:37have a winning record probably at the end of the year.
- 33:39And, you know, Florida State is just completely bottomed out.
- 33:44You know, Notre Dame is a good win for them and that'll
- 33:46probably help me get them in that position.
- 33:49But yeah, but if they're if they're 11 and 2, they probably
- 33:53still get in. But if they're tended to and
- 33:56don't make the ACC championship, which is very possible, that's
- 34:00something that they probably won't, you know, like Virginia I
- 34:04think has to probably win out because it lost to NC State and
- 34:07non conference conference game. So, so, but I think the ACC is
- 34:12is like 1 1/2, whereas you look at the the Big 12, if Texas Tech
- 34:18would have made it all the way to the championship and lost,
- 34:20then maybe it had a chance. Now in 11 and 2, Texas Tech may
- 34:25not get in. It's it's going to be a cruel
- 34:27business for those we. It is the Notre Dame punch their
- 34:30ticket, assuming they went out. They've put themselves in a
- 34:34really good position to do that. You know, I, I, I don't know if
- 34:37their, their schedule that people are going to look at it
- 34:40and judge it as pretty light. And I, I think that's fair.
- 34:44But beating USCI mean, I don't know USC, if they turn out to be
- 34:488 and four and that's their best win, how do they get judged
- 34:51against? You know, there's the runner up
- 34:53from the Big 12, the 4th or 15 for me to the Big 10 or the OR
- 34:57the SEC. That's, that's going to be
- 34:59interesting conversation because you know what they did versus
- 35:02what Illinois did to, you know, if Illinois say 10 and two and
- 35:07they're, they're 10 and two, how does that measure up?
- 35:09It'll be it'll be interesting to see how that that plays out. 10
- 35:12and 2, Notre Dame against ten and two Iowa.
- 35:16There's one spot left. I'll just say everybody else
- 35:18kind of separates themselves from the pack.
- 35:20We got a group of five team in there or ACC or Big 12.
- 35:22There's one spot left. Who gets the nod, the Irish or
- 35:26the Hawkeyes? Oh, it'd have to be Iowa.
- 35:29I don't think it'd be close. I mean, you look at I mean they
- 35:33both would have beaten USC. Iowa would have done it on.
- 35:36I would have beaten or in at home, you know, Iowa, you know,
- 35:41they the close losses that that Notre Dame has had will be
- 35:47negated by Iowa's close losses. I mean, to Indiana and in Iowa
- 35:52State, so, yeah, I mean, Iowa's resume at that point would be
- 35:55much stronger than Notre Dame's, but but Iowa has to get there.
- 35:58I'm not so sure that that's what I would be betting on right now
- 36:01at Circus Sports. Last thing, Doc, help me out
- 36:05with this whole private equity talk is, is this going to happen
- 36:07when it comes to the Big 10? I don't know.
- 36:11And I, I, I would say no would be my first response because
- 36:16Michigan is very forceful again, and USC is probably even more
- 36:19so. They're just not as vocal.
- 36:21But I talked to some Michigan people last week and there,
- 36:24there's really no way they're going to approve this right now.
- 36:26And, and part of it came for them was that, you know, they
- 36:31were kind of in the middle, mushy middle there until Penn
- 36:35State fired James Franklin. And then, then, then it kind of
- 36:37came down to, well, we don't want to, we don't really need
- 36:41the money. We've been fiscally responsible.
- 36:43Other schools have not been. And now we've got to, we're
- 36:46going to use this so they can pay James Franklin's buyout.
- 36:50No, we're, we're not, we're not going there right now.
- 36:53So I, I would say that it gets very much stalled at the moment.
- 36:57And I would trend towards doubtful that, that maybe what
- 37:01their, what their idea is, and this makes sense is, you know,
- 37:04schools get lower interest rates by going to their local banks.
- 37:07Why don't they just do that instead of instead of going
- 37:09through this private equity thing to tie everybody down for
- 37:1220 years when you don't know what the landscape of college
- 37:15sports are going to be in 10? We got 10 seconds and what I do
- 37:18want to ask you this since you cover college football and
- 37:20obviously the Big 10, this UCLA story that's took a wrote
- 37:24another positive chapter this week.
- 37:25Now the water gets deeper this weekend, but quite a story if
- 37:29with what the UCLA is putting together, at least at this part
- 37:32of the year. A lot of fun, you know, I mean,
- 37:35who knows if they do anything in Indiana, but I think so far they
- 37:39have been a tremendous revival in the span of a of a season.
- 37:43Thanks. What do you got coming up this
- 37:44week at The Athletic, Scott? I'm really digging into some
- 37:48Wisconsin stuff right now. I mean, you got to go there and
- 37:52and I've been around Iowa women's basketball story.
- 37:55So I think that's it's it's there's a lot of good going on
- 37:59for the women's basketball team. So I'm going to try to shoehorn
- 38:01one of those in this week. We'll watch for it at The
- 38:04Athletic. Scott Dockerman joins us.

- 40:23one team at 3:00. Don't see that very often.
- 40:26Don't see that? Very often, I mean, the Giants
- 40:28and the Broncos was all. World, that was, yeah.
- 40:31And when he missed the extra point, the Giants kid.
- 40:33I saw an opening. You knew it was over.
- 40:35I didn't know it was over. I mean, but that's the Bronco
- 40:37fandom in me. But there was that.
- 40:39About, I don't know, 555? I felt like no chance.
- 40:42My survivor shot is improving immensely.
- 40:45Packers are going to go down. The Broncos are going to go
- 40:48down. Who did you settle on?
- 40:50I didn't take the bears. Took the Patriots.
- 40:52Didn't take the Patriots. I'm saving them tonight.
- 40:56Late night. Oh, Seattle, the sweat is going
- 40:59to be only 51 of us. I'll have a big leg up in the
