- 0:25Now, here's Pastor Ed to take us into our study.
- 0:31Amen. Amen, open your Bibles, Genesis
- 0:33chapter 27. We're going to look at the first
- 0:3620 or so verses in our study today.
- 0:39And I've entitled it, deceit, destroys families, deceit.
- 0:45Or you could say deception, destroys families.
- 0:50Chapter 27 is another one of those unfortunate chapters in
- 0:54The Bible. A true story of manipulation
- 0:57deceit and lies within a family and the long-term consequences
- 1:03that are created. It's a lot like the sad chapters
- 1:08that come and go in our lives. Here's a sad chapter in the
- 1:10Bible. It's also like a lot of the sad
- 1:13chapters that come and go in our lives.
- 1:16We simply wish they weren't there.
- 1:18If we were writing our biography or autobiography it would be a
- 1:22chapter we just would skip you be reading in.
- 1:25It's a chapter 1, chapter 2, chapter 6 and you go, wait a
- 1:27minute, what happened? Two three, four and five.
- 1:29All we're not including that because they're not chapters in
- 1:33our lives that were proud of their not.
- 1:35Actors in our lives that we if we could go back and redo the
- 1:38chapter, we rewrite it, we would definitely go in a New Direction
- 1:42but life's not like that. It's The Good, the Bad and the
- 1:47Ugly, God uses it. All the Bible never holds back.
- 1:51This is a chapter remind us that the Bible never holds back on
- 1:55describing. The people that God uses the
- 1:57Bible, is abundantly honest about the men and women that he
- 2:02has chosen to use. It's always a painful Truthful
- 2:07realization when God, describes and details the lives of the
- 2:12people. He's chosen to use so much so
- 2:14that it the only response can be amazing grace.
- 2:18Why would god look what he did and why would God use him?
- 2:21Grace, look what she did. I can't believe how would God
- 2:24bless her grace? And this is one of those
- 2:27chapters. It's the grace of God because if
- 2:30you back off any you know, dramatic chapter and just look
- 2:34at life. Thing is Grace.
- 2:37Exactly. Where do you?
- 2:38And I really deserve any kind of right standing with God except
- 2:42by the blood of Jesus Christ, and the blood of Jesus is come
- 2:45by Grace. But these more difficult
- 2:47chapters, we shake our head at times.
- 2:49But also, we can look in the mirror and say we have our own
- 2:52faults and failures. And as God describes the
- 2:55difficulties in people's lives, it's another reason, although
- 2:59not theological, but more pragmatic, but I think valid.
- 3:02Nonetheless, it's another reason why I believe that the Bible is
- 3:06divine in origin and not human in origin.
- 3:09What I mean by that is that the Bible is exactly what it says.
- 3:12God written or God breathe. Because, if you and I were
- 3:16sitting down to write a story about deity and our interaction
- 3:19with them, we would not include the kind of stuff that God
- 3:23includes. We would clean it up.
- 3:26Even as we tell our story sometimes, I know for a fact,
- 3:29there are times from the pulpit when I'll share episodes of My
- 3:32Testimony that I do not give you the whole story.
- 3:35Not because I'm trying to make myself look better.
- 3:37It's just not suitable for a mixed audience.
- 3:42The kind of stuff I was into and the kind of send that wrapped
- 3:45its tentacles around my life and some choose not to tell the
- 3:49whole story to try to sugarcoat, you have nothing to sugarcoat
- 3:52about your past. You don't have to tell the whole
- 3:54story, but you can tell enough to go, man, we're so glad you
- 3:58got saved. And I'm glad that I got saved.
- 4:02What we have before us in chapter 27 is a true story of
- 4:06incredible deceit and favoritism in the family of Isaac.
- 4:12Isaac, the patriarch tries to circumvent the will of God by
- 4:15attempting to bless Esau, when God has already declared the
- 4:19Jacob would be blessed next. There's Rebecca, his wife, she's
- 4:22a keen manipulator and sets out to deceive her husband.
- 4:27She knows God's heart. And instead of praying for her
- 4:31husband, she Decides to help God out which we've seen many times
- 4:35already in our study in Genesis. And by the way, it reminds me of
- 4:38the proverb Rebecca does that the woman tears down her house
- 4:42with their own hands and you get a good example of that progress
- 4:46in her life. Then we have, Esau, he sells his
- 4:49Birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew and now wants it back
- 4:53desperately. And then finally, in this true
- 4:56story in this family, there's Jacob.
- 4:58He's a liar and a conniver and also a Later, a convincing con
- 5:03artist who does anything to receive the blessing from his
- 5:07father. I don't use any heavy words, but
- 5:11I think this family is a family filled with bloopers and
- 5:14blunders and I'm not in any way trying to minimize sin, but
- 5:18there are just bumbling along in life, making really bad
- 5:20decisions that are going to pay for the rest of their life.
- 5:23But God still uses them and you need to know that in your own
- 5:28life. Because you could say well, look
- 5:30at my family and look where I came from and look at the
- 5:33dysfunction, you know, that's a real popular words a day to
- 5:36describe difficult family situations.
- 5:38They're just dysfunctional their dysfunctional.
- 5:41But let me let you in on a secret.
- 5:43We all have come from a dysfunctional family.
- 5:45The only difference between your family and mine is the level of
- 5:48dysfunction. You could say it from a Biblical
- 5:51perspective, we've all come from a sinfully broken homes because
- 5:56sin is broken. Every home.
- 5:57Every home is not What God desires.
- 6:01It's not as good as it could be as it was in the garden because
- 6:05sin has broken us all. But God's grace is repairing us
- 6:10and God still uses them and he still uses us.
- 6:15Take home with you today. The incredible encouragement
- 6:18that God is work at work, even in your home, and in your
- 6:22family, in your marriage, he hasn't given up on you.
- 6:25There are Works according to Ephesians, 2:10 that God
- 6:29prepared beforehand so that you could walk in them.
- 6:31Why? Because of his grace in
- 6:34Ephesians chapter 2, it says in verse 8, will for by Grace you
- 6:37have been saved through faith. Will let me show you turn over
- 6:40to Ephesians, hold your place in Genesis will get there because
- 6:42you need to see this on your phone on you.
- 6:45Tablet on your Bible, in your paper Bible.
- 6:48I want you to see it. You might need to meditate on
- 6:50it. If they're, you know, I started
- 6:53at the end of verse 10, that there are works that God has
- 6:56prepared beforehand for you and I to walk in them as Believers.
- 7:01But the real question is, why why are their works and how are
- 7:05their works and even what are their works?
- 7:08But here is the why in verse 8 for by Grace is Ephesians
- 7:12chapter 2 and verse 8. For by Grace, you have been
- 7:16saved through faith and that not of yourselves.
- 7:20It is the gift of God, not of your good works, lest anyone
- 7:24should boast for. We are his workmanship created
- 7:28in Christ Jesus. For good works which God
- 7:33prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
- 7:38God has a gracious life ahead for you.
- 7:42It's all in preparation. What God is doing today even?
- 7:45Ooh, your failures and your dysfunction is preparing you
- 7:49for. What's up ahead?
- 7:51Please don't misunderstand me. There's not permission from God
- 7:54for you to live. And sinful dysfunction, when
- 7:57there is a sin revealed or a direction, revealed or a
- 8:01correction or instruction, we would do well to obey God and
- 8:05repenting or changing or submitting or growing and
- 8:09cooperating with God obeying him, with what we learn in the
- 8:12word. But even through all of our
- 8:15obedience and our cooperation and are listening and learning,
- 8:18we are still in great need of God's grace.
- 8:21We're still going to be walking by Gray's living by grace and
- 8:25you know as in Christ you're going to make it to heaven and
- 8:27you know how you're going to make it to Heaven by Grace
- 8:30Grace, wasn't just for your salvation.
- 8:33It was for the next steps and it wasn't just for the next steps
- 8:36but it was for your life now and it's not just for your life now
- 8:39but Grace is going to cover you. All of Heaven is going to be a
- 8:43glorious celebration of the grace of God.
- 8:47And then we ask the question, well, why Grace?
- 8:50Because God loves you. You.
- 8:52Because of his great love. That might be a barrier for you,
- 8:56he's like but I'm so unlovable. Well, God knows that.
- 9:01And he loves the parts of you that are lovable created in His
- 9:05image. And there's something about God,
- 9:07that always encourages me, is that he sees beyond what we see
- 9:11for ourselves. If you just limit yourself to
- 9:15what you see, and what you foresee, and what you think can
- 9:17happen and where you came from and your education and how much
- 9:20money you have and where you live and you'll never amount to.
- 9:24Then you're missing out on the great potential that God has for
- 9:27you in Christ. He sees far beyond your
- 9:29limitations, he is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above
- 9:33all that you think our ass. So go ahead and think big and
- 9:36ask big from God. He's able to do beyond that.
- 9:40Take the step of Faith. Be used greatly by him present
- 9:44yourself as a living side, presenting your body as a Living
- 9:47Sacrifice, even though some of you will go home to a home like
- 9:51this tonight. So we can be all encouraged in
- 9:55the pulpit and we can smile and clap and have fun in church.
- 9:58And that's great. We need it.
- 10:00Don't you ever despise that we need to laugh and hug and enjoy
- 10:04because you know what? You're going home too.
- 10:07And you know what's at work tomorrow?
- 10:10And you're hoping God miraculously put miraculously
- 10:13puts gas in your car because you drive you drove here on fumes
- 10:17and you're like I hope I can get home tonight and you know what
- 10:20happened? God's man get you home, he's
- 10:22going to take care of you but you might come home to a home
- 10:25like this tonight where it's just so jacked up and it's so
- 10:29hard and there's really nothing you can do except trust in the
- 10:33Lord, he's brought you to the end of yourself so that you
- 10:36might cry out to him and watch him sustain you in Strengthening
- 10:41of you. Even in the worst of situations,
- 10:43they can be Redeemed by Jesus, don't give up and don't quit,
- 10:48and don't throw in the towel. Your story is not over yet.
- 10:52Remember that word yet? Your story is not over.
- 10:55Yet you go at. How can you say that?
- 10:57Because you're breathing. You're listening to my voice.
- 11:02God is not done this chapter today back in Genesis, 27 serves
- 11:07as a warning that if we're not careful to cultivate our own
- 11:11personal spiritual lives, everything can fall apart Nobody
- 11:17in this story is Walking with the Lord really in a real way.
- 11:21Otherwise chapter 27 wouldn't be here.
- 11:24Notice verse 1. Now it came to pass when Isaac
- 11:27was old and his eyes were so dim that he could not see that he
- 11:31called. He saw his older son and said to
- 11:33him my son and he answered him. Here I am and he said, behold
- 11:38now I'm old. I do not know the day of my
- 11:39death now. Therefore please take your
- 11:42weapons, your quiver, your bow, and go out to the field and Hunt
- 11:45game for me. Make me some Savory food such as
- 11:50I love and bring it to me that I may eat that my soul may bless
- 11:55you before I die. It's true.
- 11:59Isaac indeed is a very old man. If you do the math, he's 137
- 12:03years old, as he lay there is eyesight's, going bad is body's
- 12:07breaking down, he begins to think about life and death, and
- 12:11he realizes that death will soon be upon him.
- 12:16Back in chapter 25, we learned that Ishmael he died about the
- 12:20same age. So there's some reality there.
- 12:23So these things are swirling in his head as they often do in our
- 12:26own head and he believes that it's time to bless his son.
- 12:30But as we read ahead and I hope you do that as we study through
- 12:34together, Isaac is not as close that close to death as he thinks
- 12:39he's going to live another 43 years.
- 12:42So he's not as close as he thinks, but doesn't that sound
- 12:45like us at? Times when we see something, we
- 12:47feel something. We think it's so real, but its
- 12:49not real at all. It's just a feeling and we're
- 12:52creating some false reality on our feelings.
- 12:54Oh, that's our Isaac is But beginning to look ahead, it's
- 12:58not it's not unwise to consider your own mortality because we
- 13:01don't know when the Lord is going to call us home.
- 13:04We don't know that day. This is wise to think about it,
- 13:07and I appreciate that as he's thinking about life and death
- 13:10that he's getting his house in order, he's getting his house in
- 13:13order reminding me, jot it down and Amos chapter 4 and verse 12
- 13:17says therefore thus I will do To You O Israel because I'll do
- 13:20this to you, prepare to meet your God o Israel and that is
- 13:25the word of the Lord to Prepare to meet your God.
- 13:28Are you ready in this concurrent condition that you're in to meet
- 13:32your God? Now, of course you can take that
- 13:35a couple of different ways. First of all, you can, I can ask
- 13:38you that question. Have you have, you had your sins
- 13:41forgiven by the blood of Jesus Christ?
- 13:43That's the only way you'll ever meet God.
- 13:46You will not be able to stand in the presence of God, on any
- 13:49other condition. It won't be on your good works.
- 13:52It won't be on your family name, it won't be on.
- 13:54You were more moral than your Mother, or your sister, or
- 13:57better than some bad character. That was in history.
- 14:01The only way you will be able to stand before God or bow.
- 14:04The knee and worship is that you have been Blood Bought cleansed
- 14:08by the blood of Jesus Christ. Are you prepared to meet your
- 14:11maker in that way? But knowing most of my audience
- 14:15today already has a relationship with Jesus.
- 14:18The next question is are you ready to meet God with the life
- 14:22that you've lived? Are you ready?
- 14:25Are you ready to say? God, here is my life.
- 14:30I stand Here by your grace. There's nothing hidden in my
- 14:33life. I'm not playing any games, I'm
- 14:36not in any car. You ready to prepare and prepare
- 14:39to meet your God? because whether it's in
- 14:42eternity, or it's in your prayer closet tonight, I wonder Among
- 14:46Us. How many of your prayer lives
- 14:49were hindered today because of anger.
- 14:53How many of our prayers today were hindered because of
- 14:56bitterness. How many of our prayers, in the
- 14:59ten minutes, we focused in prayer were hindered because
- 15:02there are unresolved issues in the marriage. or that you
- 15:07haven't done as much as possible to live at peace with all men,
- 15:10or Thousand different little things that we take for granted
- 15:16because God doesn't judge us right away, we don't feel the
- 15:19consequences right away. I like that, he's considering
- 15:23this in one of his thought is you know I need to prepare.
- 15:26I need to prepare for the future.
- 15:28I need to give out the blessing, so he tells Esau, it says there
- 15:32in verse 3 to go get some food. I understand that Isaac is a dad
- 15:36loves his son. He loves he saw.
- 15:40He saw was the man's man, remember in their personalities.
- 15:45He was his favorite, Rebecca of favored, Jacob, because Jacob
- 15:50hung hung out in the house more often.
- 15:54And these two favorite, these two spouses, a husband and wife,
- 15:58mom and dad that played favorites with their kid ruin
- 16:01their house. It's hard to believe that we're
- 16:05reading about the same Isaac here in this chapter.
- 16:09You remember, Isaac with his father back in chapter 22, was
- 16:13that submissive, loyal obedient son?
- 16:18Who was looking around, following his dad up the
- 16:20mountain saying, where's the sacrifice dad?
- 16:23Where's the sacrifice? He had a strong faith in God,
- 16:28and because of that, strong faith in God.
- 16:30He willingly climbed up on that Altar.
- 16:33And now years later he's changed unwilling to obey Prophecy in
- 16:38the word of the Lord. What we would call that today's
- 16:40he's in the flesh, he's in Disobedience, and I thought it
- 16:45was important. It's why we're not going to
- 16:46cover the whole chapter today, just to pause for a second.
- 16:50And as a pastor and as a friend, remind you that, it's very easy
- 16:54to backslide. It's very easy to backslide, a
- 16:59little compromise here, a little decision, they're a little
- 17:04shortcut, they're avoiding the word of God over this day.
- 17:08Avoiding Fellowship, avoiding spiritual nourishment, and my
- 17:12word to you is be careful. Backsliding is no nothing to
- 17:17overlook. Remember, I'm training you and I
- 17:20want you to pay attention to this if you ever hear it, the
- 17:22things that Christians love to argue about the most often are
- 17:26the most important things to understand and many times, very
- 17:30simple to understand. So there's a big debate in the
- 17:33church today. Oh, you can backside.
- 17:35No, you can't backslide. And yes, you know, you can't
- 17:37backslide. I I just don't have any time for
- 17:40that nonsense. I'm telling you right now, you
- 17:42can backslide. You can be a believer who wants
- 17:46love Jesus and serve him with all your heart.
- 17:48You can walk away from the Lord and live a life of misery.
- 17:54I can make a Biblical point for you, and I can also make a
- 17:57practical point for you. I could in this room invite
- 18:01people up here to share a testimony to prove it to you.
- 18:05And so, I'm asking you don't argue about it, avoid it.
- 18:09And some of you are still like somebody's yelling at their car
- 18:11radio right now, prove it prove it.
- 18:14I'm glad you will turn over to Hebrews chapter 2 and let me
- 18:17show you. This is just one place, but
- 18:21while you're turning over there, how do you explain, how do you
- 18:24explain so many that were once walking with the Lord, or at
- 18:28least in Fellowship that are now living in the world?
- 18:31What do you call it? Well, maybe they weren't saved
- 18:35to begin with, maybe that's possible.
- 18:39But all of them. Every single one of them.
- 18:43Every single person that's living in the world right now
- 18:46that was wants and worship once sharing the gospel wants of
- 18:49every single one of them weren't saved again.
- 18:51I don't believe that. Some of them.
- 18:54Sure, absolutely. But, you know, the thing about
- 18:57that is I have no idea. I don't know if they were saved
- 19:01or not, they said they were. So I'm going to treat him that
- 19:02way. I'ma hold him accountable to
- 19:04what the word says. You say, you're a Believer,
- 19:06you're going to be treated like a Believer, you say, you're a
- 19:09Believer and you act like an unbeliever, I'll treat you like
- 19:12a Believer that's acting. Like an unbeliever and we have a
- 19:14word for that. You're backslidden.
- 19:17And I will call you to repentance and beg you to come
- 19:19home, beg you to come back to the Lord, because that's where
- 19:23you belong. Ang and so, what did he tell the
- 19:25Hebrews chapter to your party? There before me?
- 19:27Because I got sidetracked Hebrews chapter 2, we studied
- 19:31this. I did a whole series on this.
- 19:33You can go to the website Calvary Co dot church or
- 19:36download our app and that's the best way to stay in contact with
- 19:39us. Download the app, turn on
- 19:41notifications. If you have the app and you
- 19:43don't get any notifications, delete the app and redownload
- 19:47it. And when it says, can I you want
- 19:50notifications, say yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 19:52Because there's a good. That you said, no, and so you
- 19:55don't get any of them. So delete it, and redownload it
- 19:57and answer. Yes.
- 19:59When it says, do you want notification?
- 20:01So I did a whole series on this. Just go on there.
- 20:04Go to our website, go to the app and put the word backslide in
- 20:07the search bar. I think we did for studies on
- 20:09this topic in Hebrews, but here's what it says verse 1.
- 20:13Therefore we must give the more Earnest heed to the things we
- 20:17have heard. What does your Bible say?
- 20:19Lest we drift away? So is it possible for believers
- 20:25to drift away? Yes or no.
- 20:27Just say it out loud with me it's a simple Bible quiz a plus
- 20:30plus it go ahead it doesn't say backslide.
- 20:33Okay then say this stop drifting away.
- 20:38Stay strong and follow the Lord. It is possible to drift away.
- 20:43If you want to use that language it's possible to backslide.
- 20:48If you don't take more Earnest heed and here's the thing.
- 20:51Even some listening to me right now, nobody ever really thinks
- 20:54they're going to backslide. Nobody thinks that first
- 20:58decision that first compromise is going to lead them down a
- 21:01path. So far away from God.
- 21:05I think that among us even now IQ could feel and sense the
- 21:09excitement and the joy to follow Jesus.
- 21:11We all want to grow. We all want to learn, we all
- 21:14want to change, almost always there's this attitude.
- 21:17Let's grow and let's go for the things of the Lord.
- 21:21But we know real life is not like that.
- 21:24We don't always live at that high level.
- 21:27We're not always. Yes.
- 21:28Let's go, let's go let's go we're not always that way.
- 21:31Life is hard and challenging. And difficult. and unfortunately
- 21:38some under the pressures of life, Combined with really bad
- 21:43decisions, backslide. And currently or living in
- 21:48misery and part of the misery is their self deceived, they won't
- 21:53even admit it. Is it possible for a Christian
- 21:58to backslide? Absolutely 100%.
- 22:03It's clearly taught in the Bible.
- 22:06We have Jesus spent, you know, Jesus did not waste his words
- 22:10and he spent time teaching us about the Prodigal Son.
- 22:14And I know we call it the parable of the prodigal son
- 22:17because he gets all the attention, but it's actually not
- 22:20about the Sun. And you know, not only the
- 22:24prodigal son, but you got that other son at home and how he
- 22:27copped an attitude. So he was prodigal, even staying
- 22:29at home. It's not actually about that
- 22:31son. it's a parable of the god of the father who loves And
- 22:39who's willing to receive the? Prodigal that leaves or the
- 22:43prodigal that stays. It's all about the father and
- 22:49his great love for his kids. That's a natural.
- 22:54Love that we have. It's a supernatural love from
- 22:57God. Backsliding, always equals
- 23:00misery and yes, Believers can have temporary lapses in their
- 23:04Christian faith that can last year's.
- 23:07But the good news is that every True Believer?
- 23:09When they repent and come home, they're welcomed home
- 23:11immediately. You know, you don't need to try
- 23:14to fix all the years you've been gone.
- 23:16That just pick up where you left off and let's serve the Lord.
- 23:19Let God do what he wants to do in your life, okay?
- 23:22With that, in mind, 27:5 now come back with me.
- 23:27This will be Preparatory for our next study as we finish the
- 23:30chapter as well. So this treat today's study,
- 23:32like an introduction, verse 5. Now, Rebecca was listening when
- 23:36Isaac spoke to Esau his son and he saw went to the field to hunt
- 23:40game and bring it. And remember, I told you that
- 23:44one of the greatest skills, I told Chachi this in the servants
- 23:47class, one of the greatest skills you have in ministry as
- 23:49observation. And one of the observations you
- 23:52can have is not only what you see but what you hear So now we
- 23:57have an example with Rebecca who has inside information and how
- 24:01she chooses to use it, what can be used for good.
- 24:06Or for evil. It's the same in the church so
- 24:08much pain and suffering happens in the church because there is
- 24:13precious information that you have that you've misused, you
- 24:18would have never done that. Perhaps that's true.
- 24:21But if you've ever gossiped about someone you have if you've
- 24:25ever lied about someone, you have if you've ever taken one
- 24:29little thing and made it into something that it wasn't, you
- 24:32have, of course we have, There's trust in a church family,
- 24:36there's trust among Believers and part of that.
- 24:39Trust means we're going to have information about each other.
- 24:42Like Rebecca, she hears this going on.
- 24:46She hears, what's happening? And as you read the rest of the
- 24:49chapter, you're going to see, she miss uses that information.
- 24:51So let me just say, don't misuse information to hurt other
- 24:54people. Okay.
- 24:56Pray about the information, you see and you here and then pray
- 25:00for wisdom on how to use it because you can really hurt
- 25:02people. You can really do deep damage.
- 25:04If we don't use the information God's allows us to have
- 25:07carefully. So he says in verse 6, Rebecca
- 25:10spoke to Jacob her son. She heard what was happening
- 25:12with Esau. She went right to her favorite
- 25:14son. Jacob, Saying indeed, I heard
- 25:17your father, speak to Esau your brother saying, bring me game
- 25:20and make savory food for me that I may eat it and bless you in
- 25:23the presence of the Lord, before my death.
- 25:25Now, therefore, my son obey, my voice, according to what I
- 25:28command you, Go now to the flock and bring for me there to
- 25:33Choice. Kids of the goats, and I will
- 25:35make savory food from them for your father, such as he loves.
- 25:39Then, you shall take it to your father that he may eat it that,
- 25:44he may bless you before his death, Sarah is a good
- 25:51eavesdropper. So is Rebecca.
- 25:54You can see things get passed down.
- 25:56She quickly calls. Jacob shares what he heard, what
- 25:59she heard, and then the plan. Hatched to fool, Isaac.
- 26:04And you have to ask what happened in this marriage that
- 26:08she would have no problem, deceiving her husband.
- 26:11What has happened? Don't keep secrets you.
- 26:15Marry couples. Don't keep secrets don't hide
- 26:20things from your spouse. Don't have C.
- 26:25Let your life be an open book. The Bible says that a married
- 26:30couple is to leave their mother and father and the clean to one
- 26:36another and become one. And there must have been things
- 26:41that happening in this home in a very human way, that would bring
- 26:44her to the place where she's going to manipulate her own
- 26:47husband for the sake of her favorite son against her.
- 26:50Other son, it's a pretty bad mess.
- 26:54You can't sugarcoat this. If you're challenged in your
- 26:58marriage right now and you're looking for some suggestions on
- 27:01how to rekindle romance and kindness and love in your
- 27:04marriage, I posted article on my blog not too long ago, it's
- 27:09right on the homepage, I pinned it to the homepage, I think I
- 27:12titled it. Something like 10 things to stir
- 27:16up, love and romance in your marriage, 10, or 12 things.
- 27:18Something like that, but it's right on the homepage at Taylor
- 27:21dot-org. I suggest you go look at it and
- 27:24even if you're doing exceptionally well, Well, even
- 27:27if you guys are the best you've ever been, it could be better.
- 27:30As you start paying attention to one another.
- 27:33And those of you that are single, you can start praying
- 27:35this into your life and praying it into your future spouses
- 27:37life. You don't need to wait, you can
- 27:40start asking God, make me this man make me this woman so I can
- 27:44honor the relationships that he is allows into my life, but this
- 27:47is a messed-up marriage and it didn't happen overnight verse
- 27:5011. Then Jacob said to Rebecca, his
- 27:53mom, look you saw. My brother is a hairy man and
- 27:57I'm a smooth skin man. And you remember when he was
- 28:00born, he came out all Harry. Perhaps my father will feel me
- 28:03and I shall seem to be a deceiver to him.
- 28:06So come on Mom, let's make sure he doesn't find out that we're
- 28:10deceiving. Him is basically what he's
- 28:11saying and I shall be a bring a curse on myself and not a
- 28:15blessing and listen what his mom says, let your curse.
- 28:18Be on me, my son. Only obey my voice and go get
- 28:23them from me. And let me just say your mom.
- 28:26And dad's voice is not louder than the voice of God when
- 28:29they're telling you to sin. So it's site truth here, you
- 28:34always listen to God. You don't let a pastor tell you
- 28:37to sin. You don't let a mom tell you to
- 28:39sin or a dad. Tell you to sin or a wife or a
- 28:42husband tell you God's voice when you were brought to that
- 28:45place even if you know let her let the curse be on me.
- 28:49I don't want a curse on you. I want to obey And it takes a
- 28:54lot of integrity and strength to do the right thing, even with
- 28:57those that you love and are closest to you, verse 14, and he
- 29:01went and got them and brought them to his mother and his
- 29:03mother made Savory food just as his father.
- 29:05Loved and Rebecca took the choice clothes of her Elder son,
- 29:09Esau, which were in with her in the house and put them on Jacob,
- 29:12her younger son and she put the skins of the kids on the goats
- 29:16on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.
- 29:19And she gave the Savory food in the bread, which he had prepared
- 29:22into the hand of her. Son, Jacob.
- 29:26So Jacobs a smart man. He's given a little bit of
- 29:28resistance but you know, Mom has has influence over him even
- 29:33though he's fully responsible and these words that have cursed
- 29:37would come back to haunt Rebecca.
- 29:40When she sends him away, she'll never see him again.
- 29:46And I get your mind and just how, you know, not only I use
- 29:51blunders and bloopers earlier. I just want you to get your mind
- 29:54on how goofy Jacob looks right now.
- 29:59Wearing his brothers clothing and putting the skins of the
- 30:03kids on his hands and the smooth part of his neck and he just,
- 30:07it's just ridiculous. And we go.
- 30:12Oh yeah. So ridiculous.
- 30:13But can't you think of some ridiculous situations?
- 30:16You got yourself in through sin. That's how you look.
- 30:19Just look so weird. It doesn't fit you daughter of
- 30:23the king. It doesn't fit you son of the
- 30:26king. It's not God's will for you.
- 30:31To be caught up in some scheme, some deception, just trying to
- 30:35get what you want instead of trusting in the Lord, to the
- 30:38links that we will take. The things that we will do that.
- 30:42Make us look so dumb. To lie and deceive and descend.
- 30:50One commentator. Put it again.
- 30:51He Jacob. Looks like he's coming to his
- 30:53dad in an ape suit. She didn't exist back then but
- 30:58just pretending to be something that he's not Verse 18.
- 31:03So he went to his father and said, my father, and he said,
- 31:06here, I am, who are you my son? And Jacob said, I am Esau your
- 31:12firstborn. I've done.
- 31:14Just as you told me, please arise and City to my game that
- 31:17my soul may bless me and Isaac said, how is that?
- 31:20You found it so quickly, my son and isn't the Lord.
- 31:23So gracious chance, after chance after chance after chance, like,
- 31:30when the whole bottom falls out? I'm telling you this again, as a
- 31:35pastor today, strong word. Don't you go blaming for God,
- 31:38don't you go blaming God for that.
- 31:40He gave you chance after chance. After chance.
- 31:44And just plowing through the disc, the deception, with the
- 31:47deception, in the, The Grieving of the Holy Spirit.
- 31:53Well, Isaac said to Jacob, please come near.
- 31:57Well really the lion verse 20. He said because the Lord had
- 32:01brought it to me, really, really I've been around long enough,
- 32:07I'm sure you have as well. That Christians will blame God
- 32:10for all sorts of sin. It's like it just if you get
- 32:16good at making excuses, that's all you be good for And it's
- 32:22just better to live a life that's pleasing to the Lord.
- 32:25Isaac senses, something's not right?
- 32:27But his faculties are not all there and you know in our later
- 32:30years or in those times of weakness, we really do.
- 32:32Trust the people around us to make up the difference for our
- 32:35weaknesses. You don't really expect to be
- 32:37taken advantage of. One of the greatest pains I ever
- 32:41experienced in my life is after my son passed away to see.
- 32:44How many people tried to take advantage of the death of my son
- 32:47to do me more harm, I would have never predicted that.
- 32:52You talk about trying to kick a man when he's down or kick a
- 32:55family when they're done. I would have never predicted
- 32:57that, but God is so gracious. He got us through it, be able to
- 33:02stand strong by the grace of God, but man, it's like it's
- 33:05vicious. It's Hard Out There.
- 33:08But, you know, as hard as it gets, the Lord is gracious, who
- 33:10he's going to overrule, its how you just the safest place.
- 33:15You are on the planet Earth is not to take things into your own
- 33:17hands, but to abide in Christ, let him be your Defender and it
- 33:23might be hurtful and hard and challenging at times, but you
- 33:26just let the Lord defend you. He'll take good care of you.
- 33:29So he answers, oh, it's me your son and I'm dressed up like a
- 33:32hairy liar, but he doesn't say that.
- 33:35You know, and all this conversation Isaac is sensing
- 33:39something, but he still taking advantage of because the wife
- 33:42that he trusts lied to him, the son that he trusts lied to him.
- 33:48He's not able to depend on his faculties or anything and he's
- 33:52just in such a vulnerable place. And again, I think today the
- 33:56Lord would have us to remind them out of how bad our families
- 33:59are, every family has issues, Whenever I hear descriptions as
- 34:05I had many times in the Church of difficult family situations.
- 34:09I always respond. Well, we all have family.
- 34:14We all have stories. We all have siblings or Uncle's
- 34:18or we all have family. Can I get an amen on that as out
- 34:22to you? Do you all have family?
- 34:23I have my own family and it's just the way it is.
- 34:28And you might be the generation, Everything Changes.
- 34:32You're the generation of change your the world changer in your
- 34:37family and in your home. So a lot of things are outside
- 34:40of your control but a lot of it is under your control.
- 34:43Is you choose to follow the lord.
- 34:45Well notice what happens? Then Isaac said to Jacob verse
- 34:4821, please come near that I might feel you my son whether
- 34:51you really my son Esau or not. Well you know Mom took care of
- 34:54that, didn't she? So he Jacob went near Isaac his
- 34:58father felt him said the voice is Jacobs.
- 35:01But the hands are of, Esau. He didn't recognize him because
- 35:06his hands were hairy. Like his brother Esau's, so he
- 35:10blessed him and then he said, are you really my son?
- 35:13Esau. And he said, I am will bring it
- 35:16near me so I can eat my son's game.
- 35:17So my soul may bless you and he brought it near him and he ate.
- 35:20And he brought him wine and he drank and his father.
- 35:23Isaac said to him come near now, and kiss me my son, and he came
- 35:26near and kissed him and smelled the smell of his clothing.
- 35:31And blessed him. And and I want you to see his
- 35:35wife knew this. His wife knew he would do this.
- 35:39Why? Because they live life together,
- 35:42she knew him. She covered all the bases but in
- 35:46a deceitful way. And so notice he says, surely
- 35:50the smell of my son is like the smell of a field, which the Lord
- 35:53has blessed. Therefore, may God give you of
- 35:55the Dew of Heaven, in the fatness of the earth, plenty of
- 35:58grain and wine that people serve you and Nations bow down to you.
- 36:02Be Masters over your brethren and let your mothers sons bow
- 36:05down to you cursed, be everyone who curse It's you and blessed.
- 36:09Be everyone that bless you and then we're not going to get into
- 36:13this. We'll get into it next study.
- 36:14But can't you feel the tension? And if this was a movie, the
- 36:18lights are dimmed, the angle of the camera changes and then the
- 36:21music changes. Then it happened the whole scene
- 36:25changes as Isaac finished blessing.
- 36:27Jacob, that Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of
- 36:30Isaac that Esau came and from hunting. is, you can be sure of
- 36:36this The Bible says your sin will find you out.
- 36:44It's be sure of it. Isaac isn't able to discern
- 36:50this, who this person was exactly.
- 36:52But he did send something. It was wrong.
- 36:54Something that wasn't quite right?
- 36:57Listening to The Voice, touching the neck, and the arms, smelling
- 37:00the room, the touch fooled him, his nose, led him astray, his
- 37:06eyes weren't working for him, but one thing was certain, he
- 37:09heard the voice. He knew the word from Jacob.
- 37:14Didn't sound like, Esau. And this is key with the failure
- 37:21of Isaac, here of all that's happening here.
- 37:23And even some theological issues that come about with the
- 37:26blessing of God, in the lineage for messiah, and we get to that
- 37:29in our next study. But setting that aside, I want
- 37:31to leave you with this thought. The key for Isaac here, was that
- 37:37instead of going by the word, that he heard, he relied on his
- 37:41senses, his feelings and he was deceived And the same thing can
- 37:46happen to you and me, and a practical way.
- 37:48If we leave the sure word of God, and Rely Upon Our senses,
- 37:52Rely Upon Our feelings rely upon our opinions or the opinions of
- 37:56others you and I will be deceived at one point or
- 37:59another. If we Rely Upon Our feelings and
- 38:02not the sure word of God. We're living in such a day.
- 38:08where, Believers. At least in our small circle of
- 38:13church by the dozens are leaving adopting popular opinions of the
- 38:19day, or some new popular, YouTube guy or some Tick-Tock
- 38:23guy, or whatever about. It doesn't even matter.
- 38:26Some false prophet is with pink hair or whatever, it doesn't
- 38:29even matter that they're leaving the word of God and following
- 38:33some person. And that's going to be a painful
- 38:37end. It is not going to end well.
- 38:42The Bible says to test all things and to hold fast to what
- 38:46is good. It doesn't say to go, listen to
- 38:48all things, it doesn't say to go watch.
- 38:51All things, it doesn't say to go after all things, it says to
- 38:55test all things. And what the Bible is saying is
- 38:58anything that comes to you your, to tested, by the word of God,
- 39:01it's not saying to go look at everything.
- 39:04And I've got a little bit of flak and some, even some friends
- 39:07of mine, get off says, I can't believe you told people not to
- 39:09send you YouTube videos. What kind of pasta are you?
- 39:12This is the kind of Pastor. I am.
- 39:14Don't send me any YouTube videos.
- 39:17I don't want to watch him. I don't have time for it was the
- 39:20Bible. Say, yeah.
- 39:21But what about this guy? Why are you listening to this
- 39:23guy? I've taught you the whole Bible,
- 39:25all the whole new testament Ghent from Matthew to
- 39:28Revelation. Go listen to that.
- 39:30If this is your church and you trust me, I've taught you the
- 39:32Bible, you got plenty of time to listen to Bible studies.
- 39:35If you trust me then go listen to Bible studies.
- 39:40I've got a whole discipleship reading list that I prepared for
- 39:42you. We've had almost from the
- 39:43beginning of the church, you have free time on your hands.
- 39:46I've got a lot of recommended resources that will bless you of
- 39:49trustworthy people. Email me.
- 39:51I'll send you the list. No charge printed out, your own
- 39:54sub, print it out yourself and go downstairs and pick up the
- 39:57books in our bookstore. Why?
- 39:58Because all the proceeds, even from the bookstore go to
- 40:01missionaries. You have spare time on your
- 40:04hands. I don't have spare time on my
- 40:06hands, but if I did, I'd be in the word of God.
- 40:09And if I did, I'll be reading some book that I did encourages
- 40:12me on leadership, or loving, God, or serving God or dealing
- 40:15with depression or whatever issue.
- 40:16It is, in my life that I want to seek the Lord.
- 40:18I don't need to hear some fanciful.
- 40:21Weird doctrine. That tickles my ears.
- 40:24And so you're right. I'm not a, you know, one guys.
- 40:27I can't believe you're so upset. I'm not upset about it the way
- 40:30you think. I'm like, I'm not mad at you.
- 40:32I'm mad at the Devil. I'm not mad at you.
- 40:36That's a natural. The Bible said that there will
- 40:38be the time when people in the church went on endure sound
- 40:42Doctrine. The Bible said it's if you want
- 40:45to look it up, its second Timothy chapter 4, this is
- 40:48prophesied there. Be men and women in the church
- 40:51that will not have not endure sound Doctrine, and because of
- 40:55their own desires. What got Isaac and trouble.
- 40:59His senses, his emotions. He didn't take the hey, this is,
- 41:03let's just pause for a second. The Voice doesn't sound right.
- 41:06The word doesn't sound right? And this just pause.
- 41:09But no, it's not according to their own desires because they
- 41:12have what pitching ears. So, you got to deal with your
- 41:17itching ears. Just admit it.
- 41:21And why? Because they'll Heap up for
- 41:22themselves. Teachers turn their ears away
- 41:25from the truth and be turned aside to fables false teachings.
- 41:29And so, I'm not, I'm not personally upset with you at all
- 41:32my heart breaks for you because all this time you're wasting,
- 41:35you'll never get back. And it doesn't have to be my
- 41:38teachings. There's like I have a lot of
- 41:39great, you know, could be Chuck Swindoll.
- 41:41It could be Tony Evans, it could be my friend, Tony Clark.
- 41:44It could be Pastor Chuck Smith. I got dozens of people, I got so
- 41:48much MP3s that, you'll never be able to hear anything else
- 41:51again, but solid Bible teaching the rest of your life.
- 41:56But we're living in really challenging times and we're
- 41:59looking at this family and we're super concerned about it.
- 42:02Maybe perhaps some listening might be a little judgmental of
- 42:05this family because your family is in a better place, and you
- 42:08might think, well, I'm not like that.
- 42:09And just kind of but don't miss the point.
- 42:12If you leave the word of God, you're in danger.
- 42:16And I don't just mean the interpretation of a particular
- 42:18denomination. Or I mean, just let just read
- 42:21the word and let the Holy Spirit.
- 42:23Burn it into your heart. And you can test all things,
- 42:27you're reading it, test all things, you here, a Bible study
- 42:29tested. I know some of their website.
- 42:32I can't believe you said back, Selena backside.
- 42:33Well, what do you call it? When you drift away, what do you
- 42:35call that? Call it.
- 42:36Whatever you want, Believers drift away, go ahead and test.
- 42:40What I say? It's fine.
- 42:41Doesn't doesn't bother me in a hole, but if I get one more
- 42:45YouTube video, no, I really don't have the time for it.
- 42:55If you have a Bible question this is the neat thing about
- 42:59Bible study. When you're in a church that
- 43:00teaches Through the Bible. If you have a Bible question
- 43:04attach it to a verse and there's a very good chance.
- 43:07I taught that verse. So you want to know where the
- 43:09answer is in that Bible study that you come to this chapter, I
- 43:13can't believe it. What is God do with all these
- 43:15families in chapter 27? In Genesis, I can't believe it.
- 43:18How could God bless this family? Well, we're going to spend two
- 43:22nights teaching on two whole weeks.
- 43:24Teaching this study that We will answer most likely those
- 43:26questions because the real theological question in this
- 43:30chapter is no, wait a minute. Wasn't the will of God for Jacob
- 43:34to receive the blessing. Whoa, that's the lineage.
- 43:42But then this is where the mistake.
- 43:44You be? Making the answers.
- 43:45Yes. But don't back in your
- 43:47hypotheticals to the Bible. All we know is, this is how it
- 43:50happened. But what if and what it don't,
- 43:52what if anything God says, this is how it happened.
- 43:55And one of the reasons I believe, he said it this way,
- 43:57and it happened this way. So, you would know that in your
- 44:00dysfunctional family, God can still redeem all the Brokenness
- 44:03and you too. By his grace.
- 44:06And so it's just so neat. The older I get, the more
- 44:08simple. I want to be in my walk with the
- 44:09Lord. The more filled with the love
- 44:12and grace of God, the more laser focus and more singular focused
- 44:16with my time and my attention. So that perhaps my life can
- 44:21bring more glory of God and not less.
- 44:24And I invite you to join me on the journey.
- 44:26That's really what the church is.
- 44:27All about. Let's do it together and then we
- 44:29Rejoice together. We cry together, We Fight
- 44:32Together. We Will We don't fight each
- 44:34other. Other like we fight the real
- 44:35enemy and we handle things biblically and just let the Holy
- 44:39Spirit. Sort it out.
- 44:41Amen. Well Lord, thank you for this
- 44:44section of scripture and all that you're trying to teach us
- 44:47and How how you want us to be prepared for what you're wanting
- 44:53to do in our lives? And I know I look back God, I
- 44:57see my own mistakes, my own prayerlessness.
- 45:00My own weakness, my own. even as a pastor, just Bad decisions,
- 45:09Lord and I'm grateful for your grace and your mercy.
- 45:15I'm grateful for your sustaining Grace and your sustaining mercy
- 45:20and I'm grateful Lord. That Even for those that might
- 45:24wander away, they can always come back.
- 45:28You receive them just like that. Prodigal Son.
- 45:31And even throw a party for them. It's unbelievable.
- 45:35You're so good to us. So bless us tonight as we head
- 45:37into a heavy weekend and for those of us that will be here
- 45:40all weekend, give us the supernatural strength that we
- 45:43need to be fresh. Not to complain about it, not to
- 45:47be upset about it, but just to serve you with the with the
- 45:50knowledge, that it's such a privilege to do.
