Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Mike Benton, thank you very much. Lane, a 6-3 win
- 0:05Speaker 1: in Motown the other night, a game in which you
- 0:07Speaker 1: felt the team needed a better start at the end
- 0:10Speaker 1: of the day. You got the result that you wanted.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Just take us back through those 60 minutes in Detroit
- 0:15Speaker 1: and how you felt the Kraken played overall.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Well, I think they came out hard at us, which
- 0:19Speaker 2: teams are going to do at times in their buildings, obviously.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Todd McClellan's team is a high-shock volume team. They delivered
- 0:27Speaker 2: everything at the net. They went to the net. I
- 0:30Speaker 2: thought You know, we did a pretty good job for
- 0:32Speaker 2: the most part of limiting their seconds.
- 0:35Speaker 3: But Ruby played well for us. And, you know, and
- 0:38Speaker 3: then we kind of got our sights set, so to speak.
- 0:43Speaker 2: And we started sniping. And, you know, they didn't have
- 0:49Speaker 2: an answer for that. But we certainly took advantage of
- 0:52Speaker 2: our opportunities.
- 0:54Speaker 1: What was the turning point in that game for you
- 0:56Speaker 1: after that first period? They get one early, but then
- 0:59Speaker 1: ultimately you're able to score four in a row, the
- 1:02Speaker 1: fourth line really coming alive in that game. Was there
- 1:05Speaker 1: a moment?
- 1:05Speaker 3: Was there a play?
- 1:06Speaker 1: Did you get into them in the locker room at
- 1:08Speaker 1: the intermission? Where do you feel that turning point was
- 1:10Speaker 1: for Seattle?
- 1:12Speaker 3: No, I didn't get into them in the locker room.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I think the leadership and the players did a good
- 1:21Speaker 2: job of sort of recognizing that things could be a
- 1:24Speaker 2: little bit better.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I've seen us worse.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Let's put it that way. It wasn't like a total disaster.
- 1:29Speaker 2: We were battling. Sometimes when you're watching it live and
- 1:35Speaker 2: you're looking up at the shot clock, your heart rate
- 1:37Speaker 2: goes up a little bit. But re-watching it, it wasn't
- 1:44Speaker 2: as bad as maybe it felt. That's converse to the
- 1:49Speaker 2: Vegas game where re-watching it, it was worse than you thought.
- 1:55Speaker 2: But no, I think that we just got our legs going.
- 1:59Speaker 2: The bottom line is we started skating better and our
- 2:03Speaker 2: team has to skate. If we don't skate, we're not
- 2:08Speaker 2: going to have success. We're not built to not skate.
- 2:12Speaker 2: We're built to skate. We're built for speed. We're not
- 2:17Speaker 2: the biggest team. We're not the smallest team either, but
- 2:21Speaker 2: At the end of the day, we have to skate,
- 2:22Speaker 2: and I thought we started skating.
- 2:24Speaker 1: We found out yesterday that Jacob Melanson is going to
- 2:26Speaker 1: be out for an extended period of time after a
- 2:28Speaker 1: scary situation last week in Calgary. Obviously, his health is
- 2:32Speaker 1: most important. Have you been able to talk to him?
- 2:35Speaker 1: How is he?
- 2:36Speaker 3: How are his spirits?
- 2:37Speaker 1: I know that the Kraken are working on a slow process,
- 2:42Speaker 1: a slow recovery to get him back to playing hockey,
- 2:44Speaker 1: but what can you share about his status, his prognosis,
- 2:48Speaker 1: and how he's feeling overall?
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he's feeling pretty good now. I think
- 2:54Speaker 2: he's optimistic, obviously. I've talked to him every step of
- 2:59Speaker 2: the way here right from the time it happened to
- 3:03Speaker 2: as late as yesterday.
- 3:04Speaker 3: So he's just on the road to recovery. Get healthy,
- 3:10Speaker 3: get better, and we'll go from there. We miss him.
- 3:15Speaker 3: We look forward to getting him back in our lineup.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Big member.
- 3:17Speaker 1: He's a big piece of that fourth line. And in
- 3:20Speaker 1: his absence, that fourth line, the last game in Detroit
- 3:23Speaker 1: really stood out. Seven points between those three. What about
- 3:28Speaker 1: them have you been able to see is the reason
- 3:32Speaker 1: why they work so well together? Freddie Gaudreau finding the offense.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Ben Myers in his second game of the season putting
- 3:38Speaker 1: home a three-point night. Just your thoughts on the fourth
- 3:41Speaker 1: line and how crucial and how impactful they are for
- 3:44Speaker 1: this team.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Well, it's, um, you know, it's a good option for
- 3:47Speaker 2: me to have because with Benny and, uh, Freddie both
- 3:50Speaker 2: being a ready and a lefty face off guy, um,
- 3:53Speaker 2: you know, we can put them out against the other
- 3:55Speaker 2: team's top lines at any point in time.
- 3:57Speaker 3: We don't have to, uh, worry about that.
- 4:00Speaker 2: And actually we do prefer to start them in our
- 4:02Speaker 2: D D zone against the other team's top lines at times.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Winterton's got the speed on the, on the wing as well.
- 4:08Speaker 2: So, um, You know, it's allowed us, you know, at
- 4:11Speaker 2: the start when Sam Miscavige was out, Winterton was moved up.
- 4:14Speaker 3: It's allowed us to put.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Winterton back down and, you know, make that line a very,
- 4:19Speaker 2: very responsible line with some speed. So, you know, the
- 4:23Speaker 2: bottom line is they do things the right way and
- 4:27Speaker 2: they compete. And when you do that, you have a
- 4:31Speaker 2: tendency to have success.
- 4:33Speaker 1: When you have multiple lines like you do that are
- 4:35Speaker 1: capable of chipping in offensively, taking over a game, leading
- 4:38Speaker 1: a game, how does that positively affect your game plan?
- 4:42Speaker 1: Knowing that at any given time I can throw out
- 4:45Speaker 1: any one of my lines and I'm probably going to
- 4:48Speaker 1: have some minimally grade a scoring chances on that shift.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, you know, it's, it just varies.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Obviously we've started the season here with, um, you know,
- 4:58Speaker 2: we've scored six goals in three games.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Uh, Three games, we've had six goals in each game.
- 5:06Speaker 2: But, you know, I mean, we've just got to keep
- 5:10Speaker 2: going and keep, you know, we've taken advantage of our opportunities,
- 5:14Speaker 2: things like that. We've got to continue to go and
- 5:17Speaker 2: continue to grind. It's not going to be six goals
- 5:19Speaker 2: a game here the way the whole season goes, but
- 5:22Speaker 2: certainly it's been nice. And I think, you know, from
- 5:25Speaker 2: that standpoint, you know, what we've done is kind of,
- 5:30Speaker 2: ham and egged it a little bit when our top
- 5:32Speaker 2: lines haven't been going, you know, our third and fourth
- 5:35Speaker 2: line have. So there's been a nice sort of balance
- 5:38Speaker 2: there from that standpoint. You know, we're looking forward to
- 5:41Speaker 2: getting all four lines going tonight.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I mean, a goals four above four does sound pretty
- 5:45Speaker 1: good throughout the rest of the season. Here tonight against
- 5:48Speaker 1: a Capitals team that has a lot of size, how
- 5:51Speaker 1: much will speed for you be a factor in this
- 5:54Speaker 1: game for the Kraken?
- 5:54Speaker 2: Well, we're going to have to use our speed. I
- 5:59Speaker 2: want us to challenge their defense. That's what I wanted
- 6:02Speaker 2: of our hockey team tonight, I think. That's where we
- 6:07Speaker 2: need to maybe gain an edge or an advantage from
- 6:11Speaker 2: that standpoint. Speed is key.
