- 0:37What is going on? Good to see you here.
- 0:40To the place where we think differently daily.
- 0:42What's up, different thinkers? Yeah, I'm really excited.
- 0:45I wanted to do this video for a while because I feel like a lot
- 0:47of people don't understand the difference between an autism
- 0:49meltdown and autism shutdown, And I wanted to kind of really
- 0:51just marry the idea together that there are differences
- 0:55between those. And we're going to we're going
- 0:57to go through that. But first, if you haven't
- 0:58already, make sure to download my free Autism Life Hacks PDF
- 1:02book courtesy of Moi for free at autismhacks.net.
- 1:07Awesome. OK, so what's the difference
- 1:09between awesome meltdowns versus shutdowns, right?
- 1:11Because a lot of people, it really irritates me because a
- 1:14lot of people say that it's a shutdown or or it's a meltdown.
- 1:17A lot of people don't even understand what a meltdown is.
- 1:19And I'll try and leave some more references and links to
- 1:21meltdowns and stuff that other videos I've done specifically on
- 1:24meltdowns in the end slate and in the in the description.
- 1:27But in terms of this video, I really want to cover the
- 1:31difference between a meltdown versus shutdown, because there
- 1:32are differences. And I wanted to just categorise
- 1:36that and actually go through five of the most interesting
- 1:40essentials, really, that you need to know on this.
- 1:42So we're gonna go diving right through that right now.
- 1:45Buckle up and yeah, I hope you enjoy this content.
- 1:49OK, so the first one is an optimum meltdown can be
- 1:52characterised by an emotional outburst and reacting to the end
- 1:58of your century overload, right. So basically when a meltdown
- 2:01happens, you're you're basically kind of lashing out your your
- 2:06emotional emotionally overloaded and emotional.
- 2:08It's just gone right over the edge and like you know, and
- 2:11you're just bursting out with all this kind of emotional
- 2:13overload stuff. Whereas like a shutdown would be
- 2:16something where you are kind of becoming more more, you know,
- 2:19inward and conservative in your effort of emotional approach.
- 2:23So you can obviously see straight off the bat where a
- 2:26meltdown is an outburst or something, but a shutdown is a
- 2:28shutdown or something, which is quite self-explanatory.
- 2:32But in the terms of this, a lot of people don't understand the
- 2:34difference. But obviously This is why we're
- 2:35doing this video. So #2 is when too many
- 2:38communicational inputs are overloaded into an autistic
- 2:42person's mind, they will end up having like a burnout, which
- 2:46seems like as a similar to like meltdown, but it can be noted as
- 2:51feeling of this despair, hopelessness of a situation.
- 2:54So basically when you have, you know, when you have an outburst
- 2:59or like a meltdown outburst which kind of like you you've
- 3:03you have an overload of communication from input and
- 3:08stuff. And rather than kind of like
- 3:09emotionally outbursting like crying or or you know, just
- 3:13being erratic with your behaviour, you kind of almost
- 3:15become like a feeling of despair or hopelessness.
- 3:17The situation kind of topples down on you.
- 3:19And this is kind of how AAI suppose shutdown would be
- 3:25characterized. You kind of like shutting down
- 3:26into into yourself and becoming very kind of like desk.
- 3:30You know you're desperate. You're kind of like I have no,
- 3:32you know, it's a feeling of despair And and I think that's a
- 3:36really good way to kind of like think about, you know, I don't
- 3:40know. It's just like, yeah, it's truly
- 3:42interesting. OK, guys.
- 3:43So #3 is with autism shutdowns, a person experiences the last
- 3:48straw situation and can't control the the environment and
- 3:52they just kind of give up. So within with a meltdown, it's
- 3:55more like they've been pushed to an edge and then like, you know,
- 3:57they've fallen over the edge and their meltdown is kind of like
- 4:00exploded and it's catastrophic and everything just like sucks.
- 4:03But in terms of a shutdown, it's more like they've they've had
- 4:06enough. They've had the last straw and
- 4:07that's it. They feel like they can't do
- 4:09anymore. They can't give anymore.
- 4:10They're just kind of like, Oh my goodness, this is it.
- 4:11No, I've just shut down because I have nothing to give.
- 4:14I have no more. There's nothing else in this
- 4:16kind of like arsenal that I can give to the situation
- 4:18emotionally, socially, whatever the situation.
- 4:21And that's that's the difference from those situations, how they,
- 4:25how they actually come around, which is really interesting.
- 4:27So #4 is that the giving up is a result of the lack of control or
- 4:32lack of understanding of the situation that they are
- 4:34currently presented. So when when someone gives up on
- 4:36a situation in a shutdown, they're giving up because they
- 4:38don't have control over it. And it's not like a, you know,
- 4:42this is where it kind of gets blurred line because a meltdown
- 4:45is that there's no control over the sensory input that's coming
- 4:47in from the situation around you.
- 4:49But it's not like you're trying to control a situation around
- 4:52you and that you just kind of give up and like, you know,
- 4:54resign from it. But that's So a shutdown is when
- 4:57you resign from the situation, but the meltdown is when you
- 4:59have no control, but you, you lose control of your emotions.
- 5:03And a shutdown is just kind of like, you know, admitting
- 5:05defeat, really. That's kind of like the
- 5:06difference when you shut down a meltdown in a position where you
- 5:08lose control in this situation, if that makes sense.
- 5:11I'm sure it does. But if it doesn't make sense,
- 5:13pop me a comment down below. I read every single comment and
- 5:16I'd love to have the discussion with you if you.
- 5:17Yeah, if you have anything to add to this to clear anything
- 5:19up. So #5 is that the person will be
- 5:22quite silent and docile when they're having a a shutdown and
- 5:27there'll be no input from the situation from that moment on.
- 5:29So they won't. So when you're having a
- 5:31meltdown, there'll be lots of input.
- 5:32You'll be like shouting and screaming and crying and all
- 5:34this kind of stuff. And there'll be loads of input
- 5:36to the situation around you, you know, because it's output from
- 5:38you input to the situation. But with a shutdown, there will
- 5:41be no input from you at all to the situation that surrounds you
- 5:45or you're presented in. You'll just completely close up
- 5:47and be self, self inward and should be like, oh, I've had
- 5:49enough. There's no more.
- 5:51There's no, I'm not going to. There's nothing left.
- 5:53That's it. I'm dunzo.
- 5:57I'm out. You know.
- 5:58And you just honestly, we don't even talk.
- 6:00You'll just be completely so kind of like shut down and kind
- 6:03of like inwards. You'll just kind of just it's
- 6:05just not going to happen and that's kind of basically how it
- 6:08works. Now if you found this info
- 6:09really helpful for people and informative, please share it on
- 6:12your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.
