- 0:10Speaker 1: All right, friends, it's the second hour The Morning Show
- 0:12Speaker 1: with Preston Scott.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I'm Preston. He is Jose.
- 0:17Speaker 1: December first. It just it just sounds good, doesn't it.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I know, I know the year has gone by way.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Too fast, but just feels right.
- 0:30Speaker 1: And so we transition now from Operation Thanksgiving to Spirit
- 0:34Speaker 1: of Christmas and I am joined on the program by
- 0:38Speaker 1: the co founder of Orphan Shade. He is our friend,
- 0:40Speaker 1: Jay Shirlow.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Jay, how are you good morning?
- 0:44Speaker 3: How are you sir?
- 0:45Speaker 1: I'm doing terrific all things considered. And I shared the
- 0:49Speaker 1: news with everybody kind of where we are. But for
- 0:52Speaker 1: those that don't know much about Orphan Shade, they've heard
- 0:55Speaker 1: me talk about it a little bit. I thought it
- 0:57Speaker 1: would be useful to kind of reset where this all
- 1:00Speaker 1: began for you and how this program and ministry started.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Sure well, in two thousand and fifteen, I live in Houston, Texas.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I had an interesting character come across my path. The
- 1:20Speaker 3: gentleman was a pastor from the country of Malawi. Malawi's
- 1:26Speaker 3: in Sub Saharan Africa, and I got to know him
- 1:33Speaker 3: and over about a year and a half, we developed
- 1:36Speaker 3: a relationship and as part of that relationship, the Lord
- 1:42Speaker 3: started speaking to both of us about a ministry to
- 1:47Speaker 3: orphans that live in Malawi, and so he when he
- 1:53Speaker 3: departed to go back to his country, he invited me
- 1:56Speaker 3: for a visit and I said, yes, Sir, I'm coming.
- 2:00Speaker 3: And so I had my eyes opened about what life
- 2:05Speaker 3: is like for people in Malawi. It's one of the
- 2:08Speaker 3: poorest countries in the world, has a population of about
- 2:13Speaker 3: twenty million people and about one million orphans, both single
- 2:19Speaker 3: and double orphans. And so what the Lord spoke to
- 2:26Speaker 3: us about was serving young orphan girls who've lost both
- 2:33Speaker 3: of their parents, who live in a rural tribal village,
- 2:40Speaker 3: again very poor. And we would work with our partner,
- 2:46Speaker 3: his name is Prince Kompomo, and we would in a
- 2:51Speaker 3: village where he has a church plant, we would build
- 2:54Speaker 3: a home and the home would be used as a
- 2:58Speaker 3: permanent foster home for little girls between the ages of
- 3:03Speaker 3: five and ten who lost both their parents and their guardian,
- 3:11Speaker 3: usually a grandmother or an aunt, cannot care for them
- 3:15Speaker 3: or will not care for them. And so these are
- 3:18Speaker 3: children who have to usually beg for food to survive
- 3:26Speaker 3: and they have a very rough life at a young age.
- 3:30Speaker 3: So we will bring in eight of these girls from
- 3:33Speaker 3: one village and we will our partner will supply a couple,
- 3:38Speaker 3: a husband and wife, so be the parents. And so
- 3:42Speaker 3: we raised them in this home in the village under
- 3:49Speaker 3: the leadership of the pastor from the local church. So
- 3:52Speaker 3: it's an all Malaalian effort. There are no Americans involved
- 3:59Speaker 3: except my wife, and so it becomes a ministry of
- 4:04Speaker 3: the local church rather than a ministry of ourselves. And
- 4:09Speaker 3: so we've been at that for nine years now. We
- 4:12Speaker 3: have three foster homes operating with a total of twenty
- 4:16Speaker 3: four girls and the first the first home, we opened
- 4:22Speaker 3: in twenty twenty one, and those girls are now mostly teenagers.
- 4:27Speaker 3: And so the Lord has been with us the entire way.
- 4:32Speaker 3: He is supplied in miraculous ways, have many stories, and
- 4:39Speaker 3: so we're very thankful for what God has done through
- 4:46Speaker 3: us and in us through this ministry.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Jay, before we take a quick break here, just real quickly,
- 4:52Speaker 1: the girls come in between the ages of five and ten.
- 4:55Speaker 1: How late how long do they stay till they're eighteen?
- 5:00Speaker 3: So it could be less, could be more. So it
- 5:03Speaker 3: depends on their education path. Okay, so for those girls
- 5:07Speaker 3: who who are academically strong, we will stay with them
- 5:14Speaker 3: throughout their academic pursuits. For those girls who are less academic,
- 5:20Speaker 3: we probably when their age is sort of a teenager
- 5:25Speaker 3: thirteen to fifteen, we will get them trained on a
- 5:29Speaker 3: specific capability through a partner of ours so that they
- 5:35Speaker 3: can earn a living. So that's our role in the process.
- 5:47Speaker 2: With me on the program.
- 5:48Speaker 1: For a couple more segments is Jay Sherlow, co founder
- 5:51Speaker 1: of orphan Shade website Orphanshade dot com. Jay talk about
- 5:55Speaker 1: the three homes that are up and operational kind of
- 5:58Speaker 1: give us a sense of local and give us a
- 6:01Speaker 1: sense of the type of homes that we're talking about
- 6:04Speaker 1: being built and the need to build them the way
- 6:06Speaker 1: that you build them.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Sure, so the first home was our I would say,
- 6:13Speaker 3: complete experiment. We didn't know what we were doing, to
- 6:16Speaker 3: be honest, and so we God delivered a builder that
- 6:25Speaker 3: was in a very unconventional way and they built our home.
- 6:32Speaker 3: That first home in twenty twenty and it was opened
- 6:35Speaker 3: in twenty twenty one, and it's a four bedroom home.
- 6:40Speaker 3: It's about thirteen to fourteen hundred square feet and so
- 6:46Speaker 3: it's oriented to a big family and has an extra
- 6:51Speaker 3: bedroom for visitors. We have people coming from the city
- 6:54Speaker 3: of Blantyre that will come and support the family now
- 6:59Speaker 3: and again. And so over time we built the second
- 7:05Speaker 3: home in another village called Chipolo Polo which means bullet,
- 7:12Speaker 3: interestingly enough, and we started to tweak the house design
- 7:19Speaker 3: and we've made quite a few changes over time, and
- 7:25Speaker 3: that home opened in twenty twenty three. The home that
- 7:30Speaker 3: your listeners will know about is the home in in
- 7:33Speaker 3: Decca and that's north of Blantyre. Blantyre is sort of
- 7:39Speaker 3: the center park, biggest city in the southern region of Malawi,
- 7:43Speaker 3: and so your listeners were extremely generous in twenty twenty
- 7:49Speaker 3: two and twenty twenty three. That home opened in the
- 7:54Speaker 3: summer of twenty twenty four to eight beautiful girls and
- 8:00Speaker 3: a couple who love them very much. That that family
- 8:05Speaker 3: has been very successful. The children are doing very well.
- 8:11Speaker 3: We haven't lost anyone and the girls attend a local
- 8:17Speaker 3: school and are performing very well academically.
- 8:22Speaker 1: The type of homes that are built, I want to
- 8:24Speaker 1: put a kind of paint a picture for everybody. We're
- 8:26Speaker 1: not talking opulence. We're talking about something that is stable
- 8:32Speaker 1: and withstands the elements. Because most of the homes in
- 8:35Speaker 1: these tribal villages are literally homes at last one season, right.
- 8:40Speaker 3: That's correct. So there's there is very challenging weather during
- 8:50Speaker 3: the rainy season, and so so often there are cyclones
- 8:55Speaker 3: that that that come from the Indian Ocean and sort
- 8:59Speaker 3: of stand over Malawi, and it just causes thousands of
- 9:04Speaker 3: thousands of homes that are that are built with UH
- 9:08Speaker 3: with poor materials just to float away. So we we
- 9:12Speaker 3: build a home that's a bit of a tank, I
- 9:15Speaker 3: call it. It is made to last. It has a
- 9:19Speaker 3: very deep foundation UH and it has a very strong
- 9:24Speaker 3: roof made of steel and so but it is not
- 9:28Speaker 3: a fancy home as you as you say it is.
- 9:31Speaker 3: We don't have water service. The water comes from a
- 9:34Speaker 3: local well. We don't have power, so it is it
- 9:40Speaker 3: is built to accommodate that family as best we can.
- 9:46Speaker 3: We're trying to avoid being using the word you use
- 9:50Speaker 3: opulent to the neighbors. We want to be part of
- 9:53Speaker 3: the community, and so so we build that home UH
- 9:58Speaker 3: to last, but it is not always the best home
- 10:03Speaker 3: in the village.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Twenty two minutes past final segment here with Jay Sherlow,
- 10:14Speaker 1: co founder. Orphanshade dot com is the website. This is
- 10:17Speaker 1: not an orphanage it is a home for orphans, and
- 10:20Speaker 1: there is a difference jay very much.
- 10:24Speaker 3: So we have created a family rather than sort of
- 10:31Speaker 3: an institutional orphanage. Orphanages that I have observed do a
- 10:37Speaker 3: really bad job of raising children and there are many
- 10:43Speaker 3: bad effects that the child carries with them when they
- 10:46Speaker 3: enter society at age eighteen. We're creating a family that
- 10:52Speaker 3: stays with that child through their completion of schooling, and
- 10:58Speaker 3: so we want them to experience what it's like to
- 11:02Speaker 3: have a mom and a dad, to experience was like
- 11:05Speaker 3: to have siblings and in their own home have an
- 11:11Speaker 3: environment where they're cared for like a family.
- 11:13Speaker 1: You have ambitious plans for twenty twenty six, tell us
- 11:16Speaker 1: about them.
- 11:18Speaker 3: We do. Our board of directors approved a plan that
- 11:24Speaker 3: I pitched about two months ago, so we already had
- 11:30Speaker 3: approval to build our fourth home starting in December, and
- 11:39Speaker 3: I pitched the concept of scaling our ministry so that
- 11:43Speaker 3: we could reach more children. So we have a plan
- 11:48Speaker 3: to build two additional homes in twenty twenty six, and
- 11:54Speaker 3: one of those is already funded. Sorry. The fourth house
- 11:57Speaker 3: and the fifth house are already funded. The sixth house
- 12:00Speaker 3: is the house that we're seeking funding on and that
- 12:04Speaker 3: house will be will start construction probably in May June
- 12:10Speaker 3: next year, that's when the rainy season is over. And
- 12:15Speaker 3: so that house would be built and opened probably in
- 12:20Speaker 3: November twenty twenty six, and that would be in an
- 12:26Speaker 3: area that we have not we have not operated in,
- 12:29Speaker 3: So this would be a new village and new area
- 12:34Speaker 3: where our partner has multiple church plans, and so we
- 12:39Speaker 3: will We're going to build two homes at the same
- 12:43Speaker 3: time in two different villages, and we think we can
- 12:48Speaker 3: get some economies of scale by doing that and get
- 12:53Speaker 3: the advantage of some time. So that that is our
- 12:57Speaker 3: plan for twenty twenty six.
- 13:00Speaker 1: TV five thousand dollars is the stated goal. And with
- 13:03Speaker 1: that money you're able to secure land and build and
- 13:07Speaker 1: put modest furnishings in these homes for that sum of money.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 13:12Speaker 3: That's correct?
- 13:13Speaker 1: Now where are we with home number six? We started
- 13:16Speaker 1: this effort a couple weeks into November, and where are
- 13:20Speaker 1: we sitting right now?
- 13:24Speaker 3: Thanks to your listeners, we're sitting at a little over
- 13:27Speaker 3: forty three thousand dollars.
- 13:29Speaker 1: All right, So the goal between now and I've set
- 13:33Speaker 1: the goal at our final day for the season of
- 13:37Speaker 1: broadcasting for US is the seventeenth of December, so we
- 13:41Speaker 1: have thirteen broadcast days including today. So if we can
- 13:45Speaker 1: raise one thousand dollars a day or just knock it
- 13:48Speaker 1: out in a few days, we've got just twelve thousand
- 13:52Speaker 1: left to reach our goal of fifty five thousand dollars.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Do I have the math? Right?
- 13:57Speaker 3: You do?
- 13:59Speaker 1: All?
- 13:59Speaker 2: Right?
- 14:00Speaker 1: Tell people the way to give and how to navigate
- 14:04Speaker 1: the website.
- 14:06Speaker 3: So the easiest way to do it is to go
- 14:09Speaker 3: to our website www dot orphanshade dot com and on
- 14:16Speaker 3: the homepage you'll see a donate button in red on
- 14:22Speaker 3: the right hand side on the homepage. You just click
- 14:25Speaker 3: that and then you choose the method that you want
- 14:28Speaker 3: to give. It's very simple.
- 14:30Speaker 1: What is your favorite part of the website that tells
- 14:33Speaker 1: the story the best you think when you go to
- 14:35Speaker 1: orphanshade dot com.
- 14:38Speaker 3: So that there is a video on the homepage that
- 14:43Speaker 3: it's about two and a half minutes long. It's animated
- 14:49Speaker 3: and we did it at pretty low cost, but it
- 14:54Speaker 3: basically tells the story of what we do and how
- 14:57Speaker 3: we do it, and just give the viewer an idea
- 15:03Speaker 3: of how we go about doing this and how we
- 15:06Speaker 3: are melded into the community where we operate.
- 15:11Speaker 1: So the goal here is one little girl at a time,
- 15:14Speaker 1: to raise a generation, to change a nation. That is right, Jay,
- 15:19Speaker 1: thank you for all you and Stacey and Pastor Prince
- 15:22Speaker 1: are doing to help these girls and to help these communities,
- 15:25Speaker 1: these villages, and thanks for letting us be part of it.
- 15:30Speaker 3: And thank you for making this all happen.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Well, we know who to trust with all that and
- 15:36Speaker 1: who to thank for all that. Yep, Jay, thank you.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I pray favor over you and Stacy and safe travels.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Thank you, Thank you very much.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Jay Shirlow with us from Orphanshad orphanshade dot com.
- 15:48Speaker 2: You heard it. We're twelve thousand away. That's it.
- 15:53Speaker 1: We started at zero. We're at forty three thousand dollars.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Praise Jesus.
- 16:01Speaker 1: So if you can help take a bite out of that,
- 16:03Speaker 1: if you're a business that's been blessed, orphanshade dot com
- 16:07Speaker 1: build a house in the dropdown menu, select the amount
- 16:11Speaker 1: you want to give and market to house number six.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Twenty eight minutes past the hour,
