Transcript
- 0:00Tad Eggleston: There we go.
- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody. Welcome back to 22 Panels. My guest today is… I'm gonna hope that I pronounced this right. I think I asked how to pronounce it, at,
- 0:14Tad Eggleston: In Minneapolis, and then I forgot to before we started here. Moritz Yunker?
- 0:19Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah, you gotta…
- 0:20Tad Eggleston: Hey! Perfect.
- 0:21Moritz Junker: Nice.
- 0:23Moritz Junker: Most people don't, you know.
- 0:25Tad Eggleston: Well, you know, I have Norwegian blood, so, you know.
- 0:29Moritz Junker: Nice.
- 0:32Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, Moritz is, trying to think…
- 0:38Tad Eggleston: You might not be the youngest guest we've had, because we had a…
- 0:44Tad Eggleston: guest that was 16 when we talked to him 3 years ago, so I think…
- 0:53Moritz Junker: That's when I was 16, so…
- 0:54Tad Eggleston: -Oh, so I would have to find out… I would have to find out when his birthday was, yeah, so you're right in the wrong…
- 1:01Moritz Junker: Right. So…
- 1:03Tad Eggleston: I have no idea. I haven't talked to him since then. It was right after we started the podcast, and my wife bumped into him at, like, a craft fair where he was selling the…
- 1:13Tad Eggleston: Graphic novel that he'd worked as a…
- 1:16Moritz Junker: What? That's cool.
- 1:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I mean… No offense to him.
- 1:22Tad Eggleston: And I have his later ones, too, and he gets better each time. But you're much more polished than he is, but he decided he wanted to do the full, like, 130-page thing, so he, like, worked…
- 1:37Tad Eggleston: The summer as a lifeguard to raise the money to print.
- 1:41Moritz Junker: Dang, okay.
- 1:42Tad Eggleston: Like, 500 copies of, like, a manga-sized book.
- 1:47Moritz Junker: Shit, okay. So he's prolific, though.
- 1:51Moritz Junker: That's cool. I mean…
- 1:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah, but… but… again, particularly with that first one, you know, he was still learning a lot about panel design and
- 2:03Tad Eggleston: It was very loose.
- 2:05Moritz Junker: Okay.
- 2:07Tad Eggleston: So, so, you know, it's one of those where, where…
- 2:10Moritz Junker: So I'm… I'm…
- 2:11Tad Eggleston: No offense to him.
- 2:12Moritz Junker: Yeah, she's still…
- 2:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no offense to him if he's still listening, and I like his newest book significantly and keep meaning to reach out.
- 2:22Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, your stuff is much more polished than his stuff was. It's clear. And even he talked about it. He'd read some manga, he hadn't actually read a lot of comic books, he hadn't studied how to make comic books, he just had this story in his head, and he started drawing it on paper, and then he made it… so, like.
- 2:39Tad Eggleston: For that, it was amazing, but I look at your stuff, and it's clear that, like, you've studied comics. You may have read Scott McCloud. You certainly have. You know what I mean?
- 2:53Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah. No, I get what you're saying.
- 2:56Tad Eggleston: So, you know, I will definitely get into the books, because I enjoyed them, but I feel like you're young enough that I… and don't take that as a dig, because, like, being young is cool. Being young and, like.
- 3:11Tad Eggleston: Having talent is even cooler, because, like…
- 3:14Tad Eggleston: The craft is the hard part, and you still have lots and lots of time to continue to build your craft. Thanks, yeah.
- 3:21Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 3:22Tad Eggleston: How… how'd you… how'd you get?
- 3:26Tad Eggleston: involved? How'd you… how'd you start making comics for yourself, I assume for your friends, and then stapling them together, and tabling places, and selling them to people?
- 3:35Tad Eggleston: Give me, give me… I mean, I, I normally…
- 3:39Moritz Junker: I kind of described it right there, but…
- 3:41Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah, but I normally ask for the comic's autobiography, and I… and I'm still gonna do that,
- 3:48Tad Eggleston: But you can give me a little bit more bibliography than I normally ask for here. But, like, when did you get into comics?
- 3:57Tad Eggleston: what made you fall in love with that? You know, if you can remember the first comic that you read a lot of, what was that? If you can remember the first comic that you bought, what was that? What was the comic that made you go, oh, wait a minute, I can do this.
- 4:10Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 4:11Tad Eggleston: And then… and then when did you cross the line from, oh, I'd love to make comics when I grow up, to, oh, fuck that, I'm gonna make comics right now?
- 4:20Moritz Junker: Oh, shit, okay. Okay, I think early…
- 4:25Moritz Junker: I mean, I was always… I always drew a lot, as a kid. My… My mom, like, always brought…
- 4:31Moritz Junker: I don't know, gave me, like, crayons and paper and art supplies and stuff, so she really enabled that.
- 4:39Moritz Junker: I don't know, I read a lot of…
- 4:41Tad Eggleston: Only known you were gonna grow up to make no money.
- 4:44Moritz Junker: Yeah, pretty much. Well, you know, she's a social worker, so…
- 4:48Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay.
- 4:49Tad Eggleston: She did know that you were gonna grow up to make no money, but she knew that money wasn't the most important.
- 4:55Moritz Junker: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, so they understand it.
- 5:00Tad Eggleston: As a special ed teacher, I have a great appreciation for social…
- 5:04Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 5:05Tad Eggleston: We're in that same.
- 5:08Moritz Junker: Yeah, but yeah, so I read… I read a lot of Calvin Hobbes as a kid.
- 5:15Tad Eggleston: I love Covenant Hobbs.
- 5:18Moritz Junker: She's into that. I don't think I understood that a lot when I read.
- 5:22Tad Eggleston: Well, you understood parts of it.
- 5:23Moritz Junker: Yeah, definitely.
- 5:25Tad Eggleston: I mean, that's one of the beauties of Calvin and Hobbes, is, like, there's the element that's for the little kid, and then there's the element that's for the parent.
- 5:34Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 5:34Tad Eggleston: It's so completely designed to be read together.
- 5:39Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, it's pretty great.
- 5:41Moritz Junker: It's still probably one of my favorite comics.
- 5:43Tad Eggleston: That's so amazing.
- 5:45Moritz Junker: I read, like…
- 5:47Tad Eggleston: I really hate it every couple of years or so.
- 5:49Moritz Junker: Yeah, my, I read… Like, Bone? Like, Jeff Smith?
- 5:55Moritz Junker: I'm like… I feel pretty fortunate to be…
- 5:59Moritz Junker: like, young enough where that was, like, a book for kids already, like…
- 6:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 6:03Moritz Junker: you know.
- 6:04Tad Eggleston: See, I was a young adult when it was a book for young adults.
- 6:09Moritz Junker: Yeah, that's…
- 6:10Tad Eggleston: Coming out individually.
- 6:11Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 6:12Tad Eggleston: I've talked to them about that transition, because, like, Scholastic called them, and they're like, we want to kick off our kids' lunch.
- 6:21Tad Eggleston: And he's like, he's like, like, you know it's not a kid's book, right? No, we think it'd be great for this market. I've been done with Bone for 10 years. I'm not going back to edit it. You take it as is, or we don't do it.
- 6:33Moritz Junker: Yeah, I know.
- 6:33Tad Eggleston: No, no, it's perfect!
- 6:35Moritz Junker: Yeah, it's like, I don't know, I'm really glad it was, too, like, the same.
- 6:39Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 6:40Moritz Junker: That's how he, like, made.
- 6:41Tad Eggleston: You know what I know.
- 6:42Moritz Junker: Because there were, like, a lot of… like, when I was, like.
- 6:45Moritz Junker: I don't know, in elementary school, I feel like there were a lot of graphic novels and stuff already marketed towards kids, but I kind of…
- 6:53Moritz Junker: I gravitated to Bone, because it was, like, a lot better than a lot of the other stuff for kids, so I don't know, like…
- 6:59Moritz Junker: It's… yeah, it's also still one of my favorites, I think.
- 7:02Tad Eggleston: It should be.
- 7:04Tad Eggleston: And, and now, now you need to put the Billy Ireland cartoon
- 7:09Tad Eggleston: library and museum on your bucket list, because they have page 1 on the wall.
- 7:15Moritz Junker: Oh, cool.
- 7:17Tad Eggleston: Jeff went to Ohio State, so, like, he did work at the Billy Island, and actually this weekend, they're having Cartoon Crossroads, which is his con, the one that he found.
- 7:29Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 7:30Tad Eggleston: Now.
- 7:30Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:31Tad Eggleston: be out there.
- 7:32Moritz Junker: What about this? Okay, cool.
- 7:33Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, no, Jeff is,
- 7:36Tad Eggleston: I don't know if I can quite call Jeff a friend, though he's called me his friend. He's a really cool guy. You should go out there just to meet Jeff.
- 7:43Moritz Junker: Yeah, I do… I do really want to meet him. I… I drove through Columbus one time when I was, like, 10, and I was…
- 7:51Moritz Junker: like, we went to a comic book store, and I was like, oh, they have… why do they have so much bone stuff? And then I was like.
- 7:55Tad Eggleston: Was it the what… was it… was it a laughing ogre? Did they have the big bone statue?
- 8:01Moritz Junker: No, I wouldn't want to do that.
- 8:03Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 8:03Moritz Junker: No, that would have been nice.
- 8:05Tad Eggleston: The Laughing Ogre has, like… A 4-foot-tall phone bone statue.
- 8:11Tad Eggleston: As you walk in.
- 8:14Moritz Junker: Okay, that's awesome.
- 8:17Moritz Junker: Oh, save that.
- 8:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:21Tad Eggleston: Okay, yeah, cool. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:26Moritz Junker: And then, my dad had a bunch of…
- 8:29Moritz Junker: Like, Matt Groening, Life in Hell comics.
- 8:31Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 8:32Moritz Junker: So, I don't know, I've always been really into that, too. That was probably.
- 8:36Tad Eggleston: My wife's the massive Simpsons fan, so I have.
- 8:39Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 8:40Tad Eggleston: I have… I have graining all around me.
- 8:44Moritz Junker: Yeah. Yeah, I'm a big Simpson fan. Like, I guess that was also kind of… like, that's not a comic, but…
- 8:50Moritz Junker: adjacent, and I really like that.
- 8:53Tad Eggleston: Like, cartoons and comics are… are… are… wed together. They're like cousins.
- 9:03Moritz Junker: Yeah. If that makes sense. Yeah, no, I get what you mean.
- 9:07Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:09Tad Eggleston: So, so we go through grading, and… and when…
- 9:15Tad Eggleston: That feels like we're at, like, 10 or 11.
- 9:19Moritz Junker: Oh, probably, like, middle school.
- 9:21Tad Eggleston: I mean, and I understand that 10 or 11 is, like, what?
- 9:25Tad Eggleston: 10 years ago?
- 9:26Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 9:27Tad Eggleston: A little less.
- 9:28Moritz Junker: Like, 8 or 9, I guess, yeah.
- 9:33Tad Eggleston: God, you're not even old enough to drink yet, are you?
- 9:36Moritz Junker: No.
- 9:38Moritz Junker: Of…
- 9:40Tad Eggleston: I've done the math in my head, yeah, 2006, you're only 19.
- 9:46Moritz Junker: Yeah,
- 9:51Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 9:52Tad Eggleston: So, so, like, you're probably getting to about the point where you're developing a habit that's yours rather than passed down from your parents. Do you remember what you bought first?
- 10:03Tad Eggleston: Or if there was a shop that you went to, or anything like that.
- 10:07Moritz Junker: Yeah, I feel like in…
- 10:11Moritz Junker: I kind of took a break from comics in, like, middle school, or, like, not…
- 10:15Tad Eggleston: You went and found girls, was it… No, I mean, that's the story that everybody gives you.
- 10:20Moritz Junker: That was, like…
- 10:21Tad Eggleston: found girls and music and comics weren't cool anymore until I got to college.
- 10:27Moritz Junker: No, that took, like…
- 10:29Tad Eggleston: No, that was, like, that was, that was…
- 10:31Moritz Junker: That was with comics. That was a while later, yeah.
- 10:34Tad Eggleston: We're back with comics.
- 10:35Moritz Junker: I was with comics for… For a while. Like, until a couple months ago, I guess, no.
- 10:43Tad Eggleston: I was just trying to, like, condense the average cartoonist's life into 19 years.
- 10:50Moritz Junker: No, yeah, I get you. No, I like…
- 10:53Moritz Junker: I, you know, I didn't really… I was never into superhero comics, and I felt like…
- 10:58Moritz Junker: stuff I was into. Yeah, it was…
- 11:01Moritz Junker: Yeah, I don't know, like, I like Bowen a lot, and I like…
- 11:03Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 11:04Moritz Junker: the stuff I.
- 11:05Tad Eggleston: Well, and that actually, in some ways, makes you, like, just the wrong age, because at that age that you might have graduated from Bowen into other things.
- 11:14Tad Eggleston: Vertigo was past its heyday, and Image hadn't hit its stride yet.
- 11:20Moritz Junker: Hmm. Okay.
- 11:23Tad Eggleston: Cause, cuz…
- 11:23Moritz Junker: And when did image is tried.
- 11:26Tad Eggleston: I mean, Image was starting to hit a stride by the time you were born, but I would say, like, 2015 is when I… when, like, you would start finding almost everything that you might like. So I guess you were 9, but…
- 11:38Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 11:39Tad Eggleston: So much of it was still, like, too old for you.
- 11:42Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 11:43Tad Eggleston: So there wasn't, like, that easy transition for you. Yeah. You didn't have, like, the dreaming, or even Sandman, I mean, they were all.
- 11:52Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, I shouldn'.
- 11:53Tad Eggleston: But they weren't coming out.
- 11:56Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 11:57Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 11:58Tad Eggleston: Because that was, like, the natural progression for a lot of people.
- 12:02Tad Eggleston: when I was young, was like, oh, I'm just old enough that maybe I can handle some occult in my books. There's this, and there's that. Oh, now my parents won't freak out if there's a little drug use or sex in my books. There's this, and there's that.
- 12:19Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 12:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 12:23Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah, I… I mean, well…
- 12:26Tad Eggleston: Though you also probably… I mean, did you float into manga at all, or were there other YA graphic novels? Because there have been a lot of great YA graphic novels, just…
- 12:37Tad Eggleston: Not necessarily the ones that are the good…
- 12:41Tad Eggleston: Good jump from Bone, because Bone is that epic fantasy.
- 12:45Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 12:47Tad Eggleston: And I think you've got, what, the Dragon something books? My wife's read them and says they're pretty good, but I haven't read them yet. And they feel like, when I glance at them, it's like, oh, like, if you haven't read Bone yet, you read this and you go, oh, this is pretty cool, and then you read Bone.
- 13:04Moritz Junker: Yeah. Well, and I wasn't really that into the fantasy part of what.
- 13:08Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 13:08Moritz Junker: Like, I kinda liked the… Like, the humor and the…
- 13:12Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 13:12Moritz Junker: character, like, the funny little dudes. I read, I read, like, Usagi, the samurai rabbit, a lot.
- 13:20Tad Eggleston: Usagi.
- 13:20Moritz Junker: I like that, still a lot. Yeah.
- 13:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:24Moritz Junker: But, I think middle school, I kinda…
- 13:27Moritz Junker: I didn't really read that many comics. I, like.
- 13:29Moritz Junker: went on the internet more, just, like, looked at, like, animations, and I was kind of… thought maybe I would do, like, stop-motion or something, I was really into that. Like, stop-motion animation, and I was really into…
- 13:42Moritz Junker: That kind of thing, and then…
- 13:43Moritz Junker: when I was, like, 14 or 15, I, like, found, like, a Robert Crone book at Half Price Books.
- 13:49Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 13:50Moritz Junker: And then, like, from there, I got really into, like, The, like, phantographic.
- 13:54Tad Eggleston: Hit it under your bed because you didn't want mom to know… No, they were cool, they didn't care. Okay.
- 14:01Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah, no, so, like, I don't know.
- 14:05Moritz Junker: They were like, oh, yeah, my parents were like, oh yeah, we saw the documentary about him when that came out. I was like, yeah, it's cool. They were like, yeah. No, they're really…
- 14:16Moritz Junker: They're very laid back, I don't know.
- 14:17Tad Eggleston: That's always good. I'm laid back, too, but I always assume that parents aren't, because I had so many parents around me, they're like, you let your son read this? And it's like…
- 14:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Huh?
- 14:28Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 14:29Tad Eggleston: No problem with your kids watching movies with massive amounts of gratuitous violence.
- 14:35Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 14:35Tad Eggleston: I hope he'll have sex in his life, so, like…
- 14:38Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 14:39Tad Eggleston: in a book?
- 14:40Tad Eggleston: We can talk about it.
- 14:42Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 14:42Tad Eggleston: this violence, I'm really kind of hoping. He never does.
- 14:45Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 14:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, goodbye.
- 14:47Moritz Junker: Good point, yeah.
- 14:49Tad Eggleston: I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm willing to have that conversation with him as well, but I'm hoping it's not as important.
- 14:56Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, that's… good point, yeah.
- 15:00Moritz Junker: Yeah, so…
- 15:01Tad Eggleston: That's the single biggest thing that I've never understood about American parents. I've heard that the Europeans are better about that, and, like, more open with…
- 15:10Moritz Junker: And my dad's from Germany, also.
- 15:12Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 15:13Moritz Junker: Maybe that's part of it, I don't know.
- 15:14Tad Eggleston: There you go.
- 15:15Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 15:16Moritz Junker: Yeah, I don't know, they… I don't know, they're…
- 15:18Moritz Junker: They don't really care, they didn't.
- 15:21Moritz Junker: They're into their stuff, I guess.
- 15:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that's good. Yeah. So, Usagi, Robert Crum.
- 15:27Moritz Junker: Yep.
- 15:29Tad Eggleston: When did you start, like, looking for stuff, or I'm assuming that you have. I suddenly realized that you're young enough that I might be asking questions that make you go, oh, this is something I should think of, rather than, oh, this is something that I've done.
- 15:43Tad Eggleston: But, like, you said you stumbled across Robert Crum at Half Price Books. When did you start, like, seeking out specific things, and what were the things that you were looking for?
- 15:54Moritz Junker: I think… So I, like, I read…
- 15:58Moritz Junker: like, yeah, I found a Robert Crumb book, and I read that, and then I was like, I need to read more, like, Chrome books. So I, like, looked for more crumb stuff, and then I'd, like.
- 16:08Moritz Junker: I looked online.
- 16:10Moritz Junker: you know, I'd, like, look up Robert Crum, just, you know, online, see more about him. And then… there was, like, the…
- 16:19Moritz Junker: like, Cartoonist Kayfabe YouTube channel.
- 16:21Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 16:22Moritz Junker: that was still going on. Like, they had a lot of…
- 16:25Moritz Junker: alternative comic stuff, so then I was like, oh, if…
- 16:28Moritz Junker: they're like, if you like Robert Crum, you should check out Dan Klaus, and you should check.
- 16:31Tad Eggleston: Charles Burns. Ed and Jim had impeccable taste. Yeah. And it's funny that you mentioned Dan Klaus and Charles Burns right after we talked about Cartoon Crossroads, because Dan Klaus was there two years ago, and Charles Burns.
- 16:48Moritz Junker: disaster.
- 16:48Tad Eggleston: this year.
- 16:50Moritz Junker: Maybe next year. Sometimes I'll go, I don't know.
- 16:53Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 16:54Tad Eggleston: You gotta figure out if you have any friends at Ohio State that'll let you crash in their dorm.
- 16:58Moritz Junker: I do, I was talking about it, but then it… we didn't have enough time. I don't know. I have a friend who goes to school there, and I was like, oh, can I come hang out with him?
- 17:06Tad Eggleston: Crashing your dorm room?
- 17:07Moritz Junker: Yeah, he was like, yeah, and then I got busy. Yeah, no. I gotta buy a car, too, that's, like, my next…
- 17:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that would make it easier.
- 17:14Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 17:15Moritz Junker: Right now, I take, like.
- 17:16Tad Eggleston: So, I go every year, so, like, I'm just an hour south of you, like, talk to me next year.
- 17:22Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 17:23Tad Eggleston: We're leaving from school this year, and I don't know if I want to change my plans, so unless you can get to Lincolnshire on Thursday, I can't take you this year.
- 17:31Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, that's… that's all good.
- 17:34Tad Eggleston: But, you know, I know peop… I know people from Chicagoland who go, including myself, pretty much every year, so, like, getting theirs, for that matter.
- 17:45Tad Eggleston: I mean, frankly, you should apply to table there every year.
- 17:49Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, it's a good idea.
- 17:51Tad Eggleston: Because it… it is absolutely one of the cons that, like… I don't know exactly how they pick their tables, but, like, you'll have people with
- 18:03Tad Eggleston: Emily Mayer tabled there a couple of years ago. You know Emily, because she.
- 18:08Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:08Tad Eggleston: ran,
- 18:10Tad Eggleston: You know, so, I mean, there are peop… there… there… there are people… there are people with comics that look just like yours, tabling next to Shelley Bond, across the… across the… the way from Dennis Kitchen.
- 18:22Moritz Junker: You know… Nice.
- 18:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 18:24Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:26Tad Eggleston: It really does cover, like, all of the comic scene.
- 18:31Tad Eggleston: And is really inclusive. I, I, like, I think I recommend it even more to young comics people, like, find the way to make the pilgrimage, meet people, see shit.
- 18:42Tad Eggleston: Maybe sell some books. Is that…
- 18:45Moritz Junker: Is that one of your favorite, like, would you rank that?
- 18:47Tad Eggleston: It is my favorite con that I've.
- 18:49Moritz Junker: Okay.
- 18:49Tad Eggleston: I've never been to NYCC, I've never been to HeroesCon down in…
- 18:56Tad Eggleston: North Carolina, and I haven't been up to Rose City, or…
- 19:01Tad Eggleston: Emerald City Con in Portland and Seattle that are supposed to be fantastic.
- 19:09Tad Eggleston: I was at San Diego one of the last years that it was mostly about comics, and I'll put it up against that.
- 19:17Moritz Junker: What year was that, do you think?
- 19:19Tad Eggleston: 98, so, like.
- 19:20Moritz Junker: Oh, okay.
- 19:21Tad Eggleston: Years before you.
- 19:26Tad Eggleston: Kevin Smith was there in support of chasing Amy.
- 19:30Moritz Junker: Okay, I don't know who…
- 19:31Tad Eggleston: Looking at me like, who is Kevin Smith?
- 19:33Moritz Junker: I don't know.
- 19:34Moritz Junker: Sorry.
- 19:39Tad Eggleston: See, when I was your age, there was this movie called Clerks that we all saw.
- 19:44Moritz Junker: Oh, yeah, okay, I've heard of that.
- 19:46Tad Eggleston: That was Kevin Smith.
- 19:48Moritz Junker: Okay, cool.
- 19:50Tad Eggleston: The second movie was Mallrats, and his third movie was Chasing Amy.
- 19:55Moritz Junker: Okay.
- 19:56Moritz Junker: Yeah, I'll… I'll watch those sometime. I don't know.
- 20:00Tad Eggleston: It doesn't actually… that's just… We have our, we have a, do you know the book Saga?
- 20:08Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 20:09Tad Eggleston: So, we have a Saga book club on 22 Panels as well, and we met last night, and one of the members of that group is 22, so she was making us all feel old last night, too, so I feel like I've got two nights in a row… Oh, sorry.
- 20:26Moritz Junker: Existential a couple days.
- 20:27Tad Eggleston: But also going… Oh my god, am I… I…
- 20:33Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 20:34Tad Eggleston: And, like, it's weird, because, you know, because I teach high school, I don't actually think of myself as old most of the time, because…
- 20:41Moritz Junker: True.
- 20:42Tad Eggleston: I'm around young people, I relate pretty well to them, but then every once in a while, it's like, wait a minute, you don't know who Kevin Smith is? And, or, you'll mention somebody that you're like, everybody knows, and I'm like.
- 20:56Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 20:57Moritz Junker: No, that's fine.
- 20:57Tad Eggleston: I mean, I still need to watch,
- 21:01Tad Eggleston: K-Pop Demon Hunter. Everybody's telling me about K-Pop Demon Hunter right now. It's supposed to be really, really good. Oh, so we got.
- 21:08Moritz Junker: I haven't heard of that, yeah, so…
- 21:10Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's the… it's, it's the new Netflix movie, animated.
- 21:14Moritz Junker: It's like the Class of 26 thing.
- 21:16Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:17Moritz Junker: Yeah, too.
- 21:17Tad Eggleston: It's supposed to be…
- 21:19Moritz Junker: Yeah, I can't.
- 21:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Supposed to be absolutely outstanding, you know, even… and, like, one of those rare things where it's, like, high school kids are talking about it, and half of the teachers know it because their 5-year-olds are also nuts for it.
- 21:33Moritz Junker: Okay, interesting.
- 21:35Tad Eggleston: You know, those rare times where, like, the high school kids
- 21:40Tad Eggleston: and their teachers, like, are actually talking about the same thing because the teachers are watching it with their kids, but the high school kids still like it? I mean, it's kind of like… it makes me want to watch it, you know, because.
- 21:53Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, it's…
- 21:54Tad Eggleston: What makes bone amazing.
- 21:55Moritz Junker: Yeah, that's… I was about to say.
- 21:57Tad Eggleston: Is that they are truly ages.
- 22:03Tad Eggleston: Not… not okay for all ages, but interesting to all ages.
- 22:09Tad Eggleston: And that's a much harder thing to do.
- 22:12Tad Eggleston: They're not objectionable to all ages.
- 22:15Tad Eggleston: Plenty of things that aren't objectionable to all ages.
- 22:17Moritz Junker: Yeah, I mean, everything for kids is not objectible.
- 22:20Tad Eggleston: Adults think are dumb, or that fly right over kids' heads.
- 22:27Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, yeah, yeah.
- 22:29Moritz Junker: I get you. I mean…
- 22:30Tad Eggleston: Half the rom-coms out there don't actually have anything in them that's objectionable for kids.
- 22:36Moritz Junker: Yeah, but they're, like, boring for kids.
- 22:38Tad Eggleston: Yeah, they just, like, what 5-year-old would have any interest whatsoever in, like, a Hallmark Channel movie?
- 22:47Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 22:48Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, I get you.
- 22:50Tad Eggleston: I'd be like, why are they just talking?
- 22:53Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 22:56Moritz Junker: Yeah, well, you know, that's actually…
- 23:00Moritz Junker: When I first saw, like, Dan Cloud's comics, I kind of wasn't… I didn't get it, because I was like, everyone was stiff, and they're just like…
- 23:07Moritz Junker: Walking around.
- 23:09Tad Eggleston: Damn.
- 23:09Moritz Junker: Again, Oz is kind of…
- 23:11Tad Eggleston: He's… he… he's sometimes an acquired taste. He… Yeah. And he certainly…
- 23:18Tad Eggleston: you have to have a little bit of experience. I don't think it's strictly an age thing, and I don't even think it has to be life experience. I think it can be comic experience, but you gotta be able to look at it and, like.
- 23:32Tad Eggleston: have an idea of where he's coming from, for it to really, really sink in. I know that the first time I read Dan Klaus, I'm like, what's the big deal?
- 23:42Tad Eggleston: And I was, like, 20-something. I was older than you.
- 23:45Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 23:45Tad Eggleston: time I read Dan Klaus, and the first time I read Dan Klaus, I was like, what's the big deal?
- 23:50Tad Eggleston: Whereas…
- 23:54Tad Eggleston: And I started to realize it was a bigger deal. It was actually while I was sitting waiting for him to talk, reading his newest book, which some of his fans are like, it's okay.
- 24:03Tad Eggleston: The deadline.
- 24:04Moritz Junker: Which one was it?
- 24:05Tad Eggleston: What is the most one? Is it on my shelf over there?
- 24:09Tad Eggleston: If it is, I can't quite see it.
- 24:13Tad Eggleston: Monica.
- 24:14Moritz Junker: Oh, okay.
- 24:15Tad Eggleston: The president…
- 24:16Moritz Junker: First time you read?
- 24:18Tad Eggleston: No, it wasn't.
- 24:18Moritz Junker: This is the first time I…
- 24:19Tad Eggleston: read, because I'd read 8 Ball, I'd read.
- 24:22Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:23Tad Eggleston: Wilson, I just hadn't… I hadn't gone.
- 24:25Moritz Junker: You hadn't gotten into it until, like, a couple years ago. Okay, yeah, I get you.
- 24:29Tad Eggleston: So I'm sit… I'm literally sitting in the auditorium at CXC, waiting for.
- 24:34Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 24:35Tad Eggleston: come on stage, and I, you know, we were able to buy… it was, like, actually two weeks before Monica came out, but Fanagraphics had them at CXC, so I bought a copy. Sitting there reading, and I'm like, oh, I get it now.
- 24:47Moritz Junker: Nice, okay. Yeah, so that really took a while.
- 24:50Tad Eggleston: And, like, I came home, and I re-read all my Dan Klaus.
- 24:55Moritz Junker: Nice, nice.
- 24:57Tad Eggleston: I still haven't had that moment with Chris Wearer.
- 25:00Tad Eggleston: Chris Weir?
- 25:01Moritz Junker: Okay, really?
- 25:02Tad Eggleston: Like, he's like… like, I'm just…
- 25:06Tad Eggleston: And I haven't revisited him recently.
- 25:10Tad Eggleston: You know, but I try to… I have a lot of his stuff, and I don't dislike any of it.
- 25:15Tad Eggleston: But he always feels like he's just on the tip of my understanding. It's like, you know, like that song that you listen to, and it's like, someday this is gonna unlock, and I'm gonna think that these lyrics are amazing, but right now, I don't understand
- 25:34Tad Eggleston: why I like this.
- 25:36Tad Eggleston: Okay. Which makes me wonder if I even like it.
- 25:41Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 25:42Tad Eggleston: Don't know what I…
- 25:45Moritz Junker: I, I, I can…
- 25:46Tad Eggleston: And there's these people over here that think it's, like, godlike, and I really don't get what they're looking at yet.
- 25:53Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 25:54Moritz Junker: Yeah, I feel like I've, like,
- 25:58Moritz Junker: you know, I haven't really read anything that much in the last, like, year where I've been, like, really… well, I don't know, maybe that's not true. I don't know.
- 26:06Moritz Junker: I feel like, since…
- 26:08Moritz Junker: being out of high school and stuff, I've read a lot less comics, and I haven't, like, super connected
- 26:12Moritz Junker: with a thing.
- 26:13Tad Eggleston: What? Because you're, like, a college student, and have…
- 26:17Moritz Junker: Dropout.
- 26:18Tad Eggleston: homework, and it…
- 26:19Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 26:20Tad Eggleston: jobs, and, like… Yeah. To get in the way.
- 26:25Moritz Junker: to do. Yeah, I know. That's actually way better.
- 26:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:30Moritz Junker: And I'm actually, like, kind of… I mean, I'm okay with it, but it's like… I, I give it…
- 26:34Tad Eggleston: Back into them.
- 26:35Moritz Junker: You gotta be in the right kind of mood and headspace to really… -
- 26:40Moritz Junker: Read them, and…
- 26:41Tad Eggleston: And I think that's the other problem, is, like.
- 26:44Tad Eggleston: I have trouble slowing down with comics, because I read so many comics.
- 26:49Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 26:50Tad Eggleston: And particularly with the podcast, I make myself read so many comics so that I can talk about them, or interview people about them, or plug the shit out of them.
- 27:00Tad Eggleston: Oh, man.
- 27:02Tad Eggleston: That, like, those comics that are best enjoyed slowly…
- 27:06Tad Eggleston: I so rarely manage to, like, Yeah, I like that.
- 27:10Moritz Junker: random. Yeah.
- 27:13Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, I get that.
- 27:14Tad Eggleston: I try to… I try to… I try to make a point to from time to time, particularly because there… like, every once in a while, I'll read a book.
- 27:21Tad Eggleston: Meredith McLaren's new one, Meat Eaters, which is even, like, technically a YA book.
- 27:29Tad Eggleston: like, I got an advance PDF, and I, like, read it, and read it again, and read it again, and when I finally got the physical copy, it's like, I read it again, and then I read it really slowly.
- 27:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Because, like, Meredith McLaren's one of my favorite artists to begin with, and, like, the things that she did in this book, it, like…
- 27:53Tad Eggleston: Can't even
- 27:55Tad Eggleston: Quite describe them, except that, like, she took everything that made her great before, and just upped it a notch.
- 28:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah, you know, she started doing things…
- 28:04Tad Eggleston: like, the very first page, like, there's two panels on the first page, and it's something that you see in film from time to time, and you sometimes see in photo arrays, but I'm not certain I'd ever seen it at a comic, where, like.
- 28:18Tad Eggleston: The fir- they're essentially the same panel, except the first panel, it's focused on the background, and the foreground is, like…
- 28:26Tad Eggleston: fuzzy, the way it is when you focus a camera on the background. The second panel is reversed. The background has been… and it's focused on that, so you're like… Sure.
- 28:36Moritz Junker: It's a lot of…
- 28:37Tad Eggleston: And I'm sitting there going.
- 28:40Tad Eggleston: It's such a simple… and that's one of the beauties of comics. So many of the things that will, like, blow us away, like, you sit back going.
- 28:47Tad Eggleston: I have no idea why nobody thought of this before, but I don't think anybody thought of this before.
- 28:54Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 28:56Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, I get that.
- 28:59Moritz Junker: So…
- 29:01Tad Eggleston: Go ahead.
- 29:02Moritz Junker: Or, I was gonna say, I've been, like…
- 29:04Moritz Junker: I tried to read that book, My Favorite Thing is Monsters, like, a couple times.
- 29:08Tad Eggleston: Oh my god.
- 29:08Moritz Junker: And I haven't… I haven't been able to, like, get very far. I've, like…
- 29:13Tad Eggleston: Well, that's… I don't know.
- 29:14Moritz Junker: It's… that's, like, too daunting right now. That's, like, one of those…
- 29:17Tad Eggleston: book.
- 29:18Moritz Junker: I see why everyone likes it, because it's, like, beautiful, and it looks.
- 29:21Tad Eggleston: But I also, like, the first time I read it.
- 29:24Tad Eggleston: I managed to read the entire thing during a school day while teaching, and then went home and read it again.
- 29:31Moritz Junker: Yeah, damn.
- 29:32Tad Eggleston: I usually spent all day reading Volume 1 twice.
- 29:36Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 29:38Moritz Junker: I mean, that's what I did in high school, that's like… I used to have that time, that was great. I don't know.
- 29:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Emil's amazing, too.
- 29:50Moritz Junker: Yeah, she doesn't… does she live in Milwaukee or something?
- 29:53Tad Eggleston: She does.
- 29:53Moritz Junker: Okay.
- 29:54Tad Eggleston: I interviewed her at Lion's Tooth.
- 29:57Moritz Junker: Okay, yeah, I think Chris talked about that.
- 29:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah. In fact, I need to email her, because I have, I have a couple of copies of My Favorite Thing is Monsters that she's supposed to stop in and sign for my brother.
- 30:09Moritz Junker: Oh, sweet.
- 30:10Tad Eggleston: I maybe shouldn't have said that on, hi, Emil, if you're listening. That's your reminder, if you're listening.
- 30:16Tad Eggleston: More of the books there.
- 30:18Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 30:19Moritz Junker: I promise, I'll read your book.
- 30:22Moritz Junker: Someday.
- 30:23Tad Eggleston: So, I'm certain you will. I mean, it's…
- 30:27Tad Eggleston: it's a… you're right, it's a beautiful book, but it can… I mean, I know lots of people who find it daunting, and I know that, like, that one grabbed me, but there are other books of that type that, like, it takes me 2 or 3 times picking them up before I really dive in, because, like…
- 30:46Tad Eggleston: Again, they're just… they're not fast reads, they're not easy reads, and they're so beautiful that you want to spend more time with them than… you both want to spend, like, an hour with each page, and you want to get to the next page as fast as possible, because the story is so.
- 31:03Moritz Junker: The story is cool. Yeah, I think also, like, books like… books like that, and…
- 31:09Moritz Junker: books like Chris Ware's stuff, like.
- 31:11Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 31:12Moritz Junker: They're really gorgeous, like, amazing books that
- 31:16Moritz Junker: I don't, like, you know, they… like, you read them and you get really excited about making comics and stuff, but I think there is also, like.
- 31:22Moritz Junker: They're not kind of laid out, usually, traditionally, and that can kind of… each page is kind of like a puzzle.
- 31:27Tad Eggleston: I mean, where is…
- 31:28Moritz Junker: It's a little less.
- 31:29Tad Eggleston: That, like, with 10 times as many panels.
- 31:32Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 31:33Tad Eggleston: But, and I don't know, but…
- 31:35Moritz Junker: And then, like… I don't know, I felt like my favorite thing is monsters, like, it's like…
- 31:40Tad Eggleston: Oh, my favorite thing is mine.
- 31:41Moritz Junker: The page is, like, a beautiful illustration, which is amazing, but also then it's, like…
- 31:47Tad Eggleston: You gotta figure out how to read it, and oftentimes… it in, like.
- 31:51Tad Eggleston: Oftentimes, it doesn't matter. I mean, that's the nice thing. Sometimes it doesn't matter which order you read it in.
- 31:57Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 31:58Tad Eggleston: Because it really is set up like the journal that it's made out to be.
- 32:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah. And you know, so, talk to me about making comics.
- 32:09Tad Eggleston: I mean, the ones I've read are Pole Position, which was both disturbing and fucking hilarious.
- 32:17Tad Eggleston: The Thrills of Mediocrity, issue 6. I love those characters, so, like, I would happily pay you money to read Issues 1 through 5 and 5 and a half.
- 32:29Tad Eggleston: Sounds good.
- 32:30Tad Eggleston: And, the one that, like, really caught my attention, and I literally read on the… the steps, of…
- 32:39Tad Eggleston: insert name was… was the… the Devil Draws at Dawn.
- 32:44Tad Eggleston: With the… That's funny.
- 32:46Moritz Junker: Why do you say that, because I…
- 32:48Tad Eggleston: Biggest gun in the West.
- 32:50Moritz Junker: It's probably the one I put the least thought into out of those three.
- 32:54Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean, sometimes that's the way it works.
- 32:57Tad Eggleston: I, I love them all.
- 32:59Tad Eggleston: But, like… you know, I almost like the way that this is… just silly.
- 33:08Tad Eggleston: But well-crafted silly.
- 33:10Moritz Junker: Thank you, yeah, I…
- 33:11Tad Eggleston: Absolutely.
- 33:12Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 33:14Moritz Junker: I mean, I'm very proud of that book, I like it, but…
- 33:16Tad Eggleston: Like, do you know the artist Elsa Chardier?
- 33:21Moritz Junker: No.
- 33:23Tad Eggleston: Elsa Chartier did a book called November with Matt Fraction.
- 33:28Tad Eggleston: She did a book called, love Everlasting with Tom King.
- 33:36Tad Eggleston: She's currently doing, The City Beneath Her Feet with James Tynion, but her first book… was called…
- 33:48Tad Eggleston: Oh, why can't I remember? Let me look her up really quick.
- 33:54Tad Eggleston: Infinity something.
- 33:57Tad Eggleston: And it was, like, this time travel thing.
- 34:01Tad Eggleston: that, like, I mean, she was literally in her 20s, teaching herself to draw and draw comics at the same time.
- 34:09Tad Eggleston: And, like, her talent adage is disgusting.
- 34:14Tad Eggleston: To, you know…
- 34:16Tad Eggleston: If you believe her story, which I totally do, because I've had it backed up enough places where she literally went from trying to be an actress to…
- 34:27Tad Eggleston: deciding to make comics, teach yourself how, and, like, in the span of a year or so, became…
- 34:36Tad Eggleston: who she is.
- 34:37Moritz Junker: Really good.
- 34:39Tad Eggleston: Well, and not just really good, but, like, she grasps every… every ounce of the storytelling.
- 34:47Tad Eggleston: You know, so the page layouts are phenomenal, the acting of the characters is phenomenal,
- 34:55Tad Eggleston: You know, you can tell that she's absolutely a student of comics, and you can tell that
- 35:03Tad Eggleston: she also kind of just does her own thing, too. You know, I mean, she's… she's her… the infinite loop is what it was called. But so, when I was talking to her the first time.
- 35:11Tad Eggleston: I was asking her how much she planned out, she… like, she talked about how, for most of them, she's, like, meticulous in terms of planning them out, except for the infinite loop, where she just kind of shot from the hip, because it was her first book, and she was just… and, like, that's crazy, because, like.
- 35:28Tad Eggleston: The Infinite Loop does some of the coolest things in comics I've ever seen, so, like, the idea that you were just…
- 35:38Tad Eggleston: Winging it? Jamming.
- 35:39Moritz Junker: Yeah. Yeah, I mean, I do…
- 35:42Tad Eggleston: Crazy.
- 35:43Moritz Junker: I never, you know, I never, like, write a script or anything, I do just.
- 35:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 35:47Moritz Junker: I just draw each page, like, fully, and then I go to the next page. Yeah.
- 35:51Moritz Junker: Yeah, I don't know.
- 35:53Moritz Junker: But… I, I don't know, I get, like…
- 35:56Tad Eggleston: No, I, you know.
- 35:57Moritz Junker: Like, I drew the cowboy one, like, the devil draws at Dawn, I drew that just in, like, a notebook, because I was like…
- 36:03Moritz Junker: I was, like, in school, and I was, like, in college, and I was like.
- 36:06Tad Eggleston: Wow.
- 36:07Moritz Junker: this, like… I mean, I… wait, I probably have the…
- 36:10Moritz Junker: I can grab the book I drew it in.
- 36:13Tad Eggleston: I, I gotta ask, just because it, it, like…
- 36:20Tad Eggleston: I… I mean, the two… the two main parts of silliness that get played off of here is… like…
- 36:30Tad Eggleston: Your big gun kid is a kid whose gun is 5 times as big as he is.
- 36:37Tad Eggleston: And his Indian guide is… is a… is an Asian Indian…
- 36:43Moritz Junker: Yes.
- 36:43Tad Eggleston: So… so that's established on, like, page 1, like, what…
- 36:49Tad Eggleston: I mean, was that just, like, the conceit that you jumped off from and went?
- 36:53Moritz Junker: Yes, yes.
- 36:53Tad Eggleston: Huh?
- 36:54Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, I just… Thought it was funny, I don't… that was kind of the whole…
- 36:59Moritz Junker: Like, here, if you… this is, like, the…
- 37:01Tad Eggleston: Oh, wow.
- 37:02Moritz Junker: Like, the original pages… it's, like, all in this…
- 37:05Tad Eggleston: Oh, wow.
- 37:07Tad Eggleston: I love it.
- 37:10Moritz Junker: Went, page by page.
- 37:12Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's amazing.
- 37:14Moritz Junker: It's like…
- 37:16Tad Eggleston: Okay, like, now seeing that you did it all, and, like, that's in fully finished form, like, how do you work in the pages? Do you…
- 37:25Tad Eggleston: like, what level of penciling do you do? When do you start inking? Like, talk to me about tools, talk to me about process, particularly if you're doing it in class, I want to know how this comes about.
- 37:39Moritz Junker: Well, it was, you know, it was mostly just, like, lectures, like, you know, I was in, like, college, this…
- 37:45Tad Eggleston: No, I understand.
- 37:46Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 37:46Tad Eggleston: I understand that it was probably classes that you could, like, hide a little bit more, but still, you're not, like, bringing in a light table and…
- 37:59Moritz Junker: Yeah, I mean, yeah, Millions.
- 38:01Tad Eggleston: And, like.
- 38:01Moritz Junker: Pretty simple.
- 38:02Tad Eggleston: A whole supply of brushes and a jar of India ink.
- 38:06Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, I did, I… like, I had, like, the…
- 38:11Moritz Junker: Anyway, like, I have this, like, pencil pouch, this is kind of where everything is in. Okay, I have one of those.
- 38:16Moritz Junker: Yeah, I'm using… Like, a mechanical pencil, I guess, and, like, these Uniball pens.
- 38:23Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 38:24Moritz Junker: For most of the inking. And then, for the cowboy, like, for that one, I had these, like, alcohol markers that I used.
- 38:31Tad Eggleston: Because I was about to say, you get… I mean, if you were just using… if you were just using Uniball, you got some really great craze.
- 38:40Moritz Junker: Oh, well, thanks. Yeah, that would be fun.
- 38:42Tad Eggleston: But the alcohol markers make way more sense.
- 38:45Moritz Junker: Yeah, and then I did, like,
- 38:48Moritz Junker: I would do the solid blacks, like, I would do those, like, when I got back to, like, my dorm, and then I would, like, use a Russian.
- 38:55Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 38:55Moritz Junker: But… and then the cover, I did, like, actual ink wash, like…
- 38:59Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah.
- 39:00Moritz Junker: But.
- 39:01Tad Eggleston: I mean, you gotta make the cover cool.
- 39:03Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 39:04Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 39:05Moritz Junker: You made everything else cool.
- 39:07Moritz Junker: Oh, thanks.
- 39:08Tad Eggleston: I mean, overall… But that was actually…
- 39:11Tad Eggleston: I mean, this is another place that I can tell that you're learning, but you're also, like…
- 39:17Tad Eggleston: significantly more accomplished than most people making comics at your level with it. Talk to me about the work that you do on lettering, because you fit your balloons pretty well, you're very readable, and you're actually… well, you don't get, like.
- 39:41Tad Eggleston: you don't have, like, lots and lots of different font stuff. You do do things for emphasis.
- 39:48Tad Eggleston: with your letters, you know, I'm just looking at a page, and like, you can… you can…
- 39:56Tad Eggleston: You've got bolder lettering, you've got… quieter lettering.
- 40:00Tad Eggleston: You know, you can feel emotions from the boxes.
- 40:04Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 40:05Tad Eggleston: I like letterers. I've talked to a bunch of letterers on the show, so I'm always… and again, like, we should… we'll talk in a minute about, you know, what kind of formal training and or what… what books you've read to try to hone your craft, but first, like, just tell me, like, how do you approach the… the… the lettering when you're… when you're…
- 40:26Tad Eggleston: Telling the story, because again, like, the single biggest issue you see in a lot of…
- 40:32Tad Eggleston: self-published super indie comics is like.
- 40:36Moritz Junker: read them.
- 40:38Tad Eggleston: Well, even if…
- 40:39Moritz Junker: the words are… I mean, don'.
- 40:41Tad Eggleston: Don't get me wrong, that's also a problem.
- 40:43Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 40:43Tad Eggleston: But the… but the words are crammed into bubbles, you know?
- 40:47Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 40:49Moritz Junker: No, I get that, yeah.
- 40:52Moritz Junker: No, that's what I meant, yeah. I.
- 40:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 40:55Tad Eggleston: Or hanging out of bubbles, or…
- 40:59Moritz Junker: I think.
- 41:00Tad Eggleston: Certainly more inconsistent than you.
- 41:03Moritz Junker: Yeah, I don't know, I feel like that's something.
- 41:05Tad Eggleston: And I assume you're hand-lettering, because it looks hand-lettered.
- 41:08Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 41:09Moritz Junker: You know, I have a… I didn't use it on that comic, because it was in the notebook, but I mean, I have the, like, Ames guide.
- 41:16Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 41:17Moritz Junker: Like everyone, I don't know, I feel like I've…
- 41:21Moritz Junker: I'd write the words first and draw the bubble around it. I feel like that…
- 41:26Tad Eggleston: I mean, that's obviously a smart thing to do.
- 41:28Moritz Junker: We should do it.
- 41:29Tad Eggleston: You also said you don't script, so, like…
- 41:33Moritz Junker: You know, I mean, like… Cause you don't…
- 41:35Tad Eggleston: I don't like…
- 41:36Moritz Junker: I write out, like, a screenplay. I'm like, this is gonna.
- 41:38Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 41:39Moritz Junker: to my story. When I go to the page, you know, I pencil the whole page before I ink the page, so I figure out where everything's gonna be placed before, and a lot of the times, if I know the beats of each panel, if I'm like, they're gonna talk here, this is gonna be a reaction, they're gonna talk here, like, I figure that out as I get to the page, but I…
- 41:56Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 41:57Moritz Junker: you know, I, like, kind of put the text down before I do a lot of the drawings, and I'm like…
- 42:00Tad Eggleston: Well, but also, I mean, one of…
- 42:06Tad Eggleston: I mean, actually, it's particularly funny, because some of the other comics that you put in, you know, in this one have many of the issues that you don't have, so… Sure. So, like, while I enjoy all of the guest comics in here, they also very much serve to show how.
- 42:29Moritz Junker: Okay, well, you know, a lot of them were my friends that had never made a comic before.
- 42:32Tad Eggleston: No offense to any of them.
- 42:34Tad Eggleston: Because they all show skill.
- 42:36Moritz Junker: I really appreciate it.
- 42:38Tad Eggleston: And they're all interesting. But, like…
- 42:45Tad Eggleston: I mean, Paul Court Johns was really good.
- 42:48Moritz Junker: Yeah, he, he, he does stuff.
- 42:51Tad Eggleston: It has, it has, like, a different vibe from yours, but it, you know, it's somebody who really knows how to do it.
- 42:59Moritz Junker: Yeah, he's a really… he's a good cartoonist. He's, like, pretty polished, and he… he has his own stuff, you should check his stuff out, Report John on Instagram. He's…
- 43:07Tad Eggleston: We'll have to…
- 43:08Moritz Junker: guy. Yeah. I, like, know him through the internet, though. I don't… like, everyone else was people I, like, knew personally that I got to.
- 43:14Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 43:15Moritz Junker: Have this subject.
- 43:15Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, that's always fun.
- 43:17Tad Eggleston: You can… when you can wind up having somebody that you only kind of know be willing to jump in on a project with you.
- 43:24Moritz Junker: Yeah, he's… he's really cool. He's been, like…
- 43:27Moritz Junker: He's been, like, kinda looking at my stuff for…
- 43:31Moritz Junker: like, probably the last 4 years… like, ever since I kind of started publishing it and putting stuff online, it's been really, like, supportive and nice, and…
- 43:38Moritz Junker: Yeah, it's cool.
- 43:39Moritz Junker: So cool, dude.
- 43:41Tad Eggleston: It has a comic named The Fart.
- 43:44Tad Eggleston: It's my time.
- 43:44Moritz Junker: He's great.
- 43:48Tad Eggleston: My kind of guy.
- 43:50Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 43:51Tad Eggleston: I lost my train of thought.
- 43:59Tad Eggleston: So… actually, since I lost my training, I thought, let's… I mean, again, I mean, I don't want to discount the possibility that you're an idiot savant, but…
- 44:10Moritz Junker: But…
- 44:12Tad Eggleston: I have also read enough comics from young people and or just relatively new cartoonists that I can generally tell the difference between the people who
- 44:24Tad Eggleston: Are making comics to then learn how to make comics, and those who have already started
- 44:30Tad Eggleston: Learning how to make comics outside of…
- 44:33Tad Eggleston: just making them. So, so, I'm assuming…
- 44:39Tad Eggleston: that you've done some reading, or watched some YouTube videos, or… or taken some classes, talk to me about ways that you've,
- 44:48Tad Eggleston: honed your car.
- 44:49Moritz Junker: training stuff. Yeah, I.
- 44:52Tad Eggleston: Training or self-training.
- 44:54Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 44:54Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 44:55Moritz Junker: You know, I'd say I'm probably mostly self-training. Like, I… I read a lot of…
- 45:01Moritz Junker: I think mostly I just, like, read a lot of comics, like, I read a lot of comics. And I draw a lot, like, I draw…
- 45:07Moritz Junker: just a lot, and I always have drawn a lot, so I think that's… Kind of, like, 80% of…
- 45:13Moritz Junker: I don't know.
- 45:14Tad Eggleston: Like, if you… I guess what I'm asking.
- 45:17Moritz Junker: Like, I've read stuff that's, like.
- 45:20Tad Eggleston: The comics and…
- 45:20Moritz Junker: Cloud.
- 45:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that was what I was about to say. There's reading understanding comics, or there's reading Shelley Bond's, Filth and Grammar has become really, really popular among the…
- 45:34Tad Eggleston: indie comic scene. Her book on editing, but it also… I mean, really, in a lot of ways, it's like, how to do all the parts of comics except the drawing.
- 45:43Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 45:45Moritz Junker: I think, also, like, watching the, like, cartoonist Kayfabe when that was going on, I think that was pretty helpful, because they were, like.
- 45:53Tad Eggleston: I mean, they were both…
- 45:54Moritz Junker: They were both cartoonists, so they talk about it…
- 45:56Tad Eggleston: Cartoonists themselves, yeah.
- 45:58Moritz Junker: Yeah, no, like, and they talk about it as, like, oh, he's doing this, but, like, I think he probably used that kind of tool to…
- 46:06Moritz Junker: I don't know, like, stuff like that, where I was like, oh, okay, I… like, a lot of insider info you wouldn't get from…
- 46:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah, absolutely.
- 46:13Moritz Junker: Like, reading it yourself. Right.
- 46:15Tad Eggleston: Right, and that was the type of stuff I was asking about.
- 46:18Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 46:19Moritz Junker: So that definitely.
- 46:20Tad Eggleston: Particularly once you get to a certain point, you start deconstructing comics yourself, but… but, like… Unless…
- 46:27Tad Eggleston: Like, I wanna, yeah, I wanna give a lot of learning how to do that. I give a lot of.
- 46:31Moritz Junker: credit to Ed Pisco or Jim Rugg for, like, being really…
- 46:37Moritz Junker: Yeah, just, like, mindful about it when… like, probably making me be more mindful about it at an age when I wouldn't have been otherwise, like.
- 46:44Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 46:45Moritz Junker: Because, like, I was, like, 15 or 16 watching them.
- 46:47Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 46:47Moritz Junker: Like, I wouldn't…
- 46:48Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 46:48Moritz Junker: Probably think to be that, like, oh, how would they figure that out?
- 46:52Tad Eggleston: Oh, I will be the first to admit that I…
- 46:56Moritz Junker: I completely undervalued artists in comics before…
- 47:00Tad Eggleston: I started this podcast. It's not that I didn't value them, but I didn't… I didn't give them their due as storytellers.
- 47:08Tad Eggleston: I've started noticing so much more of how much a page layout matters, how much…
- 47:16Tad Eggleston: body language matters, how much facial expressions matter, you know, versus just, hey, we've got words, and we need something to be saying the words. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:28Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 47:29Tad Eggleston: So, like… and I don't make comics, and I'm… I'm much more of a word guy, so that's my excuse, but… but… it's still…
- 47:39Tad Eggleston: It's one of those things where the more… the more you read, people…
- 47:44Tad Eggleston: Who know their shit breaking it down, or watch people who know their shit breaking it down, or talk to people who know their shit.
- 47:53Moritz Junker: freaking me.
- 47:53Tad Eggleston: down.
- 47:54Tad Eggleston: You just, you wind up learning so, so much.
- 47:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 48:02Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 48:03Moritz Junker: And I took,
- 48:05Moritz Junker: I didn't take that many art classes, like, in high school or anything, but I did take, like.
- 48:10Moritz Junker: I think, like, 4 classes with this guy, Philip,
- 48:15Moritz Junker: Salmon, he's, like, a guy who lives in Madison, he did, like, pretty, like.
- 48:20Moritz Junker: Like, technical, like, painting and illustration?
- 48:24Moritz Junker: And…
- 48:26Moritz Junker: I just, like… I think I was, like, 15, and I took, like, 4 classes with him, and he kind of just helped me be like, oh, this is how, like, light works, this is how…
- 48:35Moritz Junker: perspectives and.
- 48:35Tad Eggleston: Good thing to have.
- 48:37Moritz Junker: Yeah, like, good, like, just kind of illustration.
- 48:40Moritz Junker: tips, and then I took a semester of, like, art. Like, I went to college.
- 48:47Moritz Junker: like, last fall, UW-Milwaukee, to study
- 48:52Moritz Junker: like, art, and then I did that for a semester, and then I switched to English, and then I dropped out, so…
- 48:58Moritz Junker: It's like… Like, I feel like I haven't taken that much formal training, but, like, I…
- 49:02Moritz Junker: I have, like, like, a lot of stuff online, and a lot of…
- 49:06Tad Eggleston: Yeah, with, like, the… And I… yeah, I mean, I think… I think a lot of cartoonists don't have…
- 49:16Tad Eggleston: formal, formal training. I mean, it's really only in your lifetime that there's been much formal training.
- 49:24Tad Eggleston: Available.
- 49:25Moritz Junker: Yeah, I couldn't.
- 49:26Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 49:27Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:28Tad Eggleston: You know,
- 49:31Tad Eggleston: You know, it used to be, you draw out comics, so you haven't… you're not good enough for advertising.
- 49:36Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 49:37Tad Eggleston: Jimmy, you wanna draw comics? What the hell is wrong with you?
- 49:41Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 49:42Tad Eggleston: I mean, that's before my time, but, you know.
- 49:46Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 49:46Tad Eggleston: I've talked enough of… to enough of the old-school people that, like…
- 49:52Moritz Junker: I'm aware of, like, how the…
- 49:56Tad Eggleston: It still doesn't make any more money than it did back then, but, like, at least it's not.
- 50:01Moritz Junker: Well, now… People who are drawing advertising, they… they make zero money, so…
- 50:06Tad Eggleston: That's true, too.
- 50:07Moritz Junker: No, the comics, they outlasted it.
- 50:09Tad Eggleston: They do… for the most part, they make more than advertising now. Yeah.
- 50:15Moritz Junker: So, you know, who really wins in the end?
- 50:19Tad Eggleston: But that's only because of photography.
- 50:22Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 50:24Moritz Junker: But still, you know, we gotta take that.
- 50:27Tad Eggleston: Though, you know, I mean, have you ever been at, like, a hospital or a hotel and looked at the boring-ass, like.
- 50:37Tad Eggleston: completely…
- 50:39Tad Eggleston: unoriginal, not bad, but not good landscape paintings that they have all over the place. What do you want to bet that every one of those, somebody got paid $200 for?
- 50:53Moritz Junker: I don't know, I…
- 50:55Tad Eggleston: That's my hunch, my hunch.
- 50:57Moritz Junker: Maybe.
- 50:57Tad Eggleston: Like, every one of those you see anywhere, somebody who decided that I'm gonna focus on this market, where they want to have the original art, but also don't want anything that will either get stolen or offend anybody.
- 51:13Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah, I guess so.
- 51:15Tad Eggleston: They…
- 51:16Moritz Junker: But I feel like…
- 51:17Tad Eggleston: We're at a time.
- 51:20Moritz Junker: Yeah, but how many people do you think can do that as a job, like, in the world? Like, 100?
- 51:25Tad Eggleston: Probably not a lot.
- 51:25Moritz Junker: Like, you know… Particularly because.
- 51:27Tad Eggleston: I think most artists would, like.
- 51:30Tad Eggleston: not want to do that, is it? That's true, yeah, I don't know.
- 51:35Moritz Junker: Yeah, I guess, I don't know, I never think about where.
- 51:37Tad Eggleston: Though I will also.
- 51:38Moritz Junker: Someone has to make it.
- 51:38Tad Eggleston: Most artists completely undervalue their own work.
- 51:45Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 51:46Tad Eggleston: you know, I say this as somebody married to an artist that always, like.
- 51:50Tad Eggleston: You know, she'll get commissioned to do this or that, and, like, wanna give, like, this ridiculously low price, and it's like, how many hours are you gonna spend on it?
- 51:59Tad Eggleston: Well, like, 3 hours.
- 52:01Tad Eggleston: and you're charging 50 bucks? Well, yeah. And I'm like, so your time is worth the same as the guy at the McDonald's drive-thru.
- 52:12Moritz Junker: It was probably also underpaid, you know, like…
- 52:15Tad Eggleston: Well, yes!
- 52:16Moritz Junker: Yeah, you know, like, yeah.
- 52:17Tad Eggleston: But even so, the guy at the McDonald's drive-thru, and I have the utmost respect for the guy at the McDonald's drive-thru, and he should be getting paid more, but he doesn't have the same skill as somebody who's being commissioned to do an art piece.
- 52:30Tad Eggleston: Yeah. And if he is, he should also get paid better than he does when he says.
- 52:35Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:35Tad Eggleston: I threw it.
- 52:36Moritz Junker: No, I get you, yeah.
- 52:38Tad Eggleston: I, I was having lunch with, I was actually having lunch in Milwaukee before stopping in at Lion's Tooth with,
- 52:48Tad Eggleston: dennis Kitchen and… Why can't I remember Dan's last name right now?
- 52:55Tad Eggleston: But I looked up, and, like, there was a painting on the wall that wasn't bad, but I didn't think it was great. I thought it was a little busy, that sort of thing, and it was priced at $400. And I asked them, like.
- 53:08Tad Eggleston: Do you think that's a reasonable price for that? And they're like, yes.
- 53:12Tad Eggleston: Because… A.
- 53:15Moritz Junker: It's probably a lot of work.
- 53:16Tad Eggleston: Somebody's gonna like putting that in their living room.
- 53:19Tad Eggleston: B.
- 53:20Tad Eggleston: It's probably at least 3 or 4 hours worth of work.
- 53:22Tad Eggleston: And art is a skill profession.
- 53:25Moritz Junker: Yeah. Yeah, okay. Yeah, I get you.
- 53:28Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 53:30Tad Eggleston: So, this is partially my way of also saying, like, don't undersell your comics, though you don't seem to. You've got decent prices on them.
- 53:42Tad Eggleston: you know, I think 8… well, mediocrity, I think, should be $2 more.
- 53:50Moritz Junker: Well, that's, you know, that's like…
- 53:51Tad Eggleston: Position, you could have made a dollar more.
- 53:54Moritz Junker: Yeah, maybe.
- 53:56Moritz Junker: But I also wanna…
- 53:58Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 53:59Moritz Junker: Those are from when I was younger, you know, that's, like, from a year ago, mediocrity, that's probably, like, 3 years ago.
- 54:04Moritz Junker: I'll, I'll bump him up as I can.
- 54:06Tad Eggleston: I'm saying, when you put something on the table from now on, $5 is your bare minimum.
- 54:12Moritz Junker: $10 a year.
- 54:13Tad Eggleston: affair for literally anything. And if you want to arrange for people to be able to give you money without, like.
- 54:22Tad Eggleston: Having to spend 10 bucks? Have stickers.
- 54:25Tad Eggleston: They cost you a dime, you charge a dollar.
- 54:28Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 54:28Moritz Junker: Sure, okay, yeah, yeah.
- 54:31Tad Eggleston: This is my advice to, like, all…
- 54:35Moritz Junker: Fix my margins.
- 54:36Tad Eggleston: It's like… Whatever it costs you to make it.
- 54:41Tad Eggleston: At least triple that.
- 54:43Tad Eggleston: At least triple that.
- 54:46Moritz Junker: Okay.
- 54:46Tad Eggleston: Because the most… the most…
- 54:52Tad Eggleston: There's… there's no distributor, there's no middleman, there's no store that needs to get profit.
- 54:58Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 55:02Tad Eggleston: So, like…
- 55:04Tad Eggleston: The supply shouldn't be what you're basing the price on. The work that you did should be what you're basing the price on.
- 55:12Tad Eggleston: Does that make sense?
- 55:14Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:16Tad Eggleston: And for that matter, it also gives you the ability to…
- 55:19Tad Eggleston: Put it on consignment places without giving up all the…
- 55:23Moritz Junker: Come on, sir.
- 55:24Tad Eggleston: You might have made.
- 55:25Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I gotcha. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, if you spent $4 to make it, and you put a $5 price tag on it, and you decide to put it consignment somewhere where they're gonna take $2.
- 55:35Moritz Junker: Yeah. You will make no money.
- 55:38Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 55:39Moritz Junker: You lost money to sell it. Yeah. No, that's true.
- 55:44Tad Eggleston: And, and, like, I get the making your name and that sort of thing, but, like…
- 55:49Moritz Junker: Yeah, well, I think also, like.
- 55:52Moritz Junker: you know, initially, it was just like… I used to just, like, make comics and copy them and then, like, give them to my friends, because I was like.
- 55:58Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah, I mean.
- 55:59Moritz Junker: Yes. Who knows?
- 56:00Tad Eggleston: That's a whole different thing, though. Frankly, charge those bastards. Charge them in reverse. Say, just pick up the phone and say.
- 56:07Moritz Junker: Okay, you owe me.
- 56:08Tad Eggleston: That comic I gave you 10.
- 56:09Moritz Junker: $3.
- 56:11Tad Eggleston: You owe me 10 bucks!
- 56:13Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 56:15Tad Eggleston: Appreciate it in value.
- 56:16Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah, inflation, man. That would have been $2, then now it's, like, $4.
- 56:23Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 56:24Moritz Junker: I'm sorry, I just, I want…
- 56:27Tad Eggleston: And I put.
- 56:27Moritz Junker: No, I get you, I'm gonna…
- 56:28Tad Eggleston: You saw…
- 56:30Tad Eggleston: Well, but you know I put my money where my mouth is, too. You saw how much Kelly and I wound up buying walking up and down the road. We're teachers, you know.
- 56:40Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:41Tad Eggleston: But that's also part of my point, is, like, most people understand that indie comics people,
- 56:49Tad Eggleston: Aren't in it for the money.
- 56:53Tad Eggleston: And certainly aren't, like, getting fat off the money. You know what I mean? Yeah. So those of us who want to go support it, we actually kind of want to… I mean, I actually do two things. I mean, the first thing is that, like, I buy way too many indie comics. I, like, have a backlog of ones that I haven't gotten to. I love having…
- 57:13Tad Eggleston: People like you on the show, just because it makes me read your stuff.
- 57:17Tad Eggleston: Makes me… makes me kick it to the front of the list. You know what I mean?
- 57:22Moritz Junker: Liam.
- 57:24Tad Eggleston: But the other thing that I have a tendency to do is, like, if I… if I have, like, 4 books, and you tell me the total's 22, I'll give you 30.
- 57:33Moritz Junker: That's sweet.
- 57:34Moritz Junker: Yeah, that's easier. Cause I'm like…
- 57:37Tad Eggleston: No, no, 22's not enough.
- 57:40Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:41Tad Eggleston: And since we're doing this by Venmo, how are you gonna stop me?
- 57:45Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 57:48Moritz Junker: Yeah, true that.
- 57:50Tad Eggleston: I… I should be thinking about bed, because, you know, I have to get up way too early tomorrow morning. But, I have a favorite question to ask everybody, and that is…
- 58:02Tad Eggleston: Tell me something you love.
- 58:05Tad Eggleston: Preferably a comic?
- 58:07Tad Eggleston: But we don't really have rules.
- 58:10Moritz Junker: Huh.
- 58:10Tad Eggleston: Preferably storytelling, but again, with the rules.
- 58:14Tad Eggleston: It's something that you love.
- 58:17Tad Eggleston: That not enough people around you have experienced, and you really, really want them to, so you have more people to talk about it with.
- 59:18Moritz Junker: I'd say… I don't know.
- 59:25Moritz Junker: Something I love that more people should experience.
- 59:29Tad Eggleston: I'd say…
- 59:34Tad Eggleston: And not just more people should experience, more people should experience so that you can talk with them about it.
- 59:41Moritz Junker: Hmm.
- 59:42Tad Eggleston: We want to be able to share this experience on some level.
- 59:52Moritz Junker: Wait, hmm.
- 1:00:02Tad Eggleston: This is where I should point out for listeners that Moritz doesn't have bookshelves behind him to cheat the way so many of the other guests on the show do, where they immediately turn around and be like…
- 1:00:12Moritz Junker: Yeah, in my room.
- 1:00:13Tad Eggleston: Just a small curve.
- 1:00:15Moritz Junker: You know, I would say, like.
- 1:00:18Moritz Junker: You know, do you know Jeffrey Brown?
- 1:00:21Moritz Junker: Cartoonist, Jeffrey Brown.
- 1:00:24Tad Eggleston: I don't do a bunch.
- 1:00:25Moritz Junker: wheel.
- 1:00:25Tad Eggleston: I, I, like, know him.
- 1:00:28Moritz Junker: Okay, that's cool.
- 1:00:29Tad Eggleston: He's been.
- 1:00:31Moritz Junker: I don't know, to him.
- 1:00:31Tad Eggleston: I feel like he's the area.
- 1:00:34Moritz Junker: He's not talked about enough. I think he's… he's really cool.
- 1:00:36Moritz Junker: And… I, like, I don't know, I read…
- 1:00:40Moritz Junker: like, he did the Star Wars books, I read those when I was a kid, and then…
- 1:00:44Moritz Junker: later, I, like, read his, like, adult books, and I was like, oh, these are so cool, and then I was like, wait, this is the same guy! So I would say him. Yep. I don't know, he's…
- 1:00:51Tad Eggleston: And for me, I did it the other way around.
- 1:00:55Moritz Junker: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 1:00:57Tad Eggleston: And then when my kids were young is when his Star Wars book started, because his kids are a little bit younger than mine, and that's when he started doing those.
- 1:01:04Tad Eggleston: Yeah. So when his kids were young is when he did the Star Wars books.
- 1:01:09Tad Eggleston: And… I would get them to read to my children.
- 1:01:17Moritz Junker: Yeah, that's… that's… I kind of…
- 1:01:20Moritz Junker: it made me kind of chuckle, because I was like, oh, that's like,
- 1:01:23Moritz Junker: Probably how most people read his stuff.
- 1:01:25Tad Eggleston: And actually, actually, I will totally, totally, totally plug to you, even, his most recent book, Hulk Teach.
- 1:01:37Moritz Junker: I saw, like, Free Comic Book Day 1. I read that. Yeah. Like, the…
- 1:01:40Tad Eggleston: Hulked.
- 1:01:41Moritz Junker: That's part of it. That was really fun.
- 1:01:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's so good.
- 1:01:45Moritz Junker: I sent him some of my comics, and he, like, sent back a postcard, which was really sweet.
- 1:01:49Tad Eggleston: I believe it.
- 1:01:50Moritz Junker: Yeah, he's like… I don't know, I like them.
- 1:01:53Tad Eggleston: He's a really good guy.
- 1:01:55Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 1:01:55Tad Eggleston: You know he's local.
- 1:01:58Moritz Junker: Little Chicago, right?
- 1:02:00Tad Eggleston: Chicago suburbs.
- 1:02:02Moritz Junker: Okay, yeah.
- 1:02:03Tad Eggleston: It's probably less than an hour from you.
- 1:02:06Moritz Junker: Okay.
- 1:02:07Moritz Junker: Oh, I could go say hi.
- 1:02:09Tad Eggleston: You, you should…
- 1:02:10Moritz Junker: Go by unannounced.
- 1:02:11Tad Eggleston: No, you should… no, you should convince, convince, Kristen…
- 1:02:18Tad Eggleston: Shelly to invite him to the store for a signing.
- 1:02:22Moritz Junker: Actually, a good idea.
- 1:02:22Tad Eggleston: He's got a new book!
- 1:02:23Moritz Junker: Yeah, that's not a bad idea. Yeah, Craig Thompson came in when I was, like, not working one day, and I was like, aw…
- 1:02:30Moritz Junker: Like, Chris and Shelly were like, yeah, we were hanging out with Craig Thompson yesterday, and I was like, oh…
- 1:02:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean, I think I told you… I think I told you at, insert name, the… I was sitting at the table with Dennis Kitchen when he drew the picture that's on the wall there.
- 1:02:49Moritz Junker: Oh, yeah, yeah, you did tell me that.
- 1:02:52Moritz Junker: Yeah, shit. Fuck, that's cool.
- 1:02:54Tad Eggleston: I think that might have been before you moved out to Milwaukee, because you've only been.
- 1:02:58Moritz Junker: Yeah, that would have been… a year.
- 1:03:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah, cause… yeah, because it was not this summer, this most recent summer, it was the summer before.
- 1:03:08Tad Eggleston: So it's like.
- 1:03:10Tad Eggleston: Summer 2024.
- 1:03:12Moritz Junker: Yeah, that would have been, like.
- 1:03:13Tad Eggleston: We met up, and we spent a couple hours just sitting and drinking tea, and…
- 1:03:18Tad Eggleston: Talking while he sketched things.
- 1:03:21Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 1:03:23Tad Eggleston: So, you know, there's actually a pretty cool comics community in,
- 1:03:28Tad Eggleston: Milwaukee, so, like, I hope you enjoy that. Are you gonna be tabling at Milk?
- 1:03:33Moritz Junker: Yeah, I'm gonna be.
- 1:03:34Tad Eggleston: That's right around the corner, isn't it?
- 1:03:36Moritz Junker: That's, like, weekend after the next, I think?
- 1:03:39Moritz Junker: Yeah, weekend after next. 27th.
- 1:03:43Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 1:03:45Tad Eggleston: I might have to see if I can get up there.
- 1:03:48Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 1:03:51Moritz Junker: I know, I always plan to, and then things get in the way, so, like, this year, I wanna…
- 1:03:58Tad Eggleston: Wanna, like, make a bigger point out of it.
- 1:04:03Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:04:04Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 1:04:09Moritz Junker: Yeah, I don't know, you should come, if you're around.
- 1:04:12Tad Eggleston: No, like I said, I, I, it's always a goal of mine, and then…
- 1:04:18Tad Eggleston: I either forget or wind up having something going on, but since we're talking about it right now, I am going to look at my calendar. It's a Saturday…
- 1:04:33Tad Eggleston: You know, I might be able to make it. I have a therapy session in the evening.
- 1:04:37Tad Eggleston: But I can always do that, like… from anywhere.
- 1:04:41Moritz Junker: It's, like, in the morning, it's, like, 11 to…
- 1:04:43Tad Eggleston: It's 11 to 7.
- 1:04:44Moritz Junker: Yeah, yeah, so, like,
- 1:04:47Tad Eggleston: And I'll probably get done with my last Saturday morning podcast around 11, so I could get up there by noon.
- 1:04:54Tad Eggleston: Which would give me 4 hours to still be home by 5.
- 1:04:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, we're gonna… we're gonna make certain that we throw that on the calendar now.
- 1:05:04Moritz Junker: Nice.
- 1:05:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, this is what we do on the air, rather than saying, turning off the recording and saying goodnight, or saying goodnight and turning off the recording. We talk about scheduling, and then we go, oh yeah, this might not be… We're still recording, yeah.
- 1:05:18Moritz Junker: Yeah, this might not be the.
- 1:05:20Tad Eggleston: Interesting to our listeners. Hi, Mom!
- 1:05:24Moritz Junker: Yeah, you guys can come too, you know?
- 1:05:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, no, we… I should, I should definitely, let's give the full plug here. The Milwaukee Indy Local Comics Fest, on, on September 27th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at…
- 1:05:43Tad Eggleston: the… 3rd Street Market Hall.
- 1:05:48Tad Eggleston: Which is 275 West Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee. It is a free event.
- 1:05:56Tad Eggleston: Moritz is tabling there. I'm certain that other cool people will be tabling there. Do we have a list of guests anywhere?
- 1:06:04Tad Eggleston: Look at our special guests. I do. I have a list of special guests. Maggie Umber will be there. John Porcellino will be there.
- 1:06:13Moritz Junker: Yeah.
- 1:06:14Tad Eggleston: blue… Delicanti? Who I don't actually know.
- 1:06:24Moritz Junker: But their work looks good.
- 1:06:28Tad Eggleston: So yeah. So yeah, we got some cool people there.
- 1:06:32Tad Eggleston: So, if you're in the Milwaukee area, or not, but like to drive, September 27th.
- 1:06:40Tad Eggleston: And you should come down for cake next year.
- 1:06:45Tad Eggleston: You would enjoy the Chicago Alternative Comic Constitution. That's in August, right?
- 1:06:50Tad Eggleston: It's often actually in June or July.
- 1:06:55Moritz Junker: Oh, okay. Yeah, I should probably… But I don't know if it's been…
- 1:06:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, keep in touch. I'll drag you places with me. I have a car. I like comics dudes. Yeah, weird.
- 1:07:06Moritz Junker: dear.
- 1:07:07Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 1:07:08Tad Eggleston: I don't know how you would guess that I like comics dudes. This is only, like, the 695th recording of 22 pedals in less than 4 years.
- 1:07:20Moritz Junker: Nice.
- 1:07:21Tad Eggleston: So for Moritz Junker, this has been 22 Panels, and we will see you after the next page.
