- 0:02Welcome to Let's Talk Sister, about life, the whole damn thing.
- 0:06We're Shell and Chrissy. We're sisters, and this is where we talk about life
- 0:10as we've lived it, as we're living it, and sometimes where we're still trying to figure it out.
- 0:17We'll talk about family, relationships, love, loss, grief, joy,
- 0:23work, money, spirituality, sexuality, aging, our bodies, and probably a whole
- 0:29bunch of other stuff we haven't even talked about yet.
- 0:33We don't have all the answers, and we're definitely not going to pretend we do.
- 0:37We're just two sisters having real conversation and inviting you to be part of them.
- 0:41So grab your coffee, your wine, or whatever gets you through the day and come hang out with us.
- 0:47Let's talk, sister, about life, the whole damn thing.
- 0:50Welcome to the very first episode of let's talk sister who are we well we're
- 0:55sisters literally literally,
- 0:58but there's a whole lot more to the story in our first episode we're introducing
- 1:03ourselves talking about our age difference i'm i'm older way older.
- 1:11What we remember about growing up together, how our relationship has evolved
- 1:16over the years, and who we are today, both personally and professionally.
- 1:21We've lived very different lives in some ways, and we've shared some pretty
- 1:24significant experiences in others. We've experienced love, loss,
- 1:28marriage, family, careers. Wait, wait, marriages.
- 1:31Yeah, that's true. So successes, careers, failure, grief, joy,
- 1:37reinvention, aging, which sucks ass, and all the messy stuff that happens in between.
- 1:43And that is actually why we created Let's Talk, Sister.
- 1:47This isn't a podcast where we're going to sit behind microphones and pretend
- 1:51to have a life figured out because we don't.
- 1:53We're going to talk about life, the whole damn thing.
- 1:57The beautiful parts the heartbreaking parts the ridiculous parts the things
- 2:01that make us laugh until we can't breathe or pee our pants,
- 2:04and the things that have brought us to our knees we'll talk about death and
- 2:08grief bliss and love family and relationships business and careers money,
- 2:14aging our bodies our mistakes our wins the things we've survived and the things
- 2:20we're still trying to figure out p.s and children so children don't be mad at
- 2:23us we're just loving you from From right behind this microphone.
- 2:26We might name drop. I might change your name. So I don't know.
- 2:31And yes, probably a few things that make us look at each other and say,
- 2:34are we really going to talk about this? Yep, we probably are.
- 2:37Because more than anything, we want Let's Talk Sister to become a safe place
- 2:42for real conversations.
- 2:44We're not here to tell you how to live your life.
- 2:46We're going to share ours honestly and create space for you to bring yours into
- 2:50the conversation, too. We want to hear, fuck it.
- 2:55Okay. Oh, sorry. Don't apologize.
- 2:59Never apologize. We want you to hear something and think, oh, my God, me too.
- 3:04We want you to laugh with us, cry with us, disagree with us,
- 3:07tell us your stories, ask us uncomfortable questions, and be part of the community
- 3:12where authenticity, why you got to have big words in there, matter more than
- 3:18having everything together.
- 3:19Because, oh, my gosh, you're cracking me up.
- 3:22Because none of us is just one thing.
- 3:25We're personal and professional, strong and scared, grieving and joyful.
- 3:29Success is still figuring shit out.
- 3:31I thought that said sacred instead of scared. You know, I thought it said sacred,
- 3:35too. And then, like, I did a double take, and I was like, nope, that's scared.
- 3:39No, no, yo, we're sacred.
- 3:41Yeah, we're sacred, too, bitches.
- 3:44Sometimes all in the same damn day. Yep, that's life. The whole damn thing.
- 3:48Welcome to it. Let's talk, sister.
- 3:51Okay, this is where it's going to get real. So, fuck, how old are you, sissy? Too old.
- 3:5648. All right, and I'm 56. Like she said, I'm way older.
- 4:02I do have gray hair, but you would never know because I dye those sparkles. Same.
- 4:08Yep. So eight years difference. And yet...
- 4:12One of my very best friends in life. Like she's my person. Yeah.
- 4:17So who are you? Tell the world who you are. Well, I think first and foremost,
- 4:22when I came to this world, I was a daughter and a sister.
- 4:25And then I morphed into a mother and then a wife and then a divorcee and then
- 4:32a wife again and then a mother to a stepchild and then a medium.
- 4:37And then now I'm just living my best life as a dog mom like how about you because
- 4:43all my kids are grown-ass adults,
- 4:44so yeah well and I let's see where do I start I was born a preemie so I was
- 4:50fighting coming into the world like I knew I needed to get going with this thing
- 4:55and so Scorpio right here
- 4:59and and I was always good at everything I,
- 5:02tried so it's just been a pattern my life like do a whole bunch of things and do I'm excellent.
- 5:08And then I became a mom at 18.
- 5:12That child was not born. And so instead, I became rebellious a little bit and
- 5:17joined the Marine Corps, you know, because I was scared to travel.
- 5:20So what I do, I joined something that took me all around the world.
- 5:23And then I got married and had two amazing children with that sperm donor and
- 5:29then became a divorcee as well.
- 5:32And yeah, the path took me down a road where I remarried and remarried and had
- 5:39another baby, my youngest, and also had a stepchild. And then...
- 5:46Yeah, I, what I love is the fact that like we can, we can laugh about the multiple
- 5:52marriages for both of us.
- 5:53Like, you have great kids and I have great kids, you know, and they're 100%
- 5:59mine, like all four of them. Three I birthed, one I didn't, you know.
- 6:03Yeah, and I have six total, two in heaven, one stepchild, one in-law and three,
- 6:11okay, don't be mad at me children, vagina babies. Patch goblins.
- 6:16And, you know, I wouldn't change a dang thing because it made me who I am and
- 6:20I like who I am and I love who you are.
- 6:23And I love your grit that you've gotten through all of your life experiences.
- 6:27And I remember when you joined the Marines, because remember I had the tonsillectomy? I do.
- 6:32And, like, I tried to talk to you over the phone and I'm all...
- 6:37It didn't work out very well. It was so funny. Yeah. And it was like,
- 6:40you know, being eight years older, you know, I like wanted the hell out of what
- 6:45I was in my life and I just wanted to get on with it.
- 6:48And so I feel like I missed so much of that teenage part of your life.
- 6:52But I was just like, I was into myself at that moment. Let me tell you something.
- 6:57Like, my early teen experience gave teenage angst a whole different definition
- 7:04than what other people have gone through.
- 7:06I think a lot of that has to do with, you know, the experiences that I went
- 7:11through, which is like when grief started for me. Yeah, exactly. So, history.
- 7:16We have two brothers, amazing brothers, Jay and Jacob, that are now on the other side of things.
- 7:23And we know they're very still very much still with us have a daughter on the
- 7:28other side we've lost grandparents and parents you know my mom is deceased and you know
- 7:35it's it's brought us to right now right here yeah so to clarify michelle and
- 7:38i are half sisters but you would never know that
- 7:41just because of how,
- 7:44we have handled adulthood i think because like when we were younger michelle lived in Nebraska,
- 7:50with her mom and our older brother, and then I grew up in Colorado with our
- 7:56dad, my mom, and our two brothers that were handicapped.
- 8:02And so if you hear us talk, I just want to clarify. So I refer to my mom, which is my mom.
- 8:09And then I refer to Kristen's mom as mom, too, because when my mom died,
- 8:14I asked Deb to be my mom because I still need a mom.
- 8:18And she's always been kind and generous and loving. And she's a great example
- 8:24of what a mom should be. And that's what I needed.
- 8:27And this will come up, but, you know, my mom was, had some mental, she was bipolar.
- 8:34She was clinically depressed and she hid that from the world,
- 8:37but I was her safe person and I got to see all of her.
- 8:40And so she was my greatest fan and sometimes my greatest enemy.
- 8:43And so mom too has brought me this piece that I'm okay exactly how I am.
- 8:50And, um, I still need that.
- 8:52Yeah. So I'm grateful. Yeah. Two moms. I needed two. I need extra parenting.
- 8:56Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, you do.
- 9:00It's all good. It's all good. Hey, I'm all up for help. So just like,
- 9:05you know, sometimes our children need other moms. And you know what?
- 9:09It's okay. Like, we don't have to be the end all be all, though we fucking rock. Yeah.
- 9:14I mean, like, there was a point in time where my oldest, my daughter,
- 9:18she had to go to a different household and live with a different mom.
- 9:23And I'm thankful for that because it helped to shape my daughter,
- 9:26who's now 26, into who she is.
- 9:30And her and I have a great relationship too. Yeah.
- 9:33And, you know, let's throw this out there. Like, you know, relationships ebb and flow.
- 9:38So I have one of my children who, you know, isn't in life right now.
- 9:42And that's okay. What I wish is love, peace, joy, gratitude,
- 9:46bliss, and happiness for.
- 9:49Him and his whole entire family because I would never wish anything else.
- 9:54And if he only heard one message from me ever, it would be, I love you.
- 9:57Yeah. I love you too. Yeah. So that is what we know. And so that's who we are.
- 10:03How old do you make me sound? I am like young and I work out and I'm like,
- 10:08dude, I'm a young 56. I do not work out. I am fluffy and content.
- 10:13Like I'm totally Yeah. So we're going to talk about some of our differences
- 10:18and some of our similarities. But if you saw us together, you'd be like, you are sisters.
- 10:23So my dad... All the time. Dad, you got strong genes. Mm-hmm.
- 10:27I don't know how it happens, but you have my mom's bedonky donk.
- 10:32I don't know how that worked. I don't know.
- 10:34But I mean, it's fine. Well, I have a theory. You want it? Yeah.
- 10:38Mom and dad, my mom and dad, deny this. But, but, speaking of but.
- 10:44I, and every African-American I know, thinks that my mom slept with a mailman
- 10:51because I have a black girl butt.
- 10:54Like, where did that come from? No one else on my side has black girl butt.
- 10:59Like, I don't even think, like, on dad's side, nobody has a,
- 11:02they have pancake ass. Okay, so then that comes back to dad.
- 11:06Maybe my mom isn't my mom. She's just someone that raised me.
- 11:10We got to talk to Dad. I don't think that's going to track, sis. I need to tell you that.
- 11:16All right. Well, I guess somewhere in our family, some of our genes,
- 11:20there's probably, you know, some badonkadonk butt genes.
- 11:24I don't, because Grandma Jerry had a bank, I guess. But maybe it's before her.
- 11:28Maybe somewhere back in history, there's a badonkadonk. Maybe.
- 11:33I don't know. All I know is mine is liked very well by my husband.
- 11:37And people like badonkadonks. I was like, people pay for this.
- 11:41Mine's free. Mine's free too. I know. Isn't that great? Wait, high five. High five.
- 11:46High five for the badonkadonka. All right. So, wow. If that doesn't let you
- 11:49into our world and who we are, this is a normal conversation every day.
- 11:53So love you, children. Love you, mom. Love you, dad.
- 11:56Love you, mom. In heaven, love Jay Jacob, Tasha. All of you. Love you. All of you.
- 12:02And that's it for this episode of Let's Talk, Sister, about life, the whole damn thing.
- 12:06We're just two sisters sharing life as we've lived it, as we are living it,
- 12:12and sometimes as we're still trying to figure the hell out.
- 12:16But this isn't just our conversation. We want you in it too.
- 12:19Share your stories with us. Tell us what you're going through.
- 12:22Ask us questions or give us something you think sisters need to talk about.
- 12:27Come join us at Let's Talk Sister dot com.
- 12:30Until next time, keep showing up, keep being real, and remember,
- 12:34whatever you're walking through.
