- 0:33Speaker 1: they were back at it today. They're supposed to be
- 0:35Speaker 1: around noon, but they changed it yesterday to a morning practice.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Beyonce is here. What's that? Okay? Beehive? Beyonce, Beehive is attacking.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I would do at least one drill a day for
- 0:50Speaker 1: the next week where.
- 0:55Speaker 3: The top rope good thing when not on TV. It
- 0:58Speaker 3: just knocked me.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Maybe it's three seconds where you have to get rid
- 1:01Speaker 1: of the ball. I don't care if it gets intercepted,
- 1:04Speaker 1: but you have to make a decision within three seconds.
- 1:07Speaker 1: One drill a day, one drill a day.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Get it out drill.
- 1:10Speaker 4: So yeah, so here's the thing they haven't really executed.
- 1:14Speaker 4: You know, an intermediate to deep passing game.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Which is you know, and that's where you know chick
- 1:19Speaker 3: stick the deep ball.
- 1:19Speaker 1: You can't eat those trying to lose weight.
- 1:22Speaker 5: So do what each fod seasons over It's not just about.
- 1:26Speaker 3: The beach, it's full quality of life. Season is not
- 1:31Speaker 3: over right for us on the table right, and he
- 1:35Speaker 3: and I think too often that we are seeing him
- 1:38Speaker 3: leave money on the table.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Three second sessions being president of This is Patriot's Unfiltered,
- 1:43Speaker 1: presented by Toyota's official website for deals by a Toyota
- 1:47Speaker 1: dot com. All right, welcome the Patriots Unfiltered. It is
- 1:53Speaker 1: Thursday here at Jillette Stadium, day eight of practices, and
- 1:58Speaker 1: it's Paul, it's myself will be joining us, Evan will
- 2:01Speaker 1: be joining us. And I would say the practices of
- 2:04Speaker 1: late Paul have been offensive, and I mean that in
- 2:07Speaker 1: a good way. Ye.
- 2:09Speaker 3: The best thing for me is, you know, we went
- 2:12Speaker 3: sort of like tongue in cheek a little bit in
- 2:14Speaker 3: recent years, but back to back days in pads get
- 2:16Speaker 3: a chance to get a little more physicality to it.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I think the pass protection has been an issue kind
- 2:23Speaker 3: of understandable given all the backups that are out there
- 2:26Speaker 3: with the offensive line, but I would totally agree offensively,
- 2:30Speaker 3: they've had more signs of life, especially yesterday. But I
- 2:34Speaker 3: thought they continued some of that a little bit today,
- 2:39Speaker 3: working on some situational football, moving the ball down the
- 2:42Speaker 3: field and then in various spots in the high and
- 2:45Speaker 3: low red zone. It looks to me like mac Jones,
- 2:49Speaker 3: maybe he's taken your advice, Freddy. Not always, but more often,
- 2:55Speaker 3: the ball seems to be coming out on time.
- 2:56Speaker 1: It seems to be coming out on time. I saw
- 2:58Speaker 1: yesterday's practice, I watched. I only saw the end of
- 3:02Speaker 1: today's practice when they were doing their two minute drills, and.
- 3:06Speaker 3: That was that was different. That was designed for completions, right.
- 3:09Speaker 1: But it looked good. I mean, I don't know how
- 3:11Speaker 1: if the defense was really you know, challenge.
- 3:14Speaker 3: It was definitely a faster pace than what they did yesterday.
- 3:17Speaker 1: And he looked good and he he felt good. And
- 3:20Speaker 1: you could tell from Max's body language. He was, you know,
- 3:24Speaker 1: dancing around, running off the field when they were getting
- 3:27Speaker 1: the field goal squad on, you know, kind of really
- 3:31Speaker 1: really excited.
- 3:32Speaker 3: And I liked it.
- 3:33Speaker 1: I mean, I do you know, he'll speak for himself.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I know I was up there with him. He didn't
- 3:38Speaker 1: like it. I like Mac being excited and running off and.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Just didn't like the the sprinting off the field. Yeah,
- 3:46Speaker 3: I would agree, Why because what are we doing? Well,
- 3:50Speaker 3: We're taking it. We taking it seriously.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Like you how to get the field goal?
- 3:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, like breaking the tape at the side, Like,
- 3:57Speaker 3: I know it's a whole I know it's practice, but it.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Was you know, you had no time left. You had
- 4:02Speaker 1: to get the field goal. There was no timeouts. You know,
- 4:05Speaker 1: everybody on offense had to sprint off. And so he
- 4:08Speaker 1: was having fun with it, but he was Yeah, I
- 4:11Speaker 1: was born in coverage. I liked.
- 4:12Speaker 3: I was born in coverage by the stuff that happened.
- 4:14Speaker 3: And and I'm not this is not a shot at
- 4:16Speaker 3: you because you didn't. You said you didn't see it.
- 4:18Speaker 3: You only saw the very end of practice, right, so
- 4:20Speaker 3: this wasn't meant to be taken that, you know, away
- 4:22Speaker 3: from what you just said. They had several periods of
- 4:26Speaker 3: eleven on eleven today. Interesting that I felt the first
- 4:32Speaker 3: couple of sets they had Mac with what you would
- 4:35Speaker 3: consider the starting offensive line, which is, like I said,
- 4:37Speaker 3: a lot of patchwork.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Yeah, there is not one right now.
- 4:39Speaker 3: He had the second receivers. He was working with Trey Nixon,
- 4:44Speaker 3: the Mario Douglas and Kayshawn Boudi, and one of the
- 4:50Speaker 3: best His best completion of camp came on a deep
- 4:53Speaker 3: over route toward the sideline to Nixon. Beautiful you know,
- 4:58Speaker 3: catch and throw. Dropped it in between Christian Gonzales and
- 5:02Speaker 3: Jabrill Peppers in coverage, a really nice throw, probably about
- 5:06Speaker 3: a thirty thirty five yard gain, and then Bailey Zappi
- 5:10Speaker 3: got a chance to operate with the second offensive line,
- 5:13Speaker 3: but with DeVante Parker, Jujus Smith, Schuster and Kendrick Bourne Born.
- 5:18Speaker 3: By the way, I think the last couple of days,
- 5:20Speaker 3: Freddy is coming on.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Alain, Yeah, he's looked pretty good. Thornton hasn't been participating again,
- 5:26Speaker 1: he's down conditioning. Is that an opening for Trey Nixon?
- 5:30Speaker 3: Yeah? I think that.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Who else is an outside guy? Well, yeah, I guess Hopkins.
- 5:36Speaker 1: I'm not Hopkins. I wish park I get Parker is
- 5:39Speaker 1: but he's not a Parker A starter. Yeah, but he's
- 5:42Speaker 1: but he's not a birth I'm talking about it. Does
- 5:44Speaker 1: he have an opening to be an outside guy because
- 5:47Speaker 1: you know what a deep threat Nixon?
- 5:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think that's his game. But they I mean,
- 5:53Speaker 3: I think he has a chance to maybe find a
- 5:56Speaker 3: roster spot if if Thornton's going to be not ready
- 5:59Speaker 3: to go at the start of the year or whatever.
- 6:01Speaker 3: I don't know what's going on with him. He was
- 6:03Speaker 3: slowed in the spring. I think reports had a soft tissue.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Injury burners. Those are not good, you know, hamstring squads whatnot,
- 6:12Speaker 3: you know, for guys that run like that or those
- 6:14Speaker 3: those are tough to kick. So yeah, I think Nixon, Douglas,
- 6:19Speaker 3: those guys have opportunities to get roster spots because they're
- 6:21Speaker 3: getting more opportunities to play.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Pop almost is a locke at this point. And we
- 6:26Speaker 1: had Julian Edelman here watching practice today, and I'm wondering
- 6:31Speaker 1: if they said, hey, Julian, can you come look at
- 6:33Speaker 1: this guy and see what you think if you could
- 6:35Speaker 1: as a future as a slot receiver. Wonder if they're
- 6:38Speaker 1: asking his opinion on Pop Douglas, what.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Do you think the answer to that? I have no idea,
- 6:44Speaker 3: Like obviously I'm full disclosure, I have no idea, But
- 6:46Speaker 3: what do you think that would be? Like Bill Belichick,
- 6:50Speaker 3: Bill Belichick asked somebody else's like, what do you what
- 6:53Speaker 3: do you think.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Well, it doesn't have to be Bill Belichick, could be
- 6:56Speaker 1: Troy Brown asking, it could be you.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Know, yeah, I don't don't see that. Okay, I mean, like,
- 7:02Speaker 3: I don't know, I'm not I'm not poo pooing.
- 7:04Speaker 1: You don't get mad.
- 7:05Speaker 3: He was here, Yeah, yeah, Jules was here. I think
- 7:07Speaker 3: he looked like he talked to the team at the
- 7:09Speaker 3: end of practice. You know that we had a lot
- 7:13Speaker 3: of rookies talk today, so people were asking him about
- 7:16Speaker 3: that conversation, the rookies doing what rookies are supposed to do.
- 7:20Speaker 3: They stayed away from that. They didn't really get into
- 7:23Speaker 3: what the message was from Julian Edelman. But yeah, I mean,
- 7:27Speaker 3: I'm not telling you you're wrong. Maybe Bill, did you know,
- 7:30Speaker 3: sort of give him a call. Hey, you're in the neighborhood.
- 7:31Speaker 3: You know what, while you're here, I'm curious, what are
- 7:33Speaker 3: your thoughts on this?
- 7:34Speaker 1: Julian said to the rookies, you're too young.
- 7:37Speaker 3: You're too young, so you have to repeat that. One
- 7:45Speaker 3: Mike gets back that's good, but another good day. I
- 7:49Speaker 3: think overall, like and you look at it two ways,
- 7:52Speaker 3: and we all do the same thing. Like the defense
- 7:56Speaker 3: has played really well, for the most part, and no
- 7:59Speaker 3: one says, well, good days the defense has played well,
- 8:03Speaker 3: but no one says that, like when the offense makes
- 8:05Speaker 3: some plays, it's good day to day.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Well, that's what we're worried. We're more worried about the offense.
- 8:10Speaker 3: But now there were some uh, there's some some signs.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I think it's really interesting Fred that they're tackling, you know,
- 8:20Speaker 3: like that little ball carrying drill they do. Yeah, it's like,
- 8:23Speaker 3: you know, you get a guy in space and you
- 8:24Speaker 3: got to sort of, you know, get get in position
- 8:27Speaker 3: where you would be able to tackle.
- 8:28Speaker 1: There's pylons, you gotta be you gotta.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Stay stay with the constricted area, confined area, and you know,
- 8:34Speaker 3: you you you just tap him on the hip. Yeah,
- 8:36Speaker 3: I had them, I was in position. They were actually
- 8:39Speaker 3: tackling to the ground on those plays. Today.
- 8:41Speaker 1: To me, you got to do that before your first
- 8:43Speaker 1: preseason game.
- 8:45Speaker 3: My wonder is is if Bill has looked at it
- 8:47Speaker 3: the last couple of years, the whole like, you know,
- 8:48Speaker 3: extension of the preseason nonsense, I know, and maybe he
- 8:51Speaker 3: looks and says, you know, we're just not ready to
- 8:53Speaker 3: go at the start of the season. So we got
- 8:54Speaker 3: to step this up a little bit.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Yeah, And you know, I would say, you want to
- 8:59Speaker 1: get something tackling in before the joint practices. You know,
- 9:02Speaker 1: you don't want the first time you're tackling to be
- 9:05Speaker 1: full speed and you know, against another team.
- 9:08Speaker 3: But they never tackle really in joint practices either. No,
- 9:13Speaker 3: but that's why. And I'll be curious Evan just joined us.
- 9:15Speaker 3: I'd be curious to get your thoughts because I didn't
- 9:17Speaker 3: get a chance to talk to you after practice. Just
- 9:21Speaker 3: like I thought yesterday, there was more than a handful
- 9:24Speaker 3: of times with the guy who caught the ball or
- 9:25Speaker 3: ended up with the ball and met up on the ground.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Today it was clearly we're tackling today, Like there was
- 9:31Speaker 3: a lot of tackling today. I just thoughts.
- 9:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I thought it was interesting. They did a drill
- 9:36Speaker 5: too at one point where they were tackling to the ground.
- 9:38Speaker 5: I was just talking about, Yeah, I don't didn't recall
- 9:41Speaker 5: seeing that often.
- 9:43Speaker 3: I mean, like, I'm not saying I never saw it,
- 9:45Speaker 3: but I don't remember the last time.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Yeah, it's definitely happens here or there that they they
- 9:50Speaker 5: do it. They obviously have to practice tackling at some point,
- 9:53Speaker 5: but it doesn't happen very often. And I think on
- 9:56Speaker 5: top of that, Christian Gonzales laid out Rolly Webb, you know,
- 10:00Speaker 5: And I don't mean it like he was trying to
- 10:01Speaker 5: hurt him.
- 10:01Speaker 3: He took his legs right out. Really good tackle for lost. Yeah,
- 10:05Speaker 3: and I.
- 10:05Speaker 5: Don't necessarily remember seeing that. Now Christian Salace is a rookie,
- 10:09Speaker 5: so maybe it was one of those situations. But yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 5: it's a good point. I don't I think there's always
- 10:15Speaker 5: one or two practices, and then certainly the the call
- 10:19Speaker 5: it the third team guys that are really fighting to
- 10:22Speaker 5: make the roster. Those guys often that period of eleven
- 10:25Speaker 5: on eleven's will be live tackling because you have guys
- 10:28Speaker 5: out there that are just trying to make a team
- 10:31Speaker 5: in the NFL, and it's not Juju Smith Schuster that
- 10:34Speaker 5: they're tackling no offense to some of the depth of receivers.
- 10:37Speaker 5: So I think that that's always been a thing. But
- 10:41Speaker 5: the frontline guys getting tackled, that's a different story.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yesterday they had some goal line where they were pretty
- 10:47Speaker 1: much that was Yeah, that was flat out live.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Yeah, the goal line was live yesterday. Yeah, but even
- 10:51Speaker 3: there was a play today one of the first plays
- 10:55Speaker 3: of team. You know, Matt Soko caught a little hook pass.
- 10:58Speaker 3: As soon as he caught it, Bentley pop the ball
- 11:01Speaker 3: right out. Then it was like a mad scramble for
- 11:05Speaker 3: the ball and it was like no holds barred, like
- 11:07Speaker 3: it was live. It was a live fumble now that
- 11:09Speaker 3: they could probably would have been ruled an incomplete pass
- 11:12Speaker 3: in a game because it was immediate. Great play by Bentley.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Just stuff that you don't always see. Again, I'm not
- 11:18Speaker 3: saying you never see it, but you don't see it frequently.
- 11:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's the biggest thing for me. I
- 11:23Speaker 5: don't want to get too crazy about how good it
- 11:26Speaker 5: looks for a couple of practices, but the competitiveness with
- 11:31Speaker 5: this back and forth, it reminds you of what it
- 11:33Speaker 5: looked like when they were winning twelve games every year. Right,
- 11:36Speaker 5: It's just it's a back and forth now, it's not
- 11:39Speaker 5: a boy like the offense looks like a mess and
- 11:42Speaker 5: they have a lot of their own problems to worry about.
- 11:44Speaker 5: When they get into eleven on eleven, the defense makes plays,
- 11:48Speaker 5: the offense makes plays, and they truly go back and forth,
- 11:51Speaker 5: which is what you want to see. And that's exactly
- 11:53Speaker 5: what Max said after practice is that this is what
- 11:56Speaker 5: it should look like.
- 11:57Speaker 3: It shouldn't be.
- 11:58Speaker 5: One side's broken in the other side is just trying and.
- 12:01Speaker 1: We're telling you like we see it.
- 12:02Speaker 6: You know.
- 12:03Speaker 1: You know, we've been critical last week early this week
- 12:07Speaker 1: about how the offense has been doing, but you have
- 12:10Speaker 1: to be honest right now and an objective. They they're
- 12:13Speaker 1: doing better. They're doing better for whatever given sorry, for
- 12:18Speaker 1: whatever reason, they look better.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Evan makes a good point about, you know,
- 12:22Speaker 3: the offense because to me, the biggest thing that's changed
- 12:27Speaker 3: is the energy level with with with everybody. And I
- 12:30Speaker 3: think even the defense had sort of gotten in a
- 12:32Speaker 3: rut like you know, yeah, we shut them down, but
- 12:34Speaker 3: they're struggling. They're clearly they're they're searching, they're finding it.
- 12:38Speaker 3: And then yesterday the offense was doing all the talking.
- 12:41Speaker 3: So I thought, you know, like that play that that
- 12:44Speaker 3: Evan mentions with Gonzales, that drew a real big reaction
- 12:48Speaker 3: from the defensive players and they got into it and
- 12:50Speaker 3: you could see that, you know, the energy rise a
- 12:52Speaker 3: little bit, and you know it is many plays. It's
- 12:57Speaker 3: much more frequent that Mac is finding guys now than
- 13:00Speaker 3: than earlier. In camp the last two days, but you
- 13:03Speaker 3: do take it with a grain of salt because of
- 13:05Speaker 3: that pass protection kind of stuff. And when you when
- 13:08Speaker 3: you're missing a when you in Trent Brown and Cole Strange,
- 13:11Speaker 3: you're gonna have pass protection issues. I mean, sorry, that's
- 13:14Speaker 3: going to happen. So you want to sort of temper
- 13:17Speaker 3: it while being enthusiastic about some of the different things
- 13:20Speaker 3: you're seeing.
- 13:20Speaker 1: We should talk about attendance over the last couple of days.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Some noticeable people not really participating or just out just out.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Yeah, Trent Brown and Matthew Judon are out there every day.
- 13:33Speaker 3: They go down to the lower field. For the most part,
- 13:37Speaker 3: Trent Brown hasn't taken a rep in full pads yet,
- 13:40Speaker 3: not not a single one. Judeon really has been a
- 13:43Speaker 3: spectator for the most part. You know, time Montgomery has
- 13:47Speaker 3: now missed six days in a row. You know, Montgomery
- 13:51Speaker 3: and Cole Strange haven't been around the last couple of days.
- 13:54Speaker 3: But it was good to see them come back late
- 13:56Speaker 3: in practice. They came on the field helmets and he
- 14:00Speaker 3: and clearly had done some rehab work somewhere that we
- 14:04Speaker 3: weren't privy to. But maybe they're getting a little closer
- 14:06Speaker 3: than coming back, but they are, you know, the offensive line.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Until you get some of these pieces together, you know,
- 14:14Speaker 3: you're dealing with a couple of rookies and Mafi and
- 14:18Speaker 3: you're dealing with the second year guy with Cody Russeying.
- 14:22Speaker 1: The only right Andrew that's it everything, the only.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Out of what was seeing every day. He's the only
- 14:29Speaker 3: guy without a question.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Now, when Strange comes back, yeah he'll, you know, but
- 14:34Speaker 1: right now, at this moment, David Andrews is the only
- 14:37Speaker 1: healthy starter.
- 14:38Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's tough because I have preconceived concerns, you know,
- 14:45Speaker 5: prior concerns about the offensive line, but we haven't seen
- 14:48Speaker 5: the offensive line out there. So I can't even be
- 14:50Speaker 5: concerned or not concerned anymore because we just haven't seen
- 14:54Speaker 5: the guys out there. So I think a lot of
- 14:56Speaker 5: people are getting a lot of reports and tweets that
- 14:58Speaker 5: they're reading, you know, fans are reading these things that
- 15:01Speaker 5: we're writing and stuff and hearing a lot about how
- 15:03Speaker 5: bad the protection has been and how the offense. But
- 15:06Speaker 5: this isn't the offensive line, right, This isn't the group
- 15:09Speaker 5: that they're going to be hopefully going against the Eagles
- 15:12Speaker 5: in Week one in a month, so.
- 15:13Speaker 1: But it's not good for continuity's sake to have no out.
- 15:17Speaker 3: I agree with that.
- 15:18Speaker 5: I think that that's been a concern since they brought
- 15:21Speaker 5: the put the pads on. I think Antonio Maffi has
- 15:24Speaker 5: looked pretty solid in padded practices, which is I mean,
- 15:28Speaker 5: he's a big guy, so you would expect him to
- 15:30Speaker 5: do that. And Riley Reef looks a lot better in
- 15:33Speaker 5: the positional drills like the one on ones and then
- 15:35Speaker 5: that leverage drill that they do where they set the
- 15:37Speaker 5: edge drill. But then they get into team and when
- 15:41Speaker 5: he's asked to move his feet, it becomes a little
- 15:43Speaker 5: bit more inconsistent. But it's interesting how every single time
- 15:47Speaker 5: he's just asked to move a guy that's in front
- 15:50Speaker 5: of him, he can do that. When he has to
- 15:52Speaker 5: get out on an island and really move his feet,
- 15:55Speaker 5: that's when it can get a little bit inconsistent. So
- 15:57Speaker 5: I feel like Reef has been better that they've put
- 16:00Speaker 5: the pads on. Mafia I certainly think has been better
- 16:03Speaker 5: since they put the pads on. But at this point,
- 16:05Speaker 5: you're evaluating these guys because you think they're going to
- 16:08Speaker 5: be depth. You're not thinking about any of these guys
- 16:10Speaker 5: necessarily starting, besides maybe Reef and even him. I feel like,
- 16:14Speaker 5: ideally you have Brown and McDermott start the season at
- 16:18Speaker 5: the two tackle spots, and Reef is more of a
- 16:20Speaker 5: swing at this stage of his career. But it was
- 16:23Speaker 5: a problem coming in and it still remains a question mark,
- 16:25Speaker 5: especially at tackle, and I think it's a really fair
- 16:29Speaker 5: second guess of how they approach the offseason to not
- 16:31Speaker 5: get somebody with a little bit higher upside at the
- 16:34Speaker 5: tackle position outside of Trent.
- 16:35Speaker 1: We mentioned Gonzales making a play on a tackle earlier.
- 16:41Speaker 1: He's been flashing. He's doing okay.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, And I also want to get Evan's
- 16:47Speaker 3: thoughts on this too, because I thought coverage wise, it's
- 16:51Speaker 3: kind of giving up more plays than he was early
- 16:53Speaker 3: in camp he was just lights out. Yeah, I think
- 16:56Speaker 3: the last couple of days, especially today, I thought this
- 17:00Speaker 3: some plays that he's been involved in, and I wonder
- 17:04Speaker 3: if there's some zone stuff like the deep over to
- 17:08Speaker 3: Troy Nixon look that goes between him and Peppers. Maybe
- 17:11Speaker 3: he like passed him off to Peppers and maybe Peppers
- 17:13Speaker 3: was late getting over the top. But he's been involved
- 17:17Speaker 3: with more completions lately than we saw the first five
- 17:21Speaker 3: six days.
- 17:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that the best way to put it
- 17:24Speaker 5: is to temper expectations and remember that he is just
- 17:27Speaker 5: a rookie. I think he's going to give up some
- 17:29Speaker 5: plays this year. And that's not to say that I
- 17:32Speaker 5: think he's a bad player, because everybody knows how high
- 17:35Speaker 5: I am on Christian Gonzales. But every rookie gives up
- 17:38Speaker 5: plays like that, You're not going to go out in
- 17:40Speaker 5: the league and completely shut down guys year one. That
- 17:43Speaker 5: really doesn't happen all that often, especially the way the
- 17:46Speaker 5: game is played now. I look at a guy like
- 17:48Speaker 5: like Trayvon Diggs is one of the best corners in
- 17:50Speaker 5: the league. He gave up like eight hundred yards and
- 17:52Speaker 5: coverage his rookie season. You know that's gonna happen for
- 17:55Speaker 5: some of these guys. I think the one thing with
- 17:56Speaker 5: Gonzalez that I've noticed is just He's going up against
- 17:59Speaker 5: Parker a lot, and Parker's not going to run by him.
- 18:04Speaker 5: He runs a low four three. Parker's not going to
- 18:07Speaker 5: run by him. And so the one thing that I
- 18:09Speaker 5: would like to see Gonzalez do a little bit more
- 18:12Speaker 5: is sit on some of the shorter stuff, the comebacks,
- 18:15Speaker 5: the outs, things like that, you know they hit Parker
- 18:18Speaker 5: on and out in that two minute period at the
- 18:20Speaker 5: end of practice, that that should be a play that
- 18:22Speaker 5: Gonzales over time is going to be able to be
- 18:26Speaker 5: all over because he shouldn't be worried about DeVante Parker
- 18:30Speaker 5: running by them. So I think interesting, I think that's
- 18:33Speaker 5: some of the things that he'll he'll figure out his
- 18:36Speaker 5: anticipation and what, Okay, what can I what can I
- 18:40Speaker 5: just not worry about?
- 18:41Speaker 3: And what what do I have?
- 18:42Speaker 5: What routes on the routree do I have to be
- 18:44Speaker 5: sitting on and and need to think about here? And
- 18:47Speaker 5: that sort of thing I think comes with practice repetitions obviously,
- 18:51Speaker 5: but I think even more so meeting rooms and film
- 18:55Speaker 5: and like that sort of thing. So when they get
- 18:57Speaker 5: into week one and it's a J. Brown and Devant
- 19:00Speaker 5: whoever he has, he's going to be thinking to himself,
- 19:03Speaker 5: these are the three routes that I need to cover
- 19:05Speaker 5: because I have help over here and I know he's
- 19:08Speaker 5: not gonna beat me over there, and that sort of thing.
- 19:10Speaker 5: And those are the things that the great corners do.
- 19:12Speaker 1: That's like well corner cut corners.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Yeah, literally, that's good.
- 19:16Speaker 5: I mean, Gilmour used to talk about it all the
- 19:18Speaker 5: time that with this system, especially in man coverage, if
- 19:22Speaker 5: you have help to the middle of the field, I'm
- 19:24Speaker 5: not gonna worry about the post because I have a
- 19:26Speaker 5: safety that's that's sitting on the post. So I'm gonna
- 19:29Speaker 5: worry about things underneath me and things over the top,
- 19:33Speaker 5: you know, in terms of the outside stuff. So he'll
- 19:35Speaker 5: get there and.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Then you don't get the help and it's palms up
- 19:38Speaker 1: after the play.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Well, so the other part of that that that's interesting
- 19:41Speaker 3: that Evan talked about. Like so that was during the
- 19:44Speaker 3: late two minute drill Fred that you watched and there
- 19:46Speaker 3: were like two I think it was like three outs
- 19:49Speaker 3: that Parker caught a couple of mon gonzales. But you
- 19:52Speaker 3: don't you don't know when you watch it. You can
- 19:54Speaker 3: just say, oh, geez, you know he's not gonna run
- 19:56Speaker 3: buy him. What are you doing? You give him too
- 19:58Speaker 3: much cushion. But you don't know is if there's a
- 20:00Speaker 3: situation that Belichick is sort of created, right, I mean,
- 20:03Speaker 3: that could have been a TD. Don't give up a
- 20:05Speaker 3: TD exactly. You know, you know we're up for they
- 20:08Speaker 3: need a touchdown. There's only thirty seconds left. They got
- 20:11Speaker 3: no timeouts. We'll give them all the ELTs they want, right,
- 20:14Speaker 3: you know, we just can't give up a chunk play. Yeah,
- 20:16Speaker 3: And I'm not trying to make excuses now. I don't know.
- 20:18Speaker 3: I don't know what the situation is. They did a
- 20:21Speaker 3: lot of second and third down stuff today during the
- 20:23Speaker 3: regular team periods when they had the two minute drill.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Who knows, you know, if it was scripted, you know,
- 20:28Speaker 3: So I don't want to make it sound like I'm saying, oh,
- 20:31Speaker 3: you know, Paul's the only one that's not high on
- 20:33Speaker 3: the first round pick. No. I mean I wrote something
- 20:36Speaker 3: over the weekend. I've been incredibly impressed with his his
- 20:41Speaker 3: just sort of toughness, his physicality, and just every play
- 20:45Speaker 3: like he's where he's supposed to be. He's he's in position.
- 20:49Speaker 3: He's given up more catches lately. I thought the one
- 20:52Speaker 3: that may have been OPI yesterday with Parker, and then
- 20:56Speaker 3: today there was a similar kind of situation with Bourne,
- 20:58Speaker 3: only there was no contact. Look like he kind of
- 21:00Speaker 3: slipped and lost his footing as.
- 21:01Speaker 5: The ball came yeah along the sideline.
- 21:03Speaker 3: I think it was a play from like the eighteen
- 21:05Speaker 3: they got it down like at the two. Nice another
- 21:09Speaker 3: nice connection from Mac. Yeah, a beautiful throat to Kendrick
- 21:12Speaker 3: Bourne just outside the pylon.
- 21:13Speaker 1: And he's also on a few plays recognized things early
- 21:18Speaker 1: like screens and he's flashed in the black.
- 21:20Speaker 3: That's where he made that play and the tackle for loss.
- 21:22Speaker 3: I mean, he was like a yeah, he was like
- 21:23Speaker 3: a missile on that point.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:24Speaker 5: I have no concerns about him and man coverage because
- 21:27Speaker 5: he's just so darn smooth that once they figure out
- 21:29Speaker 5: the anticipation and some of the different things that they're
- 21:32Speaker 5: going to coach him up on that his movement skills
- 21:34Speaker 5: are just off the charts, so he's going to be
- 21:36Speaker 5: able to cover people in man. But he did have
- 21:38Speaker 5: some issues in college and zone with getting high loaded,
- 21:42Speaker 5: losing guys in zone like things like that, and almost
- 21:46Speaker 5: like covering grass instead of actually covering somebody in particular.
- 21:50Speaker 5: And that's something that a lot of the draft knicks
- 21:53Speaker 5: said was a little bit of a knock in terms
- 21:55Speaker 5: of the film. So I think that's some of the things.
- 21:57Speaker 5: Like with the Kendrick Bourne play, he's got somebody in
- 22:00Speaker 5: the flat, then he's got the corner route filling in
- 22:02Speaker 5: over the top and he kind of gets stuck in between.
- 22:05Speaker 5: And that's something that I think they'll figure out over
- 22:07Speaker 5: the course of time with the distribution. But is that's
- 22:11Speaker 5: one of the things that from a football perspective, you know,
- 22:13Speaker 5: hear all about this stuff about like his attitude and
- 22:16Speaker 5: his demeanor and things like that. I think all that
- 22:19Speaker 5: is was way way overblown. But from a football perspective,
- 22:23Speaker 5: he was definitely better in man coverage than in zone
- 22:26Speaker 5: coverage in college.
- 22:27Speaker 1: A little bit of a situation today with Jack Jones
- 22:31Speaker 1: on a play where I don't know if he was
- 22:35Speaker 1: trash talking Kendrick Bourne.
- 22:36Speaker 3: I don't know exactly what happened. It looked like he
- 22:39Speaker 3: dove and prevented a catch to Bourne near the sideline,
- 22:43Speaker 3: and then they got up and there was a lot
- 22:45Speaker 3: of people in between. It looked like he may have
- 22:48Speaker 3: been celebrating the play and maybe he got a little
- 22:50Speaker 3: over zealous, maybe he got in Bourne's face or something,
- 22:53Speaker 3: and it looked like he was sent off the field.
- 22:58Speaker 3: And now I didn't physically see Bill Belichick go over
- 23:01Speaker 3: and tell him to leave, But my guess is that's
- 23:02Speaker 3: what happened, because I don't think anybody else would have
- 23:05Speaker 3: the juice to send a player off, and then he
- 23:08Speaker 3: left for about twenty twenty five minutes, came back and
- 23:12Speaker 3: as he left, Pepper's sort of walked him almost all
- 23:15Speaker 3: the way to the top of the stairs, arm around him,
- 23:18Speaker 3: clearly trying to do some mentoring. And when he came back,
- 23:23Speaker 3: he was on a knee by himself, separated from the
- 23:26Speaker 3: whole team. Matt grow came over and talked to him
- 23:28Speaker 3: for a little while. Jalen Mills came over and spent
- 23:30Speaker 3: some time with him, but he didn't do anything with
- 23:33Speaker 3: the team the rest of the way until practice was
- 23:35Speaker 3: over and they were cooling down.
- 23:37Speaker 1: When he came back, he was still in pads and everything.
- 23:40Speaker 5: Yes, yeah, I thought I didn't see exactly how it escalated,
- 23:44Speaker 5: but I hate to speculate because we don't know. You know,
- 23:48Speaker 5: some people were speculating that maybe he was kicked out
- 23:50Speaker 5: of practice. I don't know exactly what happened, but he
- 23:54Speaker 5: came late to practice.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Oh, but he's just so you know, he came around
- 23:59Speaker 3: the same time he comes every day. Now, maybe that's
- 24:02Speaker 3: been an issue. Yeah, he's one of the last ones
- 24:04Speaker 3: out every day, so he's.
- 24:05Speaker 5: A little late to practice. And then about whatever that
- 24:08Speaker 5: was halfway through wherever that was. All of a sudden,
- 24:11Speaker 5: we see him walking off the field like he got
- 24:13Speaker 5: kicked out.
- 24:13Speaker 3: It was about ten twenty that he that he left
- 24:16Speaker 3: and he came back at about ten forty five.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Well, he has to go through security, so it takes
- 24:20Speaker 1: him longer.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Oh, that's that's not what we're looking for. That's not
- 24:24Speaker 3: what we're looking for from the boss. All right, okay,
- 24:27Speaker 3: all right, and you don't need to encourage you soon
- 24:29Speaker 3: too soon?
- 24:30Speaker 1: Yes, O, can you make those jokes? Yeah, but really,
- 24:34Speaker 1: to me, the story's mac. He's looking better both on
- 24:38Speaker 1: the field and just body language. Spend some time talking
- 24:43Speaker 1: with Bill today, So all you people that you know
- 24:45Speaker 1: they're not talking, they were talking today and it would look,
- 24:49Speaker 1: you know, in a positive way. So you know, put
- 24:52Speaker 1: away your pens and and you know, for a couple
- 24:56Speaker 1: of days you can't say that they're not getting along.
- 24:58Speaker 1: They are, So that that's good, that's good news those conversations. No,
- 25:05Speaker 1: but you could you know what Bill is like.
- 25:08Speaker 5: He also walked it up the stairs with Bill O'Brien
- 25:11Speaker 5: and I love that. I don't know, I'm a sucker
- 25:12Speaker 5: for that kind of stuff.
- 25:14Speaker 3: I've seen him with Bill O'Brian a lot.
- 25:15Speaker 5: Because when he you know, just remembering like McDaniel's his
- 25:20Speaker 5: rookie season, McDaniels just attached to the attached to the hip.
- 25:22Speaker 5: They would walk into practice together, and they're not when
- 25:25Speaker 5: they're chatting, they're not chatting about like you know, where
- 25:28Speaker 5: they went out to dinner last night. They're talking ball.
- 25:30Speaker 5: Like there you can tell that they're talking about something
- 25:32Speaker 5: that they were probably just talking about in you know,
- 25:35Speaker 5: a pre practice meeting or something like that, and and
- 25:38Speaker 5: now they're continuing the conversation. So I think, you know, look,
- 25:42Speaker 5: I was critical of Mac on Tuesday because, unlike some
- 25:45Speaker 5: of my colleagues, I have a pretty high standard for
- 25:48Speaker 5: the quarterback. Yeah, shots fired, I have a pretty I
- 25:53Speaker 5: have a pretty high standard for the quarterback. I'm not
- 25:55Speaker 5: gonna baby him like, I'm not gonna go out there
- 25:57Speaker 5: and you make a couple of dinks and dunks and
- 25:59Speaker 5: oh a great practice, Like, I'm not going to do that.
- 26:02Speaker 5: The last couple of days, he's pushing the ball down
- 26:04Speaker 5: the field more. Yesterday was one of his best practices
- 26:07Speaker 5: I've seen him have since probably maybe ever honestly in
- 26:11Speaker 5: training camp.
- 26:12Speaker 3: And it just looks.
- 26:14Speaker 5: You can tell that a lot of the players are
- 26:16Speaker 5: hitting the way that they're drawn up on the whiteboard,
- 26:19Speaker 5: like exactly how they look in the playbook, the timing,
- 26:21Speaker 5: the receivers, you know, all of it coming together, and
- 26:24Speaker 5: that's really what's been encouraging. And I think Juju kind
- 26:27Speaker 5: of laid it out really well yesterday when he said
- 26:30Speaker 5: that they've been installing this entire time, and this week
- 26:34Speaker 5: they started repeating plays and now what you're seeing is
- 26:38Speaker 5: not they're mastering the plays that they've already installed. And
- 26:42Speaker 5: I think that's a really encouraging thing as well. So
- 26:45Speaker 5: a couple of good downfield throws today wasn't as good
- 26:48Speaker 5: as yesterday. A couple guys, you know, interception and one
- 26:51Speaker 5: pass break up.
- 26:52Speaker 1: He's been accurate on the sideline passes too, and those
- 26:55Speaker 1: are tougher passes than they look, because if you're throwing
- 26:58Speaker 1: from the middle of the hash, if the ball is
- 27:00Speaker 1: only like six yards downfield, it's twenty five yards across
- 27:05Speaker 1: the field. Uh, you know, so it's a long pass.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Takes a while to get there. So you know he
- 27:11Speaker 1: throws them.
- 27:12Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you have to be at one's coming.
- 27:13Speaker 3: You couldn't have me just be Johnny Sunshine.
- 27:15Speaker 1: You have to be out the hold with those and
- 27:18Speaker 1: you know, only put it in a place where your
- 27:20Speaker 1: receiver has a chance. And I think he's been good
- 27:22Speaker 1: on that.
- 27:23Speaker 5: You know better, I think. And to me, I don't
- 27:26Speaker 5: know if it's necessarily that the the arm strength has improved.
- 27:29Speaker 5: I think the anticipation has improved, and that comes from
- 27:32Speaker 5: being in an offense that makes sense and an offense
- 27:34Speaker 5: that that's that's good.
- 27:36Speaker 3: It's just that like they did, they threw a ton
- 27:39Speaker 3: of outs today, all three quarterbacks. There was one toward
- 27:43Speaker 3: the end. You know, they did that staggered red zone stuff.
- 27:46Speaker 3: They started high red zone worked their way. It's like
- 27:48Speaker 3: eighteen thirteen eight you know whatever. That's a dry trace. Well, no,
- 27:53Speaker 3: it's a situation. It's a it's a scripted situation. They
- 27:56Speaker 3: put the ball.
- 27:57Speaker 1: At a yard line, right, it's a drive, Yeah, go ahead.
- 27:59Speaker 3: No, it's not a dry because if the play is incomplete,
- 28:01Speaker 3: it goes to the four yard line. The next place, well,
- 28:03Speaker 3: a drive would be we have to complete a pass
- 28:05Speaker 3: to get it to the four. So I just want
- 28:07Speaker 3: to make sure that the listeners understand what actually happened,
- 28:10Speaker 3: not what you call it. Anyway, Trace mcsulely threw one
- 28:15Speaker 3: to Rally Webb on and out. He threw it like
- 28:19Speaker 3: a good two seconds before Web got out of the
- 28:22Speaker 3: break perfect. It was like, how can they do it
- 28:27Speaker 3: like that? But they just but they have to do
- 28:29Speaker 3: they just can't repeat it. No, But I mean like
- 28:32Speaker 3: he clearly has the ability to do it. But if
- 28:34Speaker 3: you've watched mcsulely throw camp, I keep calling him nuklear loose.
- 28:38Speaker 3: He's going to hit the bull every other throw. And
- 28:42Speaker 3: that throw looked like like Brady would have been jealous
- 28:45Speaker 3: of it. The timing in the placement of that pass.
- 28:49Speaker 3: And again it's Trace mcsolely to Rally Webb on play
- 28:53Speaker 3: like one hundred and six today. I don't want to
- 28:56Speaker 3: make too much of it.
- 28:57Speaker 5: Trace McSorley has got some arm talent, like I throw
- 29:00Speaker 5: it with special I didn't know that about him because
- 29:02Speaker 5: I always you know, the the the script on Trace
- 29:06Speaker 5: mcswil is not very positive, right, you know his time
- 29:08Speaker 5: at Penn State, like all of it is not.
- 29:10Speaker 3: It was almost a runner exclusively at Penn State.
- 29:13Speaker 5: Yeah, it is not a very positive scouting report. But
- 29:16Speaker 5: he's made I don't want to say this because I
- 29:18Speaker 5: think people. I'm gonna say it anyways, but like his
- 29:21Speaker 5: his arm might be the best out of three guys.
- 29:22Speaker 5: Like he can really put some some steam on the ball.
- 29:26Speaker 5: But it's just like Paul said it, you don't know
- 29:28Speaker 5: where it's going.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Speaking of running quarterbacks, the name we have not heard,
- 29:32Speaker 1: or at least I haven't in a while is Malie Cunningham.
- 29:34Speaker 5: Yeah, it totally disappeared. Yeah, I think even I don't
- 29:38Speaker 5: think he's had a single catch that's been notable in
- 29:42Speaker 5: team drills. And I think he's exactly what we thought
- 29:46Speaker 5: he was, which is he'll be a scout team quarterback
- 29:49Speaker 5: and mimic Lamar Jackson or whatever running new Jalen Hurts,
- 29:53Speaker 5: I guess I should say.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Yeah, we talked about Christian Gonzalez, who was the first
- 29:59Speaker 1: round pick. Evan you today, what do you think of
- 30:02Speaker 1: Keon White? Why don't you tell me? Yeah?
- 30:05Speaker 5: I look, I still feel that he's a downhill linear player.
- 30:10Speaker 5: He's not a finesse guy. He's not gonna He's not
- 30:13Speaker 5: josh U j Right, he's not coming off the ball.
- 30:15Speaker 5: He's not putting together six seven different pass rush moves
- 30:18Speaker 5: to get around guys. But his bull rush speed to power,
- 30:22Speaker 5: ability to dent the pocket is legit. He can move
- 30:25Speaker 5: the pocket. He's been a handful for the backup offensive
- 30:29Speaker 5: line and team drills. I like to see him get
- 30:31Speaker 5: elevated and play a little bit more with the first
- 30:34Speaker 5: team defense. But he's he's got a legitimate upper body power,
- 30:39Speaker 5: speed to power type of rush to him that it's
- 30:42Speaker 5: gonna collapse the pocket in the interior.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Do you think he has any future against the run
- 30:47Speaker 1: early downs?
- 30:48Speaker 5: He does pretty well in those those edge setting drills.
- 30:52Speaker 5: Maybe a little bit too far upfield for their liking,
- 30:54Speaker 5: but he's able to hold his ground and do that
- 30:57Speaker 5: sort of thing. I still think that he's best with
- 30:59Speaker 5: his hand in the dirt. I think when he stands
- 31:01Speaker 5: up he's a little bit he's a little bit too
- 31:04Speaker 5: big for that. He's two hundred and eighty five pounds.
- 31:06Speaker 5: I just don't love him doing that. But in terms
- 31:08Speaker 5: of put your hand in the dirt and come downhill
- 31:11Speaker 5: at the line of scrimmage, I think he's gonna be
- 31:13Speaker 5: effective player. And my guess is is that as it
- 31:16Speaker 5: comes along here a little bit, they'll start using him
- 31:19Speaker 5: as a penetrator on stunts and line games. You know,
- 31:23Speaker 5: to go in and really get that first initial push
- 31:26Speaker 5: so that a guy can come and wrap inside, you know,
- 31:28Speaker 5: a Jude on Anucha. Well we'll be the rap player
- 31:31Speaker 5: and he'll be able to dent the pocket and make
- 31:34Speaker 5: that pocket a space for those guys to come around
- 31:37Speaker 5: and set that pick. So he's got he's got all
- 31:41Speaker 5: the physical tools to be that that powerful rusher. I
- 31:45Speaker 5: just I still don't really see like a great block defeater.
- 31:48Speaker 5: Like I don't see a guy that's dancing around blocks
- 31:51Speaker 5: or getting off box consistently. But he can push the pocket.
- 31:54Speaker 3: He's big, Like that's the best thing I could say
- 31:56Speaker 3: about him right now. He's big. I don't I haven't
- 31:59Speaker 3: seen it, you know who. Actually, maybe it's just because
- 32:01Speaker 3: of the fifty ones. Ronnie Perkins has flashed a little bit.
- 32:05Speaker 3: I've heard his name in past rushing. I think he
- 32:07Speaker 3: had another you know quote quotes Sack today.
- 32:11Speaker 5: Went right around Andrew Stuber, see right around him.
- 32:16Speaker 3: He knows exactly the playoffs.
- 32:17Speaker 5: He's got a little bit of of that dip around,
- 32:20Speaker 5: you know, that speed and dip around the edge that
- 32:22Speaker 5: he'd like to see or bend. But when people, when
- 32:25Speaker 5: tackles get hands on him, he's gotten no power to
- 32:28Speaker 5: his game whatsoever, and he gets washed down. I think
- 32:31Speaker 5: it was reef throw him in one on ones. Just
- 32:35Speaker 5: if you don't beat me off the line, if you're
- 32:37Speaker 5: that first step doesn't doesn't get me concerned, then if
- 32:41Speaker 5: I can get hands on, it's it's over with with Ronnie.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:44Speaker 1: And I you know, in terms of just uh, some
- 32:47Speaker 1: of the intangibles, I think the team plays better when
- 32:50Speaker 1: they play more heavy metal music.
- 32:52Speaker 3: Is that right? Yeah? If you notice that, do you
- 32:55Speaker 3: do you chart that?
- 32:56Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, I think that's the music they played best to,
- 33:00Speaker 1: at least the offense. Okay, So I just just want
- 33:04Speaker 1: to throw.
- 33:04Speaker 5: That into a little housekeeping note, housekeeping, housekeeping. The Patriots
- 33:09Speaker 5: are practicing on Sunday.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Yeah, they've they've added that practice back. So it looks like,
- 33:16Speaker 1: you know, with with that being with that adding to it,
- 33:20Speaker 1: it's a possibility that Tuesday's practice next week will be
- 33:23Speaker 1: the last public practice.
- 33:26Speaker 5: I tweeted that and then I deleted it because I
- 33:29Speaker 5: wasn't short.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Well I'm not either, but I'm just thinking that could
- 33:33Speaker 1: it looks like that will be the last practice.
- 33:35Speaker 5: But so maybe we should talk about this more off air.
- 33:38Speaker 5: But on Thursday, they have the preseason game. Then Friday
- 33:42Speaker 5: Saturday will be off because they always have two days
- 33:44Speaker 5: off after a game, So technically Sunday should be a practice.
- 33:50Speaker 3: Here.
- 33:51Speaker 1: It is now no next like a week Sunday. Yeah, yeah,
- 33:55Speaker 1: but it probably I don't think it's going to be open,
- 33:57Speaker 1: but I don't know.
- 33:58Speaker 5: So it's going to be open to us spit close
- 34:00Speaker 5: to the public, right, which no offense to the public
- 34:03Speaker 5: is the best kind of practice, because that's when they
- 34:04Speaker 5: actually really start to do some of the stuff that
- 34:06Speaker 5: right they won't show.
- 34:07Speaker 6: Right.
- 34:08Speaker 3: I'm thoroughly confused, but someone will let me know where
- 34:11Speaker 3: what I have to do. At some point we'll talk
- 34:13Speaker 3: about it.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Yeah. So yeah, I think there should be an announcement
- 34:17Speaker 1: pretty soon about or maybe they've already announced it that
- 34:20Speaker 1: Sunday is now a public practice.
- 34:24Speaker 3: So Sunday, Monday, Tuesday of this coming week you think
- 34:28Speaker 3: will be the last That Tuesday could be the last practice.
- 34:31Speaker 1: It's just an educated guess.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Okay, so you haven't necessarily heard anything. Yeah, that would
- 34:37Speaker 3: I mean, I think that would make some sense. And
- 34:39Speaker 3: I do think that it'll be interesting to see if
- 34:42Speaker 3: they continue with camp rules and have the media be
- 34:46Speaker 3: able to stay and watch the whole practice or go
- 34:48Speaker 3: to sort of their end season, and they just have
- 34:51Speaker 3: They've done both that. They have done a couple of
- 34:54Speaker 3: practices here and there. They have allowed the media to
- 34:57Speaker 3: continue to go to even when the public because no longer.
- 35:01Speaker 5: I think, I mean, look, they can they always circumvent
- 35:04Speaker 5: the rules, no offense to the when it comes to us.
- 35:07Speaker 5: I'm not saying, but I think technically that is a
- 35:09Speaker 5: training camp practice that they have to have open to
- 35:12Speaker 5: the media.
- 35:13Speaker 1: So when does training camp officially end.
- 35:15Speaker 5: It's a certain number of practices. I don't know it
- 35:18Speaker 5: off the top of my head, but they have to.
- 35:20Speaker 5: It's once they get to a certain number of practices
- 35:23Speaker 5: is when they can start closing. I think them down.
- 35:25Speaker 3: I think Evan's right, and I think it's somewhere in
- 35:27Speaker 3: the neighborhood of fifteen. But I do not know that.
- 35:29Speaker 5: That's a that's an Andrew Callahan question.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Is okay, So.
- 35:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's it's amazing. I feel like we
- 35:37Speaker 3: just started. But I mean we have eight practices done already.
- 35:40Speaker 3: I know it's it's flying, but.
- 35:42Speaker 1: You know we're going to have the you know, ability
- 35:45Speaker 1: to watch those joint practices. So for in terms of
- 35:48Speaker 1: the media.
- 35:48Speaker 3: There's also count as training camp practices.
- 35:50Speaker 1: By the way, Yes, so that's that's you know, that's
- 35:53Speaker 1: really that's good that those are important eight.
- 35:56Speaker 3: And tomorrow's nine, you know, and then you can do Sunday, Monday, Tuesday,
- 36:00Speaker 3: that's twelve, and then you have four more.
- 36:02Speaker 1: That's sixteen.
- 36:04Speaker 3: My guess is that's got to be around that's it
- 36:07Speaker 3: around the limit, you know, Like I don't again, I
- 36:09Speaker 3: think somewhere around fifteen.
- 36:12Speaker 5: I know.
- 36:13Speaker 3: Joint practices are supposed to be open, you know, to
- 36:16Speaker 3: the media, not necessarily the public, but to the media.
- 36:20Speaker 1: But they're not exempted. They're not, like I don't think so, Yeah, I.
- 36:23Speaker 3: Don't think they're they're exempted. But yeah, I we'll find
- 36:27Speaker 3: out soon enough. Oh that's a killer. Yeah, I don't
- 36:29Speaker 3: know if I will be here.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Okay, what else? What else has kind of jumped out?
- 36:39Speaker 5: I don't know. I'm trying not to. I'm not I'm
- 36:41Speaker 5: trying not to ride the roller coaster too much of.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Like Tuesday to Wednesday.
- 36:46Speaker 5: Just like one day I have this reaction the next thing, right,
- 36:49Speaker 5: you know, but we all say what you saw. That's
- 36:52Speaker 5: the one thing I'll say is just like at what point, Like,
- 36:56Speaker 5: it's great that the offense is clicking the last couple
- 36:59Speaker 5: of days, Like you have to also say that the
- 37:01Speaker 5: defense to start to give up some plays. And I
- 37:03Speaker 5: think the back and forth is great.
- 37:05Speaker 3: What did I say to you earlier?
- 37:06Speaker 5: Yeah, But the one area in particular that I've noticed
- 37:10Speaker 5: that's and I think you said Paul that if a
- 37:13Speaker 5: live pass rush is happening, then this looks a lot different.
- 37:17Speaker 5: Right with Ma's getting hit while he's making some of
- 37:19Speaker 5: these throws, then who knows if they're actually is you know,
- 37:23Speaker 5: if he's going eighteen for twenty four in a camp practice.
- 37:27Speaker 5: They've had some issues covering the flats in past coverage
- 37:30Speaker 5: where that if Mac wants to throw a check down
- 37:34Speaker 5: or throw a quick flat route to one of the
- 37:36Speaker 5: tight ends or something like that, that's been there for
- 37:38Speaker 5: three straight days. And I don't know if it's the
- 37:41Speaker 5: type of you know, without being able to go back
- 37:44Speaker 5: and watch the film of the practice, if it's the
- 37:46Speaker 5: type of coverage that they're playing or what have you.
- 37:49Speaker 5: But there's been a couple of times where I've scratched
- 37:52Speaker 5: my head and been like, do they even have a
- 37:54Speaker 5: flat defender? Like who's supposed to have the flat.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Well, do you think that has anything to do with
- 37:58Speaker 1: the offensive scheme.
- 38:00Speaker 5: That it's possible, you know, they're skiing that open. Yeah,
- 38:02Speaker 5: I mean certainly, certain in certain circumstances. Absolutely, And I
- 38:06Speaker 5: think that that's Look, if you're going to give up something,
- 38:08Speaker 5: you're going to give up the five yard check down
- 38:10Speaker 5: in the flat. You're not going to give up the
- 38:12Speaker 5: fifteen yard completion down the field. But I think that
- 38:16Speaker 5: if you look at the way they've been playing it,
- 38:19Speaker 5: that that's teams are going to take that that's a problem.
- 38:23Speaker 3: It's been a play that they've had trouble with. I
- 38:24Speaker 3: agree with Evan, and it's been all three groups. Mic
- 38:28Speaker 3: surely had a little swing out today to JJ Taylor
- 38:31Speaker 3: to Taylor as soon as he threw it, he put
- 38:34Speaker 3: his hands in the air like you do. Like that
- 38:36Speaker 3: has worked. I don't know if it's something that there's
- 38:40Speaker 3: a communication issue with the defense on those and they're
- 38:43Speaker 3: just not recognizing. But you they're very similar patterns to
- 38:47Speaker 3: the plays. I'm not telling you they're all the same play,
- 38:51Speaker 3: but they have definitely struggled with them. And some of
- 38:55Speaker 3: the stuff with Juju I think down low, you know,
- 38:58Speaker 3: has been an issue with almost like a little tunnel
- 39:00Speaker 3: screen today. Yeah, ye completely looked like it got them
- 39:04Speaker 3: off guard. Yeah.
- 39:06Speaker 5: I think some of that communication and this comes back
- 39:09Speaker 5: to Bill O'Brien and something that he's I think really
- 39:12Speaker 5: brought is those little goal line routes. They run a
- 39:16Speaker 5: bunch of different things out of those two receiver sides,
- 39:19Speaker 5: and yesterday hit Juju and there was definitely some sort
- 39:22Speaker 5: of breakdown in the back end on that touchdown at
- 39:24Speaker 5: the end of practice and then Juju walked right in
- 39:27Speaker 5: on like a little tunnel screen or pick play there today.
- 39:30Speaker 5: And on the one hand, you want to say, well,
- 39:33Speaker 5: that's Bill O'Brien, right, he's drawing these things up, and
- 39:35Speaker 5: that's that's a good thing. But I think there has
- 39:38Speaker 5: been a little.
- 39:40Speaker 3: Those up too. Yeah, you know, just looking ahead and
- 39:43Speaker 3: being concerned.
- 39:43Speaker 5: Yeah, I think there's maybe a little bit of i'd
- 39:46Speaker 5: just say miscommunication, certainly, especially with that Juju one yesterday.
- 39:51Speaker 5: Both Jalen Mills and John Jones looked at each other
- 39:53Speaker 5: after the play with the Poms like, what.
- 39:55Speaker 4: Well, don't you feel like this could be good for
- 39:56Speaker 4: them jumping? Don't you think it's good for the defense
- 40:00Speaker 4: to see.
- 40:00Speaker 3: Some of that stuff. I mean last year offense one
- 40:04Speaker 3: on one, you know, and there's no motion and there's
- 40:06Speaker 3: no pre Those defensive guys have specifically talked about how
- 40:10Speaker 3: much the offense is dialed up for them, you know,
- 40:12Speaker 3: in terms of motion and misdirection and all kinds of
- 40:16Speaker 3: combination routes, and how good they think that is for them,
- 40:19Speaker 3: you know, And we've kind of turned it like the
- 40:22Speaker 3: way the defense was playing early, like they can mix
- 40:24Speaker 3: and match so much in the secondary that they have
- 40:26Speaker 3: the safeties up they have in the back. Seems like
- 40:29Speaker 3: everybody's had a chance to be center field, everybody's had
- 40:32Speaker 3: a chance to be up around the line. So that's
- 40:34Speaker 3: good for the offense too. The point that I made
- 40:36Speaker 3: to Fred Evan was, you know, the first part of camp,
- 40:39Speaker 3: it was every day it was like, well the defense
- 40:42Speaker 3: is playing well, but you know, the offense look bad,
- 40:45Speaker 3: like bad days of practice. Then the offense is a
- 40:47Speaker 3: couple of days of success and it's like great practice today.
- 40:51Speaker 3: Well the defense doesn't play all that right, but it's okay.
- 40:54Speaker 3: And as Fred said, because we're more worried about the offense.
- 40:57Speaker 5: So yeah, you definitely trust the defense is going to
- 41:01Speaker 5: be good more than the offense and the trust the
- 41:03Speaker 5: system and all that stuff. And I'd also say today
- 41:05Speaker 5: it was more of a back and forth. I mean,
- 41:07Speaker 5: Kyle Duggar picked off Mac.
- 41:08Speaker 3: Today was a good day for I thought, a good practice.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:12Speaker 5: Yeah, John Jones broke up a pass that was one
- 41:15Speaker 5: of those that I still think Mac is working on of.
- 41:17Speaker 5: He thinks the zone is flooded, but it ain't flooded.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Let's let's the only thing the only thing missing on
- 41:23Speaker 3: that throw was a slight move to one side and
- 41:26Speaker 3: making that throw the other side. He does not see
- 41:29Speaker 3: that guy. Yeah, it's the guy coming from the like
- 41:32Speaker 3: he's if he's underneath, if he's got a guy trailing
- 41:35Speaker 3: from left to right, he does not see the defensive
- 41:37Speaker 3: back underneath going right.
- 41:39Speaker 1: To left right.
- 41:39Speaker 3: Talking the Dougger interception, Yeah.
- 41:41Speaker 5: So the Dugger interception was just robber coverage, just man
- 41:44Speaker 5: coverage with the spin with the robber. And then Adrian
- 41:46Speaker 5: Phillips got zappy on the same exact coverage later on
- 41:50Speaker 5: in practice. So both those guys lost Robert defenders today.
- 41:53Speaker 5: But with the one with John Jones there, it's just
- 41:56Speaker 5: a flood concept. So they're running the vertical through and
- 41:58Speaker 5: then the corner route and then the flat and they're
- 42:00Speaker 5: trying to flood the sideline, and for some reason he
- 42:04Speaker 5: Mac there's the same play that he threw in sevens
- 42:07Speaker 5: that that Marcus Jones almost picked off as it passed
- 42:11Speaker 5: for Juju that underneath flat defender is gonna he's gonna
- 42:14Speaker 5: split the difference, right, He's gonna like kind of hang
- 42:17Speaker 5: out in the middle and but also lean a little
- 42:21Speaker 5: bit more towards the corner to try to encourage the
- 42:23Speaker 5: flat And for some reason Mac, it flashes open for
- 42:27Speaker 5: a second, but it closes really quickly, and he just
- 42:30Speaker 5: doesn't have I don't know if it's the timing or
- 42:33Speaker 5: if it's arm strength to fit it in there before
- 42:36Speaker 5: the defender closes. So those are those ones that still
- 42:41Speaker 5: look a little bit a little bit shaky.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I had high hopes for Mike Oseeki. Should I
- 42:48Speaker 1: start tempering that.
- 42:50Speaker 3: I think it's interesting. I mean, I I don't know.
- 42:52Speaker 4: I mean, we've noticed Sokole has been, you know, getting
- 42:54Speaker 4: more snaps and you know whatever. And I were talking
- 42:57Speaker 4: about up top, was it seems like they probably like
- 42:59Speaker 4: him as a blocker a litle bit more. So, maybe
- 43:00Speaker 4: you're going to see some early down too tight end
- 43:03Speaker 4: with with Socole in the mix, I think he's one
- 43:05Speaker 4: of the one of the wild cards. I've just disappointed
- 43:08Speaker 4: that Kasicki hasn't shown up more in the red zone
- 43:10Speaker 4: because he was pretty productive during OTAs and you haven't
- 43:13Speaker 4: really seen much of anything of him, and some of
- 43:15Speaker 4: the other guys have had slow starts, but have come
- 43:17Speaker 4: on a little bit here as we've you know, gotten
- 43:19Speaker 4: on Kendrick Bourne, not necessarily with the ones he caught
- 43:21Speaker 4: a bunch of balls.
- 43:22Speaker 1: Today, Talod Hunter, Henry's looking Hunter.
- 43:25Speaker 4: Henry's been their their their best player in camp, and
- 43:27Speaker 4: he looks like he's in great shape. So I'm a
- 43:30Speaker 4: little bit concerned, especially with how Gazicki kind of dropped
- 43:33Speaker 4: off last year. It seemed like in the spring that
- 43:35Speaker 4: had such high hopes for those two guys, but I
- 43:37Speaker 4: think we all kind of realized that neither one of
- 43:40Speaker 4: them is a prototypical blocker type.
- 43:41Speaker 3: Both of them are probably ideally suited as all you know.
- 43:46Speaker 5: But so that's why his playing time is going to
- 43:49Speaker 5: be I think a little bit less than I initially thought,
- 43:52Speaker 5: because it kind of reminds me of Kendrick Bourne. Like
- 43:55Speaker 5: we get all these questions all the time. I know
- 43:57Speaker 5: Kendrick Bourne had a lot of stuff going on, locker room,
- 44:00Speaker 5: you know type stuff last year that that played a
- 44:03Speaker 5: part in it. But since they got Kendrick Bourne, he's
- 44:06Speaker 5: been a passing down receiver. I think he's played eight
- 44:10Speaker 5: run snaps his entire Patriots career. In two years, he's
- 44:14Speaker 5: played eight snaps where they run the football, and a
- 44:17Speaker 5: couple of those have been him running the football on
- 44:19Speaker 5: jet sweeps. Yeah, so he doesn't point, he doesn't play
- 44:22Speaker 5: in the run game, and I think is Sicky's gonna
- 44:25Speaker 5: be the exact same thing where it's gonna be two minute,
- 44:28Speaker 5: third down red zone and it's gonna be probably forty
- 44:33Speaker 5: percent ish of the snaps and people are gonna be like,
- 44:36Speaker 5: where is Mike Asiki? But he might flash and show
- 44:39Speaker 5: up in some situational type of things.
- 44:42Speaker 4: I just feel like that with Bourne, it's like he's
- 44:43Speaker 4: always been the fourth receiver. So it's like you're not
- 44:46Speaker 4: usually running when you got your fourth receiver, Like you're
- 44:48Speaker 4: in a situation where you might you probably have a
- 44:50Speaker 4: bunch of receivers on the field to try to you know,
- 44:52Speaker 4: he's never been the one or two guy, and.
- 44:53Speaker 3: But Devan's point, would he be more than that if
- 44:56Speaker 3: he could be? No, but like he might have the
- 45:01Speaker 3: receiving ability to be a two. But because he can't
- 45:04Speaker 3: be out there to do all the things that Evan's
- 45:06Speaker 3: talking about, he has to be the four. But what
- 45:08Speaker 3: can he do? Like, what are you look I receiver?
- 45:11Speaker 3: You don't think he's a good receiver. Well, I'm saying,
- 45:13Speaker 3: why can't he play in the run game? I clearly
- 45:16Speaker 3: you have to do everything for that.
- 45:17Speaker 5: Clearly he can't block because they I only have eight
- 45:22Speaker 5: snaps to go off of, So I can't tell you
- 45:23Speaker 5: if he actually can block or not. But they whatever
- 45:26Speaker 5: they see and practice out of him, clearly they don't
- 45:29Speaker 5: like his his blocking. And now they have, you know,
- 45:32Speaker 5: just to go with the receivers. They have Parker and
- 45:34Speaker 5: they have Juju who that they clearly trust on on
- 45:36Speaker 5: first and second one and right, those guys are gonna
- 45:39Speaker 5: play all three downs, and so Boring again is going
- 45:42Speaker 5: to be a best the third receiver, which when you're
- 45:45Speaker 5: an eleven personnel most of the time that's a passing situation.
- 45:48Speaker 5: And that's how we get here. And then we get
- 45:50Speaker 5: the question six months from now of why has don't
- 45:52Speaker 5: they play Kendrick Borne Moore? And I think the sicky
- 45:55Speaker 5: as the second tight end is going to be similar
- 45:57Speaker 5: where it's gonna probably be a lot of Hunter Henry
- 46:00Speaker 5: as it should, and then Kasiki's really only going to
- 46:04Speaker 5: be a passing down player. I don't think we're about
- 46:07Speaker 5: to go see twenty eleven Reducks where both of those
- 46:10Speaker 5: guys are playing on all three downs. It just doesn't
- 46:12Speaker 5: seem that way.
- 46:13Speaker 4: I think the question will be how many snaps the
- 46:15Speaker 4: Kasiki and Bourne play together this year?
- 46:17Speaker 3: Might it might be zero? Yeah? All right, I think
- 46:21Speaker 3: that would be disappointing to a lot of people. I
- 46:23Speaker 3: understand what point is, Yeah, I.
- 46:25Speaker 4: Do too, But I just I mean, I don't know
- 46:27Speaker 4: why we still talk about Kendrick Bourne all that much.
- 46:29Speaker 3: Like, I mean, he's you know, he's a fourth receiver.
- 46:32Speaker 3: We're about and Henry playing together.
- 46:34Speaker 1: Well, I guess you're putting into Taekwan at three.
- 46:39Speaker 3: Tomo Douglas work around.
- 46:42Speaker 1: You're saying Bourne is the fourth who's the third receiver
- 46:44Speaker 1: on this team?
- 46:45Speaker 5: Tomoro Douglas? Really, I think so?
- 46:49Speaker 3: Okay, Yeah, I would put porn ahead.
- 46:51Speaker 5: I think I think boring right now is ahead. And
- 46:54Speaker 5: in terms of just experience. But if you're trying to
- 46:58Speaker 5: put together the most complimentary group of receivers, that's fair.
- 47:03Speaker 5: I feel like all three of those Parker, Juju and
- 47:06Speaker 5: Bourne on the field together is like just they're like
- 47:08Speaker 5: the Spider Man meme. Like they're all they're just looking
- 47:11Speaker 5: at each other the same like they all run the
- 47:14Speaker 5: same way. They they don't.
- 47:16Speaker 1: I think we made a little news here, though. Paul
- 47:17Speaker 1: Peril says that the Mario Douglas is the third best
- 47:20Speaker 1: receiver in this team.
- 47:21Speaker 5: That I didn't say it was the third best receiver
- 47:26Speaker 5: on the team. I think he's the best guy.
- 47:29Speaker 3: For the role, right, Yeah, and again Evan Lazarre said that,
- 47:33Speaker 3: just just to repeat, take my name out of your mouth.
- 47:35Speaker 5: Correct, he's the best slot receiver on the team.
- 47:38Speaker 1: I think we think that, or I think that Edelman's
- 47:40Speaker 1: here because they asked him to take a look at
- 47:43Speaker 1: this Pop Douglas guy and tell us what you think.
- 47:45Speaker 3: So I have what I responded with this, Bill Beltick
- 47:47Speaker 3: strike you as the type of guy that would ask
- 47:49Speaker 3: a former player what he thought of an evaluation.
- 47:53Speaker 4: Edelmand was still out there when I was out there
- 47:55Speaker 4: shooting the video. He was holding court taking pictures that.
- 47:59Speaker 1: Little media.
- 48:00Speaker 3: But I think if anything, he came here to to
- 48:02Speaker 3: say hello to to all his old friends that are here.
- 48:04Speaker 5: Well, I don't know if he's asking him to evaluate
- 48:08Speaker 5: Pop Douglas, but if he's asking him to mentor Pop
- 48:12Speaker 5: Douglas watch some film with Pop Douglas, like, I'm all
- 48:15Speaker 5: for that. And I would also call Deon Branch and
- 48:17Speaker 5: see if he'll come back and talk to Pop Douglas. Also,
- 48:20Speaker 5: because if you're talking about stylistically, I think that he
- 48:23Speaker 5: reminds me a little bit more of Deon Branch than
- 48:25Speaker 5: Julian Edelman.
- 48:26Speaker 4: He's just so involved, and I mean, I you know,
- 48:28Speaker 4: I hesitate to pump him as like, oh, this is it.
- 48:31Speaker 3: He's on the team, he's got a roll on offense.
- 48:34Speaker 4: But I just I don't think you can ignore how
- 48:36Speaker 4: much he's in motion, how much they're kind of you know,
- 48:38Speaker 4: playing with him on the inside, and they don't really
- 48:41Speaker 4: do that with anybody else. And certainly when they do
- 48:44Speaker 4: the guys that they send on the fly sweeps and
- 48:46Speaker 4: jets and stuff, like, they're not fast, you know, so
- 48:48Speaker 4: it just it stands out when they do that stuff
- 48:49Speaker 4: with him, because it's like here comes this little water
- 48:51Speaker 4: bug running across the field.
- 48:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree that he like the slot stuff. I
- 48:55Speaker 3: don't think they have anybody like that, old school kind
- 48:58Speaker 3: of shifty slot guy. He's the only one really that
- 49:02Speaker 3: fits that mold.
- 49:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I just know how Bill O'Brien loves to highlight quickness,
- 49:07Speaker 5: and especially out of the slot obviously, And like Paul
- 49:11Speaker 5: just said, who else is really gonna be that jitterbug
- 49:14Speaker 5: on the inside that can do that? And they're gonna
- 49:17Speaker 5: they'll go empty and they'll clear it out for him,
- 49:19Speaker 5: and he's just gonna be one on one with a
- 49:21Speaker 5: linebacker or safety and he's You have to be able
- 49:24Speaker 5: to exploit.
- 49:24Speaker 1: That, you know, because no matter what defense you're playing,
- 49:29Speaker 1: not every one of their defenders is going to be fast.
- 49:32Speaker 1: So you have to be able to exploit when you
- 49:34Speaker 1: get that matchup. And you know it, Parker's not gonna
- 49:39Speaker 1: do that.
- 49:40Speaker 3: See, but you is not. But that's but that's the
- 49:42Speaker 3: drawback of it. So if you're right, then make sure,
- 49:45Speaker 3: if you're a defender, you put one of the fast
- 49:47Speaker 3: guys on him because the other guys aren't fast. But
- 49:49Speaker 3: you don't have to have fast guys on it. Now,
- 49:51Speaker 3: I think Bourne is. I think Bourne runs much differently
- 49:54Speaker 3: than Smith, Schuster and especially Park.
- 49:57Speaker 1: He does.
- 49:58Speaker 3: Now there's something going on with and I've always been
- 50:01Speaker 3: critical of him because he doesn't always seem to beware
- 50:03Speaker 3: in doing what he's supposed to do. I think there's
- 50:06Speaker 3: a reason he doesn't play more than he does, beyond
- 50:08Speaker 3: like the physical, beyond blocking, Beyond this. I think I've seen,
- 50:13Speaker 3: like the last two days he's left excellent at camp. Yeah,
- 50:16Speaker 3: but I don't know if they feel like he's a
- 50:19Speaker 3: reliable guy that seems to be just from afar. Bill
- 50:23Speaker 3: Belgick certainly doesn't tell me any of this, but it
- 50:26Speaker 3: looks to me like they don't think he's overly reliable.
- 50:29Speaker 3: What have you guys thought?
- 50:30Speaker 4: A Juju Like I have to admit I'm not better
- 50:32Speaker 4: the last couple of days, but not over the movie.
- 50:34Speaker 4: I'm not overly I haven't really been blown away by him.
- 50:37Speaker 4: Like I think he's been productive the last couple of days.
- 50:38Speaker 4: He's made some catches, but I was hoping that wow
- 50:42Speaker 4: a little bit after the catch juice and then this
- 50:44Speaker 4: is extremely limited sample size right now, but you know,
- 50:48Speaker 4: just generally watching him, I think he's a break tackle
- 50:51Speaker 4: after the catch guy, not a you know what I mean, Yeah,
- 50:55Speaker 4: which is fine if he does. It's how you gets.
- 50:59Speaker 4: You have to catch as long as you get it.
- 51:00Speaker 4: Like a lot of the place we talk about when
- 51:01Speaker 4: he's on like a little crosser in the red zone
- 51:03Speaker 4: and you know, and then he gets contacted like the
- 51:05Speaker 4: four and you're like, you're hoping that he's going to
- 51:08Speaker 4: break those but I don't know.
- 51:10Speaker 3: He just he does like big.
- 51:11Speaker 4: He is big, but he just he fits that mold
- 51:14Speaker 4: like Evan, you know, not I mean, he's different than Parker,
- 51:16Speaker 4: but none of those guys on the hoof are are
- 51:18Speaker 4: like whoa you know.
- 51:19Speaker 3: And again that feels like a little bit with Douglas.
- 51:22Speaker 4: Why he pops so much is because he's just got
- 51:24Speaker 4: that slippery athleticism that the guys don't really have.
- 51:27Speaker 5: He moves differently in the rest of I'm not as
- 51:30Speaker 5: I don't know, I'm not as low on juju. I
- 51:32Speaker 5: guess because.
- 51:34Speaker 3: With that, I think the last couple of days I've
- 51:36Speaker 3: seen some of this. He's not a guy.
- 51:39Speaker 5: And this is, you know, why we talk so much
- 51:40Speaker 5: about DeAndre Hopkins and all these others. He's not going
- 51:43Speaker 5: to get open on his own. He's not like this
- 51:45Speaker 5: route runner that's just going to go out there and
- 51:47Speaker 5: and flash in the sense of that that pop Douglas
- 51:50Speaker 5: has with just like the quick twitch and explosiveness. But
- 51:53Speaker 5: when you get him into those pockets of space and
- 51:56Speaker 5: you get him over the middle of the field and
- 51:59Speaker 5: on those slants and things like that, he's gonna be
- 52:01Speaker 5: able to catch it and run and that's what they're
- 52:04Speaker 5: hoping to to He'll be able to do. So I'm
- 52:06Speaker 5: waiting to see live tackling, like in game situations. Is
- 52:11Speaker 5: he is he running away from guys? Is he breaking
- 52:13Speaker 5: tackles after the catch? It's kind of hard to evaluate
- 52:16Speaker 5: that in this type of setting.
- 52:20Speaker 1: All Right, eight five five Pats five hundred is the
- 52:22Speaker 1: ace ticket hout line, web radio at Patriots dot com
- 52:25Speaker 1: is the email address. Let's open the phones up. We'll
- 52:29Speaker 1: go to Patty and agawam, what's up Patty, what's up everyone? Hey?
- 52:33Speaker 7: Good thing that you guys are talking about for him?
- 52:35Speaker 7: Because I watched a lot of the videos from Patriots
- 52:39Speaker 7: dot com, but I was I thought it was very
- 52:42Speaker 7: interesting the dot The Oly interviewed with phill Belichick. He
- 52:46Speaker 7: asked them what players so far this training camp has
- 52:50Speaker 7: impressed him and he's you know, just to paraphrase, he's
- 52:53Speaker 7: like obviously a lot of the second third year guys
- 52:56Speaker 7: he's like and even some of the guys that have
- 52:57Speaker 7: been that you know that.
- 52:58Speaker 6: Have been.
- 53:00Speaker 7: More veteran guys than He brought up Bentley, he brought
- 53:03Speaker 7: up uh to Girl Peppers, Hunter Henry, and he brought
- 53:06Speaker 7: up Kendrick Bourne.
- 53:07Speaker 1: And I just is that when he was talking to Poli.
- 53:10Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I think this show some point were you
- 53:14Speaker 7: guys have said, you know, Matt Patricia obviously didn't like him,
- 53:19Speaker 7: but I think Bill likes him. And I just I
- 53:21Speaker 7: kind of wanted to get your guys opinion.
- 53:22Speaker 3: On on Yeah, I would say that last year that
- 53:26Speaker 3: no one likes Kenrick, Like if Bill Belichick wanted to like,
- 53:30Speaker 3: if Kendrick Bourne, if Bill Belichick wanted Kendrick Borne to
- 53:32Speaker 3: play last year, he would have played. Like I'm tired
- 53:34Speaker 3: of blaming the Kennedy assassination on Matt Patricians, Like, I
- 53:39Speaker 3: get it, they got he got in the doghouse and
- 53:41Speaker 3: maybe he got in Patricia's doghouse and that's how it started.
- 53:44Speaker 3: If Bill Belichick, with that offense for seventeen games, thought
- 53:48Speaker 3: that Kendrick Bourne was the answer to help fix it.
- 53:51Speaker 3: He would have been playing right. And I heard the
- 53:54Speaker 3: same stuff Patty. I heard Bourne talk about his relationship
- 53:57Speaker 3: with Bill. He he he went to Great Lents and
- 54:00Speaker 3: saying he's the kind of guy that I know, even
- 54:02Speaker 3: after my career is over, I'm still going to be
- 54:04Speaker 3: in contact with Bill Bellich. Like I think there is
- 54:07Speaker 3: a sort of rapport, great good word, you know, between
- 54:12Speaker 3: the two. I don't think it's a personal kind of thing. Yeah,
- 54:15Speaker 3: you know what I mean. I think there are things
- 54:18Speaker 3: that Bourne doesn't do on the field, like probably mentally,
- 54:24Speaker 3: you know, for Belichick to to say I can rely
- 54:27Speaker 3: on this guy as a you know, a ninety plus
- 54:29Speaker 3: percent playtime guy. The ship is saled, right, Like I
- 54:32Speaker 3: think what it is?
- 54:33Speaker 4: I think so, you know, we keep trying to talk
- 54:35Speaker 4: about him as if he's going to have a breakout
- 54:37Speaker 4: year here and year whatever it is for him, but had.
- 54:40Speaker 3: Nice day forms. I think he's a good complimentary receiver.
- 54:43Speaker 3: I think any team would be fine with him as
- 54:46Speaker 3: a complimentary piece if you're asking him to be one
- 54:48Speaker 3: of your best guys. I don't think he's consistently yeah.
- 54:52Speaker 5: Like if you I just you can go back to
- 54:55Speaker 5: twenty one where it's not about Matt Patricia and he's
- 54:58Speaker 5: still a part time player, still a rotational guy. I
- 55:01Speaker 5: know he played a lot more down the stretch in
- 55:03Speaker 5: twenty one once he got hot, but like, but he
- 55:06Speaker 5: was still a fifty percent snap guy in twenty one
- 55:08Speaker 5: and they still didn't play him in the run game
- 55:10Speaker 5: with McDaniels either. And I think Paul's points perfect. Like
- 55:13Speaker 5: if they still had Gronke and Edelman and he's like
- 55:15Speaker 5: the third guy, like he's the Chris Hogan of that group,
- 55:18Speaker 5: then he would be really good at that.
- 55:20Speaker 1: But I like him.
- 55:21Speaker 3: I mean he's a hard guy not to like.
- 55:23Speaker 4: He just doesn't come with a cloak of invisibility, like correct, right, Sometimes.
- 55:27Speaker 3: He doesn't help him just during games. He didn't get that.
- 55:30Speaker 3: We just put in a game. Yeah right, Yeah, they
- 55:33Speaker 3: did the big catch and run against Tennessee. It's like,
- 55:35Speaker 3: look like no one, no one knew where he was
- 55:37Speaker 3: when there was like a bubble boy he had it
- 55:39Speaker 3: on the first week of training camp.
- 55:41Speaker 1: That was where it was Dominique in New York. What's up?
- 55:43Speaker 1: Oh no, he isn't.
- 55:45Speaker 3: He's off the line.
- 55:46Speaker 1: Let's go to Delaware. Gabriel's there. Hey Gabriel.
- 55:53Speaker 7: My questions to y'all would be, when we go to
- 55:55Speaker 7: that Week one game, who do you guys think is
- 55:58Speaker 7: going to be the starting O line?
- 56:00Speaker 3: Oh god, it's a great question.
- 56:01Speaker 1: Okay question Andrews and Neil for sure.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Yeah, we're gonna bring Stephen Neil out of retirement.
- 56:06Speaker 1: Absolutely not Neil. Why Cole Strange, I don't know why
- 56:10Speaker 1: Stephen Neil?
- 56:11Speaker 4: Uh?
- 56:12Speaker 1: And I think Trent Brown will be out there.
- 56:14Speaker 3: I mean, I think if everybody's hell, I don't know
- 56:16Speaker 3: about on one you we haven't seen. Say, it's easy
- 56:18Speaker 3: to say who the starting line is going to be.
- 56:20Speaker 3: If everybody's healthy, Well, well, I.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Think those three will be there. Now. On the other side,
- 56:24Speaker 1: I'm not sure right now.
- 56:26Speaker 3: I say so confident in in in Cole Strange and
- 56:30Speaker 3: Trent Brown.
- 56:30Speaker 4: Because they will be I'm telling you, I think those
- 56:34Speaker 4: two guys are I think it's gonna I think it's
- 56:35Speaker 4: gonna be Mafi right guard. I don't think we're gonna
- 56:38Speaker 4: see it. When you I think when you might just
- 56:40Speaker 4: be p up and into the season.
- 56:41Speaker 1: You see that, I'm not. I'm not. I don't know
- 56:43Speaker 1: about them. And when you so that's up for grabs,
- 56:46Speaker 1: and right now you'd have to say McDermott Evans is
- 56:49Speaker 1: your right tackle.
- 56:49Speaker 5: Right yeah, I'm about ready to call it for Connor
- 56:52Speaker 5: McDermott at this point, I would probably go Trent left,
- 56:56Speaker 5: Strange Andrews. I think Big Mike will be fine. Connor McDermot.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Now, why do you say you think Micha will be fine?
- 57:03Speaker 3: Like ready to go Week one finals?
- 57:05Speaker 1: We haven't even seen.
- 57:06Speaker 3: I have more confidence in Big Mic than I do
- 57:08Speaker 3: Strange and Brown because Strange and Brown are out there
- 57:11Speaker 3: not doing anything I know out there. But I know
- 57:14Speaker 3: why not? Is my point.
- 57:17Speaker 5: I think this is a different for whatever reason. I
- 57:21Speaker 5: I don't necessarily know why, but I think this is
- 57:26Speaker 5: a little bit of some you know, we talk a
- 57:28Speaker 5: lot about Bill evolving with the times and today is
- 57:32Speaker 5: athlete and that sort of thing, and I think some
- 57:35Speaker 5: of these things that we're seeing with guys like Judon
- 57:37Speaker 5: and Trent Brown and it's a little bit of evolving.
- 57:41Speaker 5: I think that they know that those guys are veteran guys,
- 57:44Speaker 5: they played a lot of football for this team. They
- 57:46Speaker 5: have some younger guys at those spots that they probably
- 57:48Speaker 5: want to take a look at. In training camp. Anyways,
- 57:51Speaker 5: I guess you could throw a remandre into this category
- 57:53Speaker 5: two And do you really need Trent Brown out there?
- 57:59Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 57:59Speaker 1: I know, I know that we get on Trent Brown for, like,
- 58:02Speaker 1: you know, being out, But I think he earned some
- 58:05Speaker 1: credits last year for playing under the weather and sick.
- 58:10Speaker 1: And remember those games where he wouldn't even come out
- 58:12Speaker 1: for warm ups, but he'd come out for the game
- 58:14Speaker 1: because he just wasn't right. But he played, and that's
- 58:17Speaker 1: more than he did in the past.
- 58:19Speaker 3: But it's just a lot with him. There's always something
- 58:22Speaker 3: he just like, like I just look at it totally differently,
- 58:25Speaker 3: Like you're tying like these roster game roster bonuses to
- 58:28Speaker 3: him and he's going out there doing the bare minimum,
- 58:31Speaker 3: like because he wanted to get paid. Like I just don't.
- 58:34Speaker 3: I don't have any faith in the guy. I think
- 58:37Speaker 3: he can play when he decides he's engaged and wants
- 58:39Speaker 3: to play, so he basically has the ability to play.
- 58:42Speaker 1: You think he didn't go out for warm ups last
- 58:45Speaker 1: year because he was I.
- 58:46Speaker 3: Think he did exactly, just like why did you report
- 58:49Speaker 3: early because I was told to? I think that's the
- 58:52Speaker 3: epitome of Trent Brown. The exact minimum I have to
- 58:56Speaker 3: do to get by. That's what he does. I think
- 58:58Speaker 3: if he wanted it, he could be a Pro Bowl
- 59:02Speaker 3: caliber player if he wanted. Instead, he made the Pro
- 59:05Speaker 3: Bowl once when with the Raiders. He probably was in
- 59:08Speaker 3: a contract year. I'd have to look, but he probably
- 59:10Speaker 3: had something that he was fighting for with the Raiders.
- 59:13Speaker 5: I don't disagree with you overall on Trent Brown, but
- 59:16Speaker 5: they have no choice none. He's by far their best
- 59:19Speaker 5: tackle and it's not even close. So whether he's bought in,
- 59:24Speaker 5: whether he's been spending too much time at the buffet table,
- 59:26Speaker 5: so he needs to condition some more, whatever the case
- 59:29Speaker 5: may be. Although Belichick said that he came in underweight,
- 59:32Speaker 5: that he came in lighter than he has the last
- 59:34Speaker 5: couple of years, so that makes you believe that he's
- 59:37Speaker 5: in good shape. But regardless, they need him. They have
- 59:41Speaker 5: no other choice.
- 59:42Speaker 3: So the thing with Brown is like you just never
- 59:46Speaker 3: like that the reliability. And what worries me the most
- 59:50Speaker 3: is someone asked me who do you think has more leverage?
- 59:56Speaker 3: Brown or Judon, you know, if they're holding in so
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: to speak, right, And I said Brown, Brown by far,
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: And the reason is, like, we're just sitting around the
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: know what all ten right? And Andy Hart says I'd
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: cut him, like if if Bill Belichick and I and
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: Andy said Brown?
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: Oh?
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: Andy, Andy said, you know, I still believe in the
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: Belichick mantra that he has always said, like, you know,
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: sometimes the more talented guy isn't what's best for the team,
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: and in this case that that might be. You might
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: be better off with a lesser player doing what you
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: want him to do and what you need him to do,
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: even though physically he's not as good. And you can
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: make an argument for that. But when he said I
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: would cut Trent Brown, Phil Perry from NBC Sports Boston's
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: head turned around so fast and like his whole face
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: was like white, Like what are you talking about? You
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: can't do that, And both of them are right, you
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: can't cut him because what are you gonna do? And
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: I get it. It's like, you know, you want to
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: be that high school coach you treats them all the same.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: You know it doesn't work like that. You can't afford it.
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: Like Evan's been telling you every day about Conor McDermott
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: and Riley Reef at the tackles, I would shudder to
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: think what would happen if if that was the situation
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: for seventeen games. I don't think they can afford it.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: And that's when he's the most dangerous, when you need
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: them the most, when you need him the most, and
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: when he has the level and yeah, when he has
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: the leverage, he you know, I just would worry about it.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: I mean, it's always fair point with him, right.
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: I think we need a car to come in here
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: and light a fire under him or something.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: Saying that into like the next century guy. He just
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: can't retire.
- 1:01:41Speaker 5: I've come around on some of the I think the
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: receivers last couple of days have made me feel a
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: little bit better about their their supporting cast and that
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: respect hisuse. Guys are starting to get open and they
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: are starting to make some plays down the field. The
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: way that they treated the tackle position this offseason is
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: is just practice.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: Well, you just hope that that isn't what derails the
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: whole thing.
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: I mean, that's my concern.
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: You like everything that they're doing, you know, with all
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: the window dressing, the motion, all the stuff that Bill
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: O'Brien's put in. You love it, but we all know
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: that if your offensive line stinks. It's gonna blow it
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: up right in your face. It's not even gonna matter
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: how good of coordinator you have. If Matt has one
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: and a half seconds, he's on his back.
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: I mean, they just they had the free agent tackles.
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: This was a good free agent tackle class. There was
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: multiple guys that that got good contracts and can play
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: start starting tackles, that can play in the league. And
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: we were talking about this up top deuce, like, how
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: much better would you feel if the only question mark
- 1:02:36Speaker 5: really was Trent Brown's want to and and and buy
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: in Because the other spot, Mike Baglinchy is here and
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: is You're not worried about.
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: That at all. Made the comment to Matt Smith about
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: the Atlanta guy McGary McGarry, mc gary. You know the
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: other day when we were talking about it, this did okay.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: You didn't want to take one of the tackles. Maybe
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: you didn't love the tackles in the draft. You had
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: an opportunity. Instead of five million, you spend ten million
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: or something. You know, you spend five million on Riley Reef.
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: Spend ten million, you know, maybe you know whatever, a
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: little bit more to get one of those guys that
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: I think would have been more of a short thing.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: Yeah. Is Tyren Smith still with Dallas or is a
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: free agent?
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: No, he's still with Dallas.
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: Okay, Yeah, although Michael Parsons threw him about a mile
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: on Yeah.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: The guy to keep an eye on, veteran wise is
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: in Cincinnati Williams. Yeah, they have a little bit of
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: a you know, they have some depth on the offensive line,
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: and I think they're looking to turn it over a
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: little bit and he seems to be unhappy.
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: Yeah, he hasn't played very well last couple of years.
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: The injuries have really piled up on him. But he
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: was one of the better players in his draft coming out,
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: and I think somebody that at this point I would
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: say that Jonah Williams is worth a trade.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: Fire Dominique from New York is back on the line.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: What's up, Dominique?
- 1:03:52Speaker 6: Hey?
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: Yeah, sure, Ken.
- 1:03:56Speaker 8: Awesome, very thank you for testing on it earlier. Thinking
- 1:04:00Speaker 8: up the defense, I know we've been talking about the
- 1:04:01Speaker 8: offense a lot, but looking at some of the rookies
- 1:04:04Speaker 8: and how they played, Kem White was one guy that
- 1:04:06Speaker 8: I wanted to ask about. I didn't hear much about,
- 1:04:08Speaker 8: but I think forget who touched upon it earlier, so
- 1:04:11Speaker 8: I mean you shared thoughts on that. But but going
- 1:04:14Speaker 8: back to sort of be the top performers. Thinking about
- 1:04:17Speaker 8: Christian Gonzales, it's interesting because you know, I think it
- 1:04:20Speaker 8: was earlier mentioned that he was really doing very well initially,
- 1:04:23Speaker 8: especially around you know, Mini Camp Kenny Ram. He's made
- 1:04:26Speaker 8: some plays and struggled a little bit or at least
- 1:04:29Speaker 8: in the pastor has given a big place. I mean,
- 1:04:31Speaker 8: one thing that I love is with Bill O'Brien in
- 1:04:34Speaker 8: the complexity of his offense or the motions that he's
- 1:04:36Speaker 8: going to be able to throw, hopefully helped the young
- 1:04:38Speaker 8: guy like him learn to kind of read things a
- 1:04:40Speaker 8: little bit ahead of time, understand what you know, defenses
- 1:04:42Speaker 8: might do. Hopefully gives him an edge, and you know,
- 1:04:45Speaker 8: we get a sort of Sauce Gardner type, you know,
- 1:04:48Speaker 8: rookie season from him. That's my hope. But but beyond that,
- 1:04:52Speaker 8: I wanted to ask outside of Matt Dudo on this,
- 1:04:54Speaker 8: anyone flash as a potential game breaker for you, whether
- 1:04:57Speaker 8: it's strugg or whether it's Gonzales. You know, want that
- 1:05:00Speaker 8: he's been solid through the middle. And lastly, just a
- 1:05:03Speaker 8: note on the offense. Love the fact that I'm hearing
- 1:05:05Speaker 8: about the intensity.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:05:07Speaker 8: I know, our identity and disciplined for the most part,
- 1:05:10Speaker 8: but I kind of want them fire from the team.
- 1:05:11Speaker 8: You know, we're not going to be great. I think
- 1:05:13Speaker 8: I can be realistic and admit that they have the
- 1:05:15Speaker 8: potential to be good, I think, but what takes us
- 1:05:18Speaker 8: over the edge? And if you combine that you know,
- 1:05:20Speaker 8: disciplined Belichick team with a little bit of intensity, scrappiness,
- 1:05:24Speaker 8: more personality, even even you know, as far as that
- 1:05:27Speaker 8: will go, I would be you know, more interested and
- 1:05:30Speaker 8: it will make the team more enjoyable to watch. Also,
- 1:05:33Speaker 8: one last question during training camp, do they ever sort
- 1:05:36Speaker 8: of do situations with mobile quarterbacks. I don't know if
- 1:05:38Speaker 8: that's just the game plan week to week that they
- 1:05:40Speaker 8: do with specific.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: Teams, just knowing that you know they do, but not
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: when we're there.
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: Yeah, they did that a lot more in the spring.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, and they and they will you know when
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: they certainly week one, they'll have a package ready for
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: you know, hurts, you know, to defend him. But we
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: won't see those practices.
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I wish that they were doing a little bit,
- 1:06:03Speaker 5: but they continue to do that as I did in
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: the spring because that regardless of who's that quarterback, that's
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: you're gonna face RPO. You're gonna face all that kind
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: of stuff every single week. Now, every team has that
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: in their in their playbook, and the Patriots have had
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: trouble with it, like you're gonna face Hurts in week
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: one who can run? And then you're gonna face Miami
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: in week two? Or run ourpo up your butt all
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: the time. So it's like you got to practice against it.
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: I wish they were doing that a little bit more.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: Thanks Dominique.
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: There were a lot of questions.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: The other question is, you know, other than Gonzalez who
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: we talked about, who was flashed on defense, who could
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: be a real game wrecker for another team.
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: They I don't know about game wrecker. That's that's hard
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: to say. I mean, I think Mapu's been around a lot.
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: I mean, I think the safeties have all been really involved.
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: I'm not sure if they're trying to figure out what's
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: best or if they're going to continue just to kind
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: of roll through those safeties. I mean, I've been impressed
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: with Gonzales, I just I don't know if he's ever
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: going to be that sauce Gardner presence.
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: That's so physical.
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: But I think even a lot of the catches that
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: Gonzalez has given up, he's been right there and has
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: been competitive, and you know some guys have come down
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: with some great catches on him too.
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: If I was the Patriots, if I was Bill Belichick,
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: I would call Kyle Duggart into my office, say call
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: your agent, and I would put a contract on the
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: table for Kyle Duggar right now, because he's gonna have
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: a huge year.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: He's gonna have a huge year, and he's got a
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: lot of tread left on his tires. And speaking of tires,

- 1:08:07Speaker 1: Let's go places. All right, we're back here on Patriots
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: Unfiltered eight five five past five hundred is the ACE
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: ticket hotline. Web radio at Patriots dot com is the
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: email address. I just want to read this one email
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: that came in yesterday. So he's talking mostly about Tuesday's show,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: and I hope things are better for him now. But
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: this is Mike and Nova Scotia. He says, I love
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: the show listen for years. I've got great respect for
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: the PU crew. I have a couple of bones to
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: pick with the recent coverage of training camp. While Fred
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: and Tamara tried to inject some positivity into yesterday's show
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: with the three Amigos Mike, Paul, and Evan, they weren't
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: having it. The negativity, especially from Deuce, is getting out
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: of hand and yesterday went too far. After standing on
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: his soapbox for weeks about getting d Hop, he was
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: so down on the team yesterday that he said it
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: wasn't he wasn't sure if it would make it. Difference
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: of d Hop was here. I'm not sure what he
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: expects from the offense six days into camp while installing
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: the third system in three years with one padded practice. Evan,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: I love your passion and often agree with your opinions,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: but you would do well to remember one of Fred's
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: favorite sayings, we don't know what they know. I would
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: point to the draft where both you and dus who
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: put considerable effort into your boards, and yet when Mapu
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: was picked, you and Deuce were at a bit of
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: a loss as to the particulars of the player, the
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: same player who, by most indications, has turned heads at camp. Paul,
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: I love the snark which has been missing somewhat lately,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: and at the risk of being on the receiving end
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: of it, Come on, man, talking about the reps of
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: the third string quarterback a week into camp and how
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: it was odd compared to the Brady years. It's like
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: you want a QB controversy. Maybe unlike some of the
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: PU panel. The Patriots haven't decided on the roster and
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: actually want to look at the players they have in camp.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: What a concept. I enjoy the camp coverage, but yesterday
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: it means Tuesday I found myself wishing Eric was back,
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: and that's not a compliment. I don't expect coverage that
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: just paints a rosy picture. But I don't expect all
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: doom and gloom either. While we all have our opinions
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: on the draft, that shouldn't cloud our judgment of the
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: players here on the draft, I agree with Paul and
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: others that it takes a few years to see what
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: you really have. The last couple of drafts appear to
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: have been pretty good. In this year's class certainly has
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: potential with your top draft picks play meaningful When when
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: your top draft picks play meaningful snaps in their rookie year,
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: I think it bodes well for the future. Cold strange included,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: when we get to joint practices in preseason games, we
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: will have a better idea of where things stand. Until then,
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: Can we dial back on the negativity until it's at
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: least warranted?
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: Well, there you go, I thought, I ag read that
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: good thorough email. I'm gonna give him what he wants.
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: I'm gonna give him a little start, right he asked
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: me for He said he was disappointed that I haven't
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: given much snark at the risk of being on the
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: receiving end. I'm going to put him on the receiving
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: end of it. So when the rookies weren't playing from
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: day one and they were winning titles, that was a
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: bad thing. But now that rookies are stepping in right now,
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: that bodes well. Okay, that's snark, that's snark. I would
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: just say, like I said, I thought it was a
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: very good email. I thought he was very fair and balanced.
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: Obviously he is a passionate fan. He looks at things
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: a little bit more optimistically than most others who have
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: been watching. But I would just say keep your advice.
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: You know, you should heed your own advice. You're making
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: sure that Evan Mike, in myself, you know, we're cognizant
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: of the fact that we don't know what they know
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: when we're criticizing. But it's okay, I guess to praise
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: when we don't know what they know. What was that right,
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: Cause he's like he's all over you know, like mop
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: who he was.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: Really he was mad at you, very negative.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: He was mad at you and Evan. He was looking
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: for some snark from me. Really, the most people want
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: less snark from apologized for missing an email. Was there
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: something so negative? Ever since they didn't signed Hopkins, you've
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: been down in the dumps, gloomy gusts. Not even sure
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: if that would have made any difference. No, it was,
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: like I said, it was a very fair and balanced email,
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: even though it was critical of us. I welcome that
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: that kind of feedback. Well, honestly, did you bring me anything?
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: Sorry, I brought you some corn bread or some chicken
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: thighs for it.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: That looks like, yeah, okay, that's good. I'll pick on that.
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: I know, I know picked on the elevators here on me.
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: Okay, Well, I feel more positive about the team last
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: couple of days. So I mean, I guess you know
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: that that's gotta be worth something to him.
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: My guess is you had a good show today.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: Terrence from Colt's territory wants to know when we're in
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: Frankfurt this year, if there will be a place for
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: fans to congregate there will be so ready to announce
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: that yet, but we'll have a pub that'll be for
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: the fans that week, so definitely a place for Patriots
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: fans to congregate. Plus we'll have some other place too
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: that will be really cool, so it'll it'll be a
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: great week in Frankfurt. He also says, I hope I
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: don't see myself as a I hope I don't, but
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: I see myself as a realist. And not having a
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: legit number one receiver is concerning with his quarterback. I
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: believe Belichick still treats his offense as that Brady's still
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: elevating everyone, even average players. Mac hasn't shown the capability
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: of doing that, so he needed a number one receiving thread.
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: I refuse to be like some of these Patriots fans
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: who act as if nothing's wrong. I hope to see
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: you guys.
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: That certainly stands a stock contractail exactly.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: Yeah, what was it?
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: Nothing's wrong? Email? Though, I mean, I just I don't.
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: I don't. I don't believe it. I can't believe somebody
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: has watched the last year. Wait till something happens before
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: you get negative.
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: Okay, Well, things are happening at training camp, like we
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: spent all that time to convince me.
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: Okay, well I'm sorry. Now I'm getting a little hot.
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: I'm getting a little hot. You can get hot, go ahead.
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: That'd be good for me to be able to write.
- 1:14:09Speaker 6: Well.
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: I just you know, do you want reasonable announces? Do
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: you want us to talk about what we're seeing that
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: we get frustrated? We want them to do well. I
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: want to come out here and see them tossing the
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: ball around the field like they've kind of been doing
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: the last couple of days.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: We ow, we owe it to the listeners to tell
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: it like we see it. So, I mean, I if
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: Douce thinks things aren't, you know, looking right, he has
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: an obligation to say that. Just like today where things
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: look better for the offense, he's saying that they look better.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: And so you're going to get this. You're going to
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: get straight schooled. This is a gender free radio. We
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: don't have agendas here, you know.
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: No, I mean, and I might.
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I love watching the game, and I
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: love watching it well executed and well played. And you know,
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: I certainly the last couple of years of average football
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: and poor decisions have colored a little bit of what
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: I bring into this season. Now, that said, I'm feeling
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: pretty optimistic right now. I think that they've got a
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: number of players on defense who are working in the
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: rookies certainly are working in and showing promise on both
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: sides of the ball, and the offense is starting to
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: cook a little bit. And I think that that's, you know,
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: something that you can't just I still really believe that,
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: you know, you can have an offense that plays above
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: the sum of their parts. You can't just look at
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: their talent level and say that's what they are, that's
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: what they're going to play do. I still think that
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: if they play together and they're all on the same page,
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: then it can look pretty good. Last year, they weren't
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: all on the same page, and they also weren't very talented,
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: so it looked disastrous.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: I remember Duce has a high bar. He's the one
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: who said he was tired of twelve and fourty.
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: I've seen at least thirteen or fourteen wins before I
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: get excited.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: Yeah, Tim's in the UK on the ACE ticket hot line.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: What's up, Tim?
- 1:15:45Speaker 10: Can you hear me?
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: Yes? Weekend?
- 1:15:48Speaker 10: Excellent, long long time, first time, thanks for all the content.
- 1:15:52Speaker 10: Absolutely love it here in the UK.
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: Thanks for calling.
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:15:57Speaker 10: So I got a lot on my mind, does, as
- 1:16:00Speaker 10: all of Paths Nation does. I've got a take on
- 1:16:05Speaker 10: Max that I'd like to share and a question uh
- 1:16:09Speaker 10: questioned about it as well.
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: Okay, Las fire one ready.
- 1:16:17Speaker 10: So I obviously want Mac to succeed this year. I
- 1:16:22Speaker 10: really hope he is good enough that he retains some
- 1:16:27Speaker 10: market value and we can trade him, because I don't
- 1:16:30Speaker 10: think Mac Jones is going to win a super Bowl
- 1:16:33Speaker 10: in the NFL, either with the Paths or with any
- 1:16:36Speaker 10: other team. And I think the sooner we move on,
- 1:16:39Speaker 10: the better, and if we can, you know, trade Mac,
- 1:16:43Speaker 10: get some draft capital, hopefully you know, hit the draft
- 1:16:47Speaker 10: with a you know another take another shot a quarterback,
- 1:16:50Speaker 10: and and and move on because I don't see it
- 1:16:54Speaker 10: going where we all want it to go with Mac Jones.
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: Well, I mean, you are you willing to give him
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: this year? You think?
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: Are you?
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: Are you ready to move on right now?
- 1:17:05Speaker 10: I'll give him this year And just kind of leaves
- 1:17:07Speaker 10: onto the question that I had in mind for you.
- 1:17:10Speaker 10: How bad does Mac Jones need to be this year
- 1:17:13Speaker 10: for you to want to trade him? How good do
- 1:17:16Speaker 10: they have to be this year for you to want
- 1:17:19Speaker 10: to give him the fifth year extension. Whatever metric you want.
- 1:17:24Speaker 10: It can be numbers that, it can be the eyeball test. Yeah,
- 1:17:28Speaker 10: how how good or bad do they have to be
- 1:17:30Speaker 10: to move the needle one way or the other.
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: Well, for bad, I'd say he's got to get pull
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: for zappy. I think if he gets pull for zappy,
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: then it's kind of over.
- 1:17:37Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know what you know. You read
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: like a specific like it's almost a foregone conclusion unless
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: it just bottoms out.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: I agree with your mind. It's just hard.
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: I mean, I you know what he's speaking to. It's
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: it's almost harder to be in the middle and you know,
- 1:17:52Speaker 4: not quite know than it is to be terrible and
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: to be like we know, we don't go. But you know,
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: from what we've seen from Mac the last couple of days,
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: I mean, I think he's been playing well and and
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: I think he's in a third year situation where based
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: on last year, he deserves a full chance. And with
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: what they're doing with Bill O'Brien and how he's working
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: things in together, how it's starting to come together, how
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: you see you know, progression, like it's okay to have
- 1:18:15Speaker 4: a little bit of optimism about maybe what what Mac
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: has right now and what what he'll be able to
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: do within this offense.
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: He's gonna I said it so many times, like he's
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: up against it.
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: He's got I mean, such a tough division, such a
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: tough conference, such a tough schedule.
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: It's a high, high.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Bar for him. I'm not ready to move on. And
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: but if he doesn't play well, yeah, we're gonna be starting.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: We're gonna start thinking about who's the next guy. I
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: don't know about trading him, you know, he says, you know,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: trade for draft capital.
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: I mean, if he's at that point, what do you
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: get for him?
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: You know, Yeah, so you're not gonna get, you know,
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: a haul for Mac Jones. If you trade him, you
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: don't have to extend him right away, only in his
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: third year, so you could you could play him in
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: his fourth year. I just want to know who's the
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: next guy. And I think they're going to be competitive
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: this year, so it's not like they're going to have
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: a top five pick. You know, you're in a tough place.
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: You are in the place where a lot of NFL
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: teams have been. It's it's NFL purgatory. You're not bad
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: enough to get that top pick, and you're not good
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: enough to win a Super Bowl and you don't have
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: the franchise quarterback, and so you're kind of stuck and
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: you kind of have to hope for luck. And you know,
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: maybe you know, you sign that that bridge quarterback, and
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: you know, for now, you just got to hope that
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: Mac can develop this year. That's that's that's what you
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: have to hope for.
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: I mean, I was always going to say, in a
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: perfect world, you could have just really bottom it out
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: in twenty twenty, and you know, they still were able
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: to almost have a five hundred season with Cam Newton.
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: But in hindsight, you know, like like at the time.
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: You're like, oh, we could have had Zach Wilson, we
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: could have had Trey Lance, and now it's like, well,
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: you weren't getting Trevor Lawrence. I mean, I guess we
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: could talk about justin fields how you feel about that situation.
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: But you know, even that, it's it's a tough thing, like, oh, hey,
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: we got a top five pick. You still want to
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: swung and missed even maybe even worse than you did
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: with Mac at fifteen. So there's just no easy solution
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: it's not like our just cast Mac off will get
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: the next guy, Like, there's no assurance that you're gonna
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: get somebody that's even as good as Mac is.
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you know, the Lions made the trade
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: with the Rams, right, Yeah, and they got Jared Goff,
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: and that might be the type of quarterback that you
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: might end up if Mac doesn't work out in order,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: you know, because you're not gonna get that blue chip
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: quarterback coming out of the draft probably unless you tank.
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: And I don't want to tank. I don't want to
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: do that, you know. And I don't think the team
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: can ever be that bad to do it without tanking,
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: you know. So you're in a tough position.
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: So I think now that's the most Boston comment ever.
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: They could never lose enough games unless they were trying
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: to lose.
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: I don't think with Belichick as the coach, they could
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: be a two.
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: I would largely agree with you. I just was kind
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: of funny the way you said it.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: It's not a Bosston not here, it's a Belichick watch. Yeah,
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: it's a Belichick thing. Plus, I don't want to have
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: that team that the culture is losing, you know.
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: I know, Yeah, I don't think that's the culture is
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: losing if you do that. I don't think those guys
- 1:21:19Speaker 3: are around when you when you rebuild.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: But but it's you're in a tough spot. You're in
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: a tough spot. So obviously your first hope is is
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: Mac is the guy. And I think we owe it
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: to him to give him this season just to see that.
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: I'm not ready to sound like Tim was ready right now,
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: but you asked him and he said, well, yeah, he'll
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: give him this season. But I think, you know, Mac
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: has to play really well for Tim to stick with him.
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: I mean the question, I'm sure that that you know
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: some fans are probably asking, and I am. It's like,
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: what what's worse? Like would you rather go seven and
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: ten again, eight and nine again, or would you rather
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: just three wins and just bottom out and then you know,
- 1:21:59Speaker 4: and then have to redo it? Like if you just
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: keep it staying in the middle, you're always it's hard
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: to break that cycle unless the run, I know, but
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: like Rookie's got to break out. I mean, the young
- 1:22:10Speaker 4: guy's got to break out this year. That's what That's
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: how you get out of this cycle of middling teams
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: with you know, you have a very good head coach
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: who's going to get the team ready to play. And
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: now you have a competent offensive system, So I mean
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: the pieces are in place. It's really I think just
- 1:22:22Speaker 4: comes down to you know what Paul talks about talent.
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: You know, you got these talented guys have to emerge,
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: have to get a chance, have to play, you know,
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: And so in that regard, you're excited about guys like Douglas,
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: you know, and maybe you're I'm a little bit disappointed
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: right now in Taekwon Thornton just it's been you know,
- 1:22:37Speaker 4: we talked about him as being the wild card. They
- 1:22:40Speaker 4: kind of flopped Juju for Jacoby kind of a wash.
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: It certainly even now seems more of a wash. I mean,
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: I guess we'll see. I feel like Juju's got still
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: got big shoes to live up to with Jacoby. But
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: you haven't gotten anything out of Thornton yet. And that's
- 1:22:54Speaker 4: you know, he was the X factor for that group
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: that could really maybe change the dynamic. And now you're
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: hoping it's Douglas.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: You know, you mentioned what you're either go three and
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: fourteen or just be middling. And you know, I think
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: about the story in Miami where the owner and you
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: know this, I don't know if this is true, but
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: this was the report that the owner told Flores the
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: tank and he said he'd actually pay him like extra
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: money for every loss. And and you know, you think, oh,
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: you know, head coach, thinking about the future of the team,
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: maybe he'd buy into that. And Flora said, no way,
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: I'm not going to do that.
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: Integrity.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not going to do that. Now. I don't
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: know if that, but that's the report. I don't know,
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: but I could see. You know, Belichick isn't going to
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: tank ever, no ever, But.
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: You just I really wonder how it's all going to
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: come together this season, just with how tough their schedule is,
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: and you know, and it's a real opportunity for them
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: to maybe turn the page and actually, you know, start
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: knocking off some of these good teams.
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: I mean, just right out of the gate. Like I mean,
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: you know, I don't, I don't. I never try to
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: make too much out of Week one.
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: I think, win or lose, it's often a weird game,
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: and it's often not indicative of what kind of team
- 1:24:01Speaker 4: you are. It's just kind of that day. Yeah, But
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: I still think if you were to somehow pull out
- 1:24:06Speaker 4: a win over the darlings of the league in Philadelphia,
- 1:24:09Speaker 4: and there'd be a little bit of swag and you'd
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: certainly need it going into that Week two game, which
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: I think is even more meaningful against Miami, which is
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: a game that you know, really you want to be
- 1:24:17Speaker 4: a second, you want to have a ceiling at least
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: of the second overall finish in AFCs.
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: I think you got to win that game.
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: Christians in La. What's up Christian.
- 1:24:27Speaker 11: Here you guys to all you today?
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: Good?
- 1:24:30Speaker 11: Good, Hey, so one, I'm going to start backwards and
- 1:24:34Speaker 11: go for it really really quick. I think Week one
- 1:24:37Speaker 11: really does say a lot. I think it's indicative of
- 1:24:39Speaker 11: how the team takes to the coaching and the preparation
- 1:24:44Speaker 11: that's needed. Like last year, we saw in Week one
- 1:24:48Speaker 11: that the team just looked dishoveled, They look confused, and
- 1:24:52Speaker 11: they never really recovered. So I think Week one is
- 1:24:55Speaker 11: a real good indicator of how the team is taking
- 1:24:58Speaker 11: to the new coaching too. With the mac Jones, I think, really,
- 1:25:01Speaker 11: to be honest, we need to give him two full
- 1:25:04Speaker 11: seasons in one offensive system to really see if.
- 1:25:07Speaker 6: He is the guy.
- 1:25:08Speaker 11: He's not gotten that consistently, and so with any of
- 1:25:11Speaker 11: the quarterbacks that you guys have seen be really successful,
- 1:25:15Speaker 11: even the ones that have come in and had a
- 1:25:16Speaker 11: lot of doubt around him, like a Josh Allen, it
- 1:25:18Speaker 11: took two seasons in one system to really bloss them.
- 1:25:22Speaker 11: So until we give Mac that, it's like, you know,
- 1:25:25Speaker 11: we're doing the same thing that the Cleveland Browns do
- 1:25:27Speaker 11: and all these other middling teams where they just they
- 1:25:29Speaker 11: cast off everything too soon before they before they really
- 1:25:34Speaker 11: find out what's going.
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: On, because the fans, well, I would just be curious.
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: I would be curious, which which are those teams? Do
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: you think? Did that? Give me an example of a
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: team you think they cast the Buffalo Bills they cast
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: off their quarterback too soon?
- 1:25:45Speaker 10: Oh no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: Give me an example of a team you think they
- 1:25:48Speaker 3: cast off their quarterback too soon?
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:25:50Speaker 3: I think maybe.
- 1:25:51Speaker 11: I think maybe the Cleveland Browns. I think Paker Mayfield
- 1:25:54Speaker 11: can play football.
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: He can't.
- 1:25:55Speaker 11: Maybe he's not the best locker room die or the
- 1:25:57Speaker 11: best kind.
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: Of football teah. I think he's I think he's had
- 1:26:00Speaker 3: opportunities around the league and he looks the same as
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: he did in Cleveland, Like I don't think Cleveland waited
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: too long to pull the plug on him. I think
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: I think he's near.
- 1:26:10Speaker 11: They nearly beat the Chiefs with Baker Mayfield.
- 1:26:13Speaker 3: So yeah, that doesn't mean that Cleveland's not a good team.
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: I didn't say that. I think Cleveland's a talented team
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: that needs a quarterback, and they had a.
- 1:26:20Speaker 11: Quarterback that was that was in their system, would in
- 1:26:24Speaker 11: the system.
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: He did remain in the system the next year, and
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: what happened they didn't do that well but that But
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: but why didn't they do that well? I think when
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: you just because he was terrible. He was one of
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: the worst quarterbacks in football in that year that was
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: twenty one, I think the year the Patriots made the playoffs,
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: right that the year that Mac made the playoffs was
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: twenty one, right, Yeah, he was terrible that season. I
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: mean it was one of the worst performances I've seen live.
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: I'll tell you that he was awful in the game
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: against the Patriots. I concur on that, Like, I don't
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: think that Cleveland waited, you know, you know, pull the
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: plug too quick. I think when you know, like I think,
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: the worst thing that you can do is embrace mediocrity.
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: See absolute thing. Like to me, it's like Andy Dalton,
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: I'm going to ride it out for six, seven, eight years,
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: and all of a sudden, now I'm looking for a
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: new coach, a new direction, a new quarterback. And I
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: knew he wasn't the guy in year three, but I
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: stuck with him through year six. I think that's the
- 1:27:23Speaker 3: worst thing you can do. And I think that maybe
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: the Giants might be in that boat right now with Jones.
- 1:27:28Speaker 11: Sure, okay, so you say you say that Mac does not.
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: Oh, I didn't say any. I'm not talking about Mac Jones.
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: I'm pushing back on we don't want to be like
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: these other teams that pull the plug too soon. I
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: don't think there are a lot of examples of teams
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: that pull the plug too soon. I think there are
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: far more examples of teams that wait too long with
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: mediocre to below average quarterbacks than there are really good
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: quarterbacks that teams didn't give enough of a leash.
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: Right And it's also guys like Josh Allen who are
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: insanely physically talented.
- 1:27:58Speaker 3: But Shathen was really good in year two right like
- 1:28:00Speaker 3: then he got digs and he got to another stratosphere.
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: Like but you knew what he had the next Christians,
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: what he had to do to reach that next level.
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: Like mac he is what you know, he kind of
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: is the high floor guy. So there's not like if
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: he can just learn to throw accurately, and he can
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: throw accurately, like I don't think.
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: That there's anything you can just learn the you know,
- 1:28:16Speaker 3: the defenses. He knows the defense if he can just
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: learn And this is, by the way, like I want
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: to push back a little bit on something else, the
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: whole third offense in three years, that's not really true.
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: That's not really true. Now, Bill O'Brien is different than
- 1:28:29Speaker 3: Josh McDaniels. I'm not saying it's exactly the same, but
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: the core principles of their offense are pretty much the same.
- 1:28:37Speaker 3: And I don't think last year was just a complete
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: departure from what they were doing schematically. It was a
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: complete departure with a guy not having any idea how
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: to sequence and call plays in game plan and do
- 1:28:49Speaker 3: all that stuff. Like I think he was not done
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: any favors by Matt Patricia last year, But do you like,
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: I don't look at this as like a whole new
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: cast of characters with Bill O'Brien and Josh McDaniels. Did
- 1:29:01Speaker 3: anybody say that with with Brady? No, it was the
- 1:29:03Speaker 3: same thing, right Bill, it was Bill Belich. It was
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: the offense that Ron Earhart made who knows how long ago,
- 1:29:09Speaker 3: and they've used it really ever since. I'm sure there's
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: some nuance to the absolutely differences with Bill O'Brien and
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: Josh mc should.
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: Lose your job if you don't change your terminology.
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: You can't compare him, though to guys who have had
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: three different head coaches, and you know that's like you know, mean,
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: look at Trevor Lawrence. I mean that's a complete change
- 1:29:28Speaker 4: in everything. The head coach has gone a whole new offense,
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: all new weapons. I mean, that's a big change. I
- 1:29:33Speaker 4: think there has been some continuity with Mac I that
- 1:29:36Speaker 4: all said. I just think the position he was put in,
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: we're all on the same page.
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: He needs, he needs a chance, he deserves a chance,
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: and I think he absolutely deserves a chance. I don't think,
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: like I said, I think he's going to get the
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: fifty year option unless he really, like let's like you said,
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: unless he loses the job. If he loses the job
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: to ZAPPI then he's probably not going to get it,
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: but I think he's going to get more than enough
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: opportunities to play. If he goes three years and you
- 1:30:01Speaker 3: don't know yet and the team gives him a fourth,
- 1:30:05Speaker 3: that's more in that we're embracing mediocrity than.
- 1:30:08Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a quarterback on a manageable contract than anything else.
- 1:30:11Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, we don't. We didn't have a better option.
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: Todd's in North Carolina.
- 1:30:16Speaker 12: Heye, Todd, Hey guys, I just got a quick take
- 1:30:22Speaker 12: on kind of your idea that we'd beat Philly. So
- 1:30:24Speaker 12: I kind of want to know which two rookie or
- 1:30:28Speaker 12: second year players would you see and it would have
- 1:30:30Speaker 12: to stand.
- 1:30:31Speaker 8: Out for us to be Philly.
- 1:30:32Speaker 12: For me, it'd be maybe Maphu and whoever's playing tackle
- 1:30:35Speaker 12: opposite our big guy, because I you know, we need
- 1:30:39Speaker 12: a line and we need to stop the speedy. So
- 1:30:41Speaker 12: it'd be interested to hear which two you guys would think.
- 1:30:43Speaker 12: I think that's for sure.
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: I mean, I I mean, I like seeing Mapu play
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: a bunch. I still not convinced he's got a role
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: on defense week one, much less this year. I mean,
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: I'm excited to see where he ends up, but I'm
- 1:30:55Speaker 4: not convinced that he's, you know, really a factor.
- 1:30:58Speaker 3: I mean, I I would put some of the lighter
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: linebackers in there, though.
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: I think Mac Wilson's probably in that mix a little
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: bit more than map Who Is Mobile guy struggled last
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: year against Lamar.
- 1:31:09Speaker 3: He'd be the first one.
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: I mean, it's easy to say the tackles, they're gonna
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: they gotta get tackle play, they got to get good.
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: Play up front.
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: That's a beast of an offensive line. They've got a
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: number of talented players, and I think that's where that
- 1:31:20Speaker 4: game is mostly gonna be won or lost.
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: And I know why Todd picked map Who because of
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: Jalen Hurts and yeah, you know he would you know,
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: I just think that's asking a lot of a young
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: guy to go out there in your first game and
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: have to deal with something so sort of outside the box.
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: I just think he's he's I mean, I'm not sure
- 1:31:38Speaker 3: exactly what map Who is yet, No neither am I.
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: And that's I mean, people are kind of making fun
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: of me and Evan for our reactions online, but.
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: That was part of the email.
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: Part of the man was yeah they said that, and
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: I and I and I stand by what I said
- 1:31:49Speaker 4: at the time. I said, if this all works out perfectly,
- 1:31:52Speaker 4: what is he?
- 1:31:53Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:31:53Speaker 4: I still don't know yet. I mean, we've seen him
- 1:31:55Speaker 4: play a little safety, We've seen him play a little linebacker.
- 1:31:58Speaker 4: He looks like he's pretty comfortab out there so far,
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: but I still don't know exactly how he beats out
- 1:32:04Speaker 4: Kyle Duggar, Adrian Phillips, you know, all those guys, Jibil Peppers,
- 1:32:08Speaker 4: all those guys are ahead of him, Jalen Mills. I mean,
- 1:32:10Speaker 4: he's he's buried right now on the depth chart. I
- 1:32:12Speaker 4: know we all want that mobile, you know, second level guy,
- 1:32:15Speaker 4: but we'll have to see.
- 1:32:17Speaker 3: I'm still waiting to see on him.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: And I love the player.
- 1:32:19Speaker 3: I love the idea of the player.
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: I think that's what a lot of people are more
- 1:32:22Speaker 4: in love with than actual Marte mop Who is just
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: the idea of what Marte mop Who could be. But
- 1:32:28Speaker 4: as as the emailer said, I'm waiting to see it
- 1:32:30Speaker 4: on the field first, and so far it's just been
- 1:32:32Speaker 4: he's playing in a number of spots on the on
- 1:32:34Speaker 4: the lower level of reps.
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: Let's go to Willem and Phillim. What's up, William.
- 1:32:41Speaker 8: Thanks for it.
- 1:32:41Speaker 3: How you doing all right?
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: All right?
- 1:32:45Speaker 8: Questions for Goose and Paul? First of all, how y'all
- 1:32:49Speaker 8: doing to good?
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: What good? How you doing all right?
- 1:32:53Speaker 7: All right?
- 1:32:54Speaker 6: So I got it.
- 1:32:56Speaker 8: I gotta ask this one. Okay, what is going on
- 1:33:00Speaker 8: with my board? Tae Kwon Thorton? I mean, here we
- 1:33:03Speaker 8: got George Picking making one hand catches over. They handed
- 1:33:07Speaker 8: him the ball and we got to receive hit that
- 1:33:09Speaker 8: has four two eight speed and hasn't shown really anything.
- 1:33:13Speaker 8: I mean, do we consider this as another bus will
- 1:33:16Speaker 8: build again?
- 1:33:17Speaker 6: Uh?
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: The only I mean that, Yeah, it's a little early.
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: I I just don't know.
- 1:33:21Speaker 4: He might have some kind of physical issue. Maybe he's
- 1:33:24Speaker 4: like got a tweeked hamstring or something. Anyway, I tell anything,
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: I tell you right now, it's not going to be positive.
- 1:33:28Speaker 4: But he's you know, he's just not really He's doing
- 1:33:31Speaker 4: the warm up drills and then he goes down to
- 1:33:32Speaker 4: the lower field. Now, most of those guys either you know,
- 1:33:35Speaker 4: we're speculating there's no depth behind them and they're needed,
- 1:33:37Speaker 4: or they have contract concerns. That's Taekwon's not a contract
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: concerned guy.
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: So it's a no. It's a disappointing start. I haven't.
- 1:33:44Speaker 4: I haven't ruled them out yet, and I think, really
- 1:33:46Speaker 4: where all of our information, the majority of the good
- 1:33:48Speaker 4: information is going to come from joint practices, So you know,
- 1:33:51Speaker 4: it's it's you don't need.
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: To jump off the ledge just yet about anything.
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: But you know, once we get out there is on
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: when you available, does he come back as strange back?
- 1:33:58Speaker 4: You know, that's when the rubber meets the road and
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: those things start to come together. So but no question,
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: it's been disappointing other than a couple passes he caught
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: from Zappy Me a few days ago.
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: His superpower is a speed and we just haven't seen it.
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: Haven't seen that. It hasn't been on this stand and
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: the way that Douglass jumps off the field. And maybe
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: that's more because it's a quickness thing.
- 1:34:16Speaker 4: But you know, Taekwon is just such a tall, skinny dude.
- 1:34:18Speaker 4: He's so he's so unique, but you haven't really seen
- 1:34:22Speaker 4: that put to use yet. You haven't really seen him
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: running by people or taking the top off the defense.
- 1:34:27Speaker 4: Half the time you see him catch stuff. I mean,
- 1:34:29Speaker 4: we've been in the red zone, but it's underneath stuff,
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: and I you know, I just i'd love to see
- 1:34:32Speaker 4: him take a shot at him downfield.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: Yep, thanks, William, appreciate the call. Let's go to Brent
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: and Reno.
- 1:34:37Speaker 13: Hey Brent, Hey, guys, just got a quick, quick, little
- 1:34:43Speaker 13: you know topic, going to discuss really fast. I haven't
- 1:34:46Speaker 13: been a frequent color since COVID because I was on telework,
- 1:34:49Speaker 13: but now I'm back on it, so I'm gonna start
- 1:34:50Speaker 13: call him more. But I just wanted to kind of
- 1:34:52Speaker 13: hear about how Jalen Mills is doing and what you
- 1:34:55Speaker 13: guys are seeing from him in training camp now that
- 1:34:58Speaker 13: we moved in back to the safety spot.
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a little up and down, Yeah, but he's
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: uh I think definitely safety. Yeah. Yeah, I hit a
- 1:35:05Speaker 3: nice pass defense a couple of days ago with the
- 1:35:09Speaker 3: with the safety group. With thee I finished practice with
- 1:35:11Speaker 3: a nice pick on an out route. Yeah, so uh yeah.
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: I think he's been covering tight ends a lot.
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: So he's not with the cornerbacks anymore. He's pretty much
- 1:35:19Speaker 4: looks like he's with the safety group full time. And
- 1:35:21Speaker 4: I mean, I do wonder how does it how does
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: it all you know, mix up? I mean, maybe he
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: kind of not to say he's taking Devin mccordy's free
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: safety kind of role, but I think he kind of
- 1:35:30Speaker 4: takes that maybe that roster spot as the rotational you know,
- 1:35:34Speaker 4: for safety. But otherwise between Peppers and Phillips and Dougart,
- 1:35:37Speaker 4: they're just rotating those guys all through every safety spot
- 1:35:40Speaker 4: you can imagine, and on any down you never really
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: do know who's going where.
- 1:35:44Speaker 13: Yeah, yeah, perfect, And thanks for hitting thats because that's
- 1:35:49Speaker 13: exactly what I was going to ask us. How you
- 1:35:50Speaker 13: feel about him going from a cody there?
- 1:35:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I I mean, I gotta be honest,
- 1:35:55Speaker 4: I have some concerns just about the deep speed and
- 1:35:57Speaker 4: the range of those guys on the back end. You know,
- 1:35:59Speaker 4: if some of these teams that are bombs away, you know,
- 1:36:02Speaker 4: are Peppers and Phillips and doug are gonna have that
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: range to get sidelined to side on and really make
- 1:36:07Speaker 4: sure that that the big plays aren't becoming a big problem.
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: That's a that's a concern of mine on the defensive
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: of how they're gonna how they're gonna handle some of
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: that stuff with the faster teams.
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: Cordy had that speed.
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: Smart on the same page. It's like what you know,
- 1:36:22Speaker 3: and it's always dangerous to sort of like watch from
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: afar and then try to interpret what's going on. But
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: there was a play in the red zone that Juju
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: caught that that little stutter step where he kind of
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: went to the outside and did the slant like a
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: little skinny post. Yeah, before that play, we talked a
- 1:36:38Speaker 3: lot about this during the podcast. It definitely looked like
- 1:36:41Speaker 3: Jalen Mills was trying to get some communication to Jonathan Jones.
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: They weren't on the same page and the guy ends
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: up being wide open. So I'm not telling you that
- 1:36:49Speaker 3: that wouldn't happened. If Devin mccorty was still there, maybe
- 1:36:52Speaker 3: the same thing would have happened. But just some of
- 1:36:54Speaker 3: those communication things that you want to watch and see
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: if they're coverage breakdowns more often than they have.
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: If we get to one and there's like a sixty
- 1:37:01Speaker 4: yard AJ Brown touchdown and you know, Peppers and Tugger
- 1:37:04Speaker 4: and Phillos are all look at each other with palms.
- 1:37:06Speaker 3: In the air, then you'll know they miss Devin mccordy.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: Johnny right, Sin don't listen to the critics, he says.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and everyone sees
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: things differently. I've seen every reaction on the spectrum to
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: the practice, from doom and gloom to when do the
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: playoffs start? I'll be at the joint practices in Green
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: Bay for at least a day, and I'm excited to
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: see our offense, in particular how it looks against another
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: team's defense, especially one as stout as Green Bay's. I
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: think you are all cautiously optimistic to maybe at times
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: safely neutral, but I hardly think you are all intentionally
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: negative snarky.
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: Maybe I'm very negative, but I am not intentionally negative.
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: Rat's Evan on the Engagement. That's that's Paul shows that
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: are intentionally negative.
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: But they're intentionally snarky to on steroids.
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, all right, yeah, Rick and Louisville. After listening
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: to that old cl it on the commercial break, you
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: can give me Hannity and Combs the Crossfire on CNN.
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: I'll take Fred versus Paul any day of the week,
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: and twice on Sunday. You guys are classic. Please never change.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: I'm still laughing as I type.
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: I try not to do that, I really do. I
- 1:38:15Speaker 3: don't know how. Every once in a while Fred just
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: does it because he gives Deduce. That little look gives
- 1:38:20Speaker 3: Deuce the glint in his eye, and he he knows
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: he's got me. He knows he's got me. He doesn't
- 1:38:25Speaker 3: have Eric anymore, though.
- 1:38:25Speaker 4: I used to like when the Eric ones would start,
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: and you know, you could tell Fred like all of
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: a sudden found a little bit. He found a little
- 1:38:31Speaker 4: vain that he wants to maybe tap into a little bit,
- 1:38:33Speaker 4: and Eric's going crazy.
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: It was kind of bullying, though, don't you Well, that's
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: what makes good radio. Yeah, I guess. But he's just
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: such an easy target, you know.
- 1:38:42Speaker 4: Well, that's what makes him good, right, That's what makes
- 1:38:44Speaker 4: it a good I mean, it's uh, I mean, I
- 1:38:45Speaker 4: feel like the radio shows, it's like everybody's kind of
- 1:38:48Speaker 4: becomes characters someone and that's what makes it good.
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: Right right, yep, let's see, George says, and he's from Virginia.
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: Happy to hear you all talk about how the offense
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: is looking good. I'd been hearing and reading reports of
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: the offense looking good from other outlets, and I've been
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: dismissing it since I didn't hear it from my PU sources.
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: Thank you for the work you guys do. So there
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: you go. See that's what we've earned. We've earned the credibility.
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: When we say it's good, it's good, you can believe it.
- 1:39:20Speaker 4: That's why I mean it's funny because you know, the
- 1:39:22Speaker 4: last few practices, me and Evan watched up top, Paul's
- 1:39:24Speaker 4: been down below with the know it alls, and you know,
- 1:39:26Speaker 4: we still come together afterwards in the same thing. We
- 1:39:28Speaker 4: don't even talk and we just got which is like
- 1:39:31Speaker 4: another reason, not that I intentionally don't want to watch
- 1:39:33Speaker 4: it with you or anybody else to watch it, but
- 1:39:36Speaker 4: that that's why I never go on Twitter after practice.
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: I never want to see what other people's thoughts. I
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: don't want to be clouded by someone. I want to
- 1:39:46Speaker 3: see what I see. And if I go back and
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: I and there's a couple of guys that I'll look at.
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: I always look at Mike's notebook when he throws his
- 1:39:55Speaker 3: notebook out there on Twitter. And then every once in
- 1:39:57Speaker 3: a while be like, ah, I didn't I didn't catch that,
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: or I meant to include that. But usually you know,
- 1:40:04Speaker 3: Phil Perry, Mike Reese, you know, the three of us,
- 1:40:08Speaker 3: we're all almost all all on the same Mike Giardi,
- 1:40:11Speaker 3: we're all on the same page. We all kind of watch.
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: And we've been around for a little bit. We've seen
- 1:40:16Speaker 3: the same things over and over again, and there's very
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: few surprises.
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: I have high hopes for Chris Price. Yeah, taking back
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: on the glow beat. I think he's gonna make an
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: extra effort to be accurate and fair.
- 1:40:27Speaker 3: He's right in there, right in there, anymore than the
- 1:40:30Speaker 3: guy he's replacing. Like that kind as well. He should
- 1:40:34Speaker 3: have been on Patriots dot com staff, but I think
- 1:40:37Speaker 3: he should be. Well, he was one of us.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: Dan and Virginia and Michigan. Congrats to Evan on his engagement.
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: How does his fiance feel about Evan's computer being his
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: best man so that he can keep watching film during
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: the ceremony?
- 1:40:49Speaker 3: Oh, it's fun. It's fun. I mean I haven't set
- 1:40:52Speaker 3: a date right, no, but you know, I mean we're
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: already talking.
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: We were talking a little about about babies, and I
- 1:40:57Speaker 4: was like, cheez, Evan, how are you going to manage
- 1:40:58Speaker 4: that one? So we're like, all right, if you could
- 1:41:00Speaker 4: get it, so she has it like right after the draft,
- 1:41:03Speaker 4: you know, then you'll get some some free time maybe
- 1:41:05Speaker 4: to have the baby.
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: But I heard they weren't going to have the baby.
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: The traditional way he was going to draft one's baby.
- 1:41:12Speaker 3: He's gonna scout it and draw it up. No, it's fun.
- 1:41:15Speaker 4: It's fun listening to Evan, you know, with his passion
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: for the game and then his poor girlfriend and trying
- 1:41:19Speaker 4: to balance it all.
- 1:41:20Speaker 3: It's a high comedy for sure.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: Yeah, Damario Douglas, this is still Dan has been getting
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: some attention and he wants to know is there any
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: chance that he ends up like the next Taylor Price
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: or Zach Zudfeld.
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, there is sure, Yeah, Douglas. You know, but
- 1:41:38Speaker 4: but right now it looks like it doesn't look like it.
- 1:41:40Speaker 3: I think he has a trait that like he's quick,
- 1:41:45Speaker 3: and I think that that kind of stands out and
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: he catches the ball. Yeah, I mean I've really noticed
- 1:41:51Speaker 3: a lot of like super catches, not super buddy. A
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: couple had one today, but I mean nice down for
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: But what I'm saying is every pass that he caught
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: I would expect you or I to catch so far. Whereas,
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: like reminder, Stevenson made a catch today in a short,
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: little hook that was high. He went up and high
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: pointed it. That's not an average catch for a running back,
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: like you know, you know, what I'm saying, like I'm
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: not telling you like it was just behind the back,
- 1:42:20Speaker 3: one handed catch. But every ball that to Mario Douglas
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: has caught has been absolutely routine. Yeah, so I don't
- 1:42:26Speaker 3: know about his hands yet.
- 1:42:27Speaker 4: I mean take it for what it is in one
- 1:42:28Speaker 4: on ones, but nobody gets the separation like he does.
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: And those are really tough drills. But you'd think the
- 1:42:34Speaker 3: one on ones, you'd think that.
- 1:42:35Speaker 4: Some of those guys though juju, they be able to
- 1:42:37Speaker 4: get better separation.
- 1:42:38Speaker 3: But I mean, he is like boom boom open Born
- 1:42:42Speaker 3: has been the best at that drill in the two days.
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: Bourne has been wide open every time every rep. And
- 1:42:48Speaker 3: your boy takes advantage of Marcus Jones a lot. Douglas
- 1:42:52Speaker 3: he catches Marcus Jones, he has He has gotten Marcus
- 1:42:55Speaker 3: Jones a few times.
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: Uh, Barton Poland you know, when it comes to a
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: potential veteran quarterback, he's very high in Kyler Murray. He
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: thinks that he could be a really good quarterback and
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: believes that he carried a horribly coach Cardinals team for
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: a while and that he's underrated.
- 1:43:16Speaker 4: Weird spot for him after tearing his ac on the
- 1:43:18Speaker 4: Patriots I mean, he's probably gonna be like a midseason right, Like,
- 1:43:21Speaker 4: they don't expect him to be ready.
- 1:43:23Speaker 3: To go, So he's in a weird spot. New coach.
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: I heard the Jonathan Gannon's been pretty hard disciplinarian from
- 1:43:30Speaker 4: the reports I've seen, so interesting spot for Kyler Murray
- 1:43:33Speaker 4: kind of coming in the middle of the year. How's
- 1:43:34Speaker 4: the team doing at that point? Does he bring a
- 1:43:36Speaker 4: spark to them? And you know, maybe he can secure
- 1:43:38Speaker 4: that job, But I don't. I don't disagree with the
- 1:43:40Speaker 4: point that he might be generally available in the next
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: season or.
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: So Ben writes in he's in Liverpool. I know it's
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: early in training camp, but I'm starting to get worried
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: about the offense, much like last year, will be the
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: downfall of this team, and I think a lot of
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: that has to do with Mac. I don't think he
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: was given a level playing ground to build upon his
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: year last year, but still sounds like he just isn't
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: getting going to be the quarterback we can invest in.
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: What would need to happen for you guys, this kind
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: of the same question as before. Well need to happen
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: to pull the plug on them?
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: I would just pump the brakes on the on the
- 1:44:14Speaker 3: killing Mac right now. Yeah, I'm not looking for that.
- 1:44:17Speaker 3: I'm going to go all fred on you here like this.
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: We're like, you know, a week into training camp, getting
- 1:44:22Speaker 3: ready to start a season. I'm not ready to say, like, well,
- 1:44:25Speaker 3: what if we have to make a change of quarterback
- 1:44:27Speaker 3: right now? Mac Jones is the quarterback, right I mean
- 1:44:30Speaker 3: right now?
- 1:44:31Speaker 4: Doubt Look as it looks as good as he's been
- 1:44:33Speaker 4: playing since the middle of his rookie season. I mean,
- 1:44:35Speaker 4: you know, like just as far as practice is what
- 1:44:37Speaker 4: we've seen, Like you know, so I don't know what
- 1:44:40Speaker 4: his ceiling's going to be, but he's playing good football
- 1:44:42Speaker 4: right now. When he's starting to feel it a little bit,
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: he's you know, celebrating and you know, the team seems
- 1:44:46Speaker 4: to be rallying around him. So I know it was
- 1:44:48Speaker 4: a slow start and we might have been negative about
- 1:44:50Speaker 4: the start, but it's starting to come on.
- 1:44:52Speaker 3: They strung a few days together. It wasn't like, oh,
- 1:44:55Speaker 3: two days ago we had a good day and it
- 1:44:56Speaker 3: was bad.
- 1:44:56Speaker 4: Like, you know, it's starting to stack a little bit.
- 1:44:59Speaker 4: So I would just you know, pump the brakes on,
- 1:45:01Speaker 4: you know, just trying to take Max's job. Immediately give
- 1:45:03Speaker 4: him a chance.
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: We got to get that line right, and that's the key.
- 1:45:06Speaker 3: That's that's I think that the bigger key to all
- 1:45:08Speaker 3: of it.
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: I really have confidence at this offense will at least
- 1:45:12Speaker 4: be confident like it was in twenty twenty one.
- 1:45:13Speaker 3: I think the pieces are at least equal, if not
- 1:45:15Speaker 3: better than they would do.
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: You and Evan will be out in Green Bay for
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: the first set of joint practices.
- 1:45:20Speaker 4: Yeah, it's going to be really important for you to
- 1:45:24Speaker 4: you know, I pay attention to it.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: Give us some accurate reports of what's going on.
- 1:45:27Speaker 4: Accurate this time, I was just gonna be eating cheese
- 1:45:29Speaker 4: the whole time. I could actually watch practice.
- 1:45:31Speaker 3: Now this is this is ridiculous.
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: No, we're looking forward to Reno writes in should we
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: be concerned how much I'm reading about Christian Gonzales getting beat?
- 1:45:41Speaker 3: No, I mean I think he's been competitive in all
- 1:45:45Speaker 3: the all the drills.
- 1:45:46Speaker 4: I think he's shown good just it just looks comfortable
- 1:45:48Speaker 4: out there, and there's so much communication and hand drills
- 1:45:51Speaker 4: and everything that goes back and forth pre snap with
- 1:45:53Speaker 4: those guys. He's going to get beat sometimes. I mean
- 1:45:56Speaker 4: everybody's going to get beat on a DeVante Parker. You know,
- 1:45:59Speaker 4: high point faith, that's what he does. But no, I
- 1:46:02Speaker 4: wouldn't get I wouldn't be overly concerned yet. I think
- 1:46:04Speaker 4: I'd just be excited. He's been playing a lot and
- 1:46:06Speaker 4: that he's taken he's taken some lumps. There's gonna be
- 1:46:08Speaker 4: growing pains, but I think so far he's been he's
- 1:46:11Speaker 4: been excellent.
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: Erica is from Virginia. What's up? Erica?
- 1:46:16Speaker 6: Hey, guys, how are y'all doing today?
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: Okay?
- 1:46:19Speaker 6: Erica, Hey, So I was talking to a buddy of mine,
- 1:46:23Speaker 6: and we've been discussing this whole first round pick back
- 1:46:27Speaker 6: in twenty twenty when we when we drafted Duggart. Now,
- 1:46:32Speaker 6: with that being said, knowing what we know now with
- 1:46:35Speaker 6: Burrow and Duggert, would y'all have made that option to
- 1:46:41Speaker 6: uh make a move to get Burrow over Dugger in
- 1:46:46Speaker 6: the twenty twenty draft.
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: Dougger was a second round pick. Decision was made, Dougger
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: was a second Dougger was a second round pick.
- 1:46:53Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, I think they would have had to sold
- 1:46:55Speaker 4: the farm, but hey, if there was a way to
- 1:46:57Speaker 4: do it. Yeah, I love me some Joe Burrow, but
- 1:47:00Speaker 4: I think it was probably a little bit out of
- 1:47:01Speaker 4: their their range to realistically make that happen.
- 1:47:05Speaker 6: But oh yeah, and that's what I thought too, Like,
- 1:47:08Speaker 6: I just didn't see the whole Burrow thing happening, and
- 1:47:11Speaker 6: my body was like, uh no, we could have traded Brady.
- 1:47:13Speaker 6: And I'm like, yeah, I still don't see them trading
- 1:47:15Speaker 6: Brady Cincinnati to get that pick Burrow.
- 1:47:19Speaker 4: Could you imagine that that would have been that would
- 1:47:21Speaker 4: have been chess checkers?
- 1:47:23Speaker 6: No, I mean sure, you don't think that Burrow would
- 1:47:26Speaker 6: have been a good fit for the Oh yeah.
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: Godcha everywhere he fit anywhere in the league. Yeah, yeah, no,
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: he's he's he's now one of the faces of the league.
- 1:47:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think just in terms.
- 1:47:40Speaker 6: Of I mean I just didn't know how, you know,
- 1:47:42Speaker 6: I just didn't know what all his opinions of him.
- 1:47:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I love him, I love him. Yah, we're big fans.
- 1:47:47Speaker 4: And I mean, I think part of it is just
- 1:47:49Speaker 4: if there was somebody in the style of Brady's game
- 1:47:51Speaker 4: and kind of in the style of mex game, that's.
- 1:47:53Speaker 5: What Burrow is.
- 1:47:53Speaker 3: I mean, you know, he's kind of a throwback, certainly athletic.
- 1:47:56Speaker 11: But quick yeah, just you know, you know, on on Minshew.
- 1:48:01Speaker 6: Why why do you think that Minshew wasn't even a
- 1:48:03Speaker 6: blip at that point when he was up.
- 1:48:06Speaker 3: Oh, I don't know. I can't speak to Gardner Minshew. Yeah,
- 1:48:09Speaker 3: Gardner Minshew. I don't think it's a very good play.
- 1:48:11Speaker 4: Yeah, it's got a good personality, Yeah, good, good, good
- 1:48:14Speaker 4: backup and you can have a game.
- 1:48:17Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, and he's he's been able to do that.
- 1:48:20Speaker 3: But yeah, I don't, I don't. She teases me with this,
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: why didn't we just go get Joe Bert?
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: But between Minshew and Burrow, imagine them on the same
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: team for arrivals, just the outfits alone.
- 1:48:30Speaker 3: Is Hey, we had Cam Newton here and those arrivals
- 1:48:32Speaker 3: are pretty cool.
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: That's true. That's true. Uh one in Monterey, Mexico, with
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: Judon not participating, could it simply just be keeping him
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: fresh to be able to last the whole season both years?
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: By the end of the season he looked exhausted and ps.
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: The reason mac Jones is playing better is because his babe,
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: Evan wanted Zappie more.
- 1:48:54Speaker 3: As soon as Evan went to Zapi, Max started claying show.
- 1:48:57Speaker 3: I don't know, man, I don't know what.
- 1:48:59Speaker 4: I don't know what to say, I mean, there's certainly
- 1:49:01Speaker 4: logically you can understand at these positions where the depth
- 1:49:04Speaker 4: it outside linebacker slash edge that Judon is the top
- 1:49:08Speaker 4: and for Trump Brown at tackle that it is a
- 1:49:10Speaker 4: significant drop off after those guys, And it makes every
- 1:49:14Speaker 4: bit of sense in the world to want to make
- 1:49:15Speaker 4: sure that they not only make it to the season healthy,
- 1:49:18Speaker 4: but stay fresh through the whole season. How with their
- 1:49:20Speaker 4: contract things going on the scenes, probably and hopefully they
- 1:49:23Speaker 4: get it figured out. But even if they get the
- 1:49:24Speaker 4: contract stuff figured out, do we think, like there's a
- 1:49:27Speaker 4: report in the morning Matthew Judon has signed, you know,
- 1:49:29Speaker 4: a contract extension, YadA, YadA, YadA, and then that day
- 1:49:32Speaker 4: he's out there in pads and ready to Like, right,
- 1:49:34Speaker 4: I still think that there's more to just a contract.
- 1:49:37Speaker 4: They're trying to manage him and Trump Brown.
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: All right. Catch twenty two will be at three o'clock
