- 0:00Hey, welcome to the integrate this edtech podcast
- 0:03of David burner and I am joined by award -winning
- 0:06educator featured in the timeless heroes documentary
- 0:09and assistant director at Roper Mountain Science
- 0:13Center Thomas real Thomas. Thanks for joining
- 0:16us Yeah, very excited to be here right and we
- 0:19were just talking to you. This is Your first
- 0:22time at ISTE, correct? Yes, it is. You've been
- 0:24associated with ASCD a little bit? Yeah, in the
- 0:27past I presented at ASCD many years ago when
- 0:29I was a young administrator. But first time at
- 0:31ISTE, excited to be here. Yeah, great. And you
- 0:34started off by going to, you were at Epcot, right?
- 0:37Yeah, we went to Magic Kingdom the first day
- 0:40and then we headed over to Epcot on Sunday and
- 0:44Animal Kingdom before that. We kind of did the
- 0:47park hopper thing. Two of my sons are down here
- 0:50with me. They're doing the parks while I'm at
- 0:51the conference now. Yeah. And one thing I didn't
- 0:54mention actually, too, is the Imaginary Education
- 0:57book. Yeah. And that connects you. Did you do
- 0:59the scavenger hunt at the... I did. With Toby?
- 1:02With Toby Fisher? Yes. Toby's got a great thing
- 1:04going on there. And yeah, I was there with them
- 1:07for a bit. I'd tap out a little bit early. I'd
- 1:10been at the parks since seven o 'clock that morning.
- 1:13Okay. So, but yeah, we did the meet up there
- 1:17from the book study that they did around my book.
- 1:18Yeah. Okay, is there anybody that, you know,
- 1:22we've been asking our guests, is there anybody
- 1:23that you've met with online only? I know besides
- 1:26us. Oh, you guys, first time in person is great.
- 1:30Yeah, is there anybody else that you're like,
- 1:31I was glad to finally meet that person. Yeah,
- 1:33Tina and Mantha and all these guys that were
- 1:36in our book chat. Rachel, these were folks I'd
- 1:41never met before in person. And then it's always
- 1:44cool to do that. Mary Alice Curran and I worked
- 1:47together for years and probably 10 years online
- 1:52before we finally met in person. That's always,
- 1:54always fun thing. Yeah. What is your experience
- 1:57at ISTE been like so far? Like first time being
- 2:00at this particular conference with the merger
- 2:02and all that. Yeah. Well, it's It's fascinating.
- 2:06I love being around the energy. I love being
- 2:08around the ideas. It's like drinking through
- 2:11a fire hose. I was telling someone on the elevator
- 2:13today, you know? That's a great way to put it.
- 2:16Yeah, it is. And if you come to my session today,
- 2:18you'll also... Drinking through a fire hose a
- 2:20lot to say a little bit of time, but that's the
- 2:22good thing I love the thing like this It's like
- 2:25going away to summer camp when you're a kid,
- 2:27you know You get all energized and everything
- 2:28But the most important thing is to take that
- 2:30energy back and what are you going to do with
- 2:32it? You know, you can come here we can sit around
- 2:34and say hey great job Love that but until we
- 2:36actually apply the things that we're talking
- 2:38about That's where the road meets the road and
- 2:40that's where the real impact happens Yeah, yeah,
- 2:43we actually, we had a group, we were talking
- 2:44about that last night too. You do, you definitely
- 2:46feel a sense of rejuvenation here and it does
- 2:49encourage you and inspire people I think to try
- 2:51to apply things to the things that they're doing
- 2:53in the classroom, right? You learn new ideas,
- 2:55you bring it to the classroom and that's where
- 2:57the change happens, right? That's it, but you
- 2:59have to do that next step, you know. Walt Disney
- 3:04used to say, you know, if you could dream it,
- 3:05you can do it. Some people say it's not attributed
- 3:07to him, but that's kind of attached to him. But
- 3:10Disney did say this. He said, how do you make
- 3:13something happen is to stop talking and start
- 3:15doing. And so a lot of times we come to places
- 3:18like this and we get energized, like you said,
- 3:20and we do a lot of talking, a lot of excitement.
- 3:22But when we get back, that's the real test. You
- 3:25know, it's time to stop talking and start doing.
- 3:27Let's jump in, roll our sleeves up and do the
- 3:29real work of transforming lives. Right, yeah,
- 3:32and transforming education, new name ISTE in
- 3:35the Society for Transforming Education, right?
- 3:38Transforming takes action, right? It does. Anything
- 3:41that's transformational is going to take action.
- 3:43But here's the thing too, you know, I would encourage
- 3:46everyone to take some time to reflect at the
- 3:49end of this conference or when you get back because
- 3:52I can't transform the lives of my students unless
- 3:55I'm transforming myself. I can't transform the
- 3:58work that I that you know the people around me
- 4:01Unless I'm doing the inner work myself, you know
- 4:03I can't give away that which I don't have and
- 4:05so if I'm wanting to My kids be more creative
- 4:07more imaginative and do these things when I have
- 4:10to do it kind of some self -reflection You say
- 4:11what how am I modeling that how do I do that
- 4:14myself? You know, I can't be a great leader unless
- 4:16I can lead myself Well, so it's something that
- 4:19I need to really check myself on it's like, okay.
- 4:21Let me start with me And then I can do it in
- 4:24others. It's like putting your oxygen mask on
- 4:26yourself first before you put someone else on
- 4:28the plane, right? So I have to be willing to
- 4:33be transformed and change myself before I can
- 4:35change the lives of others. Yeah, that's a great
- 4:36way to put it. And you mentioned the session
- 4:38that you're doing today. Yeah, right. So can
- 4:41you talk a little bit about the name of that
- 4:43session and what people can expect as they go
- 4:45to that session? What do you... hoping to achieve
- 4:49with that. Yeah, so it's based on a lot of the
- 4:52work in my book, Imagining Education is the name
- 4:55of the book, came out last fall. This session
- 4:58is called Reimagining Education, Transforming
- 5:01Learning Through Story, Space, and People. And
- 5:04we're going to hit on some of those main topics
- 5:07that I cover in the book about really four core
- 5:09pillars that I focus on. If you want to transform
- 5:12schools, then I think it comes down to, you know,
- 5:15what are the stories you're telling, being intentional
- 5:17about all of that? What are the spaces? How are
- 5:20we designing the spaces in which to tell those
- 5:22stories? What are the experiences that we're
- 5:25providing for students that fill those spaces?
- 5:29And then most importantly... How am I preparing
- 5:32and pouring into my teachers, my people? Whether
- 5:35it's a classroom teacher, how do I pour into
- 5:37my students? As a principal, as a leader, how
- 5:40am I pouring into my teachers? As a superintendent,
- 5:42how am I pouring into all of my entire district?
- 5:45So Walt used to say this, that you can create
- 5:48the biggest, greatest attractions, most beautiful
- 5:50buildings, but it's the people that make the
- 5:52magic. And it's the same thing here. So we're
- 5:53gonna be talking about those, kind of diving
- 5:55into those concepts today. Okay, and yeah, that's
- 5:58great. And hopefully we're going to try to make
- 5:59that session too and be part of that. I need
- 6:02some friendly faces in there, you know? Yeah,
- 6:04yeah. So that'll be good. And do you want to
- 6:06talk a little bit too just about the book, the
- 6:10connecting, the session connects to that. But
- 6:13what about the book? Can you give us a little
- 6:16bit more information about that? So the book
- 6:18was born out of a TEDx talk I gave about 15 years
- 6:22ago. I did it twice. picked up a lot of traction
- 6:26and got a lot of interest. So I said, you know,
- 6:28hey, one day I need to write a book about this
- 6:30and then kids life, all those things. And then
- 6:32I finally got around to it about 15 years later.
- 6:34But the book is based on the premise of one question
- 6:38of what if we design schools like Disney Designs
- 6:40theme parks? And this is not like a glorification
- 6:42of the Disney theme parks, although I'm a huge
- 6:46fan. It's how do we look at the work of world
- 6:49-class designers, experienced designers, the
- 6:51Imagineers? And what is it that they do that
- 6:55get people coming back time after time and creating
- 6:58wonderful memories there that people remember
- 7:02the rest of their lives. The more I went down
- 7:05the rabbit hole of how they do design, the more
- 7:07I realized they gave language to what I knew
- 7:10intuitively worked as a classroom teacher and
- 7:12as a principal. And so I began to play with these
- 7:14ideas of how do I apply these core design principles.
- 7:18two learning spaces and have had practice over
- 7:21the last 15 years doing that and has seen tremendous
- 7:25results with engagement. And that's what it's
- 7:28all about. Engagement is the foundation of everything
- 7:30else we do. So that's what the book's really
- 7:32about is how we dive into that and how do we
- 7:35use the resources that we have available to us,
- 7:38these tools. I walk in the vendor hall. It's
- 7:41all these amazing tools, but a tool is only as
- 7:43good as the person that uses it. And so, that's
- 7:46what a lot of the book is about. Yeah, and I
- 7:48really...I love to, like, when you were on a
- 7:51podcast, you talk about the story, right? The
- 7:53importance of story and connecting things that
- 7:56are familiar to things that are like stories
- 8:00that you...that are familiar to you and connecting
- 8:03those to, like, something like Indiana Jones.
- 8:06Oh, yeah, teaching the pop culture. Yeah, I love
- 8:07that. Yeah, so I taught world history for many
- 8:10years. I'm a social studies teacher by trade.
- 8:12Proud one. I love it. And football coach, same.
- 8:16I love it, man. Coaches can be some of the best
- 8:20teachers in the world, because we have to get
- 8:22immediate feedback. And that's a whole other
- 8:23thing. But yeah, story is important. And I had
- 8:28a lot of success teaching world mythology with
- 8:31Star Wars, because Lucas... developed that story
- 8:35around the concepts of the monomyth, Joseph Campbell's
- 8:39ideas about the universal hero, the hero with
- 8:43a thousand faces. And so I taught ancient history
- 8:47with Star Wars, with the original trilogy, and
- 8:51how we can introduce, I was introducing students
- 8:54to other, the stories of other cultures through
- 8:59teaching them. With a hook of Star Wars and it
- 9:03was very successful Indiana Jones the same way
- 9:05again It's it had I still remained in the classroom
- 9:08for any length of time after that I would have
- 9:10been using Harry Potter, you know Lord of the
- 9:12Rings when the movies came out Big fan. Oh, yeah.
- 9:15Yeah all that. Well, I mean seriously when I
- 9:17was in sixth grade my my sixth grade literature
- 9:20teacher miss Kovach Introduced me to the hobbit.
- 9:23We had to read The Hobbit and changed my life
- 9:26in terms of what's out there and in terms of
- 9:31literature, okay? And so that got me into Lord
- 9:33of the Rings after that, and then these epic
- 9:36heroes that I've always had a passion for going
- 9:39back to childhood. Yeah, yeah. I'm reading Lord
- 9:42of the Rings with my daughter right now. We're
- 9:43about halfway through the... Fellowship of the
- 9:46Ring. Okay. I thought you were going to say we're
- 9:48trying to slog through the dead marshes right
- 9:49now. Let me know how that goes. Call me and see
- 9:52how that goes. Yeah, I'll shoot you a message.
- 9:54Please do. So one last question for you, Thomas.
- 9:57What do you want to talk about just that you
- 9:59have coming up and things that, obviously you're
- 10:01here at ISTE, but what about after that, projects
- 10:04that you're working on, the Science Center, anything
- 10:07like that you want to talk about? Yeah, so my
- 10:10full -time gig is helping to lead world -class
- 10:14science center. If you ever come to Greenville,
- 10:15South Carolina, hit me up. Love to show you around.
- 10:18It's an incredible facility, 62 acres, owned
- 10:21by a school district. There were 100 ,000 square
- 10:23feet of learning space, outside trails. We have
- 10:27dinosaurs and we have sharks you can pet. The
- 10:30whole gamut. We build rockets and we build robots
- 10:34and we have a planetarium and all that. So those
- 10:37kind of things are exciting. That's my day job.
- 10:39Consulting with imagining education is something
- 10:42that's growing and picking up speed. So I do
- 10:44have some projects that I'm working on now. Can't
- 10:47talk about two of them. Wait, wait, and here
- 10:49back on one. I'm hoping I'll be able to announce
- 10:51that pretty soon. Another one I can announce
- 10:54later this fall. I've been working on that one
- 10:56since first of the year. incredible project.
- 10:59So yeah, it's what I really enjoy doing is helping
- 11:02people create these immersive spaces and experiences
- 11:05for learners of all ages. And both of these projects
- 11:09come to scratch that itch for me. So I do have
- 11:12the audio version of the book coming up. That's
- 11:14the next big thing. I've been in the studio recording
- 11:17that. And so that's going to be coming out. The
- 11:20goal is to have it out before the start of school.
- 11:23So end of August is when we... We plan on having
- 11:27that wrapped up. Okay, great. So make sure you
- 11:29follow Thomas on LinkedIn and everywhere else
