Transcript
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Dr.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Patty Ferris.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: I'm a board certified dermatologist, and I'm your host for this episode of the Science of Skin Podcast.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: And this is a really special episode because we're making a big announcement today.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to be joined by Kristen Rigg, who's a physician assistant in the dermatology space and a mover and a shaker.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: And I know lots of you out there know Kristen because she's a leader in her field.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: So we're super excited to have her today as our guest.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: So Kristen, welcome.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Dr.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: Ferris.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: I am thrilled to be here.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: I have uh really enjoyed getting to know you and Dr.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Lane better, and I'm really excited to talk about what we have planned today.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Well, we we are super excited to talk about our newest venture with the Science of Skin Summit.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: So, for those of you who've been to the summit, you know that our meeting is a very all-inclusive meeting.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: We have a very big tent at that meeting.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: We have our dermatology, plastic surgery colleagues, we have lots of people in the med spa space.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: We have an aesthetician track which has been very successful, and we're really proud of it.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: We love having the aestheticians there with us.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And what we're excited to announce today is that with the help of Kristen, we're going to be for the first time this year putting on a track specifically with programming and lectures by and for our physician assistant and nurse practitioner colleagues.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: And the reason Kristen's been invited today is because she is going to be directing that track and is taking the helm on helping us with the speakers and the content and everything that she thinks that her colleagues might like to see at the Science of Skin Summit.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: So, Kristen, I'm going to give you the floor for a few minutes, maybe can talk about the agenda and maybe why you think this meeting is going to be good for your colleagues.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: So we are so excited, as Dr.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Ferris mentioned, and I think the big thing is that the reason this came about, and I can let you talk a little bit more about that, but there's not really an NPPA space where we can learn alongside our physicians.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: And you and Dr.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Lane recognize that and chose to bring in NPs and PAs into your into your meeting where we can all learn together.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: We're collaborating in clinic together, we're working as teams together, and you recognize that there was this need for it.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: And overall, there hasn't been a lot of this opportunity in the space previously, and you recognize this.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: So you're bringing the NPs and PAs in this year.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: We're going to do a special track to celebrate and unify the NPs and the PAs on the first day, and we'll talk about that in just a minute.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: And then as the meeting goes on, the NPs and PAs are welcome throughout the meeting.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: And I think you have something special planned there as well, but I'll let you kind of talk about that in just a minute.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: So a little bit about our agenda.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: So we wanted to cater to every NP and PA, no matter what uh time or experience you're at in your career.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: So we have something from the new PA and NP, the intermediate, as well as those more advanced.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: And we really focused on developing a practical curriculum where you can bring your knowledge and experience that you learn in the conference right back to your clinic next day.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: And so we really focused on short bite-sized information that's really practical applications to make your clinic life more, excuse me, a bit easier and to have it be more efficient in your clinic.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Let's talk a little bit about the agenda and kind of uh, you know, I loved your input because I think Ted and I were maybe going not in the perfect direction.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: We had some good good ideas, but I love some of the things that you added to the agenda.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: So talk about it and give your colleagues an idea of what things they might be interested in learning.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: No, I don't think there was absolutely anything wrong with the agenda.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: I think what we decided as a team was that we may already see some of what that agenda was in the in the dermatology space.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: And so we decided to kind of take a different angle.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna start off with clinical challenges, we're gonna decipher immunology and inflammatory skin disease.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk about how to optimize your rheumatology dermatology management.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: So, what does your rheumatology colleague want to know when you're sending them out the door?
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Because a lot of times we're overlapping labs and maybe don't have the closest relationship.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: And so we want to talk about building that and how to make that a better for both you and for your patients.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: We're also going to be talking about advanced topical therapies and being in the post-steroid era.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Are we there yet?
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Are we still utilizing those medications and really what those options are?
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: And we have a packed agenda, but something we're also doing a little bit different is talking about how to pick the right biologic.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Do you know Jack and the new medications that are coming down the pipeline that'll make life better for your patient?
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: We're also going to be talking about GLP1s and naturopathic approach to inflammatory disease.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: So whether you're in a place that is prescribing GLP1s or if you just need to know a little bit more about it, that kind of takes up a bit of the morning.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: And then in our next session, we're going to talk a little bit about ingredients and primers because there's not one patient visit that somebody couldn't benefit from a skincare regimen more than just sunscreen, or they may be asking how to anti-age, and you might not have the knowledge or the wherewithal to really build a good cosmetic regimen.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: So we're bringing some of our colleagues in from the aesthetic space.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: So even if you're not practicing a lot of cosmetic dermatology, you can still absolutely benefit this.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: I don't practice any cosmetic dermatology, but there's not a day that goes by that I couldn't build a better regimen for my patients.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: So we're going to be talking about everything from cutting edge to the to the tried and true.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: So everything from retinoids to discoloration.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: We're going to be talking about acids and peptides.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: We're going to be talking about a pregnancy-safe skincare because there's so much change over time with these medications.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: Can you use them?
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Can you use those ingredients?
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: And I believe you're giving that talk for us, Dr.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: Ferris.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: And then we're going to put it all together and we're going to talk about We are too.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: I just I I uh couldn't be more pleased to be working with you and Dr.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Lane and how open and welcoming you've been to our profession.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: And so we're really thrilled.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: And then the last section will kind of talk about clinical conundrums and our professional development.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: So, how do you carry yourself?
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: How do you network?
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: What are things you can do to build your professional presence and if uh go after the dreams outside of the clinic, whether it's being an MSL, publishing, research, whatever that may be, we're gonna give you the the tips to go further in that.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: So we're really excited.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: We love this agenda.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Love your agenda.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: It's so great.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: You had a heavy hand in this, and you've got a lot of great speakers.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: We're very excited about it.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Um it's it's great.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: And we probably should let everybody know that the Science of Skin Summit this year is in Austin, Texas, at the Fairmont Hotel.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: It's the 17th of September through the 20th.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: And the NPS Sthetician track will be on Thursday, the 17th.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: It's not too far away, so it's not too soon to register.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Registration is open on the Science of Skinsummit.com.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: And um, everybody is welcome, not only, of course, to come to the specific track on Thursday afternoon for PAs and NPs, but then we'd like you to join us in the main sessions on Friday and Saturday and Sunday morning and learn alongside of your physician colleagues as well.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: And again, we hope to see everybody there.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: And I think it's incredible because we're learning and we're working with our physician colleagues, but then there's not a space where we can really all learn together.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: And you and Dr.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Lane have created that.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: So I couldn't be more thrilled to be part.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Well, we'll we're gonna have the entire office in there because we're gonna have the aestheticians, we're gonna have the nurse practitioners, the PAs, and the dermatologists, and hopefully clinicians of other specialties as well.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: And as I mentioned in the in the beginning, we have a lot of med spa um owners and people who practice in the med spa setting.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: So that's another uh group that we really love having because they have a very unique perspective on the aesthetic space and what's going on right there.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: We're also hoping to, and I think we're starting to reach out now to some of our nurse practitioner and PAs to have them join us also on podium at the main track.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: So we're doing a lot of case-based learning this year, so it's a little bit different than we've been doing in the past, where we've had PowerPoint after PowerPoint.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: So we'll be doing some case-based learning, which is a great place where we can incorporate our nurse practitioner and physician assistant colleagues as well.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: And then, of course, um there'll be some opportunities giving lectures as well.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: But all of that is sort of yet to come, and we're working diligently to put together uh this aesthetician, I mean, this uh PA and nurse practitioner track.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: And we will still have our esthetician track.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: So if you have an aesthetician in your practice that you think might benefit from that, that is again, it's been very popular.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: We have a great agenda there as well.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: And um, and then you're welcome to join us throughout the entire time of the meeting.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: So, Kristen, anything else you want to want to reach out and say to your colleagues before we wrap it up?
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Well, I really think that this is cutting edge.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: We're putting NPs and PAs on the podium and the main stage for these case-based presentations, and you're not going to want to miss that.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: And I think it's really showing the true collaboration of what NPs and PAs want to work alongside their physicians in a team-based environment.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: So I couldn't be more thrilled.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: And I had a question for you, Patty.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: For those people who haven't been to the conference, what are your what are your highlights and the things that you love the most?
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: You know, the the Science of Skin Summit has uh really changed over the six years.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: So I guess we're gonna be in seven since Ted and I started it.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: And honestly, you know, I'm a skincare girl, as you know, Kristen.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: So we started as the science of skincare.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Our focus was skin care for the first several years.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: But what Ted and I realized was that skin care influences and impacts every single aspect of both medical dermatology, surgical dermatology, cosmetic dermatology.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: So we really felt that we had to expand it.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: We've had some very good uh tracks and discussions on regenerative medicine.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: We have a longevity track, which was very popular last year as well.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: And we see skin care and procedures now moving in this direction.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: So we're no longer just painting that sort of anti-aging picture.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: We're really looking at how do we modulate these pathways that influence skin longevity and skin span.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: So this is also super exciting.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: And as you know, Ted and I are in 2027 going to be hosting the first Science of Skin Longevity Summit, and that'll be in February of 2027 in Scottsdale.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Just in case we didn't have enough to do, Kristen, Ted's got has another great idea, but we're super excited about it, and uh as are the manufacturers who are all very heavily looking at this particular space.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: So those are some of my favorites.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: I sit through the esthetician track because I learned so much in there from the aestheticians.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Um, we also have uh an innovator uh session where people who have new companies can come and they can present like their technologies, and it's kind of like a shark tank.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: And then we have people on the podium who do investing and they talk about the technologies and what they might be interested in.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of a cool session.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: That's also very popular.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: So there's lots of great things going on.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: We have some really good medical dermatology this year, and we were expanding that quite a bit, and we're gonna have a lot of aesthetics as well, especially case-based learning.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: So, looking at patients with fillers, how would you treat this patient?
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: What are the common complications?
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Looking at patients with energy-based devices, same type of a format.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: So I like the case-based learning um agenda this year.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: I think it's gonna be a little bit different, but I think it's gonna allow us to, again, bring in all of our colleagues and get everybody's sort of opinion on how they handle certain types of patients.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: So it's just a very robust agenda.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: We have two tracks going almost throughout the entire meeting.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: So you'll be able to pick and choose kind of what you want to see.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: And then our product theaters at the Science of Skin Summit are, I think, particularly valuable because we have so many people that really are invested particularly in skin care and in topical therapies, prescription topical therapies, and they all when our uh product theaters happen, those rooms are really full.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: You know, it's not we we don't run them simultaneously with other sessions.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: So if you want to learn about products, which I think from our discussions, a lot of the PAs and NPs want to know more about products, all the products that are launching will have product theaters.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: What's the technology?
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: What is the science behind it?
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: And very often it'll be the scientists who invented or developed the products or the formulators actually giving the product theaters.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: So that's another one of my favorite parts is I learned so much in the product theater.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: So I think there's just lots and lots of really robust material that people can can learn, learn about, and I think will enjoy learning about.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: I think that was well said, and I think that's another very appealing aspect that you can pick your track.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: You don't have to just go one way or the other.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: You can pick the lectures you're interested in.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: So maybe you're a newer injector, but you can go to that lecture, but you can still learn the medical derm.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: So we have it all set up in a in a really neat, neat way.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's gonna it's gonna be great.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: So lots of opportunities, and we're really excited about this.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: And Kristen, I can't thank you again.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: You've really taken the helm with this, and you know, I think led Ted and I in the right direction.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: We're so grateful.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: We hope that if there are NPs and PAs out there listening or dermatologists or practitioners who have NPs or PAs in their practice, that they will consider sending them to the Science of Skin Summit.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: We would be love to have them join us and be a part of our community.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: And as I said, we're we've always started this meeting wanting to have a very large tent.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: And so the tent's just gonna get a little fuller, Kristen.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: That's all.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: And we're really excited to be part.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: I know I speak for for many of us, so thank you for your invitation.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: And listen, everybody, we're so grateful for you listening to the Science of Skin podcast.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: If you love this podcast, please give us a review and follow us and uh subscribe to the podcast.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: We're most grateful.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Our our following is getting bigger and bigger, and we are most grateful for you uh to listening to this podcast.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: And I hope that this NPPA track will be of value and of interest to many of you out there listening.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Again, the Science of Skin Summit.com registration is open.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for joining us.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: And Kristen, thanks again for being my guest.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Dr.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: Ferris.
