- 0:31Hello and welcome. Happy Christmas, Christmas, it's
- 0:37Anime Club. And today is our special, very,
- 0:40very special Boxing Day episode where we're doing a double
- 0:44feature. And because it's very special
- 0:46and at Christmas you spend time with the ones that you love,
- 0:50we've got our very special friend Tony.
- 0:52Hello, Tony. Say hello to the people.
- 0:55Hello. Merry Christmas everyone.
- 0:59Merry Christmas. And of course, there's me,
- 1:04Santa, and my happy little snow snowman friend, Frosty Chris.
- 1:13I'm Santa's solicitor. Yeah, Frosty, frosty, frosty,
- 1:21frosty and Rudolph. And before we talk about the the
- 1:30films that we're going to cover this week, what snacks have you
- 1:35guys got? Because Christmas is not only a
- 1:37time to spend your days with loved ones, it's also a time to
- 1:42stuff your face. Show me your.
- 1:46Show me your stacks. Right.
- 1:50So I was bad obviously at Christmas, so I didn't get
- 1:56anything. So I've been in the box and
- 1:57their sale at IKEA today and picked up this little Swedish
- 2:01treat of Dimeos or whatever their own version is.
- 2:06Oh shit, yes, to me that's a good shout.
- 2:10You should say shit, yes. I did.
- 2:17That's how Santa rolls. Now it's Boxing Day.
- 2:21Boxing Day is like the one day he gets off.
- 2:25True, true. Very cool.
- 2:30What was that? You were maybe?
- 2:30Is that one of the dime bars? Yeah.
- 2:33That nice? Yeah.
- 2:35What about you, Chris? What have you got?
- 2:37Well, as you say, that time between Christmas and New Year's
- 2:41is like the dead zone where you just live on leftover food
- 2:45snacks and you don't know what time it is.
- 2:47So I've got three snacks. I have a Milky bar thing,
- 2:55chocolate crumble. Oh.
- 2:56Yeah, OK, nice. I've got some leftover chocolate
- 3:00crumble. Yeah, got some leftover after 8.
- 3:04And I do you ever do you ever turn the the after 8 packages
- 3:10into little helmets for your action men?
- 3:11Batman helmets? No, just me.
- 3:14What? Like as an adult.
- 3:18Yeah, you're at what? I don't know.
- 3:23You've lost. You've lost.
- 3:25You've lost all joy in your life.
- 3:27And was that, Was that Terry's chlorine?
- 3:30Caramel one but I've got nothing.
- 3:32You hit it off against his. My walls are like plaster so
- 3:37I've done that before and I've come up with a massive bruise on
- 3:40me head and I'll. Find something I just sometimes
- 3:47I just just find on the floor. What, like punches?
- 3:53Yeah. I think I did break it broke on
- 3:57the wrong side. How still this?
- 4:00It's just it's spherical. How can you break your wrong
- 4:03side, you madman? I know what I mean man, I know.
- 4:08I actually did break it properly.
- 4:11Nice. Oh, look at that fist or fists
- 4:15of steel. I've got some.
- 4:18I've got some from Asia Mart. Thank you.
- 4:21Asia Martin Worthing. I've got some roasted tofu.
- 4:26It's densed sauce and superior taste.
- 4:31Exclamation mark. That's what is on the packet.
- 4:34Densed sauce experience. And then some.
- 4:37Like weird peachy things. I also got this strange
- 4:41flavoured cotton candy and some seaweed cracker things and a
- 4:49free lumpy juice. It's going to be my first time
- 4:51trying lumpy juice. Hell, we are.
- 4:54And it says free. How?
- 4:55How do you know it's free? Yeah, good question.
- 5:01So, so, yeah. And when you drink that lumpy
- 5:05juice, you're going to neck it. Yeah, probably not all of it all
- 5:09in one go, but I'll take a big old swallow of it seems only
- 5:12sporting. It's it's going to be fun, you
- 5:15drinking it, especially when your background blows it out.
- 5:18It's. Going to get wild here in the
- 5:25North Pole when you didn't realise the North Pole was a
- 5:29strip club and there's just a woman just necking something.
- 5:39So what are we doing this week guys?
- 5:41We had a double feature and we watched 2 films that were
- 5:46originally aired together. So this was originally they were
- 5:49done as a double feature in Japan for children.
- 5:53I just want to say that upfront. Apparently they were both both
- 5:56marketed as children's films. Got to teach your life lessons?
- 6:02What a secret life lesson. Eat your food.
- 6:09Never mind kids starving in Africa, there's kids starving
- 6:12here in this house. And we watched Grave of the
- 6:18Fireflies, what might be one of the most depressing anime films
- 6:24of all time, if not the most depressing.
- 6:26Like I can't think of a single and other anime film that has
- 6:29left me sailing as sad as this film did.
- 6:34And the sweetest, one of the sweetest, most beloved anime
- 6:38films of all time. My neighbor.
- 6:39Totoro. Totoro.
- 6:42Totoro, Totoro. You're going to mock me the
- 6:45whole time. And I can see it in your eyes,
- 6:46Chris. I mean, I would say.
- 6:50To help if you do it in the accent something.
- 6:53If you do it in the accent, then it sounds.
- 6:57This accent. No the.
- 6:59I've already, I've already got an accent.
- 7:03This TV is actually quite good. But we'll start with as as the
- 7:10as the directors intended and the production studio intended.
- 7:15We're going to start with Grave of the Fireflies.
- 7:21Oh, it was that old eventually. Did you go Grave of the Fan?
- 7:24Yeah. Nice.
- 7:25Then my day up right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:27That was how you imagine to watch that.
- 7:32Can you imagine if it was the other way around?
- 7:34Now you've watched this lovely film My neighbor tried to write.
- 7:38Time to watch Grave of the Fire. Yeah.
- 7:47So what would how would you describe this to someone who'd
- 7:50never seen it before? I would probably wind them up
- 7:54and say it's a bit like, it's a bit like Princess and the Frog
- 7:58and the fireflies are like the guy in Princess and the Frog.
- 8:03These here with the I forget what he calls the the North Star
- 8:07that he's in love with. Yeah.
- 8:09Yeah. No, Evangeline, never seen this.
- 8:15That I actually did. I actually thought this was like
- 8:18an amazing film, but to describe it, it's just like, yeah, like
- 8:25you said, the Preston and Heart ruin, but it is actually a
- 8:28really amazing film at the same time.
- 8:31Yeah. What's it about?
- 8:39How would you describe it, Chris?
- 8:40Me. So I would say it follows
- 8:43siblings called Seder and set to go and basically you follow them
- 8:50as they they find out that both their parents are dead and they
- 8:54become homeless and they slowly starve to death.
- 8:58Actually the the older brother starves death at the start of
- 9:02the film and then it mementos and starting through flashbacks
- 9:06it shows how we got to that point and you slowly watch his
- 9:09little kid sister die of malnutrition.
- 9:12It's one for all the family. Like.
- 9:18I was watching it. Watching.
- 9:21It is animated amazingly, but afterwards it was just like, you
- 9:25know, when you're driving home from work and you turn the radio
- 9:27off? Which one?
- 9:32I told me that you think that is why it got put.
- 9:35That is why they've done it as a double feature, wasn't it?
- 9:37So that's, you know, you watch tutorial straight away
- 9:39afterwards filled with a little bit of joy, but.
- 9:45It restores the hope in you. Yeah, it's, it's incredibly
- 9:51depressing. It's based on a based on a
- 9:54novel, which is based on which is an A written.
- 9:58It's based on a true story and is written as an apology to the
- 10:01writer's sister. So he's and the the author of
- 10:06the novel. I was looking up interviews with
- 10:09him and he said, Oh yeah, the the death of the death of Is it
- 10:15Setsuko, the girl, the little girl?
- 10:19Yeah, Yeah, that's a good. The death of Setsuko is pretty
- 10:24much exactly how his own sister died.
- 10:27And I was like, Oh no, that makes it 100 times more
- 10:33embarrassing. And he also says that it's not
- 10:37an so the the director said it wasn't an anti war film, it was
- 10:44an anti nationalism film. It's a film all about loneliness
- 10:47and isolation and how that like kills, kills people.
- 10:51Which which of course is so much better than, so much better than
- 10:56an anti war film, so much lighter and more.
- 11:01The the only, the only time I ever got anything like that was
- 11:06from their anti who was just like, so she took their mother's
- 11:13old clothes and sold them for rice as a little like backhand
- 11:19at the farmers. And and it was kind of like
- 11:23she'd take that rice and she would give it to her husband and
- 11:26their cousin, her daughter, and be like, Oh yeah, they're going
- 11:29contributing to the nation. She's yeah, cousin is going to
- 11:32work every day. Used to or just as in like a 10
- 11:36year old enough toddler, 3-4 year old are just sitting on
- 11:41your bums all day so you'll get no rice and you're like, there's
- 11:45a very strong you have to contribute to the nation to get
- 11:49some sort of reward. I kind of got it from that, but
- 11:52the rest of the film doesn't give us any of that.
- 11:57So I I thought, I think this SATA also wants to follow in his
- 12:01father's footsteps. So his father is an A Japanese
- 12:05naval officer. And that's how, oh, that's how
- 12:10he dies at the beginning. And there's something about him.
- 12:16And I don't know how clearly this comes across in the film
- 12:21because I only got this because I was looking up interviews with
- 12:23Takahata, who's the director who was saying it's it's because he
- 12:28wants to set up a kind of pure family and his own family.
- 12:32So he kind of takes Setsuko away from the rest of society.
- 12:38And in doing that, he kind of dooms them both because he cuts
- 12:43them off from any help. And you see it with like the
- 12:46police officer when he's like stealing food and then he gets
- 12:49captured. There's just so much sad stuff
- 12:52that happens. And the police officer kind of
- 12:54gives him a break. Instead of, like, being able to,
- 12:57like, lean in and ask for help, he feels like he has to, like,
- 13:01keep going and be the man. Like he never, he never is able
- 13:04to ask for help. And I guess that's where the
- 13:06kind of the apology to the sister bit comes in as well.
- 13:09But yeah, like you say, it's a film about two war orphans.
- 13:13They have a very, very sad, sad life.
- 13:19And you basically just watch them struggle for food until
- 13:22they both die. It's very sad and it's very,
- 13:25very sad. And there's also.
- 13:27So Takahata was also like lived through the incendiary bombing
- 13:32in Japan. So he going into the film, he
- 13:35knew that he wanted to like animate some very realistic
- 13:39bombing scenes. So as well as being quite like a
- 13:42slow film at times, that also it has these moments where you're
- 13:46like, oh, this is like quite like lots of sparks, lots of
- 13:53yeah, moments that break up that slowness.
- 13:55Yeah. It's sad, bit gross, but he also
- 14:00compared it to like a double suicide film.
- 14:04So there are like these things called double suicide plays like
- 14:06Romeo and Juliet. And he said that's what he sees
- 14:09it as. He sees it as a double suicide
- 14:11story rather than a rather than like an anti war film.
- 14:16She's. Why'd she say it's suicide?
- 14:19Because like, it was their choice to go and live in a cave
- 14:23kind of thing. Yeah, well, and, and also in
- 14:27double, in double suicide plays, it's never really the people who
- 14:31dies fault that they die. They're always a victim of
- 14:34society. So if you think about Romeo and
- 14:36Juliet, they're star crossed from the beginning.
- 14:40And it's like, and, and actually in exactly the same way, they
- 14:43have a prologue which tells you that they're both going to die
- 14:46before the play even starts. And in a similar way, you see,
- 14:50because you see him dying right at the beginning, you you kind
- 14:53of know his fate before you've even watched the story.
- 14:57And I think that's the only thing that really, nothing can
- 15:00really prepare you for watching a three-year old starve to death
- 15:03that is like slowly can really get you ready.
- 15:09Yeah. Slow It's it's not like, oh, she
- 15:12never it was just like, oh, is she going to No, Molly.
- 15:15Molly was watching this with us because this this is the first
- 15:18anime she's watched. Which was a terrible thing to do
- 15:22to her. Chris, why did you do that?
- 15:25Yep. Why did you recommend this and
- 15:27throw the whole thing? Molly was just like I've got a
- 15:30horrible feeling like all the way through and she was like,
- 15:34does one of them die? And I'm like, ah, but I cannot
- 15:38see anything. Obviously, you saw the little,
- 15:40the older one die and she's all right.
- 15:43And then there's a scene where EMS sets to go, doesn't wake up,
- 15:51but she's asleep. And she's, oh, no, I thought she
- 15:53died there. I would have been heartbroken.
- 15:55I was like, Oh well, this is going to go down like a lead
- 15:57balloon. We got a message in the.
- 16:01I got a message from her on Discord which was like, I think
- 16:05it was the yeah, she was like, it's awful.
- 16:08I hate you. Why did you recommend this?
- 16:10I'm never listening to any recommendations.
- 16:12You, you ever tell me for films? Zero of 10, zero of. 10 And then
- 16:18the next day I also got a message from her being like,
- 16:20I've, I've thought about it and it's actually very, very
- 16:24beautiful, very well made. Still incredibly depressing,
- 16:29yeah, but she did give it like AI think she gave it a nine out
- 16:32of 10 after like the next day after the sadness had faded a
- 16:36bit, which I thought was quite a high mark.
- 16:38So. But she did also say she'd never
- 16:40watch it again. Yeah.
- 16:43Yeah, it is something that like, you're not going to forget it
- 16:46after you watched it. It's going to stay with you
- 16:48like. Yeah, she did check on Finley
- 16:51afterwards. Yeah, she did check on our small
- 16:56child. Feed him a few extra sweets the
- 17:02next day. Make sure he doesn't have pretty
- 17:08poos. The most harrowing scene for me
- 17:17was when apart from the death was within, the farmer is taken
- 17:27say her away and she's like shouting say it.
- 17:30I say it. I was like, Oh my God, this is
- 17:32absolutely brutal. Yeah, because you're like, you
- 17:36don't realize how small she is. And if you think about it,
- 17:39because you've got kids as well, would you leave a child that
- 17:44young to just wander about the countryside?
- 17:47Three years old, there's a baby. Yeah.
- 17:53Yeah. And then towards the end it it
- 17:54shows, yeah, playing all by yourself and that around that
- 17:57area, I don't know, like because obviously he had a lever to try
- 18:00and get food. Yes, so that was actually it's
- 18:05I'm sure it's a theme in Ghibli films because it's like even
- 18:09though the mighty but total I'm like, you're a you're a child.
- 18:12Why they left you alone to just wander about in the forest and
- 18:16stuff. It was different in the 90s.
- 18:19True. I used to wonder about it.
- 18:24They used to worry. Well up until the 90s.
- 18:27I was wondering about to be fair, on a campsite most
- 18:31summers, but they were Reed beds.
- 18:34I shouldn't have been in for sure.
- 18:39See, I'm sure. The.
- 18:42The Bull Jeff case happened when I was like 3, so I was the same.
- 18:45I was roughly the same age as the as the little kid.
- 18:48So I was just like, no, we're not going to leave them alone.
- 18:53We're the same age and that makes me feel sad, like my
- 19:00parents are like they'll be fine.
- 19:04I see that has that things like that did change the way, well,
- 19:08parenting is done in general, really.
- 19:11So yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:15And probably for the better. Normally I would talk about
- 19:20favorite characters and those things, but that doesn't feel
- 19:25quite right. What were some of the kind of,
- 19:31like, most memorable moment or like some of the moments that
- 19:33kind of got to you? You mentioned like when the
- 19:36farmer's taking SATA away after he gets caught stealing food.
- 19:43Yeah, there's there's a few. Other bits.
- 19:45There's a few for me, like there's at the end after Cetigo
- 19:50dies. You see what she was doing when
- 19:53she was alone, so she was playing by herself, She's
- 19:55catching bugs and doing all this sort of stuff.
- 19:58And then there was the scene where just over the river.
- 20:02And there's a family comes back and moves into the house and
- 20:05it's just like a normal family where it's a group of girls who
- 20:08would just say, oh, yeah, wouldn't come back.
- 20:10And I can finally listen to the radio again.
- 20:12And I can do this. And probably, but I've been so
- 20:14hard, don't you? Because I've been evacuated to
- 20:16another part of the country in my holiday home or whatever.
- 20:19And I was like, this is horrible.
- 20:26It's breath. Yeah, Yeah.
- 20:32How do you, because I'm trying to remember when this was made.
- 20:35I think it's like 80. It's a 2000.
- 20:37Is it 88? Was it really that early?
- 20:41Yeah, because it was at the same time as top law.
- 20:45Oh yeah, of course. Do you, how do you feel like it
- 20:48holds up animation wise? Yeah, 1988, that's wild.
- 20:56I think it holds up great. It still looks amazing.
- 21:00I kind of followed that. I don't know if I'll watch some
- 21:02sort of remake though, like remaster because I never know
- 21:06because I like I watched them the next film, My Neighbor
- 21:09Totoro, A remake and it looks amazing.
- 21:13But I remember watching the original and that looking a bit
- 21:16fuzzy and you can tell it was made but then so I don't know.
- 21:21It's like digitally remastered. Yeah, it was on the Netflix.
- 21:26I watched it I think and I think it has been remastered.
- 21:30But Toonie hasn't watched that much.
- 21:33Anime what? What did you?
- 21:34Think of it. Yeah, I thought it would look
- 21:47really good, especially, well, I haven't got on a torture yet,
- 21:50but that just looked like incredible.
- 21:53Yeah. Where's my camera not working
- 21:55there I. Think it was.
- 21:57A really long time. It just looked like your brain
- 22:04was buffering. Yeah.
- 22:06No. Chris should edit out the
- 22:09pauses. It's fine.
- 22:12Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I so the another thing that I
- 22:17was so this was a quite groundbreaking anime films at
- 22:23the time, a lot of animators were told that they couldn't do
- 22:26realistic depictions of Japan as like in the backgrounds.
- 22:31And then this film comes in and the director's like, no, it has
- 22:35to be as realistic as possible. And the children have to feel
- 22:40like children that you would that those kids who were going
- 22:44to be sitting in the cinema watching, they have to be able
- 22:47to relate to them. They have to feel like 9th
- 22:49graders. Well, let.
- 22:52Me say because you really. Yeah, I wonder what was he, what
- 22:57was his goal mate, of doing that to like kids, basically Seems so
- 23:03like sedition, yes. Well, I think he was woken up on
- 23:09a Sunday morning by laughing kids and he was psyched now.
- 23:13Not anymore. One too many times I'm going to
- 23:17have this and this will play in every household at 6:00 AM No,
- 23:25so he's so his whole thing was that he wanted to make a film
- 23:28that was an about, about how nationalism damages society and
- 23:37how it marginalises people who are vulnerable.
- 23:42So he he so he thinks that like ultimately, like when he was
- 23:48reading this, the original novel, he fit like and I think
- 23:51this is true of the author as well.
- 23:52So the original novel is very like anti imperial Japan.
- 23:58And actually his next film, which never got it got cancelled
- 24:02part way through production, was supposed to be another film
- 24:06which was anti imperialism and anti nationalism, which which
- 24:10was going to be about the kind of the occupation it's happening
- 24:16with China and got cancelled because of the Tiananmen Square
- 24:21protests. So it never made it to it.
- 24:26No, because the studio was just like in it's in Japan.
- 24:29There was suddenly a lot of very like anti Chinese, anti imperial
- 24:34feeling and they thought a film that was set half in China would
- 24:40just wouldn't be well received. So they cancelled his next film
- 24:44race, but he even but he even like so the kanji for Firefly.
- 24:50There are two different ways you can write Firefly in Japanese.
- 24:53There's the common way, which is to do with like a fluorescent
- 24:56that translates kind of to fluorescent light bulb.
- 25:00And there's another way that you can write Firefly, which
- 25:02translates for drops of fire, which is like a common term for
- 25:06the incendiary bombings that happened.
- 25:09So I think in, if you were reading the title in Japanese,
- 25:12there's another kind of like early warning that this is going
- 25:14to be like, because Grave of the Fireflies sounds almost
- 25:17romantic. And like you both said, there's
- 25:19a kind of like almost like a whimsy to it when it's
- 25:22translated into English. Whereas I think if you're
- 25:25reading the kanji and you see drops of you, you see that
- 25:29double meaning to it really early on, that this is going to
- 25:32be something that is about the impact of war on society.
- 25:38I don't think the title would be as good if it was Grave of the
- 25:41Fireflies in brackets. These are bombs.
- 25:48No, but it would be. That would be a fair warning,
- 25:51yeah. Yeah.
- 25:53Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, that's one of the
- 25:56other things I think that he was trying to do.
- 25:58But like I said, like the original writer, he was it, it's
- 26:01his story. So he, he lost his family
- 26:05because of the, because of the war and then was left to left to
- 26:12like raise his little sister who ended up dying like like Setsuko
- 26:18does in the films. And he was, I was reading one
- 26:21interview with him and he was like, I always thought I was the
- 26:24kind of person who would share food with my sister until I was
- 26:27starving. And then I, as soon as I got
- 26:30food, I ate it. And then I felt remorse.
- 26:33So it's like having, yeah, it's like having the weight of that
- 26:38kind of on the soul. I think it's, even if it's not
- 26:43intentionally anti war, I think anything that shows like a true
- 26:46depiction of the impact that of what happens when, yeah, when
- 26:52resources are diverted away from civilians will kind of
- 26:58inherently have that element to it because you're seeing the
- 27:01impact on children or innocent people.
- 27:06So yeah, heavy stuff. Happy Christmas.
- 27:09Kids feel better. Kids feel.
- 27:12You could put a, you could put a, you could put a spin on it,
- 27:16you could say, right. So maybe maybe it's trying to
- 27:21teach kids not to be stubborn and, like, actually seeking
- 27:25adults for help if they're starving to death, Maybe, like,
- 27:29yeah. That's the moral of the story.
- 27:33If you're hungry, go find it. Yeah, yeah, it's in.
- 27:39Don't drink pond water. Eat your vegetables or you'll
- 27:44get firebombed. So.
- 27:50Here's a question. It's a kids film, right?
- 27:52You're both fathers? Yep, I don't have children.
- 27:56And also my own father is the kind of father who at a very
- 28:01young age was reading me When the Wind Blows.
- 28:03I don't know if you've read or seen When the Wind Blows by
- 28:05Raymond Briggs, but it's about an old couple who slowly die.
- 28:09There's a it's an old couple. They're the last surviving
- 28:11humans after a nuclear Holocaust, and they slowly die
- 28:15of radiation poisoning. That's the story.
- 28:18So I was meant that about four. So my sense of what is OK to
- 28:25give to children to consume probably not to be trusted.
- 28:28And I'm curious, would you let your children watch this, and if
- 28:32so, at what age? No.
- 28:37Steve. That may not, would you not, Not
- 28:40at all. No asking about.
- 28:42Oh, that's nice. I've got a 5 year old child and
- 28:46I don't want to really introduce the concept of war yet.
- 28:51So I think he's pretty. He doesn't really know what it's
- 28:55about. Stick to yeah.
- 28:58Yeah, Paw Patrol and this, I've done that much not idea, but
- 29:06total. Yeah, Raymond Briggs, he
- 29:09mentioned. Was that the same one who did
- 29:11the Snowman and Santa Claus? There it is.
- 29:15It is. Chris and I were talking about
- 29:16this and we were like, in a way, this double feature is a bit
- 29:20Raymond Bricks because you've got Wind and Blows in terms of
- 29:24Grave of the Fireflies, but then you also have like the Snowman
- 29:29and Santa Claus in terms of Nine neighbor Totoro.
- 29:31It's that kind of dichotomy of what people are able to create.
- 29:38Yeah, as we move on to the snowman equivalent.
- 29:42Oh, sorry, what are you? Going to say, I was just going
- 29:44to say my, my headphone is saying battery low and that'll
- 29:48be caught up on the ordeal. So that's fun.
- 29:53That's. Amazing.
- 29:56Oops. We are professionals and it's
- 29:59Christmas. This is our Christmas special.
- 30:03It's we're talking everything we've got.
- 30:07We might one might have to pause.
- 30:15You're such a bastard. You do stuff like that all the
- 30:22time, and then you just start getting played like we're
- 30:24supposed to be normal. Where were we?
- 30:27Great with the fireflies. OK, so you wouldn't let your
- 30:29kids watch it, Would you Watch it again?
- 30:33No. 9,000,000 years. I appreciate for what it was,
- 30:40but it does does not need any rewatch.
- 30:44That's fair. Uh, should we move on to the
- 30:50second part of our double feature, the part that's used to
- 30:53restore hope? I'm trying really hard to just
- 30:57carry on like normal, but it's very difficult with those
- 31:00headphones. I think it's the headphones plus
- 31:02the suit plus the glasses are just, they're just, it's just
- 31:06killing. It's just making like a yeah.
- 31:10It will. It's in his Twitch stream
- 31:12outfit. Yes.
- 31:15It does. It feels very, very Twitch
- 31:17stream, a charity stream. Let's.
- 31:20Raise 1000. Pounds and I'll take my tie off.
- 31:25See, I thought it was. Given like work of men's club DJ
- 31:29it is. Giving that as well.
- 31:33But with the kids headphones, it's adding a level of sinister
- 31:36I think, and it sounds a good one.
- 31:40I get paid in pints, I chat. Yeah, yeah, 3 drinks tokens.
- 31:49And you're not allowed to choose from the top shelf.
- 31:54Moving on. My neighbor Totoro.
- 31:57Yeah, a very different film. Lot less dead kids.
- 32:00Supposed to be a. Lot.
- 32:02Less as in 0. The right number for an animated
- 32:06children's film of Dead Kids 0. My Neighbor Totoro is.
- 32:16We're back in Studio Ghibli. The powerhouse that is.
- 32:21Are you OK, Zacky? No, I just completely forgot.
- 32:29I completely forgot. Why Zacky's there?
- 32:32I can slowly hear my like like my anime fan membership being
- 32:39revoked. Directed by my.
- 32:43Zaki, we've got Joe Kizashi doing the doing the soundtrack.
- 32:51Lovely film. How would you describe this one?
- 32:53What happens? Me, I'll I'll go for this.
- 32:59Yeah, go on. It's a whimsical film about two
- 33:04sisters again, two children. Their mother is ill.
- 33:10They've just moved into a new house and to cope with them
- 33:14being alone all the same, I think they've imagined all of
- 33:18these these like forest gods and spirits like a cup boss and a
- 33:24big fox thing and already. I'm like, this is this is wild.
- 33:32Are we going to have a fight? You think they imagine them?
- 33:36Yeah. Teeny, what would you say this?
- 33:41Film's about well, I swear to God, if you tell me to talk all
- 33:45his animal, his spirit friends aren't real.
- 33:47I'm leaving. I think they are as as you say
- 33:52I. Think they're spirits so yeah,
- 33:54they're real in in that world yeah.
- 33:55I don't think the kids are imagining them, though.
- 33:58I think they are because they're.
- 33:59The only ones I can see them. Yeah.
- 34:02But maybe that's to do with the fact that.
- 34:04They're open hearted and joyful and you're a cynical old man.
- 34:07What? What are you trying to say
- 34:08about? Nanny, you do not think her
- 34:09heart's open. It's a bit, she says.
- 34:12They're real. She says that she used to see
- 34:14them as a as a girl, She says they're real Chris mass
- 34:18hysteria. There's something in.
- 34:19The water. They've been drinking the water.
- 34:24Down down the stream from the first film.
- 34:28Oh God, that black. Rain, the black rain.
- 34:32So this is also this is would be set in the 1950s.
- 34:37Originally, was supposed to be set in.
- 34:38The 1950s and then apparently they didn't do enough research
- 34:40so they ended up making it a kind of more generic time
- 34:43period. But it is lovely and it is, I
- 34:47think. I think so it's based heavily on
- 34:50like Shinto folk belief, the idea that everything that has a
- 34:57life, like everything that has a life force has a camie, a spirit
- 35:02attached to it. So every forest that you go to,
- 35:05different trees that you go to. And Toto Totoro is the forest
- 35:10king. He's often described as by the
- 35:12production team. And so he's the camie of the
- 35:16forest that protects this particular woodland.
- 35:19And it's you can tell it's Shinto belief because at one
- 35:22point the children see see Totoro and then the father
- 35:27brings them back to like say hello to the to the cami and to
- 35:34thank him for his presence. And you see the tree wrapped in
- 35:39rope and prayer paper and. That's how you know it's a.
- 35:45Shinto, Shinto belief system. I think they're real.
- 35:50I think the fact that you think those kids are imagining things
- 35:53just says like how cynical you are.
- 35:56I think it's even. Dark of engrave the fireflies.
- 35:59That's coping mechanism for being left on their own so long.
- 36:03Luckily nothing this is. Darker than grey with the
- 36:06fireflies, the royal ghosts. It's actually.
- 36:13We've actually. Been watching the 6th Sense and
- 36:19spoilers for the 6th Sense. Yes, fair enough, fair enough.
- 36:27Yes, the mum's. The mum's in hot.
- 36:28Spelling on this one. Your dad's working.
- 36:32He's a professor. At a.
- 36:33University I watched this. I watched this with my sib and
- 36:39their boyfriend and we were all like, is it just answer is the
- 36:42dad a hottie? Like he's a professor at a
- 36:45university. He like engages with his
- 36:48children in a really charming way and he's kind of a hottie.
- 36:52We decided he was a bisexual hottie.
- 36:54I don't know where the bisexual thing came from.
- 36:56I think that was just to level the playing field for all who
- 36:58might first up. His wife's going to be foreman
- 37:00when? She finds out.
- 37:03She's. In hospital, she'll never know.
- 37:11Children's fell sorry to do, you were.
- 37:13Saying when you watch this. I just found it weird that.
- 37:19Like the neighbor just declared. Themselves as.
- 37:23Granny. Yeah, but then.
- 37:25I do remember. Back it went back when I was a
- 37:27kid was like old people that lived in the street and you used
- 37:30to call them like aunties and. Stuff, Yeah.
- 37:33Just my St. No, I'll get that.
- 37:35It's your mum's. Friend.
- 37:36So she's Yanky kind of thing. Yeah, Yeah.
- 37:41Oh, she's your. Free.
- 37:42Babysitter, I see you're calling on me.
- 37:45Yeah, she's going to. What else Better?
- 37:46To do. She's not going to watch telly
- 37:48because it's set in the weird time before telly, so me as well
- 37:54might as. Well, yeah, do you know?
- 37:59Yeah. Soph also said the same thing.
- 38:02They they found Granny sinister and I was like.
- 38:08Yeah. But you know how you get like
- 38:10aunties? Like when someone's like your
- 38:13auntie? Not that.
- 38:15Quick session. They.
- 38:17Introduced themselves and then. It was a psycho first meeting.
- 38:21You can. Call a granny if you like.
- 38:23No thanks. No, I don't even know.
- 38:27Her actual name. I would like to know her real
- 38:30name first. Fair.
- 38:37What did you think of this film? How did you find it and how did
- 38:40you find it in in contrast to? The first.
- 38:45Film that we watched do. You want to go, Chris?
- 38:53Yeah. Can do, I was just.
- 38:54Going to say style it until. One of you does so I couldn't
- 38:58know how they. Know.
- 39:02Yeah, it was the Paul. Opposite, this felt like an
- 39:05actual kids film that you would show a kid and not like as a
- 39:10punishment for not eating the vegetables or whatever.
- 39:13And yeah, it's really bright. The animation is amazing.
- 39:19The music as well. That's that get that's a part of
- 39:22brain worm Alaska in you get in your head and nobody dies.
- 39:30Yeah, there is. Not our work actually.
- 39:34But yeah. Complete.
- 39:35Opposites. I've quite enjoyed it.
- 39:37It was a sorry, yeah. Beloved sub, you dies.
- 39:43Beloved film in the Yeah yeah. What about you 2?
- 39:48How about you 2? I thought.
- 39:49It I thought it. Yeah, I thought it started a bit
- 39:51slow, but maybe that was because the new IT was a double feature
- 39:55and you needed some time to. You know, get yourself fucked.
- 40:00Together after Fireflies. But yeah, it was like it was a
- 40:04good. It was over half an hour I think
- 40:06before anything started really happening, but like the
- 40:09animation and stuff was incredible.
- 40:12Yeah, yeah, again, I watched it on Netflix, so I don't know if
- 40:16it was a restored version or whatever or it was just looked
- 40:20so good. Yeah and.
- 40:24I think I. Think I would happily for.
- 40:28I'm happy for studios to want to remaster films because it is
- 40:32gorgeous. And I think this is what
- 40:34Miyazaki does so well is natural scenery.
- 40:40Like he knows how to make you want to like step into a woods
- 40:43with him because he does it in Princess.
- 40:48He does it in Princess Mononoke as well.
- 40:50Yeah, it's just gorgeous. It is really beautiful and I, I
- 41:03did find Cat Bus sinister. Yeah, I.
- 41:06Thought granny was granny. Was fine, I was very happy to
- 41:09accept Granny as Granny and if she wants to babysit me that
- 41:14fine, don't have a problem with that.
- 41:15She seems she seems a cheerful sort.
- 41:18Cat Bus on the other hand, entirely the creepiest character
- 41:22in this film. Are you sure?
- 41:25Is it not the weird neighbor boy?
- 41:26Oh. The weird neighbor boy.
- 41:30Oh no, he's just shy. He's not seen the children
- 41:35nearby before. No, he goes to school.
- 41:37He's seen. What?
- 41:38He's seen girls before. He has a scabby umbrella.
- 41:41I'm not going to say a word. Why does this?
- 41:45Scabby Umbrella mark him as a weirdo.
- 41:48I don't know and the logic there it's just the whole exchange.
- 41:51Where he doesn't talk to them, he just goes.
- 41:56It's just a bit, I thought he. Was sweet.
- 41:58I thought he was just shy because he's like, hides from
- 42:02the monster. Yeah, because he's hiding his.
- 42:04Intentions. What?
- 42:08So he. Said Do.
- 42:10What do? You think his intentions are?
- 42:13I'm just curious. He actually made the.
- 42:19Cat Bus out of cats. Stitched stitched cats together.
- 42:27I did a he just, he reminded. Us of the nearby Toy Story.
- 42:30That's why I didn't light up. Sid, you should say.
- 42:34Toy Story Did you know that Totoro makes a cameo in Toy
- 42:40Story 3? Because the director is so the
- 42:45Miyazaki based the little girls based it on his own niece,
- 42:51right? And originally there was only
- 42:52going to be 1 little girl. And then he realised very
- 42:55quickly that actually in order to tell the story, it would make
- 42:58more sense for them to be to to have sisters.
- 43:00Because a small child is less likely to wait at a bus stop for
- 43:04their father when they're on their own than if they have an
- 43:08older sibling with them. So he introduced.
- 43:13An older sister character later on in the production, but the
- 43:17littlest girl is based on his own niece, and she is married to
- 43:22the director of Toy Story 3. And you then put Totoro into Toy
- 43:30Story 3 as a cameo. Oh, that's cool.
- 43:33Yeah. Yeah.
- 43:35And who knows, maybe Sid was also based on based on the
- 43:40creepy neighbor boy Kantor. Yeah.
- 43:44What a Kantor. Oh so.
- 43:50Yeah, there we go. Any favorite characters other
- 43:55than? The dad, obviously, because he's
- 43:56a bisexual hottie. I like I like cat boss.
- 44:02And I like the way me was animated as well.
- 44:04She looked like a frog, which sounds like when.
- 44:08You said that. Could you message us in the chat
- 44:11to be like, I like her. She looks like a frog.
- 44:12And I was actually, that's a really good stand, really good
- 44:15description because she kind of like, there's a lot of like,
- 44:18posturing that she does when she's especially when she's
- 44:21concentrating on something. Yeah, I like me.
- 44:25She's my favorite character in it as well.
- 44:27And there's a bit where she's running after her older sister
- 44:31when she the older sister goes to, like, use the the only phone
- 44:35in the village and she just like, doesn't know where they
- 44:38are. And she was just watching her,
- 44:39like, run around the village by herself.
- 44:41And you're like, Oh no. So cute, so smart.
- 44:44I like it when she's. When she's.
- 44:47Following like the. Creature because it's dropping
- 44:49like corn or whatever and she's following it.
- 44:53That's really funny. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:55Yeah. And there's another one where
- 44:57she's like following it, just like mimicking it's it's.
- 44:59And then it looks over its shoulder and realises she's
- 45:01there and disappears. And you're like, Oh yeah, that
- 45:06was cute. What do we think of?
- 45:08So Totoro is obviously an iconic character that has become the
- 45:12mascot of the studio. Go on, Chris, start an online
- 45:16war. What do you think of Toto Totoro
- 45:18as a as a character? I don't know why I don't.
- 45:21Know why Totoro? Because he's he's not the best.
- 45:23He's it's not the best Gibberry film.
- 45:25So why have Totoro as the mascot?
- 45:29It's like, what do you think the best Gibberry?
- 45:32Film is obviously Poco Rosso. Or someone like us.
- 45:38I want to be a pig. Man in a in a plane rather be a
- 45:43pig. Than a fascist, yeah.
- 45:49But I don't think this is targeted towards me, though I
- 45:53can see why it, I enjoyed it. I think it's it's good, but I
- 45:57don't think I'm the target audience.
- 46:01I'm not. In the no, I don't think you
- 46:02are. Either cutie stuff as much not
- 46:07see, I prefer agree of the fireflies over this because more
- 46:11happens. I know bad things happen, but
- 46:15more happens, and this is kind of like a it doesn't feel like a
- 46:20film to me. It feels like a short story
- 46:23because at the end this is like a your mum will get better.
- 46:26The end. There's no.
- 46:29Like, yeah. Yeah, I thought the end was
- 46:31really. Abrupt like Yeah, that's what it
- 46:34doesn't feel like a. Film.
- 46:35And I was just like, it just run out of like, yeah.
- 46:38You don't even see. You don't even see.
- 46:39Them really reunite with their mum, You just see them leave
- 46:42some corn on her windowsill. Yeah, which sounds like an odd
- 46:46choice, but another reason why they are real.
- 46:49Because the adults see the corn there.
- 46:52No So. And now?
- 46:55So if. My wife.
- 46:58Was. Pretty ill in the hospital,
- 47:00having a fever and everything and like she's like, oh, this.
- 47:05This this bit of corn. Just appeared on the windowsill
- 47:08here. It's a bit.
- 47:09And it's his two mum. I'm sure I've just saw our two
- 47:13children in the tree outside in the second story building.
- 47:16You bet. All right.
- 47:17Yeah, yeah. Do you want to lie down a bit?
- 47:19Have some more medicine so you think of my.
- 47:23Hallucination. Yeah, the mass hallucination of
- 47:25the village. Do you know our children?
- 47:28That I've went missing that we don't know about.
- 47:30They must have come here like cat pus.
- 47:32That was it. But are a pet.
- 47:33Just have some more antibiotics. Go to sleep.
- 47:42So you divide, but you think. So you think Grave of the
- 47:44Fireflies is the better film between the two of them?
- 47:47Yeah, so. Let me check.
- 47:49Let me check. This it was recommend Grave of
- 47:52the Fireflies. I'm not saying just.
- 47:54Stop putting words in my. Mouth.
- 47:59I'm just I'm just curious. What you're defining as a better
- 48:02film, so I think. These films aim to make you feel
- 48:08something and I felt more from Grave of the Fireflies even
- 48:12though it was a horrible void of depression.
- 48:15I felt more for The Grave of the Fireflies than My Neighbor
- 48:18Totoro, so I think it's achieved its goal.
- 48:21They're both animated amazingly. They both have really nice parts
- 48:25where to psych the the little girl and Grave of the Fireflies.
- 48:28Oh stay cute and not playing around.
- 48:30You kind of have their moments in My Neighbor Totoro as well.
- 48:36It's just the die. At least it's got an ending.
- 48:41Do you do you think do? You.
- 48:44Think. The my.
- 48:47Neighbor tutorial. Would have benefited from more
- 48:49child death. Like how far?
- 48:52Doesn't it? All I'm saying is a.
- 48:56Ending is better than no ending. Interesting to to.
- 49:03Me. What do you think?
- 49:07If you were going to like. Better film.
- 49:11I agree, I think great with the. Firefly is a better film in that
- 49:14it evokes more emotion ever coming back.
- 49:19No, you're right. Tutorial.
- 49:22Is kind of. I don't.
- 49:25Know it's it gets bored. In places it doesn't move along
- 49:28that well. Like I said, it takes a while to
- 49:30get going. I think the animation is
- 49:34probably better in tutorial, but yeah, as a movie like if.
- 49:41You made live action movies. Of these two movies, I.
- 49:44Think Grave of the Fireflies. Would be like a masterpiece.
- 49:48It's funny you. Should say that because there is
- 49:49a. Live action TV show of Grave of
- 49:51the Fireflies? Sure.
- 49:54Yeah. And like hell am I watching it,
- 49:57because I think it's bad enough when you're seeing it animated.
- 49:59If I saw it with real children, yeah, I think it would just
- 50:03about kill me. I think I'm going to pick this
- 50:07differently now. Is that I don't usually and
- 50:10avoid. Odd things, yeah, but yeah.
- 50:16So thank you for sure. Thank you for.
- 50:18Breaking your exactly just for use just for.
- 50:21I just like a. Payment by this is.
- 50:23Biebs as pics that might. Yeah, it was.
- 50:27I stand by it. I think look, they are two very
- 50:32iconic. Films, right?
- 50:33If you say to someone what's the saddest anime film that they've
- 50:37ever seen and they don't say Grave of the Fireflies, it's
- 50:39because they've never seen the Fireflies.
- 50:42But I stand by it. I think it is.
- 50:45And I think you're right. It is, I think it is, and I
- 50:49think, and I and I agree with right what Molly said the next
- 50:52day. Sometimes it does take a day to
- 50:53like to settle on the soul that it's desperately sad, but it
- 50:59does make you feel something. And there are lots of very
- 51:01clever things in Grave of the Fireflies that they do to make
- 51:06to balance out the sadness. So you have moments where
- 51:09they're playing together or you have like more like light
- 51:11hearted moments between the siblings.
- 51:14And that makes the contrast of the utter like horror that
- 51:19they're going through so much worse.
- 51:22And that's, like, masterful. It's like, well thought out.
- 51:26It has a very strong message. It's the fact that it's based on
- 51:30a true story only deepens the tragedy of it as well.
- 51:36Yeah. Whereas Totoro.
- 51:37Totoro, he's iconic, right? So he's like, it's a beautiful
- 51:41film. But I agree, it's very slow to
- 51:43start and nothing really happens.
- 51:46You're just kind of watching these two little girls basically
- 51:49settle into a new house, which is fine and.
- 51:53I think watching. It, it's a film that you can
- 51:56watch when you're in a really low place and it will lift your
- 51:59spirits. It's like, it does fill you with
- 52:01like a kind of warm fuzziness. And there are a few times I was
- 52:05watching it where I was like, well, there's just, it's just
- 52:07cute, right? But.
- 52:12In terms of like what? Will stay with me.
- 52:15Great with the fireflies to the from the first moment I've seen
- 52:18it to today because I definitely rewatched it.
- 52:26But from the first moment I saw it, I was like, oh, this, I'm
- 52:29going to remember this film. I'm just going to.
- 52:31And there will be moments that I will always remember from it,
- 52:35like when, like the ashes fly out into the Meadow at the end
- 52:40and you see, like, their spirits unite and they're kind of like
- 52:43watching like, what's happened to them.
- 52:47It's like, OK, it's there are just like moments that you just
- 52:50don't stick with you. And I think Totoro, the
- 52:55character design is iconic, but the actual story itself, nothing
- 52:58really sticks with you except for the theme tune.
- 53:03The theme tune has been with me all weekend.
- 53:08And occasionally I will be just. Doing something in the kitchen,
- 53:10I'll be like tah tah, tah, tah tah and I, it's like an alarm,
- 53:17isn't it? Yeah, I thought it.
- 53:19Was like the old Samsung. Alone, a lob.
- 53:23No. Is it that morning rise or?
- 53:25Whatever it was called to this day.
- 53:30If I hear that noise, I get irrationally angry.
- 53:37So yeah, I agree with you. I think it's, I think great for
- 53:40the Fireflies better film. I'm not recommending it to
- 53:44anyone who doesn't really want like doesn't really.
- 53:49I feel I feel bad that you watched it with Molly because
- 53:52you knew what you were signing up for, Chris.
- 53:55Molly didn't. And I feel like that was
- 53:57irresponsible of you as her partner to let that happen.
- 54:03It's one of the things, but it's like.
- 54:05People are like, Oh yeah, 10 out of 10 would never watch again
- 54:09and you, you've got experience at one point.
- 54:11So yeah, yeah, yeah. And I'm.
- 54:13Trying to think of live action films that I've had the same
- 54:15reaction to as Grave of the Fireflies, and there are, I
- 54:20think there are very, very few. And the only one I could think
- 54:23of was a film about the bombing of Hiroshima, which, yeah.
- 54:32It's like there's no. It's all like, really.
- 54:35Harrowing. Harrowing.
- 54:37Yeah. Warfelt.
- 54:39I think it's one of the greatest war films ever made.
- 54:41I'm going to say that. Grave of the Fireflies, hands
- 54:45down. You don't agree?
- 54:48Name of. No, that's a hot tick, yeah.
- 54:53Wow, have you seen Platoon? You've seen 4 metal jackets,
- 55:01have you? Seen police can be fine, I
- 55:06can't. Remember one of them set in a.
- 55:07Walk. Have you seen Ray?
- 55:09Jordan River Quiet, Yeah. I have actually.
- 55:13And you know what I thought of the river?
- 55:15Quiet. Too long.
- 55:19Too long. It's as slow as take my neighbor
- 55:21to Torah. So what I saw that about?
- 55:26The Godfather never finished it. That was bad.
- 55:31The support of this. This is the wedding, no?
- 55:36No, the wedding thing goes on for ages.
- 55:39And Godfather. And the same with them.
- 55:41Dear Hunter. Yeah, some of the scenes.
- 55:45Just go on for too long. I love.
- 55:47The Deer Hunter. That's a great film.
- 55:49That's a Great War film. Does the.
- 55:52Godfather count as a war. Film if he's a soldier.
- 55:59What are war films inherently? Christmassy because I think of
- 56:02films like The Great Escape as well.
- 56:06Oh, I used to watch him. Letters from Iwo Jima around
- 56:11Christmas. Don't know why, I mean there
- 56:16seems to be something in the. Zeitgeist about oh, it's
- 56:19Christmas time. Time to watch.
- 56:20Good night. Good night, Mr. Tom.
- 56:22Or something, That's all. Yeah, exactly.
- 56:26That's that's another one where there's an dead.
- 56:28Child in it as well. Dead child.
- 56:32Dead child dead. Mother all the death.
- 56:34Yeah, that's a sad film as well. Yeah.
- 56:36Very sweet in the end, but very sad getting there.
- 56:39Mr. Tom. I paid myself again.
- 56:42Yeah. What would you use WV watching
- 56:47at? Christmas.
- 56:48Like right now? Boxing Day.
- 56:51On Boxing Day. Yeah, besides us obviously,
- 56:56which I watch every year back the feature.
- 57:04Good shout. That's nice.
- 57:07I. Like it just at the Argonauts?
- 57:11I love a Jason. And the Argonauts at Chrysler I
- 57:14I like I like plasticine models at Christmas because I was just
- 57:18thinking Wallace and Gromit. That's a shame, Armed.
- 57:21Studios. At Christmas time or like what's
- 57:25the Rudolph the Reindeer 1 they did with that's where it's like
- 57:30you see Ray did it see Green Deal.
- 57:32One have you seen? That.
- 57:35I'm not making it up. This thing, this one with
- 57:39reindeer tits, is Vixen the reindeer Because you know,
- 57:42Vixen's one of the reindeer, someone of Santa's reindeer.
- 57:45It's, I think it's called like Rudy or something like it.
- 57:48It's an admin studio, but like a grown up film about Santa's
- 57:55reindeer. And I think you're making stuff
- 57:58up. I'm not.
- 58:00I'm. Not you see she's got she's a
- 58:02reindeer with tits like making it up.
- 58:06It's like Donna or someone. How would you do it at the run
- 58:09of the rain Euro? Trash.
- 58:10Christmas edition. Yeah.
- 58:13Welcome to Santa's workshop. Here's my.
- 58:18Toys. Oh yeah.
- 58:20Oh, he's. Karen's coming.
- 58:23Yeah, actually the snowman is another.
- 58:30One that I would watch at Christmas.
- 58:31I hate the snowman. It's too long.
- 58:33Yeah, too much singing. I prefer I closed, I thought.
- 58:36Something was less, it's less. Than an.
- 58:39Hour, Chris. It's more than it should.
- 58:41Be you prefer the Santa Claus one.
- 58:45Where he's like in his workshop, yeah, when he goes on.
- 58:48No, he goes on holiday. Don't he like after Christmas?
- 58:53The Raymond Briggs one. Yeah, Raymond Briggs.
- 58:57That's what I'm saying, I'd rather watch the one where the 2
- 58:59old. People dying to be honest when
- 59:02the wind. Blows.
- 59:03You wouldn't. No one would rather watch that
- 59:05film. That film is the equivalent of
- 59:07Grave at the Papa's Line. I would like that better.
- 59:09Than the castrati for half an hour or whatever it is.
- 59:14Castrati. He's not castrati.
- 59:16He's a falsetto boy. Yeah, Potato.
- 59:19He's a falsetto boy. Potato, Potato.
- 59:23That. One, yeah.
- 59:25Yeah, no, What's his? Name.
- 59:27Child. What's her name?
- 59:28Chris. False.
- 59:31There we go. Out Jones, the little falsetto
- 59:35child. Khaled Jones.
- 59:39Aled, Alec. Aled.
- 59:41Ush. That's the name.
- 59:49Grave of the Fireflies is the best war film.
- 59:50Aled isn't a name. What other hot takes have I got?
- 59:57Don't talk about, well, politics.
- 59:59Equipment. Well, no, but you have.
- 1:00:01Also said my neighbor tutori is crap so let's.
- 1:00:05Start a fight didn't. See, it was crap.
- 1:00:07I just said it. Wasn't as good as everyone sees
- 1:00:09it is. What would you?
- 1:00:13How was the Jubilee Mass Scotland?
- 1:00:14Chris and so. There's a film that we did a
- 1:00:19while ago called Poco Russell. Well, it's about a pig flying a
- 1:00:24plane and him you'd have the pig.
- 1:00:28I would, I would. Have the pig.
- 1:00:30Yeah, he flies about. You make a cuddly tidy over him.
- 1:00:33He's fun, whimsical. What do you want?
- 1:00:40Either that or the wolf from Princess Mononoke.
- 1:00:42Mononoke. Listen.
- 1:00:45Neither of those are very good. Mascots because neither of them
- 1:00:47are very cute and you need a mascot to be cute I personally
- 1:00:51would choose either the soot sprites because they're in three
- 1:00:53different studio Gibberry films, they're in Castle Laputa Castle
- 1:00:57in the sky, they're in Spirited Away and they're in Totoro or
- 1:01:03the Kodama from Princess Mononoke.
- 1:01:06You know the creepy little things that like, Oh yeah,
- 1:01:10they'd. Make a good mascot.
- 1:01:12The neck Cricky things. Yeah, yeah, the creepy neck
- 1:01:15Cricky. Things.
- 1:01:16Yeah, yeah. I go for that ugly dude.
- 1:01:20Who's inside the Heron and boy in there?
- 1:01:23So I've never seen that. Oh, Pat, is that Robin Parson?
- 1:01:29I'm a person. That's Robert Parson.
- 1:01:30That's Robert Parson doing a truly unhingedly good job in
- 1:01:37that film in the dub. Like, it's honestly, it's he.
- 1:01:40It's absolutely amazing. You would not know it's him from
- 1:01:43Twilight, but do you not? Think that when?
- 1:01:46When? Jibli gets a voice actor in, you
- 1:01:48get the my exactly like behind them with like.
- 1:01:52Do it like this or I'll cheat. You like wraps them on the back
- 1:01:55or something? I like.
- 1:01:58I think it's just that they can. Afford to get into whoever they
- 1:02:01like, yeah. So they say.
- 1:02:05Pay for the they pay for good talents.
- 1:02:09See, I've only seen them I've. Seen them act in Twilight so.
- 1:02:14Yeah, and he doesn't get. But the lighthouse is another
- 1:02:16good one. Probably not for Christmas.
- 1:02:19He is a he is actually a really good.
- 1:02:21Actor since Twilight, he's come on leaps and bounds, right?
- 1:02:25Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's had a.
- 1:02:27Long and impressive career, but enough about our Pats.
- 1:02:33No, let's talk more. I'm going.
- 1:02:36To wrap us up. Is there anything else you want
- 1:02:38to say on these two films other than I can't believe you made me
- 1:02:41watch these, Phoebe? Yeah, thanks so much for.
- 1:02:47You really Christmas dinner was lovely watching these.
- 1:02:52Through me tears. Well, you've got to.
- 1:02:56Season your food somehow, yeah? I felt great gorging myself on
- 1:03:01Christmas food while watching children stop and.
- 1:03:06Good, good. So you.
- 1:03:08Remember the real meaning of siceless then to me, and that
- 1:03:10guilt. It's live in the capitalist St.
- 1:03:18OK, Well, that's the. Real meaning of Christmas Steep
- 1:03:26fab steep fab. Well.
- 1:03:30Thank you for very much for coming on Anime Club with us.
- 1:03:32To me, I'm sorry I made you watch the world's saddest anime
- 1:03:37film, but I look forward to having you back at another time
- 1:03:41to hopefully if you'll come back to discuss something a lot more
- 1:03:44fun. That would be great, yeah.
- 1:03:50And. Thank you, as always, Chris, for
- 1:03:52a wonderful year of anime. Yeah, I think this is it.

- 1:03:59So in the meantime, hug a loved one.
