- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, Hurdler's Emily a body here checking in with another
- 0:04Speaker 1: installment of Hurdle Moment from Hurdle, a podcast that talk
- 0:08Speaker 1: to everyone from entrepreneurs to top CEOs and athletes about
- 0:12Speaker 1: how they've gotten through tough times hurdles of sorts by
- 0:15Speaker 1: leaning in to wellness. God, I just feel like there
- 0:19Speaker 1: isn't enough time to do all the things I want
- 0:22Speaker 1: to do lately.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Can I get a name? Man?
- 0:26Speaker 1: This week, I am going to be talking about the
- 0:29Speaker 1: things we want to let go of going into the
- 0:32Speaker 1: new year.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I can't take all of the credit for this subject.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I went to a really awesome event of sorts I
- 0:41Speaker 1: guess you could call it last week here in New
- 0:43Speaker 1: York City, and that was called Medi Club. I will
- 0:46Speaker 1: link to Medi Club in the details to this episode. Basically,
- 0:51Speaker 1: what Medi Club is is a bunch of New Yorker
- 0:54Speaker 1: getting together not just to meditate, but to communicate, to
- 0:58Speaker 1: open up, to understand that it's.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Okay to be vulnerable in front of other people.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And there's just no better way to describe the once
- 1:07Speaker 1: monthly meeting than special. At Medi Club, every month, someone
- 1:12Speaker 1: gives what they call a share, and this month the
- 1:15Speaker 1: share ended with a prompt posed to the attendees, which
- 1:20Speaker 1: was what do you want to leave behind or maybe
- 1:23Speaker 1: walk away from in twenty twenty. Now. It's so funny
- 1:27Speaker 1: because I thought to myself, if this was two years ago,
- 1:29Speaker 1: in twenty seventeen, I would have given you someone's name
- 1:33Speaker 1: right like an ex boyfriend. But this year I did
- 1:37Speaker 1: a lot more soul searching and I felt as though
- 1:40Speaker 1: the answer that I came up with was satisfying, and
- 1:44Speaker 1: I'm excited.
- 1:45Speaker 2: To share it with you. Guys.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I just want to throw a note in here. The
- 1:48Speaker 1: holidays can be stressful and chaotic. Work is winding down
- 1:52Speaker 1: for the year. You're probably trying to do everything at once.
- 1:55Speaker 1: If you're anything like me and tackle what feels like everest,
- 2:00Speaker 1: I want you to know that you're not alone, that
- 2:03Speaker 1: we're all feeling a little bit stressed. I know I
- 2:05Speaker 1: certainly am, and that we're going to make it through.
- 2:08Speaker 1: The light is at the end of the tunnel. And
- 2:11Speaker 1: if the new year December thirty first, January first is
- 2:14Speaker 1: good for anything, as you know, it's the perfect time
- 2:18Speaker 1: to start fresh, So no need to.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Wait until jan one to jump start change.
- 2:25Speaker 1: To feel inspired right now is just as good, So
- 2:29Speaker 1: take a deep breath, let it out. I remember that
- 2:35Speaker 1: we've got this at Emily Body at Hurdle podcast.
- 2:39Speaker 2: And with that, let's get to hurdling. What do I
- 2:55Speaker 2: want to let go of in twenty twenty?
- 2:58Speaker 1: Like I said, it would be a lot easier just
- 3:01Speaker 1: to say I want this person out of my life,
- 3:03Speaker 1: or maybe something aesthetic like I want to lose a
- 3:06Speaker 1: certain amount of weight.
- 3:07Speaker 2: But you know me, my goals are a little bit
- 3:10Speaker 2: more self development friendly.
- 3:13Speaker 1: And so while I was sitting there inside of Escape
- 3:17Speaker 1: where they held the med Club event, I was thinking
- 3:20Speaker 1: about the things that make.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Me frustrated, and what I realized was.
- 3:25Speaker 1: That one of the biggest things that I felt held
- 3:28Speaker 1: me back in twenty nineteen was self doubt. Right, we
- 3:32Speaker 1: go through these periods where we set goals and we
- 3:35Speaker 1: strive for them, and sometimes and aiming for these big,
- 3:39Speaker 1: lofty ideas, we get scared and intimidated and almost second
- 3:44Speaker 1: guess what we are capable of. The reality is And
- 3:47Speaker 1: what I've seen this year is when I shoved self
- 3:50Speaker 1: doubt to the side, I was truly able to reach
- 3:54Speaker 1: for my full potential now. Of course, first and foremost
- 3:57Speaker 1: a great example of this is with my t for Chicago.
- 4:02Speaker 2: When I ran the.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Chicago Marathon this year, I was including more speedwork than
- 4:07Speaker 1: ever in my routine. I was hitting paces that I
- 4:10Speaker 1: had never hit before. And that's because I stopped believing
- 4:13Speaker 1: that I was just this one type of runner. I
- 4:17Speaker 1: stopped believing that I was only capable of running as
- 4:22Speaker 1: fast as possible at an eight minute mile, for example.
- 4:26Speaker 1: When I stopped doubting myself, when I allowed myself to
- 4:31Speaker 1: reach for more, that is when I accomplished more, and
- 4:35Speaker 1: it was this really beautiful unlock for the things that
- 4:39Speaker 1: I wanted outside of running as well. Think about your relationships,
- 4:43Speaker 1: maybe even with dating, when you stop doubting what you
- 4:47Speaker 1: have to offer, what you have to bring to the table,
- 4:49Speaker 1: when you open yourself up and be authentic to who
- 4:52Speaker 1: it is that you really are. Oftentimes when we're busy
- 4:55Speaker 1: wondering am I good enough? Am I successful enough? Am
- 4:59Speaker 1: I pretty enough? Is my body okay? Not even a
- 5:02Speaker 1: question we should be asking ourselves. Right When we have
- 5:05Speaker 1: these thoughts and allow in that negativity, it doesn't exactly
- 5:09Speaker 1: set you up to find promising, uplifting relationships. What I
- 5:15Speaker 1: will say about my last serious relationship back in twenty
- 5:18Speaker 1: seventeen was that when I met this person, I was
- 5:22Speaker 1: going through a time that I was feeling really empowered.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I was really just getting my feet under me when
- 5:27Speaker 1: it came to my freelance writing business. I remember showing
- 5:31Speaker 1: up to that first date and my photo was in
- 5:34Speaker 1: a magazine spread, and I was super amped about that.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I was just not necessarily looking for anything. I was
- 5:41Speaker 1: in a really good place with who I was. And
- 5:44Speaker 1: so many times when I've sat down on a date,
- 5:47Speaker 1: whether it was that date or another date, I come
- 5:49Speaker 1: to the table with this understanding that I really want
- 5:52Speaker 1: to be the best version of myself, and that in relationships,
- 5:56Speaker 1: I want to meet someone who also feels that same way.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I don't want it to be a fifty to fifty
- 6:00Speaker 1: split where I need that person to be a better me.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I want to be good.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I want them to be good and together, well, then
- 6:07Speaker 1: maybe we have the opportunity to level up. Anyway, I
- 6:10Speaker 1: feel like I'm getting a little bit rambly. Basically, the
- 6:13Speaker 1: point of this discussion, the point of all of this nonsense,
- 6:17Speaker 1: the point of these words, is that in twenty twenty,
- 6:21Speaker 1: I want to let go of this self doubt. I
- 6:23Speaker 1: want to truly believe and I mean that with so
- 6:27Speaker 1: much of my heart that I am capable and I
- 6:31Speaker 1: am worthy. Now, I know it's not something that just
- 6:34Speaker 1: happens overnight, but it can happen with the power of
- 6:39Speaker 1: writing things down, saying things out loud, positive affirmations. Every
- 6:44Speaker 1: day before I walk out of my apartment, I'm staring
- 6:46Speaker 1: at them right now. I look at these two post
- 6:49Speaker 1: its on the door. One of them says you can,
- 6:51Speaker 1: you will to good. The second one says you are kind,
- 6:55Speaker 1: you are capable, you are worthy, You've got this and
- 6:59Speaker 1: so so when you start to say these things to yourself,
- 7:02Speaker 1: when you truly do the work to believe that you
- 7:06Speaker 1: have a lot to offer, that's when we have the
- 7:10Speaker 1: opportunity to let go of that self doubt. Now, one
- 7:14Speaker 1: other thing I definitely want to leave behind in twenty
- 7:18Speaker 1: nineteen is I want to let go of this idea
- 7:22Speaker 1: that I feel like I have to do it all now.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Kind of like Therpie in a way, I feel as
- 7:27Speaker 1: though I have to do it all sometimes because maybe
- 7:29Speaker 1: I don't have the means to find someone else to help.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Me do it.
- 7:32Speaker 1: But the reality with that statement is that if I
- 7:37Speaker 1: feel as though I don't have the means that just
- 7:39Speaker 1: might be because I'm not prioritizing it or I'm not
- 7:41Speaker 1: solution oriented. So I want to let go of feeling
- 7:45Speaker 1: like I have to do it all. I feel like
- 7:47Speaker 1: this is something that whenever I have dinner with a girlfriend,
- 7:50Speaker 1: we totally commiserate on.
- 7:52Speaker 2: You don't want to feel weak, you want to feel capable.
- 7:56Speaker 2: You want to feel like you've got this right, and
- 7:59Speaker 2: I can totally sympathize. The reality is is that sometimes
- 8:04Speaker 2: you have to say no. Sometimes you have to think of.
- 8:07Speaker 1: What your big goals are, what your values are, and
- 8:10Speaker 1: when opportunities or situations arise that make you feel like
- 8:14Speaker 1: you need to say yes, take a step back and
- 8:18Speaker 1: ask yourself, where does this align with what it is
- 8:21Speaker 1: that I want?
- 8:23Speaker 2: Where does this align with my ultimate goals. It can be.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Something as simple as someone asking you if you want
- 8:29Speaker 1: to grab a drink after work when you know that
- 8:31Speaker 1: you have laundry and errands and work and god knows
- 8:35Speaker 1: what else to do before your head. It's the pillow.
- 8:38Speaker 1: If you grab a drink with this person, then you
- 8:40Speaker 1: probably won't be going to bed until maybe eleven thirty
- 8:42Speaker 1: when it's all said and done, and then you have
- 8:45Speaker 1: an early morning to the next day. Your day is
- 8:47Speaker 1: going to start off on the wrong foot because you're overtired.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I mean, one thing just waterfalls into the next, and
- 8:53Speaker 1: before you know it, you're asking yourself, why did I
- 8:55Speaker 1: say yes in the first place. So let me be
- 8:59Speaker 1: the person tell you it's okay to say no. It's
- 9:02Speaker 1: okay not to do it all instead of doing everything.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Sometimes it's just so much better. And this is a
- 9:10Speaker 1: lesson that I am learning to.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Focus on a few things, to give a few things
- 9:15Speaker 2: your full undivided attention, and most importantly, not get down
- 9:21Speaker 2: on yourself for needing to dial it back. It is okay.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Sometimes in these instances where I feel like my world
- 9:28Speaker 1: is crumbling around me, I look at myself in the
- 9:31Speaker 1: mirror and I just remind myself that I am doing
- 9:34Speaker 1: the best I can with what I have, and that
- 9:38Speaker 1: is enough.
- 9:39Speaker 2: So this is what I want from you.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I want you to ask yourself, what is it that
- 9:43Speaker 1: you want to like go of going into twenty twenty?
- 9:46Speaker 1: What is it that you want to leave behind this year.
- 9:51Speaker 1: It's a really, you know, thought provoking question because I
- 9:53Speaker 1: think so often what we do is we ask ourselves
- 9:57Speaker 1: what is it that we want to go for what
- 9:58Speaker 1: is it that we want to obtain?
- 10:00Speaker 2: But it's okay to let go. It feels really good
- 10:04Speaker 2: to shed, and so shud away. Write it down.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Tag me on Instagram, send me a DM. Let me
- 10:11Speaker 1: know what it is that you are trying to break
- 10:13Speaker 1: free from and understand that it might not be something
- 10:17Speaker 1: that happens right away or overnight, but putting it into
- 10:21Speaker 1: the universe, writing that one or two or maybe three
- 10:24Speaker 1: things down, it's the first step towards something good. And
- 10:28Speaker 1: that's it for now. Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys
- 10:33Speaker 1: next time.
