- 0:12Speaker 1: This is the Weed of Time spoilers poodcast.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Do we want to talk about things that matter to
- 0:24Speaker 2: people who care about Wheel of Time?
- 0:26Speaker 1: Yeah, let's talk about apples first, right, because apples first.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, Apple was first, first, Sin first, smartphone Apple first.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I swear to god, he was reading like an alphabet
- 0:37Speaker 1: and was like, hey, it is for apples that comes first,
- 0:40Speaker 1: let's do that.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Where was he at in his parenthood journey.
- 0:43Speaker 1: At Yeah, I think he had some Well, I'm Sanderson
- 0:47Speaker 1: has enough kids that I'm pretty sure he's always had
- 0:49Speaker 1: small children in his house.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Fair enough.
- 0:51Speaker 1: They may be growing up now, but certainly in the
- 0:53Speaker 1: beginning of his career, like, yeah, he was, he was
- 0:55Speaker 1: for sure surrounded by small children at this point. So yeah,
- 0:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with the apples first.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Inspired by his three year old.
- 1:03Speaker 1: By three year old and and him read it reading, uh,
- 1:06Speaker 1: the ABC's to the kids.
- 1:08Speaker 2: But I mean, I don't hate it because it is
- 1:10Speaker 2: a callback to a book one character, So like, totally
- 1:13Speaker 2: a is for Book one works for me.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and Almond Blunt and yeah, I mean there's just
- 1:18Speaker 1: there's a lot going on here, and it's it's one
- 1:20Speaker 1: of those cool moments where you're man. Yeah, Almond Sorry,
- 1:24Speaker 1: I always call him Almond blunt, even though I know
- 1:26Speaker 1: it's bunt. I just put that l on there for
- 1:29Speaker 1: some reason.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Remember, he's a bunt cake, not a stoner.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Well, you know, I thought you'd be making the bong
- 1:33Speaker 1: out of the apples, right, Like, that's the whole point.
- 1:36Speaker 1: That's why they're growing them the apple pipes, right, that's
- 1:40Speaker 1: really they're all disappointed because they can't smoke out of
- 1:43Speaker 1: the apples.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Oh no, these are just little little what do they
- 1:47Speaker 2: call them, chillums, the little like one hit wonder things.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Yep, that's all.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that's all they're gonna be able to make this year.
- 1:54Speaker 2: It's terrible, just.
- 1:57Speaker 1: The little tiny pipes. But yeah, this this, this was
- 2:00Speaker 1: a great moment for me. Like this, this really felt
- 2:03Speaker 1: like what is God Rand going to be like? Right,
- 2:07Speaker 1: this is something that we've been waiting to see. It's
- 2:09Speaker 1: he's finally enlightened. We finally have the leader we need
- 2:13Speaker 1: going into the last battle. You know, we have this
- 2:15Speaker 1: chance and this is the moment where we get to
- 2:17Speaker 1: see that.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the clouds literally part to let through
- 2:20Speaker 2: the light of Rand is back. Baby, We're gonna go.
- 2:24Speaker 2: We're gonna do this thing. We're gonna scoop up our
- 2:27Speaker 2: book one characters, and we are gonna win this fucking
- 2:29Speaker 2: last battle.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And then but in the meantime, we're gonna hang out
- 2:33Speaker 1: with Paren for a long time doing absolutely nothing.
- 2:36Speaker 2: We're just gonna inch as slowly as possible towards the
- 2:39Speaker 2: most obvious conclusion in the entire world.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Right, Oh, you know, I really didn't. I was like,
- 2:48Speaker 1: you know, Paren's slog is super long, but once we
- 2:51Speaker 1: get through the first three books, No, he's got a
- 2:52Speaker 1: hold of this slog that happens in this book.
- 2:55Speaker 2: It's just Malden. It's just Fayelle's fault. No, it's not
- 2:58Speaker 2: just Faylle's fault.
- 2:59Speaker 1: No, this rehashing the whole Barre Laine Fayeel fucking thing
- 3:04Speaker 1: all over again. Like it's just like I'm done with it.
- 3:08Speaker 2: All right, do the paragraph?
- 3:11Speaker 1: So excited for them? I always love the paragraph.
- 3:13Speaker 2: And there's a long there's so much seon chan lore
- 3:16Speaker 2: in this paragraph. Like I wouldn't mind if you just
- 3:18Speaker 2: went and went and went, like there's a lot of
- 3:21Speaker 2: good stuff to talk about. Like it's literally like every
- 3:25Speaker 2: other paragraph is like I got shit to comment on
- 3:27Speaker 2: for like a while.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Should I just read up until smoke seemed drives from
- 3:31Speaker 1: the entire continent of sean Chan. That's like two pages in.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's long, but like it's good. I think
- 3:39Speaker 2: it's good. If anyone doesn't like it, well skip ahead
- 3:41Speaker 2: two minutes, try.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Six editing radio. Let us know how long it's gonna be.
- 3:49Speaker 2: We'll do, we'll do here they are three minutes.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Apple's first and our symbol is the dragon. The wheel
- 3:58Speaker 1: of time turns, and ages come and pass, leaving memories
- 4:03Speaker 1: that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth
- 4:07Speaker 1: is long forgotten when the age that gave it birth
- 4:10Speaker 1: comes again in one age, called the Third Age by some,
- 4:14Speaker 1: an age yet to come, an age long past. A
- 4:18Speaker 1: wind rose above the misty peaks of Imprahrel. The wind
- 4:23Speaker 1: was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings
- 4:26Speaker 1: to the turning of the wheel of time. But it
- 4:29Speaker 1: was a beginning. Crisp and light, the wind danced across
- 4:34Speaker 1: fields of new mountain grass, stiff with frost that frost
- 4:39Speaker 1: lingered past first light, sheltered by the omnipresent clouds that
- 4:43Speaker 1: hung like a death mask high above It had been
- 4:46Speaker 1: weeks since those clouds had budged, and the wan yellowed
- 4:50Speaker 1: grass showed it. The wind churned morning mist, moving southward,
- 4:54Speaker 1: chilling a small pride of torm. They reclined on a
- 4:57Speaker 1: flat like in stained granite shelf, waiting to bask in
- 5:01Speaker 1: morning sunlight that would not arrive. The wind poured over
- 5:05Speaker 1: the shelf, racing down a hillside of scraggly mirror trees
- 5:09Speaker 1: with ropelike bark and green tufts of thick, needlelike leaves
- 5:13Speaker 1: atop them. At the base of the foothills, the wind
- 5:16Speaker 1: turned eastward, passing an open plain kept free of trees
- 5:19Speaker 1: and scrub by the soldier's axe. The killing fields surrounded
- 5:23Speaker 1: thirteen fortresses, tall and cut entirely from unpolished black marble,
- 5:29Speaker 1: their blocks left rough hewn to give them a primal
- 5:32Speaker 1: feeling of unformed strength. These were towers meant for war
- 5:36Speaker 1: by tradition. They were unoccupied. How long would that last?
- 5:41Speaker 1: How long tradition itself would be remembered? And a continent
- 5:44Speaker 1: in chaos remained to be seen. The wind continued eastward,
- 5:49Speaker 1: and soon it was playing with the masts of half
- 5:51Speaker 1: burned ships at the docks of takus rahm out into
- 5:56Speaker 1: the sleeping bay. It passed the attackers enormous great ships,
- 5:59Speaker 1: would sails painted blood red. They sailed southward, their grizzly
- 6:04Speaker 1: work done. The wind blew on to land again, past
- 6:07Speaker 1: smoldering towns and villages, Open plains filled with troops and
- 6:11Speaker 1: docks fat with warships. Smoke, warhalls and banners flew above
- 6:16Speaker 1: dying grass and beneath the dock master's Gloomy sky men
- 6:21Speaker 1: did not whisper that this might be the end of times.
- 6:24Speaker 1: They yelled it. The fields of peace were aflame, the
- 6:27Speaker 1: tower of Ravens was broken, as prophesied, and a murderer
- 6:31Speaker 1: openly ruled in Shandar. This was a time to lift
- 6:35Speaker 1: one's sword and choose a side, then spill blood to
- 6:38Speaker 1: give a final color to the dying land. The wind
- 6:41Speaker 1: howled eastward over the famed Emerald Cliffs and coursed out
- 6:45Speaker 1: over the ocean behind. Smoke seemed to rise from the
- 6:49Speaker 1: entire continent of Sean Chan.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Good read, thank you.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Sometimes the long narrator voices are the hardest ones to read,
- 6:59Speaker 1: because if you have a character voice, you can get
- 7:01Speaker 1: into the character voice, you know, but the narrator. You
- 7:04Speaker 1: want to you want to emphasize the right things, and yeah,
- 7:06Speaker 1: I find the the long, long narrator things the hardest
- 7:13Speaker 1: to sort of keep interesting and vary up as you
- 7:16Speaker 1: read them.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good reading though, Like there's a lot
- 7:20Speaker 2: of stuff in it to talk about. So you know,
- 7:24Speaker 2: you carried through. You did a good job even though
- 7:26Speaker 2: it was long. Thank you. All right, So stuff to
- 7:29Speaker 2: talk about here. Obviously, the Towers of Midnight, yes we
- 7:33Speaker 2: don't get the name, but this is the Towers or
- 7:36Speaker 2: the Towers of the Ravens are the the same thing.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I assume this is the Towers of Midnight because of
- 7:40Speaker 2: the whole unoccupied thing. Ors I think the Tower of
- 7:42Speaker 2: the Ravens is occupied.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I believe that's correct. And it's also the guide, right,
- 7:48Speaker 1: So this is the world of Robert Jordan's Wheel of
- 7:52Speaker 1: Time aka the Big Bad Book of Bad Art does describe.
- 7:57Speaker 2: That's the big kind name.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Yeah, but if you open it up, you really the
- 8:02Speaker 1: art's bad, right, Like it's not. It's not one of
- 8:04Speaker 1: those things where you can be like, oh, it's just
- 8:06Speaker 1: you know, some of this art isn't the best.
- 8:08Speaker 2: And in fairness, the art is unfinished.
- 8:12Speaker 1: The art is unfinished. Yes, so it's.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Bad because it's literally not done yet, and unfinished art
- 8:17Speaker 2: does look like that.
- 8:19Speaker 1: We can lay that an Eyewat or Red Eagle Entertainment,
- 8:22Speaker 1: whatever you want to call them. They've changed their name
- 8:23Speaker 1: several times. They did pull out midway through their commitment
- 8:27Speaker 1: of the book, which caused it to be published unfinished.
- 8:30Speaker 2: So you're pulling from that that this is the Towers
- 8:34Speaker 2: have been Night. We know that.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I am referencing what encyclopedia that says that. The guide
- 8:38Speaker 1: says that they are the Towers have been Night. Okay, okay,
- 8:42Speaker 1: the Wikipedia says it.
- 8:44Speaker 2: As everyone knows, Wikipedia is infallible.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Which is because I did not realize these were the
- 8:50Speaker 1: Towers have been Night up until just today, right. I
- 8:53Speaker 1: always thought that it was you know, the Black Tower,
- 8:56Speaker 1: the White Tower, maybe you know one of the I've asked,
- 9:01Speaker 1: I think in previous episodes, like what are the Towers
- 9:03Speaker 1: of Midnight, and people have been like, oh, maybe it's
- 9:05Speaker 1: the tower in Shondar, But then I thought it was
- 9:07Speaker 1: the Raven Tower, not these Towers of Midnight. Yeah.
- 9:11Speaker 2: This gives me almost like a like an abandoned Towers
- 9:14Speaker 2: of Malk heir kind of energy.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Yeah. I actually had to read this a couple of
- 9:18Speaker 1: times and be like, wait, is the wind blowing through Malchier?
- 9:20Speaker 1: But I thought that was seven towers.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's it's there's something really eerie and prophetic
- 9:27Speaker 2: and going. Something's going on with these in a way
- 9:30Speaker 2: that reminds me of malk Here, And I do think
- 9:33Speaker 2: they there is a prophecy mentioning them somewhere somehow.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Doing a quickly search. Of course, it's very hard to
- 9:42Speaker 1: find the prophecy Towers of Midnight because everything you google
- 9:47Speaker 1: just brings you right to the book.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I found it. I found it in the back
- 9:50Speaker 2: of in the glossary of this book. Nice thirteen fortresses
- 9:54Speaker 2: of unpolished black marble located in Inferol, Seanchan. At the
- 9:58Speaker 2: time of the Consolidation of sean Chan, it was the
- 10:01Speaker 2: center of military might. The final battle of the Consolidation
- 10:04Speaker 2: took place there, leaving hawk Wing's descendants in power. Since
- 10:08Speaker 2: that time, it has been unoccupied. Legend says that in
- 10:11Speaker 2: time of dire needs, the Imperial family will return to
- 10:14Speaker 2: the Towers of Midnight and right that which is wrong.
- 10:17Speaker 2: See also Consolidation. So nothing about a prophecy, but you know.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and the fact that there are thirteen of them,
- 10:23Speaker 1: like you could be like, oh, those are the forsaken, right,
- 10:26Speaker 1: you got these thirteen black towers of evil that are falling.
- 10:31Speaker 1: You know, I don't know's it's, in my opinion, one
- 10:34Speaker 1: of the poorest title choices, like at least the other
- 10:37Speaker 1: ones have. Like on the Heights, you know.
- 10:40Speaker 2: The paths are paved with daggers, paths.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Are paved with daggers, you know, a knife of dreams
- 10:44Speaker 1: again this form of prophecy, But Towers of Midnight.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Here at the end of the book, there's a shadow
- 10:50Speaker 2: prophecy with the line, yeah, the broken Wolf, the one
- 10:55Speaker 2: whom death has known, shall fall and be consumed by
- 10:58Speaker 2: the Midnight Towers. So that's in a dark prophecy at
- 11:01Speaker 2: the end of the book. But uh, it's a really
- 11:04Speaker 2: cool set of words. To have such an understated, backstage
- 11:09Speaker 2: footnotey kind of meeting would be nice to have it
- 11:12Speaker 2: be a little more flamboyantly front and center, because it's
- 11:15Speaker 2: a cool set of words, Towers of Midnight.
- 11:17Speaker 1: And also then like, how is he consumed by the
- 11:20Speaker 1: Towers of Midnight?
- 11:20Speaker 2: I don't understand, well, all the dark prophecies don't come
- 11:24Speaker 2: true because reasons. So, you know, I'm not sure. It
- 11:29Speaker 2: didn't seem like he was in any kind of serious
- 11:31Speaker 2: conflict with the Sean Chan. But oh I like that
- 11:35Speaker 2: idea athlon that they would have been relevant to the Outriggers,
- 11:39Speaker 2: like a big part, big forward. Oh yeah, this was
- 11:42Speaker 2: a tiny detail in the main series, but now it's
- 11:44Speaker 2: a huge deal for the Outrigger. Yeah. Yeah, that would
- 11:48Speaker 2: make a lot of sense because it's a really cool
- 11:50Speaker 2: visual ed phrase.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Yeah really, sorry, I'm just doing some research and I'm
- 11:55Speaker 1: not finding anything.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Okay, well that's fine.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Sorry about that. You know, so nothing on the nothing
- 12:01Speaker 1: on the Towers of Midnight.
- 12:03Speaker 2: We'll figure it out or we won't. It's fine.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Basically, the wind comes to Dragon Mount.
- 12:08Speaker 2: It makes what would be called trade winds at another age. Okay,
- 12:12Speaker 2: science boys showing off that you took a meteorology one
- 12:14Speaker 2: oh one, congrats.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I bet I bet the original phrase. I bet he
- 12:19Speaker 1: wrote trade winds. And the editor was like, they didn't
- 12:22Speaker 1: have trade wins back then. He's like, fine in another age, which.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Like true, they don't have trade wins yet. They haven't
- 12:27Speaker 2: figured out sailing across the ocean because the Shawn Chas
- 12:30Speaker 2: sort of preclude that, but yeah, I totally agree, that's
- 12:33Speaker 2: totally what happened. He's like trade wins. They're like the
- 12:36Speaker 2: winds to be known as trade winds, like formerly end
- 12:40Speaker 2: in future known as trade wins. And then yeah, it
- 12:43Speaker 2: gets to the continent and Peter's out until it is
- 12:46Speaker 2: but a wispy little breeze as it curls around Dragonmount
- 12:49Speaker 2: where zen Rand is going to enter the stage. Well, first,
- 12:55Speaker 2: all in Bunch first, All in Blunt first, are awesome
- 12:59Speaker 2: cranky old apple farmer cart driver from the road trip
- 13:03Speaker 2: from Hell Time Travel Adventure.
- 13:06Speaker 1: And the thing is he's not an apple farmer, right right, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 13:11Speaker 1: he's like, this is my brother in law's.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Yes, his sister's farm.
- 13:15Speaker 1: His sister's farm, right and so, and his brother in
- 13:17Speaker 1: law died, so he's there to help out.
- 13:18Speaker 2: But like normally in a bubble of evil mind you yes, yes,
- 13:23Speaker 2: burn into a tree shaped thing of sulfur.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Rich stuff, and he's having to decide between helping his
- 13:29Speaker 1: sons versus helping his sister because like his sons were
- 13:32Speaker 1: robbed of all their food.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Because he left his sons behind to take care of
- 13:35Speaker 2: his farm while he went to help his sister, and yeah,
- 13:38Speaker 2: now everything's fucked.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Not everything's fucked because because the food fails. Right, once
- 13:43Speaker 1: the food fails, it's like, what do you do here?
- 13:46Speaker 1: You know, what's there? Three meals away from chaos?
- 13:49Speaker 2: Nine I think nine nine missed meals away.
- 13:52Speaker 1: From three days worth of meals.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly exactly, because you can handle a day
- 13:57Speaker 2: without like totally losing civic control. But once you've gone
- 13:59Speaker 2: through three days and your children are like really freaking out,
- 14:02Speaker 2: like things get messy, and it's been a lot more
- 14:06Speaker 2: than three days at this point. In these books, we
- 14:09Speaker 2: often talk about how fast it is, but if you're
- 14:10Speaker 2: talking about the speed at which civil order and infrastructure
- 14:14Speaker 2: breaks down, it's been a long time since the inciting
- 14:17Speaker 2: incidents for some of these people.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Well, and I do think that, like the food spoilage
- 14:21Speaker 1: is increasing, right, there didn't there's not. I think in
- 14:25Speaker 1: the beginning it.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Was like the great of change.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and so now all of a sudden it went
- 14:29Speaker 1: from like half the food spoiling, like all the food spoiling,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and so they've become desperate in the last few days,
- 14:35Speaker 1: which is you know, basically a recruiting tool for the
- 14:36Speaker 1: side of the light, but.
- 14:37Speaker 2: I mean the darks also treats it as a recruiting tool,
- 14:40Speaker 2: like desperate people will do desperate things. But like it
- 14:43Speaker 2: seems to really work in favor of the Light if
- 14:45Speaker 2: you just have anyone that's remotely competent and also Parent
- 14:49Speaker 2: has the tavere and halo effect that makes his food
- 14:52Speaker 2: go bad a lot slower. So that also really readly helps.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Because that seems to be like what our heroes are
- 14:59Speaker 1: able to do, right, They are preventing the dark ones
- 15:02Speaker 1: touch somehow, whether that's their connection to Rand and now
- 15:06Speaker 1: that he is of the light, but even but okay,
- 15:09Speaker 1: so here's the thing. When we get the Parent section,
- 15:12Speaker 1: that's back in time quite a bit before Rand has
- 15:15Speaker 1: an epiphany, but Paren is still able to protect the
- 15:17Speaker 1: food from being spoiled.
- 15:19Speaker 2: I think it has to do with the fact that
- 15:21Speaker 2: because they're tied to the pattern, reality is a little
- 15:24Speaker 2: more solid where they are. They're like a anchor point almost,
- 15:29Speaker 2: and so as reality is unraveling and breaking the rules,
- 15:33Speaker 2: the rules are just less able to break around these
- 15:36Speaker 2: people on whom the pattern hinges like it's going to
- 15:38Speaker 2: be the last place to break down. That's kind of
- 15:40Speaker 2: how I hit canon, and that's true regardless of where
- 15:44Speaker 2: Rand's at in his epiphany status. That's just like inherent
- 15:47Speaker 2: to who they are as Taveran. I think that's just
- 15:50Speaker 2: my head canon. It's very you know, navel gaysy and meta.
- 15:53Speaker 1: But which kind of balances out the bubbles of evil
- 15:56Speaker 1: seeking out the tavern and breaking the pattern around them.
- 15:58Speaker 2: And we do like balance in our FMO headcare.
- 16:02Speaker 1: So yeah, we get the story about how the man
- 16:06Speaker 1: who died right he turned the corner and turned into
- 16:08Speaker 1: an evil tree that smelled of sulfur and then they
- 16:11Speaker 1: cut it down.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Yeah, and that was his brother in law. So now
- 16:14Speaker 2: he's up trying to take care of the orchard. But
- 16:17Speaker 2: now he's standing there with his two nephews looking at
- 16:20Speaker 2: a bunch of you know, barely started fruit that has
- 16:23Speaker 2: all dropped to the ground.
- 16:24Speaker 1: At once it started, laid, it grew slow, but at
- 16:28Speaker 1: least it was fruit, and then all of a sudden
- 16:30Speaker 1: rotted and died.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Then dropped to the ground. Just all of it so
- 16:35Speaker 2: wildly unnatural, like someone just hit a key command in
- 16:38Speaker 2: a video game. Like it's entire and the kids are
- 16:42Speaker 2: pretty freaked, and he's trying to be chill and cool
- 16:44Speaker 2: about it. But there's not a lot of ways to
- 16:46Speaker 2: be chill and cool about your orchard. Just like controls
- 16:49Speaker 2: the failing on itself.
- 16:51Speaker 1: And this isn't like a person's orchard. This is like
- 16:54Speaker 1: a region's orchard. This is like the Google of orchards, right,
- 16:57Speaker 1: Like this is like we produce more apples that distributed
- 17:01Speaker 1: them the more places.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Yeah, this is an apple producing region. This is an
- 17:05Speaker 2: economy supporting thing. This is a not truly a bread basket,
- 17:09Speaker 2: but a fruit basket sort of thing. Is a Yeah,
- 17:11Speaker 2: it's a really big deal. It's not just four or
- 17:13Speaker 2: five trees in the backyard.
- 17:15Speaker 1: In the way that like wool and to back are
- 17:17Speaker 1: the industries of the two rivers. This place produces apples.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Yeah, right exactly. Yeah, this is their product agriculturally, and
- 17:26Speaker 2: this is one of the biggest farms in the region.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Like this is it's a big deal.
- 17:31Speaker 1: And he's like all in blonds, putting up a good face.
- 17:33Speaker 1: He's like, oh, you know, I've had worse Aviaviada. But
- 17:36Speaker 1: he's like, yeah, I've had worse, but at least the
- 17:38Speaker 1: food wasn't going rotten, right, Like, right, I don't know
- 17:42Speaker 1: what to do like at this point he is really
- 17:44Speaker 1: just totally freaking out and trying to hide it from
- 17:47Speaker 1: the younger guys.
- 17:49Speaker 2: A little bit of a callback to the very first
- 17:52Speaker 2: prologue of the Sanderson books. Right, here's how an old
- 17:55Speaker 2: farmer responds to the world falling apart, and how he
- 17:59Speaker 2: right tells his younger generations like how to deal with
- 18:04Speaker 2: the situation and reflecting on how in all his years
- 18:07Speaker 2: he's never seen anything like this, right, Like, we saw
- 18:09Speaker 2: it with a random character at the beginning of the
- 18:12Speaker 2: last book. Now we're seeing it with a character and
- 18:14Speaker 2: we know, albeit not since the first book, but still
- 18:17Speaker 2: it's iterating this is what it's like to just be
- 18:20Speaker 2: a random person trying to exist in this world.
- 18:24Speaker 1: And I do like the way he's able to bring
- 18:25Speaker 1: in that he makes this character instead of just some
- 18:27Speaker 1: random farmer someone we've encountered before, although I do think
- 18:30Speaker 1: it is stretched a little bit to make that lundering
- 18:32Speaker 1: merchant suddenly an apple farmer. I'm like, okay, that he was.
- 18:36Speaker 2: A farmer before. He wasn't a merchant. He was just
- 18:38Speaker 2: like running his farm products to town.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Oh that's right, that's right, My bad.
- 18:44Speaker 2: How dare you?
- 18:45Speaker 1: How dare I how how dare I besmirch the name
- 18:48Speaker 1: of the man? Well, and this is the guy like
- 18:51Speaker 1: if we go back right I the world he was
- 18:54Speaker 1: the one who gave him a scarf, which means he
- 18:56Speaker 1: appeared in a couple of different the flashbacks got all
- 18:59Speaker 1: weird and so like he's the guy who you think, oh,
- 19:02Speaker 1: are there two of them giving him a scarf? And
- 19:04Speaker 1: is like no, we just see that scene twice.
- 19:06Speaker 2: It was foreshadowing that he would come back in book thirteen.
- 19:09Speaker 1: That's really what it was all about. It's like, yeah,
- 19:11Speaker 1: he's gonna totally I like that idea, the.
- 19:16Speaker 2: One that you keep seeing multiple times, and also the
- 19:19Speaker 2: one that gave them a thing, not just a ride,
- 19:21Speaker 2: but the scarves, Like he gets to come back. He
- 19:24Speaker 2: earned the right to get to come back in Last
- 19:26Speaker 2: Battle times.
- 19:27Speaker 1: And didn't he also identify them as like being hunted
- 19:30Speaker 1: and like didn't say anything about it and helped him out, Like.
- 19:33Speaker 2: He offered to let them come out to his farm.
- 19:35Speaker 1: That's right and high.
- 19:37Speaker 2: It's like if I don't know what you're running from,
- 19:39Speaker 2: but if you need a place to hide, you can
- 19:41Speaker 2: come to my farm. And Matt was all daggrimatted out
- 19:44Speaker 2: and ran away, right, and he was like, fine, you're right.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I shouldn't have offered here have some scarves anyway, My
- 19:52Speaker 2: house is over there if you change your mind. Fucking weirdos.
- 19:56Speaker 1: So yeah, I really like the way this comes together
- 19:58Speaker 1: for him, and it's just like, yeah, he's a good dude.
- 20:00Speaker 1: He's a good dude, and it's obviously trying to do
- 20:04Speaker 1: the best for all the people in his employee and
- 20:06Speaker 1: then his brother's employ and just like, yeah, I respect him,
- 20:10Speaker 1: I like him. He's a good character.
- 20:12Speaker 2: More of these calls backs, more of this back is
- 20:15Speaker 2: what we really really wanted. This is exactly the kind
- 20:18Speaker 2: of this is the whole full circle nature of the
- 20:21Speaker 2: series kind of thing, because.
- 20:23Speaker 1: So often you and I are like, oh man, we
- 20:25Speaker 1: just why is he introducing all these characters to never
- 20:28Speaker 1: use them again? And this is a great like this
- 20:30Speaker 1: is what the characters should be used for. It's like,
- 20:32Speaker 1: what have they been doing? Let's bring back all those
- 20:35Speaker 1: characters from the initial book from the initial series.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they have a backstory. We know their backstory
- 20:41Speaker 2: because it was book one, Like, we don't need the
- 20:44Speaker 2: backstory in the notes, like.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And they and they continue to live after that, you know,
- 20:48Speaker 1: all these characters exist in the world, and like some
- 20:51Speaker 1: of my favorite things is like when Pater comes back
- 20:54Speaker 1: as the kid, the evil kid, or when what's his
- 20:57Speaker 1: name gets his forehead stomped on and he shows up later.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Uh yeah, So I just I like it when there's
- 21:08Speaker 1: there's full circleness, and you know, I know some people
- 21:11Speaker 1: are like, well, but you know, the world's a big place,
- 21:14Speaker 1: and I think it makes sense to have someone who
- 21:16Speaker 1: like appears and then disappears and you never see them again,
- 21:18Speaker 1: because that's kind of how life works. But like, you
- 21:21Speaker 1: know what, this isn't there.
- 21:22Speaker 2: It's a book. Yeah, give me fantasy. So he kind
- 21:41Speaker 2: of gives up. He thinks to himself, you know, kind
- 21:43Speaker 2: of in an echo of what Rand has been going
- 21:46Speaker 2: through up on the mountain in the preceding hours, is like, well,
- 21:50Speaker 2: there it is. The fight's been lost. We've lost, we
- 21:53Speaker 2: have nothing left. What can I possibly do? Maybe it's
- 21:57Speaker 2: time to like join my wife in the afterlife, Like
- 21:59Speaker 2: this is this is it. I'm giving up and might
- 22:01Speaker 2: as well just die. And then that is a perfect
- 22:05Speaker 2: echo of the land as one with the dragon, and
- 22:08Speaker 2: the farmers are one with the land. So the farmers
- 22:10Speaker 2: are one with a dragon too, and as he gives up,
- 22:14Speaker 2: a beam of sunlight reaches him and zen Rand comes
- 22:17Speaker 2: floating in on a chorus of angels.
- 22:22Speaker 1: It is a little bit like that, though, isn't it.
- 22:24Speaker 1: It's just like, oh, yeah, he's just gonna go ahead.
- 22:26Speaker 2: You can see it in that classic Mormon art style.
- 22:29Speaker 3: You know.
- 22:31Speaker 2: It's really like renaissance through a Mormon, flowing silken robes,
- 22:38Speaker 2: long flowing hair.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Isn't there also, like God came down from the mountain
- 22:42Speaker 1: and present it, Like, isn't that a whole thing in
- 22:44Speaker 1: religion is like coming down.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Only a dozen hundred times. Yeah, yeah, God's coming out
- 22:51Speaker 2: of clouds and deities and prophets and like divine beings
- 22:59Speaker 2: coming out of clouds is a thing. It's just a thing.
- 23:02Speaker 2: They descend from mountaintops bearing tablets of wisdom, they throw
- 23:06Speaker 2: lightning bolts, like it's just mountains and clouds and the
- 23:10Speaker 2: divine are a whole thing.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Oh the mountaintop sermon Jesus had the Booji is saying, yeah, I.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Mean that was a slightly lower elevation so that way
- 23:18Speaker 2: more people could get to the amphitheater than you know.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Well, everything was at a lower elevation than Dragon Mount
- 23:25Speaker 1: Jesus Christ, it's above the clouds.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Well, I'm just saying Moses went up on a mountain
- 23:29Speaker 2: to talk to some aliens that had to pick him
- 23:30Speaker 2: up from a sufficiently high elevation that the tractor beam
- 23:33Speaker 2: wouldn't you know, also get a bear or whatever. Yeah,
- 23:36Speaker 2: also Mufasa, I mean to lean on our nineties cannon, right.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Like Moufasa who's head again?
- 23:47Speaker 2: But yeah, it's clouds and the divine is a thing.
- 23:50Speaker 2: But I just you know, it's just the way that
- 23:52Speaker 2: like a sunbeam comes down and then zen rand comes down.
- 23:55Speaker 2: I'm just like I can see the Mormon magazine illustration
- 24:00Speaker 2: very clearly.
- 24:03Speaker 1: But like at what point, like grand is so clearly Jesus, right,
- 24:07Speaker 1: Like I get that this there's the very Mormons Jesus,
- 24:11Speaker 1: but he's Jesus is part of what he is, right,
- 24:14Speaker 1: and his story and the telling. It's not just Sanderson
- 24:18Speaker 1: coming in being like I'm Mormon, therefore I'm going to
- 24:22Speaker 1: invent this thing.
- 24:23Speaker 2: No, I'm just saying the visuals of it are like
- 24:25Speaker 2: those flowy Renaissance paintings that the Mormon illustrators are apic.
- 24:29Speaker 2: I'm just saying I can see the billowing silk billowing
- 24:35Speaker 2: no reason, just excess billowing silk everywhere. Like that's all
- 24:38Speaker 2: I'm saying.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Well, that's the wind, right. We spend pages describing the
- 24:42Speaker 1: wind totally.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Local, it's totally yes, yes, I have no problems with it.
- 24:49Speaker 2: I'm just like, we're really, we really are using a
- 24:52Speaker 2: Mormon illustrator to make sure we all get the Jesus
- 24:55Speaker 2: imagery real clear. Which is fine, It's fine.
- 24:58Speaker 1: All right, Jesus move on.
- 25:01Speaker 2: No, he's going to really just like favor this moment
- 25:04Speaker 2: and live in the now because that's who he is now.
- 25:08Speaker 2: I'm not lost finally, right, He's he's really living in
- 25:11Speaker 2: the present moment.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Oh yeah, No, this is this is him being like,
- 25:15Speaker 1: oh I've had enlightenment, right, this is enlightened Rand. He
- 25:20Speaker 1: understands the point of life now, you know, and he
- 25:24Speaker 1: still has some He's not perfect, right, And I think
- 25:26Speaker 1: that's a good part of his enlightenment is him realizing, like,
- 25:29Speaker 1: you know, and especially later on, he has to let
- 25:32Speaker 1: go of his list, like he still hasn't let go
- 25:34Speaker 1: of the list, which I think is ridiculous.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Oh yeah, because he's he's human, He's an enlightened human.
- 25:40Speaker 2: He's not pure enlightenment. He has not entered Nirvana and
- 25:44Speaker 2: stayed there. Right, He briefly touched Nirvana and has come
- 25:47Speaker 2: back into a dynamic, embodied, suffering human experience which involves
- 25:54Speaker 2: tears and mistakes and anguish and all that stuff.
- 25:58Speaker 1: But I think a big what I really like about
- 26:01Speaker 1: this because I do really like the scene, right, like
- 26:03Speaker 1: as much as I'm sort of criticizing you, like, it's
- 26:04Speaker 1: a great scene. And I think the difference is when
- 26:07Speaker 1: Rand cleansed the source, there was no moment where he
- 26:10Speaker 1: got to come down and be like I have done
- 26:12Speaker 1: it to everyone and went ooh. But now he's going
- 26:16Speaker 1: around basically going from ally to ally being like, yo,
- 26:20Speaker 1: I'm cool, and everyone be like, whoa, you are cool? Yeah,
- 26:24Speaker 1: And I think that that's such a profound difference in
- 26:28Speaker 1: terms of the catharsis, like we got to see the
- 26:31Speaker 1: moment on the mountain and now we're seeing the after effects.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, very much so. And I also love what
- 26:37Speaker 2: he says about like to learn but not be overwhelmed.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Is the balance, Like just coming right out of the
- 26:43Speaker 2: gate with Rand gets balanced. Now all of these lessons
- 26:46Speaker 2: that people have been begging for him to learn like.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Is the balance? Yeah, he has balance. I think that's
- 26:52Speaker 1: the real key here, is like, oh yeah, he's balanced.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Finally he's not like quendy are getting harder exactly real time,
- 27:00Speaker 1: Like the point of real time is the balance, right,
- 27:03Speaker 1: Like that is the everything from the ancient symbol of
- 27:06Speaker 1: the eye sid die to evil versus good to like
- 27:10Speaker 1: the way the pattern enforces balance. And he's finally come
- 27:14Speaker 1: to that realization, which makes him one with the pattern
- 27:18Speaker 1: in a way that he hasn't been.
- 27:20Speaker 2: He's graduated to another set of lessons, that's for sure.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely Yeah.
- 27:25Speaker 2: And then almond Bunt himself is looking at Rand, calling
- 27:29Speaker 2: him lad one minute and then man the next, like
- 27:32Speaker 2: in his head like Rand looks so young, but he
- 27:36Speaker 2: is so old. And you can see almond Bunt like
- 27:39Speaker 2: going from huh, there's something odd about this lad. Wow,
- 27:41Speaker 2: there is something about this man, this man right right,
- 27:45Speaker 2: the maturity that Rand has acquired very visible to an
- 27:48Speaker 2: outsider who doesn't know him.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Right, even though he's you know, physically young right.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Like right exactly, he's literally twenty three.
- 27:58Speaker 1: No, no, see, this is the thing that always throws me.
- 28:00Speaker 1: He was eighteen when he left the two Rivers.
- 28:02Speaker 2: So he's like twenty one at this point.
- 28:04Speaker 1: He's like twenty twenty one now, yeah, God, so young.
- 28:07Speaker 1: A GWayne was sixteen, he was eighteen when they left
- 28:11Speaker 1: the Two Rivers and it's been just over two years.
- 28:13Speaker 1: So depending on when birthdays are and all that kind
- 28:15Speaker 1: of stuff, he's twenty twenty.
- 28:16Speaker 2: One, a very old twenty one.
- 28:18Speaker 1: This is like the world leader who can't like necessarily
- 28:21Speaker 1: order a drink at a bar, right, like right right,
- 28:25Speaker 1: he would get id That's all I'm saying.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and then you.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Look in his eyes and go, oh ancient.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Yeah, four hundred never mind, you're four hundred.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Yeah. Memories, So that's that's I think where the contradiction
- 28:37Speaker 1: comes from. Right, It's like physically he is, you know, twenty,
- 28:40Speaker 1: but mentally he has the memories and the age and
- 28:43Speaker 1: the wisdom of a four hundred year old.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and then yeah, Rand says, pick the apples now,
- 28:50Speaker 2: because if you if you pick them, that puts a
- 28:52Speaker 2: permanent save on them, and they'll be good until you
- 28:55Speaker 2: eat them. He somehow knows that in some metaphysical way
- 28:58Speaker 2: that like if you harvest them while I'm here, they
- 29:01Speaker 2: will stay good. They won't go bad even when I leave.
- 29:04Speaker 1: It's like he can lock in that protection if they're picked.
- 29:07Speaker 1: It's like, while they're growing, they're still vulnerable, but once
- 29:11Speaker 1: they're picked, they're no longer connected to the dark one
- 29:14Speaker 1: and they're insulated and he can like freeze them with
- 29:16Speaker 1: his goodness or something like that. There is like what
- 29:19Speaker 1: is he doing? Like is he making the apples grow?
- 29:21Speaker 1: Is this a bubble of good? Right? We've had the
- 29:23Speaker 1: bubbles of evil?
- 29:25Speaker 2: I mean I think so, right, because the apples just
- 29:26Speaker 2: had a bubble of evil hit them, So like the
- 29:29Speaker 2: pattern would allow for Rand to bubble of good back
- 29:31Speaker 2: at them.
- 29:32Speaker 1: You know what this kind of reminds me of you
- 29:34Speaker 1: ever watch Doctor Who? Yeah, so this is the moment
- 29:36Speaker 1: where he's a new doctor, eleventh doctor I think, and
- 29:40Speaker 1: he gets his hand cut off and like in that moment,
- 29:42Speaker 1: it regrows because he's still doing his regeneration right, and
- 29:46Speaker 1: it's like, whoa, that's really cool And that's kind of
- 29:48Speaker 1: what it reminds me of Rand, Like he's still kind
- 29:51Speaker 1: of in the middle of his epiphany. Yeah, and so
- 29:53Speaker 1: there was this like bubble of evil that created all
- 29:56Speaker 1: this bad stuff and he's like, nope, uno reverse this
- 30:00Speaker 1: In the bubble of good because I'm in my epiphany moments,
- 30:02Speaker 1: I can just like reverse the bubble of evil and
- 30:05Speaker 1: make it a bubble look good and grow those apples
- 30:09Speaker 1: right back, right.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Yeah, he like has that attribute until his next short
- 30:12Speaker 2: rest and.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Exactly and.
- 30:17Speaker 2: It's still basically is in effect when he goes to Tarvalin, right,
- 30:20Speaker 2: like all the tea and wine and everything gets good
- 30:22Speaker 2: like while he's there, and then it gets bad again
- 30:25Speaker 2: once he leaves.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Like yeah, I mean that's just his like normal aura
- 30:29Speaker 1: presence that's affecting his ability to like, yeah this.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Was that's true. That does stay with him for the
- 30:34Speaker 2: rest of the rest of the time.
- 30:36Speaker 1: But the growing of the apples not necessarily being good.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Being good is something he gets for the rest of
- 30:41Speaker 1: the time.
- 30:42Speaker 2: And locking in the goodness and locking.
- 30:44Speaker 1: In the goodness. Yeah, well I think that's because they
- 30:46Speaker 1: were grown.
- 30:47Speaker 2: But I guess he doesn't go to any other farms. Yeah,
- 30:49Speaker 2: maybe he was singing the growing, So maybe he came
- 30:52Speaker 2: down the mountain like singing mm hmmm, like just like
- 30:54Speaker 2: a walking song, right, because we know that the song
- 30:57Speaker 2: is more about vibes than about lyrics, and like he
- 31:00Speaker 2: was just doing like a two rivers walking song, like
- 31:04Speaker 2: revisiting his roots and being like, ah, yeah, sweep for
- 31:07Speaker 2: a minute, and like suddenly noticed the apples were growing
- 31:10Speaker 2: and was like, oh shit, I'm gonna make someone's day,
- 31:14Speaker 2: and then just walk through the orchard.
- 31:16Speaker 1: I think he's literally, yeah, I don't think this was
- 31:19Speaker 1: the song of growing, right, I don't think that that's
- 31:21Speaker 1: something he was using in this situation. Like it is
- 31:24Speaker 1: something he uses later to grow those trees in the tent, right,
- 31:27Speaker 1: Like he's totally using it at that point, and the
- 31:29Speaker 1: peaches and the peaches, but maybe I don't know. I
- 31:33Speaker 1: feel like they grew too fast.
- 31:35Speaker 2: No, that's what happens in the peach scene is he
- 31:37Speaker 2: makes them go through this exact cycle. He literally repeats
- 31:40Speaker 2: this performance but with the peaches in a private courtyard,
- 31:43Speaker 2: and that works as an omen for the shan chan ah.
- 31:46Speaker 1: I forgot that.
- 31:46Speaker 2: So he might very well be using his epiphany vibes
- 31:51Speaker 2: to discover how to do the song of growing on
- 31:54Speaker 2: those apple orchard well.
- 31:55Speaker 1: And again he doesn't need to, like he remembers the
- 31:57Speaker 1: song of growing now.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Maybe he's maybe it is just the lyrics, Maybe he
- 32:01Speaker 2: doesn't the lyrics, but yeah, I mean I think maybe
- 32:04Speaker 2: Ran did that because he does do we know he
- 32:06Speaker 2: does it to the peaches, Yeah know that, So he
- 32:11Speaker 2: might be doing it for the first time here I
- 32:13Speaker 2: could see that. Or maybe it's just epipennie vibes. I
- 32:16Speaker 2: mean either way, we don't know. It's off screen either way.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Right right, we don't have an idea of like, oh,
- 32:22Speaker 1: did he do something to cause them to grow? Or
- 32:25Speaker 1: was that just a side effect of like Rand's goodness
- 32:27Speaker 1: and wholesomeness and coming down off the mountain and being
- 32:31Speaker 1: near his presence and he's one with the land and
- 32:33Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Well lfe Blanded flu brings up a good point that
- 32:36Speaker 2: the tea and all of that is pattern balancing, but
- 32:39Speaker 2: peaches and apples are growing, all right. The song is
- 32:43Speaker 2: for growing. Maybe maybe there's something to that.
- 32:48Speaker 1: I mean, yes, the song is for growing, but like
- 32:52Speaker 1: that's still balancing, right, Like, because the dark one is destroying,
- 32:56Speaker 1: growing is balancing the destruction.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Maybe it's both. Maybe he used the song of growing. Wow,
- 33:02Speaker 2: he had epiphany vibes and that's why it's so excellent.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean a combination of things, right, and this
- 33:08Speaker 1: is leading towards him being able to light the pipe, right,
- 33:11Speaker 1: he's able to do things without necessarily embracing the power.
- 33:14Speaker 1: He's affecting the pattern. He's affecting the way the world
- 33:17Speaker 1: is working, and this is one example of it. And
- 33:20Speaker 1: that's going I think maybe foreshadowing for him fighting the
- 33:23Speaker 1: Dark One.
- 33:24Speaker 2: I mean, he's starting to get some real creator esque powers,
- 33:27Speaker 2: which makes him seem maybe leveled up to being able
- 33:30Speaker 2: to deal with all caps Dark One.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Right, right, because he's doing things finally, he's affecting reality
- 33:36Speaker 1: without using the One power or the true power.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Now maybe he's using the power of the singing,
- 33:44Speaker 1: but I think he's just using the power of teverin
- 33:47Speaker 1: the power of balancing the pattern. Right, that's really what
- 33:51Speaker 1: he is. He's the balance to the Dark One. And
- 33:53Speaker 1: before when he was you know, Darth Rand, he wasn't
- 33:56Speaker 1: balancing the Dark One at all, and so the Dark
- 33:58Speaker 1: One was just winning. Things were getting just worse and
- 34:00Speaker 1: worse and worse. He was balanced in the beginning, and
- 34:02Speaker 1: then he became Dark Rand and then all the Taban
- 34:04Speaker 1: events around him were bad. There were no none of
- 34:07Speaker 1: the good events. And now he's just creating good events.
- 34:10Speaker 1: And the more the Dark One gets free, the more
- 34:12Speaker 1: powerful he becomes because you know, on two sides of scale,
- 34:16Speaker 1: if you put more weight on the other side, you
- 34:18Speaker 1: end up with you know, for some reason, I think
- 34:20Speaker 1: of v eqles ir right, like rand is the voltage
- 34:24Speaker 1: and the dark one is current and you have to
- 34:28Speaker 1: balance them out. And yeah, I don't know.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I like the idea that he used the song
- 34:36Speaker 2: on these apples. I don't really I.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Just like it. I'm gonna head canon it. Yeah. I
- 34:42Speaker 1: like the head cannon that that's how we grew them.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it gives me better vibes and.
- 34:48Speaker 1: That he's kind of doing the whole like he's good,
- 34:52Speaker 1: but he's also a little bit of a charlatan. Sometimes
- 34:55Speaker 1: he has his little tricks to make make himself like
- 34:58Speaker 1: feel more powerful than he is. We see him use
- 35:00Speaker 1: that with the Sean Chan.
- 35:02Speaker 2: I mean is that being a Is that a trick?
- 35:05Speaker 2: Or is that just using your knowledge that they don't have?
- 35:10Speaker 1: Yeah? I mean both both. Yeah, I mean you know
- 35:13Speaker 1: that's isn't that what magic is? Is just like knowing
- 35:16Speaker 1: something the audience doesn't. That is most magic, yes, or
- 35:20Speaker 1: at least illusions.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and not all magic is illusion.
- 35:24Speaker 1: They're not tricks, Michael. They're illusions.
- 35:27Speaker 2: I would call illusions tricks for sure. That's kind of
- 35:29Speaker 2: the whole point. But whatever, that's just me. I like
- 35:34Speaker 2: getting into semantic arguments anyway, Almond Bunt remembers who Rand is,
- 35:40Speaker 2: just in case anyone in the audience wasn't quite picking
- 35:42Speaker 2: that up because they hadn't done rereads umpteen times between
- 35:45Speaker 2: that book and this book. You know, maybe you only
- 35:48Speaker 2: read it once and you need to be reminded.
- 35:50Speaker 1: I honestly think though, when he says do I know you,
- 35:53Speaker 1: he's like literally referring to like, are you the dragon Reborn?
- 35:57Speaker 2: Well, also that, but it does it does say remembering
- 36:01Speaker 2: an odd pair of youths he had given a lift
- 36:04Speaker 2: too in his cart years ago. He does literally say that,
- 36:06Speaker 2: so the audience at least knows that this is in
- 36:09Speaker 2: fact that.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Guy, right right.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Rand's like, I mean, yeah, probably, you know, men are
- 36:15Speaker 2: often speaking of me just walked away like what a
- 36:18Speaker 2: celebrity move.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Well, and that's why I think he's like, you, Yes,
- 36:23Speaker 1: people are often talking to me because I'm the dragon reborn,
- 36:25Speaker 1: Like that's Rand at least thinks that's where he recognizes
- 36:28Speaker 1: him from. I don't know if Rand realizes this is
- 36:30Speaker 1: the same.
- 36:31Speaker 2: No, Rand doesn't know no, no, no, no, Rand has no
- 36:34Speaker 2: idea he's met this man before. Only okay, audience are
- 36:37Speaker 2: sure of that. I think almond BoNT is unsure Rand
- 36:41Speaker 2: is clueless.
- 36:42Speaker 1: I guess okay, that makes sense. That's because I thought
- 36:44Speaker 1: Rand remembered him as well.
- 36:46Speaker 2: I don't think so, at least not in this scene.
- 36:49Speaker 1: So like, dude, Rand, come on, that's kind of shitty,
- 36:51Speaker 1: Like you're supposed to be the good celebrity who remembers
- 36:53Speaker 1: people and is like, oh yeah, bro, you get me
- 36:55Speaker 1: a scarf?
- 36:56Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 36:57Speaker 3: Right?
- 36:57Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 36:58Speaker 2: What really would have been nice? If Rand has said
- 37:00Speaker 2: probably people are often speaking of wait, a scarf, like
- 37:05Speaker 2: that's how that should or.
- 37:07Speaker 1: If you like left the scarf for him, right, like
- 37:09Speaker 1: return the scarf.
- 37:10Speaker 2: I think that would Well, this isn't your scarf, but
- 37:13Speaker 2: I hope that it replaces the one that you gave me,
- 37:16Speaker 2: kind of like how he was.
- 37:17Speaker 1: With the sword exactly.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that would have been awesome.
- 37:22Speaker 1: Like I wasn't able to give you. I can give
- 37:24Speaker 1: you back what you gave me in my moment of need.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Right in es Sex's humble scarf. But it means the world. Yeah,
- 37:32Speaker 2: it was Rand who was sick in his cart, I think.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Yeah, because Rand had it was channeling sickness.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Yeah, Matt was blinded from the lightning that Rand channeled.
- 37:45Speaker 1: Yes, But then Rand was the one having weird dreams
- 37:48Speaker 1: and visions where he wasn't sure what time it was
- 37:51Speaker 1: or who he you know. That's where we get the
- 37:53Speaker 1: repeated vision where we see Almond Blunt twice because Rand
- 37:55Speaker 1: is like confused about reality. He's like, wait, what the fuck?
- 37:58Speaker 1: Where am I? Who am I? What am I doing?
- 38:00Speaker 1: What time is it?
- 38:01Speaker 2: Matt was holding it together barely despite the degger in
- 38:04Speaker 2: the blindedness, because Rand needed him.
- 38:06Speaker 1: But he was very suspicious on this walk the whole time.
- 38:09Speaker 2: Yeah, which is probably whyt B doesn't remember Rand is
- 38:14Speaker 2: because he's paid way more attention to Matt that trip,
- 38:17Speaker 2: because it was the one next to him being weird,
- 38:19Speaker 2: whereas just sleeping in the back and occasionally shouting in nightmares.
- 38:23Speaker 1: Well, he did know he was sick, right, and he
- 38:26Speaker 1: was taking care of him because he was sick, and
- 38:28Speaker 1: and he knew they were in trouble too. That's the
- 38:30Speaker 1: other reason, Like, right.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Yeah, because he was laughing at the innkeeper who was
- 38:34Speaker 2: talking to the mergerll and He's like, you're a dumb
- 38:36Speaker 2: ass for talking to Merderrall the other guy's like, well,
- 38:39Speaker 2: you're a dumb ass for driving at night. And that
- 38:41Speaker 2: was when Rand was like, we should talk to him.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Yeah, totally, totally.
- 38:45Speaker 2: If I'm recalling all that correctly, it was the road
- 38:47Speaker 2: trip from Hell. I might be confusing some of the instances.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Some of my favorite scenes. I really do that that
- 38:53Speaker 1: trip with Matt and Rand just made me fall in
- 38:56Speaker 1: love with the books, I think in the beginning.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Yeah, and all these years later, I still can't keep
- 39:00Speaker 2: trek of exactly which farmer did which part of the
- 39:03Speaker 2: road trip. But whatever, No.
- 39:05Speaker 1: It doesn't really matter because the only one that's important
- 39:07Speaker 1: is Aman Blunt. All the other ones are just like, yeah, exactly, Yeah,
- 39:12Speaker 1: gave him little scenes but whatever.
- 39:13Speaker 2: So yeah, Rand walks away more or less saying like
- 39:16Speaker 2: can you's got like a fifty mile radius on his
- 39:18Speaker 2: charm or whatever, so it'll be fine. And Almond Bunt
- 39:21Speaker 2: runs into town or into the house or wherever it
- 39:24Speaker 2: is that people are into the village and is like,
- 39:27Speaker 2: oh my god, we gotta gore at the apples. We
- 39:29Speaker 2: go go at the apples. You guys, you don't understand
- 39:30Speaker 2: I got gore at the Apples and it's a good
- 39:32Speaker 2: end to a chapter.
- 39:34Speaker 1: No, and that's that's where we get the he has
- 39:35Speaker 1: to do the apples first before they go do which
- 39:37Speaker 1: is basically before they go fight in the last battle.
- 39:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Yeah, two things Rand talks about. I have to do
- 39:44Speaker 1: something I've been putting off. I doubt she will be
- 39:46Speaker 1: pleased by what I tell her. I believe that's referencing
- 39:50Speaker 1: talking to a gwayn.
- 39:51Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, definitely. Yeah, that's the next thing he does.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Because they are almond Bunt thinks about how they're on
- 39:55Speaker 2: those slips of Dragon Mountain. They're so close to the
- 39:57Speaker 2: ice of dye, and he doesn't like being that close
- 39:59Speaker 2: to it. So yeah, that Rand is going to walk
- 40:02Speaker 2: from the height of Dragon mount all the way down
- 40:04Speaker 2: to the river bottom where Tarvalin is and talk.
- 40:07Speaker 1: To her again. Very if you if you remember Sanderson
- 40:10Speaker 1: the Walk to Uruthu, where they're walking to the mountain
- 40:14Speaker 1: instead of coming down off of it. But it's a
- 40:15Speaker 1: very similar vibe The Way of Kings. The Way of
- 40:18Speaker 1: Kings in his first book is the book exists inside
- 40:21Speaker 1: the book, right, So his his first book is The
- 40:24Speaker 1: Way of kings. But in the world there is a
- 40:25Speaker 1: book called The Way of Kings where a king describes
- 40:28Speaker 1: his journey walking to the mountain, the Great Mountain, so
- 40:31Speaker 1: very similar vibes there. And then the other thing. There
- 40:35Speaker 1: is a lightness to the air, warped and bent around
- 40:38Speaker 1: the wind, as opposed to the darkness that was around
- 40:41Speaker 1: him before. And so that's that's when I talk about
- 40:43Speaker 1: like I do, I legitimately think he's getting anti bubble
- 40:47Speaker 1: of evil.
- 40:48Speaker 2: Powers totally, totally. He literally is warping the other direction.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Mm hmm. If he has any power, that's that's where
- 40:55Speaker 1: I think the power is coming from. That's different than
- 40:58Speaker 1: the power he.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Had with channeling, definitely.
- 41:03Speaker 1: And then there's this moment where Almond Blunt says, gather everyone,
- 41:07Speaker 1: and you know everyone, and I always think of Leon
- 41:11Speaker 1: the Professional if you're familiar with that movie. There's a
- 41:15Speaker 1: point where Gary Oldman turns and goes, he goes get everyone,
- 41:18Speaker 1: and he goes who you mean everyone? He goes freye
- 41:23Speaker 1: the most intense like yelling, and so that's yeah. So
- 41:27Speaker 1: now now of course Am Blunt is Gary Oldman in
- 41:31Speaker 1: my head because of that line where he turns and
- 41:34Speaker 1: goes everyone.
- 41:35Speaker 2: I have no problem with this casting Aim and Almond
- 41:39Speaker 2: bunt as with Gary Oldman. Yeah, let's do it. Let's
- 41:43Speaker 2: do it.
- 41:44Speaker 1: And let's see, I'm gonna have to drop the gift
- 41:47Speaker 1: and chat Aman Oldman. Nice, light minded fool. So do
- 41:51Speaker 1: we need that?
- 41:53Speaker 2: Yeah? Nice, nice Gary?
- 41:59Speaker 1: All right? So oh that's all I have for that chapter.
- 42:01Speaker 2: I think, yep, I am ready to move on to
- 42:17Speaker 2: chapter two. Questions of leadership with the wolf symbol because
- 42:22Speaker 2: parent time and also a bit of glade, who's basically
- 42:25Speaker 2: just parent time.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely more parent time. Questions of leadership that does
- 42:32Speaker 1: parent want to be a leader? And obviously does Galad
- 42:36Speaker 1: become leader of the White Cloaks?
- 42:38Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Neither of them want it. One of them
- 42:42Speaker 2: accepts it much more gracefully than the other. But it
- 42:45Speaker 2: is a question of who gets to lead. That is
- 42:47Speaker 2: what both armies are kind of dealing. Well, one army
- 42:50Speaker 2: has already made up its mind and the leader stillso
- 42:52Speaker 2: figure it out, whereas Goalad's army literally just decided to
- 42:55Speaker 2: change leaders. So it's a little more acute for them.
- 42:58Speaker 1: And we'll have a correction when we there we were wrong.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll get there.
- 43:03Speaker 1: And I think the other really important thing to realize
- 43:05Speaker 1: is this is a huge step back in time. Right,
- 43:08Speaker 1: It's not obvious. It's really not obvious considering the Rand
- 43:12Speaker 1: thing happens before this in the chapter. But this is
- 43:16Speaker 1: as far as I can tell. Right, There is this
- 43:18Speaker 1: line in the opening paragraph. A few days ago, the
- 43:20Speaker 1: pervasive cloud cover had turned black, darkening, like the advent
- 43:24Speaker 1: of a horrible storm. I assume that happened when Samarag
- 43:29Speaker 1: took off Rand's hand, Darth. That's when the sky, the
- 43:34Speaker 1: cloud cover turned, went from gray to black. And so
- 43:37Speaker 1: I think that's our time stamp. Right, we are a
- 43:40Speaker 1: few days after Rand gets his hand taken off. Okay,
- 43:45Speaker 1: that would be my guess. I haven't confirmed that that's.
- 43:48Speaker 2: The case, but okay, but that makes sense.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Yeah, we're deep in Darth Rand at this point.
- 43:53Speaker 2: Okay. I like that. It's like, let's like, even if
- 43:55Speaker 2: you're wrong about the exact event, like we're rough roughly,
- 43:58Speaker 2: that's about how far back we are. And also he
- 44:01Speaker 2: talks about how it's been a month since they left Malden,
- 44:05Speaker 2: a distance he had planned to cover in a week,
- 44:07Speaker 2: and I feel like that's a little bit of a
- 44:09Speaker 2: nod too. Yeah, so there's some timeline funkiness going on. Yeah,
- 44:15Speaker 2: so just to understand that there's some wrinkles and folds
- 44:19Speaker 2: that we didn't really want but we have.
- 44:21Speaker 1: And so yeah, sinking that up with like, yeah, it's
- 44:23Speaker 1: been a month since he left Malden. Remember, like Faya
- 44:26Speaker 1: was only in Maldon for like a month and a.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Half, right, right, it's been almost as long again since Yeah, totally.
- 44:33Speaker 1: Totally because we had the knots and he had like
- 44:35Speaker 1: fifty knots or something like that, which is like, yeah,
- 44:37Speaker 1: it's not even two months. So yeah, we're in this
- 44:42Speaker 1: one line. We're delaying pretty much as much as the
- 44:45Speaker 1: last three books. There.
- 44:49Speaker 2: It's a lot.
- 44:50Speaker 1: It's a lot. It's a lot. So some time is passing,
- 44:55Speaker 1: and in order to let time pass, we have what
- 44:57Speaker 1: is I consider the weakest bubble of evil. It's really
- 45:00Speaker 1: just here for plotline reasons, which is random red snakes
- 45:04Speaker 1: appeared in camp Bit, a bunch of people. Everybody got sick.
- 45:07Speaker 1: The Channelers got more sick than most.
- 45:10Speaker 2: How convenient, I mean inconvenient?
- 45:12Speaker 1: Yeah, how inconvenient? And so you know plot yeah means
- 45:16Speaker 1: the Channelers have been useless, which you know, if you
- 45:19Speaker 1: want somehow taverin Right, Tavern is keeping in place because
- 45:23Speaker 1: he needs to recruit the White Cloaks, So the bubble
- 45:27Speaker 1: of evil is somehow good for him, right, Like, if
- 45:31Speaker 1: I don't like it, I don't like the Tavereness.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Bad luck, good luck.
- 45:34Speaker 1: I don't like that Tevereness is using evil to make
- 45:37Speaker 1: things happen for him, right. The bubbles of evil always
- 45:40Speaker 1: seem to be random? Yeah, no other time do our
- 45:42Speaker 1: characters benefit from it?
- 45:44Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 45:45Speaker 1: So not my favorite. Not my favorite bubble of evil.
- 45:48Speaker 2: Not my favorite.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Also because it's told like very quickly in retrospective when
- 45:54Speaker 1: it should be this like big thing, but it seems
- 45:56Speaker 1: like the only.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Well if it's going to be that week, I'd rather
- 45:59Speaker 2: not spend page time on That's true.
- 46:02Speaker 1: God though, But like would that not have been a
- 46:04Speaker 1: better chapter than what we get here than being like.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Just done this much more efficiently?
- 46:10Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah whatever, So yeah.
- 46:13Speaker 2: Paren is in the process of interviewing yet another batch
- 46:17Speaker 2: of random mercenaries bandits vagabonds, people who are willing to
- 46:21Speaker 2: behave in exchange for regular meals, and that's really how
- 46:26Speaker 2: he builds the force he has. In addition to scooping
- 46:28Speaker 2: up odds and ends of actual armies. He's also just
- 46:30Speaker 2: building this backdrop grab bag noise of men with swords
- 46:35Speaker 2: who are hungry.
- 46:36Speaker 1: And you know, Tavern is making him recruiting army. He
- 46:39Speaker 1: doesn't want an army. He's getting a fucking army.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Too bad. Pen. It's really funny how he's like, everyone
- 46:45Speaker 2: needs to understand that a thing is a thing, and
- 46:49Speaker 2: I'm not a leader. And it's like, sir, you are
- 46:50Speaker 2: the only one in denial about the fact that a
- 46:53Speaker 2: thing is a thing. Right now, everyone is calling you
- 46:56Speaker 2: a leader. You are effectively a leader. You're the one
- 46:59Speaker 2: being delusional claiming you're not a leader. Everyone else is
- 47:02Speaker 2: actually very feet to the ground, head screwed on straight,
- 47:06Speaker 2: right about this.
- 47:07Speaker 1: Right, You've been leading literally.
- 47:09Speaker 2: Effectively two three months at this point, which is a
- 47:13Speaker 2: long time in book terms.
- 47:14Speaker 1: M hm. And like everybody is sworn fieldy to you.
- 47:17Speaker 1: You have queens who's worn fieldy to you. You're and like,
- 47:20Speaker 1: despite your best efforts, your force keeps growing. Right, you
- 47:24Speaker 1: went into Malden and you came out with more troops
- 47:26Speaker 1: than you went in with. You have Oh my god,
- 47:29Speaker 1: there's this moment where she's like, yeah, and all the
- 47:31Speaker 1: guys shine suddenly want to fight for some fucking reason,
- 47:35Speaker 1: and all these people who've never picked up a spear
- 47:37Speaker 1: before find that they're incredibly talented at it. Right before
- 47:41Speaker 1: the last battle. It's like you were building an army
- 47:45Speaker 1: unlike any other.
- 47:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, if I really breaks the fourth wall
- 47:49Speaker 2: pretty hard in an effort to try to speed this
- 47:51Speaker 2: plot along, and it still doesn't help.
- 47:53Speaker 1: It's only it doesn't really help a bunch at all.
- 47:56Speaker 1: And also, I guess my frustration is also like, at
- 47:59Speaker 1: no point does Paren's army become a deciding factor in
- 48:02Speaker 1: the last battle. So it's like he does all of
- 48:05Speaker 1: this work and all of this like effort to get
- 48:07Speaker 1: these people together, and then they're just like another kind
- 48:10Speaker 1: of not very effective army during the force during the
- 48:13Speaker 1: last battle because they're mostly non channelers.
- 48:18Speaker 2: They just do fighty stuff and that's not very interesting.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Like I think it does a good scene with Tam
- 48:24Speaker 2: where he's doing trollick slaughter, just like absolutely epic and
- 48:28Speaker 2: stuff like you know, infantry fighty stuff. There's only so
- 48:32Speaker 2: many pages we can spend on it.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's like, oh, yes, the Two Rivers Force
- 48:36Speaker 1: is good with arrows, but then why why did he
- 48:39Speaker 1: need the white Cloaks. Why did he need to hang
- 48:41Speaker 1: out with the Shawan Chan, Why did he need Aleandra
- 48:44Speaker 1: and the winged guards?
- 48:45Speaker 2: Like, no, because they just fill in on stuff that
- 48:49Speaker 2: we don't look at because it's just backdrop. Paren brings
- 48:52Speaker 2: the backdrop cast. They're necessary, but they don't get page time.
- 48:57Speaker 1: So and I think that is one of the biggest
- 48:59Speaker 1: flaws of the Last Battle. Is as big and as
- 49:01Speaker 1: epic as it is, and it's big and epic, there
- 49:03Speaker 1: are so many armies in the two in the in
- 49:07Speaker 1: the this world that just don't really get page time
- 49:11Speaker 1: or screen time or are shown to be effective in battle.
- 49:15Speaker 2: Well that's what you get when you try to get
- 49:17Speaker 2: half a continent's worth of people fighting in a single battle,
- 49:20Speaker 2: you're gonna lose some focus.
- 49:22Speaker 1: It is. Yeah, there's some detail that gets lost, for sure. Yeah,
- 49:27Speaker 1: And so they get we get broken down into these
- 49:29Speaker 1: big broad groups and then you only really see from
- 49:31Speaker 1: a minority of those big broad groups.
- 49:33Speaker 2: Well then you headcanon and fan fiction and all of
- 49:37Speaker 2: that to fill in the gaps based on what you
- 49:38Speaker 2: know going in.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, still could have written another three books about
- 49:43Speaker 1: this thing, Like the Last Battle itself could have been
- 49:45Speaker 1: like another three books seriously.
- 49:49Speaker 2: And yeah, so we get a little check in with
- 49:51Speaker 2: some characters, right, we got Arganda and Gallien. They've they've
- 49:55Speaker 2: gotten over their honeymoon period in the relief of getting
- 49:58Speaker 2: their respective you know, in the relief of Malden's aftermath,
- 50:01Speaker 2: and they're back to fighting, you know, like, which we've
- 50:04Speaker 2: never seen them not fighting, but you know, apparently, according
- 50:07Speaker 2: to Paren, there was a period where they weren't fighting.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Well because we have this sort of no more common enemy, right,
- 50:13Speaker 1: there is this idea that they had this common enemy
- 50:16Speaker 1: in the Shidoh and the queen's were gone, and everybody
- 50:19Speaker 1: wanted their leaders back, and everyone reunited behind Parent to
- 50:22Speaker 1: get their leader back. But now we're in this situation
- 50:25Speaker 1: where the leaders are back and everyone's like, well, what
- 50:28Speaker 1: do we do now? Are we following Paren? Are we
- 50:32Speaker 1: you know, what's our goal? Shouldn't I be elevated over
- 50:37Speaker 1: those other people because I'm more important to Parent? Right
- 50:40Speaker 1: that level of just like internal fighting, And not to mention,
- 50:44Speaker 1: you've got the whole thing with Berylaine and Fayel that
- 50:47Speaker 1: hasn't gotten worked out yet, shockingly, even though they worked
- 50:51Speaker 1: out before she got taken to Malden. Basically we have
- 50:53Speaker 1: the added thing of everyone thinking Beryline slept with parent
- 50:57Speaker 1: or parents slept with Beryline entertain and that's leading to
- 51:00Speaker 1: all sorts of problems.
- 51:02Speaker 2: Yeah, you think they would have resolved that by now,
- 51:03Speaker 2: but no, a classic book fashion, nothing has happened in
- 51:06Speaker 2: the intervening time, and now things will happen that the
- 51:08Speaker 2: focus of the narrator is back on the scene. So
- 51:12Speaker 2: what happens next is they connect with a scout that
- 51:16Speaker 2: was left behind from their baggage train that they sent
- 51:18Speaker 2: ahead ahead of Maldon. Right, Remember Parens sent Basil Gil
- 51:22Speaker 2: and everyone and all of the baggage forward to and
- 51:26Speaker 2: Or in case Malden went badly, the baggage train and
- 51:29Speaker 2: the non combatants wouldn't be taken by the Shadow. So
- 51:33Speaker 2: they're looking for them on the road and they have
- 51:35Speaker 2: no come across a scout who was left behind to
- 51:37Speaker 2: tell them, Hey, the plan changed because of road conditions
- 51:41Speaker 2: and you got to turn left here. And that's all
- 51:45Speaker 2: very taberny. It guarantees the intersection with the White Cloaks,
- 51:48Speaker 2: but you know it's important.
- 51:51Speaker 1: No, that's that's been being manipulated by Grendall.
- 51:54Speaker 2: Oh right, that's not even Severian, Right, that's grand All.
- 51:57Speaker 2: That's the trap, that's the t's I wonder if grand
- 52:00Speaker 2: Doll's the one messing with his dreams. He mentions his
- 52:02Speaker 2: dreams being messy. Here again, I wonder if it's Grandall
- 52:05Speaker 2: instead of land Fear and Grendell's less in his head
- 52:08Speaker 2: because she doesn't know him as well, because she's manipulating
- 52:11Speaker 2: stuff in the real world. So I guess she's not
- 52:13Speaker 2: as dreamy of a person. The land Fear is really
- 52:15Speaker 2: the dream bitch.
- 52:16Speaker 1: She's not. I think land Fear is in his dreams
- 52:18Speaker 1: while Grendall's fucking with his army.
- 52:20Speaker 2: Man getting assaulted by two forsaken at the same If
- 52:24Speaker 2: they're not working together, that's still a lot.
- 52:27Speaker 1: But yeah, this is we one hundred percent learned that,
- 52:28Speaker 1: Like the road conditions are totally fine, right, This was
- 52:31Speaker 1: absolutely just I forgot about that. This is the whole
- 52:35Speaker 1: trap set up by Grendall, and she wants the army
- 52:38Speaker 1: to be in the right place at the right time,
- 52:41Speaker 1: and it just happens to be where the white Cloaks are,
- 52:44Speaker 1: and like, yeah, there's all sorts of reasons why it
- 52:46Speaker 1: doesn't go off the way she plans, But them getting
- 52:49Speaker 1: this message and sending their supplies in the other direction
- 52:52Speaker 1: is one hundred percent Grendel trying to get his army
- 52:55Speaker 1: into place for the trap that's coming.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Good damn catch right past that. Every other read ever, because.
- 53:04Speaker 1: It is it's like, wait, why are they Yeah, because
- 53:08Speaker 1: it happens, but yeah, you you believe just like parent did.
- 53:12Speaker 2: I am not clever like grained Dolphin.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Well. The other thing I want to point out in
- 53:18Speaker 1: this chapter is that Paren has a blacksmith's puzzle that
- 53:21Speaker 1: he's constantly figuring that like, this is the hardest puzzle
- 53:25Speaker 1: he's ever encountered, and he's having a lot of trouble
- 53:27Speaker 1: pulling it apart, and like every time he encounters trouble
- 53:31Speaker 1: in the real world, he fingers the puzzle because he
- 53:33Speaker 1: hasn't figured out how to fix the puzzle that came
- 53:36Speaker 1: out of all then, And it's like, Okay, I know
- 53:39Speaker 1: it's not the ambulance seat seat, but it's just as blatant,
- 53:42Speaker 1: you know, the blacksmith's puzzle.
- 53:45Speaker 2: A blacksmith's puzzle for the blacksmith's puzzling.
- 53:48Speaker 1: Oh exactly.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it's cute, but it is a little on the nose.
- 53:53Speaker 1: It's a really on the nose. It's just like, oh, okay,
- 53:57Speaker 1: and I don't think he ever Actually, I don't remember
- 54:01Speaker 1: him solving the puzzle at any point, or this coming
- 54:05Speaker 1: back up or being carried through. After this chapter it
- 54:08Speaker 1: comes up again.
- 54:10Speaker 2: I think he manages to make some progress on it.
- 54:13Speaker 2: Maybe he just hucks it away at the end. I
- 54:15Speaker 2: don't remember. We should try to keep an eye out
- 54:18Speaker 2: for it.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't remember what happens with this puzzle. That's
- 54:22Speaker 1: definitely something to look out for going forward. It's like,
- 54:24Speaker 1: what's going on with this puzzle and is it something
- 54:26Speaker 1: that works as an analogy going forward?
- 54:30Speaker 2: Yeah? So then Paren goes through his laundry list of
- 54:32Speaker 2: once everyone goes away and does their job, then everything
- 54:35Speaker 2: can go back to the way it was. It's just like,
- 54:39Speaker 2: I'm really ready for you to stop thinking that that's
- 54:42Speaker 2: an option. You can never step in the same river twice. Okay,
- 54:45Speaker 2: it's been a long time. You can't go back to
- 54:47Speaker 2: the way things.
- 54:48Speaker 1: You can't go back. And like everyone else, everybody else
- 54:52Speaker 1: knows the last battle is coming. You're friends with the
- 54:54Speaker 1: Dragon Reborn. You know you have a role in the
- 54:56Speaker 1: last battle. What the fuck are you doing? Paren? Like
- 55:00Speaker 1: what the fuck, Like I'm this, Yeah, I really get
- 55:03Speaker 1: frustrated with this, Like you need an army for the
- 55:05Speaker 1: last battle. You have an army, Like why are you
- 55:08Speaker 1: trying to send these people home? Like you don't know that?
- 55:11Speaker 1: Oh look the dark the sky's been dark for months
- 55:14Speaker 1: and we've and turned ultimate crazy black hm hm oh.
- 55:18Speaker 1: And I'm friends with the dragon Reborn who's gonna be
- 55:20Speaker 1: at the last battle, and he is preparing for the
- 55:22Speaker 1: last battle. Hmmm, Like I just uh.
- 55:25Speaker 2: Better go home and bury my head in the sand
- 55:27Speaker 2: like a child.
- 55:28Speaker 1: Right, I get so frustrated, so frustrated with parent.
- 55:32Speaker 4: In these sections, he regressed, He regressed really far, regressed
- 55:35Speaker 4: so hard, Like he needs to be like you know what,
- 55:38Speaker 4: I have been leading these people, yeah, and like it
- 55:41Speaker 4: just it doesn't need to be a struggle, and he
- 55:42Speaker 4: needs to be like I see what's coming out of Malden,
- 55:45Speaker 4: I see the last battle coming.
- 55:47Speaker 1: I don't want to be a leader, but I have
- 55:48Speaker 1: to be.
- 55:49Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, Galad knows it. Goalad does it in like
- 55:54Speaker 2: two fucking seconds, Like two seconds.
- 55:57Speaker 1: It's your duty, pick it up, run with it. I
- 55:59Speaker 1: don't need four more chapters about this.
- 56:01Speaker 2: Yeah, So that's that's happening. And then we think about Messima. Right,
- 56:05Speaker 2: there's there's the conclusion of we know that Paren knows
- 56:08Speaker 2: that Massima will not pop out of the woodwork to
- 56:11Speaker 2: haunt him found the body. He knows that Massima is
- 56:14Speaker 2: very super dead and that's not going to be an issue,
- 56:17Speaker 2: and he's going to go report hiss quote unquote failure
- 56:20Speaker 2: to Rand and he's unsure how Rand will feel about it,
- 56:22Speaker 2: and we know that Rand will go, eh, bummer movie.
- 56:25Speaker 1: Yeah, that's don't I really just wanted him to stop
- 56:28Speaker 1: killing people.
- 56:28Speaker 2: That was all, like, I guess you accomplished the core
- 56:31Speaker 2: of the mission.
- 56:33Speaker 1: It does seem. I always think it's kind of sad though,
- 56:35Speaker 1: that you have all these people who were should have
- 56:38Speaker 1: been the people of the Dragon who would have supported Rand,
- 56:40Speaker 1: and just like got murdered taking Malden.
- 56:43Speaker 2: The dark One really laughed about that one.
- 56:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, and I know they were corrupted, and
- 56:48Speaker 1: I know Messima, you know, has the mash at our corruption.
- 56:53Speaker 1: You know that whatever you want to call it, and
- 56:55Speaker 1: that none of those people were any good that they had,
- 56:57Speaker 1: you know, they smelled bad or whatever.
- 56:59Speaker 2: So that Masha dart Wash whatever happened to him, in
- 57:02Speaker 2: the portal world and then whatever grand All infected him with, right.
- 57:07Speaker 1: Right, and that was infecting all of his followers. Right,
- 57:10Speaker 1: So there's zero chance that we're ever gonna redeem those people.
- 57:13Speaker 2: But they were cult people.
- 57:15Speaker 1: They weren't evil exactly, right, Like I feel like there
- 57:19Speaker 1: should be Like I would have loved to see something
- 57:21Speaker 1: with aarm, where like aarm becomes an example and is
- 57:26Speaker 1: like leading all those people. When Massima dies and like
- 57:30Speaker 1: his and Parent wins him over and with that conversion
- 57:33Speaker 1: is able to win over a bunch more of the
- 57:36Speaker 1: dragon folk. Yeah, the dragon sworn exactly Like I would
- 57:40Speaker 1: love to see that redemption through aarm instead of what
- 57:44Speaker 1: felt like a fairly random, nonsensical death. And I get
- 57:48Speaker 1: that it kind of proves the point that Paren like
- 57:51Speaker 1: wasn't really doing his job, but like that makes me
- 57:53Speaker 1: feel bad. I want Paren to be doing his job.
- 57:55Speaker 2: Right, and then Paren uses that outlier of a failure
- 57:59Speaker 2: to justify falling down on the rest of his job
- 58:01Speaker 2: that he is, yeah, and competent at doing.
- 58:04Speaker 1: Yeah, So you know I want some competency porn, right.
- 58:09Speaker 1: I want to see Parent being an incredibly good leader,
- 58:12Speaker 1: incredibly competent bringing people together. And like really unifying these
- 58:17Speaker 1: forces before the last battle, and that's just not what
- 58:19Speaker 1: we get. And it kind of makes me sad. I
- 58:22Speaker 1: really think that there was a better opportunity to do
- 58:24Speaker 1: something interesting with Parent's plotline and with aarum and the
- 58:27Speaker 1: prophet and stuff like that. But you know, Robert Jordan
- 58:31Speaker 1: just didn't have a plan for him, right, there was
- 58:32Speaker 1: no notes about Paren.
- 58:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and Feyil is doing her best, right, she is
- 58:36Speaker 2: breaking the fourth wall. She is listing his accomplishments in
- 58:39Speaker 2: a sultruy voice because she does see competency porn. She
- 58:43Speaker 2: is saying that Maldon was good for their plot. Like,
- 58:46Speaker 2: she is doing everything she can to drag this man forward,
- 58:48Speaker 2: and it just doesn't work.
- 58:50Speaker 1: It doesn't work because it's very much a talent show. Right,
- 58:52Speaker 1: she's telling us how competent he was. We didn't. We're
- 58:55Speaker 1: not really seeing his competency in any way, shape or form.
- 58:58Speaker 2: And it would I mean, he could be in the
- 59:00Speaker 2: occasion in working with what she's saying, but alas he
- 59:03Speaker 2: is just stubborn as a mule.
- 59:07Speaker 1: Two revers that's how we do it.
- 59:09Speaker 2: Yeah. And then as Paren is dealing with the very
- 59:12Speaker 2: strange concept that Maldon was good for Fayel. We have
- 59:15Speaker 2: an Adel coming up to say, hey, we found I
- 59:17Speaker 2: think white cloaks is what they're saying. You know, you
- 59:19Speaker 2: got to deal with the fact we see a white cloaks,
- 59:21Speaker 2: but we cut over two said white cloaks with Gallad
- 59:26Speaker 2: And here is where we get to start issuing corrections
- 59:29Speaker 2: in this POV.
- 59:31Speaker 1: A couple things about parent stuff to say he never
- 59:33Speaker 1: figured out why Aleandra had met with the prophet and
- 59:36Speaker 1: probably never would. I feel like that's a meta line
- 59:38Speaker 1: where like Sanderson looked into it and was like, yeah,
- 59:42Speaker 1: see why they were meeting Anora, Yeah.
- 59:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah yeah. Tying a bow on the fact that
- 59:45Speaker 2: there will never be a bow tide on it is like, ah,
- 59:49Speaker 2: thank you for letting us know that that's going to
- 59:50Speaker 2: be annoying, and.
- 59:52Speaker 1: Like we have our theory. She thought she could redeem him,
- 59:54Speaker 1: and it turns out she couldn't write like I think
- 59:55Speaker 1: that's what she eventually says, like I thought I could
- 59:57Speaker 1: redeem him. I can't. Moving on, but that doesn't explain
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: what Yeah, I don't like that explanation. Also about Missima,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: he was robbed, right, so like, oh, he was killed
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: by bandits.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was a deception on fight
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: Iel and chow Fa Yelle's part.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: Totally. They picked up five thousand people in the last
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: few weeks, so whatever they went into Malden with, they
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: came out with more, and then another five thousand, and
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: then we end the POV with a messenger saying, up, Hey,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: this something ahead you want to see. Two chapters later,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: it turns out that's a patch of the blight has
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: gotten transported.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: Oh, that's what it is. It's not the White Cloaks.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: It's a bubble of area of effect evil. I don't know.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: The pattern is breaking down, and location doesn't matter as
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: much anymore. Right, we see things switch.
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: The landscape is glitching. It's data mashing, like we've seen
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: that in the White Tower. We've seen it, Like hallways
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: are changing. And this is just a bigger version of
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: the blight. And or you could say the blight spreading.
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: Is spreading in a non congruent manner. Yeh, spores are
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: drifting on the wind and lighting in new places.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: It's like patches of death and evil and stuff like that. Yeah,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: but yeah, this is not quite yet the White Cloaks.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: They have not encountered them yet.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: Okay, look, guys, I have not read these last three
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: books very many times. I've said it before, I will
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: say it again. I will not apologize. I will just
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: be wrong.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: No, these are We're definitely on a journey of discovery
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: for these last three books, more so than we were
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: with the rest of them. Although you know, I feel
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: like the podcast started out as a journey of discovery
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: and being like I want to talk about these books
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: because I don't know everything about them. Not that I
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: know everything about them and I want to impart it,
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: but because there's a lot of mysteries I haven't figured out.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I know the lore up until these three books,
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: and now I'm just like, still helpful for the read through,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: but research is important that right, Or I'm glad to
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: know that you corrected that so we know where we're at.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: It. I mean again, I didn't until I was That's
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: why I was slipping through. I was like, I've got
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: my notes in here. I feel like I have some
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: things to say, and those notes did tell me what
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: that patch was. So yeah, next is the Gallet POV.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: The Gallt POV, and this is I feel like there's
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: multiple corrections we have to make in this section because
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: like I thought it was days where he'd been tortured
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: before he got rescued out of this. No, it hasn't been.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: It's like literally just been a day and he's anticipating torture.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: And also we thought that trom and his cohort is
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: who rebelled and killed Osunawa, it's not.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: It's Austin as I think. I stated that like Asinowa's
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: people were like participated in that, but it's not just participated.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: They did the whole thing.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: They initiated, they completed.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: They basically saw, you know, the person at the head
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: of their party was corrupt and doing things for his
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: own benefit rather than the good of the people, and
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: rather than sticking the party politics, they went ahead and actually,
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: you know, brought that person down now by killing him.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: But I mean, they are the white cloaks. That's kind
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: of their only response to anything. We have to stay
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: in the cannon.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: Sometimes they torture then kill.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: Sure, sure, yeah, just saying the analogy can only go
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: so far without breaking cannon. But yeah, they looked at
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: what was patently and clearly false and they responded according
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: to reality instead of whatever their leader wanted them to think.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: And we have Gallad getting told that he, instead of
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: being tortured to death, will be made the leader of
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: what is left of the White Cloaks. But we start
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: with him in the tent kind of getting his bearings
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: and like again thinking about how like he still has
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: crusted blood on him and he's anticipating torture. Like I
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: was totally wrong about the time that I thought this
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: was days. I literally thought this was days. It's ours, yeah,
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: because I.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: Think I was, Like, he goes to sleep and basically
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: up and in that time he's yeah, the things happen, yeah, exactly,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Like he wakes up going like, oh, yeah, no, you're
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: free now.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: Yeah. He literally passes out from the pain and when
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: he comes to, it's all over.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: It's all over. So he's cleaning himself with a strip
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: of cloth, which I'm always like, h I'm so grossed
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: out by that, Like cleaning yourself off with spit and
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: a piece of canvas, Like spit is just the grossest
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: thing to clean yourself with, because.
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: Like I'm also like, this man is very dehydrated. I
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: don't think he has that much spit to give.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: No, No, it's just very.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: I mean, I get it. He's encrusted with dirt and
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: blood like any moisture in a storm. But it's gross,
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: and I do I roll my eyes. But I'm also
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: pleased at his thought. Her is naive thought. Of the
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: one he was angry at was Astunaba, who took what
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: was true and muddied it. There were many who did
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: that in the world. But the children should be different,
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: And I'm like, thank you for articulating the entire fallacy
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: of your belief system. Right right, The children aren't different.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: They never have been. You never should have joined them
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: based on their actual actions. It's but they have the world.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: There is no such thing as a perfect philosophy that
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: makes people good. People are good or bad in the
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: communities that they are in. It has nothing to do
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: with the philosophy at the top, or very little to do.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: It has more to do with the incentive structure rather
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: than the philosophy. Like what are INCENTI people incentivized to do?
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: And in the White Cloaks, they're incentivized to torture people
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: to prove that they're dark friends.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, And Glad should have seen that.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: Because you're trying to because every time you do you
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: have like this victory where you're like, oh, yeah, I
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: have taken down the dark friends. That makes me victorious.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: And it's like, actually, you've just killed a bunch of
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: innocent people and call them dark friends. But you're incentivized
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: to call them dark friends because then otherwise you're just
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: killing innocent people and an ineffective fighting force. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: where the ice and I have an actual like enforced
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: oaths that you have to follow.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but he uses the cleaning as much to center
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: himself as kind of a meditation. Sure, else, I'll allow
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: it because you know, we need him to again prove
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: that he's got the mind of someone who could learn
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: to channel if he just wanted to.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: I think that I would have liked it if he'd
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: been left with a little bit of water that he
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: could like dip the cloth in, like a little bit
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: of drinking water.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: Yeah, a bucket of wash water kind of thing. Yeah,
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: that would have been a lot more satisfying. The less Yeah,
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: it gross. I kind of just skipped over everything. Yeah,
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: spit like now now Lucky, Yes, lucky.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: And so you know he's he's like, my strategy work.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: I'm victorious. I saved the lives of my people, even
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: though like I'm going to suffer for it like I
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: want essentially is what he's thinking. And I can win
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: again by not giving in and claiming not to be dark. Friend,
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: you know I will be killed as a man who
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: you know, proclaiming I am of the light the whole time.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: Sort of what his thoughts are.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: Right, He's like, I can stand here naked as a
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: day was, but still be a man of honor who
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: knows that he will not break under torture. He's like
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: psyching himself up. He's standing straight, he's thinking about how
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: he's definitely not going to crack under torture. He is
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: gallotting as hard as he.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: Can, totally totally because not because like he thinks he
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: can resist torture, but because it would be the wrong
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: thing to do to give into the torture. Right.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: He will not lie. It's literally against his entire nature
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: to ever lie. So he knows that he's not going
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: to do that.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: And there's this moment here where he says his pains
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: were nothing now he felt insect bites that were worse,
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: And I'm like, yeah, I don't think so.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: Him and Randon Agwain just like I don't feel my body?
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: What body? No pain?
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: That is sort of an interesting like part of the
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: wheel of time philosophy, is this idea that you can
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: separate from your brain and like just not experience pain.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: And we've talked about it a lot with respect to
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: like people in the real world and their chronic pain issues.
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: But this is Galad dealing with a very acute pain issue.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: This is not chronic at all. It's just I think
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: Robert Jordan had a specific relationship with pain and suffering,
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: you know what, with the whole going through the military
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: and everything. I think he just, yeah, he knew how
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: to separate from a cute discomfort in a way that
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: he gives to all of his main characters.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: Mmmm.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: And then yeah, his allies walk in and he goes,
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: excuse me, did you just break your o's go back
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: out there and surrender to the men you just killed, right.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: It's like I told you not to fight, like we didn't.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: He's like, you turned your swords on fellow children. Like
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: he's so pissed off. At first, he wants to reject this,
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: and they're like, nah, you kind of were so honorable.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: We had to do a murder and he's like, shit,
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: that's like my entire life's ambition.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: It was wrong. What they were doing to him was wrong,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: like and that's for once, for once, the children believe
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: that when it happens to one of their own, right, you.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: Know, yeah, when it comes after the golden Boy of
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: their own organization, then the lions too far. But all
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: the innocent women and children from other nations that were
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: killed beforehand, that wasn't a lie too.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Far, that's not a problem. Yeah, yeah, no, I have
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: some issues with the White Cloaks.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: One or two. Fortunately I think Robert Jordan meant for
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: them to be that, so it's all yes there will
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: don't have to be mad at Robert Jordan about this.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: He wrote them to beat this.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: The consequences. They killed about a third of the questioners.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: We have the We saw the amedicians who were a
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: good portion of the force, and they didn't interfere. They
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: want to be away from the shawn Chan, so they're
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: willing to join the White.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: Cloaks, which like fair, I mean, an invading force versus
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: your own Homebrew militia. Yeah, I would probably a side
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: with the Homebrew militia better the devil, you know, right,
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: I guess, especially because Amadicia is extremely anti channeling and
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: the shawn Channer coming in with channelers like the calculus
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: makes a lot of sense for an infantry force like
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: these people represent.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: I like the way you put that that there's this
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: sort of common anti channeling bend among the two of them,
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: and that helps them.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: I mean, Amiditians are where the the white Cloaks are from, right,
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: Like they have a big cultural.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Open that's a good point that, okay, and white Cloaks
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: is kind of the same nation. So in a lot
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: of ways, O, Amiditians are like, yeah, we are. White
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: Cloaks are Ameditians in a way they're not technically in.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: The face of a common enemy like the shan Chan,
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: the differences are immaterial. We're all Amidesians, even the ones
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: who are you know, children from other nations like, nah,
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: we we like you guys better than whoever these flame throwing,
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: eyes to die wielding invaders are. And yeah, Galad the
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: way parents should looks at the weight of men offering
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: their swords to him and says, I accept. Someone needs
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: to drive this train, and I know that I have
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: the capacity to drive it effectively. So that's what I'm
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: going to do even though I have a lot of
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: foster syndrome. I can't leave it up to just anyone.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: And then he is the leader from then on out.
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: He doesn't question it, he doesn't second guess it. He
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: doesn't He.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Doesn't even make huge mistakes, aside from listening to some
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: of his subordinates a little too much in the face
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: of overwhelming evidence. But he doesn't make like massive casualty
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: event blunders.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: No, No, he does. Like the only thing he does
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: that he shouldn't is like basically declare a war against Paren,
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: and then he fortunately listens to parent well enough to
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: get out of that.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: Which in large part is because Paren saves him from
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: a dark friend trap or from a Trollek trap. That's
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: a lot of what helps. But still, I mean, they
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: were setting up for battle. He was gonna make a
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: huge mistake, but he manages to not make a huge mistake.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: So we're gonna count that as an almost win. Yeah,
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: And I like how he uses his faith and delight
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: to help protect him to he's like, you know what,
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: I don't think I'm ready, but the children have made
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: their decision, and the Light will have to protect them
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: for it. I'm like, that's a good approach and just
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: be like you know what, You're right, You've chosen me,
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: and the dice have now been cast. Good luck with me.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: And he says we're marching to and Or. I assume
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: that's basically to join the battle, right, that's because that's
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: where he's like, I can get to Elaine, I can
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: join the battle. She will have me.
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's the idea.
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: The idea is like she can tell me the where
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: to point the white Cloaks for the last battle because
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: she's the biggest kind of army nation. Yeah.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: He's basically anticipating her being the meta general that she's
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: going to be assigned to be later. He's almost anticipating that.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: He's like, well, Elaine is a good person to go
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: to if I don't know who else to talk to.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: She'll know how to handle the battle.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: Yeah, well, and she is. He found out that she
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: did rule and Or right, so she's a queen and
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: she's my brother or sis, I'm her brother, right, So
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: of course, like, yeah, that's going to work.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: Yeah. The plan he had before joining up with these
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: guys still applies. Now. He just has many more swords
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: to come to bring to bear. But again, he's not
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: marching to and Or to invade. He's marching to Andor
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: to get marching orders in maybe even gateways up to
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: where the real battle is. So you know, he knows
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: that he can talk a lane down from freaking out totally.
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: And he knows he has to work with Isidi, right,
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: and he knows that like Elaine is a good way
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: to bring the White Cloaks, like and Or has a
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: history of being cooperative with the Isidi that in a
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: way that the White Cloaks don't. And he's like, but
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: I know I can negotiate with Elaine.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: And and Or, Yeah, they have diplomatic rapport.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: Exactly, exactly, exactly as much as she doesn't.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: Like him, but he knows that like she will listen
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: to reason as queen totally with knowing who they are.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: He's like, I can make this work. And then you know,
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: she's a lot more reasonable than anyone expected once he
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: actually shows up in the room.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: Well, and especially you know, as he basically becomes part
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: of parents force and is negotiated that truce right, Like,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: he doesn't even negotiate for the White Cloaks. He negotiates
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: to be part of Parents Force and Parents Force negotiates
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: they're joining the last battle and they're like only allowed
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: to do it under parent Yeah.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: Well yeah, but I mean it would have worked even
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: if he hadn't teamed up with PAREN, Like, it would
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: have worked. He would have been able to get his
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: army to the last battle effectively by going to a line.
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: But yeah, he comes with PAREN, which makes it even
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: more efficient.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: Yeah, there we go, and that's that's the two chapter
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: the opening two chapters.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Yeah not that was like about an hour and a
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: half of chapter content.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: Yep, yep.
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: So glad we doubled those chapters up. That was a
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: good call.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: And it's looking, based on our pre view of the book,
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: pretty much every chapter, at least in the first half
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: of the book is going to get doubled up.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: Next week is the exception to that. We will be
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: doing the chapter next week, but then yeah, it's doubles
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: for like two months after that. But Duenko, you are
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: welcomed at Well, I'm not going to say you're welcome
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: to start a rival podcast because that seems very counterproductive, but.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: You know it's sometimes we skip one just so like
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: the pairings work better, right, because it's like, if chapter
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: four five work really well together, then it's important to
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: do just to standalone chapter three so we can link
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: them up.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: And I promise you, guys, I've done enough editing to
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: know we really do run out of quality brain output
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: at about three hours, Like we really stopping it an
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: hour and a half, two hours, Like by the time
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: you get to three hours, we sound like drunk people
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: in terms of our logic, Like it's just it's not
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: good stuff. You're much better off with having us cut
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: ourselves off at one hundred and twenty minutes. Definitely promise,
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: And with that, let's turn recording off. Recording is on.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: You don't have to sew in order to appreciate Use
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: to Sew. Used to Sew is a podcast about sewing machines,
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: sewing culture, and sewing history in the past and present.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: We talk about dealing with fast fashion. We talk about
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: the invention of sewing machines. We talk about how the
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: American experiment has been influenced by sewing machines and vice versa.
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: We go all over the place. It has nothing to
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: do with how to sew, that's not the point. And
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: then you get to meet my mom in all of
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: her creative stage persona glory. They want to hear you
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: are demanding Spadoinkle telling us how many chapters to do,
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: demanding guests hosts. It's nice to have such a rapid fan.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Well, I have finished going through Dungeon Crawler Carl the
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: book series. What's out so far? Which would be book seven?
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: I believe that's correct. Whatever, Yes, yeah, I think it's
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: a really good series, and I think it's interesting the
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: way it has progressed beyond a game type RPG. Gotta say,
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: a lot of fun, definitely worth reading. It gets a
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: little crazy, Like I have two criticisms with Dungeon Crawler Kral,
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: I'll say I love it. Sometimes the battle scenes get
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: a little repetitive, right, because it's kind of like a
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: video game, right. Sometimes there's the same kind of fight
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: over and over again, and then it gets really complicated
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: really fast, and sometimes it's hard to keep track of
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: all the characters. And I don't even know if that's
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: a criticism so much as I need to go back
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: and reread it, and and I'm on my sort of
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: going back through it again. But it's worth it that,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: like after the first seven books, I'm going back through
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: and rereading it, and I'm sort of catching things and
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: foreshadowing and stuff like that. There's there's some good work.
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: I really really highly recommend the series if you're looking
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: for something that's it's a fun read that escalates, you know,
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: I'm putting it in the I don't want to call
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: it the Dresden Files, the Bob of Verse. These these
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: categories of books that are somewhat lighthearted or often told
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: from a first person perspective, from a dude who's just
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: trying to, you know, make things work as best they
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: can and getting along, you know, but then often has
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: a power progression or power creep as they get more
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: Like Dresden gets more powerful Bob Averse as he spreads
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: you know, he destroys the fucking galaxy spoilers right, like
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: or solar system. He destroys a solar system, right. So
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: there's that level of like, Okay, there's some power creep
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: going on in these in these books, and but they're fun,
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: light reads. They're a very different category than what I
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: would call epic fantasy. You know, these like heroes journeys
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: where lots of characters because they are so focused on
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: the protagonist that one person who's telling the story from
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: an eye perspective, first person perspective, and yeah, I think
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: they're all you can get bored with them if you want,
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: or you can engage with the characters. This kind of
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: you know, it reminds me a lot of old school
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: nineties television where you had twenty six episodes, like they're
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: not all good, right, but like if you care about
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: the characters, it's worth watching them.
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: All right, right, right, yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: As opposed to like we might have these new shows.
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: We're all eight, you know, we have eight episodes and
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: they're all fucking you know, top notch, high octane, every
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: moment counts episodes. Yeah, but that can also be detrimental.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: It's a different approach. It's a very different approach. They're
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: not really equivalent. I know which one I prefer.
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: Lightlighted fool. I have not read The Frugal Wizard. I
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: think it's the only Sanderson book I haven't read because
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: it's not Cosmeer and so I never got around reading it.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: It's also a little harder to get a hold of because,
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: like you know, epic fantasy is hard. It's hard to
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: find good stuff, right, I'd say the last thing that
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: I liked, that I would classify as epic fantasy. Was
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: like Heinous trilogy that was really sort of this big
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: epic world, lots of characters, lots of plotlines, switching pobs,
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: that sort of thing.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I should read that sometime sometime sometimes.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: Other news, my cat's still missing. I'm pretty upset about that.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: Not much you can do at this point that we
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: haven't already done.
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: That sucks every week we come back and I'm hoping
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: for a better update. That's a bummer. That puts it
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: three weeks now.
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: I want to say, it's only been two two as
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: of Sunday, so we're into the third week.
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: Gotcha, gotcha.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: It's just it's the uncertainty, I think, is what's really
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: rough about that. Did someone just snatch my cat and
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: it's living somewhere fine in somebody else's house. Did a
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: iote get him hit by a car somewhere and in
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: a couple of those scenarios you'll never find out. Yeah,
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: and I did all the things you're supposed to do.
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: We've done all the things you're supposed to do for cat.
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: He's chipped, we put up posters, we've done the next
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: doors thing, all that kind of stuff.
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: So well, I promise y'all an update on my sewing
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: machine in contrast with the cat situation. And apparently you're
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: not supposed to take a sewing machine apart three different
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: sewing machines apart, intending to put them back together into
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: one sewing machine, assuming they're all the parts are interoperable,
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: eight months before you decide to do the reassembly. According
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: to my mom's extensive research, this is not the correct
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: way to efficiently put the thing back together. So she's
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: been slowly but surely troubleshooting her way into assembling this
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: Davis vertical feed out of three different machines worth of
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: parts that because it's like they're spread out across like
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: forty years, so sometimes even screws that are meant to
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: be the same, there's enough drift over time in how
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: they were getting made that, like the thread patterns don't
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: line up if the machines are forty years apart in
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: their manufactured day, even though they're ostensibly the same. So
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: it's been a bit of a journey. But I've been
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: getting a lot of little fiddley projects done in my
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: sewing room while she works on that. We're just kind
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: of parallel playing while she you know, yells at the
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: sewing machine and threatens to you know, can't be stuck
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: if it's liquid. There's a lot of restoration happening. But
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: she's getting there. She's getting there every work session. It
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: does move forward, just is taking a lot longer than
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: she thought.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: So that reminds me so much of my job because
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: I work in these microchip industry, but I work on
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: machines that were built, you know usually or at least
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: designed thirty years ago, and they've been buying new ones
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: ever since. But it's the same machine, and so you
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: think it's the same machine. It's going to have the
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: same parts until you need to replace something and the
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: new one you buy doesn't fit and it's like, well,
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: it's the same part number it's always been. It's like, yeah,
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: but you changed it somewhere.
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: It changed Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly, just the casting
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: that they made, the precision of what they were doing, right,
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: because this is a machine from like the eighteen seventies, eighties.
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: Something like that, eighteen or nineteen eighteen, wholl okay, so
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: one hundred and forty years.
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: Yeah, this's an old Treuttle machine. So like the amount
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: of progression that they had in their ability to precisely
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: make things over like a forty year period, pretty radical
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: changes right from the oldest of these versions through the
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: newest one that she has that's from you know, like
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: nineteen ten or twenty right, Like there's a big range
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: of machine precision over that time. But it's you know,
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: we're going along and I like have Like I said,
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: I've made little tiny lacy curtains to put up in
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: my kitchen in the high windows. So there's just like
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: these cute little lacy curtains of them. Okayay, yeah, yeah,
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: it's just little. The parallel play of working on stuff
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: together with her is great. And then we did a
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: great work session today for us to sew because we
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: had like email logins and other you know stuff to
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: do that was just easier to do in person to
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: just be there working on troubleshooting stuff together. And in
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: the course of that, I learned I can upload RSS
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: feeds to YouTube automatically, so now instead of having to
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: do the Watt spoilers episodes manually every week, where I
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: have to remember on Friday to like put all the
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: stuff to get they're going to dobe Premiere Pro and
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: export it manually. I can just have the RSS feed
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: from spreaker, just trigger a whole thing with YouTube and
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: just have it be all connected and we'll just be automatic.
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: And I'm so jazzed. This is going to actually save
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: me a lot of time per week and add way
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: more reach to all my podcasts. Because I didn't know
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: that was an option. I learned it was an option.
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: I'm so excited.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: So for the forty of you, and we see it's
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: pretty much almost always about forty people that are listening
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: on YouTube, this should be you shouldn't have any more
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: delays on the episodes. Although you won't get the pretty pictures.
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: You won't get the pretty picture. You will still have
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: to go back to our You'll have to go back
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: to our social media for that for sure. But yeah,
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: it will be precisely on time every week, So look
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: forward to that.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: Except I'm sure like the first two weeks when it'll
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: break horribly because technology is the thing.
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: Well, I mean there is that factor, but you know,
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: mercury retrograde ended yesterday, so we're good.
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Other than that, I think I spent this weekend
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: hanging shelves. I bought a bunch of shelving for the
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: house in various locations that needed it, laundry room, the bathroom,
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: some other places that I can't remember right now. And
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: we got and we got a real mattress for our
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: guest bed. We had an inflatable one that we were
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: like it was co playing as our guest bed slash
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: camping mattress. Now it's just a camping mattress and we
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: have a real mattress for the guestbed.
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: So nice.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: You know, nesting, I've been nesting. It's been fun. It's
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: nice too. Yeah.
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: So what we did over the weekend was we went
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: up to the Selett's pow Wow in Selet's, Oregon, the
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: niska Ilahi pow Wow, And that was really cool. I'd
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: never been to a pow wow before. And we were
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: only there for like four hours because it was a
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: long drive. It's a long day overall, but it was
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: really cool. It was really cool sitting on the ground
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: while all those drums were going and all the regalia
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: is just so pretty.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: And so what does a powow involve? I don't know
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: anything about.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: Lots of dancing, lots of dancing. It's on the like
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: I guess this one. A lot of competitive dancers come
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: to it. So there's like a big central circle and
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: everything is set up around the central circle and only
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: the dancers and the drums, and a drum means a
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: group of musicians who all play the same drum. It's
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: like band. So only the drums and the dancers go
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: into the circle. And yeah, there's a grand entry a
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: couple of times where they all process through, and then
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: there's like what they call intertribal dances where anyone can
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: just kind of go do whatever. And then they have
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: like actual divisions like little kids, Like we saw the
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: little kids. We saw the little kids doing their practice divisions.
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: And they go out there and they do like two dances,
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: I think, and they're just wearing all these beautiful jingle
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: dresses and feather head dresses, and they have fans made
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: out of turkey feathers and just really elaborate regalia. Some
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: of it's obviously very old and like family heirloom stuff,
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: and some of it's obviously made much more recently. Everyone jingles.
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: Everyone's wearing sleigh bells and jingle bells and these rattles
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: and just the smellscape and the soundscape was so different
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: from any other like gathering, summer party, street fair market
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: I've ever been to. It was a lot of the same,
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: like pop up tends and curls of smoke from the
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: food vendors and you know, trays of earrings you can buy.
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: But also it all just smelled and sounded different.
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: So what makes it a powow versus just like a
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: festival or like.
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: The tribes are doing it? Okay, this is an actual
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: tribal event, like we were very much in the racial
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: minority as white people, Like, it's open to non natives.
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: Non natives are welcome to come. It's a front facing
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: cultural event, but it is a cultural event of the
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: confederated tribes of the Sallettes. And like I said, a
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: lot of dancers come from like all over.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: I was concerned that it wasn't a tribal event, and
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: I was like, hmmm.
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: No, no, this is like an actual, real tribal event.
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: And my mom was pointing out you could see in
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: the beadwork designs that are like from the Great Lakes
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: region or whatever, like you could tell just from looking
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: at the regalia there are people from all over who
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: have come for the competitive dancing because it's like a
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: three day event. And yeah, I bought some earrings and necklace,
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: and we had some food. I didn't really have very
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: much food because my food was timed weird for the
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: day and do you know me and.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: Travel and food, Yeah, it doesn't happen.
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: But Brandon had some food and it all just smelled
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: so different, and there was lots of sage burning, and
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: there was like booths full of tanned animal furs and hides,
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: and it was just and like seriously mostly Native people,
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: like it was mostly Native. We were very much like
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: these weird white people outsiders, just kind of like politely
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: hanging out on the back edge, being like, wow, this
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: is so cool. My mom knew some people who were there,
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: but it was a much bigger powwow than she had
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: ever been to before, because she'd been many times to
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: many other powows, which she was like, this is the
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: biggest one I've ever been to. And so we did
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: not find her friends, who's ostensibly had a booth somewhere
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: in all of that, right, right, But yeah, they had
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: a great like shuttle system. So we went into Selects,
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: which is a reservation town. Like the whole thing is
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: selects tribal space as far as I know, and like
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: we just parked at the school and then went to
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: a little stop and then a shuttle came by and
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: took everyone up the hill and so it was a
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: shuttle running like every fifteen minutes, so you could get
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: taken up to the event space and not have to
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: deal with like crowded parking. Like our actual parking was
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: very chill. But yeah, it was really beautiful and you know,
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: nice of them to let that be a front facing,
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: public facing tribal event, and you know, lots of stuff
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: I didn't understand, and lots of people who obviously knew
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: each other very well, and you know, it was like
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: we were very much like tourists. But like I mean,
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: I was reading on like all the Reddit forums, like
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: how to politely go to a pow wow and like
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: not be disrespectful and like because there's rules, right, like
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: you can't take pictures of people without they're permission, and
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: like pointing is rude, and like there's all these little
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: things and.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: I feel like some of those should be you know,
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: Respect for elders. A lot of the rules made me cringe.
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: With the knowledge of the events that precipitated the rules
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: needing to get me, and it goes looking at different
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: tribal websites where like they had very specific rules about
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: like you can't just wander across the central dance space
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: like it's a beer garden. That's actually like sacred space.
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: And I'm just like wow, just the some of these
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: rules seem like common sense, some of them seem like
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: event logistics, and some of them seem like dear God,
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: can white people please not be the worst? Like, oh
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: my god, this should not need to stated, Like fuck. Yeah.
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: It was just a really cool sense of like we
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: literally went to another nation. We went like touristing in
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: another nation, and like did the thing, and it was
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: it was a cool way to spend a Saturday.
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: I think that the the presence of Native Americans in
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: the United States is something that in the East Coast
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: I was very separated from, and it's much more common
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: out here on the West coast because there is a presence, right.
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: Like it's a much more recent colonization.
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: Yeah now, and just how much that like I kind
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: of grew up with the idea that there were no
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: Native Americans left, like never seen one, never met one,
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: until I came out here, you know, it was this whole.
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: Oh, and they exist on the East coast, but.
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it's very small enclaves compared to what's what's going
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: on out here, and with very few resources.
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: I would not bet money on that. I would not
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: bet money.
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: On that compared to what's out here, I would.
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: Not bet money on that. There's a concerted effort to
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: make sure that we don't know what the fuck we're
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: talking about when it comes to the indigenous population of
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: this country. So I'm just gonna not make strong claims
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: about anything fair. Yeah, it was. And now that I've
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: liked one powipp page on Facebook, now I'm being informed
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: of the like seventy five other ones that are happening
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: within a three hour drive of me. There's a lot
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: out here. There's a lot out here, and it's it's
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: pow wow season because summer.
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and people are saying there's there's a there's a
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: large presence in the Midwest, and that I was aware
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: of as well, but uh Man, East Coast and south.
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: It's complicated everywhere. Yeah, our ignorance is a really important
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: part of how the powers that be keep exploiting the
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: land and ruining the planet for everyone? Is us being
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: ignorant of all that?
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: That's a universal well us ignorant?
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: No, yeah, our ignorance is really important for them to
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: maintain power.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: Actually, right, yeah, which you know, right now, I'm sort
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: of buried in a flood of information that keeps me ignorant,
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: which is kind of a crazy way to think about it.
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: But yeah, the Internet had this moment of feeling so
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: hopeful and now it's like the worst tool.
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I really do. I really feel like it's
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: just when I get onto Google, like I can't find
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: anything I'm looking for that's not sponsored ads, like even
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: just simple Like I hate to say this, but like
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: they've kind of shut down effective pirate and maybe I'm
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: just not a teenager anymore, so I don't have to
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: know how to affect pirate anymore. But like, I really
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: do feel like there's this this moment in the Internet
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: where it's like it used to be open and free
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: and they couldn't stop anything, and now it's like, oh yeah,
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: but except now the people in England needed their IDs
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: to look at, you know, any sort of adult website
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: and it's like wait, what, how how is that a thing?
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: It's a mess, you know.
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: And it's just an example. You know, it's just a mess.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: It's just a huge mess of like control. And you know,
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: some people are like, well, we need the regulation, and
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: it's like, yeah, but.
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: We need different regulations than this puritanical controlling stace.
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: I'm just we need the regulations that nerds have been
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: asking for since the mid nineties that we just can't
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: be bothered to get around to. Those are the regulations
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: we need, not whatever. This fucking just.
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: Like do you want to accept cookies? Yes? Or no?
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: On every fucking website that pops up.
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: Like, hey, wiretap, how do I make pancakes? You've seen
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: that comic. Used to be Oh no, there's a wire
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: tap in the wall. Now it's hey, wiretap, how do
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: I make pancakes?
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: That is so true. I resisted Alexa for so long,
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: and now I can't turn my lights on without her.
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: I will continue to resist voice command technology until it
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: is as cool as Star Trek and literally talks to
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: me in the Star Trek lady's voice.
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: I will say, the ability to say good night Alexa
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: and have every single light in my house turn off
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: is really convenient. At the end of the night and
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: also then have them all like on a schedule and
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: stuff like that. The only thing I did was link
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: the smart light lights to Alexa, So I mean, I
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: have an app that I can use, but I can
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: also verbally.
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: I just don't want to talk to my computer.
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: That just yeah, yeah, it mostly sucks.
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: Not until it is literally the Star Trek lady talking
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: back to me with the level of intelligence and creativity
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: that Star Trek computers had, Like not until then.
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: I do like the fact that you can change the
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: keyword and you can change it to computer if you
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: want to, so you can be like computer, just like.
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: I do appreciate that. I do appreciate that. I'm like,
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: I'm glad for everyone who that is the line that
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: allowed awesome to cross over it will not be me.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: Anyway, is that these are totally random thoughts about life
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: and the Internet that just don't matter to anybody who
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: cares about Wheel of Time.
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: Do we want to talk about things that matter to
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: people who care about Wheel of Time?
