- 0:03Speaker 1: And then there were four.
- 0:05Speaker 2: And three of us.
- 0:06Speaker 1: What's up?
- 0:07Speaker 3: Brand new week of FT. Post-game shows I'll talk about
- 0:10Speaker 3: coming up in a moment.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Cool merch. I've got Jackson Churio. AJ's wearing a Bryce
- 0:15Speaker 1: Terang shirt. Wow.
- 0:18Speaker 4: AJ's is electric. I'm not sure what happened there, but AJ's.
- 0:23Speaker 4: I told Bryce when I saw him, I'm like, have
- 0:24Speaker 4: you seen these shirts? He said no. So we probably
- 0:28Speaker 4: sent him one or two. And I was like, they
- 0:29Speaker 4: got like lightning and stuff all over them.
- 0:31Speaker 5: Right.
- 0:31Speaker 4: So I didn't see it. And he's like, wow, really?
- 0:33Speaker 4: I haven't even seen it. But Bryce, here it is. Sorry,
- 0:36Speaker 4: he has his name up there. It says Bryce. Although
- 0:39Speaker 4: I always want to spell it with a Y. I
- 0:41Speaker 4: don't know why. One of the most electric players that
- 0:47Speaker 4: probably has zero drip. And that shirt is more drippier
- 0:51Speaker 4: than Bryce's. Like he's a very just, what is that?
- 0:55Speaker 4: Not even keel. I'm not sure what the word is
- 0:57Speaker 4: that I'm even looking for. He's just like a ho-hum superstar.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Would you say workman-like, lunch pail?
- 1:05Speaker 4: Workman-like. They said yesterday, America's second baseman. I like that.
- 1:10Speaker 4: I heard that. I like that. He's America's second baseman.
- 1:14Speaker 4: He just has the SoCal cool. I mean, he's from
- 1:16Speaker 4: Southern California. Is that what it is? It's just like
- 1:19Speaker 4: a SoCal. I mean, he's awesome to talk to if
- 1:21Speaker 4: you ever get the chance to talk to him.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Great dude.
- 1:22Speaker 4: He's absolutely incredible to talk to. Fun as all heck.
- 1:27Speaker 4: I'll tell a funny story. So in the Brewers' clubhouse,
- 1:31Speaker 4: And on the floor is this Milwaukee. It says Milwaukee,
- 1:35Speaker 4: and it's gigantic. Clats, I'm sure you've seen it, but
- 1:37Speaker 4: it says Milwaukee across the bottom of the floor. And
- 1:40Speaker 4: he walked by, and in one of the E's, he
- 1:44Speaker 4: stepped in the little E, the little circle of the E,
- 1:48Speaker 4: and didn't step on the Milwaukee. And I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa,
- 1:52Speaker 4: what is that? And he goes, I don't like to
- 1:55Speaker 4: step on the logo. I'm like, dude, how do you
- 1:56Speaker 4: miss the logo? It's like the whole clubhouse. He's like,
- 1:59Speaker 4: I know, it's just a respect thing. I was always
- 2:01Speaker 4: told not to step on the logo. And then I think,
- 2:03Speaker 4: I don't know, Verducci or someone walked up and stepped,
- 2:06Speaker 4: or I don't know, Ueno, whoever, one of the people
- 2:08Speaker 4: I was working with, Adam Amin, and they stepped like
- 2:10Speaker 4: right on the W or U, wherever you're standing. And
- 2:14Speaker 4: I'm like, they don't care about that. And he just
- 2:16Speaker 4: started laughing. He's like, I know, but I play here
- 2:17Speaker 4: and I respect the heck out of this organization. So
- 2:20Speaker 4: he's like trying to find out where to step without
- 2:22Speaker 4: stepping on the actual logo, which, again, takes up the
- 2:24Speaker 4: whole clubhouse. I love that. I love that. I was
- 2:27Speaker 4: going to tell a story when I was at alumni day,
- 2:29Speaker 4: he was standing in the dugout sitting next to us,
- 2:32Speaker 4: you know, just hanging out after their game that they
- 2:34Speaker 4: just lost. They shouldn't have lost, but they're sitting there
- 2:38Speaker 4: and just hanging out just like that. And Randy Wolf,
- 2:41Speaker 4: who has definitely got some plus tax since he's been
- 2:44Speaker 4: done playing, he was hitting Randy Wolf. The pitcher was
- 2:47Speaker 4: hitting and he had a dinger in the alumni game
- 2:50Speaker 4: and he goes out and he looks at him and
- 2:54Speaker 4: he's like rounding the bases all like super muscly and jacked.
- 2:57Speaker 4: And he goes, whew, he goes, those peptides really are working,
- 3:02Speaker 4: I guess. So he's like, he's not only is he respectful,
- 3:05Speaker 4: really good. He's got a little comedian in him.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I like that.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Well, we're going to get to know him a little
- 3:13Speaker 3: bit more over the next couple of weeks on a
- 3:15Speaker 3: national stage. We also will learn more about, the Rays
- 3:20Speaker 3: and the Guardians. We have a postgame show tonight after
- 3:22Speaker 3: that game, ALCS game one. We will also address what
- 3:25Speaker 3: happens in game two of the Brewers-Dodgers series. So we
- 3:29Speaker 3: will hit both of the games, LCS action and doubleheader
- 3:32Speaker 3: day on FT. So I'm excited about that later. And
- 3:36Speaker 3: now let's hit the full count.
- 3:40Speaker 5: It's a full count.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah, time for full count. It's fueled by marathon. So
- 3:48Speaker 1: What happened?
- 3:49Speaker 3: I mean, we got to start with the guy wearing
- 3:50Speaker 3: the Bryce Terang shirt since that was a pretty big
- 3:52Speaker 3: deal home run. At one point, AJ, I'm thinking back
- 3:56Speaker 3: to last year. Dodgers pitching so incredibly good. And you're like, uh-oh,
- 4:02Speaker 3: are we going to get a run through of the
- 4:03Speaker 3: same thing from last year where the Brewers just can't
- 4:05Speaker 3: scratch a lot of offense together? Well, they didn't scratch
- 4:07Speaker 3: a ton of offense, but they scratched enough and their
- 4:09Speaker 3: pitching is better and they win game one. What are
- 4:12Speaker 3: we thinking about this series now?
- 4:14Speaker 4: Well, I mean, considering I picked the Brewers from before
- 4:17Speaker 4: the playoffs to win this series for the first time,
- 4:19Speaker 4: I wasn't surprised. And then I watched them. This was
- 4:21Speaker 4: the exact script they used to beat the Padres in
- 4:24Speaker 4: the DS. I mean, solid four to five innings with
- 4:28Speaker 4: their starters and solid bullpen. I mean, they use Arriba,
- 4:35Speaker 4: they use Ashby, and then they use McGill. That's in
- 4:39Speaker 4: deal hall when they need deal hall. Those are like
- 4:41Speaker 4: the four guys that they use over and over again.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Miz pitched, you know, Miz did what he did. He
- 4:45Speaker 4: gave him, you know, his innings, and he threw his
- 4:49Speaker 4: 80 to 100 pitches, and then they go to the
- 4:52Speaker 4: same four guys. It's Hall early, Aribe through the pocket
- 4:55Speaker 4: of righties, Ashby through righties and lefties, usually for two innings,
- 5:00Speaker 4: and then McGill for one. So it's their formula. It works. Listen,
- 5:05Speaker 4: I'll say this one thing. That pitch that Scoble threw,
- 5:10Speaker 4: Bryce Serang was not a bad pitch. That was a
- 5:12Speaker 4: sinker running down in. To go left center off that
- 5:14Speaker 4: is pretty impressive. Also, one thing we've said about the Dodgers,
- 5:21Speaker 4: where are they going to get offense from if they
- 5:23Speaker 4: don't hit home runs? They didn't hit any home runs.
- 5:25Speaker 4: They scored one run. That's not a bad line bicycle.
- 5:27Speaker 4: I actually thought he should have gone out for the sixth,
- 5:29Speaker 4: but hey, whatever. But five innings, five hits, two runs,
- 5:33Speaker 4: seven punches. He pitched great. But if your offense only
- 5:36Speaker 4: scores one run, you don't win a lot of playoff
- 5:38Speaker 4: games one-nothing. I'm sorry. That's why everybody loves the homer
- 5:42Speaker 4: in the playoffs, because it's so tough to string anything together.
- 5:45Speaker 4: I give credit to the Brewers, and we're always saying
- 5:47Speaker 4: this because they won, but I give credit to them
- 5:50Speaker 4: because they stuck to their approach. They were chasing balls
- 5:52Speaker 4: in off, and you could see Scoobles, and maybe he
- 5:55Speaker 4: would come on here and tell us it wasn't his approach, but...
- 5:58Speaker 4: He was going to pound everybody in hard with that
- 6:01Speaker 4: fastball and just make them. And the Brewers kept swinging
- 6:05Speaker 4: at it. They were swinging in. So for Terang to
- 6:10Speaker 4: then get that sinker that was inner half and take
- 6:13Speaker 4: it to where he took it on the field, like
- 6:15Speaker 4: that was impressive. But it looked like that was their
- 6:18Speaker 4: approach and they didn't shy away from it. If they
- 6:21Speaker 4: go out there and they get shut out for eight innings,
- 6:23Speaker 4: then you'd be like, well, the Brewers didn't make an
- 6:25Speaker 4: approach or they didn't change their approach. based on what
- 6:28Speaker 4: Scooble did. But he looked like he was going hard
- 6:30Speaker 4: in early, and then it looked like maybe a second
- 6:33Speaker 4: time through, he was thinking, okay, now we're going to
- 6:35Speaker 4: work in the off-speed a little bit more, which he
- 6:38Speaker 4: kind of did. But the strikeouts kind of went down.
- 6:41Speaker 4: So you saw the Brewers hitters learning a little bit
- 6:45Speaker 4: and kind of knocking Scooble out, which, you know what?
- 6:50Speaker 4: You get two against a guy like Scooble, you feel
- 6:52Speaker 4: like that's a win when you have Miz on the
- 6:55Speaker 4: other side, who I thought was got stronger as the
- 6:58Speaker 4: game went on. So it was something that it was,
- 7:01Speaker 4: I mean, it fit the bill. It fit exactly what
- 7:04Speaker 4: we thought it was going to be. A pitcher's duel,
- 7:06Speaker 4: two teams that had to scrape together runs, and when
- 7:08Speaker 4: it's scraping together runs, maybe that's advantage Brewers.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Yeah, Terang hadn't been doing much, too.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Two for 17 before that in the postseason, and apparently
- 7:19Speaker 3: he was working on the swing.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal wrote a good story about it this morning.
- 7:22Speaker 2: What was that?
- 7:23Speaker 4: We had a whole talk about it in game four
- 7:25Speaker 4: of the DS, if you remember. about him going the
- 7:28Speaker 4: other way, and he got to hit the other way,
- 7:30Speaker 4: and then where does Homer go? Left center, right? He's
- 7:33Speaker 4: got to be willing to go the other way. And
- 7:35Speaker 4: what Murph was telling us is that he got really pull-happy.
- 7:38Speaker 4: So he was pull-happy, pull-happy, pull-happy, but we see when
- 7:41Speaker 4: he stays up the middle the other way, man, that
- 7:43Speaker 4: swing slots nicely.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Did you see how rare that home run was too, AJ,
- 7:48Speaker 3: playing to your point? So this year, lefty on lefty,
- 7:53Speaker 3: fastball inner third, two other home runs the entire season,
- 7:58Speaker 3: all of baseball, regular season, the whole deal, and they
- 8:00Speaker 3: were both from Otani.
- 8:01Speaker 1: That's it.
- 8:04Speaker 4: It's a hard pitch to hit.
- 8:06Speaker 1: To go awful, I'm saying, yeah.
- 8:10Speaker 4: It's a hard pitch to hit for power. But what
- 8:13Speaker 4: happens is that approach enables your bat to stay through
- 8:17Speaker 4: the zone and not roll over on balls. So that's
- 8:21Speaker 4: the approach. if you're saying, okay, I'm going to stay
- 8:24Speaker 4: inside this pitch if he throws it into me, it's
- 8:26Speaker 4: probably going to be a single, but most likely what
- 8:29Speaker 4: ends up happening is you stay on that off-speed pitch.
- 8:32Speaker 4: You stay through the ball and you're going to drive
- 8:35Speaker 4: it to center instead of left center. If you're trying
- 8:39Speaker 4: to pull that ball, you're cooked on everything else and
- 8:42Speaker 4: maybe it runs into your bat and you do keep
- 8:45Speaker 4: it fair pulling it to right field as a left.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, we saw Otani do it twice this year.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Otani's amazing. Otani is not Otani, though, right now. He's
- 8:54Speaker 3: trying to switch who he is right now just to
- 8:56Speaker 3: get himself on base.
- 8:59Speaker 4: No, he doesn't even look right. I think Joe Davis
- 9:03Speaker 4: said he's a singles hitter. You know, he's a slap.
- 9:07Speaker 4: What do you call him, a slap hitter now? I mean,
- 9:09Speaker 4: that's what he looks like. It doesn't even look like
- 9:11Speaker 4: he's trying to do any damage. And when he does
- 9:14Speaker 4: do damage, he's swinging at pitches that are out of
- 9:15Speaker 4: the strike zone and he's been chasing. So It's a
- 9:18Speaker 4: different lineup. I mean, again, Freddie hit the home runs
- 9:22Speaker 4: against Atlanta. He hadn't hit a home run in over
- 9:24Speaker 4: a month. Mookie looks better. Mookie looks more like the
- 9:28Speaker 4: old Mookie used to look. Muncie does what Muncie does.
- 9:31Speaker 4: I mean, Muncie got the one hit off Uribe, but
- 9:35Speaker 4: he's going to strike out. He's going to walk. He's
- 9:37Speaker 4: going to give you good at-bats. Kike hit into the
- 9:39Speaker 4: huge double play. Let's not forget about that in the
- 9:41Speaker 4: second inning. They had a chance to put a big
- 9:43Speaker 4: number on the board. And Kike hit into that double play,
- 9:46Speaker 4: which was really well turned by the Brewers. One of
- 9:49Speaker 4: the best double plays you'll see, Brewers fans. Ha-ha. Gotcha.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Y'all know what I'm talking about. But it was a
- 9:55Speaker 4: really good double play turn. And then after that, there was...
- 10:00Speaker 4: really a lot of chances for the Dodgers. I mean,
- 10:02Speaker 4: they had first and third. Otani, after Max got the hit,
- 10:05Speaker 4: it was first and third. But other than that, there
- 10:06Speaker 4: wasn't a lot of chances. They didn't put a lot
- 10:08Speaker 4: of pressure on the Brewers. The Brewers, how'd they get
- 10:11Speaker 4: the run? The Terang home run. And then what do
- 10:13Speaker 4: they do? Cooper, Pratt, Bunt. Luis Lara, first pitch. He's aggressive.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Base it up the middle. Tight turnaround around third. Brewers
- 10:21Speaker 4: take a 2-1 lead and then their bullpen closed it out.
- 10:24Speaker 4: This is what the Brewers want to do. This is
- 10:27Speaker 4: how they want to play the game. Keep you in
- 10:28Speaker 4: the park. Make you string together hits. Play really good
- 10:31Speaker 4: defense and get timely hitting. That's what they've done so
- 10:34Speaker 4: far this postseason and all year. I know they lost
- 10:38Speaker 4: and they only scored one run, but I felt like
- 10:40Speaker 4: the Dodgers at-bats as a whole were better than the
- 10:45Speaker 4: Brewers at-bats. They had the same team approach. I think
- 10:48Speaker 4: the difference is, and you saw it in the eighth
- 10:52Speaker 4: inning against Tanner Scott, where I think the Dodgers, they
- 10:57Speaker 4: navigated intentional walk and they kept navigating with the way
- 11:01Speaker 4: that they put Tanner Scott out there, navigated with open
- 11:05Speaker 4: bases to the weaker spots of their lineup. So for
- 11:08Speaker 4: the Brewers to continue to be successful in this series
- 11:12Speaker 4: and score, To me, I think it's got to be
- 11:15Speaker 4: Lara that gets the hit. It's got to be Garrett Mitchell.
- 11:17Speaker 4: It's got to be Joey Ortiz if he's in there.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Those guys have to get the hits because they're going
- 11:21Speaker 4: to keep giving them opportunities before they are the other guys.
- 11:25Speaker 4: The part with the Dodgers is does Will Smith move
- 11:29Speaker 4: out of that four slot? Does Will Smith's struggles make
- 11:34Speaker 4: Dave Roberts say, maybe I'm going to move him out
- 11:38Speaker 4: of this slot because if you have that in the
- 11:42Speaker 4: key part of your lineup– Is that going to change
- 11:45Speaker 4: where Dave Roberts has him? But I did see Will
- 11:48Speaker 4: Smith take a few balls to right field, so he's
- 11:51Speaker 4: talking about staying inside the ball. Maybe he's starting to
- 11:54Speaker 4: try to come out of it. But these series, postseason,
- 11:57Speaker 4: it happens quick. You go down three games or something,
- 12:01Speaker 4: you don't have time to necessarily always work it out. Hey,
- 12:07Speaker 4: enough key in the Foul Territory Network. We have so

- 13:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:08Speaker 3: And game two is going to be awesome. Henderson against Yamamoto.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Looking forward to that. I want to finish this part
- 13:13Speaker 3: of the conversation with a question about something that could
- 13:16Speaker 3: come up later on in the series. AJ, you watched
- 13:19Speaker 3: Miz last round against the Padres. They fouled off a
- 13:21Speaker 3: ton of pitches. He didn't last as deep as they
- 13:24Speaker 3: would like him to last. It pretty much happened again.
- 13:27Speaker 3: And then there's a lot of chatter online, like do
- 13:28Speaker 3: the Dodgers have their pitches? Does the league have his pitches?
- 13:32Speaker 3: Is there some type of tip in the second inning there?
- 13:34Speaker 3: You saw some movement from Pajes, no?
- 13:38Speaker 4: I don't think so. Here's what I think happened. Again,
- 13:40Speaker 4: if you watch game one of the NLDS, Wano and
- 13:42Speaker 4: I talked about this. They were in the Padres did
- 13:45Speaker 4: this unbelievably well. And I think Miz tried to make
- 13:49Speaker 4: an adjustment early in this game. Like he was throwing heater, heater, heater,
- 13:52Speaker 4: heater last night. First inning. If you watch, he threw
- 13:55Speaker 4: almost exclusively heaters till he got to Will Smith. I
- 13:58Speaker 4: think he went three to break or he struck him
- 14:01Speaker 4: out on a curveball or whatever slider, whatever that was.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Right.
- 14:03Speaker 4: But before that had been fastball, fastball, fastball. If you
- 14:06Speaker 4: watch what the Padres did and they had a plan,
- 14:09Speaker 4: the Padres plan was we're going to hit the slider cutter,
- 14:12Speaker 4: which is 92 to 96, right? Which is normal speed.
- 14:17Speaker 4: We're going to try and foul off the heater. They
- 14:18Speaker 4: did an unbelievable job. They didn't hit a lot of heaters.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Every hit they got in that game was the 92
- 14:23Speaker 4: to 96 because one, there's a couple of things. One,
- 14:25Speaker 4: he usually throws it for a strike. It's usually closer
- 14:27Speaker 4: to the strike zone, especially to the lefties and the
- 14:30Speaker 4: heater is They're like, he's throwing at 103. We can't
- 14:33Speaker 4: hit it anyways with this extension. We'll just try to
- 14:36Speaker 4: fight that off, and we'll wait for him to make
- 14:38Speaker 4: a mistake in the zone with one of the more
- 14:40Speaker 4: average pitches. When he threw the slower curveball is when
- 14:44Speaker 4: he got the swings and misses, and they looked like
- 14:46Speaker 4: they were screwing themselves in the dirt. I thought the
- 14:48Speaker 4: Dodgers plan was very similar. Now, Freddie got a hit
- 14:51Speaker 4: in the first inning. He kind of doinked that one
- 14:52Speaker 4: to left field, right, on a fastball up. Freddie can
- 14:55Speaker 4: do that because that's his approach, right? But a lot
- 14:57Speaker 4: of the other guys can't. So what did they do?
- 14:59Speaker 4: It looked like they all went back to the same thing,
- 15:01Speaker 4: and he attacked them with fastballs. He attacked Mookie with
- 15:04Speaker 4: a fastball. He attacked Freddie with a fastball. He attacked
- 15:07Speaker 4: Will Smith with fastballs. He attacked everybody with these 100, 101, 102, 103, 104,
- 15:13Speaker 4: whatever it was. And then finally when he needed that
- 15:14Speaker 4: last out, he went slider to put them away. So
- 15:17Speaker 4: I thought Miz was trying to make an adjustment, and
- 15:19Speaker 4: as the game went, you kind of saw the same
- 15:21Speaker 4: thing play out. There was just a ton of foul
- 15:23Speaker 4: balls because it's so hard to square them up, and
- 15:25Speaker 4: the differences in the postseason– And I think crowds will
- 15:27Speaker 4: agree with me on this. Guys really lock into every
- 15:30Speaker 4: at bat. There's no just like giving it away in
- 15:33Speaker 4: a bat. It is full go, full send. I am
- 15:35Speaker 4: locking in. I am not giving up this out. And
- 15:38Speaker 4: I think that's what the Dodgers did a really good
- 15:40Speaker 4: job of. That's what the Padres did a really good
- 15:42Speaker 4: job of. And you can run guys that strike out
- 15:44Speaker 4: a lot of guys and they have to rely on
- 15:48Speaker 4: not getting those foul balls. You're facing the best lineups.
- 15:51Speaker 4: They're better than when you face Sorry, I'm going to
- 15:54Speaker 4: use the Colorado Rockies, right? They had the worst record
- 15:56Speaker 4: in baseball. You can go 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 against the
- 16:00Speaker 4: 7-8-9 guys. Look who hits eight for the Dodgers. Kyle Tucker.
- 16:04Speaker 4: He's pretty damn good, guys. He signed for a huge contract.
- 16:07Speaker 4: He can hit, right? The Padres, they had like Cronenworth
- 16:10Speaker 4: down there in the bottom of the order. Camposano or Salas,
- 16:13Speaker 4: whoever hit for them, right? These are all dudes that
- 16:15Speaker 4: can do stuff. So you're going to have harder at-bats.
- 16:18Speaker 4: That's why I think Miz, hey, they got what they
- 16:20Speaker 4: got out of Miz, four and a third. Hey, great ovation.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Bring in D.O.
- 16:23Speaker 5: Hall.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Get out of it. And then we go to our
- 16:25Speaker 4: three-headed monster and close this game down. So I don't
- 16:27Speaker 4: think it was anything Miz was doing. I just think
- 16:29Speaker 4: it's an approach thing that these really good teams can
- 16:31Speaker 4: pull off. really good teams that make adjustments in the playoffs.
- 16:36Speaker 4: We've said this all the time, ever since Max even
- 16:38Speaker 4: said it. Like, they made an adjustment From the regular
- 16:43Speaker 4: season where everyone's like, oh, the home run is, we're
- 16:45Speaker 4: going bushes. Well, against Miz, that's when he racks up 10,
- 16:50Speaker 4: 15 strikeouts, when dudes are just swinging for the fences.
- 16:52Speaker 4: They battled last night. And they didn't just battle like 1, 3,
- 16:57Speaker 4: 7 in the order. Every one of those dudes battled.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Every one of those dudes was not trying to do
- 17:02Speaker 4: too much. Did they come out on the losing end? Absolutely.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Did they have incredible team at-bats? Absolutely. Absolutely. And that
- 17:10Speaker 4: is why they were able to get Miz out of
- 17:12Speaker 4: the game before the fifth.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Fun one.
- 17:16Speaker 3: If you like ball, that was a fun one. Yeah,
- 17:19Speaker 3: there wasn't a ton of offense, but there was a lot.
- 17:20Speaker 3: There was a lot of strategy, the whole deal.
- 17:22Speaker 1: So it was fun. The intentional walks.
- 17:25Speaker 4: When do you take guys out? Who do you trust
- 17:28Speaker 4: to get in a big out? Who's going to make
- 17:30Speaker 4: the play on defense? The bunt. I mean, there was
- 17:33Speaker 4: a lot of things that went into this game. I
- 17:35Speaker 4: know it was two to one. But it was a
- 17:37Speaker 4: well-played game. There wasn't a lot of mistakes in this game.
- 17:39Speaker 4: Base running, stealing bases. I mean, this was a baseball game,
- 17:42Speaker 4: and it was well-played by both teams. The Brewers got
- 17:45Speaker 4: the hit when they needed it. The Dodgers did not. Again,
- 17:47Speaker 4: the second inning, the Dodgers had a chance. Base loaded,
- 17:50Speaker 4: one out. Miz is kind of all over the place.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Here's your shot. Kike hits the double play. They never
- 17:55Speaker 4: really recovered.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Yeah, Dodgers left nine on base. They have a bad,
- 17:59Speaker 3: bad look with runners in tournament position so far.
- 18:02Speaker 4: This is the Padres. This was the Padres game all over.
- 18:05Speaker 4: This was literally the Padres. How many they left? 11
- 18:09Speaker 4: on in game one and lost 3-2, right? The Dodgers
- 18:11Speaker 4: lost 2-1. Big home run, right? It was Contreras. This
- 18:14Speaker 4: time it was Bryce. Like, this is game one of
- 18:16Speaker 4: the NLDS that we just watched with the Padres play
- 18:19Speaker 4: out again in front of our eyes. This is the
- 18:21Speaker 4: way the Brewers play, and this is the way they're
- 18:23Speaker 4: going to win.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Good ball talk there, and that's full count, and that's
- 18:27Speaker 3: fueled by Marathons. where fun runs on full. Save up
- 18:31Speaker 3: to $ 1 a gallon with marathon rewards. Bob Nightingale is
- 18:35Speaker 3: going to tell us a little bit more about the NLCS.
- 18:37Speaker 2: He's there.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Nightingale's Notes presented by the Fox One app. USA Today's
- 18:49Speaker 3: Bob Nightingale joining us, FT Insider, right now, and he's
- 18:52Speaker 3: covering the NLCS. Bob, great to have you on here
- 18:54Speaker 3: and talk shop. So we haven't talked to you since
- 18:57Speaker 3: we found out what this Final Four looks like. What
- 18:59Speaker 3: do you think about the final four teams remaining in
- 19:03Speaker 3: a season that is about to enter one of the
- 19:05Speaker 3: most fierce CBA lockout battles in the game's history, I think?
- 19:11Speaker 5: Yeah, it's fascinating. It's almost a union's dream, the fact
- 19:14Speaker 5: that it could be Tampa Bay and Milwaukee. I was
- 19:17Speaker 5: teasing Bruce Meyer about that yesterday. He goes, I'm neutral,
- 19:20Speaker 5: I'm neutral. And I just started laughing. But to piggyback
- 19:23Speaker 5: what you guys were talking about, the two teams who
- 19:26Speaker 5: have the most scouts in all baseball, pro scouts, Tampa
- 19:29Speaker 5: Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers so they got analytics
- 19:33Speaker 5: but you also have more scouts and and the other
- 19:35Speaker 5: teams in baseball.
- 19:37Speaker 4: Bob by the way I forget who said this I
- 19:39Speaker 4: and I'm not and I'm not I'm not gonna I'm
- 19:41Speaker 4: gonna take credit for it even though I didn't come
- 19:43Speaker 4: up with the line but only Rob Manfred could get
- 19:45Speaker 4: the players association to tell the fans that hey it's
- 19:49Speaker 4: a good thing when teams don't spend money. Look how
- 19:52Speaker 4: good these three low payroll teams are. So maybe this
- 19:54Speaker 4: is exactly what Rob wanted at the end of the
- 19:57Speaker 4: day because now he's got the Players Association. See, we
- 20:00Speaker 4: told you guys you don't have to spend money to win.
- 20:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I was teasing that with the Brewers owner, Mark Antonacio.
- 20:07Speaker 5: I'd say it. You're the union's best friend and the
- 20:09Speaker 5: worst nightmare. Best friend, obviously, a small market team going
- 20:12Speaker 5: to the World Series or at least in the LCS.
- 20:15Speaker 5: And the worst nightmare, just like you said, AJ, you
- 20:17Speaker 5: don't have to spend money to win.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Agreed. Bob, you're there. Let's get off that because we're
- 20:25Speaker 4: going to have months and months and months of talking
- 20:27Speaker 4: about that. You're there. What was the atmosphere last night?
- 20:30Speaker 4: I mean, I know when I was there for the DS,
- 20:31Speaker 4: it was incredible. I saw you in San Diego. You
- 20:34Speaker 4: didn't speak to me on the street. It's cool, Bob.
- 20:36Speaker 4: It's cool. You walked right past me. I, I waved
- 20:38Speaker 4: to you and yelled at you, but it's cool. But
- 20:40Speaker 4: what was the atmosphere like in Milwaukee last night? A
- 20:42Speaker 4: lot of, a lot of yellow towels.
- 20:45Speaker 5: Well, you know, they had a Packer game at noon.
- 20:47Speaker 5: So everybody in Milwaukee is dying hard.
- 20:49Speaker 4: Let's not talk about that, Bob. We don't want to
- 20:51Speaker 4: talk about that game. We forgot that game happened.
- 20:54Speaker 5: So, so they humiliate the bears. So they've been tailgating
- 20:59Speaker 5: for four hours before game time. So we think that
- 21:01Speaker 5: atmosphere was like, what's unbelievable. So, yeah, it was a
- 21:05Speaker 5: Wisconsin dream with a Packer win and a Brewer win. So,
- 21:09Speaker 5: particularly when they took the lead 2-1, then it was just,
- 21:13Speaker 5: they were on their feet pretty much the whole game. Great,
- 21:15Speaker 5: great atmosphere.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Was there the feeling around the stadium, even after the
- 21:20Speaker 4: Packers win, you know, everyone's kind of up in hype,
- 21:23Speaker 4: you know, about 30 minutes before the game, they know
- 21:26Speaker 4: that that was the outcome. Was there still a little
- 21:29Speaker 4: trepidation because of what McGill said post-game? He was like, well...
- 21:34Speaker 4: At least there's not going to be a sweep.
- 21:36Speaker 5: Yeah, it was funny the way you said that. The
- 21:39Speaker 5: thing is, though, I think they knew that they had
- 21:41Speaker 5: to win game one of Mizorowski. I don't think the
- 21:44Speaker 5: Brewers can afford to lose a game that Mizorowski starts.
- 21:47Speaker 5: And if they had lost that game, I think there
- 21:50Speaker 5: would have been kind of a dread, like, uh-oh, then
- 21:52Speaker 5: we have to win game two or it's over. So
- 21:54Speaker 5: now they can breathe a little bit easier. So there
- 21:56Speaker 5: was pressure on them for sure. And game one meant
- 21:59Speaker 5: a lot more to Milwaukee than it did for the Dodgers.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Did the Milwaukee Brewers look like the better team? Even,
- 22:07Speaker 4: you know, if they won or did the Dodgers, even
- 22:10Speaker 4: though they lost, still look like the better team when
- 22:13Speaker 4: you watch at-bats, when you watch who they're going to
- 22:15Speaker 4: pull out of the bullpen, watch who they're going to
- 22:17Speaker 4: start each night of this series?
- 22:20Speaker 5: Well, they certainly have the stars. Even, you know, Otani
- 22:23Speaker 5: can still hurt you. He hasn't done much yet. Tucker, obviously,
- 22:27Speaker 5: is still a great player hitting at the lineup. But
- 22:31Speaker 5: Brewers are such a complete game. I mean, there's so
- 22:33Speaker 5: many former players I talk to, Hall of Fame players,
- 22:37Speaker 5: that are pulling for the Brewers because they play the
- 22:39Speaker 5: game right. They play it hard. They hustle. I mean,
- 22:43Speaker 5: I love the fact that Murphy, Pat Murphy, has taken
- 22:45Speaker 5: out five or six players this year right out of
- 22:48Speaker 5: the game for not hustling. Particularly, you know, they win
- 22:51Speaker 5: their first game of the season, big milestone, and he
- 22:54Speaker 5: yanks their all-star catcher, you know, William Contreras, out of
- 22:57Speaker 5: the game for not running the first base. So they
- 23:00Speaker 5: play the game the way it's supposed to be. And even,
- 23:02Speaker 5: you know, Dave Roberts and Dodgers allude to that as well.
- 23:05Speaker 4: Listen, the Dodgers play it right, too. They got a
- 23:08Speaker 4: lot of guys on that team. I mean, I know
- 23:10Speaker 4: people like to say the Brewers play it right because
- 23:12Speaker 4: of this and that. Freddie Freeman ain't letting a guy
- 23:14Speaker 4: get away with it. Remember, he called out Ronald Acuna.
- 23:17Speaker 4: That's why Ronald Acuna hates him. and said comments where
- 23:20Speaker 4: Freddie called him out. Mookie, I know, will call guys out.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Max will call guys out. They have a bunch of
- 23:25Speaker 4: guys that– I hate that narrative, the Brewers play the
- 23:28Speaker 4: game right. The Dodgers play it right also. They just
- 23:31Speaker 4: have bigger names, so people look at them and say, oh,
- 23:33Speaker 4: they don't do the right stuff. They do. They just
- 23:36Speaker 4: do it at a different level. So let's kill that narrative, please, Bob,
- 23:40Speaker 4: before that gets out there. Oh, you know, everyone's saying, oh,
- 23:42Speaker 4: the Dodgers do it right too. So let's also throw
- 23:45Speaker 4: that out there. They do.
- 23:46Speaker 5: And don't forget Miguel Rojas called out Jazz Chisholm in Miami,
- 23:49Speaker 5: and they still haven't.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Spoken to Chisholm. No, it wasn't Miggy's fault, though. Remember,
- 23:54Speaker 4: it was all– it was Jazz hates Miggy's a bad guy.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Let's not forget that.
- 23:58Speaker 5: Right.
- 23:59Speaker 4: Let's not forget that. So what's the plan going forward?
- 24:02Speaker 4: We know Logan Henderson game two for the Brewers and
- 24:05Speaker 4: Yamamoto game two. Is it going to be Snell game
- 24:08Speaker 4: three and Gasser game three? Or how is the game
- 24:12Speaker 4: three and game four pitching matchup going to line up?
- 24:15Speaker 5: No, you're exactly right. Yeah, Gasser already spoke today, so
- 24:19Speaker 5: he's definitely game three, going back to Southern California, where
- 24:22Speaker 5: he's from. Used to be an A's fan, obviously. And
- 24:27Speaker 5: then also Blake Snell for game three, and last night
- 24:29Speaker 5: for game four. So this is a big game, too,
- 24:33Speaker 5: for the Brewers. You know, Logan Henderson, they're 10-0 in
- 24:38Speaker 5: his career starts at the American Family Field, 8-0 this season.
- 24:44Speaker 5: for him, Tenno as a team. So very confident and
- 24:47Speaker 5: comfortable with him, too. But, of course, Yamamoto was just
- 24:50Speaker 5: on a different level. I mean, no one's pitching like
- 24:52Speaker 5: this guy come postseason time.
- 24:55Speaker 4: I felt like last night was a must-win, and you
- 24:57Speaker 4: even alluded to it when you said that about the
- 24:59Speaker 4: Brewers last night with Miz on the mound. Is this
- 25:03Speaker 4: a must-win for the Dodgers because they now have their
- 25:07Speaker 4: MVP on the mound?
- 25:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I think you're right in the sense that certainly
- 25:12Speaker 5: a lot more pressure than Dodgers. I mean, Yamamoto has been,
- 25:15Speaker 5: you know, unconscious. I couldn't believe that stat the other
- 25:18Speaker 5: day where Yamamoto's 33-0, again, three runs of support or more.
- 25:23Speaker 5: That's just staggering. But, yeah, I think it is because
- 25:26Speaker 5: it's a big drop-off. As good as Blake Snell is
- 25:29Speaker 5: and Tyler Glasnow are, they don't compare to Yamamoto. Yamamoto
- 25:33Speaker 5: is one of the best clutch pitchers we've seen in years.
- 25:37Speaker 5: So I do think it's more pressure on the Dodgers
- 25:40Speaker 5: to win this game and not go back 0-2 to California.
- 25:43Speaker 4: Three runs is tough against the Brewers pitching staff, no
- 25:47Speaker 4: matter who's out there, Henderson or anybody. But my question is, Otani,
- 25:53Speaker 4: in that lineup, you said three runs. When you are
- 25:56Speaker 4: at the game and you watch him play, I'm only
- 25:58Speaker 4: watching it on TV, something looks off. And maybe that's
- 26:02Speaker 4: because I know he's struggling, blah, blah, blah. But his
- 26:05Speaker 4: swing doesn't look connected. Is there any answers or answers
- 26:08Speaker 4: to questions of what he's doing to change it? Because
- 26:12Speaker 4: I saw a video of him actually hitting on the field.
- 26:15Speaker 4: So you know there's something going on because he usually
- 26:17Speaker 4: hits in the cage.
- 26:19Speaker 5: Yeah, I did that last night too. He hit in
- 26:21Speaker 5: the field, practiced his swing, sitting on the bucket. I
- 26:26Speaker 5: wouldn't be surprised at all when the season's over. that
- 26:29Speaker 5: we read that Otani underwent surgery for a knee or something.
- 26:32Speaker 5: He doesn't look right. You know, he's hitting, you know, singles,
- 26:37Speaker 5: opposite field singles, that sort of thing. Just the power
- 26:40Speaker 5: is not there. You know, it almost looked like he
- 26:42Speaker 5: pitched around Will Smith last night to get to Otani.
- 26:46Speaker 5: You know, as crazy as that sounds, you know, Will
- 26:48Speaker 5: Smith's been struggling too. But yeah, he does not seem right.
- 26:52Speaker 5: I think something's bothering him physically.
- 26:57Speaker 4: That's fair. That's fair, Bob. That's fair, Bob. It's obvious.
- 27:01Speaker 4: It's obvious. Like they said on the broadcast, Joe Davis
- 27:03Speaker 4: called him a slap hitter. When do you think Joe
- 27:05Speaker 4: Davis would ever call Otani a slap hitter in your life? So,
- 27:09Speaker 4: all right, let's, can we talk about some other things
- 27:10Speaker 4: besides the NLCS?
- 27:11Speaker 5: Sure, go ahead.
- 27:14Speaker 4: Okay. What do you think of the 154 game schedule?
- 27:16Speaker 4: Do you think that is a reality and where they'll
- 27:18Speaker 4: give each team an off day once a week and
- 27:22Speaker 4: You know, then they can go six-man rotation like they
- 27:24Speaker 4: do in the minor leagues? Because my biggest thing with this, Bob,
- 27:27Speaker 4: is so every team is going to have Monday off,
- 27:29Speaker 4: or if they don't have Monday off, then they get
- 27:31Speaker 4: Thursday off, and they're going to have to– there's a
- 27:33Speaker 4: lot of moving parts in this, right? Because you're going
- 27:36Speaker 4: to have– are you going to have days where there's
- 27:37Speaker 4: no games? Because fans hate that, like they do in
- 27:39Speaker 4: the minor leagues. Monday there's no games. So we're going
- 27:41Speaker 4: to go every Monday and just say, hey, there's no
- 27:43Speaker 4: Major League Baseball. Even though it's the only sport happening
- 27:45Speaker 4: right now, guys, everybody take Monday off to ignore it.
- 27:50Speaker 5: Yeah, it's interesting. I remember back in the day when
- 27:52Speaker 5: Bud Sealy was commissioner, he would actually ask the owners,
- 27:55Speaker 5: how about a 154-game schedule? And nobody wanted it because
- 27:58Speaker 5: they didn't want to lose eight dates, four home games,
- 28:01Speaker 5: want to lose a TV, many. The players didn't want
- 28:03Speaker 5: to lose a salary. So now MLB is telling the players,
- 28:06Speaker 5: you get to keep your same salary. We'll prorate the
- 28:10Speaker 5: bonuses and everything else. The union's not so sure. They say, okay,
- 28:14Speaker 5: we won't lose money now. Will we lose money in
- 28:17Speaker 5: the future? It's almost hard. They're hard to believe that
- 28:20Speaker 5: we're going to get paid for playing eight games less.
- 28:23Speaker 5: The one thing I don't like, and I brought this
- 28:25Speaker 5: up to Bruce Meyer yesterday, is that it affects records.
- 28:29Speaker 5: If you play eight pure games, does that mean that
- 28:32Speaker 5: no one in the world will ever break Barry Bond's
- 28:34Speaker 5: record for 73 homers? Are we going to have pure
- 28:37Speaker 5: 20-game winners? Things like that. The sport's based so much
- 28:42Speaker 5: on history, you kind of hate to see it go
- 28:44Speaker 5: downsize where now records will never be broken.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Can there be an explanation for this? Are they saying, well,
- 28:51Speaker 4: eight less games, players' health is definitely going to increase,
- 28:54Speaker 4: which is the biggest loss for owners anyway. So really,
- 28:57Speaker 4: it's the owners trying to make more money with the
- 29:01Speaker 4: players that they have on the field. Is there a
- 29:04Speaker 4: true reason for this? Because the players can't really argue
- 29:06Speaker 4: it if they're like, well, we'd love to have less
- 29:08Speaker 4: games but still get paid the same.
- 29:11Speaker 5: No, I think if it wasn't tied to the salary cap,
- 29:14Speaker 5: I think the players would be all in. Hey, less work,
- 29:16Speaker 5: same pay. You just got to have that trust. It'll
- 29:19Speaker 5: be the same pay, you know, five years from now
- 29:21Speaker 5: and owners won't say, hey, wait a minute now, you're
- 29:23Speaker 5: playing less games now. We're going to try to reduce
- 29:25Speaker 5: your salary in the future. So, no, I think the
- 29:28Speaker 5: players are all for this thing, but it all is
- 29:31Speaker 5: tied to the salary cap. And the owners will still
- 29:34Speaker 5: get their money anyway because they're talking about expanding the
- 29:37Speaker 5: division series to seven games so they won't lose that
- 29:40Speaker 5: TV revenue by having eight fewer games.
- 29:44Speaker 4: And also the arbitration, pre-arbitration guys will never accumulate the
- 29:48Speaker 4: same numbers. Sorry, that guy had two less homers than
- 29:51Speaker 4: this other guy, so that'll keep arbitration numbers down. All
- 29:55Speaker 4: that stuff.
- 29:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's why Union didn't say, oh, yeah,
- 29:59Speaker 5: we're all in on this. They're like, let's see. Let's
- 30:01Speaker 5: evaluate this. Let's talk about it. So they still haven't
- 30:04Speaker 5: rendered an opinion on that. Bruce Meyer said he hasn't
- 30:08Speaker 5: even talked to the players about that yet. So they'll
- 30:10Speaker 5: be under discussion to see what could happen. What you
- 30:15Speaker 5: bring up, it could affect what the players say. You
- 30:18Speaker 5: know what? There's something fishy about this. We'll keep it
- 30:22Speaker 5: at 162.
- 30:22Speaker 4: All right, but with that, The teams get to choose
- 30:26Speaker 4: who their next opponent is. Are you in for that?
- 30:29Speaker 4: Are you out for that? Is it going to give
- 30:31Speaker 4: you enough drama to write about, Bob?
- 30:35Speaker 5: I'm kind of out for that. I'm not crazy about that.
- 30:38Speaker 5: Then you're embarrassing the other team. They're going to be
- 30:41Speaker 5: all fired up. Are you going to write about, hey,
- 30:43Speaker 5: they dissed you. They think so little of you. I
- 30:46Speaker 5: don't like that. I think it's too much like a
- 30:47Speaker 5: big game show. It's almost like we're already doing that
- 30:51Speaker 5: now with the draft lottery. You know, everybody fills up
- 30:54Speaker 5: in the room and the ping pong balls are jumping around. Yeah,
- 30:57Speaker 5: I don't care for it.
- 30:59Speaker 4: Bob, I'm so disappointed. I never thought you'd say this, Bob. Yes,
- 31:03Speaker 4: we're here for this. Think how many good articles you
- 31:06Speaker 4: can write when the lower seed that they got picked
- 31:08Speaker 4: and they beat the up higher seed because this isn't.
- 31:11Speaker 4: like other sports where you're guaranteed to beat if you're
- 31:14Speaker 4: the lower or higher seed. You can actually win these
- 31:16Speaker 4: series if you have like a right pitcher or two
- 31:19Speaker 4: get hot or a guy hits a couple homers. Bob,
- 31:21Speaker 4: think how many good stories you could write in USA
- 31:23Speaker 4: Today about, oh, the little Brewers beat the crap out
- 31:27Speaker 4: of the Dodgers after they picked the Dodgers, picked the
- 31:29Speaker 4: Brewers to play instead of picking the Padres. Think about that.
- 31:33Speaker 4: You know, like, oh, man, it would be epic, Bob,
- 31:36Speaker 4: the stories we could have.
- 31:38Speaker 5: How about just reseeding? Let's make it easier. Just reseeding.
- 31:40Speaker 5: That's all we need to do. Because, you know, this
- 31:43Speaker 5: was an embarrassment this year in the American League. Why?
- 31:45Speaker 5: The four top seeds got through.
- 31:47Speaker 4: The four top seeds got through, Bob.
- 31:52Speaker 5: You think Cleveland's better than the Yankees, Boston?
- 31:55Speaker 4: The four top seeds got through, Bob. As mad as
- 31:58Speaker 4: I am about the White Sox. As mad as I
- 32:00Speaker 4: was about the White Sox. The four top seeds got through.
- 32:04Speaker 5: No reseeding. We'll see what would have happened otherwise. Everybody
- 32:08Speaker 5: knew that if you're in that bracket, you got a chance.
- 32:10Speaker 5: You know, the White Sox knew that. Cleveland knew that.
- 32:13Speaker 5: Everybody knew that. Just get through the wild card round.
- 32:16Speaker 5: It's almost like you got to buy, you know, buy
- 32:20Speaker 5: to the ALCS.
- 32:21Speaker 4: Chip in a chair. Chip in a chair. Don't say
- 32:25Speaker 4: that about AJ's White Sox, even though they're in the
- 32:27Speaker 4: Cancun series now.
- 32:28Speaker 5: They're relevant again, AJ. They're relevant again. That's what they say.
- 32:32Speaker 4: They are.
- 32:32Speaker 5: It was a hell of a season.
- 32:35Speaker 4: Yeah, well, they didn't win anything, Bob, so it wasn't
- 32:37Speaker 4: that hell of a season. They didn't win a season. No,
- 32:42Speaker 4: they won a playoff series against one of the worst
- 32:43Speaker 4: playoff teams of all time. Sorry, I love you, Joe Espada,
- 32:46Speaker 4: but it's the truth. I'm sorry.
- 32:50Speaker 5: Top 12 seed, right? Top 12 seed.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Yeah, they were the 12th seed. Out of the 12,
- 32:54Speaker 4: they were the 12th, meaning the Astros, not the White Sox.
- 32:58Speaker 4: But anyways, Bob, the crowd's had a question. No, that's good.
- 33:02Speaker 4: I'm glad you brought up Espada. I mean, can Jim
- 33:05Speaker 4: Crane just leave the guy hanging even longer? Like, is there, like,
- 33:09Speaker 4: how has this process been handled? Is it fair? And
- 33:15Speaker 4: is it something that Joe Espada was given a flawed
- 33:19Speaker 4: roster and still made the playoffs?
- 33:22Speaker 5: I think it's just a simple thing that they're going
- 33:24Speaker 5: to let Espada's contract run out. It probably runs out
- 33:27Speaker 5: October 31st, and then they can say, we didn't fire you,
- 33:30Speaker 5: at least the contract expired, and we're not giving you
- 33:33Speaker 5: a new one. So they haven't started to search yet
- 33:36Speaker 5: for GM. They haven't started to search yet for manager,
- 33:40Speaker 5: but they will. And I think just letting the contract expire,
- 33:43Speaker 5: saying let's take our time on this thing. There's not
- 33:45Speaker 5: that many managerial openings, so we can still get who
- 33:48Speaker 5: we want.
- 33:49Speaker 4: So wait, hold on. So they're not even, do they
- 33:52Speaker 4: talk to them? Do they call them? Do they say, Joe,
- 33:54Speaker 4: you're free to talk to other teams? Or do they
- 33:57Speaker 4: just say, oh, well. Kind of like, okay, I'm going
- 33:59Speaker 4: to use this. This is kind of an example. I
- 34:00Speaker 4: went through this. When I was at the Giants, I
- 34:02Speaker 4: had one great, wonderful year when I loved San Francisco
- 34:05Speaker 4: so much. I knew they were non-tendering me at the
- 34:08Speaker 4: non-tender deadline. And I kept calling them saying, why don't
- 34:11Speaker 4: you just DFA me now a week ahead of time
- 34:15Speaker 4: or two weeks ahead of time. I know you're not
- 34:17Speaker 4: tendering me a contract. Everybody in baseball knows. Can you
- 34:19Speaker 4: just please just DFA me now and that way do
- 34:22Speaker 4: me a favor or whatever. And they're like, no, we
- 34:25Speaker 4: don't know if we're tendering you a contract. We don't know.
- 34:27Speaker 4: We don't know. And then they went out and signed
- 34:28Speaker 4: Mike Matheny, right? And then they said, oh, hey, by
- 34:31Speaker 4: the way, we're going to do you a favor. Like
- 34:34Speaker 4: two days before the non-tender, we're going to DFA you
- 34:37Speaker 4: now because we're doing you a favor, right? So why
- 34:40Speaker 4: can't Jim Crane, or Joe, I'm not bringing you back.
- 34:44Speaker 4: We're going to just tell you now. And you can
- 34:46Speaker 4: get a start trying to find another job in another organization.
- 34:49Speaker 4: I don't understand why you just can't make that phone call.
- 34:52Speaker 4: It just seems like the right thing to do.
- 34:55Speaker 5: Yeah, I just think they're waiting for the end. I
- 34:57Speaker 5: know the coaches have known, hey, you can reach out
- 34:59Speaker 5: to other teams if you want. Go ahead and leave.
- 35:02Speaker 5: Their contracts are up, too. I'm sure if Joe has
- 35:05Speaker 5: fought us and, hey, this team might be interested in me,
- 35:07Speaker 5: whether it's Seattle or somewhere else, go ahead and talk.
- 35:12Speaker 5: I just think because now we're so deep into October,
- 35:15Speaker 5: they're just going to wait until October 31st to roll around,
- 35:17Speaker 5: and you're not going to get a new deal. That
- 35:20Speaker 5: way they don't have to say he's fired. It saves
- 35:22Speaker 5: him phase two. He can tell everybody. I didn't get fired.
- 35:25Speaker 5: They didn't give me a new contract.
- 35:29Speaker 3: And we make sure that we stay fired. It's nothing
- 35:32Speaker 3: to Espada.
- 35:33Speaker 1: I just don't let teams get away with trying to say,
- 35:35Speaker 1: we're parting ways. They resigned. The contract's expired.
- 35:39Speaker 4: Mutual. It's mutual. Mutual. It's always mutual. Mutual parting. Well,
- 35:43Speaker 4: if it's mutual, then why do you leave? Nobody leaves mutually.
- 35:46Speaker 4: Somebody wants out, and then they say, okay, well, we'll
- 35:48Speaker 4: make you look better by saying mutual. No, it's never mutual.
- 35:52Speaker 5: Sorry.
- 35:53Speaker 4: It's not.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:54Speaker 3: We don't have any rules, so we say what people
- 35:56Speaker 3: really want to hear.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Bob, good stuff. Enjoy it out there. I mean, it's
- 36:00Speaker 1: going to be fun.
- 36:01Speaker 3: Watch the rest of the week here on the NLCS side.
- 36:04Speaker 4: Bob, do you have your own knife? Bob, do you
- 36:05Speaker 4: have your own knife?
- 36:06Speaker 5: Oh, you know, I was at the steakhouse the same night.
- 36:10Speaker 5: I love Carnival. It was our two nights in a row.
- 36:12Speaker 5: So I think I used Matt Arnold's knife without realizing it.
- 36:16Speaker 4: Wow. They don't have a Bob Nightingale knife?
- 36:19Speaker 5: If the Brewers keep winning, it's a World Series. I'm
- 36:21Speaker 5: going to keep going back to the same restaurant and
- 36:23Speaker 5: see if they, uh, Homer gives me my own knife.
- 36:26Speaker 4: Wow. I thought for sure by now you'd have one.
- 36:31Speaker 5: A steak 44 in Phoenix. Yeah.
- 36:33Speaker 4: There you go.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Exactly. That's the home field advantage there.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Yup.
- 36:37Speaker 4: Yup.
- 36:38Speaker 2: I like that.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Uh, Bob, good stuff. Have fun out there.
- 36:40Speaker 2: All right.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Eat some good steak.
- 36:42Speaker 4: All right.
- 36:43Speaker 5: Sounds good. Take care guys.
- 36:44Speaker 2: You too.

- 37:15Speaker 1: is yours.
- 37:16Speaker 3: We're going to talk ALCS later on in the show,
- 37:19Speaker 3: but let's finish up ALDS. Guardians down by two games
- 37:23Speaker 3: to none. They go over to the south side of Chicago.
- 37:25Speaker 1: They win both.
- 37:26Speaker 3: They come back to game five in Cleveland. Gavin Williams
- 37:30Speaker 3: on a day of rest after 18 pitches, shoves, and
- 37:33Speaker 3: the offense woke up for Cleveland. I can see you're
- 37:36Speaker 3: a little bit sad and frustrated.
- 37:38Speaker 4: Did it wake up, though? Did it really wake up?
- 37:40Speaker 4: They scored like– Yeah, in the last game, game five,
- 37:44Speaker 4: they hit one home run that was about this high
- 37:46Speaker 4: off the ground. I mean.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Well, in games three and four.
- 37:51Speaker 4: Games three and four, the White Sox helped them out.
- 37:52Speaker 4: There was some walks and there was a lot of
- 37:54Speaker 4: walks and there was some defense that was questionable. And yeah,
- 37:57Speaker 4: they got some hits, but. Sorry, I needed a breather. Yeah. Yeah,
- 38:05Speaker 4: it just didn't go well. And then game four. Listen,
- 38:07Speaker 4: Sean Burke pitched great. He made one mistake. Again, the
- 38:09Speaker 4: ball was about this high off the ground. Is that
- 38:11Speaker 4: a mistake, by the way?
- 38:12Speaker 1: Sorry to interrupt.
- 38:13Speaker 4: No, it wasn't a mistake. That's what I'm saying. The
- 38:15Speaker 4: ball was about this high off the ground. So, no,
- 38:16Speaker 4: it wasn't a mistake. But here's the thing I'll say, okay?
- 38:21Speaker 4: They did the opener. They tried the opener trick. But
- 38:25Speaker 4: if you watch, like, Hagan Smith and you watch Anthony
- 38:27Speaker 4: Kaye and you watch even Sean Newcomb, they pitched four
- 38:31Speaker 4: games in a row. And they had pitched the games
- 38:34Speaker 4: to get them. They looked tired. I'm sorry they looked tired, okay?
- 38:37Speaker 4: But the key to this whole thing, How do you
- 38:42Speaker 4: hit that pitch for a home run? I don't know.
- 38:43Speaker 4: I mean, the only one I can ever remember hitting
- 38:45Speaker 4: like that is Verlander threw me a curveball, and I
- 38:47Speaker 4: did the same thing to him. And he looked like,
- 38:49Speaker 4: how the hell did you hit that pitch? And I
- 38:51Speaker 4: still don't know to this day how I hit it.
- 38:53Speaker 4: But it was about the same height. I don't know
- 38:55Speaker 4: if we didn't have the box back then, but it
- 38:56Speaker 4: would have been about there. I don't know how he
- 38:58Speaker 4: did it. Sometimes you just get lucky. But the bigger
- 39:02Speaker 4: thing to me is, holy strikeouts. Holy F in strikeouts.
- 39:08Speaker 4: How do you– The last game of the year, you
- 39:10Speaker 4: strike out 21 times. That means the Guardians only had
- 39:14Speaker 4: to make six plays in the field the whole game.
- 39:17Speaker 4: Six plays. They struck out 19 times. I can't explain it.
- 39:26Speaker 4: And listen, I know they hit a lot of home
- 39:27Speaker 4: runs and they struck out a lot. But the one
- 39:30Speaker 4: thing the Guardians did is they didn't pitch to Miguel Vargas.
- 39:32Speaker 4: You think he walked nine times in five games? He
- 39:35Speaker 4: hit the one home run off Kate Smith when it
- 39:36Speaker 4: was kind of meaningless, right? Kudos to Gavin Williams for
- 39:39Speaker 4: coming back after throwing the 18 pitches in game four
- 39:42Speaker 4: and shoving. Kudos to the bullpen, Kate Smith, and what
- 39:45Speaker 4: he did and Gattis and Zabrowski and all those guys.
- 39:49Speaker 4: But where the hell was the hitting coaches and the
- 39:51Speaker 4: approach coaches for the White Sox? Sorry. There was one guy. Well,
- 39:55Speaker 4: there was two guys that I thought. Well, three if
- 39:58Speaker 4: you count Vargas who they took out of the last
- 39:59Speaker 4: three games. Sam Antonacci battled his ass off. Chase Mydrop
- 40:03Speaker 4: battled his ass off. Your 3-4 hitters for the White Sox?
- 40:08Speaker 4: I think they hit 3-4. Maybe not. Murakami 0-4-4 punchies.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Andrew Benatendi 0-4-4 punchies. That's eight outs. that your main
- 40:18Speaker 4: middle of your order didn't even put the ball in play.
- 40:21Speaker 4: That can't happen. Unfortunately for the White Sox, people were like, well,
- 40:27Speaker 4: you know what? Gavin Williams was nasty. 100% he was nasty.
- 40:31Speaker 4: But then we went and saw the Miz in his
- 40:34Speaker 4: last two starts get fouled off galore. Teams had team approaches.
- 40:40Speaker 4: I am not asking Murakami to have a team approach
- 40:43Speaker 4: against a guy like Gavin Williams or anybody. He clearly
- 40:47Speaker 4: controls the zone, hits dingers, so that's fine. I'm giving
- 40:51Speaker 4: him a pass. I don't agree with that many strikeouts,
- 40:53Speaker 4: but I'm giving him a pass. You got to see
- 40:56Speaker 4: at-bats like I saw from Tristan Peters, like I saw
- 41:01Speaker 4: from Maidroth. Like, it might not end well, but if
- 41:06Speaker 4: the whole team does it, then Gavin Williams, big truck,
- 41:11Speaker 4: big rig, doesn't make it as far as he does.
- 41:14Speaker 4: He might still get punch-outs. But his pitch count goes up.
- 41:18Speaker 4: It was one, two, three strikes, you're out. One, two, ball,
- 41:21Speaker 4: three strikes, you're out. It was to put it into perspective.
- 41:26Speaker 4: The fact that they put six balls in play is
- 41:30Speaker 4: an astronomical number in a like win or go home
- 41:35Speaker 4: type of situation. To me, it looked like some of
- 41:39Speaker 4: the swings that they were taking, it was like, Well,
- 41:41Speaker 4: if I don't do it, who else is going to
- 41:43Speaker 4: do it? And that is really tough to do in
- 41:47Speaker 4: the big leagues in general, but in the postseason more.
- 41:51Speaker 4: Because when Gavin Williams was tired and got his 98
- 41:54Speaker 4: pitches in, then you're going to Hunter Gaddis. Then you're
- 41:58Speaker 4: going to, I think, Sabrowski came in for one batter.
- 42:01Speaker 4: Then you're going to Cade Smith. So it's time to
- 42:04Speaker 4: be locked in. And I just didn't see that full
- 42:08Speaker 4: team approach by the White Sox. And That's why they're home.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Hey, SeatGeek.
- 42:16Speaker 3: All right, let's actually focus on tonight for a moment,
- 42:18Speaker 3: and we'll have a post-game show after the second one,
- 42:20Speaker 3: so we'll talk about both of these.
- 42:23Speaker 1: You have one ticket, okay?
- 42:25Speaker 3: You want to go to the ALCS Game 1 in.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Tampa, where it was actually really rocking?
- 42:32Speaker 3: Or do you want to go to NLCS Game 2,
- 42:35Speaker 3: where Kratz calls it the World Series before the World Series?
- 42:38Speaker 3: I actually disagree with that take, by the way, Kratz.
- 42:40Speaker 3: I think that Both teams are capable, but really the Rays.
- 42:43Speaker 3: I think if the Rays make it to the World Series,
- 42:46Speaker 3: they are capable of beating either the Dodgers or the Brewers.
- 42:50Speaker 3: I really do feel that way, and I think AJ
- 42:52Speaker 3: feels the same.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Guardians, I don't know. Can the Guardians upset the Rays?
- 42:56Speaker 5: Sure.
- 42:57Speaker 3: I think the Rays are going to win this series,
- 42:58Speaker 3: but AJ, would you like to take a little ticket
- 43:01Speaker 3: on SeatGeek, head over, what, one to three hours, depending
- 43:05Speaker 3: on the causeway traffic, and check out that matchup?
- 43:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:08Speaker 4: I'm just really mad I'm not driving over after the
- 43:10Speaker 4: show today to watch the White Sox play, so I
- 43:12Speaker 4: can't speak on this. I'm mad at the Guardians right now,
- 43:14Speaker 4: which I love the Guardians. I love Jose Ramirez. I
- 43:16Speaker 4: love a lot of their players. I love Steven Vogt. But, yeah,
- 43:20Speaker 4: I'm just mad I'm not driving over there because I
- 43:22Speaker 4: have a lot of friends and family that live in Tampa,
- 43:24Speaker 4: and I could just be talking so much trash to them,
- 43:27Speaker 4: but I can't because the Guardians beat the White Sox. But, yeah, listen.
- 43:32Speaker 4: I don't think it's the World Series. I think because
- 43:34Speaker 4: of Tampa's pitching and because of the top of their
- 43:36Speaker 4: order and the way they play, I think they definitely
- 43:38Speaker 4: have a chance to beat anybody. But I'm going to Tampa. Sorry. Regardless,
- 43:41Speaker 4: I'm going to Tampa. I don't want to have to
- 43:42Speaker 4: get on an airplane and fly anywhere, so I'm going
- 43:44Speaker 4: to Tampa. I can't not be in Milwaukee to see
- 43:49Speaker 4: Yamamoto versus Henderson when it could have been Yamamoto versus
- 43:55Speaker 4: Scooble or Blake Snell versus Scooble. I'm just saying I
- 43:59Speaker 4: got to be in Milwaukee because Milwaukee fans– are still
- 44:04Speaker 4: a little nervous because they know Yamamoto threw that CG
- 44:06Speaker 4: last year against them. And they know they need to
- 44:10Speaker 4: win this game because going back to LA is going
- 44:13Speaker 4: to be tough, especially when Gasser's throwing game three. I
- 44:18Speaker 4: don't know who's throwing game four. So this is a
- 44:22Speaker 4: tough game that the Brewers, in my opinion, really feel
- 44:25Speaker 4: like they need to win. So the energy in that
- 44:27Speaker 4: stadium is going to be off the hook.
- 44:30Speaker 5: Yep.
- 44:31Speaker 3: And if you don't have a ticket... I mean, obviously
- 44:33Speaker 3: it's been sold out for ages. SeatGeek always has tickets
- 44:36Speaker 3: for you, okay? With over 35 million downloads, it's the
- 44:38Speaker 3: number one rated ticketing app and they are MLB's official
- 44:42Speaker 3: ticket marketplace. That means your tickets are fully guaranteed and
- 44:44Speaker 3: instantly fulfilled in your account after purchase.
- 44:47Speaker 1: So go use that code TERRITORY10.
- 44:49Speaker 3: For 10% off tickets on SeatGeek. You can click the
- 44:52Speaker 3: link in the description of this episode on YouTube or
- 44:54Speaker 3: podcast format and then that code gets automatically added to
- 44:57Speaker 3: your account.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Treat yourself.
- 45:04Speaker 3: Eduardo Perez calling the ALCS for ESPN Radio.
- 45:08Speaker 1: Friend of mine. Love listening to you, Eduardo.
- 45:10Speaker 3: Good to see you, man. What do you think in here?
- 45:12Speaker 3: To me, these two teams, the Guardians and Rays, are
- 45:15Speaker 3: old school baseball. I know we talk about how smart
- 45:17Speaker 3: they are, but they have starting pitching and they make contact.
- 45:19Speaker 3: To me, that reminds me of watching ball in the
- 45:21Speaker 3: 80s and 90s.
- 45:23Speaker 2: No kidding. What's up, fellas? First and foremost, enjoy the show. Yeah,
- 45:28Speaker 2: this is really going to be interesting, this series, because
- 45:32Speaker 2: there's a lot of both these teams look alike. They
- 45:39Speaker 2: play alike. The Tampa Bay Rays, they put the ball
- 45:42Speaker 2: in play. They don't depend on the home run. They've
- 45:45Speaker 2: got one guy that is a bona fide home run hitter.
- 45:48Speaker 2: They have two others that are really difficult to face,
- 45:51Speaker 2: and Yandy Diaz and Aranda, but The rest of the guys,
- 45:56Speaker 2: can they be pitched to? And a lot of the
- 45:58Speaker 2: league thinks so. But Kevin Cash manages this team in
- 46:02Speaker 2: Tampa pretty much in two levels. He sees the top
- 46:06Speaker 2: of the order of go do your thing. If you
- 46:09Speaker 2: can hit the ball out, great. But he also has
- 46:12Speaker 2: to manufacture runs in the bottom of the order. And
- 46:14Speaker 2: I think you look at Cleveland and you think the
- 46:16Speaker 2: same thing, right? Jose Ramirez is the epicenter of their offense. 35%
- 46:19Speaker 2: of the runs scored. or he had something to do
- 46:24Speaker 2: with in the three W's that they had. There's going
- 46:27Speaker 2: to be a lot of swing and miss. I think
- 46:29Speaker 2: Drew Rasmussen is a huge game changer in game one.
- 46:33Speaker 2: So we're going to find out if the Tampa Bay
- 46:35Speaker 2: Rays can neutralize Junior Caminero like they did during the
- 46:40Speaker 2: regular season. One of two teams where he wasn't able
- 46:43Speaker 2: to really hit the ball out of the ballpark and
- 46:45Speaker 2: do some damage against.
- 46:47Speaker 4: Which manager? You brought up the managers. Which manager is
- 46:50Speaker 4: going to have to I don't know, create more magic.
- 46:55Speaker 4: Kevin Cash or Steven Vogt?
- 46:57Speaker 2: Steven Vogt. I think he has to create more magic. One,
- 47:00Speaker 2: you're starting with Foster Griffin out there, and I get it.
- 47:04Speaker 2: He's a veteran guy, even though he's known as a rookie.
- 47:07Speaker 2: But Steven, I wouldn't even be surprised if Tampa Bay
- 47:11Speaker 2: goes out and blows them out in game one. And
- 47:14Speaker 2: Cleveland sort of just resets. This is a best of seven,
- 47:18Speaker 2: not a best of five anymore. It was a grind
- 47:21Speaker 2: against the White Sox. I don't know how they pulled
- 47:24Speaker 2: that one off, and it was due to the pitching
- 47:27Speaker 2: and the swing and miss. But he's going to need
- 47:30Speaker 2: all of his staff, and that includes the bullpen, who
- 47:33Speaker 2: played a huge part in the games against the White
- 47:36Speaker 2: Sox in games 3, 4, and 5. I wonder how
- 47:40Speaker 2: exhausted they are. And sometimes it's better to have one
- 47:44Speaker 2: game and see what Foster Griffins can do and go
- 47:47Speaker 2: from there, but Drew Rasmussen, he's been pretty much unhittable
- 47:51Speaker 2: in the second half of the season, and the team
- 47:53Speaker 2: knows it, the league knows it as well, and what
- 47:56Speaker 2: he provides are those three fastballs, the cutter, the sinker,
- 47:59Speaker 2: and the four-seamer, along with the change-up that neutralizes the
- 48:04Speaker 2: left-handed hitters and keeps everyone off balance.
- 48:08Speaker 4: Eddie, how much does, you just mentioned it, and I
- 48:13Speaker 4: think The Brewers went through it last year, right, when
- 48:16Speaker 4: they beat the Cubs. They said they threw everything into
- 48:18Speaker 4: these five games. How much do you think that White
- 48:20Speaker 4: Sox series will affect the Guardians going forward? Because not
- 48:23Speaker 4: only can they not pitch Gavin Williams, not only can
- 48:25Speaker 4: they not pitch Parker Messick in one and two. Foster
- 48:27Speaker 4: Griffin was an all-star. People forget about that. But how
- 48:30Speaker 4: much will it affect them? Because the Brewers have pretty
- 48:32Speaker 4: much come out and said, man, after we beat the
- 48:35Speaker 4: Cubs in those five games, we didn't have A, time
- 48:37Speaker 4: to prepare, and B, we weren't emotionally ready. Can that
- 48:40Speaker 4: happen to the Guardians against a team in the Braves
- 48:43Speaker 4: that was the best team in the American League all year? Oh,
- 48:46Speaker 4: it can.
- 48:47Speaker 2: I mean, you guys know it. We all played this game,
- 48:49Speaker 2: but at the same time, and I talked to a
- 48:51Speaker 2: few other guys and they won't go on the record
- 48:53Speaker 2: and say it, but is five days of rest good
- 48:57Speaker 2: enough to be ready for a team that's been grinding it?
- 49:00Speaker 2: I mean, you can look at both. Those are polar opposites.
- 49:03Speaker 2: You have your pitching staff set up, everything set up,
- 49:07Speaker 2: but I don't care what you, what anybody else says
- 49:10Speaker 2: that hasn't stepped into that box. It is different when
- 49:13Speaker 2: you are not playing every day, when you're not seeing
- 49:16Speaker 2: that real-life pitching every day. And for the Tampa Bay Rays,
- 49:21Speaker 2: I think we saw it at the beginning as well
- 49:23Speaker 2: against the Yankees early on. It wasn't like they were
- 49:26Speaker 2: mashing early on, but they were able to catch up.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Their pitching was the one that neutralized everything and moving forward.
- 49:33Speaker 2: But Tampa Bay has an advantage here. It has an advantage, one,
- 49:37Speaker 2: that it is tough to play. This is probably the
- 49:39Speaker 2: loudest place I have seen in a long time in
- 49:42Speaker 2: the trop when it is packed. And Drew Rasmussen is
- 49:46Speaker 2: the real deal. Now, if they're able to keep it close, Cleveland,
- 49:51Speaker 2: they're going to start believing and they're going to forget
- 49:53Speaker 2: about that series that you were talking about against the
- 49:55Speaker 2: White Sox. And now it depends on the bullpen. But
- 49:59Speaker 2: how exhausted is that bullpen? How far can Cade Smith
- 50:03Speaker 2: continue to do what he does Gattis doing what he
- 50:06Speaker 2: does as well. Sobrowski just being solid from the left side.
- 50:10Speaker 2: They're going to need Heron, too, to throw strikes and
- 50:13Speaker 2: get ahead. So the bullpen is going to play a
- 50:15Speaker 2: huge part. We saw how many swings and misses the
- 50:18Speaker 2: White Sox had. Tampa Bay is a completely different team.
- 50:21Speaker 2: They frustrated so many guys. You look at Schlittler, who
- 50:25Speaker 2: was a swing and miss type guy. He couldn't get
- 50:28Speaker 2: a lot of swing and miss out of the Tampa
- 50:29Speaker 2: Bay Rays. And that's the one thing that's going to
- 50:32Speaker 2: be interesting is will the defense be able to play?
- 50:36Speaker 2: One thing that I did see with Tampa Bay against
- 50:38Speaker 2: the New York Yankees is their defense came to play.
- 50:43Speaker 4: Eddie, you and I normally get along except for one thing.
- 50:46Speaker 4: You think Ed Svita is good. I think Ed Svita sucks.
- 50:48Speaker 4: So we don't get along.
- 50:50Speaker 2: But he's always with you though. You always take him
- 50:52Speaker 2: everywhere with you.
- 50:53Speaker 4: He's like a cockroach. I can't get rid of that guy.
- 50:55Speaker 4: I mean, he's the worst. Oh gosh. But, um, You
- 51:01Speaker 4: said something, and it just annoys the ever-living crap out
- 51:04Speaker 4: of me. Rest versus rust. Rest versus rust. All four
- 51:08Speaker 4: teams that won their first round, they all sat out, Eddie.
- 51:11Speaker 4: So enough with that. If you're the better team, you
- 51:13Speaker 4: should win. In 2005, I know it's a long time ago,
- 51:16Speaker 4: we had all kinds of time off. You know what
- 51:17Speaker 4: we did? We went out and kicked everyone's ass. That
- 51:19Speaker 4: is the weakest excuse ever, and you only hear it
- 51:22Speaker 4: from teams that lose. The teams that win after they
- 51:24Speaker 4: rested go, it was so awesome having that time off.
- 51:27Speaker 4: We're sitting back watching these teams kick the crap out
- 51:30Speaker 4: of each other. Like, I hate that excuse. I absolutely
- 51:34Speaker 4: hate it. Scott, save the tape, Scott.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Save the tape. And I get it. That's why nobody
- 51:38Speaker 2: says it publicly. That's the first thing. That was the disclaimer.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Nobody's going to admit it. Nobody's going to admit it.
- 51:44Speaker 2: But tell the Colorado Rockies that year that they were
- 51:47Speaker 2: on fire and no one could beat them, and then
- 51:49Speaker 2: they just had to wait.
- 51:50Speaker 4: Yeah, they ran into the Red Sox, who were really good.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and played a seven-game series. So you look at
- 51:57Speaker 2: it in different respects, and you're thinking, Okay, can it happen?
- 52:01Speaker 2: The one thing that you have to give a lot
- 52:04Speaker 2: of teams credit is they do play the simulated games.
- 52:07Speaker 2: They make sure that the players get their time. And
- 52:10Speaker 2: I think a lot of the technology's changed a lot.
- 52:12Speaker 2: The trajectory machine is a game changer for a lot
- 52:15Speaker 2: of these guys to be able to see what that
- 52:19Speaker 2: guy is going to feature in the series. And maybe
- 52:21Speaker 2: you don't have to swing, but you can at least
- 52:23Speaker 2: see the shape of the pitch coming in, and it'll
- 52:26Speaker 2: keep you on time, and it'll give you a better
- 52:27Speaker 2: guesstimate of what's coming in.
- 52:30Speaker 4: Eduardo, I love this time of year because I love
- 52:32Speaker 4: the playoffs, but I also love that everybody talks about
- 52:35Speaker 4: the fact that, well, if you don't play often and
- 52:39Speaker 4: then you get in there, it's tough to play. So
- 52:41Speaker 4: I love that. It's just really just painting out my
- 52:43Speaker 4: entire career so it shows that I was.
- 52:46Speaker 2: Mine too. That's the everyday player talking. He wanted rest, not.
- 52:49Speaker 5: Us, man.
- 52:51Speaker 4: I get rest all the time. I get to watch
- 52:53Speaker 4: everybody play until it's a blowout or there's a nasty
- 52:55Speaker 4: righty on the mound that the other catcher doesn't want
- 52:57Speaker 4: to face.
- 52:59Speaker 2: Isn't it amazing? Isn't it amazing that the league's average
- 53:03Speaker 2: is now what you and I used to hit for average,
- 53:06Speaker 2: and it was below average, and now they're hitting under?
- 53:09Speaker 4: Maybe you. Maybe you. Let's check baseball reference. Let's not
- 53:12Speaker 4: bring up average. Eddie, my question to you, though.
- 53:14Speaker 2: I'm giving you love.
- 53:15Speaker 4: You kind of alluded to it a little bit. How
- 53:19Speaker 4: much of a stark difference is the Guardians staff going
- 53:22Speaker 4: to be facing a team that broke records in strikeouts?
- 53:27Speaker 4: The Guardians just... Essentially the fielders didn't have to, the
- 53:30Speaker 4: six balls were put in play for outs by the
- 53:33Speaker 4: White Sox. And now you're going to the team that
- 53:37Speaker 4: strikes out the least in all of baseball. How much
- 53:40Speaker 4: of a difference are they going to be able to
- 53:42Speaker 4: pitch the same or are they going to need to
- 53:46Speaker 4: find different ways to get out?
- 53:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 53:49Speaker 2: That's why I said defense is going to have to play.
- 53:52Speaker 2: To me, the guardians, they, they, They fell right into
- 53:56Speaker 2: the perfect storm, a team that was trying to hit
- 53:59Speaker 2: that home run. We know that they had three-plus guys
- 54:02Speaker 2: that had 30-plus home runs, but you look at Montgomery,
- 54:05Speaker 2: he had the most strikeouts of anyone this season. You
- 54:09Speaker 2: look at the swing and miss Murakami could also have.
- 54:13Speaker 2: But let's be real. The Tampa Bay Rays, even Junior Caminero,
- 54:19Speaker 2: who is their 40-plus guy, doesn't really chase much out
- 54:23Speaker 2: of the zone. He fouls off some tough pitches. He
- 54:25Speaker 2: grinds at bats. Will he strike out? Yes, he will
- 54:27Speaker 2: strike out. Will other guys? But most of them don't.
- 54:31Speaker 2: And that's the key. They play a fast offense. They
- 54:35Speaker 2: play a different brand of baseball than a lot of
- 54:38Speaker 2: other teams do play. And I think when it's more
- 54:41Speaker 2: of a shock and awe type offense, where they can
- 54:43Speaker 2: beat you with speed, they take first to third real well.
- 54:46Speaker 2: Do they make mistakes? Yes, they do make mistakes. But
- 54:50Speaker 2: Their speed is different. And the one thing that I
- 54:53Speaker 2: remember Mike Petriello breaking down for the ALDS is their
- 54:58Speaker 2: outfield can run them down as well. So you think
- 55:01Speaker 2: that you're going to get a gapper, all of a
- 55:03Speaker 2: sudden they can chase that ball in the gaps really well.
- 55:07Speaker 2: They don't have great throwing arms. The one thing that
- 55:11Speaker 2: I will say is that the Tampa Bay Rays here
- 55:16Speaker 2: at home just played different. They play different, and it's
- 55:20Speaker 2: really weird to see the upper deck packed, guys. I
- 55:23Speaker 2: played here for two years. I never saw it packed.
- 55:25Speaker 2: And to be able to see it loaded and ready
- 55:28Speaker 2: to go is really interesting. And Victor Mesa Jr., guys, defensively,
- 55:37Speaker 2: he's comfortable out there, man. This guy is legit, and
- 55:41Speaker 2: he's a tough out to get as well from the
- 55:43Speaker 2: left side.
- 55:45Speaker 4: Oh, no. Now they're losing balls in the lights, the roof,
- 55:47Speaker 4: and fans in the upper deck. We should just go
- 55:50Speaker 4: back to Steinbrenner Field. My question to you is about
- 55:55Speaker 4: the hitting approach for the Guardians. Because the Rays lead
- 56:03Speaker 4: the league in using change-ups. The Guardians, I think, are
- 56:06Speaker 4: the third worst team in baseball hitting change-ups. We just
- 56:09Speaker 4: saw a game last night with Mizorowski. Mizorowski, they're just
- 56:15Speaker 4: fouling his pitches off. Can the Guardians make a one-game,
- 56:19Speaker 4: seven-game adjustment and be able to defend the changeup, actually
- 56:25Speaker 4: do something with those pitches? Or is that the pitch
- 56:29Speaker 4: that's going to make this a really quick series?
- 56:32Speaker 2: I don't think it's going to be a quick series.
- 56:34Speaker 2: I really don't. I think the Guardians are still going
- 56:36Speaker 2: to make it an interesting series. And look, they're going
- 56:41Speaker 2: to have to beat Martinez. They're going to have to
- 56:43Speaker 2: beat Peralta. Peralta's thrown his changeup a lot more since
- 56:45Speaker 2: he got here. speaking with Kevin cash during the ALDS,
- 56:49Speaker 2: he said, look, everybody thinks we did something different with
- 56:51Speaker 2: them that we taught him a pitch or that. No,
- 56:54Speaker 2: he still grips his change up the same way. Now,
- 56:57Speaker 2: is he throwing it at a higher amount?
- 56:59Speaker 4: Yes.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Is Martinez throwing it at a higher amount? Absolutely. Especially
- 57:03Speaker 2: the equalizer righty against lefty, but they're also throwing it
- 57:07Speaker 2: against right-handed hitters as well. And I think they're throwing
- 57:10Speaker 2: it with conviction at any count. And that really keeps
- 57:14Speaker 2: those guys off balance. Um, But the guy that sets
- 57:18Speaker 2: the tone, and you guys know the data, the last
- 57:20Speaker 2: four years, Drew Rasmussen is the best hidden secret for fans,
- 57:25Speaker 2: but not for the league. The league knows how good
- 57:26Speaker 2: this guy is.
- 57:29Speaker 4: Eddie, what's the one thing, I mean, I know the pitching,
- 57:32Speaker 4: it always comes down to pitching, but what's the one
- 57:34Speaker 4: thing you're looking forward to seeing in this series? It
- 57:37Speaker 4: could be anything. What's the one thing that you're looking
- 57:40Speaker 4: forward to more than anything?
- 57:42Speaker 2: I'll tell you what, not a lot of people enjoy
- 57:45Speaker 2: just watching a pure defensive guy, but Taylor Walls really
- 57:48Speaker 2: surprises me a lot out there. He explains something to us,
- 57:52Speaker 2: and I hope the fans are able to enjoy and
- 57:54Speaker 2: watch it. I don't know if TV, from the angles,
- 57:57Speaker 2: they'll be able to see it, but he led the
- 58:00Speaker 2: league in defensive run saves by a lot. I'm talking
- 58:02Speaker 2: about he had 21 during the regular season. This guy
- 58:05Speaker 2: had 13. It's ridiculous, but he was talking about his setup,
- 58:10Speaker 2: so I was watching it, And it's almost like everybody
- 58:13Speaker 2: wants to do that tennis serve, get the serve, jump
- 58:17Speaker 2: up and down and be ready. He actually goes forward.
- 58:21Speaker 2: And his thought process is anything that's hit hard, he
- 58:25Speaker 2: anticipates everything to be hit soft. That way he can
- 58:28Speaker 2: come in one hand, make the play, and go after.
- 58:31Speaker 2: Almost like a J.J. Hardy used to do with Baltimore.
- 58:35Speaker 2: But he does it really well, consistent, and If you
- 58:39Speaker 2: look at the draft in 2017 when he got drafted,
- 58:44Speaker 2: only one guy has a higher war than he does
- 58:47Speaker 2: from that draft class. And he's not a hitter. He's
- 58:49Speaker 2: not an offensive guy. But he does all the little
- 58:53Speaker 2: things right to help a team win, and everything feeds
- 58:57Speaker 2: off that quarterback at shortstop. And that's the guy that
- 59:00Speaker 2: I'm going to look for. If he does not make
- 59:02Speaker 2: the plays, Tampa Bay is going to struggle. If he
- 59:05Speaker 2: does make the plays, it seems like the pitchers throw
- 59:07Speaker 2: the pitches with more conviction because that outfield is really good.
- 59:10Speaker 2: It's about what goes through the infield.
- 59:13Speaker 5: Hmm.
- 59:14Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 59:15Speaker 4: Wonder why you picked him. Wonder why you picked him.
- 59:19Speaker 5: Hmm.
- 59:20Speaker 4: They've never– I don't know why. I really don't know why.
- 59:23Speaker 4: Have they ever won anything at that university? Anything in baseball?
- 59:26Speaker 4: They've never? Okay.
- 59:27Speaker 2: Just wondering.
- 59:28Speaker 4: I'm just wondering. I don't know why, AJ.
- 59:30Speaker 2: I really don't.
- 59:31Speaker 4: You got a crick in your elbow? I don't understand, Eddie.
- 59:35Speaker 4: What's wrong? AJ didn't go to college, Eddie. AJ didn't
- 59:39Speaker 4: go to college. It doesn't matter. Neither did Eddie. He
- 59:41Speaker 4: went to Florida State. Exactly.
- 59:42Speaker 2: I went to Florida State. I don't know about class,
- 59:44Speaker 2: but I went to Florida State.
- 59:45Speaker 4: Yeah, he didn't go to college either. Don't let him
- 59:47Speaker 4: fool you, Cratchy. Playoffs are about matchups. One fun matchup.
- 59:54Speaker 4: Talking about college, Drew Rasmussen and Stephen Kwan. Stephen Kwan's
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: kind of got his guy. How is Drew Rasmussen going
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: to be able to kind of flip this page a
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: little bit? Because he's seen him all the way back since,
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: what did he say, like 2019 in Fall Ball or
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: something like that?
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: Yeah, that's going to be fun. And, you know, AJ
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: covered this one. I think it's really, I wish AJ
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: would have covered this one. But the way Stephen Kwan
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: moves in the box, moves all over the place, man.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: And you're right, you got Drew, both of them going
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: to college in the same place. I think that's going
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: to be kind of fun to be able to see
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: the Oregon State guys go after it. But Stephen was
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: on top of the plate. His cleats were almost on
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: top of the plate, right on the line. And then
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: when he was going to swing the bat, he was
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: completely off. So he moves around the plate. Not a
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: lot of guys in Major League Baseball do that anymore,
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: let alone the other levels. But he's trying to get
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: on base for Jose Ramirez, and that's their guy. That's
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: their go-to. I think it all comes down to that.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: Can you control Jose Ramirez? Look, when he was out
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: for quite some time with the hand-made issue, I think
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: it made Cleveland better because it taught them how to
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: play without Jose. And it gave them a little bit
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: better of what can we do to win ball gains
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: besides just counting on his legs or his back.
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: Why would you pitch to him? No offense to Chase DeLauder.
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: Why would you ever pitch to Jose Ramirez? I mean, literally,
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: I don't know. It doesn't make any– why ever.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Pitch to him? The best interview was right after the game.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: What pitch did you hit? Home run pitch. He doesn't
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: say it was down. He doesn't say it was a curveball.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: He just says it was a home run pitch. He's quality, man.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: In that clubhouse, you go in there, people are all
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: over him. He's vocal. He's vocal with his bat. He's
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: vocal with, I mean, what a great leader to have
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: that you know he's going to run hard every single
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: time to first base. He's not going to, you know,
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: he's not just going to shut it down. And he's consistent.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: And you've got to give the Guardians a lot of
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: credit for being able to develop a player like that
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: and believe in a player like that. True.
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: Much more organizations had players like that.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: Yeah, you just sit on that pitch, right?
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: That home run pitch.
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: A pitch in in the dirt it's got your back
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: man i'm here i i disappear in between i let
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: the players do their thing but i ask the important
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: top and then the very important listen to eduardo on
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: espn radio and his call of the alcs who are
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: you on with.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: Oh um i'm on with mike cousins today on espn
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: radio we're on the call I just wanted to give
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: you guys a little insight. I think I made more
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: errors in foul territory than I did in fair territory.
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: A lot of pop-ups, man. I hated pop-ups. And I
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: clinked a lot of them in foul territory.
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: Me too.
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: 100%.
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: By the way, you know who would call for that? Sfida.
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: You know who won't have the right answer? Sfida. Sfida.
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: He was a researcher, by the way. By the way.
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: Millions around the world are like, look at this dude up.
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: Eduardo's going to go, and I get it. a big
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: Villanova fan. So jealous. I met the Pope. Can't even
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: explain it, but Sfida ranks his announcers. Okay. I don't
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: even know if Eduardo knows this. Okay. So he ranks his, his,
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: cause he works for, he works for Joe Buck. He
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: works for Adam. I mean, he works for Jason Minetti.
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: He works for, he pretty much does like all the
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: big guys, you know, Aikman. Yeah. Right. He does Monday
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: night football. He does, you know, all these things. Right.
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: So then he ranks his announcers and then he ranks
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: his analysts. Right. So, Eduardo is always 1A, right? So,
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: I always know that I'm beneath Eduardo no matter what
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: I do. So, every time there's a new guy around,
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: I'll be like, hey, Sfida, where do you rank so-and-so
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: in your list? And he just turns bright red and
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: he starts, well, you know, Joe and Troy are always
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: number one.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: Always.
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: And in baseball, Eduardo. So, if you don't know who
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: Sfida is, just understand that he is the most rating
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: high person in the world and Eduardo is one. And
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: I'm like 27D down here. So, it's fair.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: And just looking at my last text from Sfida that
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: came in at 159 this afternoon, he currently has 481,589
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: airline miles right now, and he's trying to get the
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: highest status possible. That's his pride and joy.
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: Yes. He asked when we were just in Milwaukee and
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: San Diego, he's like, Eduardo, he is, he's in the
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: million mile club. How do I get there? I don't
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: understand why. Like he is, it's ridiculous. And he'll do
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: in between baseball and football games. So do like women's
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: water polo in like Finland, just on his laptop like this.
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: And he'll be like, Speedo, what are you doing? A
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: women's water polo game for $ 20 and speeding.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: And he'll do it. And he'll do it.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Well, it was airline miles.
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: They rack up.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: Oh yeah. Eduardo.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: Good to talk to you, man. Good to see you.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: Appreciate you.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: You got it.
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: It's time for cap it. It's presented by lids series predictions.
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: Now we can load up on the ALCS.
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: Kratz with your raise hat. I was going to have
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: AJ go first, but Kratz has already made his decision.
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: I guess AJ, would you like to look at both
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: hats and, Make your call.
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: Yeah, am I just picking the series? What am I
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: picking here?
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you're picking the ALCS.
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: Just, that's it? Just one pick?
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: You can't pick both teams.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: Well, I know. I thought we were doing categories first. Yeah,
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: you can do both. I thought we were doing categories.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: All together, because we ran out of time. So all together.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: What am I picking? What's the categories, Scott? No, your
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: series prediction.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: Series prediction, and then we'll go through the categories.
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: I already said this, Rays. I said Rays-Brewers World Series.
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: Brewers win their first World Series. So Brewers fans, you
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: know what you can do. It's two words. And by
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: the way, yeah, I think the Rays win this series.
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: And I don't know that it might not even be
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: that close, but I think the Rays win this series,
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: and I think the Rays are a really good team.
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: We conversated a lot about this, and we just had
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: Eduardo Perez on. I don't think it's the Rays because
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: they're rested and Or because the Guardians are tired. It
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: was such a tough series. I like the Guardians as
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: a team. I love Steven Vogt as a person. I
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: think the Rays are just one through 26 a better team.
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: And that's why I'm picking the Rays. And I think
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: this team is going to give... For the American League,
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: if you're an American League fan, which I know AJ is,
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: this is the chance to beat a National League team
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: And it has to be the Rays, in my opinion,
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: because I just don't see a more complete team that
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: there's been in the American League. And I know it
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: doesn't matter now, but it's cool that the Rays are
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: going to be the team that wins this series.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: All right, let's show the big board.
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: Is Tuck Eddings going to yell at me? Yeah, not
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: on my show. You're not going to wear a hat
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: like that in my field.
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: The preview board, home field advantage, starting rotation, bullpen, lineup.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: That's what AJ wants.
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: There it is. Boom. Pretty much there. Guardians pretty much
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: have it all except for one thing. I mean, sorry,
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: the Rays have it all. Guardians have the bullpen. And
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: even that, you can make an argument that Tampa is
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: with Baker at the back end is pretty close. But
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: I just think the total bullpen of the Guardians is better. Rotation, Tampa,
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: just because it's lined up and you have Rasmussen, Freddie, Martinez,
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: it's just more lined up. Lineup, more homers, just a
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: better lineup. And home field, Eddie Perez just said it.
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: Tampa Bay, when it gets rocking, I played in playoff
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: games there in 2008. That place was loud as all
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: get out. I mean, yeah, I mean, you see why they're–
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: we have– We have green checks. We kind of agree.
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: And I don't think it's the reason we agree is
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: because we're like Rays fans or anything like that. I
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: just think when you talk about the bullpen, because that's
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: the one where we chose the Guardians, three-game series, five-game series,
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: your bullpen can win it for you. When you're leaning
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: too much on your bullpen, and that's where I think
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: the Guardians bullpen is man-for-man deeper than You just can't
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: quite get that deep in a seven-game series. Like a
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: seven-game series, leaning on your bullpen about the fourth game
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: because you go two off day. three. The fourth game
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: is when A, you've been using these guys a little
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: bit too much and B, they're being seen so they're
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: tired and they're going into the realm where they haven't
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: really been that much and where a team's seeing them
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: three out of four games, possibly four out of four games.
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: And so for the Guardians to win, for the Guardians
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: to flip this, it has to be somewhere in that
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: starting rotation to not expose Sobrowski, not expose Hunter Gattis
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: to sometimes when he becomes erratic and that Bugs Bunny
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: changeup isn't going to be always there. So that's where
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: this series can flip if the Guardians starting pitching is
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: which is not set up to be successful and have
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: Gavin Williams throw twice. That's where it'll help them.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: AJ, you know, the storyline I like.
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: So we have two superstar third baseman, right? Who play
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: the game differently in junior Caminero and Jose Ramirez. Interesting
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: stories with Caminero 2021 in November, he was traded from
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: Cleveland to Tampa Bay for Tobias Myers. So gets to
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: try and burn the organization that didn't think he was
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: going to be a superstar when he was a little, a.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: Little itty-bitty prospect.
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: And then the Jose Ramirez part of me, I know
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: you got to watch too much of him as a
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: White Sox fan just now. He's hurt for a good
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: chunk of this year, right? He comes back, he's not
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: the same. Then it's like, oh, wait, he is kind
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: of that dude for a few games just now. They
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: got the same Jose Ramirez they've been watching for a decade,
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: the future Hall of Famer. So I'm watching the star
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: third baseman, neither of which overall get.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: A ton of attention based on the markets that they
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: play in.
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: Caminero should. Jose– It doesn't because of Cleveland, but Caminero should.
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: So should Jose. I mean, Jose's going to the Hall
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: of Fame. Caminero has hit 40-plus homers the last two years.
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: Pretty tough to find those guys. You know who would
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: look really good maybe playing first base for the Guardians
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: right now?
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Who?
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: Junior.
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: Junior Caminero and his 40-plus homers? Yeah, exactly. I mean,
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: let's pump the brakes here, okay, because Cleveland fans don't go,
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: what we could have had him unbelievable like he played
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: one year in the dominican summer league but he was
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: 17 and he had nine dingers 17 years old i
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: talked to a scout this weekend that saw a 12
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: year old and signed him for four million dollars so
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: when you see power maybe you want to keep power
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: especially an organization who back in 2021 still wasn't able
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: to hit for power. So the Guardians, yeah, you know what?
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: He was 17. But both these guys can carry their team.
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: Both these guys should not carry their team. Or the
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: other team is cooked. The Rays should not get beat
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: by Jose Ramirez. The Guardians should not get beat by
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: Junior Caminero.
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: Nice.
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: Hey, good talk.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: All right, there's your picks.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: Cap it. Nice.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: I like the... Cleveland C there, even though you didn't
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: go with the teams.
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: I love this hat.
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: Really, really nice red that pops with the white C.
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: Text TERRITORY to 29017. That's LIDS, giving you cap it.
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: Your home for all postseason headwear and apparel needs is LIDS. Again,
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: 29017 is what you text to receive 20% off your
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: next in-store purchase. So if you're going to get a
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: hat to rep your squad in the final four here,
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: go to lids message data rates and exclusions do apply
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: on those texts.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: We'll be right back for slap.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: Before we get off the show, I got to give
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: a quick shout out to our boy, Alex Cora. I
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: know another ex baseball player got all the headlines for
- 1:13:03Speaker 4: running the Chicago marathon, but Alex Cora also ran the
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: Chicago marathon. So he's got a lot of stuff he's doing.
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: Besides trying to be a manager, I think his time
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: was 4 hours, 29 minutes, and 42 seconds. So congratulations
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: to Alex Cora for getting it done. Nice.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: Congrats, Alex.
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: Carrying all that cash around that he's still making from
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: the Red Sox, that's tough to do.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to get a good massage after that.
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: By the way, he beat Anthony Rizzo by like an hour.
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: I mean, he beat him by like an hour. Because
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: didn't Rizzo run like five hours and 30 minutes? Come on.
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: Cora's built for running. Let's put it that way, all right?
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: Rizzo's hitting dingers. An hour's a long time. I tried
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: to run a marathon one time. It's not for big fellas, okay?
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: Let's just keep it at 13.1, all right? That's where
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: the big fellas need to stay. That's where I'm smart.
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: I have no desire to run a marathon.
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: All right, we've got a few minutes, and then we
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: will pass you off. Dodgers territory at 3 o'clock Eastern time.
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: They have plenty to discuss. Three topics in three minutes.
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: Ready?
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: First off, Cade Smith's mother watching him pitch and react,
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: and someone was taking video of how nervous and excited
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: she gets. As the mother of a closer, AJ, that
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: was a cool reaction.
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: Yes, agreed. and she's probably super embarrassed that it was posted,
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: but it's an awesome reaction and a parent reaction, a
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: real parent reaction. Come on. Why wasn't she at the game? Yes,
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: come on. Let me get into Cleveland. I mean, they're
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: Vancouver people, so maybe it's a long flight. Come on.
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: Maybe she can't handle it. When we won the state championship,
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: I got videos from all the parents and the kids
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: who were in the videos that they sent me, like,
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: The reactions I hear, I'm like, man, you guys got
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: to relax. Like, the kids are playing. Like, relax. But
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: she was nervous. I love it.
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: Next up, the report coming out after the Braves are bounced,
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: by the way. Didier Fuentes not included in the Terrence
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: Google tradeoff or Braves wouldn't include him.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: Sounded like they might have had a chance of landing
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: him if they did.
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: Well, it's because Jacob deGrom said no. And by the way,
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: Logan Henderson, who pitches against the Dodgers in game two,
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: also wasn't going to be included. So teams are looking
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: at long-term plans over short-term plans.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: Yep. That's fine.
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: And hey, Brewers beat Schuble in game one. So it's
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: more of a question later on in the series. Do
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: the Brewers have the starting pitching? Then we'll see what happens.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: I hope they do.
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: Game four.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: Game four, who they pitch in game four is going
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: to be fascinating.
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: And where the series is at at that point. Is
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: it 3-0? Is it 2-1?
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: I mean, where are we at, right? Who's up at
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: that point in the series, depending on what goes down
- 1:15:59Speaker 3: here the next couple of games?
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: The Tigers got River Ryan. They didn't get Logan Henderson.
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: River Ryan's not starting game two. It's not equal to equal.
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: Didier Fuentes right now is a bullpen guy for the Braves.
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: Is he going to be a starter? He was a
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: starter in the minor leagues. If he stays a bullpen guy... Sorry,
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: bad move. I don't even care if he becomes their closer.
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: I don't care if Robert Suarez leaves. If he becomes
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: their closer, I still don't think it's a good move
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: to have kept him. Now, if he becomes a starter,
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: then you know what? I get that. I get that.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: Good take.
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: And lastly, I think you guys are probably going to
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: want to put this in the save it for a
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: whole segment category. You see what the Arizona Fall League
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: is experimenting with.
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: You guys seen this?
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: I'll read it because we have the podcast crowd. They're
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: experimenting with rules that regulate the positioning of outfielders in
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: an effort to increase the number of balls in the gap.
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: This is the Baseball America post on what's going on there.
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: Outfielders under these rules are playing closer to the lines
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: than normal, creating much bigger swaths of grass in the alleyways.
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: In left center and right center field, Van Graaffs was
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: first to report the news.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: BAs Josh Norris and J.J. Cooper wrote about it if
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: you want to see more.
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: And I think they'll probably talk about it on Hot
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: Sheet on Baseball America's YouTube channel tomorrow.
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: Dumb.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: Awful.
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: Dumb. I understand banning the shift, but it's always been
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: spray charts and you had to move your outfielders or
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: you read a swing and the center fielder would move everybody.
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: This is dumb to me. You know what this is?
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: This is overproducing a baseball game. Just let the kids play. Yeah,
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: I mean, they're helicopter parenting right now.
- 1:17:37Speaker 5: Stop.
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: Like, don't be like parents in this generation. Let them play.
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: Let the hitters make the adjustment. Oh!
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: Experimenting, cool.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: Yeah, implementing is a different story. The Fall League matters
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: to guys.
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: It matters to pitchers. It's a career. Guys are going
- 1:17:55Speaker 4: to be put on the roster or not, and they're
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: giving up balls in the gap that may have been caught.
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: I get it. It's more than just the results, but
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: it is definitely guys' careers. And, oh, we'll just experiment
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: with them.
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: Stop.
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: Sounds like a segment later this week on FT. All right,
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: we'll see you tomorrow.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: Enjoy the game. No, we'll see you tonight.
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: Post game show tonight after the late night affair with
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: the Guardians and the Rays. We'll talk about what happened
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: in both games. Join us tonight on YouTube. All right,
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: and you can swing big on your next same game
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: parlay with an MLB same game parlay boost token for
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: a bigger payout. You can net that payout on a
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: winning postseason same game parlay. It could be a money
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: line and an over-under combo. You could look into some
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: individual stats, too. Or you can tell what we're doing
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: this evening. Don't tell all of them, though, because some
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: of the picks are going against each other. Gambling problem
