- 0:09Speaker 1: hey, welcome back.
- 0:10Speaker 1: It's the north florida sports network and it's time to finally bring back our miami contributor, justin, into the conversation now there's two things that are now.
- 0:26Speaker 2: You got two things back.
- 0:27Speaker 2: You got me back on the podcast.
- 0:29Speaker 2: L-u is back.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yep.
- 0:32Speaker 1: They're back before they even play.
- 0:34Speaker 1: That's classic, but uh, exactly.
- 0:37Speaker 3: We also got.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Jimmy Reno, he's back from, uh, he from Tampa, was it doing?
- 0:43Speaker 3: uh, first downs Tampa was it Doing first downs Tampa hell.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Yeah, out there.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Tomato tornado, same shit man Junior had a football game and I mean it was a jamboree, but actually it was just like basically lining up to get your ass kicked.
- 1:00Speaker 3: They play one of the Florida Elite teams.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 1:03Speaker 3: This is a team playing, a team with kids haven't even played before we get started on week one.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to go back to week zero I I've just been talking and I've been talking to myself.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I did an instant reaction go back, check it out.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And then I did a just another football monday.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Jimmy re was calling in sick, so we'll go ahead and get.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Yeah, shit made me sick, man, let me get your take man, I know, let me get your take on the tough, hard-fought loss.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I've already said my take on it.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Hard-fought.
- 1:36Speaker 3: It's funny that you use that phrase, man.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I just don't.
- 1:40Speaker 3: I just I mean yeah, georgia Tech fought really hard.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Well, I believe Florida State fought.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I just think they were outmatched.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Right and you got to give credit to the opponent and I don't think it was as big as an upset as some people are saying.
- 1:57Speaker 3: No, no, just go ahead and what you're.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I want to hear it, though I know you're.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I'll start by saying, like I had to listen to the last half and you know pretty much, from about the midway second quarter on, I had it on the radio, so you went back and you watched it.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Right, right, right.
- 2:12Speaker 3: But real time is there's, you know real time is real time, but.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Jeff does a great job.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Yeah, man.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I mean, you know the loss and the fact that you got beat and, like you said, it's not as bad or as big of an upset as, yeah, they're making it out to be.
- 2:29Speaker 1: He knew, he knew what kind of team, right, what?
- 2:30Speaker 3: what was disgusting is, um, just the performance by florida state.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Yeah, um, and I want to say like, and it was part of partly the build-up, what we expected going into.
- 2:43Speaker 3: You know, I thought the strength of the team was going to be the defensive line.
- 2:47Speaker 3: That looks like the glaring weakness.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Daryl Jackson looks like a kid that's played one game of football in the last 18 months and he wasn't anywhere near a finished product when he was playing football.
- 2:59Speaker 3: It was nothing but potential and, dude, he was on skates the whole game.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Yep, I don't know, man, the linebacker play is the worst I've ever seen at Florida State.
- 3:11Speaker 3: And it's one game, yeah, but that was just awful.
- 3:16Speaker 3: And I didn't watch the Orange Bowl.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I assumed that a lot of the guys that were playing the Orange Bowl.
- 3:20Speaker 1: That was the don't matter bowl.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Yeah, whatever it was, what Orange?
- 3:23Speaker 3: Bowl.
- 3:22Speaker 1: That was the don't matter bowl.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Yeah well, whatever it was.
- 3:24Speaker 3: And offensively like to me that looked every bad feeling I had, or pessimistic feeling about DJ being the quarterback, just manifested right there in that game Okay, all kinds of stuff and then you break it down, you get into the dumb stuff.
- 3:41Speaker 3: You know Jalen Lucas touching the ball three times.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Even though he was clearly the only chance you had at explosive plays.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Right, just dumb stuff.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Everything's magnetized because, or it brings out, because they did such a great job of controlling the clock.
- 4:02Speaker 3: I don't want to discredit Red Key and their game plan man.
- 4:04Speaker 3: They came out, probably threw out 70% of the playbook.
- 4:08Speaker 3: It was like we're doing this until we get in trouble.
- 4:10Speaker 3: And they were able to.
- 4:12Speaker 3: What two drives that ate up over 15 minutes of the game.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Yeah, that's kicking the shit out of the competition, right.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Just beating them on both sides of the ball down in the trenches.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Florida State figured it out, but it was too late because they had the ball last.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Well, they figured it out offensively, they put a drive together.
- 4:32Speaker 1: They made the plays you had to make just fewer.
- 4:35Speaker 1: So if you miss that one throw you're not going to get another chance, and that one throw he missed against Kai Douglas I think changes the game.
- 4:43Speaker 1: That puts them up a score.
- 4:47Speaker 3: So at least then you have the ball at the end when it's tied, which the bottom line is like when, when you tie the game up and there's six minutes left on the clock, the last thing you want your defense to do is allow the other team to fucking just sit out there and, rather than just score Right, right, right and just excruciatingly get driven off the ball.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Yeah, it's, and I'm going to, I'm going to say it, man, like to have linebackers in that game that play 35 to 40 snaps and not record a single stat.
- 5:18Speaker 3: That's your issue Number one, right there on defense Cause yeah that that's who's.
- 5:26Speaker 3: I mean, that's the difference between, like, a four yard run and a 28 yard run, and that we saw that.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Um, but overall, my takeaway is that this team is it's gonna fight to have a winning season yeah, that that's my feeling on that unless they improve a lot, and we saw some guys that didn't even get to play in the game and I got questions the plus minus thing and all that big numbers charts and I'm totally screwing up the name of it.
- 5:57Speaker 1: But they have us to go, I mean florida state going seven and five, and I can see that, especially after this loss, and that might and that's, that's like the, the number now, so it could be under or over that?
- 6:11Speaker 3: yeah, I mean, if you don't figure something out immediately on defense, which?
- 6:15Speaker 1: is, which is again with the expectations.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I I think you have a guy the quarterback that flor Florida state wanted went to Miami, so they went well, dj.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I mean, if you believe that, let's say let's say that cam war did go to Florida state.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Um, you know the the really the only issue with cam ward is he.
- 6:37Speaker 3: He's got a high number of fumbles.
- 6:39Speaker 3: You know, and you saw that offensive line Cam war is not a guy that's going to run first.
- 6:44Speaker 3: He wants to be in the pocket.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Miami's line has been coming along.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Well, miami's line is especially.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Pass block is worlds better than what Florida State has been the last few years.
- 7:00Speaker 2: And we're buttering them up.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Justin, are you sure?
- 7:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it's the truth.
- 7:03Speaker 2: It's the truth.
- 7:03Speaker 2: I'm salivating, bro.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I don't think it makes a difference, it's under center for Florida state on Saturday.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I don't think they.
- 7:10Speaker 3: No, I don't.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I agree.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I was just saying that that it's not.
- 7:13Speaker 1: You can't put it all on one player and I know DJ missed, I would say, one throw, and it was because of how the game was called.
- 7:21Speaker 1: How the game played.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Yeah, it was really but not because.
- 7:25Speaker 3: It was because of how the game was called, how the game played.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Yeah, it was really vanilla.
- 7:28Speaker 3: On offense, we don't have any wide receivers that are going to be any kind of safety valve.
- 7:33Speaker 1: When you have nine dudes in the box and you're blitzing the safeties, you have to go over the top.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I don't care if you have the best running game ever.
- 7:43Speaker 3: You mean you?
- 7:44Speaker 1: don't run a counter play there.
- 7:45Speaker 1: No, everybody, you need to do something.
- 7:48Speaker 3: What if it's second down?
- 7:49Speaker 3: I mean you got to run it right.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Revell A screen pass Right, right, right.
- 7:52Speaker 2: I mean literally anything other than just another check down dude.
- 7:57Speaker 3: I mean.
- 7:58Speaker 2: DJ.
- 7:58Speaker 2: You look like Chad Pennington.
- 7:59Speaker 2: He's at 6'5" 250.
- 8:01Speaker 2: All he did was dump it off except 6'5" 250.
- 8:05Speaker 2: All he did was dump it off.
- 8:06Speaker 2: It was the problem that, like Jimmy said, the glaring things I saw in that Florida State game is Brock Glenn needs to be y'all's quarterback.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Oh wow really.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I know we've been hearing that under some of our groups.
- 8:16Speaker 2: DJU's hot garbage man.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Dju is hot garbage.
- 8:19Speaker 2: He's on his third transfer for a freaking reason.
- 8:21Speaker 3: And we've seen what he is.
- 8:23Speaker 3: We've seen what guys that are not fleet of foot, so him topping out was last year's Oregon state year.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's all he can do.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Well, they ran the ball.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Well, they ran a pro style offense man Right and they had a pro running back.
- 8:36Speaker 3: They had Martinez at running back.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Who's at Miami now?
- 8:39Speaker 1: And and you didn't, you know like, unless you're playing, Oregon maybe, and this is a guy, brock Glenn, though, who has done what Nothing, but he can run, he can move around.
- 8:59Speaker 3: He's not going to sit there and just squat in the pocket when his first two reads don't go down.
- 9:05Speaker 1: You don't know that Well he may, but he's going to stay here.
- 9:08Speaker 1: I mean did you see the ACC championship game?
- 9:10Speaker 1: They might as well put Toefele at quarterback then.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Hold on.
- 9:13Speaker 2: You think DJU made it to his second read before he squatted down and took the sack.
- 9:18Speaker 3: No.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Because all I saw was?
- 9:20Speaker 2: it was Vince Young's offense.
- 9:21Speaker 2: One read take the sack.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Except Vince Young was running.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Yeah, vince Young can run, and I think maybe that's what you need to do.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Maybe you need to have some more design runs.
- 9:30Speaker 3: We've seen Norvell's offense with a guy that can't run and a guy that moves a step slow in the operating speed, and that's what that looked like.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like trying to run a spread option with Big Ben Roethlisberger man?
- 9:42Speaker 1: Who are you referring to?
- 9:45Speaker 3: I'm talking about Rodemaker Milton when he was hopping around on one leg.
- 9:51Speaker 3: It just doesn't work.
- 9:53Speaker 3: You've got to have a guy right now.
- 9:55Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know if it's Norvell's offense, as much as it is like the offensive line.
- 9:59Speaker 3: We're in year five and we're still relying on on we're not gonna do it yet they're gonna.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Unfortunately, they'll have to lose another game before he would probably think about doing that.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I don't know if he'll do that either, because no it'll be once the the season, everything is off the table for the season.
- 10:17Speaker 3: You know, making, making charlotte and and really even a winning season is is kind of even at at question.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Then you start seeing a youth movement.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I mean, you don't do it in week two or after I would have rather seen him come out and throw in three picks.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Honestly, you know what I mean.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Like and just like, hey, spread it out.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Let's see if you, if you got it that way, you can be like hey, we're pulling them instead of this.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Like hey, I was 19 and 27 efficient ball.
- 10:43Speaker 2: You know it's not my fault and it's almost like all right, you got to see more but all three of us, all three of us could have gone 19 for 27 throwing the ball passes.
- 10:52Speaker 2: All right, all right.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Let's okay, all three of us could do it, but I really do.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I think it's more.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Just like you said, man, he's going to get the blame, just like the quarterback is going to get the blame.
- 11:03Speaker 3: You go 19 for 27, but you missed the only shot that you dialed up.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Well, this team was supposed to be able to run the ball and play defense run the ball and play defense and they didn't do it, and that's why we saw off the screen.
- 11:17Speaker 2: for me was all I heard all off season was how dominant this defensive line was going to be which yeah, and Marvin Jones Jr.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Nowhere to be found.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 11:25Speaker 2: This is all that brings up an interesting point.
- 11:28Speaker 3: No, I believe Marvin Jones Jr and Patrick Payton are the same player at different career points.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Right, Putting them on the field opposite of each other is going to immediately spell bad news for your run defense.
- 11:42Speaker 3: You know, Patrick Payton was never a guy that was a complete defensive end.
- 11:46Speaker 3: He was the pass rusher.
- 11:48Speaker 1: That operated off of Jared Burse.
- 11:49Speaker 1: That's why you saw the weight gain.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Yeah, and we were saying, hey, you know, maybe he'll be a little more complete, but that's just not against us.
- 11:55Speaker 1: You had your best D-line last year and it's probably right now, because both those dudes are listed as starters for the Rams.
- 12:02Speaker 1: You got two NFL starting D-linemen.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Well, it's not just that, man, no, it is just that you had Fabian Lovett and then you had Pat Payton coming in, with no pressure on him, and he could come in and be that specialist.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Now it's like oh, we got to block this guy, we got to block this guy, we got to block this guy and they can't take it.
- 12:21Speaker 3: And they got pushed around and we've seen Payton and Farmer make plays.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Those two guys, we've seen them make plays, but it was as those rotational third or fourth guy.
- 12:33Speaker 1: The guy you're not even game planning for yeah you're not you last year, you're game planning against verse right.
- 12:39Speaker 3: So there was a lot of uh, there was a lot of hype and based on nothing but just hope two guy, two of your linebackers that played a lot for a reason.
- 12:48Speaker 1: So you're the defense was all hyped.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 12:53Speaker 3: So, hold on a second.
- 12:56Speaker 1: It's not fair to, I guess, what this team actually is.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's what we saw.
- 13:01Speaker 3: It was like man, you're going to have to.
- 13:04Speaker 3: This isn't going to be a team that just builds off last year.
- 13:05Speaker 3: We'll see, though.
- 13:05Speaker 1: We'll see because I'm not.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I would not be surprised if Georgia Tech makes a run.
- 13:11Speaker 3: No, they're going to be healthy, they're going to be really.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Now they have to play Miami, they have to play Virginia Tech and I believe the Coastal, if it was still around, would actually be.
- 13:23Speaker 2: We finally have a good team.
- 13:24Speaker 1: We finally have a good division in the conference the entire ACC is Coastal, the Coastal would be really strong this year, because I think Virginia Tech is going to be a really good team this year.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Virginia Tech is going to be tough.
- 13:37Speaker 3: What you didn't see Georgia Tech do is throw it over the top of the defense.
- 13:42Speaker 1: They didn't have to.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Right, any team they play that can stop the run.
- 13:45Speaker 3: That's got a stout front four and good linebackers like Haynes King is going to have to prove that he can throw that he can read a defense Like Haynes King is going to have to prove that he can throw that he can read a defense.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Yes but he can read a defense.
- 13:55Speaker 1: He made the right decisions.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Now they weren't flashy, but he was asked to do what he had to do.
- 14:00Speaker 3: I'm talking about read downfield coverage, when you've got to drop back and read your two, three reads, that's true, and they don't really have.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Yes, yeah and like their lateral game sideline to sideline.
- 14:10Speaker 3: It kills teams because of their speed, but when you've got to throw downfield zone, you've got safeties over the top.
- 14:15Speaker 1: You couldn't have picked a worse team to face if you had to take all the opponents you have to play on your schedule and put them and draw out of a hat in terms of what the order is to those opponents.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Florida State really I'm not even joking couldn't have picked a worse opponent to play.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I don't know If they open with Miami.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Reuben Bain is still eating DJs.
- 14:37Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 14:37Speaker 2: I believe that.
- 14:38Speaker 2: I believe that.
- 14:38Speaker 3: But, I'm just saying, that's going to be tough regardless.
- 14:40Speaker 3: I think this the win.
- 14:42Speaker 1: You played.
- 14:43Speaker 1: This game affected what happened to the outcome more.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I got you.
- 14:47Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 14:48Speaker 2: I think Miami is going to be a monster, no matter what.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You've got a team in Georgia Tech who's going to rely on a particular game plan, who's returning everybody.
- 14:59Speaker 1: If they already had film out and played another opponent, I would not be surprised with Georgia Tech if they played in the fifth game.
- 15:08Speaker 1: It's a different story.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Maybe, maybe.
- 15:11Speaker 3: I think it's just a bad year for us to open with a conference gamewho would have been great to play an fcs team for.
- 15:17Speaker 3: For we, that's.
- 15:18Speaker 3: That's gone.
- 15:19Speaker 1: We've spent the time, we've made it.
- 15:22Speaker 3: You know it's football season, though I'm sticking with my seven and five at best, you know we it's no turnovers.
- 15:28Speaker 1: You said that.
- 15:29Speaker 1: We said no turnovers, it would be close and it was close turnover.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Turnover on downs man, that's a turnover.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Okay, yep.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Well, there you go.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Should have kicked the field goal, Well I said if they don't turn it over.
- 15:40Speaker 1: And they didn't.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Yeah, they didn't.
- 15:41Speaker 1: That was what I said.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I said, if Haynes King doesn't turn the ball over Because DJ L made, in terms of decisions, some of those little dump offs, or just to run it and not fumble, it was really impressive and that's all he had to do, alright, so we're going, we're moving on.
- 16:03Speaker 1: It's week one now, as we move to the end, finally enjoy some football on.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Saturday Florida State will not be playing Saturday, so what we'll do is we're going to look forward to some other big games right off the bat, man, yeah.
- 16:16Speaker 1: And then we'll react to those games Sunday and look forward to the labor day game.
- 16:21Speaker 1: But the first game we want to look at is the one right here, the one we've been looking forward to Florida, miami in the swamp.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Justin man, what's your initial take on it?
- 16:32Speaker 2: Oh, justin, man, what's your initial take on it?
- 16:33Speaker 2: Oh, my initial take is you just gave me the chills when you said Miami and Florida in the swamp.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Oh, oh, I cannot wait, because there is no team that I hate more than the goddamn Gators.
- 16:45Speaker 3: I think if you took a poll around America, that would be like 80 percent of the country well, I hate them for very specific reasons.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and it's because, and it's why I respect Florida state fans more than I respect Gator fans, because Gator fans will not admit that they are chicken shit and refuse to play us every year.
- 17:06Speaker 3: They really won't.
- 17:07Speaker 3: It is funny, man.
- 17:07Speaker 3: They will not over again, yeah.
- 17:10Speaker 2: And they won't do it, they won't do it, they won't do it.
- 17:12Speaker 2: They dropped us off their annual schedule in the late 80s governor forced them to play florida state, so yeah, I mean they're.
- 17:19Speaker 2: They're cowards and they still bitch about that spur your bitches about playing having.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Yeah, they're elitist?
- 17:25Speaker 1: yeah, they are and but that, anywho, you got two coaches here and both on the hot seat.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Is that fair to say?
- 17:36Speaker 2: um, I would say crystal ball is not because of the money they have invested in them, but and, and I would say also this I would say you got until mid-october before crystal ball's on the hot seat, unless everything just goes to hell right off the right, off the rip right, because right now crystal ball like we've talked about for the past two years with him- he seems to have finally amassed the talent to overcome his own stupidity.
- 18:05Speaker 3: That is so true.
- 18:06Speaker 3: I've been waiting for ever since we hired him.
- 18:08Speaker 2: I'm like he's honestly, you're right he's had in there to overcome his idiocy, not enough.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Not enough.
- 18:15Speaker 1: As you can see, if you keep the game close, he can.
- 18:18Speaker 2: He'll pull it out at the end yes, exactly like I've seen haynes king go deep before, and it was against us last year yeah yeah, that's a good point.
- 18:27Speaker 2: I've seen him read that defense going deep at least one time, and it was with 17 seconds left after we didn't take a knee.
- 18:35Speaker 2: But that's beside the point.
- 18:37Speaker 2: That was last year.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I'm telling you right now it's going to be a tough game though Florida.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Oh.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Florida is going to be tough, Even when they don't have the best team.
- 18:47Speaker 1: You saw what they did to Utah just a couple of years ago.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and and Florida, I mean as bad as they've been the past handful of years.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Graham Mertz is still a damn good quarterback.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Yeah, there is talent on that team.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Right, I don't trust their coach, but I trust their quarterback and I trust the crowd at the Swamp to make shit wildly uncomfortable for the Canes they're getting two and a half.
- 19:13Speaker 2: No, I think idiotic well, not really, man.
- 19:18Speaker 1: You look at the rosters and I think miami is legit this year.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I mean the roster's loaded they filled that quarterback spot with on paper a guy that can sling it and you know, and if you have those weapons, which they do, I mean ristrepo man.
- 19:35Speaker 2: I mean he's got his arp card and he's gonna be out there running slants still somehow uh isn't george still on the team.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you got ristrepo, you got jacoby george houston.
- 19:46Speaker 3: What's that, sam sam brown?
- 19:48Speaker 2: right, and then the running back from oregon state yeah yeah and yeah.
- 19:53Speaker 2: So you got damian martinez in the backfield and backing him up when he needs a blow.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Is that monster running back that we saw last year, the freshman kid fletcher?
- 20:03Speaker 3: yeah, he's back so you got, you got a defense.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Was the strength really good, tight end freshman guy right from, uh like from Nevada or somewhere out west.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I got to see him.
- 20:15Speaker 2: I mean, I have faith that he is going to be badass because it seems like every tight end at Miami is a badass.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a little on the short side, but he looks like a problem.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Hey man, give me Miami's version of Nick O'Leary an undersized tight end, I'll take him all day.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Yeah, If he produces like O'Leary did, I'll take him all day.
- 20:36Speaker 3: I'm telling you, florida has problems up front on offense.
- 20:40Speaker 3: They got issues on the offensive line, which is not going to bode well for them against the Canes.
- 20:46Speaker 2: D-line with Reuben Bain.
- 20:47Speaker 2: And then, who's that other pass rusher we brought in from, tyler Barron?
- 20:50Speaker 2: You Is that other pass rusher we brought in from, like, tyler Tyler Barron.
- 20:52Speaker 2: You got Tyler Barron from the portal.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Um, you know that big Justin Scott kid the freshmen.
- 20:57Speaker 3: There's, it's.
- 20:59Speaker 3: It's going to be tough up front for Florida.
- 21:02Speaker 3: I can see it being close early.
- 21:03Speaker 3: I think.
- 21:03Speaker 3: I think Miami is going to win handedly.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Um, it, it's going to get uncomfortable for Billy Napier pretty quickly.
- 21:12Speaker 2: It's two and a half.
- 21:12Speaker 2: I hope you're right.
- 21:13Speaker 2: I hope you're right, man.
- 21:16Speaker 2: I think Graham.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Mertz, though having him is great for that.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Yeah, he's like a stabilizing force on that offense.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Being at home can settle that down.
- 21:29Speaker 1: And they have weapons.
- 21:31Speaker 3: I don't know what they're going to do at running back.
- 21:32Speaker 3: You know Montrell Johnson.
- 21:34Speaker 3: They say he's 100% but still coming off missing most of camp with the little knee issue.
- 21:39Speaker 3: And they don't have Etienne anymore.
- 21:42Speaker 2: He's at Georgia, so they're going to be relying on some young guys.
- 21:45Speaker 2: One shot from Reuben Bain will make his knee hurt again.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I just don't see a way that miami's depth up front on defense isn't gonna ultimately determine this game I, I see it the same way.
- 22:00Speaker 2: I I see what I see miami being able to do and why I I'm I'm saying they're gonna win, but I also wouldn't be shocked if they lose, because you know, 25 years of of kainsdom right here and the money is uh favoring florida.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Most of the bets are at 60 40 right now man, that's I, god man.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I I get it though, because miami always like it's the home dog and it's yeah, it's a home dog in the swamp yeah, and the swamp is a nightmare to play?
- 22:32Speaker 2: no, no matter how bad the Gators are, the swamp is a nightmare to play in.
- 22:36Speaker 2: It is.
- 22:37Speaker 1: And it is that they have a.
- 22:38Speaker 1: It does.
- 22:39Speaker 1: They're going to have a sellout crowd.
- 22:41Speaker 1: It sucks playing there.
- 22:42Speaker 1: It's going to be a rivalry game, feel to it, because you're going to have a bunch of familiarity between the players on the field, but with all the transfers, who knows if that's the same.
- 22:55Speaker 3: It's the same.
- 22:56Speaker 2: It's the same man.
- 22:58Speaker 2: As soon as you put on one of those uniforms, dude, you feel it.
- 23:03Speaker 3: And it's because the coaching staff don't like each other.
- 23:05Speaker 3: None of the coaching staffs in-state get along with each other greatly, but Florida State, florida hate each other.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Miami Florida with each other greatly.
- 23:14Speaker 1: But you know, florida state, florida, miami Florida hate each other.
- 23:17Speaker 3: It's.
- 23:17Speaker 3: There's a lot of talk, it bleeds into the players.
- 23:19Speaker 3: It's, it's a, it's a nasty rivalry and, like Justin said, man like you will not get a Florida fan or graduate alum whatever to admit that they, uh, are the ones that will not play this game.
- 23:31Speaker 3: It's all them, yeah it's infuriating Miami.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Miami.
- 23:39Speaker 1: I think Miami wins too.
- 23:41Speaker 1: So that's three Miami picks.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean what I?
- 23:45Speaker 2: see, you know what I see with Cam Ward, and you all remember this from a couple of years ago, from the COVID year.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Cam Ward reminds me a whole hell of a lot of De'Eric King.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Undersized athletic strong arm.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Both guys from Texas.
- 24:02Speaker 2: He reminds me a lot of De'Eric King and that offense we had with De'Eric King was fun as hell to watch.
- 24:11Speaker 1: If you can stretch the ball and move the ball down the field, it's going to open up your run game.
- 24:16Speaker 1: It's not rocket science, it's football.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Unlike the COVID year, there's no Clemson team.
- 24:21Speaker 3: That's a giant in the way in the ACC.
- 24:25Speaker 2: And I haven't seen an offensive line at Miami like this since Bryant McKinney and Brett Romberg were there.
- 24:30Speaker 2: This offensive line is stacked.
- 24:33Speaker 2: It might be a top 5 50 line in the country that's the reason you got the quarterback right and you get we got the quarterback, we got the running backs, we got the line.
- 24:42Speaker 3: There's no reason this offense shouldn't shouldn't average over 30 a game yeah, oh boy, considering that, I don't see a way that florida puts up those kind of points, so it's kind of easy.
- 24:53Speaker 2: I only, I only do because of paranoia and Mario Cristobal.
- 24:56Speaker 3: We'll go 38, 17.
- 24:57Speaker 3: I think.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Graham Mertz is a really good quarterback.
- 25:00Speaker 3: He is, he is, he's, very he's efficient he's, but you know, at some point, and then I.
- 25:06Speaker 1: I would not be surprised to see leg way play and this kid's good, yeah, yeah, you will see that.
- 25:11Speaker 3: You will see him in there If they're smart.
- 25:12Speaker 1: you bring them along, you play Tebow when you have them.
- 25:17Speaker 1: You play those guys.
- 25:18Speaker 3: That's his ace in the hole.
- 25:19Speaker 3: That's his job security is that he got a lag weight against him.
- 25:22Speaker 3: You can do it in a Chris.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Leak kind of Tim Tebow kind of way, but that's a diamond in the rough right there.
- 25:29Speaker 1: That kid's good.
- 25:30Speaker 3: I'll be interested to see what Florida's defense looks like the tool shed of scheme, Tool shed of scheme.
- 25:34Speaker 3: On D.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Yeah, do they have enough depth to hang with Miami?
- 25:40Speaker 1: I think in the beginning it's going to be feeling them out defensive.
- 25:47Speaker 3: They got a couple good rush ends, but when you're talking about Miami's offensive tackles being a strength, that kind of neutralizes that Kelby.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Collins and LJ Mc.
- 25:56Speaker 3: McCray are not all American defensive end, so it's Miami wins.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Yeah, if what they just play to their talent.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Yes, exactly If they play to their, if they play to their potential and if Mario crystal ball doesn't get in the way.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that way, yeah.
- 26:13Speaker 1: But I was going to say if they don't turn the and if Mario Cristobal doesn't get in the way, yeah, that way yeah.
- 26:15Speaker 1: But I was going to say if they don't turn the ball over, I think they can only beat themselves.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Here.
- 26:18Speaker 1: I mean the fumbles or an interception here, some miscommunication, the environment.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I think if they play clean game, they should win.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and I I would call it, I'd say like a 35, 31, uh, canes win, because I I do see this offense putting up a lot of points and damn near every game this year, like I'd be shocked if our offense is as inept as we were last year I don't think it's a hell of a quarterback that
- 26:45Speaker 3: much no, I don't like.
- 26:47Speaker 3: I know they got a couple of really explosive receivers like but they'll make plays.
- 26:52Speaker 2: They'll make plays.
- 26:53Speaker 3: They are still the gators I don't know what they got in.
- 26:55Speaker 1: The running game trey on webb was supposed to be good, but it's he has forgetting, uh mertz didn't play last year, which you could tell that last year on offense was ugly yeah, no, mertz is a smart quarterback.
- 27:10Speaker 2: They're still athletes on the field at florida right they'll score some points right.
- 27:14Speaker 2: I I don't see miami winning by three touchdowns, like jimmy does, who?
- 27:19Speaker 3: who started for florida last year when we played him, who was their quarterback?
- 27:23Speaker 2: it was that kid that was also a like a center fielder on the baseball team, or something.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right he's super athletic kid with a cannon of an arm.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Yeah, he's transferred already yeah all.
- 27:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:33Speaker 1: All right.
- 27:34Speaker 1: So all right.
- 27:34Speaker 1: We've talked about Florida.
- 27:36Speaker 1: We both think Miami goes into Gainesville and comes away with the win and covers, but it's only two and a half, so all right.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Any other big games you're looking forward to?
- 27:49Speaker 1: I mean you got?
- 27:49Speaker 3: Clemson, georgia.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I'm saying At noon, right off the bat.
- 27:52Speaker 3: I'm saying At noon right off the bat.
- 27:53Speaker 2: I'm excited to see Clemson Georgia because, like I said all year last year, I think Clemson's run of dominance is over.
- 28:04Speaker 2: But they could prove me wrong if they come out and show out against Georgia.
- 28:08Speaker 2: I don't see it happening.
- 28:10Speaker 2: I think Carson Beck is already planning what suit he's going to wear for draft day when he's the number one pick and I think Georgia wins that one by a couple of touchdowns.
- 28:24Speaker 2: But, I am still excited.
- 28:26Speaker 2: I'm really excited for that game.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Just because I like the matchup of Clemson and Georgia, I mean, they're right there.
- 28:31Speaker 1: They're right there From Athens to Clemson man, Georgia.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean they're right there.
- 28:34Speaker 1: They're right there From.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Athens to Clemson man.
- 28:36Speaker 3: This is.
- 28:36Speaker 3: I want to see if Phil Moffitt can do anything against Georgia's defense.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Yeah, the big dude.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I want to see that Because he's going to get the bulk of the carries now at running back.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Finally, but I don't see it being close, man.
- 28:49Speaker 1: I think Georgia's a juggernaut this year.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Georgia's the new Bama at this point, dude, they might be better.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean they might be.
- 28:58Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 28:58Speaker 2: We'll give them another 10 years.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Their offense is more explosive.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean we'll give them 10 years for Bama I know I can't really look into that game, but it wasn't because of Georgia and I think they're just going to brew from that loss.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Kirby's a great coach.
- 29:16Speaker 1: I would not want to be playing them at all.
- 29:20Speaker 1: I don't see them losing all year.
- 29:23Speaker 2: honestly, yeah, I'd have to look at their schedule, but I could only imagine them losing maybe once.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Well, they'll be allowed to lose twice.
- 29:34Speaker 3: They play Alabama in the regular season.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Yeah, they play Ole Miss and we'll see you have to have the running quarterback.
- 29:40Speaker 1: You're going to have to have someone tough and we'll see if.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Oh well, kade Klibnick, kade Klibnick, kade Klibnick, all right well.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Tell you what it's going to be great watching Georgia's linebackers from Tallahassee and Thomasville Georgia out there, you know playing as All-Americans.
- 29:59Speaker 1: They're doing their thing oh man, oh man.
- 30:02Speaker 3: We got guys playing 40 snaps not making a single tackle.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Yep, yep, that's a hole right there.
- 30:08Speaker 1: We're out of wind, all right.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Well, you got that game and then you got Miami Florida at 3.30.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Is that right?
- 30:16Speaker 3: Right, yes, sir, a&m Notre Dame that night.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and LSU USC On Sunday.
- 30:22Speaker 1: On Sunday.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I'm super curious to see what's up with A&M with no Jimbo and just like the dumpster fire that.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Jimbo kind of created over there and I'm a big fan of Elko.
- 30:32Speaker 2: You know I am.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Jimbo kind of created over there and I'm a big fan of Elko.
- 30:33Speaker 2: You know I am.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I was hyping up Duke for the past two years.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Something to watch.
- 30:36Speaker 1: He's going to bring change to culture.
- 30:37Speaker 3: Something to watch in that game.
- 30:39Speaker 3: Freshman left tackle for Notre Dame.
- 30:42Speaker 3: You know their starter out for the season.
- 30:45Speaker 3: It was going up against Nick Skewerton.
- 30:47Speaker 3: Skewerton, the transfer from Purdue, who's an absolute monster at defensive end.
- 30:52Speaker 3: That could be very, very interesting A&M wins.
- 30:56Speaker 3: You think so yeah.
- 30:59Speaker 1: I mean, I think it'd be in a defensive game.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Man, I think you got a guy in Elko who was just there.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Jimbo, I don't think it was just.
- 31:07Speaker 1: You know, he's going to get the morale right.
- 31:11Speaker 1: You got players.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Still, it's going to be at night.
- 31:15Speaker 3: Well, you got a hot shot offensive coordinator now, colin Klein, and you got a quarterback, yeah.
- 31:20Speaker 1: And I think they made the right hire.
- 31:22Speaker 1: They had him there all along.
- 31:27Speaker 2: It's another intriguing game, though, that I'm excited to watch, not just because it's a cool little change of coaching staff.
- 31:33Speaker 1: He's got his former quarterback that he coached at duke is now he's playing him in his first game.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Yeah, and riley leonard oh, how's that leg?
- 31:41Speaker 1: Yeah, so what?
- 31:42Speaker 1: I think that's my question.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Is he that?
- 31:45Speaker 3: thing has not.
- 31:46Speaker 3: You know, it's been procedure after procedure ever since he he shut it down last year.
- 31:51Speaker 2: It I don't know yeah, I mean, I hope he comes back strong, because I I really enjoyed watching that kid play right, but and you put him on a team with more talent than you know.
- 32:02Speaker 1: The sky could be the limit with him if he's back to what he was he's going against a duke team, that I mean a coach that just coached him, so if anyone knows how to stop you, it's you would assume.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it could be vice versa, though, that there's still a lot of defensive talent at texas a&m too.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah that's the thing.
- 32:21Speaker 2: There's still a bunch of talent with bad attitudes.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Yep, and if elko?
- 32:25Speaker 2: Can show the defensive guy, and this is yeah no, like austin, like you said, if, if he can shift the culture, if he, if he, if he got there in the spring and has already shifted the culture with all the talent that Jimbo built up there, that team could be scary.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Oh, they're going to win.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Look at the opening.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Look what they did to Clemson last year.
- 32:43Speaker 1: You could feel that culture when he took over at Duke.
- 32:46Speaker 1: I think it will be something.
- 32:48Speaker 1: And he now has the 12th man.
- 32:51Speaker 1: He's not good rocket science and Elko is a football guy.
- 32:55Speaker 1: I think he's going to get it right.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Just a couple of years ago, before anybody even knew Elko's name, he hung 40 on Miami in Miami.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the guy's a damn good coach, yeah.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Alright, well, let's see.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Oh, who is that we had to go?
- 33:19Speaker 1: Well, we got to get on out of here.
- 33:21Speaker 1: I'll ride to you, but it's good to be back in the football season, man, oh yes, sir, it is.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it really is, and I know you got to feel good about the Canes this year, but I'm excited to watch all types of games.
- 33:39Speaker 1: The playoffs are going to really change everything, oh yeah.
- 33:44Speaker 2: On a 12-team playoff man.
- 33:45Speaker 2: This is what I've wanted since I was a little kid in 1995.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Right, so piece it together.
- 33:53Speaker 1: A loss doesn't mean as much as it used to, no, the third loss is the one that does you in at this point.
- 34:01Speaker 3: Right.
- 34:02Speaker 3: So maybe when you lose a game and you see so many flaws in your team, that's something.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that's different than just any regular old run-of-the-mill loss.
- 34:15Speaker 3: That's when you sit there and you're like all right, my seven and five at best prediction is going to be spot on.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Oh boy, Well, hey, I would not be surprised to see it.
- 34:28Speaker 2: As long as one of those five losses comes to my canes.
- 34:31Speaker 3: I'm good.
- 34:31Speaker 3: I think we'd probably lose to anybody in state if we played them this year we're going to.
- 34:39Speaker 3: You mentioned 2020.
- 34:40Speaker 3: I think we may see a little bit of that this year down in Miami.
- 34:42Speaker 3: Oh, you can't be that bad.
- 34:43Speaker 1: No, no, no, it won't happen.
- 34:44Speaker 1: You've got to give Georgia Tech credit, and I will.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I think they're going to be good.
- 34:48Speaker 1: I think the ACC is going to be better than it was, and you've got a teams out there, virginia.
- 35:01Speaker 3: Tech NC State Miami.
- 35:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it should be interesting to see who gets the shot.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Clemson's still going to have players.
- 35:05Speaker 1: They're not.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Duke's got Malik Murphy, the quarterback from Texas, and Manny Diaz running that defense and look out for Duke this year too.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a lot deeper than it has been, so.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Yeah, possibly ever.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Yeah, so maybe they get three teams in, who knows?
- 35:20Speaker 2: Oh God, that'd be something.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I doubt that.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Oh, that'd be great after Florida State spent the whole offseason trying to sue their way out.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Well, that's about financial money.
- 35:30Speaker 2: No, the irony would just be so funny it would be, you wouldn't let us in because the ACC sucks.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Now the ACC gets a quarter of the teams in the playoff.
- 35:38Speaker 3: I would totally take credit for it.
- 35:40Speaker 3: Yeah well, they only did that because we paved the way.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Trailblazers whoo, All right.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Well, we got big games this weekend.
- 35:48Speaker 1: We'll watch them.
- 35:48Speaker 1: We'll react to you probably Sunday and look forward to the Labor Day game against Boston College.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Until then, talk to you next time, right here on the North Florida Sports Network, hit it.
