- 0:50welcome back to another episode of another week
- 0:53of the living free podcast. Can you believe that
- 0:55this is episode 15? I am shooketh. I just I don't
- 1:01know I know I told God I would do it for a year
- 1:03and I'm already on episode 15 time is flying
- 1:06by I know I took one week off and I Honestly,
- 1:10I needed it not because of the podcast just personal
- 1:13stuff as you all know, but yeah crazy 15 episodes
- 1:19I am so curious to see where we're gonna be when
- 1:21we hit 25 or whatever the next big number is.
- 1:25Anyways, let's go ahead and jump into weekly
- 1:27updates and what I have for you. So what is going
- 1:31on this week? Well, I know I told y 'all or I
- 1:35think I told y 'all that my brother is back from
- 1:37the hospital. He's staying with my mom and I
- 1:40don't know if I mentioned or not that I lost
- 1:42at guess who, but he is able to walk now and
- 1:46use his arms a little bit. So I took him to go
- 1:48play mini golf and I got crushed. I'm embarrassed
- 1:51to say so. I got crushed. I'm not going to give
- 1:55the score because I don't want to count the score
- 1:57and I didn't want to know how badly I lost. My
- 2:00friends who have found out are embarrassed for
- 2:02me and of me and as they should be because I'm
- 2:05embarrassed. Yeah. So my brother who's supposed
- 2:08to be crippled. beat me at mini golf now when
- 2:11we went to what is it called um what's the name
- 2:16of that oh Dave and Busters we went to Dave and
- 2:19Busters I could however shoot a basketball and
- 2:22he couldn't so a wins a win um sometimes you
- 2:25win some sometimes you lose some I might have
- 2:27lost at mini golf but he can't throw a basketball
- 2:30yet so I did win that and I will take any wins
- 2:34I can get Also this week I went on a date. It
- 2:38went really well. We all know that I don't love
- 2:42dating. I don't necessarily enjoy dating. I really
- 2:44am happy with my single life. I truly enjoy my
- 2:47week to week, my day by day, my hour by hour,
- 2:51filled with peace and joy and friends and family
- 2:54and I get to do whatever I want and I don't have
- 2:57to respond to anybody, but I will say this first
- 3:00date went really well. I enjoyed my time with
- 3:03him. He was super talkative and chill and asked
- 3:08questions so I guess my bar is in hell um and
- 3:13he drove all the way up to Wilmington to hang
- 3:16out with me and we walked about five miles and
- 3:19I love a walk so I feel like it went well I guess
- 3:23we'll see if he thinks it went well um yeah so
- 3:27I'll do my best to keep you all up to date on
- 3:29that if it progresses truthfully you just never
- 3:33know I never know with me not even you never
- 3:35know with me I never know with me I'll be really
- 3:37feeling it one minute and then the next I'm like
- 3:39actually my dismissive avoidant kicks in and
- 3:42I'm like get me out of here get me out. So we'll
- 3:45see. And then lastly for weekly updates, me and
- 3:48my roomie very last minute bought tickets to
- 3:52see Megan Maroney and Charlotte and I could scream.
- 3:55I'm so excited. I love Megan Maroney. I've loved
- 3:58this last album. I love the album before that
- 4:00and I didn't think I was going to get a chance
- 4:01to go and some girl was selling tickets online.
- 4:04We snatched those bad boys up and we're going
- 4:07to go to Charlotte to see her and I'm going to
- 4:08stay with one of my friends. Yeah, so I cannot
- 4:11wait to tell you about how that goes. I have
- 4:13about a week until that happens, so I think I'll
- 4:17be posting. Yeah, I will just have posted this
- 4:20episode right as we get ready to go. So anyways,
- 4:22cannot wait. So pumped. Haven't decided what
- 4:24I'm going to wear. Definitely up on Pinterest
- 4:26and TikTok, looking at all the outfit inspo.
- 4:29And I think I have what I need. Hopefully I don't
- 4:32need to buy anything. We'll see. Um, I today.
- 4:39Actually, let me tell you this first. what's
- 4:43in coffee at home i'm bringing this up now because
- 4:46i'm drinking my iced coffee that i made at home
- 4:49because those tickets did not fit in the budget
- 4:53that i planned for them to fit in because it
- 4:55was last minute so coffee at home is happening
- 4:59for the rest of the week or the rest of the next
- 5:02couple weeks for sure good thing i love making
- 5:05coffee at home and thank god i invested in espresso
- 5:08machine If I hadn't, I don't know what I would
- 5:11be doing right now. So yeah, what's in? Coffee
- 5:14at home. You should buy an espresso maker. Get
- 5:18a cheap one. I got an expensive one, but you
- 5:21could get a cheap one. I kind of really love
- 5:23mine. Anyways, I digress. So coffee at home is
- 5:28where it's at. What is out? After today, not
- 5:32today. After today, what is out is eating out.
- 5:35I'm not gonna eat out for the, again, next couple
- 5:37weeks because, once again, these tickets did
- 5:40not fit into the fun budget. But you're in your
- 5:4220s once, you're single once, we might as well
- 5:45spend the money. I'm not saving up for anything
- 5:47in particular. So after tonight, cause I have
- 5:50to go get, have to, I get to go out and eat ramen
- 5:53with my friend Hannah. So after tonight, I will
- 5:56be eating at home. But tonight, today, doesn't
- 5:59count. Okay. That's all I have for you this week
- 6:03on the weekly updates and what's in and what's
- 6:05out. Let's dive in into today's episode. This
- 6:13episode, we are talking about the genealogy of
- 6:16Jesus, part 4. I hope you're excited because
- 6:20I am. I know some people have been dreading it
- 6:25and have been telling me that they're just following
- 6:27along. and it feels like a chore and I'm so sorry
- 6:30honestly skip that episode if you're not interested
- 6:32about the genealogy of Jesus and who was in it
- 6:36and how it came to be and all that to me fun
- 6:39stuff that's totally okay listen to every other
- 6:42episode but this is for those who don't want
- 6:44to do the work but are curious here we go so
- 6:49who are we picking up on well we're gonna pick
- 6:51up on Hezaron I know, so interesting. He is the
- 6:57son of Perez, who is who he left off on last
- 7:00time. And the problem with this is there isn't
- 7:04any information on him. I have read every possible
- 7:07book I could read on it. I've scoured the internet.
- 7:10I have looked into other biblical books and I
- 7:15can't find information on him. If there was info,
- 7:18I feel like I would have found it. So, so sorry.
- 7:21And the other problem is there's also no information
- 7:24on the next four after him. All we know is that
- 7:28he was the father of Ram, and Ram was the father
- 7:30of Amenadab, and who also has no interesting
- 7:35story to be found or told about him. And he was
- 7:38the father of Nishan, and Nishan was the father
- 7:41of Salman. And that is where we're gonna pick
- 7:44up. So this is where it gets good because we're
- 7:47going to pick up our dusty Bibles again and we're
- 7:50going to jump into Joshua chapter 2 and we are
- 7:53going to be reading verses 1 through 24. Okay,
- 7:57verse 1. And it was told to the king of Jericho
- 8:14saying, Behold, men have come here tonight from
- 8:16the children of Israel to search out the country.
- 8:19So the king of Jericho sent to Rahab saying,
- 8:22Bring out the men who have come to you, who have
- 8:24entered your house, for they have come to search
- 8:26out the country. Then the woman looked at the
- 8:30two men and hid them. So she said, Yes, the men
- 8:33came to me, but I did not know where they were
- 8:35from. And it happened as the gates were being
- 8:38shut when it was dark that the men went out.
- 8:40Where the men went, I do not know. Pursue them
- 8:43quickly, for you may overtake them." But she
- 8:45had brought them up to the roof and hidden them
- 8:47with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in
- 8:50order on the roof. Then the men pursued them
- 8:53by the road up to the Jordan, to the fords, and
- 8:57as soon as those who pursued them had gone out,
- 8:59they shut the gates. Now, before they lay down,
- 9:02she came up to them on the roof, and said to
- 9:05the men, I know that the Lord has given you the
- 9:07land, and that the terror of you has fallen on
- 9:10us, and that all the inhabitants of the land
- 9:12are faint -hearted because of you. Verse 10.
- 9:27And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts
- 9:29melted. Neither did there remain any more courage
- 9:32in anyone because of you, of the Lord your God.
- 9:35He is God in heaven, above and on the earth beneath.
- 9:39Now therefore, I beg you, swear to me by the
- 9:41Lord, since I have shown you kindness, that you
- 9:44also will show me kindness in my Father's house,
- 9:47and give me a true token. And spare my father,
- 9:50my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and all that
- 9:52they have, and deliver our lives from death.
- 9:55So the men answered her, Our lives are yours.
- 9:58If none of you tell of this business of ours,
- 10:00it shall be, when the Lord has given us the land,
- 10:03that we will deal kindly and truly with you.
- 10:05Then she let them down by rope through the window.
- 10:08For her house was on the city wall, and she dwelt
- 10:10on the wall. And she said to them, Go to the
- 10:12mountain, least the pursuers meet you. Hide there
- 10:15three days, until the pursuers have returned.
- 10:17afterwards you may go your way. So the men said
- 10:20to her, We will be blameless of this oath of
- 10:23yours, which you have made us swear, unless when
- 10:25we come to this land you bind the lines of scarlet
- 10:29core to the window through which you let us down,
- 10:31and unless you bring your father, your mother,
- 10:33your brothers, and all your father's house to
- 10:36your home. So it shall be that whoever goes outside
- 10:39the doors of your house and into the streets
- 10:42his blood shall be on his own head and we will
- 10:44be guiltless and whoever is with you in the house
- 10:47his blood shall be on our heads if a hand is
- 10:50laid on him and if you tell this business of
- 10:52ours then we will be free from your oath which
- 10:55you made us swear then she said according to
- 10:57your words so be it she sent them away and they
- 11:00departed and she bound the scarlet in the window
- 11:03they departed and went to the mountain and stayed
- 11:06there three days until the pursuers returned
- 11:08The pursuers sought them all along the way, but
- 11:11did not find them. So the two men returned, descended
- 11:14from the mountain, and crossed over. And they
- 11:16came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all
- 11:19that had befallen them. And they said to Joshua,
- 11:22Truly the Lord has delivered all the land into
- 11:24our hands, for indeed all the inhabitants of
- 11:26the country are fainthearted because of us. Let's
- 11:29talk about our girl Rahab for a minute. Dang,
- 11:33she is strong. She had so much courage from only
- 11:36God knows where and so much wisdom, also only
- 11:40from God knows where, to not just lie and hide
- 11:43the spies that were part from her people group,
- 11:47but also strike a deal with them in an attempt
- 11:49to protect her family. She could have been like,
- 11:52nah, we got these huge walls and these big, tough
- 11:54men. We have milk and honey flowing, but good
- 11:57luck to y 'all. But instead, she had the knowledge
- 12:00of the god that was on the spies' side and thought
- 12:03better to put her hope in their goodwill and
- 12:05their god than to put it in her own men. In chapter
- 12:096, we see Joshua and the spies keep the word,
- 12:11and Rahab's family and herself are spared from
- 12:13the destruction that happens. Now, you might
- 12:16be thinking how we ended up talking about Rahab
- 12:19when we're supposed to be talking about the lineage
- 12:20of Jesus. Well, it is told to us in Matthew that
- 12:24Rahab marries Solomon, who is thought to possibly
- 12:27be one of the two spies she protected. She has
- 12:29his child and that child's name is Boaz. So,
- 12:33quick recap before we just jump in and talk about
- 12:36Boaz. Who was Salman? We don't know much other
- 12:38than who his father was, who he married, and
- 12:41who his wife was. We know that they think he
- 12:43was one of the two spies, but besides that, we
- 12:46don't have much information. But, we do have
- 12:49good intel on who Rahab was. Let's spend a couple
- 12:52more minutes talking about our girl. She was
- 12:55a prostitute who put herself in harm's way to
- 12:57protect others. She is an example of faith and
- 13:00courage and she was the first from outside the
- 13:03Jewish lineage being a Canaanite to be added
- 13:07to the line of Jesus, to once again show that
- 13:10he did not only come for the Jewish people and
- 13:13from the Jewish people, but he also came from
- 13:16and for the world. Her story is here to also
- 13:20remind us girls that we need to put our faith
- 13:22in God and not in men. Okay, so... Now, let's
- 13:27talk about Boaz. We meet Boaz in the book of
- 13:30Ruth in the very beginning of chapter 2, and
- 13:33we're going to read verses 1 -16. Okay, verse
- 13:361. Then she left and went and gleaned in the
- 13:58field after the reapers, and she happened to
- 14:00come to a part of the field belonging to Boaz,
- 14:03who was of the family. Now behold, Boaz came
- 14:06from Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, The
- 14:09Lord be with you. And they answered him, The
- 14:11Lord bless you. Then Boaz said to the servant
- 14:14who was in charge of the reapers, Whose young
- 14:16woman is this? So the servant who was in charge
- 14:18of the reapers answered and said, It is a young
- 14:21Moabite woman who came back with Naomi from the
- 14:23country of Moab. And she said, Please let me
- 14:26glean and gather after the reapers among the
- 14:28shaves. So she came, and she continued from the
- 14:30morning until now, though she rests a little
- 14:33in the house. Then Bella said to Ruth, You will
- 14:36listen, my daughter, will you not? Do not go
- 14:38to glean in another field, nor go from here,
- 14:41but stay close to my young woman. Let your eyes
- 14:43be on the field which they reap, and go after
- 14:45them. Have I not commanded the young men to not
- 14:48touch you? And when they And when you are thirsty,
- 14:51go to the vases and drink from what the young
- 14:53men have drawn. Verse 10. So she fell on her
- 14:56face and bowed down on the ground and said to
- 14:58him, Why have I found favor in your eyes, that
- 15:00you should take notice of me when I am a foreigner?
- 15:03And Boaz answered and said, It has been fully
- 15:05reported to me that all that you have done for
- 15:08your mother -in -law since the death of your
- 15:09husband, and how you have left your father and
- 15:12your mother in the land of your birth and have
- 15:14come to the people whom you did not know before.
- 15:16The LORD repay your work, and fully reward what
- 15:19is given to you by the LORD your God of Israel,
- 15:21under whose wings you have come for refuge. Then
- 15:24she said, Let me find favor in your sight, my
- 15:27LORD, for you have comforted me, and have spoken
- 15:29kindly to your maidservant, though I am not like
- 15:32one of your maidservants. Now, Baah said to her
- 15:35at mealtime, Come here and eat of the bread,
- 15:37and dip your piece of bread in the vinegar. So
- 15:40she sat beside the reapers, and he passed. So
- 16:00we learn here that Boaz is known as a worthy
- 16:03man of wealth. He is a relative of Naomi, Ruth's
- 16:07mother -in -law. When Boaz is sharing the bread
- 16:09and the wine with Ruth, In this time period,
- 16:11it was a significant act of inclusion and honor,
- 16:14symbolizing a new, shared identity and a welcome
- 16:17into his circle. It's not just a regular, degular
- 16:20meal. We also learn that he is very caring, but
- 16:24allows her to earn what she is given by not just
- 16:26having his men glean the wheat for her, but they
- 16:30do make it easier for her. Now, in chapter three,
- 16:33we see Naomi gas up Boaz to Ruth. And in the
- 16:36first few verses, we see her tell Ruth to watch
- 16:39Boaz, see where he falls asleep after a night
- 16:42of eating and drinking, and for Ruth to lay at
- 16:44his feet. Now this meant she was symbolically
- 16:47proposing marriage and requesting him to act
- 16:50as her kinship slash redeemer. So she lays at
- 16:53his feet and he's like, what the heck? Who are
- 16:56you? He finds out it's Ruth, allows her to stay
- 16:59the night, and then sends her home with food.
- 17:01So like way better than the dating scene we have
- 17:04going for us right now. Ruth goes home and tells
- 17:07Naomi what happened, and Naomi's like, don't
- 17:10stress about this, this man will have everything
- 17:13worked out by the end of the day. The next chapter,
- 17:16we see Boaz go to their other relative and say
- 17:19something along the lines of, this is your duty,
- 17:21blah blah blah, but if you won't do it, I will.
- 17:24That relative's like, okay bet, that's all you,
- 17:27my guy. So then in verses 13 and 17, we see the
- 17:30ending of their love story unfold. Let's go ahead
- 17:33and read it. Verse 13. So, Boaz took Ruth, and
- 17:37she became his wife. And when he went into her,
- 17:39the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a
- 17:41son. Then the woman said to Naomi, Blessed be
- 17:44the Lord, who has not left you in this day, without
- 17:47a close relative, and may his name be famous
- 17:49in Israel. And may he be to you a restorer of
- 17:52life and a nourisher of your old age. For your
- 17:54daughter -in -law who loves you, who is better
- 17:57to you than the seven sons, has been born him.
- 18:00Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her
- 18:02bosom, and became his nurse. And the neighboring
- 18:05woman gave him a name saying, this is the son
- 18:08born to Naomi, and they called his name Obed.
- 18:10And he is the father of Jesse, the father of
- 18:13David. So, who is Boaz? He was the son of Rahab,
- 18:17whose decision and faith led to him being next
- 18:19in the lineage of Jesus. He was a man of strong
- 18:23character. We don't find anything wrong that
- 18:25he has done in this story. He became a husband
- 18:28to Ruth and a father to Obed. He also is a type
- 18:32of Christ. Boaz's gesture offering Ruth the wine
- 18:35and the bread was a taste of belonging, provision,
- 18:38and a connection to the greater purpose, foreshadowing
- 18:42the spiritual nourishment and acceptance Jesus
- 18:44offers to those in need. Alright, well, I don't
- 18:48know about you, but I love learning about the
- 18:50lineage of Jesus. I think it's so cool to see
- 18:52who's going into his story and building up, and
- 18:56the repetitiveness. of the grace and the redemption
- 18:59and the love and the foreshadowing that we get
- 19:02over and over and over again. I hope you're enjoying
- 19:05the deep dive we're doing into the line of Jesus.
- 19:07I mean, I am doing all the heavy work for you
- 19:09and I hope that you come back for part five next
- 19:13month. Let's go ahead and dive into prayer. God,
- 19:16thank you so much for giving us the opportunity
- 19:19to see just how far ahead you planned for us
- 19:22to be a part of your family. You are so intricate
- 19:26with every piece of the puzzle that you put together.
- 19:30I ask that you give us excitement and courage
- 19:33to learn more about you and your son and every
- 19:36little piece that you aligned and the love and
- 19:38grace that you show us every single day and how
- 19:41you pre -planned for us to be part of your family.
- 19:43That when Jesus was bringing that cross and burying
- 19:46that cross, He knew 300 years later who was gonna
- 19:50be. who was going to be part of the family. He
- 19:52knew 2 ,025 years later that I was going to be
- 19:55a part of the family and that she was going to
- 19:57be a part of the family. I thank you for the
- 20:00forethought and the foreshadowing that you show
- 20:02us every single day as we dive into your word
- 20:05and as they continue to help us grow in our faith
- 20:07and our love and our excitement for you. In Jesus'
- 20:11name, amen. Alright, that's all I have for you
