- Sean Graver: Welcome to Prayer Before Work. I'm glad you're here. And before this day gets going let's slow it down for just a few minutes and bring it to God. And this one today is about the people you work alongside. So let's read some scripture and then we'll pray. So we're going to be in Ecclesiastes 4 verses 9 and 10 where it reads, because they have a good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up." So the preacher here is making a simple and practical case for doing life and work together. You get a better return. You get mutual support and plus a safety net when things go wrong. And then there's that last line about pity anyone who falls alone. Now there's a real sadness in that image, think. Isolation is not strength. It's just loneliness. Now work culture often rewards the individual. The person who delivered, the one who closed the deal, met the deadline, hit their numbers. Individual performance matters, don't get me wrong. But the best work I've ever seen... happens when a group of people are genuinely for each other, where someone else's struggle is everyone's problem and someone's win is everyone's celebration. This is where the goal is bigger than any one person's contribution. And that kind of team does not just happen magically. It's built through trust and through honesty and through choosing the organizational interests over the individual gain. Does that sound Too much like a utopian viewpoint? Well, one of the best executives that I ever worked under said it best is that a company is nothing more than a group of people who come together with a common goal and vision. And there's a lot of truth in that, even in a big company. So who on your team do you need to show up for a little more fully today? Not because it helps you, because it helps them. and because two really are better than one. ⁓ God, I thank you for the people that I get to do this work with. I don't always say that. Sometimes I'm more aware of the friction than the gift, but help me to see my team today the way you see them. Help me to be the kind of teammate and leader who makes the work better for everyone around me and someone who shows up for the person who fell down. who shares the win instead of holding onto it. Someone who builds trust in the little moments and where there's division or tension, the people around me, would you be the one who brings us back together? Because unity is a gift that comes from you. Help us receive it and thank you for the people in my corner. In Jesus' name, amen. Go make today count.
