- 0:12Speaker 1: what did you expect? It's a podcast called twenty five Whistles.
- 0:20Speaker 1: This is twenty five Whistles with Bobby Bones, presented by
- 0:22Speaker 1: Draft Kings Sports Book, an official sports betting partner of
- 0:25Speaker 1: the NFL. Download the Draft Kings app and use the
- 0:28Speaker 1: code Bobby sports to get in on the action. So
- 0:31Speaker 1: it is holiday season and we are around, but I
- 0:34Speaker 1: wanted to take this time to actually highlight some of
- 0:35Speaker 1: the really cool stuff we've been able to do this year.
- 0:38Speaker 1: So it's talking to awesome people that I never thought
- 0:41Speaker 1: I would get to interview because well, we weren't doing
- 0:43Speaker 1: a sports show. But here we go. Let's do this week.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Colin Cowherd, Jay Glazer and Marcelli's Wiley. All three had
- 0:49Speaker 1: a very different journey in their career, with Marcelli's playing
- 0:52Speaker 1: in the NFL to j and Colin cover in the
- 0:55Speaker 1: league for decades on different spectrums, but again, all three
- 0:58Speaker 1: have had a very unique journey to success. So this
- 1:00Speaker 1: one was super cool. All of them are. But first
- 1:02Speaker 1: up is Colin Cowherd. I wanted to find out how
- 1:04Speaker 1: Colin went from a small town in Washington to really
- 1:07Speaker 1: one of the biggest faces and voices on sports radio
- 1:10Speaker 1: and television. So Colin and I discussed there were some
- 1:12Speaker 1: of the first people that doubted him, how divorce left
- 1:15Speaker 1: him poor, and who instilled dreams into him, and a
- 1:17Speaker 1: whole bunch more. I hope you enjoyed this interview because
- 1:19Speaker 1: I did. And check out twenty five whistles. If you're
- 1:22Speaker 1: here by any other way, then the feed all right,
- 1:24Speaker 1: thank you, Hey, Colin. First off, just been a massive
- 1:26Speaker 1: fan for I'm just gonna start with this and we'll
- 1:28Speaker 1: move to the real stuff. But for like fifteen years,
- 1:30Speaker 1: like die hard massive fans, So to be able to
- 1:33Speaker 1: sit and talk with you for just a few minutes, like,
- 1:35Speaker 1: it's a real thrill for me. So thank you. Oh
- 1:37Speaker 1: of course. Yeah, your careers exploded. It's just amazing. They're
- 1:40Speaker 1: really behind you at the company. I think it's great.
- 1:42Speaker 1: So what I'm curious at how other people do their
- 1:47Speaker 1: creative endeavors and before, because I do want to go
- 1:50Speaker 1: back to when you were a kid. But I want
- 1:51Speaker 1: to know what your day is like. Meaning I watch
- 1:55Speaker 1: a show and I DVR it, so I do get
- 1:57Speaker 1: to watch or I'll hit the podcast. It's I see
- 2:00Speaker 1: and I hear, but people don't see the behind the
- 2:02Speaker 1: scenes stuff. What how do you get into the daytime?
- 2:04Speaker 1: And how many people do you sit with before show
- 2:06Speaker 1: and go over ideas or segments? Get up at about
- 2:10Speaker 1: five forty. Uh, leave my house at about six there
- 2:13Speaker 1: at six fifteen, put the contacts in, walk upstairs, and
- 2:18Speaker 1: it's about an hour and a half. Process used to
- 2:21Speaker 1: be about two hours. But we've got a really good crew.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I would say there are nine people in the room. Um,
- 2:28Speaker 1: they've got about ten stories laid out for me. I
- 2:31Speaker 1: picked probably four, Um, and then they just keep throwing
- 2:35Speaker 1: ideas at me. I usually come in with something to
- 2:38Speaker 1: say on one or two. I have kind of a
- 2:40Speaker 1: worldview on how I view each story. And then I
- 2:44Speaker 1: just like them to pitch ideas and funny lines and
- 2:48Speaker 1: argue and anyway we can sand paper it to get
- 2:51Speaker 1: the most interesting take. Um. You know, I tell young
- 2:55Speaker 1: broadcasters all the time, don't be consumed with being right.
- 2:58Speaker 1: It'd be great to be right, but be interesting. Find
- 3:01Speaker 1: the most interesting angle on something. And Uh, that's what
- 3:04Speaker 1: we're already strived for. Just and I've done it long
- 3:06Speaker 1: enough Bobby where I can kind of sense like, oh yeah,
- 3:09Speaker 1: I haven't heard anybody say that on that story. And I,
- 3:12Speaker 1: by the way, I'm always hoping to be right. But
- 3:14Speaker 1: what I think is you're probably curious. I think I'm curious.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I'm looking for angles on stuff, and I like the
- 3:23Speaker 1: the why better than the what, Like why is this happening?
- 3:27Speaker 1: I can see what is happening. I think sports talk
- 3:30Speaker 1: show host tell me what I see. I like to
- 3:33Speaker 1: be the one percent that says, this is why you're
- 3:35Speaker 1: seeing it. And you know, a lot of times I'm wrong,
- 3:38Speaker 1: my theory is wrong, but I think a lot of times, um,
- 3:42Speaker 1: that's what we're always seeking, kind of the why why
- 3:46Speaker 1: something is happening. You know, it sounds to me when
- 3:48Speaker 1: you describe what you do there's still a passion in
- 3:49Speaker 1: your voice about what you do and to be doing
- 3:52Speaker 1: it at such a high level for so long to
- 3:53Speaker 1: still have that passion, Like what is it what happened
- 3:56Speaker 1: in your childhood? With me, it was just growing up
- 3:58Speaker 1: a food stamp kid and a welfare kid. But what
- 4:00Speaker 1: is it for you that keeps you just driven towards
- 4:03Speaker 1: this the success really that no one else has had
- 4:06Speaker 1: like you've had it well, you know, you know, I
- 4:10Speaker 1: had all the things necessary, probably a childhood divorce, high
- 4:13Speaker 1: school acne, girls not dating me. Um, the divorce left
- 4:20Speaker 1: me very poor. UM. Always felt loved, but kind of
- 4:25Speaker 1: a reluctant. My mom was sort of British, UM, doting
- 4:30Speaker 1: son of protective UM. You know, dad was a really
- 4:35Speaker 1: decent guy. UM, small town doctor, but very career driven. UM.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Maybe I felt ignored and wanted people to pay attention
- 4:44Speaker 1: to me. I knew what I wanted to do at
- 4:45Speaker 1: a very early age, but I also felt um. And
- 4:49Speaker 1: it's not sad, but I felt I was kind of
- 4:51Speaker 1: on my own. Like it's not that my parents weren't
- 4:57Speaker 1: there for me. I mean, you know, I never or
- 5:00Speaker 1: felt never verbal abuse or I wasn't loved, none of
- 5:05Speaker 1: that stuff, but I always kind of felt, um. My
- 5:09Speaker 1: dad was a workaholic, my mom was British, didn't really
- 5:13Speaker 1: wasn't going to help me a lot in my career,
- 5:16Speaker 1: and so I always felt sort of um. And the
- 5:21Speaker 1: word escapes me. I would say, if I needed to
- 5:26Speaker 1: be self reliant and if and if I didn't succeed,
- 5:30Speaker 1: then I wouldn't succeed if I didn't make my own
- 5:33Speaker 1: pass um. And you know I tell my kids this
- 5:37Speaker 1: all the time, is that I don't I want to
- 5:41Speaker 1: raise you, so at twenty years old, you don't need
- 5:45Speaker 1: me anymore. Like That's kind of how I was raised.
- 5:47Speaker 1: And I think that kind of fight and that survival
- 5:49Speaker 1: mechanism has been really powerful for me. So, um, you know,
- 5:53Speaker 1: I definitely child of divorce, a sister that was five
- 5:57Speaker 1: and a half six years older. So but time I
- 6:00Speaker 1: was in high school, she was out. Um, you know
- 6:03Speaker 1: we weren't close. No, No eighteen year old girl wants
- 6:06Speaker 1: to hang around a twelve and a half year old boy, right,
- 6:09Speaker 1: And so I and I lived. It was rural, so
- 6:12Speaker 1: I didn't have this wide social net of friends. I
- 6:16Speaker 1: mean every house was you know, always away, so you
- 6:20Speaker 1: kind of had to make up your own fund. And
- 6:22Speaker 1: I would make up batting lineups on a piece of
- 6:25Speaker 1: paper and do the play by play, and play whiffleball
- 6:28Speaker 1: by myself, and and and play basketball sometimes by myself,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and shoot baskets. And you know, I was a laker.
- 6:34Speaker 1: It's jabbar over to this player, over to that player
- 6:37Speaker 1: eighteen foot are good? Talk to myself? Still do a
- 6:40Speaker 1: lot um so that independence, self reliance still kind of
- 6:46Speaker 1: you know, it thrives in me today. You know, rural.
- 6:49Speaker 1: That's how I describe where I'm from. I'm from a
- 6:51Speaker 1: small town in Arkansas, like seven dred people, and there
- 6:53Speaker 1: was nobody to tell me that I couldn't do anything.
- 6:55Speaker 1: But nobody actually knew you could outside of where you lived.
- 6:58Speaker 1: There was a mill. It's a saw mill town, and
- 7:00Speaker 1: so they weren't saying you can't go and do a
- 7:02Speaker 1: TV show or a big radio show, but they definitely
- 7:05Speaker 1: weren't saying I could. And the same thing about you,
- 7:07Speaker 1: like who told who put it in you? Who instilled
- 7:10Speaker 1: in knew that there were these dreams that no one
- 7:14Speaker 1: around you had actually reached out in touch, but that
- 7:16Speaker 1: you could do it. Um, that's a good question. I
- 7:19Speaker 1: think that is a good question who instilled these dreams?
- 7:25Speaker 1: I think I always felt like an underdog, Like when
- 7:29Speaker 1: I went to college, Um, I always had that chip
- 7:34Speaker 1: on my shoulder. Nobody thought I could do it. Um,
- 7:37Speaker 1: you know, I didn't have a lot of money. I
- 7:40Speaker 1: had to work while I went to school. And I
- 7:43Speaker 1: think there's a survival thing. I think I don't know
- 7:46Speaker 1: if anybody told me I could or couldn't do it.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I just remember my mom when I was about thirteen
- 7:52Speaker 1: years old, twelve or thirteen years old, telling me one
- 7:56Speaker 1: day I was reading the paper. She goes, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 1: you just can't read the sports section. That just can't
- 8:00Speaker 1: be it. And I said, yeah, it can't. I am
- 8:02Speaker 1: gonna work in sports. I am going to work in sports,
- 8:06Speaker 1: and I know it, and I just I just at
- 8:09Speaker 1: a very early age, you know, a quarterback my high
- 8:12Speaker 1: school team. I was a little taller than some guys,
- 8:14Speaker 1: a little more athletic. I always said, you know, I
- 8:16Speaker 1: dated like a cheerleader. I always had kind of even
- 8:18Speaker 1: though I was kind of goofy, I kind of had
- 8:21Speaker 1: this confidence about me. And and uh, you know, I
- 8:23Speaker 1: can remember when I was, you know, seventeen to seven,
- 8:28Speaker 1: you know, and I was in Vegas. I remember, you know,
- 8:31Speaker 1: I would date women, are go on dates, and they'll
- 8:32Speaker 1: be like, man, you're you are driven, like you you
- 8:35Speaker 1: just you are. They're like, you know, you'd be impossible
- 8:39Speaker 1: to marry, like you're married to your career. And I
- 8:41Speaker 1: would be like, yeah, it's great. It's a great career.
- 8:44Speaker 1: It's a great life, you know, and then all of
- 8:46Speaker 1: a sudden, you have kids, I get married, it's thirties.
- 8:49Speaker 1: But I think I think, um, Bobby, I just think
- 8:51Speaker 1: I was so driven and that comes from loneliness and uh,
- 8:58Speaker 1: you know, just sort of this small town underdog, underdog mentality,
- 9:03Speaker 1: and I think it's just always been in me. I
- 9:05Speaker 1: don't know if it was engineered by anybody. I don't
- 9:08Speaker 1: if it was, I don't remember it, um, but I
- 9:11Speaker 1: always knew. I can remember when I was young, just
- 9:15Speaker 1: thinking I had no doubt in my mind I was
- 9:18Speaker 1: going to be like a network sportscaster. It never And
- 9:20Speaker 1: when I went to college and people didn't care as
- 9:23Speaker 1: much as I did, I remember thinking, this is my competition.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And then I went to Vegas and got a job
- 9:28Speaker 1: and the people I worked with didn't care as much
- 9:30Speaker 1: as I did. So every step of the way, I
- 9:31Speaker 1: was like, man, I am really into this, and other
- 9:34Speaker 1: people think it's just the job. And so every market
- 9:37Speaker 1: I went to, it was like, man, they just don't
- 9:39Speaker 1: love it like I do. They don't think about it,
- 9:41Speaker 1: they don't dream about it, they don't plan for it,
- 9:43Speaker 1: they don't construct their day around it. So I just
- 9:45Speaker 1: I kept being reminded how much I loved it, and
- 9:49Speaker 1: if I worked HAWRD, how I could get there, and
- 9:51Speaker 1: it was just step after step after step after step,
- 9:54Speaker 1: and that passion, that confidence just grew as I'd be
- 9:59Speaker 1: I join clubs or stations or radio stations or TV stations,
- 10:03Speaker 1: and I could just tell it was a job for
- 10:05Speaker 1: people and it was more of a mission for me.
- 10:08Speaker 1: I talked to my therapist a lot about balance, because I,
- 10:10Speaker 1: like you, have just been consumed with me having this
- 10:16Speaker 1: humongous chip, probably much bigger than I should have, but
- 10:19Speaker 1: in trying to prove people wrong, and I trying to
- 10:21Speaker 1: prove people right, Like I'm at the point of my
- 10:23Speaker 1: career where is I go. Okay, I'm gonna prove these
- 10:25Speaker 1: folks right who have invested in me. And I've done
- 10:28Speaker 1: pretty good sin on the old therapist couch, but I'm
- 10:30Speaker 1: married now for the first time. I didn't get married
- 10:32Speaker 1: tops forty years old. And balance is a struggle because
- 10:35Speaker 1: I have been so consumed with what I do, which
- 10:40Speaker 1: was my job. How in the world do you reach
- 10:43Speaker 1: the level that you've reached and still achieve any sort
- 10:45Speaker 1: of balance. Well, I've I've had some balance, Bobby. What
- 10:51Speaker 1: I really try to do, and it's not always easy,
- 10:55Speaker 1: is live very much in the moment, is that when
- 10:59Speaker 1: I'm around my life or my kids, I really live
- 11:02Speaker 1: in the moment. I just this is going to be
- 11:04Speaker 1: what I do. I went to Rome with my wife,
- 11:07Speaker 1: I went to Italy for a week and just put
- 11:08Speaker 1: the phone down. Or I go to Turks and Kikos,
- 11:10Speaker 1: take pictures, put the phone down. So try to live
- 11:13Speaker 1: in the moment when I have these opportunities. Um, but
- 11:17Speaker 1: I think it's a struggle. You know. I said this
- 11:19Speaker 1: once to a therapist. I think I wrote about this
- 11:21Speaker 1: once in my first book. I said, Um, you know
- 11:25Speaker 1: when they there's a lot of things that make people happy.
- 11:29Speaker 1: If you googled what makes people happy, they would say, um, animals, um, giving, um,
- 11:39Speaker 1: good friends. You know what? They never say balance? Peyton
- 11:44Speaker 1: Manning wasn't balanced? I mean, was was Michael Jordan balanced?
- 11:49Speaker 1: I think balance? I think it's a little overrated. You
- 11:53Speaker 1: know what. I'd rather be wildly passionate about my wife,
- 11:58Speaker 1: about my job, about my the volume. Um. I think
- 12:03Speaker 1: I'm really passionate. And as I've gotten older, I've pruned
- 12:06Speaker 1: my tree like that doesn't matter, that doesn't matter, that
- 12:09Speaker 1: doesn't matter. But I don't think balance has ever made
- 12:13Speaker 1: me happy. I mean, do you tell me. Are you
- 12:17Speaker 1: I'm happy today? Are you happy? Yeah? I'm happy because
- 12:20Speaker 1: I'm at the place now where like all that I've
- 12:24Speaker 1: been working for forever is finally coming to fruition, right,
- 12:27Speaker 1: Like I've really just in the TV world and the
- 12:30Speaker 1: radio world and the It's like I'm finally getting the
- 12:33Speaker 1: opportunity to pick what I want to do instead of
- 12:35Speaker 1: I get to say no to things. Like how cool
- 12:37Speaker 1: is that? I know I've never got to say no
- 12:39Speaker 1: to things before, like real things, and I get to
- 12:40Speaker 1: say no. And it's a weird thing too, but that
- 12:43Speaker 1: to me, I told my wife because she has a
- 12:45Speaker 1: great family, and to her family has always been a
- 12:47Speaker 1: bit but I didn't have a dad, don't have mom,
- 12:49Speaker 1: and so I've just had my career and so now
- 12:53Speaker 1: I'm you know, you're trying to figure I'm trying to
- 12:55Speaker 1: figure out, like how in the world do I bout?
- 12:57Speaker 1: And balance doesn't meant but how in the world do
- 12:59Speaker 1: I balanced this at all? And I look at someone
- 13:01Speaker 1: like you who's able to crush it professionally, and I
- 13:04Speaker 1: hear you talk about your wife and even your kids,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and it's like, dang, how does he do that? So
- 13:09Speaker 1: I guess if anything I'll send you a bill for
- 13:11Speaker 1: this therapy session is over. But but you know, you
- 13:15Speaker 1: know who never seems happy to me? Ski bum poet,
- 13:19Speaker 1: web designer, part time artist. A million things. They're not
- 13:26Speaker 1: a mile deep on any of them. If you're if
- 13:28Speaker 1: you're totally invested in your wife and totally invested in
- 13:31Speaker 1: your career, and then you have a really great charity
- 13:34Speaker 1: and then you have a couple of kids, what a
- 13:36Speaker 1: life or do you have when you're into those I mean,
- 13:41Speaker 1: balance is one of those sort of like ethereal, sort
- 13:44Speaker 1: of nebulous things. It's like, I live a balance life. No,
- 13:48Speaker 1: I sleep for seven, I work for six. I nap
- 13:52Speaker 1: and listen to music for one. I work out for one,
- 13:56Speaker 1: I eat for two. I'm into all of those things.
- 13:59Speaker 1: When I'm doing them, I don't sit around worrying about balance.
- 14:03Speaker 1: What I worry about is enjoying the time I have
- 14:05Speaker 1: in the moment doing what I'm doing, and if it
- 14:08Speaker 1: comes out as balance. But there are some days I
- 14:10Speaker 1: don't do much work. Uh you know, once the football
- 14:13Speaker 1: season ends, I get three day weekends. I don't even
- 14:15Speaker 1: think about work. So and then there are other times
- 14:19Speaker 1: during the football season I'm you know, my Sundays are
- 14:21Speaker 1: a work day. So I think sometimes people it's like
- 14:25Speaker 1: FOMO fear of missing out. There's this fear of lacking
- 14:29Speaker 1: balance will create a new f o LB fear of
- 14:33Speaker 1: lacking balance. I don't think that many people have balance,
- 14:36Speaker 1: and I don't think perfect balance makes anybody happy. Let's
- 14:40Speaker 1: go back to a job that you had early on
- 14:42Speaker 1: that at the time seemed tough, but you look back
- 14:45Speaker 1: and you're like, dang, I actually learned a lot there.
- 14:46Speaker 1: You know. I did play by play the home games
- 14:49Speaker 1: that I played, they played for for division to Henderson
- 14:50Speaker 1: State University, and then on the road had to do
- 14:53Speaker 1: play by playing color because we couldn't afford to send
- 14:55Speaker 1: two people out in the crew, and that was it
- 14:57Speaker 1: was really hard. But I look back and I'm like, man,
- 14:59Speaker 1: I really learned a whole lot there in Hot Springs,
- 15:02Speaker 1: Arkansas doing radio show. I learned a whole lot because
- 15:04Speaker 1: I had to do everything. When you look back at
- 15:05Speaker 1: your career, what was that job or a couple of
- 15:07Speaker 1: jobs for you where really difficult, but you're so thankful
- 15:10Speaker 1: you had on because of everything that you you developed. Well,
- 15:13Speaker 1: my first job out of college was really doing an
- 15:17Speaker 1: inning of play by play for Las Vegas. You say
- 15:20Speaker 1: an inning, I did it, just an inning that I
- 15:23Speaker 1: had to sell, and they would give me one inning
- 15:25Speaker 1: of play by play. Iff I I was like two,
- 15:28Speaker 1: So the guys around me were like thirty eight forty.
- 15:31Speaker 1: They would have been doing it for years. They probably
- 15:33Speaker 1: resented me. And it was hard because I wanted to
- 15:35Speaker 1: be on the air more. Um, So I had to
- 15:38Speaker 1: do sales all day and then I would do prep
- 15:40Speaker 1: and then I would do an inning and save my tapes.
- 15:43Speaker 1: And I mean my my. I spent like seven eight
- 15:46Speaker 1: years in Vegas, a couple of sales, a couple doing
- 15:49Speaker 1: an inning, then a TV station hired me. Vegas was
- 15:53Speaker 1: a grind. It took years off my life. UM, it
- 15:55Speaker 1: was really really hard. I didn't have a lot of
- 15:57Speaker 1: money for probably the first five six years child to divorce,
- 16:00Speaker 1: so I went into the city broke. I was broke
- 16:02Speaker 1: from about five or six years, I mean had no money, um,
- 16:05Speaker 1: and was working NonStop ending of play by play, doing sales,
- 16:09Speaker 1: and a local TV station hired me. I didn't internship
- 16:12Speaker 1: turned into a weekend sports job. UM. But I will
- 16:16Speaker 1: tell you this, UM, I needed other people and there
- 16:22Speaker 1: were a lot of beer and chicken wing nights with
- 16:25Speaker 1: TV people and radio people. And as you and I
- 16:29Speaker 1: get more successful, I think we'll just sort of naturally
- 16:32Speaker 1: have fortresses around us. Right. You have the agent, you
- 16:35Speaker 1: have the bosses, and you don't deal with the day
- 16:38Speaker 1: to day because you're gonna start. You're making so much
- 16:40Speaker 1: money for the company now, and hopefully I am that.
- 16:42Speaker 1: You know, we are two of the people at the
- 16:45Speaker 1: company that are you know, business is thriving, and so
- 16:50Speaker 1: this is where I wanted to be. But those journey
- 16:53Speaker 1: years for me, I have such good memories, all the mistakes,
- 16:58Speaker 1: all the dollar chicken wings. Um, I was a more
- 17:02Speaker 1: social animal then. I'm probably less social now because it's
- 17:04Speaker 1: more about family and business. So those years I have
- 17:08Speaker 1: very six seven years, very fond Vegas memories. The Mob
- 17:12Speaker 1: was still in Vegas then it was it was a
- 17:14Speaker 1: different town than it's very corporate now. I feel like
- 17:17Speaker 1: I got to see the old it was transitioning old Vegas,
- 17:21Speaker 1: like the movie Casino, you know, that was just ending.
- 17:24Speaker 1: And then I went to Vegas and it was starting
- 17:26Speaker 1: with instead of like a guy owning a casino, it
- 17:28Speaker 1: was the Hilton, it was the MGM, it was you know,
- 17:31Speaker 1: so I felt like I was in a transition stage
- 17:33Speaker 1: in Vegas, and I feel so lucky that I lived
- 17:35Speaker 1: through that. I got on a Southwest flight once and
- 17:38Speaker 1: Barry Switzer was on the flight, and I was like, dang,
- 17:41Speaker 1: this is crazy. Barry Switzer, who's from Arkansas near where
- 17:43Speaker 1: I'm from, obviously coached Oklahoma with cowboys, but he's he's
- 17:46Speaker 1: an Arkansas guy like me, and I flipped out. And
- 17:49Speaker 1: I think we're both probably pretty jaded now when it
- 17:52Speaker 1: comes to celebrities, because we know they just happened to
- 17:54Speaker 1: have a skill that culturally we deem a little cooler
- 17:58Speaker 1: than the rest. It just so happens their skill as
- 18:00Speaker 1: dean cooler. And so at this point I don't get
- 18:03Speaker 1: star struck by many folks, and I would assume it's
- 18:05Speaker 1: the same for you. But who have you met in
- 18:07Speaker 1: the last few years where you're just like, this is
- 18:09Speaker 1: so freaking cool. I get to meet and talk with you. Well,
- 18:13Speaker 1: I'm always amazed. A lot of people watch sports shows
- 18:18Speaker 1: or see my clips, and I think that the funniest
- 18:21Speaker 1: story was, uh, I was phili Keith Overman had a
- 18:25Speaker 1: show on ESPN years ago, and he took a couple
- 18:28Speaker 1: of days off, and so they called me and said
- 18:30Speaker 1: would you do Keith Show? It was a TV show
- 18:32Speaker 1: in a New York setting, So I drove to New
- 18:34Speaker 1: York day the night and I did the show for
- 18:35Speaker 1: a couple of days. And he doesn't like college football much,
- 18:38Speaker 1: so they said, hey, we want to put some college
- 18:40Speaker 1: football in the show. Uh, let's condo. Lisa Rice is
- 18:44Speaker 1: a big fan of college football. I was like, awesome, um,
- 18:48Speaker 1: and so I pre taped the interview with Conda Lisa Rice.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Right that you put into the show and it looks
- 18:53Speaker 1: live and you tape it for twelve fifteen minutes. You
- 18:55Speaker 1: use eleven of unit ten of it and so like
- 18:59Speaker 1: here we can see other on a screen and I'm like, um,
- 19:03Speaker 1: two one, And all of a sudden, I hear this
- 19:05Speaker 1: the herd and I'm like, I'm like, she goes, Oh,
- 19:10Speaker 1: I listen to you every morning on the treadmill, and
- 19:12Speaker 1: I'm like, um, you're running the country. Stop that that.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Stop that right now, don't do that. And we sat
- 19:17Speaker 1: and talked about things for about ten minutes, and that
- 19:19Speaker 1: was like one of those this is really really cool,
- 19:24Speaker 1: Um that that's one that really jumps out to me.
- 19:28Speaker 1: And then I've had, um. You know something I like?
- 19:31Speaker 1: Um this football season, I've been interviewing Sean Payton, Saints coach,
- 19:36Speaker 1: for thirty minutes on Mondays and he comes into the
- 19:38Speaker 1: studio and we talked before he goes on the air,
- 19:41Speaker 1: then during it, and off and after, and I'm still
- 19:44Speaker 1: a kid. I'm so fascinated by how his mind works
- 19:48Speaker 1: about football. I that is my happy zone, talking football
- 19:54Speaker 1: with one of the five smartest offensive guys ever. And
- 19:57Speaker 1: he's telling me stuff on the air then off the air, Bobby,
- 20:01Speaker 1: That to me is that will never I could be
- 20:04Speaker 1: ninety that I've had these conversations with Jimmy Johnson off
- 20:08Speaker 1: the air in the green room when I used to
- 20:11Speaker 1: do the Sunday show for Fox, and I would just
- 20:14Speaker 1: pepper him with questions and Bobby would tell me the
- 20:17Speaker 1: hurricane days and the Dan Marino stories and the Dallas
- 20:20Speaker 1: stuff that you can't say on the air. That to
- 20:24Speaker 1: me is when I'm just jaw dropping in awe of
- 20:28Speaker 1: of what I do for a living. I'm like nobody's
- 20:31Speaker 1: this is the coolest thing in the world right now
- 20:33Speaker 1: talking to Jimmy Johnson about the Miami hurricane days. And
- 20:37Speaker 1: I can't tell any of these stories on there, that's
- 20:40Speaker 1: those are the best stories. I get those a lot too,
- 20:42Speaker 1: and I'm like, one day I'll be able to share this.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And because you know, in this industry here, there's a
- 20:48Speaker 1: lot of shady stuff that goes down that's very interesting
- 20:50Speaker 1: and very entertaining, but it's also the shady stuff that
- 20:52Speaker 1: you can't share. And so I know, you know, Bobby,
- 20:56Speaker 1: when I when I when I started in this business,
- 21:00Speaker 1: I tell people this. In my twenties and early thirties,
- 21:03Speaker 1: if I had information, I wanted to make sure everybody
- 21:07Speaker 1: knew I had information. Now I'm in my fifties, I
- 21:11Speaker 1: have to bury information because I've built up all these
- 21:15Speaker 1: sources through the years and they tell me stuff and
- 21:18Speaker 1: I can't let it out, and so I'll never write
- 21:21Speaker 1: a book on it. I'm not going to do a
- 21:22Speaker 1: coral though and write a book, you know, at the
- 21:24Speaker 1: end of my career. So I find that early in
- 21:26Speaker 1: my career, I was like, hey, I got information. I
- 21:28Speaker 1: want to tell you now, like you you have sourcing,
- 21:33Speaker 1: you want to be close to people, you want to
- 21:34Speaker 1: be trusted, and I don't say stuff. I got a
- 21:37Speaker 1: lot of information that I that I that I can
- 21:39Speaker 1: kind of use on the air as a direction or
- 21:43Speaker 1: are starting point on a story. But I I'm so
- 21:47Speaker 1: glad there are people out there that trust me like GMS. Um,
- 21:51Speaker 1: you know players and they know I'm not going to
- 21:54Speaker 1: burn them. Um. But that's the that's the part of
- 21:56Speaker 1: my job. Like you, you and I will have this closet,
- 22:00Speaker 1: this little black book of stories that that will never
- 22:03Speaker 1: get out. But that is one of the great things
- 22:06Speaker 1: about our job, that information and that proximity to people
- 22:09Speaker 1: that they trust us. And I really appreciate that. Who
- 22:13Speaker 1: was the first person that actually expressed to you and
- 22:16Speaker 1: you believe them that you could be great? Um? So
- 22:23Speaker 1: I was. I had worked in Vegas for seven years
- 22:30Speaker 1: and then I got a job in Tampa doing weekends
- 22:35Speaker 1: and to supplement my income. A local, Rob wine Gardener
- 22:42Speaker 1: I think is his name, Rob wine Garden. He was
- 22:46Speaker 1: a program director at a sports talk radio station in
- 22:50Speaker 1: Tampa and he had seen me on TV and he said,
- 22:52Speaker 1: I got this old guy. Hubert Mizelli is a sportswriter,
- 22:56Speaker 1: the late Hubert Minzella. Good friend. He goes, I want
- 22:57Speaker 1: to couple you with him in the mornings. I said,
- 23:00Speaker 1: I'd be awesome. So we did it and I have
- 23:02Speaker 1: been doing it for about six months and one day
- 23:06Speaker 1: Rob came in and Rob said, hey, you have a
- 23:09Speaker 1: phone call. Um, I want you to call this guy
- 23:12Speaker 1: back after the show. He's a sports talk radio consultant.
- 23:15Speaker 1: His name is Rick Scott, Seattle Base. So I did
- 23:19Speaker 1: the show with Hubert. Hubert was very funny, we got long,
- 23:21Speaker 1: great and the show was overnight. I called this guy
- 23:24Speaker 1: back and Rick Scott was in town. I think he
- 23:30Speaker 1: he was, you know at that time, Bobby and still is.
- 23:32Speaker 1: There was like two or three sports radio stations in town.
- 23:35Speaker 1: And he had seen me the night before on TV
- 23:38Speaker 1: and he said, you don't know who I am. He says,
- 23:42Speaker 1: quit television, You're going to be the rush Limbob sports
- 23:46Speaker 1: talk radio host. And I went, what do you mean
- 23:52Speaker 1: and he said, I've heard everybody in the country. He
- 23:56Speaker 1: goes quick television. He goes, I'm gonna call you in
- 24:00Speaker 1: about three months, four months, keep working at it, and
- 24:04Speaker 1: blah blah blah blah blah. A while later, a few
- 24:07Speaker 1: months later. So that was the first person that ever
- 24:09Speaker 1: said anything. And I was just like, you know, because
- 24:11Speaker 1: I didn't listen. I didn't listen to everybody else. I
- 24:12Speaker 1: didn't know what everybody else sounded like, except the people
- 24:14Speaker 1: in Tampa. They were fine. And then a few months later, um,
- 24:20Speaker 1: I was sending out TV tapes and another guy called me.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Bruce Arena ran a station in Portland, and he said,
- 24:28Speaker 1: I got a call from Rick Scott and I was
- 24:30Speaker 1: told hire you. He goes, I've never heard of you,
- 24:33Speaker 1: and I've never heard your tape, but I trust Rick,
- 24:36Speaker 1: so you want to be my sports afternoon host. So
- 24:39Speaker 1: that was my big break. But that was the first time,
- 24:41Speaker 1: um I thought, you know, a Hugh Bobby. I thought
- 24:43Speaker 1: it was a hard worker and I was talented, and
- 24:45Speaker 1: I cared about it and I was invested in it.
- 24:48Speaker 1: But nobody had ever said, hey, you could do this,
- 24:51Speaker 1: and it really inspired me. It was really inspiring to me.
- 24:55Speaker 1: It was just like Wow, I almost felt like this
- 25:00Speaker 1: guy knows this industry way better than I do. I
- 25:02Speaker 1: don't want to disappoint him, so it made me work harder.
- 25:05Speaker 1: You know, before sports Talk Ready when I first started
- 25:07Speaker 1: was I was a TV guy and I just liked
- 25:10Speaker 1: talking and Hubert myl Myzel was very funny and he
- 25:13Speaker 1: had this sort of southern charm and I just liked him.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Were like the same stuff. We laughed a lot um,
- 25:19Speaker 1: but it didn't pay at all back then, and and
- 25:21Speaker 1: and and it just wasn't as formidable like with my
- 25:24Speaker 1: heart as it is now. It just it just wasn't.
- 25:27Speaker 1: I think Rome was Jim Rome was just starting and
- 25:29Speaker 1: it just wasn't that. It wasn't the industry that it
- 25:32Speaker 1: is now. So that was it. That was the first
- 25:35Speaker 1: time somebody said, but you could potentially be something pretty cool. Well,
- 25:40Speaker 1: this is one of those moments for me that I've
- 25:41Speaker 1: mentioned earlier where it's just freaking cool to be able
- 25:43Speaker 1: to hang out. So thanks for being so generous with
- 25:45Speaker 1: your time. Been a massive fan forever and I'll just
- 25:49Speaker 1: continue to be a massive fan. And that's that's it.
- 25:52Speaker 1: So thanks Colin, and hopefully one day I'll see in
- 25:54Speaker 1: real life. Bobby. Um, you are beloved at the company.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Your career is on fire for reason. Musically gifted, verbally gifted,
- 26:03Speaker 1: you have earned all of it. And um you're one
- 26:06Speaker 1: of the easiest guys in our business a route for
- 26:08Speaker 1: so I'm really happy for you. Thanks Colin, and I
- 26:09Speaker 1: hope you have a great day. Thanks for the time, buddy.

- 26:56Speaker 1: three six nine. The second interview of this podcast that
- 26:59Speaker 1: I wanted to share with you is former NFL pro
- 27:01Speaker 1: bowler Marcellus Wiley Love Him Loves Podcast. Marcella's played the
- 27:05Speaker 1: NFL for a decade. We talked about preparation for these
- 27:08Speaker 1: athletes and what it takes to be on top of
- 27:09Speaker 1: their game consistently, and when he realized he was an
- 27:12Speaker 1: elite athlete as a kid. It's a lot of great
- 27:15Speaker 1: insight from a former player and what these athletes have
- 27:18Speaker 1: to deal with, what they go through. Just one of
- 27:20Speaker 1: my favorites here is Marcello's wiley Marcellas, how are you? Oh?
- 27:24Speaker 1: I'm great man, Yeah, same to you. Really just super pumpty.
- 27:28Speaker 1: You'd spend a few minutes with us here. I want
- 27:30Speaker 1: to talk about being ready for a second, And so
- 27:32Speaker 1: I do one of like the radio show that I
- 27:35Speaker 1: do every day is and in a couple of hundred cities,
- 27:36Speaker 1: and it's a thing. But each night I set aside time,
- 27:40Speaker 1: and each morning I said aside time, a couple of
- 27:41Speaker 1: hours here, a couple of hours there, or if I'm
- 27:43Speaker 1: doing stand up on the weekends, I'm spending time riding.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Whatever I'm doing. I dedicated an amount of time that
- 27:47Speaker 1: I think is sufficient to doing a good job, putting
- 27:50Speaker 1: a good work out so I can make my money. Right.
- 27:54Speaker 1: That's that's what we're all doing. Now. Some nights, let's
- 27:56Speaker 1: say my wife and I decided to go to dinner
- 27:59Speaker 1: and I don't get to do as much preper reading
- 28:01Speaker 1: the news as much or and then I go in,
- 28:03Speaker 1: I'm like, well, I'm just gonna have to skate through
- 28:06Speaker 1: this one because I did. Now does that happen week
- 28:08Speaker 1: to week with you guys? Are you're supposed to watch
- 28:10Speaker 1: a whole lot of film and maybe you do thirteen weeks,
- 28:13Speaker 1: but there's a couple of like I didn't get I
- 28:14Speaker 1: didn't get too as much of it as I should.
- 28:15Speaker 1: So I'm just gonna hope this works out. Yeah. Absolutely,
- 28:18Speaker 1: there are times. I mean, if there's a uniform standard
- 28:21Speaker 1: of uh traditional prep time of fifteen hours, are there
- 28:26Speaker 1: weeks when there's twelve hours? Absolutely? Are there weeks when
- 28:28Speaker 1: it's seventeen? Absolutely? And you ride the wave. And one
- 28:33Speaker 1: thing you have to always be is the ultimate justifier
- 28:36Speaker 1: and you also got to be your biggest cheerleaders. So
- 28:39Speaker 1: if you're ill prepared for the game, you gotta start
- 28:43Speaker 1: lying to yourself. No, today we plan on instinct. Today
- 28:47Speaker 1: we're playing off, just playing on what we see. You know,
- 28:51Speaker 1: you gotta start justifying and lying to yourself because you
- 28:54Speaker 1: know you're not ready for that moment. And it's the
- 28:57Speaker 1: same thing in our in our world, in any endeavor,
- 28:59Speaker 1: if you walk in the door and you don't feel it,
- 29:03Speaker 1: you gotta find it from somewhere else. And usually it's
- 29:06Speaker 1: between those ears. When you're growing up and you are
- 29:09Speaker 1: the athlete that you are and also the person who
- 29:11Speaker 1: is dedicated to being a better athlete, at what point
- 29:14Speaker 1: did your ability catch up with you having to actually
- 29:18Speaker 1: put in a bunch of time preparing as a really
- 29:21Speaker 1: smart kid. Once I got to by my second year
- 29:24Speaker 1: of college, I was like, oh, I now I gotta study.
- 29:25Speaker 1: I can't just go off straight what I can pick up?
- 29:28Speaker 1: When did that happen to you? Where I was? I've
- 29:30Speaker 1: been a great athlete in my whole life, but now
- 29:32Speaker 1: I gotta do extra to make sure I can stay elite. Yeah,
- 29:37Speaker 1: I think that funnel starts from the day you really
- 29:40Speaker 1: play sports like I started when I was eight years old. Um,
- 29:44Speaker 1: and eight years old, all you have to do to
- 29:46Speaker 1: play football and be good is be fast, you know,
- 29:48Speaker 1: Like every fast eight year old is an m v P.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Like there's no slow eight year olds that are like
- 29:54Speaker 1: out there balling like you're gonna you're gonna get caught
- 29:57Speaker 1: like you do. Just it's it's it's too simple a game.
- 30:00Speaker 1: But as the game gets more complex, then you have
- 30:02Speaker 1: to grow with it in the complexities. Right, So for me,
- 30:06Speaker 1: I would say late high school, even though I still
- 30:09Speaker 1: was beasting, Um, I started to realize, like you just
- 30:12Speaker 1: can't wake up, put on the house shoes and then
- 30:15Speaker 1: ball out of control, like there will be resistance and
- 30:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to start out maneuvering people out thinking
- 30:22Speaker 1: people just can't always out run everyone. Geometry comes into play.
- 30:26Speaker 1: These cats are starting to take better angles, coach. These
- 30:29Speaker 1: guys are starting to run to the ball collectively, like
- 30:32Speaker 1: you can start to see where the chess matches being
- 30:35Speaker 1: introduced to the game. So it happened step by step.
- 30:38Speaker 1: But I would say late high school certainly college, even
- 30:41Speaker 1: though I went to an IVY school. It wasn't just
- 30:43Speaker 1: grab everyone like I was storing and just throw them
- 30:46Speaker 1: across the field like I had to do things with
- 30:50Speaker 1: my mind and body and combination. And then you know
- 30:53Speaker 1: the Pros. Every single player in the Pros, they're a
- 30:57Speaker 1: black belt. It's just what degree of black belt are day.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Even the sorriest dude who never gets playing time, who's
- 31:03Speaker 1: on the practice squad is a black belt just one degree.
- 31:06Speaker 1: When you look at quarterbacks and where they're taking in
- 31:08Speaker 1: the draft, and the top two or three will go
- 31:10Speaker 1: to the worst teams, usually worst I'll even say programs institutions.
- 31:17Speaker 1: When you were playing, what quarterback did you see that
- 31:19Speaker 1: probably was wasted because he went to a bad organization
- 31:23Speaker 1: and you're and you're lined up, and you're like, oh damn,
- 31:25Speaker 1: this guy's actually could be really good, but everything around
- 31:28Speaker 1: him is not and he was not able to flourish
- 31:30Speaker 1: because of that. Wow, you know, Um, Carson Palmer keeps
- 31:36Speaker 1: coming to mind, but he did flourish. But I was like, yo,
- 31:39Speaker 1: Carson Palmer is a monster and not getting his proper
- 31:42Speaker 1: do and then he got hurt in the one playoff
- 31:45Speaker 1: year and game that I thought they really could do something.
- 31:47Speaker 1: So someone who didn't get their full bouquet of flowers
- 31:51Speaker 1: was Carson Palmer. I was like, that dude's a monster.
- 31:54Speaker 1: But he's in Cincinnati and they're trying to figure it out,
- 31:56Speaker 1: and didn't they get the receivers and Chad and t J.
- 31:59Speaker 1: And like they did something, but they didn't really do
- 32:02Speaker 1: what they could have done in a different situation. Carson
- 32:05Speaker 1: Palmer comes to mind. Um, outside of him. Man, I'm
- 32:11Speaker 1: drawing a blank man. A lot of cats. They you
- 32:15Speaker 1: can play. You can play at quarterback through the expectations
- 32:20Speaker 1: stelling like of a team. If the team is tapered here,
- 32:24Speaker 1: like you're right here, but you're that quarterback. You can
- 32:27Speaker 1: drag that team to higher levels, but there is going
- 32:31Speaker 1: to be a point of exhaustion and a point where
- 32:33Speaker 1: it can't go any further. But Carson Palmer is the
- 32:35Speaker 1: guy for me. Like Matt Stafford is somebody that I
- 32:37Speaker 1: think about. If he never would have got out of Detroit,
- 32:40Speaker 1: he was never going to win a championship. And you
- 32:43Speaker 1: know the Stafford. Now, I may imagine if a healthy
- 32:46Speaker 1: young Stafford, a Stafford that you still could mold, because
- 32:50Speaker 1: at this point he is who he is. But imagine
- 32:53Speaker 1: young Stafford went to out of Georgia, goes to a
- 32:57Speaker 1: great program that can actually develop him. Like I think
- 32:59Speaker 1: we probably missed a little bit there because he was
- 33:01Speaker 1: in Detroit for so long. I just one again, you've
- 33:03Speaker 1: done at the highest level for so many years. Hey,
- 33:05Speaker 1: the podcast is more to it, So what are you
- 33:08Speaker 1: talking about constantly? Like if I'm if because I do listen,
- 33:11Speaker 1: by the way, but if two people are listening to this,
- 33:14Speaker 1: what are they going to hear when they come over
- 33:15Speaker 1: and listen, appreciate you and to listen. Um more to
- 33:20Speaker 1: it is we're talking about sports, entertainment, culture to athletes,
- 33:25Speaker 1: about athletes, about entertainers, influential people. And what we're trying
- 33:30Speaker 1: to find out is there's more to every single story
- 33:33Speaker 1: the life lessons and experiences that come through watching sports
- 33:37Speaker 1: or watching anyone in this world in terms of the
- 33:40Speaker 1: hot button issues. So we're always trying to go deeper
- 33:44Speaker 1: than the surface level and find out what's the motivation,
- 33:47Speaker 1: what is really happening in that emotional state that is
- 33:51Speaker 1: contributed to that success. Marcel's I'm a big fan. Listen
- 33:54Speaker 1: to you love it. Just super pump that you're able
- 33:57Speaker 1: to come on and just thanks man, follow at ourselves, Wiley,
- 34:00Speaker 1: and thank you again and keep it up, and you
- 34:02Speaker 1: know I'll be there. I'll be a fan quietly in
- 34:04Speaker 1: the corner like I have been for a while. Oh
- 34:06Speaker 1: my man, you keep it going, brother, tremendous success, all right, Marcella,

- 35:27Speaker 1: next interview I was super excited about. But I was
- 35:31Speaker 1: so impressed with just how open and vulnerable that Jay
- 35:36Speaker 1: Glazer was and just how effective he was at communicating
- 35:40Speaker 1: his struggles and his successes. And so Jay Glazer, he's
- 35:43Speaker 1: the guy we see every Sunday or maybe you watched
- 35:46Speaker 1: him with the rock On Ballers. Jay is an advocate
- 35:49Speaker 1: for mental health like I am, and he's helped multiple
- 35:51Speaker 1: grade athletes get through their own mental battles. He also
- 35:54Speaker 1: talks about Sean McVeigh, the Rams coach, and how Sean
- 35:57Speaker 1: came to him for advice prior to turn their season
- 36:00Speaker 1: around and then win of the Super Bowl. Jay is
- 36:01Speaker 1: a great guy. I think you'll like this if you
- 36:03Speaker 1: haven't heard it, Here is Jay Glazer. Jay, thanks for
- 36:06Speaker 1: coming on, Bud absolutely Man I'm excited to come on
- 36:09Speaker 1: here with you. Hey doing I'm doing good. Let me
- 36:11Speaker 1: fanboy for a second and say that I'm just a
- 36:13Speaker 1: massive fan and I always I mean, I look forward
- 36:15Speaker 1: to a lot of the things that you do, especially
- 36:17Speaker 1: the hits before the games, because I'm like, all right,
- 36:19Speaker 1: let me find out was what was either breaking or
- 36:21Speaker 1: what do I need to know about who's hurt? So
- 36:23Speaker 1: before we talk about some of the stuff that you're
- 36:24Speaker 1: working on, just let me say that I'm a massive
- 36:26Speaker 1: fan for a long time of what you do. Thank you, brother,
- 36:29Speaker 1: Appreciate it. Man, It's it's pretty cool for me. This
- 36:31Speaker 1: is my twentieth year at the NFL and Fox. So
- 36:33Speaker 1: like every weekend I get to have a family reunion
- 36:36Speaker 1: with the rest of my family and we're all crazy,
- 36:38Speaker 1: you know. It's me and Bradshaw and how we long,
- 36:40Speaker 1: and and my baby sister, Michael Strahan and Karamenofie and
- 36:43Speaker 1: Jimmy Johnson. But every week I get to have a
- 36:46Speaker 1: family reunion. Like how freaking cool is that. It's awesome
- 36:49Speaker 1: to have a job that you love and you know,
- 36:50Speaker 1: I like yourself. I'm a big advocate of pursuing mental health,
- 36:55Speaker 1: and I think you know me growing up in a
- 36:57Speaker 1: small town in a very rural part of a state
- 37:00Speaker 1: of Arkansas, that we didn't know anyth about mental health
- 37:02Speaker 1: growing up. And then to watch you, you know, really
- 37:05Speaker 1: champion this cause and share your struggles with it like that,
- 37:08Speaker 1: that's inspiring for a guy like me. So I want
- 37:10Speaker 1: to first talk about the podcast, uh that it's called
- 37:14Speaker 1: Unbreakable and you even say it's a mental health podcast.
- 37:16Speaker 1: It's right there in the title, So you're letting everybody
- 37:18Speaker 1: know what's going on there. What exactly are you talking about?
- 37:21Speaker 1: And how are you discussing mental health on the podcast?
- 37:23Speaker 1: You know? And that's the thing that the whole thing
- 37:25Speaker 1: spawned from my book. You know, I'm Breakable how I
- 37:27Speaker 1: turned my depression anxiety in a motivation and you can too,
- 37:31Speaker 1: because I I made a decision a long time ago,
- 37:34Speaker 1: like I wasn't gonna let this thing beat me. And
- 37:36Speaker 1: I live in something that I call the gray that's
- 37:39Speaker 1: depression anxiety, that's throwing some a d D a little
- 37:42Speaker 1: bipolar if you can. I mean, I got it all
- 37:44Speaker 1: and it's my earliest childhood memory. Like I didn't sign
- 37:47Speaker 1: up for this, I didn't ask for this, but it
- 37:50Speaker 1: man it's every single day in my life. It is
- 37:53Speaker 1: hard for me to get out of bed in the morning.
- 37:55Speaker 1: I gotta make that decision. But you know, when you
- 37:58Speaker 1: live in the gray, um man, it's like you wake
- 38:03Speaker 1: up every morning thinking the world hates you, You're not
- 38:07Speaker 1: worthy of being loved. The sky is falling and it's
- 38:10Speaker 1: not real. And I know people at home probably going, oh,
- 38:12Speaker 1: what's this guy complained about? His life is great? Man,
- 38:15Speaker 1: My life is great, Like I'm not here with you,
- 38:17Speaker 1: are you kidding me? But between my ears sucks. So
- 38:20Speaker 1: for all these years, I like created this character on
- 38:24Speaker 1: TV at the Glaze, you know, and you know, fighting
- 38:26Speaker 1: and football and ballers and doing all this, and I
- 38:28Speaker 1: was just I hit it. I just suffered in silence
- 38:31Speaker 1: all these years. And I wish I spoke up earlier
- 38:34Speaker 1: because of all the people I've could have helped. But
- 38:36Speaker 1: also I would have had a better team to walk
- 38:39Speaker 1: this walk with together, and I would have been able
- 38:42Speaker 1: to handle it a lot better than the ways I
- 38:44Speaker 1: handle it, which the ways I handle in the past.
- 38:47Speaker 1: We're not healthy for me or other people. You know.
- 38:49Speaker 1: We spent so much time talking about our physical fitness
- 38:51Speaker 1: and again I've been uh, someone who was uneducated on
- 38:55Speaker 1: it for a long time until I started experiencing things myself.
- 38:58Speaker 1: But we do all this happen. You know, to work
- 39:00Speaker 1: out how to eat, and that is a big part
- 39:02Speaker 1: of health, but it ain't all a health. And I've
- 39:04Speaker 1: learned this as well. And if you're not mentally healthy
- 39:06Speaker 1: and you're not working in your mental health, it's almost
- 39:08Speaker 1: hard to get healthy physically because if you're not all
- 39:13Speaker 1: in up top, it's hard to be all in at all. Yeah,
- 39:16Speaker 1: when the roommates in my head are not playing along
- 39:17Speaker 1: nicely together, man, everything hurts. And so when I have
- 39:20Speaker 1: these periods of the gray that I call them, Um,
- 39:24Speaker 1: it's I get a visceral physical reaction with my depression.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Anxiety hit bad. I feel it actually in my joints
- 39:32Speaker 1: on the left side of my gut and behind my
- 39:35Speaker 1: rib cage and that that pains very real for me,
- 39:38Speaker 1: and it's something that I handle every single day. And um,
- 39:41Speaker 1: you're right, you know. Mental health is so reactive these days, right,
- 39:46Speaker 1: physical health, Like, man, you're gonna go to the gym
- 39:48Speaker 1: because you want to get yourself bigger. It's every day, right,
- 39:50Speaker 1: or stronger cardio whatever that that is, right, Like I
- 39:54Speaker 1: just talked to football teams and say, you guys, don't
- 39:56Speaker 1: only catch passes when you have the drops, you throw
- 39:59Speaker 1: them and catch the multi up mental health, we only
- 40:02Speaker 1: go to see a therapist when the sky has fallen,
- 40:04Speaker 1: and that's sometimes too late. So I'm trying to get
- 40:07Speaker 1: out ahead of it. You know, we talked mental health.
- 40:09Speaker 1: The reason why I wrote this book and the reason
- 40:11Speaker 1: why I'm doing this podcast is I want to give
- 40:13Speaker 1: it words. I want to give people words to be
- 40:16Speaker 1: able to start having the conversation too, you know. And
- 40:19Speaker 1: it's incredible the reaction I've had. I've had grandmother's reach
- 40:23Speaker 1: out saying thank you. For the first time in eighty years,
- 40:28Speaker 1: I could have this conversation and tell my husband and
- 40:32Speaker 1: kids and grandkids what I've been going through. A lot
- 40:36Speaker 1: of girl dads saying like I don't have it, and
- 40:39Speaker 1: I'm thinking like, yeah, yeah, yeah, you do. But then
- 40:42Speaker 1: but my daughter does. But now I'm able to have
- 40:45Speaker 1: the conversation. And i want to make this distinction very clear.
- 40:47Speaker 1: I don't talk. I'm not a therapist. I'm not a doctor.
- 40:50Speaker 1: I'm not a teacher. Um, I'm just a dude who's
- 40:52Speaker 1: messed up, who's learning how to be good with his
- 40:54Speaker 1: messed up nous, And you don't have to have my level,
- 40:58Speaker 1: which is clinical. And that's why, I guess allows me
- 41:00Speaker 1: to talk about it. I have clinical depression anxiety, and
- 41:03Speaker 1: and then I hit all these years. But we're all
- 41:05Speaker 1: going through something these days. Man. Social media makes us
- 41:08Speaker 1: all think our lives suck. Like we're comparing ourselves to
- 41:11Speaker 1: everybody else's filtered fraction of a second of a day,
- 41:15Speaker 1: and we're going, man, how come my food doesn't look
- 41:18Speaker 1: like that? Why am I not at that party? Like
- 41:20Speaker 1: we feel left out? Or on Twitter we see so
- 41:24Speaker 1: much hate and bullying. And when I got bullying on
- 41:27Speaker 1: the playground growing up, it sucked for a month. But
- 41:30Speaker 1: now we're seeing in a thousand times a second on Twitter,
- 41:33Speaker 1: so it's just a scarier world. So you don't have
- 41:35Speaker 1: that my level. All right, we're all going through some
- 41:38Speaker 1: sort of gray, And like I said, my job now
- 41:40Speaker 1: is you know, I felt cursed for all these years,
- 41:43Speaker 1: but now I feel like God bless me with depression
- 41:46Speaker 1: anxiety so I could give other people a voice to
- 41:50Speaker 1: hopefully help them through their pain, because man, we deserve it.
- 41:53Speaker 1: We don't deserve for this great wind screw that like
- 41:56Speaker 1: I deserve to live in the blue. We all do.
- 41:58Speaker 1: I wonder what attorney point was as far as you
- 42:00Speaker 1: mentioned the glaze and this larger than life character that
- 42:04Speaker 1: you presented. But that was your job, right, I bet
- 42:06Speaker 1: I do this too. Like other days, I don't feel good,
- 42:08Speaker 1: but I gotta come and do a national show. And you,
- 42:11Speaker 1: you gotta be who people are are tuning in to
- 42:14Speaker 1: see you tuning into here. But for you, not only
- 42:17Speaker 1: were you this larger than life person, but there's m
- 42:19Speaker 1: m A, there's football. It's a very macho thing that
- 42:22Speaker 1: you're a part of. And when was it for you
- 42:26Speaker 1: that you went? You know what? I just have to
- 42:27Speaker 1: be uncomfortably vulnerable because if I don't like I'm not
- 42:32Speaker 1: actually sharing who I really am? What was that turning
- 42:34Speaker 1: point for you? I started going down worse and worse
- 42:37Speaker 1: roads here as I've gotten older. You know, people think
- 42:39Speaker 1: that you hit success. I thought, and here's the thing
- 42:42Speaker 1: like for me, That's why I say in the book title,
- 42:45Speaker 1: how I use it to motivate me. I'm not able,
- 42:48Speaker 1: Like I don't know what it's like to feel love
- 42:50Speaker 1: from the inside out. I've never felt worthy of being love,
- 42:52Speaker 1: which sucks. Man. It's lonely. I want to be loved.
- 42:56Speaker 1: So it's as a result worst minted do all these big,
- 43:00Speaker 1: great things on the outside, like we're in the I'm
- 43:02Speaker 1: in the TV Hall of Fame. I was the first
- 43:04Speaker 1: mm A host of a nationals mm A show in
- 43:07Speaker 1: America doing five years and ballers with the rock who
- 43:10Speaker 1: wrote the forward for my book is how important this is.
- 43:13Speaker 1: So it's forced me to go do all these great
- 43:15Speaker 1: things on the outside. Two Steel loved and I thought, man,
- 43:21Speaker 1: once I kind of made it, and I'd have some
- 43:24Speaker 1: money because I would. And listen, I've been on both ends.
- 43:27Speaker 1: The first eleven years of my career. I was making
- 43:29Speaker 1: nineties seven hundred bucks a year living in New York City.
- 43:33Speaker 1: That sucks. I don't understand what it's like to be broken.
- 43:35Speaker 1: And I worked my butt off to be unbreakable, if
- 43:38Speaker 1: you will, because I needed to find that outside love
- 43:41Speaker 1: to help lift me up. And and I just didn't
- 43:44Speaker 1: work like that, Like the outside stuff didn't really fulfill me.
- 43:48Speaker 1: So I kind of got sick of it. Man, I
- 43:50Speaker 1: got sick of waking up every day. And you know,
- 43:53Speaker 1: one of the things I read about the book is
- 43:54Speaker 1: that I need a team and I've had fight teams
- 43:57Speaker 1: in different teams to help me through. And I said,
- 43:58Speaker 1: you know what, I'm gonna start talking about it because
- 44:01Speaker 1: more I could talk about it, I'll get a bunch
- 44:03Speaker 1: of more teammates out there that we can walk this
- 44:05Speaker 1: walk together and and it will help me through. And
- 44:09Speaker 1: I've needed the help as much as I'm helping others.
- 44:11Speaker 1: I need to help just as much. I want to
- 44:13Speaker 1: encourage you guys to check out Unbreakable how I turn
- 44:15Speaker 1: my depression anxiety and a motivation, and you can to
- 44:18Speaker 1: buy a Jay Glazer and then the podcast which is
- 44:21Speaker 1: Unbreakable with Jay Glazer and Minnal Health podcast. They are
- 44:24Speaker 1: both uh the first episode, Sean McVeigh, I asked him,
- 44:27Speaker 1: you've got some really like someone like me would consider
- 44:30Speaker 1: really cool relationships. And is Shan a friend of yours
- 44:33Speaker 1: who wanted so in the book, um when I described
- 44:37Speaker 1: the gray. We're in Mexico, myself, him, and Andrew Whitworth
- 44:41Speaker 1: and we're trying to describe to him what depression anxiety is.
- 44:45Speaker 1: And Sean, man, his life is like a nightlight, you know.
- 44:47Speaker 1: He's like, like the worst thing that ever happened to
- 44:50Speaker 1: Sean is he didn't win the Super Bowl in his
- 44:53Speaker 1: second year ever as the youngest head coach in NFL history. Um,
- 44:57Speaker 1: and like his parents look like the people who are
- 44:59Speaker 1: picture frames you buying freaking target. You know, it's like
- 45:02Speaker 1: his He don't understand childhood druma or anything like that.
- 45:04Speaker 1: So we start. He starts really deep diving explaining. So
- 45:07Speaker 1: I thought it was a good way for me to
- 45:08Speaker 1: explain it. Trying to explain to the Super Bowl winning
- 45:12Speaker 1: head coach of what it's like to have depression, anxiety
- 45:14Speaker 1: and the gray and Andrew Whitworth, who's his captain, his
- 45:17Speaker 1: left tackle, who's the Walter Payton Man of the Year
- 45:20Speaker 1: award winner. He starts talking about it and Sean goes, wait,
- 45:23Speaker 1: you too. He's like, Sean, what do you think gets me,
- 45:28Speaker 1: at forty years of age to still pound my head
- 45:30Speaker 1: into Aaron Donald every day? Yeah, dude, I'm messed up, absolutely,
- 45:34Speaker 1: we all are. So we were trying to explain to
- 45:37Speaker 1: this Sean that it's not just your locker room, it's
- 45:39Speaker 1: everybody around you and where you gotta start, which will
- 45:43Speaker 1: I said Sean, thinking how great of a coach you
- 45:45Speaker 1: could be if you could start learning how to be
- 45:47Speaker 1: vulnerable and you can start leaning into other people and started,
- 45:51Speaker 1: you know, the attachment that I now have. Uh. And
- 45:54Speaker 1: I'll tell you a story after this about me and
- 45:56Speaker 1: Michael strand Um, who was my best friend you know
- 45:59Speaker 1: for earty years but to day that I hit it from.
- 46:02Speaker 1: But I said, man, imagine how much better for coaches
- 46:04Speaker 1: will make you. Well. Last year they go oh for
- 46:06Speaker 1: November during the Super Bowl run, and he was struggling,
- 46:12Speaker 1: and people don't know I would actually go out to
- 46:14Speaker 1: his house. I was I was to turn about him,
- 46:17Speaker 1: and I went to his house a couple of times
- 46:19Speaker 1: during that period just to get him to start being
- 46:22Speaker 1: vulnerable and opening up to people on his team and
- 46:25Speaker 1: his staff. And he did, and he really started opening
- 46:28Speaker 1: up to two things that he was struggling with and
- 46:31Speaker 1: that helped really helped bomb them together. And then they
- 46:34Speaker 1: went on a Super Bowl run and it just made
- 46:37Speaker 1: him a better coach and a better Now he's a
- 46:39Speaker 1: husband now, better friends, better everything. So it's pretty cool.
- 46:43Speaker 1: I got to Yeah, these relationships in the most dudely
- 46:46Speaker 1: of worlds, right Like, I look at it like no
- 46:49Speaker 1: one's questioned my manhood. I fought for years. I coached
- 46:52Speaker 1: for years, do football ball there's all so no one's
- 46:55Speaker 1: question of my manager. So I could cry to you
- 46:57Speaker 1: on the drop of a dime, I'm good. What's the
- 47:00Speaker 1: Stray hand story? So man again, this guy is is
- 47:04Speaker 1: my best friend since he and I lasted on each other.
- 47:09Speaker 1: And in those broke years, I didn't have enough money
- 47:13Speaker 1: to go from I had to go to Giant Stadium
- 47:15Speaker 1: every day to work to be a reporter. I didn't
- 47:18Speaker 1: have enough money to take a subway to a bus
- 47:21Speaker 1: to Giants Stadium and back every day. So Stray drove
- 47:24Speaker 1: me back into New York City every freaking day for
- 47:28Speaker 1: like nine years. So I own like eight granted Lincoln
- 47:31Speaker 1: Tubtle fair right, So so for years, um, and I
- 47:36Speaker 1: had this from my whole team, except how we long? Um,
- 47:43Speaker 1: how you could tell when I was having I would
- 47:46Speaker 1: I would have these anxiety attacks before the show and
- 47:49Speaker 1: some mental breakdown sometimes, And how are you go, hey, hey, hey, hey,
- 47:52Speaker 1: sky is not falling. The sky is not falling because
- 47:55Speaker 1: because how he's messed up too yet you gotta be
- 47:56Speaker 1: messed up to be that violent of a football player.
- 47:59Speaker 1: But so last year, thirty years, okay, Stray and I
- 48:03Speaker 1: are supposed to go out to dinner and man, the
- 48:07Speaker 1: beast just got out of the box and my anxiety.
- 48:10Speaker 1: I got woken up in the middle of night by
- 48:12Speaker 1: an anxiety attack. Like how unfair is that? And like
- 48:16Speaker 1: I didn't do anything, There wasn't anything that triggered me.
- 48:18Speaker 1: It woke me up. And man, I just felt like
- 48:20Speaker 1: my world was ending and it freaking sucked. And like
- 48:25Speaker 1: I said, it takes so much out of me physically
- 48:27Speaker 1: when it happens. So for the first time in thirty years,
- 48:31Speaker 1: I'm supposed to go out to dinner with straight, and
- 48:32Speaker 1: I said, man, I can't go to dinner tonight. In
- 48:36Speaker 1: the past, when this happened, I would use viking in
- 48:41Speaker 1: an alcohol and just hide it and uh. And that
- 48:46Speaker 1: would usually be a lot more dangerous because I started
- 48:49Speaker 1: to get a little fifty, you know, and start snatching people.
- 48:52Speaker 1: And I'm not I'm not the most pleasant person on
- 48:54Speaker 1: that Um. So for the first time, at thirty years,
- 48:58Speaker 1: I said, straight, can't go to dinner tonight, ma'am. The
- 49:00Speaker 1: beast just got out of the box. And he said,
- 49:05Speaker 1: you want you, I'm gonna come over. I said, um,
- 49:09Speaker 1: not this time. I think I just gotta get back
- 49:11Speaker 1: to bed. And he said, you want to talk about it.
- 49:14Speaker 1: I said, I do, but not right now. And then
- 49:17Speaker 1: he said to me, why have you never told me
- 49:20Speaker 1: about this? I'm your best friend. Said, man, I don't
- 49:24Speaker 1: make up the rules of this thing, bro, whatever reason,
- 49:27Speaker 1: I felt ashamed with you. And he's like, yeah, but
- 49:30Speaker 1: I you took my my ability to be your friend away.
- 49:36Speaker 1: I wish you had opened up. I got a little
- 49:38Speaker 1: choked up talking about it because had I been able
- 49:42Speaker 1: to open up to him for thirty years like I
- 49:44Speaker 1: am now, I would have had somebody that I could
- 49:47Speaker 1: have leaned on. I would have had somebody who can
- 49:48Speaker 1: help me out of that dark hole. Um. So, for
- 49:51Speaker 1: everybody out there listening, listen, every single person I've opened
- 49:54Speaker 1: up to about this, but I'm having bad days and
- 49:57Speaker 1: we just told me to suck it up, but he's
- 49:59Speaker 1: called me was. In fact, it's gotten us closer together.
- 50:02Speaker 1: And I would say the majority of my friends that
- 50:05Speaker 1: I've opened up to about it have then in turn
- 50:07Speaker 1: open up to me about something that they never know
- 50:10Speaker 1: they could they ever could have. Yes, it sounds like
- 50:12Speaker 1: your team is very important to Your friends are very
- 50:14Speaker 1: important to you. Your support group, which also that's a
- 50:18Speaker 1: that's a pillar in the book of like how to
- 50:19Speaker 1: get through this? Yeah, it's finding those teams I talk
- 50:22Speaker 1: about when I we'll speak or or you know, I
- 50:26Speaker 1: do a comedy slash kind of Ted talk where I
- 50:29Speaker 1: tore a bit and I talked about how, you know,
- 50:31Speaker 1: we're always afraid to ask for help, but if somebody
- 50:33Speaker 1: asked us for help, we do it in a second.
- 50:35Speaker 1: So if someone's ever like, hey, would you please help me? Absolutely,
- 50:37Speaker 1: I do it. But then why wouldn't you ask for
- 50:38Speaker 1: help if you need it? I don't want to bother people.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Oh I don't know my but it's almost you know,
- 50:44Speaker 1: lend that perspective to you having to reach out to
- 50:47Speaker 1: somebody because you would help somebody, So why would you
- 50:50Speaker 1: not ask somebody to lend you a hand? See, you
- 50:52Speaker 1: know what I do now, So now I have better
- 50:54Speaker 1: tools to deal with it. So again again I had
- 50:57Speaker 1: another night, and I don't know why this has been
- 50:59Speaker 1: happening lately, But again, like I said, like depression anxiety,
- 51:02Speaker 1: they pull a chair up whenever they damn well, please,
- 51:04Speaker 1: there's no there's no schedule. And for me also, I
- 51:08Speaker 1: have a panic attack every single time I've ever been
- 51:11Speaker 1: on TV. From two thousand and five to now as
- 51:14Speaker 1: I'm on that first segment only on our show, not
- 51:18Speaker 1: on somebody else's show, it's the weirdest thing, which was
- 51:21Speaker 1: really really strange, because man, I'm great in chaos, I
- 51:25Speaker 1: suck in calm. So I don't know why that happens.
- 51:29Speaker 1: It becomes a bitual. But so as I'm talking to
- 51:32Speaker 1: you on Sundays, every time that's first segment, I'm having
- 51:36Speaker 1: an anxiety attack and I'm I call it wrestling with
- 51:39Speaker 1: my abuser. And so what I do now when I
- 51:43Speaker 1: get woken up in the middle of the night by it,
- 51:47Speaker 1: or I have a really bad day, I will call
- 51:49Speaker 1: four friends and tell them, Man, I am freaking struggling today.
- 51:54Speaker 1: I just gotta tell somebody because this power numbers right,
- 51:57Speaker 1: So I started telling them, and then the other of
- 52:00Speaker 1: thing I do, like another one of my pillars is
- 52:02Speaker 1: being of service and being of service to me charity
- 52:05Speaker 1: or you know, helping in so many different ways. Um,
- 52:11Speaker 1: but I'll call four other friends and not telling them struggling,
- 52:16Speaker 1: just to check up on them. And that combination of
- 52:20Speaker 1: me calling people and having a team to help lift
- 52:23Speaker 1: me up and then meet checking up on others to
- 52:26Speaker 1: be of service to them, that really helps that Gray
- 52:30Speaker 1: take a hike Jalen Hurts And it seems like it
- 52:32Speaker 1: was just yesterday that the big the big debate was,
- 52:35Speaker 1: is Philly want to commit to Jalen Hurts as their quarterback?
- 52:37Speaker 1: Pull him, let him play trade? So what have we
- 52:39Speaker 1: learned though with how awesome he is now versus when
- 52:44Speaker 1: they were questioning if he could even beat the quarterback?
- 52:46Speaker 1: You know, I look for guys who worked their butts off,
- 52:48Speaker 1: and you know, buddy of mine used to coach for
- 52:51Speaker 1: me and Unbreakable, my gym in l A coaches him
- 52:54Speaker 1: down there, trains him and he's like, dude, this kid
- 52:57Speaker 1: just NonStop, NonStop works. So you know, his thing was accuracy.
- 53:02Speaker 1: It's really hard to become more accurate as time goes on.
- 53:06Speaker 1: But you know, were they were they looking to replace
- 53:10Speaker 1: him at a time, Yeah, yeah, absolutely, Um, they're trying
- 53:13Speaker 1: to upgrade if they thought but as he continued to
- 53:15Speaker 1: work at this work of this work of this, I
- 53:17Speaker 1: thought they're gonna be a turnaround team this year, not
- 53:20Speaker 1: as much for the talent they brought in, but for
- 53:24Speaker 1: the fact that last year with the head coach, nick'sy reality,
- 53:27Speaker 1: they're all kind of like, uh, does this guy really
- 53:30Speaker 1: know what he's doing. Should he have got the job?
- 53:34Speaker 1: Where are we going here? And now they're all bought it.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Now they're like, okay, he's a king man in chart
- 53:39Speaker 1: we follow, We're good. So they had just a different
- 53:41Speaker 1: confidence about them. Unbreakable with Jay Glazer. It's a podcast.
- 53:45Speaker 1: You can go and actually check that out today and
- 53:47Speaker 1: you can order the book I'm Breakable How I try
- 53:49Speaker 1: my depression anxiety into motivation and you can too. Hey,
- 53:52Speaker 1: just appreciate how candid you are about struggle in general.
- 53:55Speaker 1: It's not easy. Vulnerability is a really hard thing to learn,
- 54:00Speaker 1: very empowering thing which you can understand and see the
- 54:03Speaker 1: effects that has on other people in the strength that
- 54:04Speaker 1: you get from them. So I think you have inspired
- 54:07Speaker 1: so many and so many more with the podcast, And
- 54:09Speaker 1: thank you for your time and thank you for your afterpay.
- 54:12Speaker 1: And I appreciate it. Also, like one people understanding I'm
- 54:14Speaker 1: talking about the heavy stuff, but I'm also we're gonna laugh,
- 54:17Speaker 1: Like laughter helps me through it too. So if you
- 54:19Speaker 1: read the book, you listen to podcast, let do some
- 54:21Speaker 1: happy stuff. But you're definitely got some laughter in there too,
- 54:23Speaker 1: because I think the gray hates laughter at Jay Glazer
- 54:26Speaker 1: on the Socials. Well, be looking forward to It's j
- 54:28Speaker 1: C on TV again. Dude, Thank you, brother buddy, thanks
- 54:31Speaker 1: for listening to this episode where I get to highlight
