- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: Hey friend, welcome back to Bible Trek Echoes.
- 0:02[SPEAKER_01]: I'm Mike and McCree, you're host.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much for joining me once again today.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_01]: Take your Bibles, if you wouldn't, and go to the book of Acts on a read of one verse here.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then we're gonna flip over to the book of Ephesians.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_01]: I've got a lot to get through today and tomorrow.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_01]: Hope you enjoyed the previous couple of episodes.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_01]: This week of Bible Trek Echoes, but we're gonna jump right in.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_01]: And we're gonna talk about something
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: in a lot of Bible studies.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: It'd be very careful to preach the Bible in context.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm not going to be saying something that's just so wild and out there that I found some new doctrine that no one's ever seen before, not that at all.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_01]: But we're going to be talking about the Holy Ghost, about the Holy Spirit, in Acts 1 verse 8, the Bible says this,
- 0:49[SPEAKER_01]: but ye shall receive power.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: After that the Holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witnesses unto me, both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the utmost part of the earth.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_01]: Oftentimes we talk about God, we talk about Jesus, but we very rarely reference or talk about the Holy Ghost and realize of course the Trinity is just that it's
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you've ever seen a stool with three legs before, or if you've ever sat on one.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_01]: But if you have a stool with three legs, or a tripod, maybe holding a camera up, if you think about it, if you take out one of those legs, then the entire structure is going, it's bound to fall over.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_01]: And oftentimes, as Christians, we ignore the Holy Ghost.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to talk about him for just a little while today.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe another time we'll do a little more teaching on the Holy Ghost, but I want to talk to you about the effects of the Holy Ghost, how God affects you, how the Holy Ghost Holy Spirit, the third part, often the forgotten part of the Trinity, will affect you.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: Ephesians chapter five and verse 18 says this, Ephesians chapter five and verse 18, and be not drunk with wine.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: Wherein is excess, but be filled with the spirit, speaking to yourselves in Psalms and hymns and spiritual Psalms, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving things always for all things, unto God and the Father,
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and then verse 21, submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_01]: Now I've noticed this.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: When you interact with the world, you always in some former fashion end up infected.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: What do I mean by that?
- 2:57[SPEAKER_01]: Well, James I verse 14 says, but every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed, then when lust has conceived bringeth forth sin and sin, when it is finished bringeth forth
- 3:11[SPEAKER_01]: death, the world, the flesh and the devil, always seem to stick to us.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: Think about this.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: Have you ever done a backyard barbecue, or maybe you're on the 4th of July, you've grilled some burgers and some brots, and you had a bonfire or something like that?
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: What's amazing?
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: When you spend time around a fire, what do your clothes end up smelling like?
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: You can smell that burning, right?
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: You can smell effect.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_01]: You've been around a fire.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: The same is true for the world.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: When you spend time around the world, you start smelling like it.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: You start sounding like it.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: You start talking like it because the world,
- 3:59[SPEAKER_01]: at not letting the world infect us.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: See, the world infects, but God affects.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: You see, every time in Scripture someone had an encounter with God, God affected them.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: Think about Jacob in the Old Testament when he wrestled with God.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: What ended up happening?
- 4:19[SPEAKER_01]: Well, he walked the rest of his life with a limp.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: Jacob wrestled.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: and he had a limp because he encountered God.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: Jonah ran from God and he ended up waterlogged.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: Didn't he?
- 4:32[SPEAKER_01]: He ended up looking like a prune or worse coming out of the belly of that fish because he ran from God, but he most certainly had an encounter with God.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: Miriam, she rebelled against God's man, and she ended up leporous.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: You understand, friend?
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: All two scripture, everyone that has an encounter with God ends up affected and that's truth the Holy Ghost, but it's also true, yes, God, Jehovah, God, but also Jesus, think about when Jesus showed up at that wedding.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: The very first recorded miracle that he did.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: The beverages were taken care of.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: The master of the feast said, how is it that you hold back the best?
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: This is the freshest juice.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_01]: This is wonderful.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: Why did you, why did you, well, what happened was they hadn't encountered with Jesus.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: When Jesus was touched by that suffering woman, remember she just touched a few threads, the hem of his garment.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_01]: her blood issue was cleared up.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: When Jesus showed up at Lazarus's grave, his body was completely restored.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: And that leads us to Ephesians chapter 5 and verse 18.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: We looked at God.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: We looked at Jesus.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: Let's look at the Holy Spirit.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_01]: All three are one.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to focus in on verse 18 of Ephesians 5.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: And be not drunk with wine.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_01]: wherein is excess, but be filled with the spirit.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: Looking back, we read that one verse, Acts 1, 8, and I've been doing the little study at my home church when I'm there preaching through the first few chapters of the book of Acts, and
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: We, we've doing a little mini-series, and that's where I actually this thought comes from from the role, the working of the Holy Spirit, and what the Holy Ghost does to us, how he affects us.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_01]: And as you look at what God did, what God's people did, through the book of Acts, you realize that motivation alone could not do what happened in the book of Acts.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: It had to be an act of God.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: The Holy Ghost is what changed people and what allowed people to change the world.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_01]: R.A. Torrey once said this, some unparifraising here, but he said the church has often tried to substitute talent, intellect, organization, and excitement for the power of the Holy Ghost.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: Friend, there are some non-negotiables in the Christian life.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_01]: There is no amount of of charisma or ability or pulpit ability that could ever compensate for a lack of Holy Spirit filling.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: We have mastered presentation sometimes, but we neglect power.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: Just very quickly, we're going to talk about this today and tomorrow, but just to make sure I am not at all confusing anyone Understand that filling the filling of the Holy Ghost
- 7:45[SPEAKER_01]: It is not emotional manipulation, it's not hype, it's not volume and loudness, it's not personality, it's not charisma, it's not manufactured, it's excitement.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_01]: I've known some loud people that they say a man and they agree vociferously.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: with the preacher, but they live very fleshly Monday through Saturday.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_01]: But I've also known some very quiet people that are very spirit filled.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: But let's look at verse 18.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: Let's break down for just a moment tomorrow on the broadcast.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to look at three ways the Holy Spirit actually affects us.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: But by way of introduction, just a two day little series here,
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: But as we look at this, look at what God allowed Paul to say about the Holy Spirit and being filled with the Spirit.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: There is no preacher alive that would be brave enough to compare the working of the Holy Ghost to being drunk, to being liquored up.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: If it wasn't for Paul, under the auspices and leading of the Holy Ghost Himself, if he hadn't done it first, what does Paul, with God's leading say in Ephesians 518, and being not drunk with wine?
- 9:11[SPEAKER_01]: Wherein' is excess, but be filled with a spirit.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_01]: It reminds me, had the opportunity to drive back from North Carolina not long ago with one of our staff men, but a Cameron wedge.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: He does a wonderful job with our video production.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_01]: He's our video production lead and just does a wonderful job with that.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: but we were doing a gospel film in North Carolina and we had a long drive back to Illinois.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: And because of the long drive about 12 hours or so, we had a lot of time to talk.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: And Cameron's guy great stories.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: He has had an interesting life, but one of the things he got to do before coming to work on staff at BTI,
- 9:51[SPEAKER_01]: He was an assistant pastor in Lintin, Indiana.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: Now, kind of out in the, out in the Boonies just a little bit, small town living, beautiful area, wonderful people, but it's definitely a rural area.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_01]: And because of that, golf carts and, you know, Polaris Rangers and things like that, and lawnmowers even are allowed to be driven on the roads there in Lintin, Indiana.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: In that neck of the woods, I've got multiple pastor friends there,
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: And Cameron was one of them.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_01]: And just the way the Lord worked it out.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: I was great friends with his pastor.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: And as a Lord was leading us to open this film, division with gospel films.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: God led Cameron across my radar.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: I talked to his pastor.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: And we were able to bring him on staff.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_01]: But he recalled a funny story from his time in it.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: They had special vehicles that were driven by a certain class of people.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_01]: these special vehicles they looked like just a lawnmower tractor just you know those like John deer craftsmen whatever it might be just those little lawnmowers you know you write around that's what they looked like but they were called dobees d u
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: I do these.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: Those were driven by a class of people that had lost their license because they had gotten pulled over for drunk driving lost their license and the only way they could get to the store was by driving a lawnmower because if they drove their car again they get pulled over in tone and jail.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: And so they called them, do wease?
- 11:32[SPEAKER_01]: Driven by people that had gotten DUIs.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not trying to make a light of that.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: My point is this, when you are filled with drink, when you're filled with liquor, it changes the way you act.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_01]: It changes the way you talk.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen some big, burly men that have broken down in tears.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_01]: They never would have done it if they didn't have so much alcohol in the system.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen some small men, the very meek and mild, but they became very big and bragged osious because I got some liquor in their system.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: When you are filled with drink, when you're filled with alcohol, it changes the way you would act naturally and in the same way.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_01]: When you're filled with the spirit, it affects you.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to talk about that a little bit more tomorrow and we're going to look at three different ways that the Holy Spirit, when he fills you, how it affects you, the world infects.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: But thankfully the Holy Spirit affects.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: And we're going to look at that tomorrow on the broadcast.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much for listening to Bible-track echoes today.
