- 0:00Welcome back to Cafe or it is our last live coaches show of the season
- 0:04with Gino. Our last year will be March the seventh. That will be
- 0:07recorded ahead of the final hockey game of the season for the men. They
- 0:11take on Vermont on the seventh, and in fact they're taking on bu tomorrow.
- 0:16Will be on the air six to forty five. Adam Jerdino joins me
- 0:18for that, and then we've got the men on Saturday, men's basketball at
- 0:21Villanova. Perhaps you heard game Days coming to stores on Saturday between what is
- 0:26it ten and noon on Saturday, and then they play Saturday night and then
- 0:29we're in Chicago on Sunday. By the way, today is a big anniversary
- 0:34in sports history. Where were you forty four years ago when you heard that
- 0:37the Soviet when the US hockey team beat the Soviets in the Olympics in nineteen
- 0:42eighty Wow, probably forty four to see fifty four or sixty four, I
- 0:49like a help a bunch of other people probably watching the game on TV in
- 0:52the Olympics because we were watching the Olympics. You were in a uva nineteen
- 0:56eighty were you? Where were you a year eighty? Nineteen eighty Where were
- 0:59you? No, I was. I was strolling in Narstown. I was
- 1:02still I got to University of Virginia in May of eighty one. Okay,
- 1:10May of eighty one. Yep. And you might remember that game was take
- 1:14the lead too. That was a five o'clock Eastern start. It's crazy.
- 1:17Yeah, well the Soviets didn't want to push back to eight o'clock. They're
- 1:21lost, right right, you're freshmen. You mentioned this, This was a
- 1:26time period to get a significant time off, and your freshmen need it.
- 1:30KK has been a bit of a rut. I mean, Ashland's played through
- 1:33it well, but can you see the wear and tear on them on those
- 1:37two in particularly because they're loged a ton of minutes, actually played forty on
- 1:41Monday. Oh yeah, yeah, you can see it in practice. They
- 1:45run into each other like they're both delirious, you know, they just put
- 1:49their like it's time to cut, they just go, you know, and
- 1:55it's natural. You know, by now their season will be almost over.
- 2:02Actually for a lot of kids you know that started early enough. This is
- 2:07the most games they would have played, yeah, in high school, and
- 2:13so the pressure of playing you know, college basketball and playing at Yukon And
- 2:19and then imagine this. You know, you're you're let's say you're kk Arnold
- 2:23and we're playing somebody and they've got one person guarding page really hard. They
- 2:31got somebody guarding uh Nika, they got somebody guarding ash, and they got
- 2:38somebody guarding a Leah, And the guy that's supposed to be guarding you is
- 2:42just running around helping all those other guys. And every time you catch it,
- 2:46you're wide open. So that one game she made what for I think
- 2:53that's the most she's made this year. She made four threes something like that.
- 2:57Yeah, you know. And so when they're going in, you like
- 3:01you can't wait to get the ball, and you're like, yeah, give
- 3:02it to me, I'm wide open. And then these kids are a little
- 3:07bit you know, skiddish. Sometimes when the ball doesn't go in, they
- 3:13get all whacked out and then they start doing crazy things instead of just shoot
- 3:16it. She's in right now, so right now, yeah, right now.
- 3:22And it's never like all of a sudden, you know, what's wrong
- 3:24with my shot. There's nothing wrong with the shot. It's mentally, you
- 3:29know, you're in a different place, you know, it's it's like a
- 3:32guy who you know makes every put on Saturday or Sunday playing weekend golf and
- 3:38then goes back the next Saturday and Sunday and misses all of them. It
- 3:43just it's not like anything's changed. It's just you know, some days you're
- 3:46in or some weeks, you know, you you were in a slump.
- 3:53Yep, you know, and you just got to work your way out of
- 3:57it. That's it. You got to work work your way out of it.
- 4:00Jada's first. Some of the injured players go. I mean, Jenna
- 4:03tore her achilles back in the summertime. What is she doing though? Is
- 4:06far his rehab, she's right now. She's at the point where she does
- 4:14warm ups with our team in practice, she does individual workouts, she can
- 4:19do certain things. She can run, she can shoot, she can do
- 4:29some cutting drills. So far, there's not been any contact, you know,
- 4:38anybody that's had those. It's it's about ten months, you know,
- 4:44almost a year that those achilles take. It's been a Wilson's Ukon's had an
- 4:48achilles. Oh. Nikisha said, she's the only one we ever the only
- 4:51other one we ever had. Yeah, so it's about a year, you
- 4:55know, it's it's it takes about, you know, about a year,
- 5:00unless you're a wacko like Aaron Rodgers and you think you've been do it,
- 5:03you know, in four months. But most normal people it takes a year.
- 5:11But she's exactly where she needs to be right now. She looks great.
- 5:15You know, she's she's getting a lot of shots up and just does
- 5:18her rehab every day. Yeah, the same thing. You know, she
- 5:23gets her rehab done, you know, gets a lot of shots up.
- 5:30It's you know, it's it's it's really difficult watching them, you know,
- 5:36on the sideline or in practice when they can't contribute, they can't perform.
- 5:42The look on their faces they're so it's almost like they're sad. It's like
- 5:48Page last year to an extent. No, they're not annoying. They don't
- 6:00say much with her. You had to put up with whatever, whatever came
- 6:04out of her mouth. You had to put up with that. No,
- 6:09it's just this, you know, like they all they all walk around like
- 6:13they lost her puppy. You know, they watch practice and that's the one
- 6:16thing they want to be doing and they can't do it. She does personality,
- 6:19Like, what can you tell us about her? Jenna Yeah, there's
- 6:25just not a lot of kids like her, you know when you come.
- 6:29I mean, how many kids have played in Division one college basketball from Egypt?
- 6:34Right? Not many, if any in women's basketball. Uh. So
- 6:40she's courageous, she's strong, she's confident, she's got a great personality.
- 6:46Every kid on the team loves her. She's always got a smile on her
- 6:51face. She her dad's a national team coach, and she's built like you
- 6:59know her dad. It's a big dude. And she's big and she loves
- 7:04And that's why we don't let her have any contact right now, because she
- 7:10loves the contact. She loves that kind of stuff. She loves playing like
- 7:16that. And you were telling me at some point, was it during the
- 7:20season when she got hurt? That was big obviously the program, But you're
- 7:25also telling me that the coaches that you had heard from at the World's at
- 7:29World championshipeah, she played really well. Yeah. At the World Championship twenty
- 7:32and under she had just turned what she had just turned eighteen maybe, and
- 7:39she was the best player out there by far, by far. And these
- 7:45are the best eight twenty and under players in the world, including the US
- 7:48and every coach that came back said she was the best player there. So
- 7:56does she have some range too? Yeah? Yeah, and that's kind of
- 8:00what's been missing, you know since weasts graduated. A big hit that can
- 8:05make threes consistently, consistently. Yeah, dork was decent at it. Dorca
- 8:09was, Yeah, Dorca was. That's not really what she wanted to do,
- 8:18but yeah, we had We haven't had that in a while. And
- 8:24the physicality that she has, that's why I thought her getting injured this year
- 8:28was was really difficult because the physicalness that we would have had with her and
- 8:33Alida together would have helped us in those matchups with those big teams. Yeah,
- 8:39you know that we played before we get to break. What did you
- 8:43learn about your team, if anything different when you went down to Columbia a
- 8:46couple of weeks ago when we said we we talked about this pregame too the
- 8:56day game after they fought and claude as you would expect, Yeah, we're
- 9:01dumb. Yeah, yeah, I learned that. It reiterated to me that
- 9:05we're dumb. Did they speed you up at all offensively or do or was
- 9:09it that the effect of your team took too Because you mentioned and some of
- 9:13the breaks, I think, yeah, but we sped. We wanted to
- 9:16speed it up. Okay, we wanted to play fast, and there were
- 9:20times when I think us playing fast caught them by surprise how fast the pace
- 9:26of the game was. We just you know, we just it's it's bad
- 9:35bad coaching, bad direction, because we just do dumb stuff, you know,
- 9:41Like that game we had, it was like an eleven point game or
- 9:52something like that, a thirteen point game, and Page had a wide open
- 9:58three that probably she makes her her eyes closed. Probably, well you charge,
- 10:01so probably second or third quarter you're talking right, ye, third quarter?
- 10:03Yeah, third quarter? I think I remember this. Yeah, she's
- 10:05wide open and she makes that it's eleven? Was it kind of transition to
- 10:11yeah, okay, yeah, all right, yeah, all right, if
- 10:13she makes that it's eleven, we come down, we get a stop.
- 10:18Then we come down and Nika looks like she's scrambling in the pocket, like
- 10:24she's dribbling the ball in the flour. Three guys are chasing her, and
- 10:26she tries to throw a pass that God knows who, they get it,
- 10:30they go down, they make a three, and just like that, the
- 10:33game changed. So sometimes that's how quickly things get away from you. Page
- 10:39makes the three. It's eleven, we have the ball. Now we come
- 10:43down, we get another three. Now it's eight. Now, all of
- 10:46a sudden, you know, the whole complexion of how they want to play,
- 10:50how we want to play changes instead. It goes back to sixteen or
- 10:56whatever it was. And so it's de moralizing and deflating. But you have
- 11:01to be good enough to make those plays. And we weren't. We weren't.
- 11:07That's alders to it, all right, we weren't. We're not good
- 11:09enough to beat them right now more Gino. The ukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show,
- 11:13presented by Wells Fargo will continue from Cafe Or after this on Learfield.
