- 0:00Chapter 13 from the book of Zachariah.
- 0:04We'll start with a prayer. Dear Lord, please be with us as
- 0:07we read through this chapter and let the Holy Spirit open up our
- 0:12hearts and our minds and our thoughts to you.
- 0:14We ask this in Jesus name. So it begins, chapter 13.
- 0:20On that day a fountain will be opened to the House of David and
- 0:25the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and
- 0:30impurity. On that day I will banish the
- 0:33names of the idols from the land, and they will be
- 0:37remembered no more, declares the Lord Almighty.
- 0:41I will remove both the prophets and the spirit of impurity from
- 0:45the land. And if anyone still prophecies,
- 0:49their father and mother to whom they were born will say to them,
- 0:54You must die because you have told lies in the Lord's name.
- 0:59Then their own parents will stab the one who prophesizes on that
- 1:04day. Every prophet will be ashamed of
- 1:06their prophetic vision. They will not put on prophet's
- 1:09garment of hair in order to deceive.
- 1:13Each will say I am not a prophet, I am a farmer.
- 1:16The land has been my livelihood since youth.
- 1:19If someone asks what are these wounds on your body, they will
- 1:23answer the wounds I was given at the House of my friends.
- 1:28Awake sword against my shepherd, against the man who is close to
- 1:33me, declares the Lord Almighty. Strike the shepherd, and the
- 1:38sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the
- 1:42little ones in the whole land, declares the Lord. 2/3 will be
- 1:47struck down and perish, yet 1/3 will be left in it.
- 1:53This third I will put into the fire.
- 1:56I will refine them like silver and test them like gold.
- 2:01They will call on my name and I will answer them.
- 2:06I will say they are my people and they will say the Lord is
- 2:10our God. Now that's the end of chapter
- 2:1313. I will read what the questions
- 2:16and answers are from the Study Bible.
- 2:18What is the significance of this fountain?
- 2:21In the Old Testament, water was necessary for ceremonial
- 2:24cleansing from sin. In the New Testament, the
- 2:27cleansing comes through the blood of Christ.
- 2:30But Jesus also talks about the living water, and so if you look
- 2:37that up, because it says on that day a fountain will be opened to
- 2:42the House of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to
- 2:46cleanse them from sin and impurity.
- 2:50So these are some of the verses where living water is talked
- 2:55about in Jeremiah chapter 2 verse 13.
- 2:58My people have committed 2 sins. They have forsaken me, the
- 3:02spring of living water. So here God is called the spring
- 3:07of living water and have dug their own cisterns, broken
- 3:11cisterns that cannot hold water. In Jeremiah 17 verse 13, it says
- 3:17Lord you are the hope of Israel. All who forsake you will be put
- 3:20to shame. Those who turn away from you
- 3:23will be ridden in the in the dust because they have forsaken
- 3:26the Lord, the spring of living water.
- 3:29So again, this is relating the the Lord to the spring of water.
- 3:34Then we have Zechariah 14, which will be the next chapter we come
- 3:37to. On that day, living water will
- 3:40flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half
- 3:45of it West to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter.
- 3:52Now here's where Jesus talks about the living water.
- 3:56In John chapter 4, verse 10, Jesus answered her, this is the
- 3:59woman at the well. If you knew the gift of God and
- 4:03who it is that ask you for a drink, He was referring to
- 4:07himself, you would have asked him and he would have given you
- 4:11living water. Verse 11, the next verse Sir,
- 4:16the woman said you have nothing to draw with and the well is
- 4:19deep. Where can you get this living
- 4:21water? And in Chapter 7, whoever
- 4:26believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water
- 4:30will flow from within them. I'm going to go back to John
- 4:34chapter 4 verse 11 though, because about the living water.
- 4:38So Sir, the woman said you have nothing to draw with and the
- 4:41well is deep. Where can you get this living
- 4:43water? Are you greater than our our
- 4:46father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself,
- 4:49as did his sons and his livestock?
- 4:52Jesus answered, Everyone who drinks this water will be
- 4:55thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them
- 4:59will never thirst. Indeed the water I give them
- 5:02will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal
- 5:08life. The woman said to him, Sir, give
- 5:11me this water so I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming
- 5:14here to draw the water. He told her Go call your husband
- 5:17and come back. And then it continues on where
- 5:21Jesus talks to this woman about her current situation and let's
- 5:28see, she does believe in in the Messiah called the Christ in
- 5:32verse 25, it says the woman said, I know that Messiah called
- 5:36Christ is coming. When he comes, he will explain
- 5:38everything to us. Then Jesus declared, I the one
- 5:42speaking to you, I am He. So he was letting the woman know
- 5:49about the living water that he was bringing.
- 5:53And then he, you know, Jesus was saying it.
- 5:56Whoever believes in me as the scriptures has had rivers of
- 5:59living water will flow from within them.
- 6:02In Revelation Chapter 7 verse 17 says for the lamb referring to
- 6:08Jesus at the center of the throne will be their shepherd.
- 6:11He will lead them to springs of living water and God will wipe
- 6:16away every tear from their eyes. So the living water in this
- 6:21fountain, this cleansing, the cleansing of us comes from God
- 6:26through the, through Jesus by the Holy Spirit.
- 6:30So it's, it is a, a process in our life.
- 6:33But this is talking about on that day that God is going to
- 6:36cleanse all the people. And it says, I, I will banish
- 6:41the names of the idols from the land and they will be remembered
- 6:45no more. That's going to be a good thing.
- 6:46So, and he's going to remove the prophets.
- 6:50These are the false prophets and the spirit of impurity from the
- 6:53land. So everything is going to be
- 6:57made new when Jesus returns, but there is going to be a process
- 7:03of going through the fire like it says in that it's almost like
- 7:05a a poem towards the end of it. So the part about the children
- 7:12that is, I just said, whoa, when I read that one, then their own
- 7:18parents will stab the one who prophesized.
- 7:21So I'm going to read the question and answer from the
- 7:24study Bible. I have nothing to say about that
- 7:26one. Why would parents execute their
- 7:28own children? This prophecy regarding the New
- 7:30Covenant implies that false prophecy will still be a problem
- 7:34in the future. Still, it is hard to imagine how
- 7:37concern for the truth will supersede even the most intimate
- 7:41human concerns. So yeah, I don't that's I, I
- 7:46just can't even imagine this. But there's a lot of things that
- 7:52are coming up and in this time of testing that are going to be
- 7:58like never before. Like Jesus said, there will be a
- 8:01time that of great tribulation that has never been before nor
- 8:06will ever be again. So this is going to be something
- 8:09that no one has ever seen before.
- 8:12The verse about strike the shepherd and the sheep will be
- 8:15scattered. This verse was later quoted by
- 8:18Jesus to describe what would happen to him and his disciples.
- 8:22And it gives us a reference which I didn't look up ahead of
- 8:24time, but I will now for Matthew chapter 26 and we'll go there.
- 8:32It's verse 31 that's referenced, so I'll read what it says there.
- 8:41So Matthew 26 verse 31 then Jesus told them, this very night
- 8:47you will all fall away on account of me.
- 8:51For it is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of
- 8:56the flock will be scattered. But after I have risen, I will
- 9:01go ahead of you into Galilee. Peter replied, Even if all fall
- 9:06away on account of you, I never will truly I tell you Jesus
- 9:11answered this very night before the rooster crows, you will
- 9:14disown me three times. But Peter declared, even if I
- 9:18have to die for you, I will never disown you and all the all
- 9:22the other disciples said the same.
- 9:24So this is you know if this happens to the disciples, then
- 9:29you can see why in Scripture it says pray that you will be able
- 9:32to stand on that day that your faith will be strong enough.
- 9:36Look at all the people that the 12 disciples or 11 disciples
- 9:40that were with him and we're good friends, dear friends to
- 9:43him that even they went through after seeing everything that
- 9:49Jesus did and knowing who he was, they denied him.
- 9:53And it just shows how weak us, how weak we can be.
- 9:57But then I also think about this like at this time the disciples
- 10:03did not have the Holy Spirit, but that's what was promised
- 10:08when Jesus left. He said it'll be good for you
- 10:11when I go away because I will send the Advocate and he will
- 10:15remain with you. I think all the way until he
- 10:18returns is what I can't remember.
- 10:20I'm paraphrasing that verse. But that's the good news that
- 10:23the Holy Spirit that Jesus sends to us when we are truly
- 10:28connected to God and we we desire to be a child of God and
- 10:33we want to get rid of the mess in our life and we believe in
- 10:37Jesus and about his death and his resurrection, then we
- 10:43receive the Holy Spirit. That's what Jesus said he will
- 10:46send when we are truly repentant and want to change.
- 10:49We don't come to Jesus perfect, but the Holy Spirit changes us
- 10:53in that process. And you know, as long as we our
- 10:57desire is that way. So in Mark chapter 14 verses 27
- 11:06through 31, it says you will all fall away.
- 11:10Jesus told them for it is written, I will strike the
- 11:12shepherd and the sheep will be scattered.
- 11:14But after I had risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.
- 11:17Peter declared even if all fall away, I will not truly I tell
- 11:21you Jesus answered today, yes, tonight before the rooster crows
- 11:24crows twice, you yourself will disown me three times.
- 11:29But Peter insisted emphatically, even if I have to die for you, I
- 11:32will never disown you and all the others said the same In Luke
- 11:39chapter 22. It doesn't talk about chapter
- 11:4622. It talks about the same scene,
- 11:47but it doesn't talk about the the shepherd being struck.
- 11:51But this is Luke's version of the gospel.
- 11:54It's it says verse or chapter 22, verses 31 through 34.
- 11:59Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.
- 12:07But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not
- 12:11fail, and when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.
- 12:17But he replied, Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to
- 12:21death. Jesus answered, I tell you
- 12:23Peter, before the rooster crows today you will deny 3 times that
- 12:28you know me. And then in John chapter 13
- 12:35verses 36 through 38, Simon Peter asked him, Lord, where are
- 12:39you going? Jesus replied, where I am going,
- 12:42you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.
- 12:46Peter asked, Lord why can't I follow you now?
- 12:49I will lay down my life for you. Then Jesus answered, will you
- 12:53really lay down your life for me?
- 12:55Very truly, I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will
- 12:58disown me 3 times. So all four Gospels talk about
- 13:04this and about how the sheep scattered after the shepherd was
- 13:08struck. Everybody went in fear, but
- 13:10again, they did not have the Holy Spirit at that time.
- 13:13So let's see what catastrophe was Zechariah describing.
- 13:20This may predict the Roman attack on Jerusalem in AD 70, or
- 13:24it may refer symbolically to the persecution of the Church.
- 13:28What is the day of the Lord? This refers and and when it says
- 13:32the persecution of the church. I was thinking that because
- 13:36there's 1/3 that'll be left. And I was thinking that's kind
- 13:39of the remnant cause like in the whole land declares the Lord,
- 13:422/3 will be struck down and perish, yet 1/3 will be will be
- 13:47left in it. There were a few other times
- 13:50where this was acted out like Ezekiel, where he would take a
- 13:56third and he would put it a third of the hairs and put it
- 13:59inside his coat. He would cloak.
- 14:01He would spare that when he was like re enacting to get a
- 14:04message to the people surrounding him.
- 14:08And this same thing like this is this is kind of, this third is
- 14:14repeated also like in the Book of Revelation.
- 14:19At first, when the trumpets happen, I think there's like 1/3
- 14:22of different things that are affected.
- 14:25And then when the the bulls happen, then the, the remaining
- 14:29part of it has happened. So God does things like in
- 14:32stages, he gives warnings and they keep getting harsher and
- 14:36harsher. But the whole point of that is
- 14:39to lead people to repentance. But some people will never go to
- 14:42repentance. So and God is aware of that.
- 14:45It's written in Scripture that many of the people, I guess
- 14:49during the the wrath of God, they could turn, but they don't.
- 14:54They just don't want to repent of what they're doing.
- 14:57And we find that in the world, You know, there are, there will
- 15:00be people who accept Christ and then people who reject him and
- 15:04resist him. And we can't do that for anyone
- 15:09else. It's everyone's own decision.
- 15:12So what is the day of the Lord? Well, I guess last recording we
- 15:18talked about that quite a bit, so I won't go through all of
- 15:20that, but if you want to listen to it, just listen to the last
- 15:23chapter 12. I guess it was.
- 15:27So this refers to a time when the Lord will be vindicated and
- 15:30His wrath will be unleashed against those opposed to Him.
- 15:34At the same time, His grace will be poured out on those who
- 15:38belong to Him. So the grace is really the power
- 15:41of the Holy Spirit. Why would God cause an attack on
- 15:46Jerusalem only to defend against it?
- 15:48Though God may use Pagan nations as instruments of His wrath,
- 15:52they are not exempt from judgment for their wickedness.
- 15:56So God brings the nations in judgment against Jerusalem, but
- 15:59also turns judgment back on the unrighteous nations.
- 16:04It's kind of an example of the way I always look at it is that
- 16:08God lets us have our free will like all these nations.
- 16:12They do want, they want to go against Israel.
- 16:15And in order to refine Israel like silver and test them like
- 16:21gold, God allows it to happen. But their free will and their
- 16:26desire to punish Israel will not be left undone.
- 16:30It's going to come back on them as well.
- 16:33So I think there's there's so much more that we should all
- 16:36think about, like what you reap, you will sow because it shows
- 16:40that pretty clearly in the Bible how things turn out.
- 16:44So I think that's the end of this chapter.
- 16:47And I'm going to keep this one a short one for today and hope you
- 16:52come back next time for chapter 14.
- 16:55If you found this beneficial, please share it with others.
- 16:57And if you haven't subscribed, please do so.
- 16:59Thank you.
