- 0:00Speaker 1: Eight forty four thirteen ten Wiba a little computers designed
- 0:04Speaker 1: to have a mind to their own. Doctor Greer, how
- 0:07Speaker 1: are you doing this morning? Did you ever run into
- 0:10Speaker 1: technical problems? I mean, technology is amazing, but oh my goodness.
- 0:15Speaker 2: What yes, when it happens, man, it really does take
- 0:18Speaker 2: you for a run.
- 0:19Speaker 1: It sure does. We've got speaking of technology. I was,
- 0:23Speaker 1: I was talking and I don't know that this part
- 0:25Speaker 1: went over the air, so I'm I'm gonna maybe repeat myself.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I apologize if not. It's important stuff for folks. Mentioned
- 0:31Speaker 1: the website checkout vet dot com. And I was talking
- 0:34Speaker 1: doctor with you about some commercials I had seen recently,
- 0:38Speaker 1: one with like Martha Stewart Stewart and others, and there
- 0:40Speaker 1: was like this this kitty litter that changed colors or
- 0:43Speaker 1: something could could help you with the pat health. I thought, oh,
- 0:45Speaker 1: that's that's interesting. And then I was at the at
- 0:48Speaker 1: the store and I saw there's a bunch of different
- 0:50Speaker 1: litters like that. Are those things valuable? Is that valuable information?
- 0:55Speaker 1: Is it a gimmick a little of both or what's
- 0:57Speaker 1: kind of the professional look at those type of things.
- 1:01Speaker 2: No, there's definitely value in it. It can tell you
- 1:03Speaker 2: what the glucose levels are stuff you have a diabetic
- 1:06Speaker 2: cat or you suspect a diabetic cat. It can tell
- 1:10Speaker 2: you what the pH is, it can check for blood.
- 1:12Speaker 2: There's definitely things that we can check in the litter
- 1:15Speaker 2: and it's pretty valuable. There's also a non absorbent kind
- 1:18Speaker 2: of cat litters, so if there are more extensive tests
- 1:20Speaker 2: that your veterinary needs to run, you can ask them
- 1:24Speaker 2: for the non absorbent type. It's like a little plastic bead.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Your catcoes and the litter box urinates and then we
- 1:30Speaker 2: can pick up the urine without it being absorbed into
- 1:33Speaker 2: the litter and do some additional testing as the veterinary clinic.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Now our preferred way to collect a urine sample is
- 1:39Speaker 2: directly from the bladder with ultrasound guided needles, so we
- 1:43Speaker 2: can get a sterile sample directly out of the bladder.
- 1:45Speaker 2: But that isn't always feasible. A lot of cats won't
- 1:49Speaker 2: tolerate going to the veterinarian will or the way they're
- 1:51Speaker 2: the urinate in the carrier. You know, a lot of
- 1:53Speaker 2: different things can happen, so sometimes that's not an option,
- 1:58Speaker 2: and so collecting urine home is a great idea Now
- 2:02Speaker 2: we do see a lot of older cats becoming diabetics,
- 2:05Speaker 2: so it's an important test for us to evaluate, especially
- 2:08Speaker 2: if the cats water consumption has increased. It can be
- 2:12Speaker 2: from diver disease, it can be from diabetes, it can
- 2:15Speaker 2: be from bladder problems. So there's a variety of different things.
- 2:19Speaker 2: So just saying that my cats urinating more than usual
- 2:23Speaker 2: isn't a diagnoster with that too.
- 2:26Speaker 1: It's that's it's it's it's great to hear that. It's
- 2:28Speaker 1: a it's an interesting, a useful tool. And with cat
- 2:32Speaker 1: litter in general, I know my cats, we use a
- 2:35Speaker 1: particular brand, and I wouldn't even try to change it
- 2:39Speaker 1: just because you know, they're they're a little you know,
- 2:42Speaker 1: they're one of the six six six years. Yeah, is there,
- 2:46Speaker 1: And I don't I don't want to risk them not
- 2:48Speaker 1: liking change because I know what the consequence is contended
- 2:50Speaker 1: to me. Are are all obviously some great features with
- 2:54Speaker 1: some of these these smarter kitty litters. Aside from that,
- 2:57Speaker 1: are like all litters made equal or are there are
- 3:00Speaker 1: there some that are better for pets for cats?
- 3:04Speaker 2: Absolutely? And I don't think we adequately understand or address that.
- 3:09Speaker 2: So I usually have a couple of rules. When we're
- 3:11Speaker 2: using litter boxes. You never want to change the litter
- 3:14Speaker 2: without giving the cat two options. So you the rule
- 3:17Speaker 2: of some is one litter box per cat plus us there.
- 3:19Speaker 2: So if you have three cats, you need four litter boxes.
- 3:22Speaker 2: If you have twelve cats, you need thirteen litter boxes.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Do you want to have one litter box per cat
- 3:27Speaker 2: plus an additional one in case something happens? And then.
- 3:32Speaker 3: I think the technical problems continue.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Okay, let's get We'll get the doctor reconnected here in
- 3:39Speaker 1: just a moment.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Last week I had a couple of oh.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Sorry about that, doctor, you cut out your cut out
- 3:43Speaker 1: there briefly what.
- 3:44Speaker 2: We said becoming.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Oh goodness, Yeah, doctor is traveling this morning. We'll we'll

- 4:14Speaker 1: great things about what puppy doesn't love riding in cars.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I was a silliest comment on my part, but you
- 4:19Speaker 1: obviously have some pets that don't like getting in into

- 5:19Speaker 1: other things there are costs associated with that. Another cool
- 5:22Speaker 1: thing about the website checkout vet dot com and of
- 5:24Speaker 1: course working with the folks at checkout Veterinary is that
- 5:26Speaker 1: transparent pricing. They give you a give you a pretty
- 5:28Speaker 1: good idea of what things are cast are going to costs.
- 5:32Speaker 1: As we talked this week with doctor Greer talking about
- 5:35Speaker 1: some of the environmental things around your pets, and we're
- 5:37Speaker 1: talking a little bit about kitty litter and who knew
- 5:41Speaker 1: we'd spend spend a half hour talking about kitty litter,
- 5:44Speaker 1: but doctor, it is important and we were left off
- 5:47Speaker 1: there just talking about the different types of litter, and
- 5:50Speaker 1: then you were also talking about the importance of having
- 5:52Speaker 1: a variety of different more than one litter box for
- 5:56Speaker 1: the cats. Right going to be one of those and
- 6:01Speaker 1: he's going to be one of those days.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Looks like it looks like the call drop yet again.
- 6:06Speaker 1: We'll try and yeah, we'll try and get doctor Greer
- 6:10Speaker 1: reconnected here and get it. Maybe a better signal on
- 6:13Speaker 1: that is is when the doctor is mentioning, of course
- 6:16Speaker 1: having options for especially you know, your kiddies, and having
- 6:21Speaker 1: a box for each cat, plus an extra one just
- 6:23Speaker 1: in case something happens, and having over the years had
- 6:27Speaker 1: had a number of cats that can be very picky
- 6:29Speaker 1: about litter boxes. It's certainly something you want to you understand.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I also want to talk with the doc as well
- 6:35Speaker 1: about about some of the other things around the house.
- 6:37Speaker 1: We've talked in the past about about foods that are
- 6:40Speaker 1: good for your pet, also foods that can pose a danger.
- 6:42Speaker 1: There's also some treats and toys and other things that
- 6:45Speaker 1: are better for your pets something you may want to avoid.
- 6:48Speaker 1: We're going to get some guidance from the doctor on
- 6:50Speaker 1: that as well as ask the experts. Continues with Checkout Veterinarian.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Doctor Marty Greer talked about the website checkout vet dot
- 6:57Speaker 1: com to learn more their location. Of course, the area
- 6:59Speaker 1: a little right at twenty seven to ten Prairie Lakes
- 7:03Speaker 1: Drive in some Prairie is right off the right off
- 7:05Speaker 1: one fifty one. They're super convenient to get in to
- 7:08Speaker 1: see that vets at checkout veterinary. It's a great day
- 7:10Speaker 1: to start that relationship again. You can learn more online
- 7:13Speaker 1: check out vet dot com. That's checkout vet dot com.
- 7:16Speaker 1: They're tell for one number six o eight three one
- 7:18Speaker 1: eight sixty seven hundred. That's three one eight sixty seven hundred.
- 7:22Speaker 1: One of the things too, we're going to start doing
- 7:24Speaker 1: here on upcoming shows is we'll start taking calls and
- 7:27Speaker 1: questions with the doctor as well. So if you've got
- 7:29Speaker 1: pet related questions, if it's obviously something serious, you want
- 7:32Speaker 1: to contact your vet. But if you've got something curiosity
- 7:35Speaker 1: maybe about a pet, you can always email me right
- 7:37Speaker 1: now Sean at WIBA dot com. Also in the future,
- 7:40Speaker 1: we're going to be taking calls and questions live on
- 7:42Speaker 1: the air with doctor Greer and doctor Greer. Maybe maybe
- 7:45Speaker 1: our the cell provider doesn't like us talk to you
- 7:47Speaker 1: about Kitty Lyric. It really doesn't.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I don't know. It's gonna get that feeling.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Yeah, So you were saying about about the importance of
- 7:56Speaker 1: having not just one box for each cap, but an
- 7:58Speaker 1: extra box as well, right.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Right, and never change without giving the option of the
- 8:04Speaker 2: old litter and the new litter. There are litters with
- 8:06Speaker 2: fragrance and some cats don't like the fragrances we do,
- 8:09Speaker 2: but they don't. There are different textures of litters, so
- 8:12Speaker 2: you want to make sure that you're using a litter
- 8:14Speaker 2: that they like. The scupable litters have become very popular
- 8:17Speaker 2: and the cats really like them, so to the people.
- 8:19Speaker 2: But you can buy litters out of corn cobs and
- 8:22Speaker 2: newspaper and soy and all kinds of different substrates that
- 8:25Speaker 2: are more ecologically friendly, So you want to make sure
- 8:28Speaker 2: that you're doing something like and your cat likes. Your
- 8:31Speaker 2: cat doesn't necessarily worry about the planet as much as
- 8:34Speaker 2: you do, so you might want to, you know, to
- 8:37Speaker 2: give the cat multiple, multiple options. But if the cat
- 8:40Speaker 2: stops using the litter box, you need to get a
- 8:42Speaker 2: veterinary appointment, because that's telling you something's wrong with the cat.
- 8:46Speaker 2: It could be their bladder, it could be that they
- 8:48Speaker 2: have kidney failure. There could be a multitude of different things.
- 8:51Speaker 2: So we never assume that it's just the cat missed,
- 8:53Speaker 2: because cats don't miss cats when they use the litter box,
- 8:56Speaker 2: they very carefully scoop a little hole, line it up
- 9:00Speaker 2: for it never missed. So if the litter box isn't
- 9:03Speaker 2: being used, there's something wrong. Either the box isn't good,
- 9:07Speaker 2: the litter isn't good, or the cat's got something wrong.
- 9:10Speaker 2: A lot of people want to put a lot of
- 9:11Speaker 2: cat litter into the box and then they don't have
- 9:13Speaker 2: to change his offen like one and a half inches deep.
- 9:17Speaker 2: If it's too deep, they sink into it. They don't
- 9:19Speaker 2: like that. So cats are telling us saying if they're
- 9:22Speaker 2: not using the litter box reliably, you need to listen
- 9:25Speaker 2: to them. They're telling you something. They're sending you smoke
- 9:27Speaker 2: signals that say, hey, fix this because I got a problem.
- 9:32Speaker 1: That's It's interesting when you mentioned the amount of litter,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and I think at one point or another we've all
- 9:36Speaker 1: maybe been a little guilty of that saying, you know
- 9:38Speaker 1: what if I add a little extra and I as
- 9:40Speaker 1: as I'm doing this, I won't have to do it all.
- 9:43Speaker 1: But really important to understand, of course, this is this
- 9:46Speaker 1: you're doing this for your kiddy cat and making sure
- 9:48Speaker 1: that they're that they're comfortable. And some goods like what
- 9:50Speaker 1: about those automatic cat boxes? Are those? I see stories
- 9:55Speaker 1: online and take it for whatever it is. And people
- 9:59Speaker 1: warn about experience and says and other things. Do we know,
- 10:01Speaker 1: do we have any type of research about about like
- 10:03Speaker 1: automatic cat boxes beneficial not necessarily beneficial, kind of a
- 10:08Speaker 1: mix bag. Do we know anything on that front, doctor.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Yeah, there are some cats that really use them very well.
- 10:15Speaker 2: But again you need to make sure that you've given
- 10:17Speaker 2: the cat another option. So don't just take away the
- 10:19Speaker 2: old litter box. Put in the new one. Because the
- 10:22Speaker 2: cat that doesn't like the litter box are one of
- 10:24Speaker 2: the cats the litter box, you're going to have some problems,
- 10:27Speaker 2: so be careful. Most of them have a sensor on
- 10:29Speaker 2: them so that if a cat goes in and then
- 10:31Speaker 2: that one comes out and the next one goes in,
- 10:33Speaker 2: it usually will have a delay on it so that
- 10:36Speaker 2: the cat doesn't get caught up in the scooping mechanism,
- 10:38Speaker 2: because that would be very unfortunate for the cat to
- 10:41Speaker 2: have a negative experience doing that, So again, be really careful.
- 10:44Speaker 2: And then people are like, well, what about dogs. Well,
- 10:47Speaker 2: Brilliant Pad is a company that has recently started making
- 10:51Speaker 2: a flat sheet of paper and you could use it
- 10:54Speaker 2: for your cat, but it's mostly designed for dogs that
- 10:57Speaker 2: rolls up, so it's a big roll of paper. The
- 11:00Speaker 2: dog goes onto it. Urinate stuffecates, has whatever, they do
- 11:03Speaker 2: it rolls it up into a tight little ball, and
- 11:07Speaker 2: then at the end of like two hundred feet you
- 11:10Speaker 2: change the role. So if you have a dog that
- 11:12Speaker 2: needs to use indoor facilities, like you work all day,
- 11:16Speaker 2: or the dog is smaller, the dog is stick or
- 11:17Speaker 2: it's a puppy or whatever, it's a great system for
- 11:20Speaker 2: those kinds of situations. It's not going to work for
- 11:23Speaker 2: a labrador, you know, a full size adult labrador, but
- 11:25Speaker 2: it will work for the smaller breeds. So it's something
- 11:29Speaker 2: else that's new on the market.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So it's kind of like kind of like puppy pads
- 11:35Speaker 1: for new kind of like puppy pads for grown dogs.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Doug Right Doctors were as we're talking course this morning
- 11:46Speaker 1: with doctor Market Marty Greer of Checkout Veterinary, the website
- 11:49Speaker 1: checkout vet dot com. That's checkout vet dot com. We're
- 11:53Speaker 1: talking to obviously about about cats and the importance of
- 11:57Speaker 1: the right litter litter box, having them available where they
- 12:00Speaker 1: need them, how they need them, and kind of set right.
- 12:02Speaker 1: The other thing too, we don't always think about with
- 12:04Speaker 1: cats as recreation is. I think for a lot of us,
- 12:07Speaker 1: we've got a dog, I've got a Chihuahua. He's not
- 12:09Speaker 1: the biggest walker. He's not going to go for a
- 12:11Speaker 1: run or anything. But still every day we take him
- 12:13Speaker 1: out a couple of times, get him out for a
- 12:15Speaker 1: walk and some exercise. Cats are are are superactive animals.
- 12:20Speaker 1: They need some type of physical engagement. Do things like
- 12:24Speaker 1: cat trees and are there are there certain toys that
- 12:26Speaker 1: are really good for keeping it cat physically and mentally
- 12:29Speaker 1: engaged when they're in the house.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I love you asked that. So, yes, cat trees
- 12:35Speaker 2: are wonderful, but they need to be really sturdy and
- 12:38Speaker 2: high enough that if the cat gets on them that
- 12:40Speaker 2: they're not going to tip over. If the cat runs
- 12:42Speaker 2: across the room and leaps under the tree, it's not
- 12:44Speaker 2: going to fall. If they want to use it for
- 12:46Speaker 2: a scratching post, they need to be able to stand
- 12:48Speaker 2: at their full heights with their legs their front legs
- 12:50Speaker 2: fully extended and their back legs fully extended. So it
- 12:53Speaker 2: needs to be fairly tall. The bigger the cat, the
- 12:56Speaker 2: taller the tree. So those are really great things. I've
- 12:58Speaker 2: seen lots of houses where they've put walkways around the
- 13:01Speaker 2: top of the room so the cats can you know,
- 13:04Speaker 2: walk through the whole room without ever touching the floor,
- 13:06Speaker 2: which is great if they have a dog that doesn't
- 13:08Speaker 2: get along with the cat. And then there's really cool
- 13:11Speaker 2: feeder toys. They're made by Doc and Phoebe's, so it's
- 13:14Speaker 2: dooc Doc and Phoebees developed by a veterinary and there
- 13:19Speaker 2: are a combination of a feeding device that measure. You
- 13:22Speaker 2: measure the amount of food that goes into it, and
- 13:24Speaker 2: then you put it into this little device and then
- 13:26Speaker 2: you hide them around the house, so you can put
- 13:28Speaker 2: them in your shoe and in the closet, and in
- 13:30Speaker 2: the bathroom and in you know, the laundry room. Do
- 13:32Speaker 2: you move them around the house and this way the
- 13:34Speaker 2: cat gets off the couch and doesn't just walk to
- 13:37Speaker 2: the litter box, walk to the food dish, and walk
- 13:39Speaker 2: back to the couch and sleep for the rest of
- 13:41Speaker 2: the day. But they go searching through the house and
- 13:43Speaker 2: you move them around so that every day they're in
- 13:45Speaker 2: a different place. Do you've measured the amount of food?
- 13:48Speaker 2: They get some activity, They get that hunting behavior that
- 13:50Speaker 2: cats were really evolved to have. And so instead of
- 13:54Speaker 2: like hunting for the food bulll in the kitchen isn't
- 13:56Speaker 2: really inspiring for cats. So this gives a new lease online,
- 14:02Speaker 2: something to do, something to look forward to, especially if
- 14:05Speaker 2: you have kittens that are overly active and you're trying
- 14:07Speaker 2: to do something to keep them busy. Those are great.
- 14:10Speaker 2: There's also a toy called Cat Dancer that's actually made
- 14:13Speaker 2: in Appleton, Wisconsin, which is kind of cool. It's a
- 14:16Speaker 2: little wire with some anny items on it. So again
- 14:20Speaker 2: we can support our Wisconsin people. There's a couple of
- 14:23Speaker 2: cat litter companies. Pioneer Pet makes their litter here in Wisconsin.
- 14:27Speaker 2: So we've got some good Wisconsin companies that we can
- 14:29Speaker 2: support and still get good activities for our cat and doctor.
- 14:33Speaker 1: You mentioned things like like the cat Dance Dancer, and
- 14:35Speaker 1: I've I've seen those and I think we've had one
- 14:39Speaker 1: in the past. Is one of the cool thing too
- 14:40Speaker 1: with those is is it's it's not just good for
- 14:43Speaker 1: the cat, you're involved too. And I think sometimes, you know,
- 14:47Speaker 1: we forget about the importance of you know, because cats
- 14:50Speaker 1: are cats are cats, and you know they'll come and
- 14:52Speaker 1: cuddle with the end, be your best bud, but we
- 14:54Speaker 1: forget that they like, they like being part of our
- 14:56Speaker 1: lives and like playing games with us as well, and
- 14:58Speaker 1: having that that interact of element and having that that
- 15:01Speaker 1: connection there is really important for their well being and
- 15:04Speaker 1: yours as well, isn't it right.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I Mean people assume that cats are just aloof and
- 15:08Speaker 2: they don't really want to interact, and that's really not accurate.
- 15:11Speaker 2: So there are some cats that are like that, and
- 15:13Speaker 2: as they become older sometimes that does change. But those
- 15:16Speaker 2: are really important things that you have that interaction. And
- 15:19Speaker 2: those like fishing pole kind of toys, they're really fun.
- 15:22Speaker 2: They're fun for the kids, fun for the cats, and
- 15:26Speaker 2: they're I can't overly and you know, your hair and ever,
- 15:34Speaker 2: so those long sticks can really be helpful with the
- 15:36Speaker 2: feathers and the you know. Oh and yeah, there's lots.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Oh, I think we're breaking up again there, doctor, And
- 15:53Speaker 1: you mentioned things like like some of the other toys
- 15:55Speaker 1: out there as well, and I know I've done this,
