- 0:01Hey. Everybody, welcome to the Good
- 0:03Morning from the Chicken Coop podcast.
- 0:05My name is Kim Johnson and I am a mastermindset, coach, creative
- 0:08strategist, and also happen to be a farmer.
- 0:11This is my Chicken coop and I come out here.
- 0:13Every day to record a podcast to.
- 0:15Teach distinctions, possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking, and just bring some. Joy.
- 0:20Into the. World.
- 0:21So welcome to the coop and let's start your day off in a
- 0:24fantastic way. Hey, everybody.
- 0:28Good morning. This is Part 2 because I am in
- 0:32the garage still and a little bit more of our saga from
- 0:36yesterday that I did not mention in the first one.
- 0:39This was a big thing yesterday. The Hawks were out in full
- 0:43force. They were.
- 0:44We did not know that they were going to show up the way they
- 0:47showed up yesterday. Let the girls out in the morning
- 0:49like normal and thinking, OK, everything's going to be great.
- 0:53But clearly the Hawks knew we were going to have a hell of a
- 0:56like, you know, cold spell and they were going to be in full
- 0:59force hunting. Not to mention we believe we had
- 1:01a have a breeding pair near us right now because they are all
- 1:05over the place and they are like hunkered down in hunting.
- 1:10So yesterday we know for a fact that two of our chickens got
- 1:14hit. One Mark saw right by the
- 1:17garage. She was walking like she does
- 1:19all the time around the house, between the house and the
- 1:22garage. And Mark saw her, the hawk fly
- 1:25down and hit her and he pushed her up against the wall between
- 1:29the the garage and the door to get in the garage.
- 1:34And fortunately, he was standing in the garage because he was
- 1:39coming out of his reptile room and taking care of the snakes
- 1:42and saw what was going on. And it was unbelievable how how
- 1:48hard the hit was. There's feathers everywhere.
- 1:50And she, he saved her. Now she is currently in a cat
- 1:55crate in the garage because last night she was refusing to go in
- 2:00the coop. She was standing.
- 2:02She looked terrible. She looked like she had been
- 2:05hit. She looked like she had trauma.
- 2:08So I was not gonna put her out, you know, I, I was not gonna
- 2:10expect her to stay in the coop anyway.
- 2:13However, you can probably hear off in the background talking to
- 2:15me. But she, when we went to put all
- 2:18the chickens away, she was standing like under the coop,
- 2:22but she wasn't going in the coop.
- 2:24And so I said to him, Oh my gosh, maybe she has something
- 2:28more wrong with her. So we brought her inside and she
- 2:30spent the night inside of our cat crate that we use for
- 2:33chickens when they're injured. And this morning she's standing
- 2:37up and she's babbling. So we'll see how she does.
- 2:39I'm not going to put her out there until he checks her over,
- 2:42but we're going to check it, check it out and see how she is.
- 2:45The other one, amazingly, did not.
- 2:48I don't know how she got away. I don't know if it was the
- 2:50rooster that saved her. I don't know if she just got
- 2:52away, but there were feathers everywhere and you could see
- 2:56that it was a direct hit because it was chunks of feathers.
- 2:58However, they were the bright orange ones and like kind of a
- 3:03salmon color and she they were all three of them were there
- 3:07last night that have that. So by the blessings of the
- 3:11universe and God, she did not get killed and it seems to be
- 3:15completely fine went up with all the other girls.
- 3:17And this this time of year is always tricky because we know
- 3:20the Hawks can show up. We know we have eagles that show
- 3:23up. We certainly have owls that are
- 3:26here and everyone always asks me, why do you let them out?
- 3:30Because it's such a hard thing now.
- 3:33And I am adamant about this. While it is absolutely
- 3:38excruciatingly painful for me to lose a chicken, I don't want
- 3:43them to live all cooped up nothing.
- 3:45Can you imagine being brought into this world and being told
- 3:49that you can only stay in so many square feet for your whole
- 3:52life? I, I can't imagine that that is
- 3:55not a quality life. So I have made the decision, as
- 3:59hard as it is for me to lose them, I want them to have a
- 4:02quality of life. So I let them go out, I let them
- 4:06walk, I let them free range. They have the whole farm to go
- 4:09all over and they, they are capable most of the time, 90% of
- 4:15the time they are capable of hiding.
- 4:17We have hiding spots for them. We have tunnels, we have things,
- 4:21bushes that we've purposely put in that birds can't get into
- 4:24that have thorns. They can get in there.
- 4:27I mean, it is a planned escape most of the time.
- 4:33And then there are the times when the Hawks just come and you
- 4:36can't see them. That's why we deal with the feed
- 4:38the crows and go through all of that.
- 4:40But the real reason that I'm telling everybody this is
- 4:42because I would never want to live a sheltered life like that.
- 4:46Imagine if you were born and your parents just said, oh,
- 4:49you're never leaving the house because there's too many risks
- 4:51out there. Or you can never go away to
- 4:54college because there's too many risks or you can't drive a car
- 4:57because there's too many risks. It would be a horrible
- 5:00existence. And just like when we have
- 5:03elderly parents that get to a certain point and it's our
- 5:07decision to say, well, do we put them, you know, in a nursing
- 5:11home? Do we actually talk to the
- 5:12doctors about end of life practice and all of that?
- 5:16It's a hard decision, but quality of life matters.
- 5:19The quality of our life matters. I wouldn't want that.
- 5:23So I let my girls free range and that's why they're out there.
- 5:26So hopefully we're going to be able to address the hawk
- 5:29situation. And I'm thinking about getting
- 5:32one of those scary waving guys that waves in the air and like a
- 5:35balloon. But we're working on it.
- 5:37So send us prayers and blessings.
- 5:39We'll get through the season. And the great news is we didn't
- 5:44lose anybody yesterday. I hope you guys have a blessed
- 5:46day and I will see you tomorrow. Bye.
