- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo! I'm Lucas, and here with me is the wonderful Luna. Luna: Hey everyone! I'm so excited for today's episode. What are we learning, Lucas? Lucas: Today we're going to focus on something really simple but so important: how to say thank you in Dutch. Luna: Oh, I love that. We've learned a lot of phrases for buying things, but I don't think we've really practiced thank you properly. Lucas: Exactly. And there are a few different ways to say it, depending on who you're talking to. Let's start with the most common one: 'dank je wel'. Luna: Dank je wel. That sounds friendly. Lucas: It is! You use 'dank je wel' with friends, family, people your own age. It's informal. Say it with me: 'dank je wel'. Luna: Dank je wel. Lucas: Perfect. Now, if you're talking to someone older, or a stranger, or in a formal setting, you say 'dank u wel'. Luna: Dank u wel. So the 'u' makes it formal, right? Lucas: Right. 'U' is the formal 'you'. So if a shop assistant helps you, you say 'dank u wel'. Luna: Dank u wel. Okay, I think I've got that. Lucas: Good. There's also a shorter version, just 'bedankt'. That's like 'thanks' in English. It's informal but very common. Luna: Bedankt. That's easy to remember. Lucas: And if you want to say 'thanks a lot', you can say 'heel erg bedankt'. 'Heel erg' means 'very much'. Luna: Heel erg bedankt. That's a mouthful but I like it. Lucas: Let's practice a little scene. Imagine you're at the bakery and you just bought a loaf of bread. The baker hands it to you. What do you say? Luna: Dank u wel? Because it's a baker, a stranger. Lucas: Exactly. 'Dank u wel'. Or you could say 'bedankt' if it's a small bakery and you're on friendly terms. But 'dank u wel' is always safe. Now, what if a friend gives you a gift? Luna: Dank je wel! Or bedankt! Maybe 'heel erg bedankt' if it's a really nice gift. Lucas: Perfect. You're getting the hang of it. Let's do a quick drill. I'll say a situation, and you say the right thank you. Ready? Luna: Ready! Lucas: Your teacher helps you with a difficult exercise. Luna: Dank u wel. Lucas: Your little brother passes you the salt. Luna: Dank je wel. Lucas: A stranger holds the door for you. Luna: Dank u wel. Lucas: Great job! You're a natural. Luna: Thanks, Lucas! Oh wait, I mean, dank je wel. Lucas: See, you're already using it. Now, let's put it all together in a short dialogue. I'll be the shopkeeper, you be the customer. I say: 'Hier is uw brood.' What do you say? Luna: Dank u wel. Lucas: And then I say: 'Graag gedaan.' That means 'you're welcome'. So the full exchange: 'Hier is uw brood.' 'Dank u wel.' 'Graag gedaan.' Luna: Oh, I like 'graag gedaan'. Can we learn that too? Lucas: We'll save 'graag gedaan' for another episode. Today we're focusing on thank you. But it's good to hear it in context. Luna: Fair enough. So let me practice the four phrases again: dank je wel, dank u wel, bedankt, heel erg bedankt. Lucas: Perfect. And listeners, repeat after Luna: 'dank je wel', 'dank u wel', 'bedankt', 'heel erg bedankt'. These will make you sound polite and natural. Luna: You know, Lucas, I think these phrases are really useful. And if people find this episode helpful, maybe they'd want to support the show. Lucas: That's a good point. Luna: Yeah, and we really appreciate it. But no pressure. Let's get back to practicing. So, if I want to thank someone for a compliment, what do I say? Lucas: You can say 'dank je wel' or 'bedankt'. For example, if someone says 'Je ziet er mooi uit' — you look nice — you say 'dank je wel'. Luna: Dank je wel. That's sweet. Can we do one more scenario? Lucas: Of course. Imagine you're at a restaurant and the waiter brings your food. What do you say? Luna: Dank u wel. Lucas: Exactly. And if you're with friends and someone passes you the ketchup? Luna: Dank je wel. Lucas: You've got it. Today we learned four ways to say thank you: 'dank je wel', 'dank u wel', 'bedankt', and 'heel erg bedankt'. Practice them this week. Say them every time you get a chance. Luna: I will! Dank je wel, Lucas, for this great lesson. Lucas: Graag gedaan, Luna. And thank you, listeners, for joining us. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Dutch with Fexingo. Luna: Doei!
