Transcript
- 0:00Hey everyone, welcome to the podcast.
- 0:02Well, we finally decided it was time for us to play Maj. for
- 0:05money and learn how to score. So today we review the scoring
- 0:09rules with you and share how it went for us.
- 0:11Not surprisingly, we have mixed reviews.
- 0:14Also, we share some Mother's Day Maj. gifts we received and we
- 0:17talk about a controversial gameplay choice some folks make
- 0:20called slamming. Have you heard of it?
- 0:23Here we go. We're four sisters game hope.
- 0:30We all love it and we hope you feel the same.
- 0:33So come on in and listen to our podcast because everyone is
- 0:38welcome. In the little.
- 0:39House of Mars. Hello everybody, and welcome to
- 0:42the Little House of Maj. podcast.
- 0:44I'm Lisa. I'm Tina.
- 0:45I'm Amy. And I'm Teresa.
- 0:47And we're good to be here and we are so glad to be back for
- 0:50another fun episode. So let's this week what what
- 0:53happened guys before we kind of launch into our topics today.
- 0:58Well, I. Wanted to say Happy Mother's
- 1:00Day. It we.
- 1:01Had a lovely it was it was recently.
- 1:04We're all mothers. We're all moms.
- 1:06We. Are all moms?
- 1:07So what did everybody do? Well, I had I had a lovely
- 1:12Mother's Day. My husband, who's fabulous,
- 1:15presented me with a mahjong cake.
- 1:17And I was there on this side, I. Was there?
- 1:20So what? What was it like?
- 1:21So it was really cute and it was so thoughtful.
- 1:24He actually picked up a ice cream cake from the grocery
- 1:27store. But on top there was like this
- 1:31picture of it was like what a mahjong table?
- 1:34It was like a host, you know, like there's like waffers that
- 1:37have. And it said, it said Happy
- 1:39Mother's Day, but it was, it was like the mahjong table.
- 1:42It had the mahjong. But I mean, he, he ordered it
- 1:45from Etsy, which I will say this really took forethought and he
- 1:50planned ahead. It was really super thoughtful.
- 1:52So it was cool because he just kind of got the cake.
- 1:54And then and then he put it on just.
- 1:56Laid it on. Printed edible wafer.
- 1:58Yeah, like if you had a print edible printer.
- 2:01I see what? You say, I will say this, it
- 2:02wasn't the most delicious thing on top, but it was the.
- 2:06Cutest. That's adorable.
- 2:07Yeah, so we kind of peeled it off before we ate it, but it was
- 2:10so. Sweet and thoughtful.
- 2:11What was the tapping? 3D or was it flat?
- 2:14No, it was flat. It was, it was, it was like a
- 2:16picture it. Was like a.
- 2:17Picture like someone clearly used, you know?
- 2:19Sometimes people print literally their face on a photograph and
- 2:23they put it on a. Cage Yeah, when I saw the image
- 2:26I thought it was 3D. It was.
- 2:28A good. It looked 3D.
- 2:29It was not 3D, it was not 3D, but it was really cute and I
- 2:33forced the man to play mahjong with me under duress.
- 2:35He knows how to play mahjong. He doesn't love it like we do,
- 2:39but he. Was very lovingly.
- 2:41He was so mahjong. And I'm going to give him a
- 2:43shout out. He got his very first mahjong
- 2:45ever on Mother's Day and I thought that might have hooked
- 2:49him in. I want to play more but.
- 2:50That I think he decided to go out on top.
- 2:52Yeah, yeah. Yeah, he's, I think he decided
- 2:54to go on top. He wasn't done, baby.
- 2:56He kind of anyway, so thanks babe.
- 2:59You're sweet. That's. 80 What about you?
- 3:01Good for you. I actually before Mother's Day,
- 3:03I was like, this is I was also going to have force play with my
- 3:06family. I love force play, yes.
- 3:10And they can't say. They cannot say no on Mother's
- 3:12Day. But I was gifted these very cute
- 3:16mahjong cheese spreaders that were a pair and that had like
- 3:20tiles as the handles super cute as well as kitchen towels so
- 3:25they will be I kind. Of feel like our families know
- 3:28going forward. Any cute little mahjong?
- 3:30Anything. Well, Lord knows there's enough
- 3:32swag out there to give so well I.
- 3:35I did absolutely 0 mahjong related things on Mother's Day.
- 3:39I had a celebrity, Teresa. I know.
- 3:42What did you do? Did you have delicious snacks we
- 3:44had? A delicious lunch.
- 3:46We went down to the Little Italy area of town Nice.
- 3:50We walked around it was beautiful day.
- 3:53Had a delicious lunch. And no thoughts of mahjong.
- 3:57No, I'm. I'm.
- 3:58Sad. I feel sad for.
- 3:59You, but it was a great day. Yeah, I got to spend my Mother's
- 4:02Day. With you I know that I mean
- 4:04bonus I mean. What a treat for you, treat
- 4:07Tina. What a treat.
- 4:08It was a treat for both of us. So one of the things that we
- 4:11wanted to talk about today that hopefully, you know, that was
- 4:14very new to us. We'd never done this is scoring.
- 4:18So #1 we're very curious. Listeners.
- 4:22Do you score? And we're gonna kind of talk
- 4:24about 'cause I think most people, correct me if I'm wrong,
- 4:27don't score that I, that we know of.
- 4:29And we didn't know what the heck we were doing.
- 4:31So Tina, our rules gave us gave us the the rules, and then we
- 4:37literally just finished playing. We just put.
- 4:39The. First time we all.
- 4:41Brought a satchel. Oh, a coin we.
- 4:43Brought a little satchel of coins.
- 4:45There it is. Tina's really excited.
- 4:47Really. Excited.
- 4:47It's a really. Cute satchel.
- 4:49We should post a picture of my satchel.
- 4:52Oh, that's a good. It just seems so old time.
- 4:54That's quality visuals. So anyway, Tina, take it away.
- 4:57OK, first of all, explain to us. OK, so like she said, we've
- 5:04never scored before. No one I've ever played with
- 5:06actually scores, but we decided to play for money today.
- 5:11So basically here's how it works.
- 5:14The numbers for each hand is the amount of money that the hand is
- 5:19worth. So on the right of the card it
- 5:21has. X points #2530.
- 5:24The harder the hand, the more points it is, right?
- 5:27So after someone wins, other players have to pay them based
- 5:32on that amount. And there's rules, of course,
- 5:34because it's mahjong and you know, there's.
- 5:36Always plenty of ridiculous, so let's just go. 1 by 1.
- 5:39One by one. OK so the first rule about
- 5:43paying is if you get a mahjong by picking your own tile.
- 5:48Like if you pick from the wall and you get mahjong, that's
- 5:51called considered a self pick. If you pick your own tile,
- 5:56everybody else has to pay you double the amount.
- 5:59So if it's a 25 5 cent hand, everyone has to pay you $0.50.
- 6:02Does that make sense? Yes, yes.
- 6:04And I think it's interesting because that one is just luck.
- 6:08It's totally. Because there's other ones that
- 6:09involve strategy which we would get into, but that one is
- 6:12purely. Luck.
- 6:13So if you pick your own tile, everyone just pays you double.
- 6:16Now if you pick a tile for off the wall for a joker exchange
- 6:22and then you use that joker to get mahjong, that's still
- 6:25considered a self pick. So again, walk us through that
- 6:28one again. OK, so if you're picking from
- 6:30the wall and you pick a tile that you can use to get a joker,
- 6:35and then that joker is what enables us to get you a mahjong,
- 6:40that's still considered a self pick and everyone pays you
- 6:43double. Now, one of the things that we
- 6:45were talking about, and this is where I'm curious, you all
- 6:48listening, do you pay at the moment?
- 6:51Because we're like, oh, do you just keep score?
- 6:53Do you actually exchange coins? I know you were.
- 6:57You were. Skeptical like what?
- 7:00I don't. Need $0.50.
- 7:01You know, like write it down on a piece of paper.
- 7:04I don't know. You were not a fan of the
- 7:06exchange to me think. You pay as you go.
- 7:09It's fun. Everyone pays out.
- 7:11Was that fun? I thought it was kind of dumb.
- 7:14People. I just like playing like, why do
- 7:16you need to score? Why do you need to carry around
- 7:19coins? I don't know.
- 7:20Because it adds another element. Well it does add an element so I
- 7:25kind of but. Strategy.
- 7:27It adds a different strategy. I tend to be like, if I know
- 7:31someone needs something and I know I'm not going to win, like
- 7:35I'll be like, Merry Christmas. Lisa.
- 7:37Here's the tile you need. That makes me Tina crazy.
- 7:40What did you say at the game today when Tina wanted you to be
- 7:43cutthroat? I said that blood is thicker
- 7:47than quarters. That's what I said and believe.
- 7:50It, however, Tina said. Let me tell.
- 7:52Let me tell you. Let me tell you, I didn't.
- 7:54Think about this. This is all about being nice,
- 7:56which is why we love her. She's just one of the sweetest
- 7:58people I know. But in mahjong, when you're
- 8:01playing for money, being nice to one player is really being
- 8:06unkind to the other two players because it's making it harder
- 8:10for them to win and then they're going to have to pay.
- 8:12They're going to have to pay another $0.25.
- 8:14Oh my gosh. No, Patricia Theresa, I know.
- 8:17What you're saying, I know what you're saying.
- 8:19It's not really nice. It's.
- 8:21Not necessarily good. To the.
- 8:22Gander, I get it. Yeah.
- 8:24I don't think the here's my thing and I kind of agree with
- 8:26you. The wagers are not life changing
- 8:29money to really. There are people that would get,
- 8:32I know. Durious, but for us.
- 8:34For us, maybe not, but I'm just doing.
- 8:36It for. Fun, or probably most people.
- 8:38Well, that's the thing. Like who?
- 8:40Let us know. Yeah, let.
- 8:41US know this. Stuff.
- 8:42Really. Seriously.
- 8:43Well, and I, I am curious, like I like the physical exchange of
- 8:46the coins. I think it's kind of funny, but
- 8:49I wonder if people actually play with dollars.
- 8:51Well, I could see if you amped up stakes if it was like $20
- 8:55instead of $0.20, but also $50 instead of $0.50.
- 8:58Now that would that would. Now Amy's perking up.
- 9:01Now you're. Talking now.
- 9:02You're talking but. Can I Can I interject also when
- 9:06people are playing for money and people I'm?
- 9:08This is a huge assumption, so listeners correct me if I'm
- 9:11wrong. Tell Tina she's full of it.
- 9:13Wow, she's been being so nice today.
- 9:16Now she's. A little sassy, anyway.
- 9:19The people that play for money are generally the people that
- 9:23have been playing a longer time are really serious and they play
- 9:26quickly and so there's a lot of rounds.
- 9:29So if you're playing ten hands, I mean a dollar, a dollar here,
- 9:34a dollar there, well, make it. You could do a whole lot of
- 9:37laundry in my book because there's a lot of quarters being
- 9:39exchanged. And I lived most of my life.
- 9:43I lived most of my life having to pay quarters for laundry.
- 9:46And let me tell you, it was hard giving away quarters because I
- 9:49hoarded them. Well, OK, so let's get back to.
- 9:51Let's get. Back.
- 9:52OK, so here's the thing. The first rule that we just
- 9:54talked about is pure luck. It has nothing to do with the
- 9:57strategy that we just talked to. Right.
- 9:58So what's your own town? OK, so you're.
- 10:00On town then. What if someone, and this is
- 10:03what Teresa's talking about, just being nice, if you supply
- 10:07the tile that someone needs for mahjong, you have to pay double
- 10:12and then everyone else just pays normal so.
- 10:15Really. Discard a tile?
- 10:16You pick it up and say mahjong. You have to pay double.
- 10:19Double. And if yeah, and then everyone
- 10:21else just pays the normal amount.
- 10:22Which again, in my book, that second criteria is kind of not
- 10:27luck, but there's not a lot of strategy to it well.
- 10:30But you're you. You'd be more careful about what
- 10:32you're discarding. You'd be more defensive with
- 10:35your discards because you don't want to give someone mahjong.
- 10:38Well, but I feel nobody wants to give anybody Mahjong Teresa.
- 10:41Certainly doesn't seem to care. I think it's.
- 10:43Nice. Anyway, Amy, go ahead.
- 10:45Well, no, I, I agree. I think my strategy today is I
- 10:48don't intentionally give or throw tiles that I think will
- 10:52give somebody else mahjong. But I thought there was an
- 10:55interesting. Maybe it's your next rule.
- 10:58It's about. Jokers, the Joker exchange.
- 11:00I thought that's impactful from a strategy.
- 11:02So let's talk about that. So here's where it gets
- 11:04interesting. Okay, if you win mahjong and
- 11:10your mahjong hand at the time of mahjong doesn't have any jokers
- 11:16in it. You mean exposed, right?
- 11:19Or it. No it doesn't.
- 11:20At all. Just at all you're when you,
- 11:23when you show the people your mahjong hand and there are no
- 11:26jokers at the time of mahjong, then the stakes get higher.
- 11:31If you pick your own tile, if it's a self pick like we talked
- 11:35about earlier and it's jokerless, everyone has to pay
- 11:39you 4 times the amount. So if it's a 20, so if it's a 25
- 11:42cent hand, everybody pays you a dollar, that's $4.00.
- 11:46That's not chump change. That is not chump change.
- 11:49So what Amy was, what Amy was talking about is it's sort of,
- 11:55it really does change the way like do you do a joker exchange?
- 11:59Do you help someone have a joker less hand?
- 12:01Do you? Well, to me it's because
- 12:04obviously you want the Joker. So yeah, you do have to be.
- 12:07Do you really need the Joker? Which generally you do, but
- 12:12there is a downside because you may should that person get Maj.
- 12:16you might be helping them with a joker less hand and they're
- 12:20breaking in the money. You wouldn't do a joker exchange
- 12:23unless you really needed to anyway.
- 12:24But again, with the joker less hand thing, if someone else
- 12:28discards and you have a joker less hand, the discarder pays
- 12:32four times the amount and everyone else has to pay twice
- 12:35the amount. So having a joker less hand you
- 12:38get more. What was the scenario that when
- 12:40we were just playing that there was like a double whammy that
- 12:43you did? A double.
- 12:45Wham, there was a double whammy like you exchange.
- 12:47You had a joker. Less it was just I was just able
- 12:50to, I just got 2 joker exchanges and one it didn't have anything
- 12:54to do with me having a joker less hand.
- 12:56Tina did have a lessons learned because what happened during our
- 13:01play was that she did a Joker exchange.
- 13:04And then I realized I didn't need the joker and I ended up
- 13:07having to discard the Joker. Yeah, and, you know, I think
- 13:11people sometimes get a high from discarding a joker.
- 13:15You know, we all feel more powerful.
- 13:17Or doing that. Or just knee jerk doing a joker
- 13:19exchange. Like you get that tile and you.
- 13:22Right, right. Which means she had a Joker
- 13:25list. She.
- 13:26Had a joker list and. You didn't even need that Joker.
- 13:28Exactly that was. Really stupid.
- 13:30It was really stupid. And I was annoyed that you threw
- 13:32out a joker that I really. Could have.
- 13:33That's the only time when we just played that it clicked in
- 13:37terms of strategy. Why?
- 13:39How it changed, how I would play the game like the other ones.
- 13:44To me, it is what it is. You can't really control that
- 13:47one that is in your hands. To do so anyway, those are the
- 13:50rules for scoring and playing with money.
- 13:53Concealed hands. Oh.
- 13:54Right, thanks. Concealed hands, those joker
- 13:57less hand rules do not apply. So if you're playing a concealed
- 14:01hand and you have a joker less hand you don't get, there's no
- 14:04bonus for that on a concealed hand.
- 14:06Why? Why would?
- 14:07There not be because most concealed hands you can't use a
- 14:10joker. In the first place.
- 14:12But well, again. Another weird rule.
- 14:14OK, so we really are interested. What do you all do?
- 14:18Littlehouseofmaj@gmail.com E-mail us.
- 14:21We want to know and we'll kind of share some of the results.
- 14:24Again, we tried it for the first time.
- 14:26It was interesting. You know, is it my favorite
- 14:28thing? Maybe not.
- 14:29But you know, I think it was fun to try.
- 14:31I enjoyed trying. I think it was a fun twist it.
- 14:34Was fun. It was an interesting twist, so
- 14:36if you haven't tried it, give it a try.
- 14:38So you want? To know I want to know is do
- 14:40people? Score like do.
- 14:42People ever actually score without the money part just to
- 14:45see who wins? I don't know.
- 14:46To me that's like gin rummy though.
- 14:48Didn't you used to do that in? Yeah.
- 14:49Yeah, like. You keep score.
- 14:50Yeah. Anyway, moving on.
- 14:53Before we end, Tina, you, you had a very interesting, not fun
- 14:57fact, but something that you learned about some play.
- 15:02Oh, oh, oh. Oh, I heard about something
- 15:04called slamming which I didn't know was a thing.
- 15:07Sounded so aggressive. It is aggressive.
- 15:09It is aggressive. So slamming is basically when
- 15:12two people want the same discard tile usually.
- 15:15I mean, the rule is it goes in order, but if you want to kind
- 15:18of be a jerk you just pick it up and put it on your rack really
- 15:22fast. Asked because whoever has it on
- 15:24their rack first gets it, so you.
- 15:26Can I thought, here's the thing, I don't understand why that
- 15:29Trump's the rule of whoever is next.
- 15:31That doesn't make sense to. Me no, but like.
- 15:33Right. It is.
- 15:34Though but wait a second, is it the fact?
- 15:36Is it they both verbally? Call No, it's someone says I
- 15:40call, they grab the tile and they they just blam it on their
- 15:44if you start. So the rule isn't it's actually
- 15:46in the rule because I looked it up because it seemed bananas to
- 15:49me. The rule is it goes in order or
- 15:52who never exposes first. So it's the possession is 9/10
- 15:55of the law rule, but with what you're saying.
- 15:57It just seems mean. It's not cool.
- 15:59It's not. Those two rules are in.
- 16:01Yeah, there is. Total opposition.
- 16:03I know I'll I'll look into it more, but that's kind of what is
- 16:06crazy. But, but wouldn't you want to
- 16:08call it fast so you don't give people the opportunity to think
- 16:12about it? Well, but here's what I have to.
- 16:13Do because then slamming's. Good.
- 16:15Are you pro con slamming people? I think it's it's not a cool
- 16:18thing. Like from what I understand it's
- 16:20really bad. I can think faster, you don't
- 16:22even try that. Yeah, I mean, if you're playing
- 16:24fast though, isn't that what naturally I?
- 16:26Guess. And maybe it's.
- 16:28Just in you. I guess maybe.
- 16:29You need a sister bond, a sister agreement in blood.
- 16:32No slamming. Just say no to slamming is this.
- 16:35You snooze, you lose. Wait a second, if I'm fast and I
- 16:39know I want that tile and I want to make it happen.
- 16:41Yeah, I mean, why? Do I have to wait for you to
- 16:43think about? It you know.
- 16:44I kind. Of Wow, Amy.
- 16:46I just don't understand if the rule is because here's the thing
- 16:49that I don't know. Is it because you it's the
- 16:50difference is physically taking the dice as opposed to two
- 16:53people at the same time saying I call it.
- 16:57That's when the order of operations comes into play.
- 17:00The difference in slamming is you are physically grabbing the
- 17:02tile and you say putting it on. Boom, slam it on So.
- 17:05What if both people are doing it and you're a wrestling match?
- 17:08Then it's a feat of strength. I don't know dogs and cats.
- 17:12Anyway. Together.
- 17:13Anyway, chaos. I just wanted to bring up
- 17:16slamming because I hadn't heard of it before and just seems
- 17:20aggressive. We talked it through, we all had
- 17:22different opinions. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:23Point. I'm too nice for that kind of
- 17:25OK. Well, I think we've made an
- 17:26agreement, everyone. No slamming for the sisters.
- 17:29Oh, wait, no. You're right.
- 17:33Do it, I agreed. We're so nice.
- 17:35I think Amy and I are on the snooze.
- 17:37You lose Cam, yes. You're the nice.
- 17:40This is a good time to stop people.
